SATISFACTION GUARANTEED LOUISE BROWN has worked at MGCCC for 37 years.

Employment longevity is a rare thing in today’s business world, but Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College seems to engender long employment stints in its employees. From the president of the college to administrative assistants, MGCCC has an impressive number of employees with more than 30 years on the job. “The moment you begin a job here, you realize that it is a family,” said Louise Brown, coordinator of Grants and Special Projects. “We do so many things together on campus that we really get to know each other and support each other. That is a wonderful thing to have at work.” Charles Sullivan, professor emeritus and college archivist, said he has remained because of the autonomy he has been given by each administration. “I began teaching history here in 1967, and ever since that time, I have been allowed to teach my classes the way I wanted, have been given the time to write, and allowed to create the college archives. Having a job where you can pursue your passions is very fulfilling and worthwhile. Though I am sure I would have been reigned in if what I taught was not within certain CHARLES L. SULLIVAN parameters or did not began working at MGCCC in 1967. meet certain standards, I always enjoyed great autonomy in the classroom and beyond.” Sullivan recently played a key role in the college donating the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College C.C. “Tex” Hamill Down South Magazine Collection and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community

MGCCC employees are passionate about what the college offers

College Dixie Press Collection. Both collections have many photographs and contributed research including the labeling of each photo by Sullivan. “Dr. Graham agreed to contribute these collections, which will provide our state with important documentation of life in South Mississippi,” he said. “Researchers will now be able to go the state archives and do research about the lives of coastal residents in the early and mid-1900s. I have been able to work many, many hours on these collections, thanks to the college, and appreciate the generosity Dr. Graham had in gifting them to the state.” Employees are able to rate the college as an employer through an annual survey offered by ModernThink. The Great Colleges to Work For program, one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country, has recognized MGCCC 10 times in the past 10 years and the college has made the Honor Roll list four times. Key areas the institution was recognized for in 2021 were Compensation & Benefits; Mission & Pride; Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging; Professional Development; Job Satisfaction & Support; and Supervisor/Department Chair Effectiveness. “I would say there is definitely a lot of pride in the college among the employees who work here,” said Johanna Martin, administrative assistant in the Learning Resources Center at the Jackson County Campus. “I noticed that from the very first day I began working here 43 years ago. It is a welldeserved pride because the college truly focuses on doing things to support our students’ success and to help our community. I certainly think that goes a long way in making people want to continue working for any employer.” Brown, who has been at MGCCC for 37 years, said she plans to continue working as long as she enjoys what she is doing. “I love my job, knowing that I am helping the community and college, and I love working with the people here. My bosses make me feel like my contributions are valuable to the college and as long as that is true, I’ll be here.”

Blazing trails, making history MEET ALLANAH TURNER, GULFPORT’S FIRST BLACK FEMALE FIREFIGHTER BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Allanah Turner makes her living fighting fires, but the blaze that burns inside her won’t be extinguished anytime soon. “Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a vessel and influence as many lives as possible,” says the 20-year-old Gulfport native. “I knew I had to start somewhere; why not my community? On Sept. 28, Turner reached a life milestone while also making history as she graduated from the Gulfport Fire Department Academy — becoming the city’s first black female firefighter. State Rep. Sonya Williams-Barnes was on hand to congratulate Turner and applaud her accomplishment. “You are the first, but you won’t be the last,” Williams-Barnes said on social media. “You set the stage, broke the ceilings and created a new road for other little black girls in Gulfport to follow.”

Turner’s early success in athletics, namely track and basketball, paved the way for her firefighting career. In 2018, she and her track team at West Harrison High School won the state

championship, and in 2019, she was named the female athlete of the year by the Gulfport Sports Hall of Fame. After high school, Turner received an offer to compete in track and field Allanah Turner (center) with her parents, for Mississippi Darron and Adrian Turner State University. A NOTE TO FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS It’s Easier Than You Think! Buying a home can feel intimidating — there’s a lot to know, and do, and qualify for, and budget for. With the right Realtor though, it really is easier than you think. As a recent first-time homebuyer myself, I compiled a list of things I think everyone considering buying should know: • Different loans have different standards – Most people think you need great credit and several thousand dollars in the bank to buy a house. Wrong! Some loans require $0 down if the home is in a certain area. Others can accommodate lower credit scores if the home and borrower meet stricter standards. Your Realtor can suggest the right lender to help you become a homeowner no matter what your financial situation. • Even with a $0 down loan, there are still fees — Most contracts require an earnest money deposit, and buyers usually need to pay for the inspection and appraisal. But for roughly the same cost as a security deposit on a rental, you can become a homeowner! • Pick a great Realtor, and only use them — New buyers sometimes think they’ll get a better deal by going directly to the listing agent. Wrong! A buyer’s agent will negotiate with the listing agent to get you the best deal possible. New buyers also sometimes think when they find a home online and click “speak to an agent” or “make an appointment” that they’re being connected to the listing agent. Also wrong! This sends you to someone in a pool of local buyer’s agents. Select your Realtor, and that person can help you with any and every property you find. • Insurance rates make a big impact on your monthly payment — It’s extremely wise to shop around because rates can vary drastically and can impact your monthly payment by several hundred dollars. Consult your Realtor if you have questions about different policies and providers. • You can’t finance it for more than it appraises for — Many new buyers in today’s crazy market think they can win the bidding war by offering $20k over asking price since it would mean a fairly small difference in monthly payment. This is unfortunately wrong as well. Listing agents put a bit of research into pricing a home, and often they’re very close to what the home will appraise for. That means if you want to offer over asking price, you should have the cash to back it up. Ask your Realtor for more tips on how to place the winning offer and get into your dream home! If you have any other questions, would like more tips on buying, or need help with anything real estate related please call or text me anytime!

Leader ON THE RISE SCARLET PEARL VP NAMED AMONG GAMING INDUSTRY’S MOST PROMISING PROFESSIONALS BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Gretchen Holzhauser says she didn’t choose the gaming industry; it chose her. “My parents trained thoroughbred racehorses, so I spent a lot of time on the racetrack — reading racing forms and picking winners with my dad,” recalls the Louisiana native. “It just came naturally that I would end up working in the gaming industry.” In 2006, when Harrah’s New Orleans reopened after Hurricane Katrina, Holzhauser started there as a beverage server. Her career gained momentum over the next several years, and she joined the Scarlet Pearl team in 2017 as operational excellence leader. In March, she was promoted to vice president of human resources. In a testament to her performance, Emerging Leaders of Gaming and Global Gaming Business Magazine recently named her among its 2021-2022 ELG 40 Under 40. This honor recognizes young professionals making significant contributions in the casino gaming industry and who are poised to be the industry’s next generation of leaders. Holzhauser was selected from among more than 125 candidates and is the only honoree representing the Southeast United States. “I was very surprised and honored to be recognized among the ELG 40 under 40; it truly means the world to me,” she says. “I think I’ve had a diverse background with positions in the front and back of house (at the) property and corporate levels and in several major gaming markets, which led me to be a great candidate to represent the gaming industry and the Scarlet Pearl.” As human resources vice president, Holzhauser has overseen the building of the human resources information system infrastructure from the ground-up, led COVIDprevention and -response efforts for the property’s 800-plus employees and kept the Scarlet Pearl staffed amid a nationwide labor shortage. “She manages her team and guides the property with compassion, common sense and understanding,” says Scarlet Pearl CEO LuAnn Pappas. “She is one of the few vice presidents of human resources who will be on the floor on a Saturday night, engaging with both employees and guests.”

20

November 2021

Holzhauser credits her family, particularly her dad, with inspiring and pushing her to become the woman she is today. I approach each challenge head on,” she says. “Recently, the hospitality and entertainment industry has struggled to find and retain top talent. We have decided to only hire the best, and to do that, we made the commitment to pay the best.” At home, Holzhauser has been married to her husband, Robert, for 10 years and is mother to 2-year-old Adelaine. Despite her career success, she considers her daughter to be her greatest accomplishment and primary responsibility. “My main goal is to be a role model for my daughter and to show her that anything is possible with hard work and a strong drive,” Holzhauser says. “I continue to learn and grow under my current leadership, so I want to continue to leave my mark here at the Scarlet Pearl.”

Resilient and determined Debbie Batia of D. Batia Interiors brings passion, expertise to every project BY JENNIFER GENTILE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDI STAGE PORTRAITURE

nterior designer Debbie Batia doesn’t have a particular aesthetic she’s known for. Despite her expertise, the owner of Biloxi-based D. Batia Interiors isn’t one to impose her will or ideas on clients. Instead, from the start of the relationship, she focuses on putting them at ease and listening to their goals and preferences. “I really have no trademarks other than quality furnishings and interiors with great bones and beautiful products,” she says. “Every project I take on is styled to be unique to that client and what they are hoping to achieve.”

BUILDING A REPUTATION

Batia learned this customer-focused approach from her parents, who were both interior designers and assumed ownership of Merchiston Hall Galleries in Biloxi in 1957. “I always was in the store growing up and after school every day until daddy or mother took us home,” she recalls. “When you are exposed to all the great interior designers that worked in the store back then (we had 8-9 professional designers at that time), and you have all of these

wonderful experiences going along with your father on design appointments with clients or corporate job appointments, you really learn a lot — as well as develop a love for what he did.” Batia began working in the store in 1977 after her father died suddenly at age 46, and she has been in the business ever since. When Hurricane Katrina destroyed the original store, her mother retired, and Batia brought the business to Pass Road, where it remained for more than 11 years. In May of 2017, she relocated to Howard Avenue in the heart of downtown Biloxi — a block from where the original store building had been. Today, D. Batia has clients from all walks of life throughout the country. “We have decorated dorm rooms,

apartments, and 25-square-foot homes and corporate offices,” she says. “We can do it all.” Batia’s reputation was a main reason Dawn and Mike Goodwin hired her to redecorate and renovate their home on Schmidt Drive in Ocean Springs. The scope of the work grew over time, Dawn Goodwin says, because the couple added a bathroom and overhauled the home’s exterior. “Debbie was right there with us

and many other updates that we use every single day in this business,” she says. D. Batia’s team includes a design assistant, a custom window designer and fabricator and an accounting office manager/marketing director, as well as a delivery department and window treatment installation specialist. While the pandemic affected walk-in traffic at her store, Batia says the business has been busier than ever over the last two

lighting, wallcovering and everything else associated with home or office,” she says. We carry a very wide range of outdoor furnishings and accessories as well.” As an established business that has operated for decades, D. Batia Interiors carries lines that usually are only found in larger metropolitan areas and not available anywhere else locally, Batia says. The world of interiors and home furnishings is everchanging, so the business’s stock is refreshed constantly to keep up. “We have major home furnishings markets several times a year that we try to attend, and we are constantly receiving new fabrics samples from our companies, as well as new catalogues and updates to our window treatments library, new wood finishes

years as people have taken advantage of low-interest mortgage loans and readily available Small Business Administration loans that enabled them to renovate or buy properties. Despite the many changes and challenges caused by COVID, she adds, one thing that stayed constant was people dreaming of what their home or office could look like — and needing help to make those visions a reality. “We are a small, family-owned business that has made it through all the roughest periods of time here on the Gulf Coast,” Batia says. “We are resilient, determined and happy to still be in business in downtown Biloxi.”

To walk into D. Batia Interiors is to be surrounded by infinite possibilities. Flooring, fabric and wallcovering samples abound throughout the store to help interior design clients develop their vision. Customers also can stop in to shop for furnishings, décor, accessories and gifts. “We carry every major line of furnishings, rugs, accessories,

Debbie always provides answers, information and updates in a timely manner.” Batia employed her design flair inside and outside the couple’s home, according to Goodwin, and advised which pieces of furniture were worth reupholstering and which they might consider replacing. They curved sofa she suggested for their living room turned out to be perfect for the space, and an antique mirror she chose inspired them to make over their wet bar. “Debbie has an innate ability for determining our tastes, likes and dislikes,” Goodwin says. “It was exciting to see what options she would come up with.”

'Look cute, feel cute'

Sara Kate Boutique

promotes confidence through fashion BY JENNIFER GENTILE

E

specially after the turmoil of the past year and a half, Sara Reymond says women need to feel cute and stylish. “Whether you are a mom who has been sitting behind a computer for the last year at home instead of her workplace, or a high school student who has not been able to be with her friends as much or in school with a normal schedule, it is more important than ever that I help them regain confidence,” says the owner of Sara Kate Boutique, “and a big part of that is through fashion.” The wife and mom of two received her fashion merchandising degree from The University of Mississippi and has lived on the Coast since she graduated in 1994. She launched Sara Kate Boutique nine years ago, and with the store’s motto of “Look cute, feel cute,” Reymond tries to have something for everyone at her Pass Christian store. “My mission is to have a fun, light and airy place to shop and visit …,” she says. “I always have loved that three generations can come in and find something to take home.” Having fun with fashion is key, she says, and to look great, she advises finding styles and colors that work for you. “When you put on an outfit, just make sure it makes you smile,” Reymond says. “If it makes you smile and feel good, I say get it.” Judging by the online reviews, numerous customers have had smile-worthy experiences at Sara Kate. Shoppers rave about the quality of the clothing, the friendliness of staff and the positive atmosphere. “Sara (the owner) is so genuine in the way she wants to help you find the perfect item for whatever occasion you’re shopping for,” writes Annie Harvell. “They offer a great selection of apparel, jewelry, shoes and even a few can’t-miss gifts.” Abby Mills writes that Sara Kate is her go-to for business, casual and special occasion statement pieces. “This precious little store is where you get THAT top, earrings

28

and wedges that you throw on with jeans …,” she says. “Every time I wear a Sara Kate piece, I get grumbles from the admirers because they can rarely be replicated, making my fashion trendy and unique.” Even with a renovation completed at the beginning of the year, Reymond says the boutique’s biggest future goal is to somehow expand into a bigger space, as the store could benefit from a bigger showroom floor and more dressing rooms. More immediately, she’s looking forward to the holidays. “Everyone is craving a ‘normal’ holiday season, and with that comes family gatherings and Christmas parties,” she says. “The store will be stocked full of trending styles, outfits and accessories for every occasion, as well as perfect gift ideas.” Any time of year, Reymond says she wholeheartedly enjoys what she does. “I love picking out the merchandise, and I love displaying everything when it comes in,” she says. “And, of course, we love our clients, many of whom we now consider like family.”

LEGACY BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Johnson Bros. Jewelry: A place to buy 'pretty things' since 1 946 BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Earline Johnson was adored for her kindness and sweet nature, but it was her determination that ensured her business would thrive for generations. Winterizing your home can yield insurance savings

BY ANGELYN TREUTEL ZERINGUE

We are accustomed to very hot weather in the South, but during the winter, we sometimes encounter freeze days that can damage our homes. For your insurance, the fewer and less costly claims you have, the better your rate.

BEFORE ANY WINTER SURPRISES COME, TAKE CARE OF THE FOLLOWING TO PROTECT YOUR HOME:

• Service your air conditioning/heating unit by removing debris from the exterior components and wash away any dirt. Don’t store items near your exterior unit. Change your interior air filters. • Protect your pipes by covering them with an inexpensive pipe sleeve. • Request an energy audit from your utility company to locate air leaks so you can correct the issues and perhaps add insulation. Upgrading your windows will result in savings on home insurance if you install impact glass. This also will help you save money on your electric bill. • Test your smoke detectors and change the batteries every six months. Since the active storm season is winding down, now may be a good time to review your insurance coverages. Weather-related catastrophes have been steadily increasing, and the expenses to repair a home also have increased; both issues have caused rate increases.

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER TO KEEP YOUR RATES AS LOW AS POSSIBLE:

42

November 2021

• Check around with other insurance companies, and be sure to verify the financial rating of the new company you are considering • Ensure your coverage levels are appropriate. Replacement cost at the correct value is your best protection • Keep your home well maintained and update any outdated electrical, plumbing, roofing and or heating/air conditioning components or systems. Home updates help lower the policy rate. • Be certain your mortgage clause is up to date to avoid problems at policy renewal time.

INFORM YOUR INSURANCE AGENT OF ANY MAJOR STATUS CHANGES DURING THE YEAR, SUCH AS:

• If your marital status or members of your household have changed; your policies may need to be updated. • You began renting out your home, as you may need to change the type of policy used to cover your property. A long-term renter will need his or her own renter’s or tenant-occupancy insurance. Failure to advise your insurer of residency changes can result in voidance of insurance contracts. Short-term rentals may require a commercial insurance policy for your protection. • You have purchased new cars, boats or toys; be sure you have all your assets protected. • You work from home; discuss your home-based business with your agent to ensure your business liability and assets are protected.

Spending tips for

happier holidays FROM NAVIGATOR CREDIT UNION

The holiday season is one of giving, which often means it is also the season of spending. Money worries can affect even the cheeriest holiday shoppers. To truly enjoy the season, set a spending plan and stick with it. Here are six ways to get your gift giving off to a jolly start: DECIDE ON A SPENDING LIMIT

Look over your finances and determine how much you can spend on gifts and other holiday-related expenses. When you are considering this amount, be sure you only use money you have set aside for Christmas or extra money you can find in your budget. Overspending now can lead to post-Christmas money blues.

ASSIGN MONEY TO EACH CATEGORY

Divide your budget according to the different spending categories you’ll have this holiday season. This means assigning a specific amount for each gift, as well as each outing, office Christmas party or other event. Knowing how much you have to spend on each gift and each sparkly dress or ugly sweater will help you narrow down ideas before you shop.

MAKE A SHOPPING LIST

HOLIDAY SAVINGS ACCOUNT

USE CASH AND CREDIT WISELY

BUDGET FOR HOLIDAY FUN

This tip is straight from Santa himself; make a list and check it twice. Before you go shopping, make a holiday shopping list and stick to it. A list helps you avoid impulse buys or overbuying. You should have one or two ideas within your price range for each individual. Resist the urge to splurge. It’s fun now, but you may regret it later. If you take time to plan ahead for major sales, you may even be able to buy something on your list for less money, almost like a gift you give yourself.

Using cash for as many purchases as possible can also help you keep holiday spending in check. Spending can seem more “real” when you are handing the cashier actual money or using your debit card to withdraw the spending directly from your account. When you’re using a credit card to make purchases, be sure you use a card that provides you benefits as well. Look for credit cards that offer cash back and holiday special points so you’ll get rewarded while you’re spending. And if you have more than one credit card, use the one with the lowest annual interest rate to avoid paying for this Christmas for years to come.

Plan for end-of-the-year spending sprees with the right savings account. For example, some financial institutions offer special accounts to help separate your holiday budget from your routine expenses. You will earn interest on the money you put away and can make withdrawals when it’s time to share the holiday spirit with loved ones. Knowing you’re buying gifts with your “Christmas money” makes holiday shopping extra celebratory.

When you are planning your holiday spending, consider setting aside some fun money, too. This is a special time of year, and enjoying yourself with family and friends is what the season of giving is all about. Having a holiday spending plan can mean not only a merry Christmas, but also a happy new year. Navigator Credit Union has over a dozen branches throughout Mississippi and Alabama. GULF PARK PANTRY OFFERS FOOD, OTHER ESSENTIALS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI Members of the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park community who need food and other essentials, such as toiletries and hygiene products, have a resource right on campus. USM Gulf Park Office of Student Affairs operates the Gulf Park Pantry, located in Hardy Hall. Faculty and staff members are eligible for items available at the pantry. USM Gulf Park Student Affairs Coordinator Jessica Langston says the pantry carries a variety of shelf-stable items, including breakfast bars, cereal, pasta and sauce, canned soups and vegetables, rice, and dried and canned beans, among other items. Personal hygiene and paper products also are available, as well as a limited amount of housewares and baby formula. An online form allows individuals to make a request, schedule pickup and provide information about family size, special requests and allergy concerns. For more information about pickups, individuals are encouraged to email Elizabeth Hand, a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Affairs, at e.moore@usm.edu Langston says the idea for a food pantry on campus has been discussed in recent years, and the need for help increased with the

COVID-19 pandemic. The pantry officially launched in late January and had immediate success with both donations and participation. “To date, we have completed more than 90 pickups and look forward to pushing our services out to students throughout the fall semester to expand our reach,” Langston says. Monetary and physical donations may be sent through campus mail to Langston or to: The University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Park Campus Jessica Langston, Hardy Hall 238 730 East Beach Boulevard Long Beach MS, 39560 The pantry also accepts donations of food and supplies in Hardy Hall 242, and through its Amazon and Walmart Wish Lists. Time x energy x focus = effectiveness Time is the great equalizer. Every person alive has the same 24 hours in each day. Time cannot be created or destroyed. Giving our time to someone or something means that we are “present” with that person or thing; time equals presence. However, this alone doesn’t BY RYAN GILES guarantee success. Energy, unlike time, is not equal among everyone. We can increase or diminish our level of energy. Energy equals action. When we pair energy with time, we get things done (time x energy = efficiency). However, this alone doesn’t guarantee success. Focus describes our ability to concentrate on a specific goal or purpose. Focus is concentrated attention. Many timemanagement tools miss the mark because they neglect focus. Without focus, you may be moving quickly but going in the wrong direction. Time x energy x focus = effectiveness.

START WITH WHY

While it may be tempting to dive into a discussion on time management, let’s begin with the end in mind and start with focus.

THREE STEPS TO IMPROVE FOCUS:

1. What is your long-term goal/purpose? If you don’t have one already, create your long-term “plan.” 2. Set quarterly goals. As you think about your long-term plan, ask yourself what can be done now to advance toward your long-term goals. These actions make great quarterly goals, which then can be broken down into weekly and daily tasks. Charles Schwab, once the richest man in the United States, stated that starting each day with three priorities, and working on them to completion, was the secret to his success. 3. Remove distractions. Once you know what must be done, remove distractions that would interfere. With the average American spending 4.7 hours per day in front of a screen for entertainment purposes, it’s easy to see why so few are effective. The good news is that you can distinguish yourself as a productivity master if you can remove distractions. My secret weapons for this are prayer, meditation and social media fasts.

THREE STEPS TO IMPROVE ENERGY:

While improving your focus involves disciplining your mind, increasing your energy requires some physical discipline. 4. Sleep for seven hours or more: This is a foundational habit, or a practice that makes other habits easier to follow.

46

November 2021

If you go to bed at a reasonable time and sleep for at least seven hours, you’ll wake up earlier. In his book, “Miracle Morning,” Hal Elrod found this habit to be the most common among the world’s top performers. 5. Diet: A mentor once said, “You can put 87 octane in a race car, but you won’t win many races.” The same is true for humans. You may be able to survive for a while with a poor diet, but you won’t perform at your highest level. 6. Exercise. A study among high-school students found that they scored 15 percent better on tests simply by standing up. Standing increases blood flow to the body and brain. Imagine the increased energy and creativity you can create if you exercise.

PRO TIP: When trying to adjust your daily routine, you’ll typically experience three phases: A. Excitement B. Discipline C. Habit The first stage, excitement, is fun because you’re starting something new. The final state of “habit” is easy because your brain puts the activity on autopilot. The dip in the middle is the most difficult part. Push through the “discipline” phase to be rewarded with a long-term habit. Many experts agree that the process of creating a habit takes about 30 days.

THREE STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR TIME

7. Delegate: While it’s true that time cannot be created, delegation done well is the next best thing. Delegating is one of the most powerful, yet most misunderstood, tools available to a manager. 8. Meetings: Let’s face it, most leaders wouldn’t consider meetings to be an effective time management tool. However, this is because many leaders are still having ineffective meetings. Run your meetings well, and you will have more time. 9. Just say “no”: This may be the most powerful timemanagement tool ever. Scrutinize your tasks and commitments. How many are helping you achieve your long-term goals? Learn to say “NO!”

Tax-free retirement account — What it is, and what it isn’t

BY KATHY ROGERS

Since I covered the basics of tax-free retirement accounts in this space, I have received several requests for additional information about TFRAs. I will answer a few of those questions here. The first thing to know about TFRAs is that they use indexed universal life insurance (IUL) as the funding chassis. With the update of the IRS 7702 rule this year, you can put more money into a policy while buying less life insurance, thus reducing your expenses. This concept has not always been called a TFRA, but it has been used by U.S. presidents, large banks and the wealthy to build and protect their wealth and mitigate taxes for over 50 years. A TFRA is a long-term investment plan. At a minimum, you must be able to fund the plan for three to seven years and allow it to grow for seven to 10 years before you plan to access the income stream. Just like any other income growth strategy, you must allow time for your money to grow; what you can expect to receive from the plan is dictated by what you put into it. These plans can be started for children as young as 14 days old. A TFRA is not a qualified plan; money from your current qualified plan cannot be rolled into it without first paying any taxes or penalties on money liquidated. Rules concerning 401k, Roth, 403b and other qualified plans are established by Congress and can be changed at their discretion. For example, the Secure Act changed the age at which required minimum distributions (RMDs) must be taken from your account from 70.5 to 72 — good right? However, that same law eliminated the stretch IRA. This means that should you pass away, your non-spousal beneficiaries no longer can stretch the payments over your lifetime. Your qualified retirement accounts must now be liquidated, and all taxes paid within 10 years — not good. A TFRA is governed by contract, not by the whims of Congress. This means that the rules can’t be changed after the fact. A TFRA plan is funded by after tax dollars, meaning you already have paid taxes on the money you put into your account. If your account is set up properly, your money grows tax free inside it. There is no requirement to report your earnings to the IRS. A TFRA is not governed by the IRS rules for retirement

A TFRA is a long-term investment plan. At a minimum, you must be able to fund the plan for three to seven years and allow it to grow for seven to 10 years before you plan to access the income stream. plans, such as the age you can access your money or the amount you can access, and there is no 10 percent IRS penalty should you need access to your money before age 59.5. After the first year, your money inside the TFRA is available for you to access should you need it. Unlike a 401k or Roth plan, a TFRA has a zero floor. Using an IUL, your money is indexed to the market and not actually in the market. If your indexing strategy goes up, you are credited with the gain per the strategy selected. If the market goes down, your zero floor prevents market loss. Your money is locked in, so instead of trying to recoup losses, you are in a position to grow your money. When funded properly, you can generally expect a 20-40 percent greater income stream than from a qualified plan. We don’t know the ups and downs life has in store for us. I’ve previously listed five reasons you should consider a TFRA; taxes, volatility, liquidity, living benefits and permanent death benefit. TFRAs also offer leverage and flexibility in the ups and downs of life; qualified plans can’t. A TFRA is a smart way to save for your future, but it isn’t for everyone. Contact a financial professional if you’d like to know more. Kathy Rogers is the vice president of Marston Rogers Group, a life planner and financial consultant. plan your holiday spending

Can you believe summer has ended and now we have to think about the holidays? Time has really escaped us, but if you start planning your holiday spending now, your money won’t quickly escape you. Normally during the holidays, consumers excessively spend and carry loads of debt into the new year. Times have changed, and if you want your money to start looking better and working better for you, then you must implement new money habits. We all know the Christmas song that says Santa’s “making a list and checking it twice.” Have you started making a list and checking it twice to see who is on your gift list this holiday season? I highly recommend a twocolumn list — one for family, and the other for anyone else. Keep in mind that you may not want to spend as much as in previous years, especially if the pandemic has affected your finances. Don’t worry if you can’t give like before because to your loved ones, you are the most treasured and important gift. Start by reviewing your existing budget. Do you have any discretionary income?

That’s money left over after paying all your bills. For those who may not have discretionary income, this is the perfect time to get a fun side hustle and use that money for gifts. You don’t want to disrupt the money you use for living expenses; this is key. Gifts are just a portion of your holiday spending. Now think about various gatherings and parties, as well as travel and the costs you didn’t anticipate. Here are a few creative tips:

FOR TRAVEL:

1. Use your points from hotels, airlines, and credit cards to help with this purchase. 2. Stay with family to cut down on hotel expenses. 3. Shop now for flights, or travel by train.

OTHER SOCIAL GATHERINGS:

1. Choose not to participate this year. It’s OK. Remember, you are the gift. 2. In lieu of a gift, see if you can prepare a dish to contribute to the holiday meal (less expensive).

3. Gift a service that others need and you can provide. You can call it your Christmas Community Mission. Now that you’ve got an idea of who you’re shopping for and how you’re going to shop, start working your holiday magic. Have your holiday funds automated to another account so you don’t accidentally spend them. Start watching out for discounts, coupons, sales and anything else that will help you stay within your budget. As you approach the holidays, remember that the goal is to not create holiday debt by opening new credit card accounts, maxing out existing credit cards or applying for loans just to shop. Focus on what’s important, your loved ones, and remember that the most important gift you can give is you. 'Big city results with a hometown feel' The Beauty Bar goes above and beyond to make clients feel special BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Monica Ladd and her niece, Andria Rodolfich, have long shared a dream of opening their own salon. “The beauty industry has always been in our blood; I had one of the first nail salons in the state of Oregon at a very early age,” says Ladd. In addition to her background in the gaming industry, she’s been involved in every facet of the beauty business — from teaching to product manufacturing. Rodolfich also had a passion for the industry, and after graduating from cosmetology school, she worked at several successful salons throughout the country as she and her husband moved with the military. Ladd returned to South Mississippi a few years ago, and Rodolfich followed this year. The pair realized their dream with the Jan. 4 opening of The Beauty Bar Boutique & Medispa in Biloxi — of which Ladd is the president and CEO while Rodolfich is CFO and operations manager. The business was such a resounding success, Ladd says, that they opened a second location six months later in Ocean Springs. “We want the Ocean Springs location to focus on stateof-the-art medical cosmetics, such as laser treatments and microneedling,” she says. “Ocean Springs allows us to also focus on signature facials and our very popular brow and lash services. We host many parties and social events there as well.” According to its mission statement, the Beauty Bar aims to provide “big city results with a hometown feel.” Typical customers, says Ladd, are people who are extremely busy but care about themselves. “They are hardworking mothers and fathers,” she adds, “along with busy career people that want to look and feel good.” The salon takes care of its clientele from head to toe, including facials, dermaplaning, waxing, manicures, pedicures and numerous brow- and lash-enhancement procedures. The laser and microneedling services the Beauty Bar offers are medical-grade treatments, according to Ladd, and fillers and injectables also are available. “We are educated in the newest technical processes for each service offered,” she says. Brow services, says Ladd, are an example of how the Beauty Bar goes above and beyond the typical salon experience. Whether a client comes in for a simple shaping or a more complex procedure like microblading, mapping is done in advance to ensure her brows are the perfect shape for her face. “The biggest reward is the look on our customers’ faces when their service is complete,” Ladd says. “They glow with beauty and joy both on the inside and outside.” The next venture for the business, Ladd continues, is expanding into esthetics education, from the basics to advanced training and certifications. Whatever the coming years have in store, The Beauty Bar always will strive to ensure a remarkable experience with each and every visit. “The Mississippi Coast has the most loving people,” Ladd says, “and we want to treat them in a way that they will know how special they are!”

Four high-end products I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT

W

hen I shop for makeup, whether for myself or for my clients, I gravitate toward a few products that will forever be my holy grails. I’m always trying new things, but I always return to my triedBY LAUREN RILEY and-true staples. • My first favorite product is Urban Decay All-Nighter Long-Lasting Setting Spray (ulta.com, $33.00). I often have compared this setting spray to others like the Too Faced Hangover 3-in-1 Setting and Priming Spray, the NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray and the Morphe setting spray, but none of them has the staying power of Urban Decay. Another benefit of this setting spray is that it does not have a super strong smell like others do. • Second, I have gone through contour palettes like no one’s business, but I always will return to the best. Kat Von D, now known as KVD Beauty, Shade + Light Refillable Face Contour Palette (ulta.com, $50) is the main palette I use at home and keep in my kit. It has the perfect three shades for contour and highlight. It also gives you the option to deepen your contour with the cooler shades and bronze it up with the warm shade. • Next, Urban Decay Original Eyeshadow Primer Potion (ulta.com, $13) is a product I cannot live without. A little bit goes a very long way. After applying the primer, try setting it with your setting powder to ensure maximum color pigment and long-lasting eye makeup for whatever your day holds. This eye primer will not let you down, I promise! • Finally, we have my all-time FAVORITE, Benefit BADgal BANG! Volumizing Mascara (ulta.com, $26). I’ve been using this mascara since it became available. When it says volumizing, it means nothing less. Benefit really outdid itself with this formula, and the wand is amazing! I rate this product 10/10 and would recommend to anyone and everyone.

g n i l her secret l i p S KENZIE LINN lives on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with her husband, their new baby boy and two dogs. She established her blog, Trendy Kenzie, in her junior year of college at Mississippi State University and strives to inspire her audience with her take on everyday fashion, mom lifestyle, and adventurous travel (trendykenzie.com). Here are the products that have earned a place on her favorites list: MOROCCAN OIL DRY SHAMPOO:

As a mom, I'm always looking for a high-quality dry shampoo for those days when I need to rush out of the house and refresh without washing. Of all the dry shampoos I've tried, this one has stuck and comes in light and dark tones for different hair colors.

TARTELETTE TOASTED EYESHADOW PALETTE:

This eyeshadow palette is a go-to of mine. My makeup artist used this when applying makeup for our wedding, and I fell in love with the warm shades. Bonus: It also smells like chocolate.

TARTE SHAPE TAPE CONCEALER:

Concealing the bags under my eyes is super important to me when I'm applying my makeup. I've owned this concealer for almost four years, and it does just the trick.

TULA MOISTURIZER AND EYEBRIGHTENING BALM:

If I had to choose two of my favorite Tula products, these would be them! I bring the eye balm in my purse everywhere in case I need a refresh, and it's so easy to apply. I also use the day and night moisturizer on a daily basis, which leaves my skin feeling moisturized and soft.

ISLE OF PARADISE TANNING DROPS:

Over the years, I've gone through countless self-tanners, and one thing I love about these drops is that you can put them in your own moisturizer to achieve your desired tan.

THE PHOTO SHOOT ADVICE FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY

1. For the best first dance photos: Laugh and talk about happy moments so you’re relaxed and smiling. Don’t discuss issues that could cause you to make frowns or upset faces. Laugh, smile, kiss, twirl and dip! No serious talk! 2. Have fun at the cake cutting without getting super messy! 3. Look up when walking down the aisle, and smile! 4. A last dance is a great idea! While your guests are lining up for your big exit, have one final dance with your partner. It is so intimate and romantic. Get with your DJ and add it to your timeline! KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT STOMACH CANCER BY DR. SIDRA KHALID

November is stomach cancer awareness month. The rate of stomach cancer has been declining gradually over the last few decades because of a reduction of risk factors. There are many risk factors involved with stomach cancer.  The main risk factor is Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).  It is a chronic, bacterial infection of the stomach that causes inflammation, also known as gastritis. It is treatable with antibiotics. Once treated, the risk of stomach cancer decreases significantly.   Also, changes in diet are recommended. Salt, salt-preserved foods, and foods containing nitrites are associated with stomach cancer.  Alcohol and smoking also are related to stomach cancer. Additionally, pernicious anemia is an autoimmune condition that causes gastritis and low vitamin B12 levels. Pernicious anemia also can lead to the development of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is linked with many genetic syndromes. If there is a strong family history, genetic testing is strongly recommended.   If you have symptoms, do not delay seeing your doctor. The symptoms that commonly present with stomach cancer are weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, painful swallowing, blackcolored stools called melena and early fullness after meals. Continue to make lifestyle adjustments, appropriately manage H. pylori and know your family history to decrease the risk of stomach cancer.

KEY STOMACH CANCER STATISTICS Stomach cancer accounts for about 1.5 percent of all new cancers diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Estimates for 2021 anticipate 26,560 new cases of stomach cancer (16,160 in men and 10,400 in women), with about 11,180 deaths. The lifetime risk of developing stomach cancer is higher in men (about 1 in 96) than in women (about 1 in 152), but each person's risk can be affected by many factors, including diet and genetic predisposition. Stomach cancer mostly affects older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. About six of every 10 people diagnosed with stomach cancer each year are 65 or older. Signs and symptoms of stomach cancer may include: • Difficulty swallowing • Feeling bloated after eating • Feeling full after eating small amounts of food • Heartburn • Indigestion • Nausea • Stomach pain • Unintentional weight loss • Vomiting Factors that increase the risk of stomach cancer include: • Gastroesophageal reflux disease • Obesity • A diet high in salty and smoked foods • A diet low in fruits and vegetables • Family history of stomach cancer • Infection with Helicobacter pylori • Long-term stomach inflammation (gastritis) • Smoking • Stomach polyps *INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE MAYO CLINIC AND THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

Stay healthy, active and happy this

holiday season The words “holiday” and “healthy” rarely are uttered in the same sentence. ‘Tis the season for sugary baked goods, decadent dinners, couch-potato marathons and last-minute, stress-filled sprints to the mall. Add on the challenges of COVID and the tail end of hurricane season, and this time of year can become the ultimate test of wills. That’s why it’s important to greet this period of overindulgence with practical tips and strategies for each situation you may encounter. Here are some tips to help get you through the season without derailing your health and wellness goals: MAKE HEALTHY EATING AND DRINKING ACHIEVABLE THROUGH PLANNING:

1. Prep and freeze healthy meals ahead of time: Meal prep is my best tool to prevent habits like stresseating or eating out of boredom. 2. Keep an eye on your portions (literally): Use simple visual guidelines to make it easier to eat healthy portions. For example, a bowl of your aunt’s mac and cheese might be the size of a deck of cards, and a serving of fried turkey is about as big as the palm of your hand. 3. Don’t walk into a room full of desserts without a plan: Skipping meals or forgetting to eat a light snack before party’s leaves you hungry, which makes it much

68

November 2021

harder to practice self-control. So, eat before you go. And buffet wisely y’all — only one trip! 4. Slow down and fork down: This is probably one of the biggest challenges during holiday meals. Slow down and take the time to enjoy your favorite foods. Savor the flavor and consciously put your fork down, take a drink and talk. Enjoy every morsel.

DEVISE A FITNESS PLAN TO STAY ACTIVE:

5. Keep your running or walking shoes on: Wearing active shoes makes it easier to take the stairs, take the long way around the mall or workplace or park the car farther away from your destination. Use a pedometer or smart watch to track your steps, and get them in when and where you can. We have miles of beaches and bridges perfect for walking or riding a bike on a cool, crisp day; take advantage of our beautiful coast. 6. Mini workouts actually work: We are all short on time, especially during the holidays, but 15-to 30-minute workouts build muscle, boost metabolism and are easy to fit into your busy holiday schedule. Hot yoga, for example, is a great way to torch calories in less time. 7. Schedule your workouts and take advantage of mornings: Having a schedule makes it easier to keep your exercise commitments. As you create your schedule, consider morning workouts. The beginning of the day is my favorite time to get my exercise in. Working out in the

BY KAROL BRANDT

morning is not only effective, but it frees up the rest of your day for other activities. 8. Put stress in perspective by practicing mindfulness: Mindfulness is about creating some space between you and your worrisome thoughts. Try yoga or meditation, which are great ways to slow down and recognize stressful thoughts for what they are – just thoughts. Mindfulness practices have also been shown to help with physical pain, which can add to stress. CALM is one of my favorite apps, and it is free. It offers one-, three-, and five-minute mediation breaks to destress. Finally, take a step back and remind yourself that the holiday season only happens once a year. And as challenging as it can be, you still can spread cheer. Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy holiday season. encouragement using my brace and walker, I progressed from a few feet to over 100 feet.”

The 81-year-old great-grandmother and retired elementary school teacher was leaving Cracker Barrel with her husband when she tripped and fell. 9-1-1 was called, and an ambulance transported McCardle to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. X-rays revealed that she’d need pins in her femur to fix the broken bone.

During group therapy, McCardle says, patients encouraged one another — often forgetting their own troubles and enjoying the therapists’ humor in the process.

After surgery, the Long Beach resident went to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, a partner of Memorial, which specializes in helping patients recover and regain their independence after a debilitating illness or injury, including strokes, bone fractures and other neurological and orthopedic conditions. When she arrived at Encompass Health, McCardle was most impressed with the concern shown by all the employees — from the nurses, aides and therapists to cleaning staff and cafeteria personnel. “Their attitudes, care and helpfulness were comforting to me day and night,” she says. McCardle was in rehab for two weeks and treated at home for two additional weeks. During that time, she says, “I realized how blessed I was to have been treated so royally during my therapy,” and she appreciates health care workers now more than ever. “Collegiality among all the Encompass workers and their fun-loving spirits led to an environment conducive to my healing — from wheelchair to toe touch to daily practice walking with a walker,” McCardle says. “With much

“Even though therapists were strict in a kind and compassionate way, I recognized and was made to feel proud of the smallest improvement,” she says. After McCardle had completed her inpatient treatment and was ready to return home, nurses and therapists visited regularly. Her brace was adjusted to 70 degrees of mobility, and she then progressed to using a walker without a brace. In mid-August, she resumed normal walking, and she gives Encompass much of the credit for her quick recovery. “Persistence, perseverance and patience on my part and Encompass’s part aided my complete recovery,” McCardle says, “and I feel blessed to have had Encompass Rehab as partners in this adventure.” Consistent excellence, high standards and a track record of patient success have earned Encompass Health accreditation from The Joint Commission. The hospital also received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Disease-Specific Care Certification in stroke rehabilitation. Saad Healthcare: Founded on faith, family November is National Home Care and Hospice Month — an opportunity to honor the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists and social workers who impact the lives of those they serve.  Here, team members from D’Iberville-based Saad Healthcare — Sarah Rumery, director of hospice, and CariAnn Dunning, patient care coordinator — share some insights about Saad and the role it plays in the community. HOW DID SAAD START?

Dunning: Our family has provided health care for over 50 years. Saad Healthcare was founded by our grandparents, John and Dorothy Saad, on two important principles, faith and family. Both (my grandparents) were Army veterans who served in World War II; my grandmother was an Army nurse, and both served overseas. (My grandmother’s) passion for nursing and making a difference for her patients motivated her and my grandfather to get into healthcare. They worked as a team, my grandfather in administration and my grandmother in nursing — a perfect pair. Providing quality healthcare is the foundation of our business, and today, Dorothy Saad Dunning is the administrator, along with the third generation working in our family business. Being a locally owned, family business allows us independence in providing personal care to our patients and their families.

HOW DOES YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FAMILIES USUALLY BEGIN? WHAT DO YOU TRY TO IMPART TO THEM AT THE BEGINNING?

Dunning: At times, I am the first face from Saad they may see. First and foremost, I get to know the patient and

explain our services and what we will be providing in their home. It is my goal for each patient and their families to know we are there not only to provide care to the patient, but also to make this process easier for them with us than it would be without. Our program is more than a nurse coming out for her visit or an aide coming to give a good bath and extra TLC. Our program is about treating all as our own family. From the beginning, I promise the family they will never feel alone in this end-of-life transition and that the best care will be provided to their loved one, and I stand by that promise. It is easy to make this promise with a staff as loving and professional as ours.

TO YOU TO MEET PATIENTS AT THE END OF THEIR LIVES, AND WHAT HELP OR COMFORT DO YOU PROVIDE ONCE THAT PERSON HAS PASSED? Rumery: A big part of our job consists of educating patients regarding their expected disease progression, as well as providing guidance and support regarding symptom management. Additionally, we strive to maintain dignity and to respect whatever their final wishes and goals are. Our focus is on compassionate care for the whole

DECIDING TO ENLIST HOME CARE/HOSPICE SERVICES CAN BE HARD EMOTIONALLY. HOW DO YOU AND SAAD WALK FAMILIES THROUGH THIS TRANSITION?

EATING FOR YOUR

BEST HEALTH CULINARY MEDICINE EMPOWERS PATIENTS TO PREVENT HEALTH CONDITIONS

Dr. Kerry Scott has been practicing medicine for 20 years, and he has seen firsthand how a patient’s nutritional status directly affects their health and health outcomes. “The adage ‘you are what you eat’ has some true meaning,” he says.

it’s especially helpful for those with hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, gout and a host of other conditions. Athletes and those who are active with exercise and training can also benefit from culinary medicine recommendations.

He is passionate about culinary medicine and the potential positive impacts it can have for patients, families, communities and organizations. The Culinary Medicine Specialist Program (CCMS) provided training and skills that blended both of his passions to educate patients how to live healthier by teaching them how to incorporate healthy eating and cooking in their daily routines.

“I love seeing my patients happy and feeling good about themselves. It is very heart-warming to see a patient who has struggled with their diabetes improve their blood sugars or see a patient who has struggled with their weight begin to see their BMI drop to healthier levels. These are some of the measures of patient success for me,” said Dr. Scott.

He continues, “Growing up in Mississippi, I feel blessed to have experienced some of the most delicious dishes in the country. I reflect on my great-grandparents and my grandparents growing their gardens full of tasty treats and turning them into wonderful meals. I also reflect on the long history of hypertension, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer that not only affected so many in my family but also impacted others in my community. I became a family medicine physician to help contribute to the health of my community and my state.” What exactly is culinary medicine? It’s not an alternative to medications that are prescribed to control health conditions. Instead, this specialty is an educational platform that healthcare providers can use to empower their patients to improve, and, in many cases, prevent health conditions that are associated with dietary choices. Anyone can benefit from culinary medicine education, but

He continues, “The Mississippi Gulf Coast has a beautiful culture that incorporates vibrant traditions, love of family and friends, and great entertainment, and at the center of this culture is amazing food! However, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, as well as many areas of the state and the nation, struggles with health conditions that are directly related to diet. Culinary medicine seeks to empower patients to be active participants in their healthcare by teaching them how to incorporate healthy foods in their diets and prepare their meals to preserve many of the nutritional benefits.” Dr. Scott specializes in family medicine and culinary medicine, and he is conveniently located at Memorial Physician Clinics Lakeview Multispecialty in D’Iberville. A referral to see Dr. Scott is not needed, but an appointment is recommended. Call (228) 8675000 to schedule yours today.

Conquering type 2 diabetes Endocrinology experts weigh in

N

ovember is American Diabetes Month, and Mississippi continues to be at the top of the list in overall diabetes prevalence, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Diabetes has serious health consequences, but it also can be controlled and prevented with the proper treatment. Dr. Mark Borchelt and Dr. Ellen Caswell specialize in endocrinology and help patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Here, they share their expertise on the condition and answer frequently asked questions.

WHAT ARE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES?

Dr. Mark Borchelt

Dr. Borchelt: “Most patients, unfortunately, have no symptoms of diabetes unless their blood sugar is quite elevated. When this occurs, the symptoms include excessive thirst, urination, fatigue and weight loss. Many patients will note that have to wake up during the night to urinate as well.”

WHAT ARE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR THOSE WITH DIABETES? WHAT'S ON THE HORIZON?

Dr. Borchelt: “Treatment options depend of the type of diabetes and can include oral agents or injectable options. Newer agents include GLP – 1 receptor agonists that are given by injection either once daily or once weekly (although there is also an oral option available). The SGLT2 inhibitors allow the kidney to spill sugar into the urine. Both options help with weight loss and protect against the decline of kidney function, which accompanies diabetes. On the horizon, a once-weekly insulin option may soon be available. Additionally, a new medication, Tirzepatide, promises improved blood glucose control, as well as dramatic weight loss similar to that seen with weight loss (metabolic) surgery. There are also exciting developments for insulin pumps and beta cell technology.”

HOW SHOULD PATIENTS BEST MANAGE THEIR DIET? Dr. Caswell: “The power of eating healthy is underestimated. I have seen many of my Type 2 diabetics come off of medical therapy with weight loss and changing their diet. Sitting down with a nutritionist or diabetic counselor at the time of diagnosis can be very beneficial.”

HOW IMPORTANT IS EXERCISE?

Dr. Borchelt: “Of course, exercise is important for diabetes management. Trying to find an exercise that people can do, especially if they have physical limitations (such as arthritis or orthopedic procedures) is sometimes a challenge. Walking, bike riding, swimming or other aerobic activities are recommended for a total of 2.5 hours per week.” Dr. Ellen Caswell

WHY IS DIABETES PREVENTION ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN MISSISSIPPI?

Dr. Caswell: “The complications of diabetes are serious and very detrimental to quality of life. These include vision loss, kidney damage and even loss of limbs. Some types of diabetes are purely genetic, but type 2 diabetes can be unmasked by obesity and worsening insulin resistance. Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding poor eating habits early can be the difference in developing insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes. The health of our state is greatly affected by the increasing numbers of diabetes cases. Early prevention and treatment help Mississippians live longer, healthier and with less medical burden.”

Dr. Mark Borchelt, F.A.C.E., is board certified in endocrinology at Memorial. Dr. Ellen Caswell is board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in endocrinology at Memorial. Memorial offers a Diabetes Education Wellness Program, available by physician referral, for people with diabetes. Speak with your primary care provider or call (228) 867-4000 to learn more.

M e d i c a r e S u p p l e m e n t VS Medicare Advantage With the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period upon us, I always get questions with regards to the difference between the two plans. The easiest way to explain the difference is to give you a quick history lesson. Back in the 90’s, the only option available for retirees was the Red, White and Blue Medicare Card and a Supplement with NO Drug coverage. Yes, you read that correctly, NO DRUG COVERAGE. When the government started listening, besides wanting drug coverage, they found out that seniors liked the Health Coverage they had at work. Many seniors wanted a work style health plan as a Medicare option.

“Our Policy is Taking Care of You”

In 2005, Seniors finally had the option to buy prescription drug coverage with their Medicare coverage. They were also offered an Employer/Work Style Health plan option which is called a Medicare Advantage. A Medicare Advantage Plan is basically Group Health Insurance for Seniors. It covers doctor, hospital, and drugs just like your current or past group health plan. It has a network of doctors and hospitals, it has copays, it has annual deductibles and annual max out of pockets like your current group health plan. The network is the key difference. All employer-based health plans use a Network of Doctors and Hospitals in order to control cost. The network means: if you go see Doctor “AB” and he or she sends you to Doctor “CD” in Mobile or New Orleans, what is the first thing you must do before you make an appointment? You must make sure Doctor “CD” takes your insurance. Meaning you must make sure he or she is in your Health plans Network. The Medicare Supplement works totally different. Everyone takes Medicare for the most part, so you do not have the network issues. Your Red, White and Blue Medicare Card is primary, and your supplement

is secondary. Meaning you show your Medicare card and your supplement card. Medicare only covers doctor and hospital, so you will need to purchase a separate drug plan. So what plan is best for you?? First: you DO NOT lose your Medicare if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan. This is a complete misunderstanding and it drives me crazy when I hear someone make that statement. In fact, you must have Medicare in order to enroll in a Medicare Advantage. Just remember, the Advantage plan was designed to mimic the work health coverage you had for the last 20-30 years. If you liked your work style health coverage, you would like the advantage plan. If you did not like your work coverage, then you probably will not like the Advantage plan. The question remains, what plan is best for you? To answer this, you need to ask yourself a few questions. Do you plan to travel? If so, where? Again, the Advantage plan is a networkbased plan and it may not be an option if you are traveling all over the country. If you are back and forth to Orange Beach or Destin, the network might work. Do you mind the networks and copays? If you do not like or want copays and network issues, then don’t enroll in the Advantage plan. Are you sick or healthy? If you are fighting Cancer, you need to look at the copay cost versus just buying a supplement that does not have copays. Are you looking for hassle free or do you mind a little hassle, if it can save you money? The advantage plans are cheaper, but you will have the hassle of the network and copays. The Supplement is hassle free, but it cost more. Call my office for a free quote or side by side comparison. Remember:

MY transformation STORY: AMBER FINCH

BEFORE

BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION

I had just had a baby via c-section two months prior to starting on this journey at a yoga/barre/Pilates studio and was ready to get healthy for my family.

AFTER

MY GOAL

My goal was and is to be healthy for my family, to be consistent and to be able to continue serving in my local church.

WHAT I DID

I started going to 5:30 p.m. barre classes in November of 2020, and as soon as the 5 a.m. classes became available in January of 2021, I was there Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at 8 a.m. on Saturdays.

HOW IT WORKED

It was a gradual and healthy weight loss of 22 pounds achieved by just staying consistent and making sure getting to class was a priority.

THE MOST DIFFICULT PART

The most difficult part was absolutely waking up at 4:30 a.m. to make it to the 5 a.m. class with a newborn at home. It was hard, but absolutely worth it.

HOW I FEEL TODAY

I feel fantastic! This is the strongest I’ve been since high school. My energy is sustained throughout the day. I’m able to focus on our little girl and my job and serve at my local church.

MY ADVICE TO OTHERS

My advice is to start — start small, or jump into amazing, intense classes. Don’t give up when you really want to or when you aren’t seeing as much progress as you want. Slow and steady wins the race and brings great results, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Amber is social media manager at Northwood Church and a stay-at-home mom.

Pandemic has tested minds, bodies and souls —

but hope endures BY THE REV. JAKAVIOUS PICKETT

O

ver the last year and a half, for the first time in our lives, the entire world has experienced the same thing at the same time. This global pandemic has affected each of us in ways that we never could have imagined. From quarantining and social distancing to mask wearing and the closure of businesses, schools, and even local churches, life has just been different for us all. These differences have not gone unnoticed, creating a strain mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Statistics have shown that now more than ever, people are struggling to hold things together, and diagnosis of mental illnesses, including anxiety

and depression, is rising. Many who have stood on their faith also have found their faith wavering. However, I’ve come to understand that even in a storm, the sun is subject to shine. Though things may appear to be unraveling, I believe that with faith, there is always an opportunity to grow, thrive and become better people. Through the lens of faith, we must understand that victory may not always be visible, but it is always tangible. Although we may not see victory, we can rest assured that with patience, persistence and perseverance, we can overcome any obstacle that life throws at us and achieve victory. Yes, Covid-19 is a disruptor, but together, we can become its disruptor. I often use the phrase, “We are better together.” I still believe that this is true, even amid a global pandemic. If we put aside our selfish desires and work together as a unit on the local, national and even global level, we can and will achieve superiority over a relentless virus. Remember that faith is the ability to believe when believing is totally impossible and conditions are unfavorable. We can’t allow our minds, emotions or spirits to believe that all hope is lost because it is not; our hope is growing stronger. As I close, I’m reminded of Hebrews 11:2: “Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation.” Conquering this pandemic by holding onto hope will be an inspiring story for generations to come. Because we remained persistent and unwavering, those who will read the history books will know and understand that the people of this generation were not only hopeful, but resilient. They will know that even amid global adversity, we didn’t quit, and we didn’t give up. We remained steadfast. The Rev. Jakavious Pickett is lead pastor of Praise Temple FGBC, Biloxi. MEET THE COAST’S FIRST AND ONLY FEMALE PLASTIC SURGEON

DR. ANNA PAVLOV RESTORES WHAT NATURE HAS TAKEN AWAY Dr. Anna Pavlov is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who recently opened her practice in Gulfport with Memorial. Raised in Ocean Springs, she grew up in a family dedicated to the health and well-being of the community. Her father is a family physician and has been in practice for over 30 years in St. Martin, and her mother was the former program director and executive director of the St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy in Biloxi. Through their guiding influence, Dr. Pavlov was brought up with a passion for caring for the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After completing residency training at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Pavlov chose to move back to the Coast to provide care for the community she loves. She offers cosmetic surgery of the face and body, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, body contouring after pregnancy or massive weight loss, complex wound care, facial trauma reconstruction, and hand surgery.

WHY PLASTIC SURGERY? Dr. Pavlov: “I love being able to operate anywhere on the body from head to toe. Every surgery we do is uniquely tailored to the patient because every person’s body is different, every wound is different, and every problem is different. It enables a variety of cases to walk through your door. I love having the ability to help a wide array of people.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PROCEDURE? Dr. Pavlov: “Breast reconstruction. It’s very special to be able to give a cancer survivor her body back. Femininity is intimately associated with the presence of breasts, so for our mastectomy patients it can really affect their sense of self if they haven’t had reconstruction. I am thrilled to be able to offer this surgery for our patients on the Coast.”

WHAT IS BODY CONTOURING? Dr. Pavlov: “Body contouring is surgery to improve the shape of the body. The patients most commonly seeking this surgery have

84

November 2021

had changes to their body after pregnancy or massive weight loss. Body contouring surgery includes liposuction, breast lift, breast reduction, tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, buttock lift, body lift, and even face lift.”

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PLASTIC SURGERY? Dr. Pavlov: “The most common misconception is that patients who seek plastic surgery are vain or self-centered. This is simply not true. Plastic surgery seeks to restore what nature has taken away – whether it’s facial aging, breast droopiness after pregnancy or weight loss, or a traumatic defect. Our patients come to us to restore form and function. If there is something going on with your body, ask your primary care physician if seeing a plastic surgeon might be a good option for you.” Dr. Pavlov is a board-eligible plastic surgeon at Memorial. Her office is conveniently located in Gulfport, and she uses cuttingedge care to change patients’ lives for the better. She completed her undergraduate degree at Notre Dame and received her master’s degree from Mississippi College. She graduated from medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and completed her plastic surgery residency at the University of North Carolina. Expect holiday shortages – ARE YOU READY? BY TAMMY SMITH

Suddenly, the holiday season is at hand. While it’s always helpful to plan, it’s especially important this year to not find yourself scrambling at the last minute. Because of projected shortages and delays, gifts and items we often wait to get may not be available. Here’s a handy checklist to help you prepare for 2021’s holiday season. DECORATING • Transition: Use harvest-related and nonscary Halloween decorations as part of your Thanksgiving scheme. You can even use elements like simple pinecones to further transition to a Christmas theme. • Get Christmas decorations ready to go by mid-November: Check the tree lights to make sure they all work, and look through ornaments for broken pieces. If you use an artificial tree, see if any parts are missing. • Pare down: While you’re looking through those decorations, see if there’s anything that needs to be thrown away or that you haven’t used in several years. Instead of packing useful but unused items away for another year, donate them to charity. This will help minimize the chore of storing. • Clean: If you are big on entertaining during the holiday season, do a deep clean just before the start of the parties and maintain throughout the season. SHOPPING • Budget: Be realistic and stick to it. • Shop ASAP: If there’s a toy or other item you know will be popular this year, get it or order it now — like right now. Be aware that some items may have a long wait list this year. Availability can be complicated; sometimes one component affects an entire assembly line. • Assess priorities: Could this be the year that an experience would be a greater gift than a thing? How about swimming lessons or trips to special places here on the Coast? • Make a list, check it twice – or more: Keep the list with you so that if you happen to

come across a potential gift, you know who would appreciate it best. CARDS • Schedule pictures: If an annual Christmas photo is part of your family’s cards, schedule the shoot as soon as possible – no later than November. • Set mail deadline: When do you plan to take the cards to the post office? Determine that date, then count backward to determine when you need to have them signed and envelopes filled out. • Get your supplies: Buy cards and stamps early, and have them ready to go. FOOD • Plan: Do you get confused or overwhelmed when trying to plan a meal for a certain number of people? Websites such as the Omni Thanksgiving Calculator (https://www.omnicalculator. com/food/thanksgiving) and other party calculators help you determine how much you need. • Know what’s popular: Don’t wait until the day before Thanksgiving to get cranberry sauce, stuffing mix and canned pumpkin; your store may be out. Buy these as early as possible and keep them handy. For perishables, buy these about three or four days before the event. • Make ahead and freeze: If there’s anything you can make and freeze for the celebration day, do it. That might include side dishes, casseroles and desserts.

‘wow’ worthy HOLIDAY

TA BL E

Any great hostess will tell you presentation is key when it comes to entertaining. If you’re expecting company this holiday season, here are some expert tips for making your table magical and memorable. THE FRENCH POTAGER

Martha Whitney Butler, owner of The French Potager in Bay St. Louis, based her outdoor Thanksgivingthemed tablescape on one of her favorite memories.

“When I was a child, we found ourselves with my dad not celebrating Thanksgiving at our hunting camp,” she recalls. “Much to our surprise, my mother made the threehour drive with Thanksgiving dinner and her china in tow to the camp and set it all up, picnic-style, in the field by the lodge. It was a beautiful memory, and a testament to the love of family ushered in by the holidays.”

86

November 2021

TABLE TIPS: 1. Little details such as place cards really elevate your guests’ dining experience. 2. Consider dining outdoors if weather permits. You can set up many vignettes in your yard with multiple tablescapes to make it unique. 3. Beautiful flowers, fruits and vegetables can signal the season and set your table ablaze with color. 4) Heirloom china, silver, and linen napkins make their annual appearance during the holidays. 5) There are many online references to help you brush up on the placement of your table settings for both casual and formal dining. A good rule of thumb is to place the smaller pieces on the outside and work your way in.

JOHNSON BROS. JEWELRY

“For many people, setting a table involves a lot of reminiscing and thinking of happy times; it’s something my daughters and I love to do together, and since they were very small, they’ve loved making me tell stories as we work on a tablescape,” says Debbie Willis, owner of Johnson Bros. Jewelry in Pascagoula. “Whether it’s remembering all the special people who gifted sterling flatware at a bridal shower, reliving the memory of carefully selecting each china pattern during an engagement or even running down to grab the latest centerpiece to complete a table, it should always be a fun and memorable experience.”

TABLE TIPS: 1. I like to make my guests feel special by adding something personal to each place setting. At Thanksgiving dinner, it’s a tradition in my family that each napkin is tied with that year’s commemorative silver holly Bell Christmas

ornament from Johnson Bros. Jewelry for my grandchildren to take home and add to their collections. 2. Mixing the old with the new on a tablescape is a great way to honor your past while putting your own personal touch on things. Selecting

a complimentary accent plate, adding an Annieglass charger, or even working in some new pieces like a cheese board or serving dish are all great ways to modernize and personalize your table while still incorporating these special family pieces.

HERITAGE HOUSE GIFTS:

“This year many families will host smaller crowds for the holidays,” say Julie Gainey and Stacy Pair, owners of Heritage House Gifts in Gulfport. “This tablescape provides an intimate holiday space to enjoy your loved ones. Highlighting gold and red this year, Deer Friends from Casafina provides a playful base to begin a beautiful holiday table. These sweet forest friends are the perfect background for any homemade entree.”

TABLE TIPS: 1. Use a mix of colors in your stemware when setting a holiday table. 2. Include a small gift with each place setting for your special guests. 3. Add a special piece that has been given to you by a loved one.

When considering a new construction home, choosing plans and builders can be overwhelming. Adding to the complexity, determining the best value. All square footage is NOT created equal. Pricing depends on the included features, materials used, quality of subcontractors, location, amenities and more.

TYPES OF HOMEBUILDERS Residential builders are divided into two categories, production builders and custom builders. The amount of customization allowed is what differentiates each. Some will let you change or help create everything, including the layout while others will only offer the ability to select design choices.

The Alton is available in both 3-and 4bedroom designs. The owner’s suite has several spectacular choices of bath designs, all paired with a spacious custom closet. A large great room, breakfast nook and covered patio area are perfect for game night with the family. Need more space? Elliott Homes makes it easy! 5

ways to instill gratitude in your child BY JENNIFER GENTILE

In a society that places so much value on material possessions, it can be easy for kids to take their good fortune for granted. Teaching thankfulness is one of a parent’s most important jobs, especially when many experts have cited a link between being grateful and increased happiness. So how can you cultivate appreciation in your child in a world of excess? As we head into the season of giving, here are five ways to help your child develop an attitude of gratitude: 1. SET AN EXAMPLE:

As a parent, you are your child’s most powerful rode model. They absorb your words and actions, so use that influence to show him or her what thankfulness looks like. When you’re feeling appreciative, whether for a full grocery cart, quality family time or someone else’s kindness, make sure to share that with your child. And when your child does something for you or someone else that warms your heart, make sure you express how that gesture made you feel.

2. EMPHASIZE “PLEASE” AND “THANK YOU”

Many of us can remember our own parents reminding us to use the “magic words” when we were growing up, and the message is just as relevant — if not more so — today. Saying “please” and “thank you” is more than common courtesy or politeness; it’s a display of kindness and respect that causes us to be mindful of what we ask for and receive.

92

November 2021

3. GIVE BACK TOGETHER

Show your child that he or she can make a difference in the lives of others who are less fortunate. Arrange opportunities for you and your family to volunteer together and encourage your child to donate clothing or toys he or she no longer uses. Such experiences not only help children develop empathy, self-esteem and a sense of responsibility, but they expand their worldview and foster leadership skills.

4. MAKE GRATITUDE A HABIT

Every day, make a point to take a thankfulness pause with your child. Your family may choose to take turns sharing something you’re grateful for around the dinner table, or you could talk about the day’s blessings at bedtime. This routine will help your child cultivate a consistent mindset of appreciation.

5. FIND THE BRIGHT SIDE

Even the most challenging situations and biggest disappointments can have a silver lining. When something doesn’t go your child’s way, take the opportunity to ask him or her what good has — or could — come from it. By teaching children to seek the silver lining, you’ll help them build resilience and realize how much they have to be thankful for — even on a bad day.

Hosting a party? KEEP IT SIMPLE BY ANDREA YEAGER

TIPS FOR THE PERFECT PARTY Take the fear out of holiday gatherings with a few practical tips: 1. Keep the party, no matter what kind, simple. 2. Do not do all the preparations. Let others, friends or professionals, help. 3. Relax. A relaxed host has fun parties. 4. Always greet guests at the door. 5. Immediately take jackets/ coats. You can hand them to another to hang up or put them in a room set aside for coats. 6. Take gifts and follow the same procedure as coats. 7. Introduce arriving guests to friends standing in the area. 8. Give directions to food and drinks to your arriving guests. 9. After all the guests arrive, circulates to ensure everyone is comfortable and enjoying themselves. 10. Assign someone to make sure there is enough food and drinks for everyone throughout the party. 11. Have fun. From https://etiquette-ny.com

New or reluctant hostesses often panic when they are asked to host a holiday party or even a Thanksgiving dinner, but there is no need. A little planning goes a long way in giving a successful party. Decide what kind of party it will be. Is it a sit-down dinner, a buffet, a cocktail party, a family affair with all the youngsters or a big football game party on Thanksgiving? If it is a sit-down or buffet meal, ask for help. Do not try to do it all. Set the menu for dinner, and ask guests to make one of the dishes or bring the wine or dessert. The hostess can hand out recipes for the dish or dishes she needs. Go casual for a sit-down dinner, and get creative with flannel, easy-care linens or even a quilt for a pretty table covering. These items can go straight into the washer after use and are perfect for gatherings that include all ages — no muss, no fuss. Different parties call for different menus, table settings and even decorations. Whether you’re hosting a festive holiday party or watching a big game on television, serving top-notch appetizers or snacks is a must. No, food does not guarantee the party’s success, but it certainly helps. Follow cookbook author and television personality Sandra Lee’s lead. At her parties, she does not make all the dishes or appetizers. She plays to her strengths, making the dishes she does best and then filling in with semi-homemade ones. At Thanksgiving, the hostess can prepare the turkey or whatever meat she wants to serve, make a couple of side dishes and purchase the rest from a caterer or restaurant. Perhaps not all guests like dressing; do not fret. Buy one from a restaurant or caterer who can do a smaller amount.

If a hostess makes a great pie or cake, then she should make it, but if she finds a store-bought one that tastes just as good, buy it. A Coast wholesale club makes a pecan pie as good as gram makes. This takes one less chore off the list. One big no-no is running out of food and drinks. Plan on at least 12 appetizers per person. If you are having 24 guests, then 288 appetizers are needed. If the appetizers are replacing heartier fare or a meal, then 20 hors d’oeuvre per person are more like it. Serving a large quantity of fewer hors d’ oeuvre is easier on the host. All he or she must do is double or triple the recipe. Always serve tasty appetizers, ones that the host and guests enjoy. From party to party, keep notes on which appetizers are favorites. For a cocktail party, plan on a punch, plus a variety of alcohol and mixers. A friend of mine trims party costs by offering pitchers of two different cocktails. Always have club soda or soft drinks on hand, as well as red and white wines. Punch is a must for a non-alcoholic party, or really any party. Again, have club soda, tea, soft drinks and coffee for guests. Whatever is served, be sure to relax and enjoy. After all, it is a party. Keeping it simple is best — simple, but good food, pretty-but-easy decorations and uncomplicated tablescapes. Good friends and family, music and food make any party one guests will remember fondly. Most of all, remember to have fun. A relaxed hostess makes for a good time for all. Andrea Yeager is a freelance writer living in Gulfport. Reach her at ayeager51@gmail.com.

SETTING YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOLER

on the right academic track BY ERIN GIBSON

Registering for classes in high school might sound simple, but choosing the right classes is essential. Strength of curriculum is an important consideration for students with college aspirations. One of the top factors of importance to college admissions officers when evaluating candidates is strength of curriculum, or, in other words, challenging classes that show that a high school applicant is well prepared for college.

FOR PARENTS OF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS LOOKING AHEAD TO HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND, HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS: • It’s fine to ramp up. If your student begins high school and you’re concerned he or she is not taking hard enough classes, don’t worry. It’s fine for a student to start out with the standard core courses in English, math, history and science before progressing toward more rigorous classes in their areas of strength. In other words, if your child starts high school in regular geometry and earns an A+, it might be worth a discussion with the guidance counselor to determine whether honors algebra II is appropriate for sophomore year. • Keep in mind that certain classes are prerequisites for harder classes. While showing increased rigor is good, if your child wants to take certain advanced-level classes as an upperclassman, he or she will need to take the right classes to get there. For example, an advanced placement

102

November 2021

chemistry class might require a student to take honors or advanced algebra II simultaneously (and that class may have required honors geometry as a freshman). The school course catalog lays out the different course sequences so you and your student can ensure you’re following the right sequence when it comes time to register for high school classes. • Graduation requirements might not fulfill certain colleges’ admission requirements. The guidance counseling office can advise your student, but it’s important to realize that some colleges and universities have strong transcript preferences for high school applicants. If your student’s high school requires two years of a foreign language to graduate, for example, but your student is aiming for the Ivy League, he or she should do a little research. Some highly selective colleges prefer three or more years of foreign language classes. • Middle school performance lays the groundwork. The argument that middle school academics do not matter simply isn’t true. Middle school academics set students on a particular path and teach them the habits needed in high

school. So, a student taking all honors classes in middle school is more likely to understand the workload and diligence required in high school. And the students in the middle school honors track are most likely to be recommended for high school advanced placement and honors classes. If your child has the academic ability and interest in pursuing challenging classes in high school, make sure he or she is on the right track in middle school. We often see freshmen who didn’t take honors classes in middle school become frustrated when they have to double up on classes as sophomores in order to hop over to the advanced course sequence. Our advice to parents of middle school students is to consider the future. Middle school sets students on a path, so if your student has big goals and dreams of that competitive college, it’s not too early to help them get there. PREP YOUR PANTRY for the holidays We all know the holidays are filled with big family feasts — which require extra trips to the grocery store. As BY MELANIE JONES we enter the season, it’s worth checking that you have room to store all the extra items you’ll inevitably need. If you’re like my husband, you end up shoving things anywhere and rebuying them because you didn’t know you had them already. Whether this describes you a little or a lot, I think we all could use some help with food organization as we head into the holidays. Let’s go over some simple steps to get your pantry prepared and possibly save you money. • First, remove everything from your pantry and wipe it down from top to bottom with a soapy rag. Next, go through each item and check the expiration date. Trash anything that

104

November 2021

is extremely outdated. When in doubt, Google it. You also can get rid of any food items you know you will not use by donating them to a local school, shelter or church pantry. • Now, let’s separate foods into categories. I know we aren’t all good at this, so let’s get specific. Put canned goods together, and then take it a step further by categorizing them by food type. For example, put all canned beans together, no matter what kind; kidney beans, baked beans, white beans, etc. all go in the same place. All canned fruits go together, too. Do the same with canned tomatoes and pastes, canned vegetables and so on. Put snacks like raisins, granola bars, crackers, popcorn and Jell-O together, and place breakfast foods like cereals, grits and oatmeal together, too. Breads, tortilla shells and bagels should share a spot, and the same goes for baking items like sugar, flour and cornmeal. Lastly,

pastas and boxed dinners all go together. You get the picture. • Now that you’ve finished categorizing, it’s time to place everything back in your pantry. The arrangement should be specific to your family and cooking habits. If you have school-age children, you may want to place snacks and breakfast items on a bottom shelf, allowing for easy access. • Lastly, place the items you use most on your lower shelves, and the ones you use least on your higher shelves. Tada! Your newly organized pantry will have room for all that holiday goodness, and now that you can easily see what you have, you may even save a buck or two. Happy holidays! Made with heart, imagination Craft Advisory Brewing & Bistro isn’t your typical pub BY CHRIS DEARMAN

108

Looking for a neighborhood brewpub with a laid-back atmosphere that offers delicious food and the opportunity to find your new favorite brew? Look no further than Craft Advisory Brewing & Bistro in Ocean Springs. With an outdoor patio that’s perfect for enjoying the weather and people watching, Craft Advisory prides itself on providing fresh, award-winning craft beer for locals and tourists alike. Craft Advisory Brewing & Bistro is owned by Martin and Sandra Konrad, who met in Denver, Colorado, and moved to the Gulf Coast in 2012. Their journey to open a brewpub began when Sandra got Martin a homebrew recipe book and all the grain, hops and yeast

multiple competitions and people often asking to purchase some of his brews. Posting a poll on Facebook to narrow down name choices, they opened Craft Advisory Brewing & Bistro about a year and a half ago. There are 32 taps available with a combination of beers brewed on-site, as well as some guest beers. You can buy it by the pint or sample flights of four until you find the one you like best. You also can bring some of your favorite brews home in either 16-ounce cans or growlers. “We are trying to provide something for everyone,” Sandra says. “Not everyone is a beer drinker, so in addition to the traditional-style brews

needed to make his first three batches as a Christmas gift. By mistakenly including all three grain packages, he produced a dark stout that since has been tweaked and is now a menu staple. The homebrewing hobby turned into a business after a few years of winning

you would expect to find, we offer nontraditional style beers and seltzers, such as the option to add fruit puree into our sours and seltzers to give them a fresh taste that the customer can personalize.” On our visit, my girlfriend Lauryn and I were greeted by Corey Page,

November 2021

whose official job title is “purveyor of fun.” We sampled many brews and agreed that Hoppy McHop Face, a New England-style IPA with tropical fruit and citrus flavors, was our favorite — especially the version of it called Margarita Sour, which features a simple syrup and lime mixture that reminded us of a beer that is no longer available that we both drank many years ago. “The cool thing about craft beer is that what it is for you, and what it is for her, are two different things, and we want everyone to know that it can be whatever you want it to be,” Corey says. “Martin has these crazy ideas, and it works! I think that a lot of people rest on what sells and don’t try a lot of things. You can’t blame anyone for making what sells, but we make our beer from the heart and imagination. We get really excited about it.” Looking through the menu, we were excited about the choices, which were not your average bar fare. There is a nice variety of starters, salads, burgers, tacos and entrees. “We pair those great beers with great food,” Sandra says. “This isn't your typical greasy brewpub food. The food is elevated and creative to match the style of our beers.” We started with the wonderful appetizer, the beer cheese and pretzel bites. The Belgian-style pretzels come with tasty beer-cheese queso dip made with their house-brewed Vienna larger. We finished the whole plate. Up next was a Southwest salad with grilled chicken breast that provided a little kick, and then it was onto our entrees. The half-pound, Mississippi grass-fed Craft Advisory burger, made with an Angus beef blend of filet, ribeye and strip and served with house-made Cajun dill pickles and garlic aioli, was a joy. The shrimp and grits, featuring jalapeno-cheddar sausage, bell peppers, and a creole

Martin is here most weekends and loves to sit and talk beer with any customer who has questions. “We are not trying to get customers to eat and leave, but instead to come in, ask questions, learn about how beer is made, be creative with their drinks, relax and enjoy their time with us. Cats can find their own couture, as well as food and treats, at Café BoneJour in Bay St. Louis.

CAFÉ BONEJOUR This café for dogs (and cats) is fur real! There’s a hot new hangout for pets in Bay St. Louis, and humans might be a bit envious of all the tasty offerings for their four-legged friends. Café BoneJour opened on Blaize Avenue in Old Town on June 8, and since then, pets have been pouring in. Owner Roxanne DeNicola, a New Orleans native, owns two PJ’s coffee shop franchises in the New Orleans area, so it wasn’t much of a stretch to extend her business into providing tasty things for four-legged friends. Besides, she’s the proud pet parent of five dogs: Brew, a Goldendoodle; Gracyn, an Old English sheepdog; Stassi, a Shih Tzu; Harper, a cavalier King Charles spaniel; and Finley, a pug. DeNicola moved to Pass Christian in October. Not long after, she saw a need for quality pet food when she was looking for raw food to add to her dogs’ kibble. “I’ve always been very particular about the products I use and the food I feed them,” she says. “No other place on the Mississippi Gulf Coast offers what we offer here in the quality of the pet food, treats and products.” She had been planning to open start a business on the Coast, and the seed for Café BoneJour was planted. Her fiancé came up with the shop’s clever name. Today, pet owners can find a full selection of frozen raw food, kibble and canned food and toys for dogs, as well as an array of food, treats and toys for cats. But it’s the special dog treats that really draw attention. “Our dog beer is very popular,” DeNicola says. With cute names like “IPA Lot in the Yard,” “Tail Chasin’ Blonde” and “Session… Squirrel!,” Good Boy and Good Girl Dog Beer, made in Houston, doesn’t contain any alcohol but gives pets a refreshing opportunity to join their humans in

enjoying a cold one. Then there are the over-the-top treats. S’mores, macarons, cookies, donuts, bagels, whoopie pies and tacos are just some of the options that look amazingly like their human-food inspirations. And coming soon: barkuterie boards. “Actually, everything in the treats is human grade,” DeNicola says. “They’re all top quality, so humans really could eat them.” She plans to start making her own treats, but the kitchen space is now being used for order processing. “I’m not baking in the store yet,” she says. “My kitchen is always full!” For those who aren’t an easy distance to The Bay, DeNicola can ship orders placed on the store’s website, www.cafebonejour. com. She also has a YouTube channel, Simply Rox, which features grooming, daily life vlogs, favorite products and more. The channel currently has more than 21,000 subscribers.
