Congrats

ON YOUR

ENGAGEMENT

Here’s what to do next

By Kelsie Dove

However it happened — spontaneously in conversation, alone in a favorite place or surrounded by friends and family — congratulations on your engagement! Accepting a marriage proposal marks the end of one chapter of your relationship and the start of the next. This whirlwind period before the big day provides an opportunity for planning, decision making and ensuring your wedding is everything you hoped for and dreamed of. So, what to do next? Here are some suggestions:

8

S HARE THE NEWS

You’ve just experienced the moment you’ve been waiting for. Naturally, you want to share it with everyone — and you should. Keep in mind that while social media provides a great way to spread the word quickly, it also lacks the personal touch you might want to have in this moment. Consider calling or visiting your closest family and friends before sharing the news on social media. Sure, it may take a while and require you to keep your updated status under wraps for a bit, but getting to experience the excited screams, happy tears and bear hugs will be worth the delay. And you’re sure to still get all the love on social media, even if the news is a few days old by the time you post.

“Don’t put it on social media right away,” says Meghan Armstrong, who was married 2019. “Tell people old-school style so you’re not bombarded with, ‘Oh my gosh, I saw it on Facebook!’...Then, whenever you go out, tell everyone (even strangers) because everyone loves the joy of a new engagement.”

C HERISH (AND DOCUMENT) THE MEMORIES

The engagement period can be such a sweet time for couples, so be sure to take the time to enjoy it. Consider having an engagement party with your family and friends. Take a weekend to get away with your fiancé to spend a little time alone. Whether you choose to have formal engagement pictures made or take a lot of selfies, be sure to document the time together. Years into your marriage, you’ll be thankful you did.

“His grandmother snapped a picture of us the night we got engaged. We went over to her house to tell her the news, and it was her first response,” says Katheryn White, who was married in 2013. “I treasure this picture because 10 years later, I can see nothing but joy…. “The following weekend, we got a group of friends together and went to Bourbon Street to celebrate. It wasn’t an official engagement party — just a fun ‘FINALLY!’ moment.”

S ET YOUR TIMELINE Obviously, setting the wedding date will be one of the first decisions you and your fiancé make, and doing so will help you gauge when you need to throw yourself fully into the wedding-planning process. For short engagements, planning may need to start right away, but for longer engagements, you may want to take some time to just enjoy being engaged. “I immediately jumped into planning and quickly felt overwhelmed,” says Jessilyn Griffith, who got married in 2020. “I wish I had taken a couple of weeks simply to ‘be engaged’ before starting to plan everything …. I had a year-and-a-half engagement, and I’d say I really didn’t need to start planning until around the 10-month mark.”

months from engaged to married, and I’m so glad we kept that part short.”

S ET EXPECTATIONS AND DEVELOP A MUTUAL VISION FOR YOUR DAY

The perfect wedding may look different for you than for your partner. No doubt you will have many opportunities to practice compromising and communicating, which are great skills to carry into your marriage. By beginning the planning process with an honest discussion of what you both expect, you can hopefully curtail any explosive differences of opinion. Start with the non-negotiables, and work backwards from there. Also be sure to talk about the wedding budget. That means including parents if they are footing the bill.

C ONSIDER HAVING A WEDDING COORDINATOR

While many people decide to tackle wedding planning alone, coordinators bring valuable skills and resources to the process. Having someone to direct, mediate and advise can make the difference between a stressful experience and a calm, enjoyable day.

“I wouldn’t have enjoyed my day as much without (my coordinator),” says Brittany Strebeck, who was married in 2017. “She was the buffer between me and any problems that came up on my wedding day, and it let me relax and enjoy my day.”

C HOOSE THE VENUE Start looking immediately for your perfect place to say, “I do,” and decide as soon as possible. Even if you’re planning to have a long engagement, many venues must be booked months in advance, so time is of the essence. P REPARE YOURSELF FOR UPS AND DOWNS

Wedding planning, engagement and marriage require mental and emotional fortitude. There will be wonderful moments you cherish for the rest of your life, and there will be equally difficult times you may hope you can forget. It is OK if (and when) the warm fuzzies wear off and the nitty gritty of reality gets you down. Find a way to recenter yourself and your relationship. Lean on your vision, but be willing to let go of the aspects that you established as negotiables.

“Find a statement that keeps you grounded, so when things go wrong during planning or on the day of, it calms you,” says Dee Dee Brooks, who was married in 2015. “Mine was, ‘At the end of the day, we’ll still be married.’ It reminded me where my focus should be and gave me permission to let go of some of the stress I was holding over little details about the planning aspect.”

Heather Murray, who was married in 2016, says, “I had no desire to take it slow; I didn’t want to prolong the planning and wanted to get it over with! We did six HAPPILY EVER AFTER BEGINS HERE...

edding days abound with family, friends, laughter and love, but they can be tinged with sadness when important people are not present to celebrate with us. Many brides and grooms seek to honor family members and friends who have passed away, allowing them to be a part of the ceremony in spirit. Here are some ways to include these special loved ones in your celebration: • Include framed pictures of these loved ones at the ceremony, reception or both. Many couples utilize the table with the guest sign-in book or place a special table at the front entrance to the reception. Variations of this tribute include place cards with the loved ones’ names and candles lit in their memories.

• At the ceremony, couples may choose to leave empty seats in the places of honor reserved for lost loved ones. Brooke Briggs, married in 2012, says, “At our wedding, we had two seats saved for (the groom’s) mother and father. We had some of my wedding flowers in both chairs. We took wedding photos together looking down at both chairs as well. It was special.”

• Flower arrangements offer great opportunities to add mementos in honor of those who can’t be present in person. Brides often carry pictures or precious items in their bouquets to have a piece of their loved ones with them as they walk down the aisle. At her wedding in October of 2021, Kelsey Holston carried a charm with pictures of the four family members she had lost in previous years. Her husband, Connor, had just lost his mother the month before their wedding. When he walked down the aisle with his father and brothers at the beginning of the ceremony, he brought a small bouquet with him and placed it in the chair reserved for her. When she married in 2017, Skye Roussel carried a broach that belonged to her great grandmother in her

bouquet, and her husband, Matthew, wore a locket under his boutonniere to honor his mother, whom he had lost months before the wedding. The Roussels also decorated the seat reserved for his mother with purple flowers. “Purple was her favorite color and the color for pancreatic cancer,” Skye explains. Photo provided by Amanda Pidegeon

Amanda Pidgeon used her bridesmaid bouquets to include her best friend, whom Amanda had lost a few years before her marriage in 2013. “My best friend, Robin, died in a car accident a few years before I was married. She would have undoubtedly been my maid of honor, so I had each of my five bridesmaids carry one letter of her name wrapped around the stems of their bouquets so when they stood facing my guests, her name would be there.” • Acknowledgements also can be Photo provided by very subtle and private, a secret Victoria Gosselin shared between the bride, groom and their loved ones. Before her 2016 wedding, Victoria Gosselin was surprised with a piece of her grandfather’s shirt that her mother had sewn into the inside of Victoria’s dress. Christy Elias wore her grandmother’s blue rosary pinned to the inside of her dress; it served as both her “something blue” and way to honor her grandmother. Kelsey Arde chose to honor her lost loved ones in her 2021 wedding ceremony and in an especially unique way at the reception. “In the program, we dedicated the flowers on display to our lost loved ones,” she says. “(We) also had family include their grandparents’ recipes into their food items at the reception and put their picture/name next to the dish.” While losses can be so difficult on such a joyous day, paying homage to those lost can bring tremendous comfort, and each tribute can be as unique and special as the person it honors.

Anna Claire & Josh By Cherie Ward

Spending the rest of forever together When Anna Claire Perronne was introduced to her husband Josh Perronne she suspected she had just met the man she was going to marry but had no idea the world was mere days away from a global lockdown. “He knew the moment he saw me,” Anna Claire said. “But, I was the one who said I love you first on day three. We both knew immediately.” They spent time getting to know each other as a lot of new couples did in early 2020. They chatted on Facetime and through text messages. When the time came for an in-person meeting Anna Claire said they didn’t have a problem agreeing on a restaurant. “Our first real date was at Waffle House,” she said. “The Waffle House is both of our favorites, but it was also one of the only places reopened.” Four months later, Josh bought the perfect engagement ring, hid it, and planned a proposal fit for a princess. “Eight months into our relationship he proposed in front of Cinderella’s castle in Disney World with a glass slipper,” she said. The couple had an intimate mid-morning wedding on May 14, 2022, at St. Paul Chapel in Pass Christian. The ceremony included both their families, a 10-member wedding party, and guests. In total about 80 people. Anna Claire carried a soft white rose bouquet while her father, Jimmy Giles, held her tight and walked her down the aisle in a stunning v-neck wedding dress with delicate

embroidery and sparkling sequins designed by Eddy K. Her equally stunning shoes were designed by Angela Nuran. Matron of Honor Mary Everett Little gracefully led four bridesmaids in elegant ivory dresses while Best Man Ryan Bourgeois took charge of four groomsmen wearing sharp black tuxedos. The finishing, and most special, touch was including the couple’s dogs, Buddy and Athena, at the wedding. “Those are our babies,” she said. “We love them so much.” The wedding ceremony was followed by a large reception at the Thorny Oyster in Bay St. Louis and included about 225 guests. “We invited all of our friends and family to celebrate with us with a Pat O’Brien-themed brunch,” she said. “The reception was all pink everything.” Sweet notes flooded the restaurant from the musical styles of Pianist Darin Johnson on a Grand Piano brought in by Hall Piano Company in Metairie, La. In true Pat O’Brien’s style, there were Bloody Mary’s, Mimosa’s, Moscow Mules, Lazy Magnolia Craft beer, and plenty of champagne. Thorny Oyster provided candied bacon, crab cakes, deviled eggs, French toast, fried 13

chicken, shrimp and grits, quiche, and Anna Claire’s all-time favorite Popeye’s Biscuits. Anna Claire said the most memorable part of the entire day was the touching toast her father gave expressing his feelings toward the newlyweds. “He is the person I look up to the most in life,” she said. “To hear him express how proud he is of Josh and I meant everything to us.” Married life is treating them well. The couple now lives in Pass Christian. Anna Claire is a Marketing Manager at Lazy Magnolia Brewery while Josh is a Production Operator at Chemours. And of course, Buddy and Athena keep them busy. Anna Claire said her favorite part of being married to Josh is that she gets to have a slumber party with her best friend for the rest of forever!

Finding your

DREAM DRESS BE OPEN

It is always helpful to know what you like but don’t be afraid to try on something out of the box.

SHOP EARLY

Knowing that gowns take six to eight months, we always suggest ordering your bridal gown to arrive three months before your wedding date to ensure time for alterations and bridal portraits.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

We all love a big crowd but when purchasing your dream dress, fewer opinions make for a less stressful decision. TRENDS TO WATCH

COLOR AND TEXTURE

In fall of 2021, you are going to see that color and texture take the front line of the Bridal Industry.

MODERN WITH A TWIST

You can never go wrong with a classic material such as satin and crepe but combine this with a modern twist of illusion back or square neckline and be in with the latest fashion.

DETACHABLE CAPES AND TRAINS

Next year’s brides are having fun with a removable cape or train, remember, adaptability is the name of the game.

Top 12 Rings

Well, it’s that time of the year again to round up the hottest bridal trends for 2022. Many are a continuation from 2021 but some new trends have emerged as well. Read below for the latest and greatest!

1. NEW SOLITAIRES

3. INTRICATE GALLERIES

Sure they’ve dominated for the past three years, and there are many benefits to them. However, the downside is having a ring that looks like what everyone else has. But actually, solitaires need not be boring. Interesting baskets and a unique under-gallery can elevate a solitaire from simple to stunning. A row of diamonds at the base of the head or a filigree basket gives your solitaire a one-of-a-kind look that stands out from the rest.

Speaking of your side profile, intricate galleries are a great way to add a unique touch to your engagement ring. While classic engagement rings are certainly having a moment, those of us who appreciate standout details would love an interesting gallery which is the area that can be viewed when looking at the underside of your engagement ring. Beautiful florals, a diamond-encrusted arch, and filigree swirls are just a few examples of the hidden surprises you’ll find.

2. HIDDEN HALOS

Step aside, Halo! Your more modest cousin, the Hidden Halo, has come on the scene and is dominating the halo trend. Delicately wrapping underneath your center stone, hidden halos add a nice little touch of bling to elevate your side profile.

4. THREE-STONE ENGAGEMENT RINGS

Thanks to Megan Markle, the threestone trend continues to entice new brides everywhere. Side stones need not be boring as fun shapes such as trillions, pears, trapezoids, and baguettes give your ring a unique flair. Oh, and don’t forget the whole Friendship, Fidelity, and Love bonus.

Photos provided by Pav & Broome Fine Jewelry. Visit pavandbroome.com for these styles and more.

6. ARCHITECTURAL STUNNERS

Rings inspired by architecture are a whole art form of their own. Bypass shanks, crisscrossing bands, and wraparound prongs are details that make rings fitting artwork to display in the best museums.

5. FLORAL DETAILS

Love is in full bloom year-round, so why not have an engagement ring that incorporates the romantic details from nature such as flowers, vines, and leaves? A floral halo, gallery, or shank adds a delicate and feminine flair.

7. CHEVRON STYLINGS

The V-silhouette has gained some serious momentum, and ladies from near and far are loving this daring new look. For those who appreciate geometry and crave a unique style, this ring design is for you.

8. EAST WEST

Elongated center stones such as the oval, marquise, and emerald don’t have to follow the usual rules. Flip them horizontally and you have a unique look that redefines engagement.

9. THREE STONE CLUSTER RINGS

The traditional three-stone is never out of style, and the new three-stone cluster represents mini expressions of everyday love. Fancy stones like pears mixed with rounds make for some serious side interest.

11. SINGLE-PRONG ENGAGEMENT RING BANDS

Sharing is caring and diamonds are no exception. Settings that incorporate stones that share a single prong have a dainty and feminine feel that is becoming highly coveted not only in engagement rings but in wedding and anniversary bands as well. Bonus points for stacking!

10. ALTERNATIVE ENGAGEMENT RINGS

Who said diamonds are the only choice? We can have more than one best friend, right? Meet your new “something blue.” Aquamarine engagements are not just for March birthdays. They’re a great choice for those who appreciate the calming and tranquil effect of all things blue.

12. YELLOW GOLD

An oldie but goodie and very much on the rise once again, yellow gold is the new black. This honey hue is flattering on all skin tones as well as with any outfit. And isn’t yellow gold what we think of when we think of gold at all? Your grandma will approve, trust us. HAPPILY EVER AFTER BEGINS HERE...

love story

Deidra & Stacy By Cherie Ward

Photography by JL Photos

62

The icing on the cake When Deidra Bilbro Oatis met her husband Stacy Oatis her entire mindset on marriage and life immediately changed. “I was nervous because he was so different from anybody I’ve ever met, but it was amazing at the same time,” Deidra said. “He put the time in to check in when he went places. We would fall asleep on FaceTime calls. He spoke positivity to me and really changed my whole mindset on life and marriage. He was the one.” The couple met in 2019 at Dave & Buster’s in Memphis, Tenn. when Stacy flew in from Columbus, Ga. to visit a cousin. Stacy, who was active military at the time, is from Gulfport, and Deidra was born and raised in Memphis. They had a wonderful time and made plans to spend Valentine’s Day weekend together. “It was our first time seeing each other again and he sent me plane tickets to visit him,” she said. “It was my first time ever flying on a plane and I put all my fears aside because after all of our conversations it was time to put the icing on the cake.” Stacy had sprinkled rose petals all around his home to welcome Deidra and the couple spent four days talking about everything from their families and past relationships to things they had in common. “His personality and the way he carried himself spoke volume and it was so loud I never wanted to go home again,” she said. “He made me feel comfortable, appreciated, loved, and heard. I wasn’t nervous about a guy like him anymore. It didn’t take convincing. He was the one. He was for me.” Stacy said he knew immediately he would ask Deidra to marry him.

“I knew when we met at Dave & Buster’s that I wanted to be with this woman,” he said. “From all the hours spent on FaceTime and sleeping on the phone just to have a connection and then finally meet again in person, just put the icing on the cake on how she made me feel.” The couple was married the evening of Feb. 5 at the Henry Smith house in Picayune in an outdoor ceremony before about 150 close friends and family. They both wanted an outdoor wedding with lots of fresh air because of the lingering Covid-19 pandemic. Deidra was glamorous in a Galina Signature Collection gown that featured sparkle and floral lace details from top to bottom. She had six bridesmaids in sophisticated dresses of black and apple red. “I didn’t have much to say about the wedding,” Stacy said. “But I demanded that at least one color in the wedding be black.” Stacy’s suit was custom made and his groomsmen were his older brother Richard Martin, his cousin Steven Maxwell, younger brother Takoda Browne, his son’s Godfather Efrain Rosado, and his best friend La’Terrance Wilson.

63

love story

Stacy, who had been on deployment 10 months before the wedding, gave the wedding toast. “I know it was unorthodox for the groom to give a toast at his own wedding but I had so much to be grateful for with my family and hers as well,” he said, Deidra loved her husband’s toast saying, “he’s funny and serious at the same time.” The couple now lives in Sandy Springs, Ga. Deidra is a Phlebotomist at LabCorp and Stacy is transitioning out of the U.S. Army and on his way to the Sandy Springs Police Academy. Deidra said her favorite thing about married life is knowing she has an awesome and great man for the rest of her life. Stacy said Deidra will forever be his rock and his everything and he will continue to break his back for her every day for the rest of their lives.

Emily & Jeremy By Cherie Ward

Photography by Bluewaters Photography

144

Rustic romance

When Jeremy Sims was ready to pop the question to Emily Sims he wanted an elevated proposal with more than 5,000 feet of altitude. During a family vacation in May 2021, Emily and Jeremy visited Alaska. At Denali National Park, Emily discovered Jeremy had secretly chartered a small plane to the Ruth Glacier that landed at the Don Sheldon Amphitheater. It was there at 5,413 feet Jeremy asked Emily to spend forever with him. “It was the most exciting moment in my life besides our wedding day,” Emily said. The nature of the proposal was not that surprising to Emily because the couple had spent most of the time leading up to it on outdoor adventures. They began dating in May 2020 and found it challenging to see each other when the global pandemic brought the entire world to a screeching halt. So they went on a lot of fishing trips, hiking excursions, and beach outings. “It was a little difficult, but we made it work,” Emily said. She said she immediately knew Jeremy was her one and only after just one of those outdoor adventure dates.

“I knew right away,” she said. “He was such a gentleman, and we had the same sense of humor. We also share a lot of the same interests.” She said she and Jeremy had known each other for several years before something just clicked for both of them. “Our families have been friends for years and we reconnected online a few years ago,” she said. “I just love how adventurous and funny, he is. He never fails to make me laugh and we are always finding ourselves going on exciting adventures.” The couple was married at Acorn Lane Farms in Lucedale in the late afternoon on March 4, 2022, in a rustic-style wedding with 80 of their close friends and family. “It was very rustic,” she said. “We originally wanted an intimate wedding, but it eventually turned into a bigger wedding and I wouldn’t change anything about it.” Emily wore a ball-gown style dress with a plunging v-neck that featured a chapel-length train, a delicate tulle skirt, and a sparkling beaded bodice. Her bridesmaids were stunning in sky blue gowns. Her decor colors were ivory, peachy pink, and pink

lemonade. Jeremy wore an ivory button-down navy suit and his groomsmen dressed in navy pants, white shirts, and rustic suspenders. The couple just moved to Theodore, Ala., and are busy working and getting settled in their new home. Jeremy is a Petro/Chemical Process Operator at Chevron Pascagoula Refinery, while Emily is in sales and technical support with CK Collection in Fairhope. “We’re busy,” Emily said. “But I love being able to wake up to my best friend every day knowing that we have so many more adventures to go on for the rest of our lives.”

ELABORATE CEREMONY SPACES

While the ceremony may be short and sweet, it is still a major part of your big day and your photos. (We’re talking the framers!) Celebrate the space with beautiful florals that can serve you in that memorable moment AND into your reception. Consider free-standing structures, bridal entrance arrangements, and pew markers that can be easily relocated.

PROPS = PHOTO OPPS

In the coming year, you’ll see a variety of props for photo opps at events, some serving a dual purpose like housing an audio guest book. Highlight these hightrafficked areas with flowers to create a fabulous photo opp for your guests.

This customizable phone booth from The French Potager is a perfect place to house an audio guest book and serves as a fantastic photo prop.

SUSTAINABLE CHOICES Photos by Martha Whitney Butler

A lot of couples are choosing a more ecofriendly route when it comes to their weddings. With sustainability in mind, they are selecting plants and florals sourced from from local farms, foraged native greenery, and dried materials. Your floral designer can guide you in making greener choices when it comes to the florals for your big day.

BOTANICAL BOTTLES

To highlight beautiful blooms and achieve a clean, modern look, consider botanical bottles and tube arrangements. These can be full of interesting botanicals, dried items, or a mix. For an extramodern look, you can create a table runner of single white roses in bud vases mixed with candles. To achieve a clean coastal look, mix pastel shades with wisps of dried material.

ALTERNATIVE ADORNMENTS

Floral pocket squares and lapels make a wonderful alternative to the traditional boutonnière. The floral pocket square shifts very little throughout the evening and is great for photos. The lapel provides an elegant complement to the other florals in the wedding party. Floral pocket squares and lapels offer a n e l e g a n t a lt e r n at i v e t o t r a d i t i o n a l boutonnières.

Floral trends By Rachel Bond

BRIGHT AND BOLD

While soft pastels and neutral palettes will always have a place in wedding decor, Bright and Bold is in! Brides are opting for deeper hues such as bright pinks, corals, yellows, and citrus tones.

TEXTURE

Texture always adds interest to a floral design, but this year couples are choosing unique textures found in preserved, bleached, and dried flowers and foliage. Lush greenery is taking a back seat to bleached and tinted greenery and flowers.

ORGANIC SHAPES

If the past two years have taught us anything, it is to be fluid. Loose, natural designs have taken the place of traditional, styled arrangements of the past. Flowers do not grow symmetrically in nature, and brides are loving the idea of asymmetry in their floral decor.

CENTERPIECES WITH VARIETY

Eclectic groupings of flowers and various candles are definitely in. Low compote designs paired with a few bud vases, taper candles, and votives give a table that full, lux feel without eating up too much of your budget. Rachel Bond Owner, Pine Hills Floral Designs 12 years in business

FLORALS

WHAT’S YOUR

bridal floral personality?

Both the ceremony and reception will have guests checking out your stunning bloom décor. Traditionally, bouquets, corsages, and altar flowers are incorporated throughout the wedding. Florals are also found in centerpieces, garlands, and even on the cake. Whether you’re opting for a minimalistic theme or a bold palette, your wedding flowers can really be one of the most beautiful parts of the day. The possibilities are endless, and here are the trends slated for fall from Donna Pelto, floral designer and owner of Timeless Designs in Lucedale.

ELEGANT

A monochromatic aesthetic with fresh and clean textures brought out by a variety of flowers in the same color palette. This creates a luxe vibe that is upscale and classic.

SOUTHERN CHARM

Inspired by a romanticized idea of southern life, this expression classically mixes rustic tones with an artisan touch. The palette uses pastels and ivory and is a riot of muted color.

ENGLISH GARDEN

An up-and-coming whimsical style for the eclectic and modern bride. The versatile technique works beautifully in a variety of colors and is appropriate from the backyard to the ballroom.

LIVE PLANTS

Whether it’s individual potted plants, seed packs as favors, succulents accented in bouquets or corsages-these unique touches have become quite popular with brides who want something memorable.

BOHO

Coming into its own, artlessly charming fashion combines fresh and dried elements with earthy tones to bring the natural, rustic, and vintage details to life. This chic design is one of effortless romance and elegance. Donna Pelto Owner and Floral Designer Timeless Designs

Wedding Planning checklist

10 - 12 MONTHS This timeframe is the most critical when it comes to planning your wedding. From a practical perspective if you are not an organized person, you should immediately hire a planner or a consultant to help guide you through the process. Many planners on the Coast also do fullservice design so you can have your cake and eat it too by telling the designer what you want and letting them assist you with all of the details. In some cases, a caterer or reception venue coordinator can help you with some details (linen choices, rental items, room layouts or seating plans). But generally, you want your chosen vendors to focus on what they are good at. These are the items you should deal with immediately because in most cases, there are limited options depending on the size of your wedding. During this time period you should: Book your ceremony and reception venues. Select and inform your attendants. Begin developing your budget. Start your guest list. Interview and book the following: • Planner • Band/DJ • Caterer • Photographer • Videographer • Officiant

166

GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM

7 - 10 MONTHS Purchase your dress. S elect your wedding party’s attire. Dress availability and alterations can take up to six months, so start this item as soon as possible. Have your guys fitted for their tuxedos as soon as possible as well. S et up your wedding website, hashtag and handles. R egister at a minimum of three major retailers with online offerings and at least one local gift registry store. P lan for your out-of-town guests. Reserve a block of hotel rooms at several different hotels with varying price points. These hotels should be as close to reception location as possible. S ettle on an invitation design and begin the proofing process. Your invitation may go through several renditions before it’s just right, so give yourself plenty of time. If you are planning on having your invitations hand addressed, hire a calligrapher now. S tart planning the honeymoon. Make sure your passport and any necessary shots are up to date if you will be traveling out of the country.

5 - 6 MONTHS M eet with the officiant and then plan your ceremony. If you are required to attend counseling or attend classes related to your particular faith, begin these as soon as your officiant says to. A rrange transportation for yourself and any guests. O rder your cakes. S tart your day-of timeline. Work with your planner and other vendors (DJ, photographer) to schedule any special moments you want to be sure are documented.

4 MONTHS B uy the shoes you will wearing and bring them to your first dress fitting. P urchase your veil. P lan a hair and make-up rehearsal with your stylist. Make sure they are available for your big day. V isit your DJ’s website and peruse his or her playlist. Be sure to let him or her know what songs you definitely want (especially your first dances) and more importantly, those you don’t want to hear at all. If you are planning on live entertainment, make sure they can perform your first dances or have the availability to play them digitally. P lan the rehearsal dinner. Settle on the guest list and reserve the venue. F inalize invitations and place the order. Some processes can take up to four weeks to print, so give yourself plenty of time to mail.

3 MONTHS D on’t leave your toasts to chance. Ask a select list of people to give toasts or speak at the wedding or rehearsal dinner so they have time to craft a wellconsidered speech. P lan the program and readings so your readers will have time to rehearse. S econd dress fitting. Plan to purchase your undergarments this same day. F inalize the order of the ceremony and reception. P rint programs. P urchase wedding rings. M eet with your planner or other wedding pros and finalize your day-of schedule. Type up the timeline and send it to all of your vendors (this includes photographer, caterer, baker, decorator and church coordinator). The more you plan, the less stress and drama there is on the day of. F inalize the menu and flowers. I f you are having a number of out-of-town guests, plan welcome gift bags. These need be as simple as a bottle of water, a few snacks and a list of some of the more popular tourist sites where you live.

1 MONTH T rack your RSVPs and call people who haven’t replied. N o more than 30 days ahead, get your marriage license. M ail rehearsal dinner invitations. T hird and final dress fitting. P ay your final fees to as many of your vendors as you can.

0 - 10 DAYS M eet with your planner for any last minute adjustments or confirmations you feel you need to be reassured about. A sk a trusted friend who is not in the wedding party to be your day-of “Helper.” This person is your planner if you’ve hired one. They will handle things like paying vendors, handing out tips and making sure your wedding party is on the dance floor. S end wedding timeline to wedding party. P ick up wedding dress. W rite checks for vendors, put checks and tips in envelopes to be handed out at the event. S chedule mani’s and pedi’s for you and your girls the day before the wedding. A ssemble and distribute welcome baskets. P ack for honeymoon.

2 MONTHS M ail invitations. RSVP cut off should be about 10 days before the wedding. S tart writing those thank you notes. You’ll thank yourself for getting a head start on this! C hange up date night with dancing lessons. Dancing to your first dance several times with some expert guidance can help ease those jitters. P lan your photography shoot list and then meet with your photographer to make sure he/she knows exactly what moments you want captured. F inalize your playlist with your band or DJ.

AFTER WEDDING G et your thank you notes out as soon as possible. You have up to a year. B e sure to update your personal documents if you are changing your last name: Driver’s license, passport, insurance paperwork, bank accounts, etc. T ake a moment to call your loved ones and say how much you love them and appreciate how they helped you all through this process. CASH CONTROL

If the two of you are paying for your own wedding (which more and more couples are), you might want to head to your marriage counseling classes before you tackle this one. Setting a budget is easy, sticking to it is another matter altogether. Even if your families are going to assist with paying for your big day, you should be respectful of everyone’s budgetary limits. Here is a list of the most common items you will need to pay for and a suggested percentage for each category. This is a flexible list and you may decide to spend more on one thing and less on another based on what is most important to you for your big day.

PLANNING

WHO PAYS FOR WHAT? Bride: Groom:

ervices of a wedding S consultant

I nvitations, enclosures, and announcements (don’t forget the stamps on the RSVP cards!) he bride’s wedding gown T and accessories The groom paying for the bride’s bouquet is an interesting concept and something that is staging a bit of a comeback. We think it’s a sweet gesture, but not commonly done here on the Coast.

More than one mom has said, "If I knew how much work this was for my first daughter, I would’ve hired a planner then." Hence the reason this item is number one on this list and should be on yours as well!

loral decorations for the F ceremony and reception, bridesmaids’ flowers he bride’s bouquet (unless T it is customary for the groom to pay for it) usic for church and M reception

ransportation of bridal party to T ceremony and to reception All reception expenses hotographer, wedP ding photographs, wedding albums Videographer and finished DVD

This is one of those instances where the rules are out the window. Weddings are expensive and in lots of cases, the bride, groom, her parents, his parents and sometimes aunts and grandparents are paying these expenses.

Transportation and lodging expenses for the officiant if from another town and if invited to officiate by the Generally, bride’s family this is only

reserved for those attendants who are from out of town and do not necessarily need two nights (or more) at a fancy hotel. Most families have plenty of extra beds to accommodate these attendants without spending too much money.

Accommodations for bride’s attendants Bridesmaids’ luncheon, if hosted by the bride or her family

Bride’s gifts to her attendants Bride’s gift to groom Groom’s wedding ring

170

Here in the South, there is a committee of ladies that put together all types of showers and little parties. This is the case here as well. The hostesses will plan the menu, provide the decorations and generally have fun cooing over the bride and her attendants.

GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM

B ride’s engagement and wedding rings

Guys still really wear gloves? Hmmmm…

Groom’s attire

Same goes for the out of town attendants of the groom. Most families have plenty of extra beds to accommodate these attendants without spending too much money.

Ties and gloves for the groomsmen, if not part of their clothing rental package Accommodations for the groom’s attendants

Accommodations for the groom’s parents and siblings Bachelor dinner, if the groom wishes to give one All costs for the rehearsal dinner Officiant’s fee or donation

In more cases than not, these expenses are shared with the rest of groom’s attendants.

Transportation and lodging expenses for the officiant, if from another town and if invited to officiate by the groom’s family The marriage license Now this one is a throw back. And not one we remember anyone in recent memory asking for. We’ll keep it on the list. It’s a romantic idea, though.

Transportation for the groom and best man to the ceremony The bride’s bouquet (when it is local custom for the groom to pay for it) The bride’s going away corsage, if wearing one

Boutonnieres for groom’s attendants Corsages for immediate members of both families (unless the bride has included them in her florist’s order) The officiant’s fee or donation Groom’s gift to bride Gifts for groom’s attendants Honeymoon expenses

This item and the one just above about boutonnieres, while a good idea, is more about practicality and cost savings. While it is certainly a nice thought to pay for these items, one person (usually the bride along with her planner) should handle all of the floral/ decor needs for the wedding so nothing gets forgotten in the shuffle.

PLANNING

THE

TOP PLANNING TIPS &

Secrets

By Camara A. Carter 1. BUDGET

Many couples usually go over budget trying to WOW their guests. Honestly speaking most guests will not remember the small detail that you wreck your brain trying to provide. Rethink all print

2. VENDORS

Do not be afraid of small businesses. Make sure your vendors treat your day like it is their own. If you do not feel comfortable do not be afraid to voice your concerns to your vendor. That is why you are paying for. Most will go over and beyond to achieve your goal. Word of mouth is the best advertisement.

172

GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM

3. STRESS

The couple has the right to say NO and to also change their minds! Nothing is permanent until you walk down the aisle. If they are not paying for your day their opinion or presence is not needed. The day is about you and your spouse, anyone else is an extra bill. Weddings cost and you should be happy to spend the money on them. Rule of thumb would you treat this person to dinner? Then why are they invited to your wedding!

Dear Bride...

HERE’S WHAT YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER WANTS YOU TO KNOW! After years of dreaming and months of planning, the wedding day is gone in a heartbeat. That’s why photographers are one of the most important vendors you’ll have—they capture every moment of your love story so you can hold onto those precious memories for a lifetime. Whether they’re for your engagement, bridal portraits, or wedding day, the photographs commemorating this special time in your life should both look and feel classic, joyful, and timeless. Here are bridal tips from expert photographer Leighann Roush, owner of Bluewaters Photography in Pascagoula.

BEFORE THE BIG DAY

You and your partner should practice everything from kissing to dance moves. There are lots of amazing ideas online to help and you’ll have a blast trying to decide which ones to use. Your photographer can also show you examples.

BRIDESMAID DUTY

Have a bridesmaid identify and locate people on your list that you want in formal pictures to keep guests from leaving the area to locate others. Make an announcement at the rehearsal dinner to remind family and friends, your bridesmaid is in charge of photos, they should not walk off after the ceremony, and need to be prepared to take formal portraits.

GUEST REMINDERS DURING THE BRIDAL WALK

Nothing ruins a photo quicker (and maybe a friendship) than a guest with sunglasses on their heads or a cell phone to their ear. Remind your wedding party, friends, family to remove phones, keys, sunglasses from their front pockets and off their heads during pictures and walking down the aisle.

GUEST REMINDERS DURING THE CEREMONY

Every bride wants the focus to be on her dress, hair, and makeup-not swimsuit or spaghetti strap marks. Either remove the straps or cover up your shoulders.

Have your officiant announce there is no cell phone or flash photography during the ceremony. Remind them you have a professional photographer capturing every moment of your special day.

SUNLESS TANNING

MAKE A GRAND ENTRANCE

SUNTAN LINES

Do a trial run for a spray tan or self-tanner to see how your skin will look in photographs so you can prevent looking orange or splotchy on your wedding day.

DRESS FITTING

Have a bridesmaid record the seamstress showing you how the dress should be bustled during your final fitting. This is beneficial when you’re in a hurry to get to the dance floor for various dances you wish the photographer to capture.

MAKE A CHECK LIST

Create a list of people you’d like to photograph throughout the day and during formal photographs by name and grouping. It’s easy to forget who you’ve taken a photo with and having the list will help your photographer ensure you get all the photos you want, and keep you stress free. 176

GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM

Before you are announced at your reception be sure to hide out for 15 to 30 minutes. Catch a little alone time with your new partner while allowing your caterer a chance to prepare the plates.

DON’T FORGET THE SUNSET

Allow a few minutes in your timeline to sneak away with your photographer for sunset pictures. You won’t regret it.

THANK YOUR VENDORS

All of your vendors will work incredibly hard to make your wedding day special. Schedule a last dance with your vendors as a thank you as your guests are preparing for your grand exit. Leighann Roush, Bluewaters Photography 228-355-9643 www.bluewatersphotography.net

VIDEOGRAPHY

SECRETS FROM A

Wedding Videography Team

When looking for a videographer, find one who best matches your style. Planning a wedding is far from easy, and many couples get wrapped up in detailing the perfect day. It’s easy to forget vendors have gone through hundreds of weddings, and can provide invaluable guidance. Here are the secrets your wedding cinematographer wants you to know from Mattlan Lander, a six-year cinematographer and owner of Cinemattic Moments, LLC in Kiln.

YOU WON’T MISS A THING

By combining the quality of a moving video as well as sound design, video captures the entire essence of your day. You will be able to see all of your own emotions as well as those of your partner, your loved ones, and your friends. You will get to hear the ambient sounds of your day as well as your vows and even the sentiment in your voice when you say I Do. Video is an immersive experience that many say is the easiest way to relive their wedding day since it immediately takes them back to how they felt in each moment.

KNOW YOUR STYLE

When looking for a videographer, find one who best matches your style. Do you want a cinematic and timeless style of edit? Or would a fun and fast-paced

178

GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM

edit better match the energy of your day? Watching a videographer’s work and portfolio can be a fun process to decide on what style would be perfect for the wedding you’re planning.

PRESERVE YOUR WEDDING DAY FOR THE FUTURE

Consider preserving the quality of your wedding film by finding a videographer who offers 4k Videography. We are used to seeing many videos on TV and online in HD or 2K. However, as video quality continues to improve, more and more of the content we see online and on TV will be upgrading to 4k.

INSPIRATION & COMMUNICATION

Look for inspiration, and communicate it to your videographer. If you see something in someone else’s wedding film you loved, tell your videographer so they can understand and execute your vision. Wedding videographers are happy to implement creativity into their job, your wedding film, and your wedding day. Mattlan Ladner Owner/Cinematographer Cinemattic Moments 6 Years of Experience!

Follow these tips to look flawless on your big day By Lauren Riley

Are you getting married soon? Do you need help with your hair and makeup prep? Here are my best tips to ensure you look stunning on the big day. Hair and makeup are important elements of your wedding, and trust me, your glam squad will be so thankful you did your homework. 1. All facial waxing should be done at least seven days before your wedding. 2. If you use a daily moisturizer, make sure it does not contain sunscreen. It can cause flashback in pictures. 3. Schedule a trial run. Knowing what you like and don’t like is so important to your hair and makeup artist, and we want you to look and feel your best. 4. Bring pictures of your favorite makeup looks, whether you find them on the internet or have done them yourself. 5. Remember, Pinterest hair is a warped reality. Most of the women in those pictures have more extensions than you could even fathom. 6. Speaking of extensions, you can add clip-in extensions to nearly any hair style. Discuss that with your hair team and devise a plan. 7. Steam your dresses the day before. Steam can cause your makeup to break up and your curls to fall. 8. If you don’t like certain looks, products, etc., let your hair or makeup artist know (for example: dark eyebrows, thick eyeliner). 9. Lashes complete the look. If you are new to false lashes, let your artist know. He or she always can use a smaller lash. However, regardless of size, expect them to feel weird for about 20 minutes.

10. If you aren’t used to a bold lip, don’t try it on your wedding day. Try it ahead of time, or just skip it altogether. 11. Ask your makeup artist in advance if he or she will be touching up your lip color; if not, ask how you can get that service. 12. The more water you drink beforehand, the more hydrated your skin is. The more hydrated your skin, the better your makeup application. 13. I know sleep the night before your wedding is hard to come by, but try to get some rest. This is the longest and most rewarding day. Make sure you enjoy it. 14. Be present in the moment. This day only comes once, so embrace every second. 15. Lastly, remember most of the time, wedding days are never on schedule. Take a deep breath, relax and remember the reason you are there. You get to marry the love of your life. If you are reading this, I am so excited for you! This is such a huge milestone. Congratulations on entering this new stage of life, where you gain a new last name and the partner of your dreams. Marriage is such a beautiful thing, and with a bit of planning, you will be at your most beautiful as you and your spouse begin your new life together. BRIDAL HAIR By Bria Fowler

A

s an artist, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be able to speak on something I hold dear to me. I love being able to be there for brides and their bridal parties on their special day. The trends lately have been soft and elegant. While the day warrants an effortless flair, as a bridal stylist, I know these soft styles have to last an entire day full of photos. When I add my touch, I strive to make it last. I’ve also been daring natural-haired brides to embrace their own natural curls, coils and kinks. I worked with a bride-to-be earlier this year on styled shoots, and seeing her embrace her beauty and natural hair with help from my skills has been so amazing. The smile that comes from her is so genuine when she sees herself in her truest form. That’s the moment I strive for with brides, the genuine happiness on a day to celebrate their love.

TIPS FOR THE BRIDES:

I would say have an open mind when it comes to your chosen style. The starting point will change based on your hair’s thickness, it’s ability to hold curls, length etc. Most styles brides fall in love with have an extra special something that makes the picture look flawless. In reality, hair may have been added or an extra piece for fullness. When that understanding is made, we as stylist and client can come together to make something that’s unique and special for you. Also trusting that a seasoned stylist is trying to help your styles last longer with a tighter curl. Starting with soft curls looks beautiful and elegant for your initial pictures but what about when you get to the reception? Your wispy pieces are now completely straight, your stylist has your back when we give you that bouncy curl hours before your ceremony. A connection and trust goes a long way on your special day!

MINI CAKES

Just as micro weddings are on the rise, so are micro cakes. Couples are opting for one to two tiers to cut for the photo op and serving individual desserts to guests.

SEPARATED TIERS

Give your cake new height with this trend that is quickly taking over 2022. These clear pillars can be hidden with frosting, filled with flowers or left visible to make a big statement.

EDIBLE BLOOMS AND CLASSIC GREENERY

From pressed sugar flowers to real foliage decorations, couples are giving their cakes the botanical treatment.

ALTERNATIVE SWEET SPREADS

Not everyone wants the large, centerpiece cake towering over their reception. At weddings this year, don’t be surprised to see cookie or pie tables, donut stacks or other sweet options in lieu of a traditional cake.

SEMI-NAKED

Minimal design has always been around and this year, semi-naked cakes are here to stay.

Honeymoon

Trends

At Beloved Getaways, we are noticing that clients are willing to pay more for honeymoon trips than they were before. Now that we are two years into the pandemic, couples are tired of postponing and waiting; newlyweds are moving ahead with honeymoon plans and are more willing to travel farther and pay more for trips to bucketlist locations. Clients are also upgrading their experiences, lengthening their trips, picking luxury properties, and taking private tours. There has also been a clear shift of requests from traditional travel destinations to more far-flung, adventure-oriented ones. Before the pandemic, couples planning their honeymoon usually started off with a destination in mind, not a place to stay. However, accommodations are now the starting point for trip planning. Interest in all-inclusive resorts will always be popular and is booming, but people also want the swim-up rooms or rooms with a private plunge pool. And everyone wants that over-the-water bungalow experience. One of the most requested vacations will always be a relaxing trip to a nearby beach. Internationally, Mexico is one of the most appealing picks for warm weather escapes. There are also Caribbean nations; Turks and Caicos, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic are high on travelers’ lists these days. Hawaii, Florida, and Puerto Rico top the list for domestic beaches, although they are not all inclusive destinations. Island destinations such as the Maldives and Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, or Tahiti and Fiji, in the South Pacific, offer couples escapes to private huts, villas and bungalows that guarantee fewer interactions with strangers. As always, Americans are still eager to get to Western Europe: Greece, Croatia, Italy, and Iceland continue to be high priorities for travelers. A huge request lately has been a suite with a private pool in Santorini or on the coast of Italy. Many people love the thought of being on Safari and seeing animals in their natural habitats. As such, desert safaris are attracting visitors to Northern Africa and the United Arab Emirates. We are also noticing that clients will request to stay in Dubai for a couple of days before flying to their next destination. Regardless of your honeymoon destination and desires, Beloved Getaways will happily customize itineraries designed to your specific interests.

One of the most requested vacations will a lways b e a r e l ax i n g t r i p to a nearby beach.
