A story about finding one’s place in the world and taking destiny in one’s cloven hooves.

It’s not easy to be a little reindeer on a huge mountain plateau, when all you want to do is to go to a palm beach and eat ice cream. Because reindeer can’t fly, exactly. Well, Rudolph can! And if he knows how, it must be possible to learn it, surely? The little reindeer seeks out the owl, who knows a thing or two about flying. The stage is set for a crash course.

Mieko is Dancing

Mariko Miyata-Jancey / Skinkeape (illustrator)

Lush, charming picture book story!

Mieko loves to dance! Especially when she can wear shorts and a T-shirt instead of those stupid tights and that uncomfortable leotard. Mieko has never spun so fast or jumped so high before! And now Sofia with the smile has started dancing too – that smile that makes Mieko melt inside, that makes it even nicer to be there.

But why has Mieko been put in the jump group? They’re all boys!

«A fresh take on expanding the category of girlhood […] In the drawings from dance practice, illustrator Skinkeape shows a wonderful variety of kids. Despite the simple lines, the figures’ expressions are nuanced, underlining the fact that all personalities are unique. »

Karin and the Darkness

Janne-Camilla Lyster / Annette Saugestad Helland (illustrator)

Picture book about the questions, big and small, that can come up at bedtime.

What’s that, shining in the sky? What’s a star? Where does everything go when it’s dark? The Horse keeps asking and asking. Karin has to tell him all about the lights and the orchestra in the sky and why night-time comes – because the Horse is just a horse who doesn’t know a lot of stuff, so you can’t just lie down and go to sleep.

«This is like Betty Botter’s better butter for the tongue, which appeals, of course, to the young.»

«Karin and the Darkness is a poetic and melodic exploration of children’s great imagination. The author puts the idea of darkness as something frightening for kids aside and instead encourages wonder without caring much about finding answers. This makes the book a lovely little good night story within a good night story.»

Crypto

A magical underwater world!

Crypto 1: Into the Deep

Ophelia moves to Salt Cove to live with her foster family, the Birkens, and gets to know local fisherman Bernard. Both have seen traces of sea monsters, and together they discover the sea monster Krako and a missing boy! They rescue the boy, but Krako gets captured by the boss of the town’s aquarium.

Crypto 2: The Hurricane

The aquarium is closed because of a hurricane warning, so Ophelia and Bernard free Krako from captivity in a dramatic and perilous rescue operation. When another monster rescues Ophelia from the sea, it becomes clear that she has a very special connection to the sea monsters. Are they really dangerous, or is it people that are making them feel unsafe?

Crypto 3: Open Ocean

Dalis steals Ophelia’s book on cryptozoology. Ophelia and Bernard pursue her out to sea and discover that Dalis is working for a secret organisation – Crypto. Dalis is badly injured in a dramatic encounter with a new sea monster, and along with Dalis, Bernard and Ophelia head for Fingal’s Island, where Crypto has its headquarters. They discover that the organisation isn’t hunting the sea monsters, but is working to protect them and keep them in hiding.

Crypto 4: Frost Mist

To Ophelia, the organisation on Fingal’s Island feels strangely familiar. She explores the island on her own, and when she encounters a dangerous swarm of sea monsters, she discovers that she can sing the crypto-siren songs, can understand strange cryptosymbols, and can tame sea monsters. It turns out that her biological father has a connection to Crypto. Is it right for the organisation to keep its knowledge of the sea monsters a secret?

Crypto 5: Deep Freeze

Ophelia and Bernard join Dalis on an expedition to the Arctic, in hot pursuit are the aquarium manager and some American businessmen who want to cash in on the sea monsters. Ophelia comes across traces of her father and realises that he was trying to expose Crypto. He believed that if only humans knew about the sea monsters, we would also be considerate of them. During the expedition, Ophelia is put in great danger, and the aquarium manager realises that he has to abandon his business plans.

Crypto is a series that will consist of ten books dealing with the protection of animals and the environment. How can we protect and save things that for most people are unfamiliar and scary?

“Tell us about what happened at the party yesterday,” the investigator says, and I breathe in, not knowing where to begin, thinking about my mum. Then I finally open my mouth to explain.

Yousef’s life is centred around rules – at home, at school, and among his group of friends. But he’s a constant letdown to his mum, the child protection service has already got a foot in the door, and among his mates, Yousef is well on his way to becoming an outsider.

But Yousef believes he can fix all this. Until a party in Stovner changes everything.

«In On One Condition, Alaei explores a relation with no obvious solution. This makes the novel even more interesting. What constitutes an unbearable day-to-day reality? What help is there to be had? […] Especially the dialogue is written in a language that young people growing up in places like Stovner will feel at home in.»

«Alaei is exceptionally skillful at telling an engaging story. In addition to this, she masterfully balances outward brazenness and inward vulnerability, by showing rather than telling.”

Neda Alaei (b. 1991) grew up in Moss and lives in Oslo. She graduated in Writing Studies from the Norwegian Institute of Children’s Books in 2017. She is a trained child welfare officer and her day job is as a milieu therapist working with young people.

Behind the counter, we find the swamp kids Lok, Knis and Nøste, who would way prefer to be out adventuring to serving and washing up after horrible yetis, sassy mermaids and stinky trolls. But when the bailiff turns up and demands taxes that the inn is unable to pay, the swamp kids must come up with a plan to save “The Buxum Nixie”.

They have to host the best party ever to earn the money they owe. But to do so, they’ll have to go to Port Mortem to get everything they need. Will they escape with their lives?

The Last Skull is the first book in the Wild Wilderness series – a funny and exciting comic about three swamp kids who have to save their inn from ruin.

If it Doesn’t Burn

Ronja Svenning Berge

A poetic graphic novel by Ronja Svenning Berge.

Linda lives with flat mates in a shared accommodation. She goes out drinking with her friends, works, lives a normal life. At the same time, she carries with her a brutal experience, which re-surfaces for her when she finds a box of stuff she thought she’d long gotten rid of.

This is not a story about drowning in one’s inner darkness. It is a story about finding out how to live with it. And most of all, it is a story of friendship.

«Wonderfully painful and beautiful at the same time [...] The simple visual language is wonderfully beautifully executed.»

But Who Are You?

A gripping graphic novel about Alzheimer’s.

A grown-up son’s travel to visit his father, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and put in a care facility, also turns into a journey through memories from his childhood, youth and, eventually, adulthood. In a shared, associative world of imagination, the son tries to understand and reconcile with his father as well as his past.

Martin Ernstsen’s last graphic novel was the awardwinning adaptation of Knut Hamsun’s Hunger. Now he’s back with a deeply personal story about his father and Alzheimer’s disease.

«But who are you? is another artistic victory for Ernstsen.»

Sydvesten

«In his new graphic novel, Martin Ernstsen has managed to draw on all the narrative possibilities dementia lends itself to. The result is deeply moving.»

Empirix

«But who are you? is a graphic novel for everyone who has experienced the loss of someone close to them to a slow death like dementia, or who wants to prepare for the fact that this is something that might happen down the line.»
