Perhaps it happened during a quiet moment between just the two of you. Maybe hetippedooyourliends and family, so your nearest and dearest got to witness your happy tears. However the proposal happened, congratulations on your engagement! The wedding journey is just beginning, and as any bride can attest, the to-do list can get overwhelming in a hurry. Our advice: Take the process step by step, and make the most important decisionsurst.ow N that you have the ring, here’s what to do next:

Tell your VIPs, either by phone or in person, before posting the news to social media.

SET BOUNDARIES

Be prepared for a deluge of opinions about when, where and how you should get married, and accept that you can’t please everyone. Avoid committing or agreeing to anything for the first few weeks while you and your fiancé hone your vision. In the meantime, receive suggestions gratefully, but don’t feel obligated to say “yes.”

SET A DATE

You can’t make many other decisions until you know when the big day will be, so first things first. You may immediately have a season in mind, or even dates that are meaningful to you and your significant other, so you can start there. Take care to avoid any scheduling conflicts for your VIP guests, and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan — bearing in mind that many popular vendors are booked a year or more in advance.

SET A BUDGET

Like your date, you need a budget before you can do much else. Be clear on who is contributing what, and communicate early and often, to prevent misunderstandings later. Head count greatly affects the bottom line (not to mention the size venue you’ll need), so tailor your guest list to what you can reasonably afford.

START RESEARCHING VENUES

This step may well determine your wedding date, as it may depend on when your preferred venue is available. When choosing where to hold your wedding, make sure the venue aligns with your vision, fits your budget and can accommodate your guest list comfortably.

Coordinating a wedding can get overwhelming quickly. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, so pause to enjoy it before launching into planning mode.

Planning in a pandemic Without a doubt, the COVID-19 crisis continues to impact wedding plans across the globe. Whether they’ve had to postpone their nuptials, cut their guest lists or incorporate virtual options, couples certainly have faced some tough decisions. But what some have seen as challenges, others have viewed as opportunities to let their creativity and ingenuity shine. Even as the world returns to some semblance of normalcy, some changes and trends caused by COVID are likely to be with us for a while to come. However, with vaccines now readily available, there may be light at the end of the tunnelforhopefulbrides.Asyouplanyourcelebration,hereareuvepandemic-relatedtipstoconsider:

STAY UP TO DATE ON THE LATEST COVID-19 GUIDELINES

Stay informed on the latest COVID-19 guidelines for your wedding location. Gathering capacity limits, guidelines and restrictions fluctuate from state to state or country to country and are continuously changing. Be sure to regularly visit the official website of the city and/or country where you are getting married to ensure you keep yourself and your guests up to date. CREATE A PLAN B

Choose what’s best for you and your future spouse. Though you may no longer feel comfortable having the big wedding you dreamed of, there are several options available to make the day special: • Elopement is on the rise and has even become an Instagram-worthy trend. • Throw an outdoor soiree. Open-air and space allows for social distancing. • Scale back your guest count for an intimate affair. • Celebrate virtually with a live stream. (Because what’s not on Zoom these days?) • Postpone or reschedule your date.

PRACTICE OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR VENDORS AND WEDDING PROS

During a pandemic, things can change in an instant. Besides the obvious health considerations, COVID has affected the supply chain and availability of goods and services, and many vendors are operating with fewer employees and longer wait times for the items they provide; don’t wait until the last minute, or you likely will be out of luck. Additionally, be sure to know your vendors’ cancellation and reschedule policy in the event of a COVID-19 exposure, and convey any concerns or changes immediately.

SAFETY FIRST

Let your guests know you care about their safety as they celebrate your big day. Make masks and hand sanitizers readily available.

Coastal romance May 16, 2020, marked the last date night Evans Tedford would have with his girlfriend, Lauren Taylor, for a while — so he made it count. He treated Lauren, whom he’d been dating since 2016, to an unforgettable steak dinner at home. The pair met when they both worked as restaurant managers at the Beau Rivage, and on weekends, they took turns making dinner for each other. On this particular Saturday, it was Evans’s turn. With the Beau set to reopen soon, he faced 70-plushour weeks for the foreseeable future. Intimate meals together were about to become rare, so Evans dialed up the romance with Lauren’s favorite champagne and a lifechanging surprise. As Lauren sat on their back patio, Evans brought her a drink menu featuring custom cocktails named after them and their two bulldogs, Ellie and Lucy. “The last cocktail on the menu was named ‘An Orange Label Toast to Us,’ and the description said, ‘A toast of Lauren’s favorite to celebrate getting engaged,” Lauren recalls. “When I looked up, he was down on one knee, and our bulldogs were in bowties!” The sweet gesture was the culmination of a relationship that began platonically but blossomed into love. “We are truly best friends,” Lauren says. “We became best friends before we ever started dating, and I think it is pretty evident to those around us that we just compliment and complete each other.” Once they were engaged, the couple knew they wanted to be married by the end of the year. They’d originally

planned to elope somewhere tropical, Lauren says, but due to the pandemic, “there were too many everchanging travel restrictions to plan anything of the sort.” They opted instead for a wedding on Nov. 13 at Belle Fontaine Beach in Ocean Springs, with a happilyever-after celebration at The Sandhill Beachhouse the following day. The couple created a “coastal romantic” vibe for their wedding with a beachside setting, a sunset backdrop and the bride’s lace dress. “Luckily, with us both being in hospitality and being extreme planners, I think we had everything planned within a month,” Lauren says. “It was more important to us to have a stress-free wedding day, and then have our family and friends join us the next day for a fun celebration.” For the bride, the most special moment of her wedding day was hearing the vows her groom had written for her. For Evans, she thinks the highlight was the personalized video she sent him of New Orleans Saints defensive end Cam Jordan offering both real and comical martial advice. Even their bulldogs were represented in a pair of

custom socks designed for the occasion that bore their faces. Today, Evans is director of food and beverage at the Beau Rivage, and Lauren is the catering sales manager for Levy Restaurants at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center. They are settled in St. Martin and eagerly awaiting their first child, who is due in February. In the meantime, the newlyweds are enjoying their just-married bliss. “Evans is the most supportive partner I could ever imagine,” Lauren says. “He has always supported me in everything I do … .”

Disney-loving high school sweethearts exchange vows Molly Manning and Drew Lee were both Disney fans while growing up in Ocean Springs, and when they met in high school, they discovered that was one thing they had in common. “Drew and I met my freshman year and his sophomore year in high school through a similar class we had,” Molly said. They dated through high school, and she says, “Our relationship has been unique from the very start.” “We are similar and different in the very best ways, so our dynamic is constantly evolving and growing,” Molly adds. “We were long distance during college from 2016 to 2018.” The Disney fans both moved to Orlando, Florida, in 2019 to work in the Disney College Program, but a few weeks before starting their jobs, they decided to celebrate Christmas — another of their shared passions — at the Magic Kingdom. They joined a long line of guests awaiting Christmas morning Disney castle photos. Once their turn arrived, Drew bent down. “I am the worst morning person! When Drew was proposing, I thought he was bending down to tie his shoe in the middle of the pictures, but it all made a lot more sense when he pulled out the ring!” recalls the bride. “This story makes me giggle because it gives a little insight into Drew’s silly personality and how he always keeps me

guessing. “Drew knows that I’m bad about ruining surprises, so he planned the proposal for early in the morning so he could catch me off guard.” The couple chose May 16, 2020, as their wedding date because it fell on the seventh anniversary of the day they began dating. “It also was the date of the 50th anniversary of his maternal grandparents,” Molly says. “We love the sentimental meaning behind our wedding date.” But COVID complicated their plans. “Our original wedding was supposed to be in New Orleans with all of our extended friends and family,” Molly says. “For the safety of our loved ones, we held a small ceremony with only our parents, siblings and grandparents. We were committed to keeping everyone safe with social distancing, masks and lots of hand sanitizer.” The Lees’ ceremony was at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Ocean Springs, with 15 guests, and the reception was held Dec. 19 at the Grand Magnolia Ballroom & Suites in Pascagoula. “When we were planning our reception, we were unable to book our original venue in New Orleans due 63

to availability, so we found a smaller, beautiful venue in Pascagoula where we were able to celebrate with close friends and additional family,” Molly says. The most special part of their wedding day was opening gifts they had exchanged the night before. “Drew surprised me with a locket that had an ‘L’ engraved in it and two photos inside, one of my grandfather and one of his mother, both (of whom) celebrated our marriage from heaven,” Molly says. They honeymooned in Orange Beach, Alabama — a nearby destination that also offered an opportunity to practice social distancing. Molly and Drew now live in their hometown of Ocean Springs. Drew, 24, works for Techtronic Industries as a field sales and marketing representative, and Molly, 23, works for Lagniappe National Construction as a junior estimator. Life experience has helped their relationship grow stronger over the years, Molly notes. “I might be biased, but I think those who are around us can tell the love that Drew and I have for each other just 64

by spending time with us,” she says. “We make each other laugh, support each other and help each other growing constantly. “Being high school sweethearts, (we have) evolved so much and experienced so many life-changing events. Overcoming the growing pains of a long-distance relationship and becoming new people in college, our relationship looks completely different now than when we were 15 and 16, and it’s stronger because of the changes in life we’ve gone through together.”

'God made us for one another' Bailey Hedgepeth and Hunter Buckley’s love story began online, and you might say it was love at first click. “We actually met on Match.com,” Bailey says. “We started talking in December 2019; we met in person for the first time in the beginning of January 2020, and we were engaged by June 25, 2020! We had only known each other for a year when we got married, but there was no question that God made us for one another.” Bailey knew Hunter was a great guy, but she initially had slight hesitations. “Hunter is such a wonderful person!” she says. “At first, I was very guarded when it came to him because he was so nice. He almost didn’t seem real because he was such a perfect man, and good things like him don’t normally come my way.” But Hunter was for real, and as their relationship deepened, Bailey discovered that one of his qualities especially meant a lot to her. “I love everything about him, but one thing in particular that I adore is his patience,” she says. “He is so patient with everyone and everything, and that was the number-one thing that attracted me to him.” Their romance was somewhat long distance, since Bailey lived in Union, in central Mississippi, and Hunter lived near Hurley. “When we were getting serious about getting engaged and married, my parents decided to move to the Coast – also because we are a really close family, and ‘three hours is just way too far to live away from your daughter,’ my mom says,” Bailey recalls. During that move, she got a thrilling surprise. “While we are all helping move into the new house, he just pulls the ring out of his pocket and asks me to marry

him!” Bailey says. “I was expecting him to ask me soon, but not that day. But I wouldn’t have it any other way!” The couple chose Nov. 14, 2020, as their wedding date. “COVID definitely put a damper on some of our plans,” Bailey says. “I was terrified that everything would shut down and we wouldn’t even be able to have a wedding at all. “In the end, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway because we would have gotten married that day whether we had a ceremony or not; but I still wanted to have a day to celebrate Hunter and me with our close family and friends.” Bailey and Hunter agreed on having only two bridesmaids and two groomsmen so they could invite as many family members as possible and not be over the limit of guests. Bailey’s sister was maid of honor, which meant she had one open bridesmaid spot. “That was extremely hard because I had to choose between two of my closest friends, both of whom I love so much ...,” she says, “but it all worked out in the worst, yet best, way because my bridesmaid I had chosen was exposed to COVID five days before the wedding.” Emergency bridesmaid to the rescue! “So, I asked my other closest friend, and without hesitation, she jumped in and was there when I needed her most,” Bailey continues. “We luckily found a bridesmaid’s dress the exact color and exact size on the rack at David’s Bridal the Thursday before the wedding. “We could invite only family and close friends to share our special day with us. It broke our hearts having to 143

pick and choose who we could and couldn’t invite to the wedding. We had some family members with health issues at the time, and keeping them safe was way more important to us than anything else.” At the ceremony, held at the Venue at Southern Oaks Farm in Gulfport, the couple had a memory table for loved ones, such as Bailey’s late grandmother and Hunter’s late grandfather. “We also watered an orange tree for our unity ceremony because Hunter has grown up in the plant nursery business, and the nursery means a lot to him,” Bailey says. “He is a third-generation nurseryman, so we wanted to involve that in some way.” With about 50 people in attendance, the numbers were just enough for the couple to visit and relax with family and friends following the ceremony. “We actually had the ceremony and reception in the same building,” Bailey says. “We just had small finger foods in the back, and everyone just kind of snacked and visited while the kids of the family played outside.” During their honeymoon in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, 144

Bailey and Hunter had an unplanned adventure. “We locked ourselves out of the cabin and had to wait a couple of hours to get someone to let us back in,” Bailey recalls. “One of the doorknobs didn’t have a key to unlock it, and the property owners didn’t let us know. So, we locked the door that morning and went on about our day. “Late that night, we went to go inside, and guess what? We couldn’t unlock the door. So, we called the manager of the property, and he tells us there is normally a key hidden somewhere around the cabin.” Despite carefully looking for it, the couple never found the key. About two hours later, the manager arrived but couldn’t unlock the door either. “So, he had to break the door to get it open, but luckily the door wasn’t broken enough where it wouldn’t open and shut,” Bailey says, “so it just got left like that for the rest of our trip, and we did not lock the door again!” Hunter and Bailey live not far from G&H Nursery which Hunter, 27, and his brother Garrett own. Bailey, 21, helps out as needed. The newlywed sees their love story as something

divinely arranged. “We met and fell in love so quickly, but when you know, you know, I guess! Wedding Planning checklist

10 - 12 MONTHS This timeframe is the most critical when it comes to planning your wedding. From a practical perspective if you are not an organized person, you should immediately hire a planner or a consultant to help guide you through the process. Many planners on the Coast also do fullservice design so you can have your cake and eat it too by telling the designer what you want and letting them assist you with all of the details. In some cases, a caterer or reception venue coordinator can help you with some details (linen choices, rental items, room layouts or seating plans). But generally, you want your chosen vendors to focus on what they are good at. These are the items you should deal with immediately because in most cases, there are limited options depending on the size of your wedding. During this time period you should: Book your ceremony and reception venues. Select and inform your attendants. Begin developing your budget. Start your guest list. Interview and book the following: • Planner • Band/DJ • Caterer • Photographer • Videographer • Officiant

7 - 10 MONTHS Purchase your dress. S elect your wedding party’s attire. Dress availability and alterations can take up to six months, so start this item as soon as possible. Have your guys fitted for their tuxedos as soon as possible as well. S et up your wedding website, hashtag and handles. R egister at a minimum of three major retailers with online offerings and at least one local gift registry store. P lan for your out-of-town guests. Reserve a block of hotel rooms at several different hotels with varying price points. These hotels should be as close to reception location as possible. S ettle on an invitation design and begin the proofing process. Your invitation may go through several renditions before it’s just right, so give yourself plenty of time. If you are planning on having your invitations hand addressed, hire a calligrapher now. S tart planning the honeymoon. Make sure your passport and any necessary shots are up to date if you will be traveling out of the country.

5 - 6 MONTHS M eet with the officiant and then plan your ceremony. If you are required to attend counseling or attend classes related to your particular faith, begin these as soon as your officiant says to. A rrange transportation for yourself and any guests. O rder your cakes. S tart your day-of timeline. Work with your planner and other vendors (DJ, photographer) to schedule any special moments you want to be sure are documented.

4 MONTHS B uy the shoes you will wearing and bring them to your first dress fitting. P urchase your veil. P lan a hair and make-up rehearsal with your stylist. Make sure they are available for your big day. V isit your DJ’s website and peruse his or her playlist. Be sure to let him or her know what songs you definitely want (especially your first dances) and more importantly, those you don’t want to hear at all. If you are planning on live entertainment, make sure they can perform your first dances or have the availability to play them digitally. P lan the rehearsal dinner. Settle on the guest list and reserve the venue. F inalize invitations and place the order. Some processes can take up to four weeks to print, so give yourself plenty of time to mail.

A planner's perspective By Tenesha Danielle Batiste The current state of the wedding industry is slowly coming back. Many 2020 brides rescheduled their weddings and some rescheduled waiting a year to make sure they still had their special day. I had one couple have a private wedding ceremony on their original date and was able to have their dream wedding a year later. Guests were seated with family members, social distancing was enforced and guests were required to wear masks. We also have sanitation stations, which include sanitizer, masks, and hosts having temperature checks at weddings! One trend that has emerged is that many bridal parties are seated with their families instead of being seated just with the others in the bridal parties. It is important for guests to sit where they are most comfortable. Typically, we have 10 people at a guest table and that has not happened. We have decreased that number to ensure social distancing even at the tables. Tenesha & Company also has a mask vendor that creates specialized wedding masks for brides, grooms, and bridal parties. Some brides really embraced having a Covid conscience wedding while some did not want that at all. I have some brides and parties with beautiful customized masks in wedding pictures and some with no pictures in masks at all. However, all weddings required masks, had sanitization stations, and checked temperatures upon entering.

s an artist, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be able to speak on something I hold dear to me. I love being able to be there for brides and their bridal party on their special day. The trends lately have been soft and elegant. While the day warrants an effortless flair, as a bridal stylist, these soft styles have to last an entire day full of photos. When I add my touch I strive to make it last. I’ve also been daring natural haired brides to embrace their own natural curls, coils, and kinks. I’ve worked with a bride to be earlier this year for styled shoots with her natural hair. Seeing her embrace her beauty with my skills has been so amazing. The smile that comes from her is so genuine when she sees herself in her truest form. That’s the moment I strive for with brides, the genuine happiness on a day to celebrate their love.

TIPS FOR THE BRIDES:

I would say have an open mind when it comes to your chosen style. The starting point will change based on your hair’s thickness, it’s ability to hold curls, length etc. Most styles brides fall in love with have an extra special something that makes the picture look flawless. In reality, hair may have been added or an extra piece for fullness. When that understanding is made, we as stylist and client can come together to make something that’s unique and special for you. Also trusting that a seasoned stylist is trying to help your styles last longer with a tighter curl. Starting with soft curls looks beautiful and elegant for your initial pictures but what about when you get to the reception? Your wispy pieces are now completely straight, your stylist has your back when we give you that bouncy curl hours before your ceremony. A connection and trust goes a long way on your special day!
