Back to School

It’s not just for your children. You can reach your educational goals, too!

Going back to school after many years is daunting for anyone. At Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, specialists like Beth Lovorn, director of Enrollment Services at the Jackson County Campus, are on each campus to help those who need encouragement.

“I would say the most important aspect of our job is to smooth the way for students entering college, so they get all their preliminary paperwork done and have registered for classes,” Lovorn said. “We are always happy to help students with every aspect of their journey at Gulf Coast.”

Stephanie Garziano of Long Beach, who has been out of high school since 2003, entered MGCCC two years ago. She had several hurdles to overcome first, however.

“I decided to attend college after my father’s death in 2019,” she said. “I was shattered after losing him. We had such a strong bond, so it was especially painful to lose him, but that pain turned into a motivational force for me to accomplish things that I knew would make him proud. To reclaim a sense of my own identity and purpose, I knew it was necessary for me to take a huge step and go to college, which meant I first needed to finally earn my GED – something that my dad always encouraged me to do. It was an intimidating first step, but it was time, and after all those years, I was ready for the challenge!”

This fall, Garziano is in her fourth semester at MGCCC and was elected both president of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter on her campus and is the Mississippi/Louisiana Regional president this year as well. She is majoring in communications with a minor in English. She wants to become a published author at some point and hopes to be an entrepreneur in a field that best suits her talents.

“Everyone at MGCCC has been phenomenal with making me feel embraced and accepted as a nontraditional student,” she said. “College can be a trying time for anyone, no matter your age or background, but if you want to grow, you need to be challenged. MGCCC does a fantastic job at providing numerous resources to help with those challenges, from the on-campus learning lab to even providing mental health check-ins.”

Ashleigh Pierce of Pass Christian has four children - she is the mother of two and stepmother to two more. Izabella, 20, lives in West Virginia with her mother, but the other three Branden, 14, Carsen, 13, and Caidence, 10, all live with Pierce and her husband, Walter.

“The sudden death of my brother made me realize I needed to have an education to back up my passion for helping people in their darkest times,” she said. “Once I was able to get a handle on grieving and get back to living a ‘normal’ life, I immediately started the process of enrolling at MGCCC.”

Pierce said she was concerned about being able to handle college at first, but she has overcome the challenges and has grown to love it.

“Being a full-time Honors student and homeschool mom of three, not to mention wife, can certainly be hard to juggle,” she said. “Time management has been my No. 1 struggle, but thankfully my family and college friends have been by my side, especially our PTK officer team. We all strive to support one another with having a healthy work, school, and family balance. Honestly, although it is demanding some sacrifices, I know it is all going to be worth it. Not only will I be able to help provide more for my family, but my children are learning to always work hard and push through whatever challenges or setbacks they may face.”

Pierce is currently working on two associate degrees and hopes to major in psychology and minor in social work. “My focus is addictions and suicide prevention,” she said. “My own personal experience and the loss of my brother are my reasons for choosing this career path. If I can help just one person get better, then my life purpose will be fulfilled.”

When first starting at MGCCC, she decided to try online classes rather than going the traditional route of on-campus classes.

“As a nontraditional student, I didn’t think clubs and things of that nature were something I had access to,” she said. “As I got more involved, the doors just started opening, and I walked through every one I could. MGCCC has changed my life, and I’ve already been places and done things I never thought possible.”

Both Garziano and Pierce agree that college is worth the struggle and overcoming the fear.

“To other nontraditional students who are weighing their options and considering becoming either a brand-new or returning student, I would say don’t hesitate one more minute,” Garziano said. “Doing anything worthwhile will always prove to be challenging, but the sooner you go after it, the sooner you will succeed.”

Huongry for success

Huong Nguyen never thought she would make a living by baking cookies.

The New Orleans native, who has lived in Ocean Springs for six years, started out making and decorating goodies for her friends and family. That hobby grew into her home-based business, Huongry Cookies, which she founded in 2019.

“Growing up, I was very creative in design and art and enjoyed watching my parents cook and bake,” Nguyen recalls. “I love to be in the kitchen cooking and learning new skills. Decorating sugar cookies was only a fun (activity) that I never expected to turn into a career.”

Her business boomed quickly, and Nguyen has found herself booked solid ever since. The talented baker went from making cookies for a Thanksgiving potluck to competing on Food Network’s Christmas Cookie Challenge.

“It was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience,” she says of her TV appearance. Being on the challenge made me realize my work is being appreciated and acknowledged.”

A BAKER AND A LEADER

Nguyen has many other accolades to her name. She holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of New Orleans and has been a community leader in her hometown from the age of 15, when she got involved with the Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans (VAYLA). She’s particularly proud of working with young people in the New Orleans East community on issues including the education system, health system, civic engagement, reproductive justice and quality of life. She also co-founded one of the first Young Women’s Leadership Program in New Orleans when she 17 and initiated the first women’s flag football tournament there — winning the most valuable player award at age 19.

To Nguyen, community means coming together to celebrate milestones and improve the quality of life.

“I enjoyed working with my community members to rebuild our neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina,” she says. “Giving back is important because it creates a sense of community that cares.”

SMALL PERSON, BIG ENERGY

As a business owner and Asian American, Nguyen makes a point of incorporating her culture into everything

she does — including her baking.

“I wanted to make sugar cookies differently, so I tried making cookies with traditional Asian flavors: lychee, pandan, ube, durian and jackfruit,” she says. “And now, the traditional flavors are popular, and it’s what makes my cookies unique.”

Although she spends 12-14 hours per day baking and decorating her creations, Nguyen still finds time to contribute to causes she cares about — and her efforts have earned her numerous awards — including the Service Leader/Youth Ally Change Maker Award from the Gulf South Youth Action Corps, second runner up in the ASPIRE Outstanding Woman of the Year Award and the Youth Service Award from VAYLA and GCW’s 100 Successful Women to Know.

“I am a very small person but filled with lots of energy,” she says. “I am a hard worker and put all my effort into my work.”

Eventually, Nguyen aspires to open her own storefront and offer classes there, in which she would impart her cookie-decorating skills to others. Another goal is to hire young people and give them opportunities to achieve their dreams as she has.

“Continue to do what you love,” Nguyen says, “and your work will reward you in many ways.”

Gaining more than they give

ADOPT A GRANDPARENT DAY VOLUNTEERS SHOW LOVE, CARE TO SENIORS

After five years of participating in Adopt a Grandparent Day, Daisy McCarroll and members of the Biloxi High School Campus Service Council still delight in making seniors smile.

As a sponsor of the club, McCarroll saw how beneficial the pairing could be for both the students and nursing home residents at Brookdale Biloxi.

“We got involved because it's a great opportunity for our students to give back to their community and to gain appreciation and insight for their elders,” says McCarroll, whose husband and son also have joined the effort.

VISIT. CHERISH. CELEBRATE.

Falling annually on the second Saturday of September, Adopt A Grandparent Day mobilizes hundreds of volunteers to visit nursing homes throughout South Mississippi. Kathy Rogers, vice president of Marston Rogers Group, launched the initiative in 2014 with the purpose of honoring, celebrating and cherishing seniors. Rogers was inspired to uplift the elderly population after her mother fell in 2013 and went through 30 days of rehabilitation at a nursing home.

“I remember seeing my mom the next day, and she was crying,” Rogers recalls in a blog on www.adoptagrandparentday. org. “She said she thought we weren’t coming back

That experience is not unique, as studies show that approximately 20 percent of nursing home residents have major depression, and 30 percent have significant depressive symptoms. In 2022 alone, Adopt a Grandparent Day helped lift the spirits of nearly 1,500 area seniors.

Jessica Murray, resident activities coordinator with Brookdale Biloxi, calls the event “an amazing experience” for all involved.

“Residents who normally stay tucked away in their rooms come out and participate; the kids hang encouraging signs all around the dining room and take time from their day to connect with and love on our residents,”

she says. “I have never seen more smiles from them since I’ve been working here.”

MAKING MEMORIES

This year’s event is on Sept. 9, and volunteers will visit approximately 40 facilities in six counties.

McCarroll and the students have formed friendships with residents at Brookdale Biloxi, and they even plan an additional visit at Christmastime. The most rewarding part, she says, is simply listening to the seniors and hearing their life stories.

“One of the most memorable moments was this past year,” McCarroll says. “One of the residents was speaking with one of my club members for some time. When I stopped to check in on them, the resident broke down and said the student reminded her of her son that had passed away.”

For previous visits, band members have brought their instruments to entertain the residents, created a banner and joined in several other activities with the seniors. McCarroll says they plan to play Bingo this time, which brings out the residents’ competitive spirit, in addition to crafts, puzzles and music.

“The feedback from the students was extremely positive,” she adds. “We continue to participate in the event because we gain more than we give.”

EVENT PLANNING 101

What is your WHY?

You find yourself in charge of planning a large-scale event, but you don’t know where to start or what the first steps are. The first and most important question to ask is a simple one: Why?

Whether the event is a wedding, corporate event, fundraiser, gala, social party, business launch, festival, business meeting, store opening or brand launch, knowing what is most important to the host(s) always should be paramount.

Start by asking yourself why you are having this event. What do you hope to achieve? Are you trying to raise awareness for a cause you are passionate about? Are you trying to raise money for charity? Do you want to honor a hero or someone of significance?

By knowing what you hope to accomplish before you start planning, you are setting your event up for success. It also helps your event planner have a clear understanding of how to best develop your overall vision.

Here are my top three tips to get you started!

1. DETERMINE YOUR “WHY”

Take some time to sit and write down your reasons for wanting to host the event. Think about the goals you are hoping to achieve. If it’s a long list, write it all down, then narrow down your list to your top five goals.

2. HIRE A PROFESSIONAL EVENT PLANNER

Events are all about the details. Hiring a professional from the beginning can save you time and energy and ensure

you stay within budget. Experienced event planners know what to expect, making them a tremendous asset. Delivering high-quality events with your event goals front and center is always the number-one priority for a professional planner. To create a truly unforgettable experience, you’ll need to rely on a seasoned professional to get you there.

3. ESTABLISH YOUR BUDGET

Establishing your event budget is one of the most important things you need to do from the start. One of the first steps for every seasoned event planner is to discuss your budget with you and to help determine what things will cost. Without a functional budget, you won’t be able to effectively plan for your event’s expenses, so you could end up spending more than necessary.

While creating an event budget can be stressful, your planner can help you navigate those waters. Their expertise gives them knowledge of where to allocate the right amount of money to create the event you imagine.

Now that you’re armed with this advice, you can confidently take the next steps toward creating a truly successful event. Happy planning!

so fabulous and chic wearing a gorgeous high neck. These gowns show off great jawlines and create an elongated silhouette.

BE BOLD

Layered lace and bold floral appliques give the traditional bride some drama without losing the timelessness of a lace gown. Ballgown, mermaid or sheath, a larger floral lace shows that you may want to keep the tradition of being a bride while having fun with textures.

Above all, pick the gown that highlights the parts of you that you love. Romantic or modern, remember to choose the gown that you feel best in. You don’t need to find the latest and greatest trend to be fashionable on your big day. Let the fabric and design details of the gown, like baseball stitching, cat-eye neckline, align rouching or high side slit, be what inspires the best gown for you.

Try these top floral trends to give your wedding the “wow” factor

Whether you’re going for grand opulence or a sweet, simple vibe, the flowers you choose go a long way toward setting the mood of your event. Here are some of the top trends when it comes to wedding florals.

MONO-FLORAL

BOUQUETS

The solid-white-rose bouquet is making a comeback! Whether they are staggered and loosely arranged for an elongated, elegant look, or rounded into a rich, pavé shape, mono-floral bouquets are one of the hottest trends. They’re a modern twist on a classic, and they pair well with every shape of dress.

SUSTAINABILITY

Local flowers, repurposed centerpieces and donated postwedding florals are all wonderful examples of sustainable wedding practices. Ask your floral designer how you can have a more sustainable wedding and how you can curb waste. In some cases, ceremony pieces can be reused in areas of the reception to create an even richer look. Also, consider asking what you can do with the leftover flowers from your wedding. Couples often opt for the florist to donate them to a nursing home or other worthy cause. Make sure to discuss this option and see how your flowers can bring joy to others after your event.

FREE-FORM FLORALS

Arrangements and centerpieces come in all shapes and sizes. One of the most delicate and elegant looks is the free-form design. This aesthetic can be applied in every area, from the bouquet to the tables. Don’t forget to highlight those smaller tables and spaces with one of these unique designs. They are interesting and beautiful, giving space to each flower’s botanical uniqueness. This style of arrangement invites conversation among your guests and lends a light, airy look to your tablescapes.

Free-form designs are a beautiful touch to any tablescape.

Locally grown flowers, like these from La Terre Farms, are a sustainable option for any event, cutting down on a lot of waste and byproduct.

MARTHA’S TIP: BUDGETING IS KEY

The cost for wedding flowers varies, but the U.S. average is around $1,500, with most couples spending between $700 and $2,500, according to weddingwire.com. Butler stresses that financial planning is paramount when it comes to large events, including florals.

“Many brides are shocked at the costs of certain services, so talk to your vendors openly about your budget and expectations to make sure they match,” she advises. “Allow yourself time to plan and save for your dream event. Explore options with your vendors, and go into meetings prepared with the knowledge of what you would like to prioritize.”

For heavy floral looks, she recommends 15-25 percent of the overall budget, and 10-20 percent for a typical floral setup.

A fairytale wedding worthy of royalty

Maycee & Josh

August 2023 38 love story

Maycee Scardino Eargle had dreamed of her wedding day her whole life, and when she said “I do” on Dec. 2, 2022, the real thing exceeded her every wish.

Riding to the church with her dad in a horse-drawn carriage made the bride feel like royalty. She wore a breathtaking white ballgown fit for a princess. And standing by her side at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church was the man she’d long hoped for.

“He’s everything I’ve wanted and more,” Maycee gushes about her groom, Joshua Eargle. “I’m very blessed to be loved by him.”

MARRY ME

The pair met seven years ago while attending the University of Mississippi. On the day he proposed, Josh planned for Maycee’s sister to take her for a spa day.

They drove into Centennial Plaza, and to Maycee’s surprise, her future husband awaited her there. At the end of a bridge strewn with pink rose petals and lined with candles were large, illuminated letters that read “Marry Me.”

“He even had my engagement ring in a little, pink box with our initials engraved,” Maycee recalls. “Our parents, grandparents and siblings were all hiding behind one of the buildings on the property. It was perfect!” Josh had even arranged a surprise party to celebrate the occasion with their nearest and dearest.

‘A DREAM COME TRUE’

Maycee acknowledges that her family calls her “extra” for a reason, and her wedding was the grand affair she’d always wanted. More than 400 guests attended the nuptials, and the bride incorporated numerous fun elements that made the big day unique, starting with the carriage ride.

“My uncle even dressed in coattails and a top hat to escort us on the carriage,” Maycee says. “Then, when we arrived at the reception, one of my good friends dressed in an all-pink suit and top hat and served champagne to all the guests. He was a fan favorite!”

She credits her beloved late Granna for her love of all things royal, and to create a regal vibe, the reception featured a pink,

British-style telephone booth where guests could leave keepsake voicemails. Maycee comes from a family of dancers, so the newlyweds and their loved ones danced the night away and even threw in some of their own choreographed numbers.

“We ended the night with a firework display before we made our exit,” she says. “It was a dream come true!”

FOCUS ON FAMILY

As a wedding planner for The Wedding Collection, Maycee works with other brides to coordinate their dream days, and Josh is a physical therapist for Mississippi Home Care. Having returned from their Barbados honeymoon, they are settling into married life at home in Pass Christian.

“One thing I love about me and Josh is that we both really value family,” Maycee says. “We both grew up with very loving and close families, so that is something that I know we will continue as we begin our own.”

The couple’s love story is simple, she adds, but continues to grow by the day.

“I love that we’re still learning who we are as a married couple,” Maycee says. “It’s really been the best time with my husband.”

How to create a wedding look for the ages

In today’s world of YouTube and TikTok, it seems everyone has an opinion on makeup and hair trends, so how do you know what’s right for your big day? Here is some helpful advice to point you in the right direction:

• First, take a look around — not at what others are doing, but at the rest of your wedding details: your dress, the colors in your flowers, the time of day, the venue, etc. Those should all play an important part in helping you choose a style or look. When chosen properly, the hair and makeup is the final flourish to your painting. It all works together. You don’t want to focus on pinks, for example, if you are going with rust colors in your bouquet; or a super boho loose braid if you have a very classic dress. Every piece of the puzzle must come together seamlessly to create your perfect look.

• That being said, there are definitely trends you can consider. What we are seeing now is a shift toward natural — an “understated elegance,” if you will. There’s a focus on playing up your best features. Do you have amazing eyes? Let’s emphasize them. Great lips? Perfect! Go for a signature, longwearing shade that complements the rest of your wedding colors, but keep it simple. And while I always recommend lash enhancements for photos, don’t go overboard. Whether you do extensions or falsies, understated is best; otherwise, that’s all you see.

• Hair is subjective, but follow what feels right for you. Don’t like

your hair up? Go for a look that keeps some of your locks down. Have natural curls? Highlight them. That makes for the best updos! No matter what you decide, just make sure it feels comfortable. The last thing you want is to be fussing with your hair throughout the event.

• Do your research on wedding pros. Just because someone has done your hair for 13 years doesn’t mean he or she knows how to handle your big day. Pick a person or team who specializes in weddings. Not only will your look turn out more seamless, but your day will run more smoothly with less stress. Look at reviews from other brides. Those wedding awards? They’re there for a reason.

• Specialists may know their stuff, but communication is key. Schedule a trial so you can tweak your look if necessary. And don’t be afraid to say that you want to change something. If you hire a pro, he or she will want you to feel beautiful — and open and honest communication is how that happens.

A final piece of advice: While something may be on-trend today, these pictures and moments are meant to last a lifetime. You want to be proud of how you looked when you show your grandchildren in 60 years. Above all, your wedding look should simply be the most beautiful version of you.

Capturing the moment

Follow these tips to get incredible photos of your big day

Your wedding photos will endure long after your big day and are one of the most important investments you can make.

Photography is one of the most important investments you can make in your wedding. After the last piece of cake has been consumed and the DJ has played his last song, you will have your memories of your big day, which are captured and immortalized in your wedding photos.

Here’s how to ensure you have amazing snaps that last a lifetime:

1. Make sure your style matches your wedding photographer’s.

If you like those moody wedding photos, hire someone who shoots and edits in that style. If you prefer a more classic approach, find a photographer with a more clean, straightforward style.

2. Pick a professional who can shoot in all lighting situations. While you may be planning an outdoor ceremony and reception, the weather may have other plans. Make sure your

photographer is proficient with flash or other alternate light modifiers for those darker indoor situations.

3. Check that your photographer has backup equipment. Let’s face it; things happen. Cameras fail. Batteries die. Ask your photographer about bringing backup equipment so he or she can keep shooting despite unforeseen circumstances.

4. Talk to your photographer about your timeline before sending invitations.

Communication is key. You can discuss the best light for an outdoor ceremony, or outdoor portraits. Talk to him or her about whether or not you want to do a first look, and come up with a realistic schedule to ensure you have time to get all the pictures you desire.

Above all, enjoy your day — and don’t sweat the small stuff.

The dos and don’ts of event catering

Have a big event coming up? Food is a cornerstone of any big gathering, and one of the elements your guests will remember most. Here are some tips to help you get the menu just right:

DO

1. Start early. The last thing you want to happen is to finally pick your caterer of choice only to learn that vendor is booked. Most catering companies are locked in months in advance.

2. Have a vision. It’s much easier to create the event of your dreams if you bring some ideas to the table for your initial meeting or tasting. Have a theme or cuisine in mind as well. This will make it much easier to plan your final menu.

3. Plan a tasting. Word-of-mouth from friends can go a long way, but until you’ve tasted the food for yourself you won’t have a full picture of what to expect. Most caterers will gladly meet with you for a small fee, which often can be applied to the balance when you book with them.

4. Keep in contact. Make sure your caterer has an accurate guest count in the days leading up to your event. Communicate with him or her about how the venue will be set up as far as kitchen space, food layout, etc. It’s always best to talk through your expectations rather than assume the caterer will simply know.

5. Plan a private moment to eat with your new love. A popular trend in wedding receptions has become setting up a separate room where the couple can enjoy a plate of hot food together before being presented to their guests. This allows the couple to actually enjoy the food that they so lovingly planned for and dreamed of for months without having to greet guests for hours before finally sitting down to a cold plate.

DON’T

1. Skimp on quality. Make sure that the caterer you choose has experience and comes wellrecommended by others.

2. Be afraid to choose items for your menu that represent you. If you’re hosting a wedding, this day is about the two of you, not everyone else. Of course, you will want to include some items that are crowdpleasers, but it is most important that the menu reflect the happy couple.

3. Let price intimidate you. If you find a caterer you really love, but the price seems out of reach, don’t be afraid to ask that vendor to work within your budget. Chances are that caterer can make modifications and work with you to create your dream menu.

4. Forget to ask what is included in the package price. Does it include cutlery, servers, cleanup, etc? You don’t want guests purchasing plastic forks and napkins, or Aunt Fanny staying afterward to clean up.

5. Forget dessert! For weddings, lots of local bakeries offer dessert packages to compliment your cake. Think about sweet options that represent you two. Are you a cheesecake person? Is he a cookie lover? Does she go ga-ga for macarons? Consider going with a bakery that can offer a little something extra to go along with your wedding cake masterpiece.

Have your cake –and eat it, too

Don’t take chances with the sweetest part of your big day

(228)

Planning your wedding can be stressful and time-consuming, not to mention increasingly expensive. You can cut some corners to reduce costs, but the cake should not be one of them. It’s not just a dessert; it’s a design focal point and a reflection of the happy couple.

Take advantage of these tips to ensure your big day stays sweet:

DETERMINE HOW MUCH YOU NEED.

When calculating the number of servings needed for your guests, I generally recommend a two-thirds to a one-third split for the bride and groom, equaling the total number of servings.

For example, with an approximate guest count of 200, the bride’s cake would serve 130, and the groom’s cake would serve 70. If a couple has one cake, enough to cover 75 percent of the guest count is a good rule of thumb.

I have used this method for the entirety of my business, and it has worked out beautifully.

Additionally, I factor in whether the couple intends to save the top tier for their one-year anniversary.

AMATEUR BAKERS SHOULD PROBABLY SIT THIS ONE OUT.

Aunt Karen has baked cakes for your family for every special occasion. She’s excited and wants to gift you a wedding cake, but she has never done a multi-tiered masterpiece of such importance. So, today is not the time for her to start.

When I began my baking journey, I would refuse every wedding cake request. I know how special weddings are, and I didn’t want to be responsible for any upset if I did something wrong, regardless of my increasing skill. Eventually, I started small and have worked my way up, but I strongly

recommend using a reputable baker or bakery for the sweet as part of your day.

We still love Aunt Karen, and we know her intentions were pure, but let her just enjoy the moment with you.

BE MINDFUL OF THE CAKE’S SURROUNDINGS.

For the most part, you can have any cake flavor and design you desire, but make sure you consider the venue and season.

For example, if your wedding is outside in the summertime, your cake(s) should be displayed in an air-conditioned venue or tent. Having your confection melt in the Mississippi heat and humidity would be disastrous — not only for you and your new spouse, but also the baker and florist involved in creating your design. Summertime cakes don’t have to lack design and beauty, but they may require a bit more thought and planning.

DON’T FORGET TO SAVE YOURSELF A SLICE – OR TWO.

You’ve spent a year or more planning, and when the day finally arrives, it has come and gone in the blink of an eye. You wake up the next morning only to realize you didn’t get to eat any of your own cake, and unless you’ve said something to your coordinator or catering service, you may not even have a box wrapped up for the next morning. Let your vendors know you would like a slice of each cake and flavor saved for you and your new spouse to enjoy later; you definitely won’t regret it.

Never would have made it

10 secrets to a long-lasting marriage

elebrating 38 years of marriage takes a lotta love, work, endurance, faith and humility. My husband, James, and I have had our share of hard days and good seasons while raising two children, moving nine times, experiencing two layoffs and forgiving seven-times-70 straws that broke the camel’s back, so to speak.

Advice? Secrets? Yep, but you might not like them.

1. A three-strand cord will hold you together: you, him and God in the middle. See your spouse the way God sees him or her. You know that Marvin Sapp song, “Never Would Have Made It”? It’s #truth.

2. Sit down and be quiet. Who is right is not the most important thing. Be quick to forgive; remember that you vowed “till death do us part.”

Scripture tells us this: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4–8

3. Opposites attract. During the dating and honeymoon phase, yep. Opposites inspire unending frustration after five years. God has such a sense of humor! Who knew he would send us an ever-present file to smooth us out. Thank you, Lord, for seeing our needs and shortcomings and sending an answer to help balance us.

4. Don’t call your “best friend” ugly names. You can’t take them back. Guard your mouth, and guard your heart, too. Hateful words tarnish your heart as well as your spouse’s.

5. Don’t go to sleep angry with each other. You leave room for Satan to maneuver in your marriage. Say, “I’m sorry; I’m upset. Let’s pray and then talk about it tomorrow,” even if you may not be feeling it right then. I’ve discovered that God is so much better at sending conviction that brings humility and change than I ever will be. The one time I shouted, “You can just leave,” he went upstairs, got in bed and fell asleep. I was wondering why it was taking him so long to pack!

6. Be intentional. Be supportive. Be willing to sacrifice. Prefer one another. Love is not selfish. “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”Romans 12:10

7. When you have a “heated discussion,” start this way:

C“When this happened, it made me feel __.” It steers clear of accusation, which usually will produce another accusation in response.

8. Remember that men want respect, and women need love. It’s difficult for him to take correction. She needs to feel secure, covered. Can she trust you? Can he count on you?

9. Choose your battles. Over time, you often can’t even find those rose-colored glasses you wore when you were looking at him or her thinking, “ohhhh wee!” The longer you’re married, the easier it is to pinpoint faults. Ask, “Is this a deal breaker, or is it something I just don’t like?”

10. Remember what made you happy with each other when you first met and dated. Take off on a spontaneous weekend trip. Throw pillows for no reason except that it’s fun. Learn new hobbies together. Surprise each other. Laugh. Laugh. Laugh.

We learned most of this the hard way. You don’t have to. June 15, 1985 — still in love and counting.

Sugaring NYC offers sweet alternative to waxing

Historians trace the practice of hair removal back to ancient Egypt, where it started with simple tweezers and pumice stones before evolving into a sugaring technique that hasn’t changed much over millennia.

The original paste, believed to have been made from a honey mixture known as “mourn,” may even have been used by Cleopatra. The modern iteration of sugaring, which uses just sugar, water and lemon juice, is surging in popularity as an all-natural, less painful alternative to waxing.

The trend has now taken hold locally with the arrival of Sugaring NYC - Gulfport – Mississippi.

“Based on just the few weeks we have been open, we have been wildly welcomed by the Gulf Coast community,” says Rachel Ivy, Sugaring NYC - Mississippi regional manager and Sugaring NYC - Gufport salon manager. “We believe our Gulfport salon, conveniently located on Lorraine Road, will become most popular among the health-conscious population.”

A GENTLER MEANS OF HAIR REMOVAL

The Gulfport salon is the second Sugaring NYC store in Mississippi, with the other located in Southaven. The franchise started in 2014 with Daria and Dmytri Afanaseva, who came to New York from Europe and found no healthy hair-removal options that worked for Daria’s sensitive skin. They opened their own salon, and today, there are more than 100 Sugaring NYC locations throughout the U.S. Ivy came to work for the owners of Sugaring NYC in Gulfport, she recalls, via “a landslide of perfect events.” Growing up in a family of self-employed cosmetologists, she

spent her whole life being involved in the salon business and earned her certifications at a young age.

“I was drawn to (Sugaring NYC’s) commitment to a community of people who care about taking care of themselves and who are looking for a natural approach to their hair-removal grooming routines,” Ivy says. “My standards … lined up with the owners of Sugaring NYC –Gulfport, who chose this franchise based on the quality of the products and the exceptional support they provide.”

Client Brie Lybrand Garza, owner of owner of Say Yes Weddings and Events, says the Sugaring NYC team went above and beyond to talk her through the process and answer her questions. The experience, she adds, “was like gabbing with a girlfriend.”

“The atmosphere was highly professional and fun; it was an atmosphere that you would expect from the show ‘Cheers’ rather than what you would anticipate from a typical waxing,” Garza says. “I really enjoyed the friendly, warm and welcoming atmosphere.”

NOT DONE GROWING

Sugaring offers an all-natural, less painful alternative to waxing.

The local store’s service menu includes body sugaring, facial sugaring, eyebrow lamination and eyelash lift and tinting. Patrons also

can buy memberships, gift cards and the Sugaring NYC product line of after care items, like exfoliation scrubs, ingrown hair removal products and sugar paste.

The most recent addition to these offerings, Ivy explains, is wedding packages.

“This is a time in a bride’s life where she wants to look her best and feel like a queen,” she adds. “The brides will enjoy the option of two different bride packages, along with a bridal party package.” The salon also is partnering with local wedding and event planners, venues and others to offer a pampering time for wedding parties.

Although the franchise now has a foothold on the Coast, it is by no means done growing. The owners of Sugaring NYC - Gulfport –Mississippi have exclusive rights to the franchise along the northern Gulf Coast, and Ivy says a new salon is planned in Ocean Springs by the end of the year.

“We’ve created a beautiful business,” Ivy says. “We are all very proud to commit ourselves to the success of our highly professional estheticians, our adorable employees, our clients’ satisfaction and making a professional contribution to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”

BIG DAY COMING UP?

Plan ahead for beautiful skin

Do you have special occasion or event marked on the calendar? Make sure you are feeling your best by committing to a skincare plan now. Start by scheduling a consultation with a licensed aesthetician to discuss skin care issues and goals. See a board-certified dermatologist for any issues that may require medication or surgical treatment.

If you plan to have any aesthetic procedures ahead of your special day, here’s a helpful timeline for booking those appointments.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL: 6 MONTHS OUT

Laser hair removal is a safe, effective way to remove unwanted hair on your chin, upper lip, underarm, bikini line or elsewhere. Highly concentrated light rays destroy hair follicles at the root and prevent or greatly reduce regrowth. Laser hair removal typically takes several treatments for the best results, which is why you will want to start treatment early.

COOLSCULPTING: 5 MONTHS OUT

CoolSculpting eliminates stubborn body fat safely and effectively without surgery or downtime. This fat-reduction treatment is the only procedure the Food and Drug Administration has cleared that uses controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate diet- and exercise-resistant fat. CoolSculpting results are proven, noticeable and lasting. In the weeks and months following your procedure, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good.

CHEMICAL PEEL (SERIES): 4 MONTHS OUT

Chemical peels exfoliate the skin and help reduce fine lines, improve the appearance of scars, diminish dark marks and enhance your skin’s texture. Be warned that they can

cause your face to physically peel, for weeks afterward, depending on the strength of the peel and how your skin reacts. A series of three peels, scheduled one month apart and ending 30 days before the event, is recommended for best results.

COSMETIC INJECTABLES AND DERMAL FILLERS: 3 MONTHS

OUT

Dermal fillers and injectables like Botox and Dysport offer big, and often immediate, results, restoring volume and fullness, correcting moderate to severe wrinkles, and reversing the signs of aging, that are significantly less expensive than surgical options. Best of all, they can help you attain a more youthful appearance with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

CUSTOM BLEND FACIAL: 2 MONTHS OUT

Making time for yourself before the big day is important. A facial treatment, while relaxing, can also target specific needs, improve skin health and enhance your appearance, leaving your skin feeling clear, bright and revitalized.

DERMAPLANE: 1 MONTH OUT

Dermaplaning is a facial exfoliation treatment that carries the added benefit of removing fine vellus hairs, often referred to as “peach fuzz.” A straight-edged blade is used to gently remove the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing brighter, smoother skin underneath. Dermaplaning helps your skin receive product better and allows makeup to go on more smoothly for the perfect photo finish.

Spilling her secret

Shaina Barnett is the owner and microblading artist at Southern Brow Boutique LLC. As the owner of a rural salon in Gulfport, she helps women of all ages amplify their natural beauty and confidence by enhancing their eyebrows with microblading. Here are some of the favorite products she swears by.

‘GREAT FOR COVERING UP GRAYS’

I love Batiste Dark Hair Colored Dry Shampoo! It is great for covering up grays or thin spots on the scalp while also removing oils in the hair. It has an awesome fragrance, too.

MICELLAR WATER THAT’S WORTH THE INVESTMENT

Not all micellar waters are created equal. Trust me. I have tried off brands, trying to save a few dollars, and ended up throwing money down the drain. Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water is worth the investment. Tip: It’s great for removing press-on eyelash glue; just add a little to a Q-tip and rub on your lash line.

‘MY GO-TO MAKEUP REMOVER’

Neutrogena Makeup

Removing Wipes are my go-to makeup remover, especially if I’m traveling and don’t want to worry about spills or airline regulations for liquids. I prefer the unscented wipes.

SUN PROTECTION FOR FANS OF TANS

I know two types of people: sunscreen fanatics or “I’m trying to get a tan.” Why not both? Australian Gold Instant Bronzer is light and airy, has a very pleasant smell and does not leave you feeling oily. It contains a touch of bronzer and has a low SPF to provide protection while you’re working on your tan.

MOISTURIZER THAN ENHANCES YOUR SKIN’S GLOW

NatureWell Super Beauty Cream is my current daily moisturizer, and it’s worth noting that the pump is very convenient. This cream enhances skin’s glow, firms skin, provides intense moisture and leaves skin smooth. It goes on very light, and the fragrance is very subtle. The only thing it’s lacking is SPF.

Purple shampoo is for brunettes, too. Everyone knows they make purple shampoo for blondes, but did you know they have one for brunettes? I recently discovered this and have been using John Frieda Brillian Brunette Shampoo and Conditioner to keep my color from fading.

BEST BRAND FOR HOME MANICURES

I always seem to smudge my nails when I try to do them at home. Instadri Nail Polish takes two coats and dries quickly, preventing smudges. My daughter loves painting her nails, and this is the only brand that lasts on her tiny nails.

ANOTHER GREAT MOISTURIZER OPTION

I noticed a huge improvement in my skin when I started using No7 Lift & Luminate Daycream/Sunscreen. The best part is the 30 SPF that protects your skin all day.

BLENDABLE,

Why wait to wear fall colors?

Some of summer’s hottest shades are darker, nature-inspired tones

Have you noticed new colors popping up this season that are traditionally associated with fall? I’m seeing olive green, burnt orange, black and rustic gold everywhere. I suspect the nature trend inspired this shift, and these hues work this time of year because you can wear them with summer colors like white.

Another plus: Won’t it be easy to transition to fall with these pieces already in our closets? Here’s how to make the most of cooler, darker shades this summer:

• Wear a modern silhouette like a maxi dress with an ikat print in the newest shades of the season.

Liverpool tiered dress in allover ikat print, Lee Tracy Boutique, Ocean Springs, $139

• Let your footwear carry the earth-tones trend as well.

Sloane shoe in brown by Patrizia, J. Laurie Boutique, Ocean Springs, $89

• I love a belt on a dress; it enhances the waistline. Metallic studded stretch belt, www.whitehouseblackmarket.com, $55

Let your glam side shine this summer with shimmery accessories.

Adhara Jackie Mack earrings, jackiemackdesigns.com,

Pearl and gold stretch bracelets were my pick for this colorful dress. Wear them around your ankle as anklets.

Three pack gold and stretch bracelets, www. chicos.com, $50

It wouldn’t be summertime without pool days and finding the cutest swimsuit to show off your figure. This season’s swimwear is forging a whole new path. It’s funny how trends work. For instance, I remember when bikinis were the most popular swimsuit style. As we’ve shifted to flatter more bodies, which come in all shapes and sizes, I love the diversity we’re seeing in swimwear.

Here are a few trends at the top of my list:

1. A ONE PIECE WITH STYLE

One-piece swimsuits are usually my go to. I love how they make me feel slim without showing too much. Now, one-pieces have so much personality that you want to wear them all the time. For example, this one piece from Summer of Spivey caught my eye. Not only is it a simple silhouette, but it comes with adjustable shoulder ties. It’s also reversible, and you can remove and place the frilly tie any way you want.

2. POWER COLORS

We all want to stand out this summer. The only way to do it is

with a bold color that screams, “I’m here.” Popular colors I’m seeing are summer orange (it’s bright), greens, blues, and even a mixture of colors placed together for maximum impact — like this cute option from Target.

3. HIGH CUT AND HIGH WAISTED

Whether you love the coverage of a one-piece or the sizzle of a bikini, this is a trend that can do both. It’s a great choice whatever your swimwear preferences. Especially If you are a high-rise fan who doesn’t mind a little cheek action, you will love this fit from Nasty Gal.

4. CHIC COVERUPS

Now that you’ve found the perfect swimsuit, you need a cute cover up. The trendiest options can be very sheer, or you can make a statement with a maxi kimono like this one from Free People. This kimono allows you to wear it on or off the beach. It’s easy to wear and will complement any color suit you choose.

Want healthy nails?

Follow these tips from Sidney and John Tran of Diamond Nail Co.

1. USE CUTICLE OIL

Nails need a skincare routine, too. No matter what nail service you opt for, cuticle oil will enhance a natural nail’s flexibility and resilience. Well-hydrated nails are less likely to become brittle, break or split. It also improves the appearance of cuticles and prevents hangnails. Oil every day before bed and massage into your cuticles for maximum effectiveness.

To simplify your nail-care routine, consider trying cuticle oil pens. You can help save the environment while nurturing your cuticles!

2. DO NOT PICK AT NAIL ENHANCEMENTS

Improperly removing nail enhancements will damage your natural nail. Always return to the salon for proper maintenance or removal as needed. When you pick off nail enhancements, you are removing layers of the nail as well.

3. YOUR NAILS ARE JEWELS, NOT TOOLS

Avoid using your nails to open boxes, scrape off labels or pry objects open. Using your nails as tools will cause nail products to lift and chip and likely will damage natural nails if they are not maintained. Nails are an awesome way to express yourself, but their ultimate function is to protect our fingertips to facilitate dexterity. By taking care to ensure that you are not causing undue trauma to your nails, you will enjoy long lasting nail enhancements and strong natural nails.

‘We’ll do it together’

few weeks ago, my sons and I attended the summer reading program at the Orange Grove Public Library. We stumbled upon the event when we went to exchange our books for new ones. Upon entering the front doors, we noticed a sign-in table and a man dressed as an astronaut in one of the side rooms.

“Can we check out what’s going on in there, Mommy?” my youngest son asked. Always game for something to do on long summer days, I agreed, and we entered the room filled with about 20 kids, aged about 5-12.

The kids were all seated on the floor in the center of the room, listening to the librarian talk about two of the summer reading books while the adults occupied chairs placed around the edges of the room. I found a chair in the second row and smiled encouragingly at my eldest son, who looked back at me with nervous uncertainty.

“I’LL GO WITH YOU”

After a few minutes, we learned that the day’s activity involved groups creating obstacle courses for the librarian’s robot, Oggie. Group work, with complete strangers? My stomach clenched, and my mouth went dry.

“Glad this is for the kids and not me,” I thought. No sooner had I finished that thought than my youngest son came to me in tears followed by my eldest son, his face a mirror of my own apprehension and nervousness.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. My son’s little voice quivered as he said, “I’m scared.” My heart melted, and I immediately searched for a way to ease the discomfort.

“Do you want to go?” I replied. The librarians had started organizing groups, and I felt confident we could sneak out without being rude. “

“I want to do it,” my youngest said, “but I’m scared.”

His honesty and vulnerability killed all the platitudes and cliches before they could cross my lips. He had simply articulated my own feelings. How could I tell him to “be brave” or “put yourself out there” while harboring my own doubts, misgivings and fears? I sat for a moment in indecision, and then I realized the path forward.

“I’ll go with you,” I said. “We’ll do it together.”

PROUD MOMENTS, MEANINGFUL MEMORIES

So often as parents, we expect our kids to overcome the very fears and anxieties we harbor ourselves while offering them the very encouragement that we need to hear and accept. My fear and anxiety in those moments were the same as my sons’. I feared looking foolish and being rejected, just as they did. And while our kids must learn to overcome those fears on their own, we provide their

Afirst lessons for doing so — through our words, but more through our actions.

I joined my son’s group, introduced myself to the other mom who had volunteered to help facilitate (one of three extremely courageous women in that room), and offered help to the kids around me. While my oldest son declined to join us at first, after a few minutes, he came over and helped construct one of our main course obstacles. My youngest son was chosen to drive the robot through the obstacle course, and the pride on his face reflected the pride I felt in my heart.

Both of my boys overcame their fears and created meaningful memories. As a parent, I could feel no greater accomplishment than that which came from showing them how.

clever interior design hacks to kick off the new school year 8

As students return to class, it’s a good idea for families to prepare their homes for a smooth transition from summer to the academic season. With the help of some clever hacks, you can create an organized environment that’s conducive to your children’s learning and wellbeing. Let’s explore some practical ways you can optimize your home ahead of the upcoming school year:

1. HAVE A DEDICATED STUDY ZONE

Create an area where your children can focus on their schoolwork without distractions. Choose a quiet corner or room and equip it with a comfortable desk, chair and proper lighting. Personalize the space with inspiring artwork or motivational quotes to encourage productivity.

August 2023 76

2. ORGANIZE SUPPLIES

To avoid last-minute searches for school supplies, designate storage zones for backpacks, books, stationery and other essentials. Consider using wallmounted shelves, storage bins or cubbies to keep items organized and easily accessible.

3. CREATE A COMMAND CENTER

Set up a centralized command center to keep track of important dates, schedules and reminders. Use a large whiteboard or chalkboard to display the family calendar, school timetables, extracurricular activities and upcoming events. This will help everyone stay organized and ensure no tasks or appointments are overlooked.

5. DESIGNATE HOMEWORK TIME

Establish a consistent homework routine to instill discipline and focus. Designate specific time slots during the day for homework and encourage your children to adhere to the schedule. This will help them develop good study habits and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

6.

ENHANCE LIGHTING

Ensure that your study area has ample natural light. A light, bright room promotes better concentration and reduces eye strain. Supplement natural light with task lighting, such as desk lamps, to provide adequate illumination for reading and writing.

7.

INSPIRE CREATIVITY

4.

INCORPORATE FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE

Invest in furniture that serves multiple purposes to maximize space efficiency. Opt for desks with built-in storage compartments or bookshelves with integrated study nooks. Foldable tables or desks can be a great option for smaller rooms, as they can be easily tucked away when not in use.

Include elements that inspire imagination in your children’s study space. Add a bulletin board or a magnetic wall to display their artwork and achievements. Incorporate vibrant colors, comfortable seating and a small library to foster a love of learning.

8. INCORPORATE ERGONOMIC SOLUTIONS

Prioritize ergonomic furniture and accessories to support your children’s growth and development. Choose adjustable chairs and desks that can adapt to their changing height. Ensure that computer screens are at eye level and that students have proper back support to prevent discomfort and strain.

Remember, a well-designed home can help boost your children’s academic performance and overall happiness. Embrace these ideas and make the most of the upcoming school year!

Caregivers, know your rights

Many are aware of workplace protections that mothers and fathers receive. Did you know that caregivers also should have some of those same safeguards? Family caregivers should be protected against negative actions (harassment, dismissal or demotion, failure to promote, and refusal to hire a caregiver) from employers, too.

Nearly 12 percent of the U.S. population — roughly 40 million people — are unpaid caregivers like me to aging adults or adults with disabilities. According to the National Council on Aging and the National Alliance for Caregiving, these caregivers are typically women approaching age 50, like myself, who have teenage children or grandchildren and maintain a job along with other responsibilities while caring for an aging adult.

These women usually care for a relative or spouse for five to 11 years and provide more than 20 hours per week of unpaid labor looking after their loved one. One in six full-time employees are also caregivers, yet not all those in the workplace are understanding or compassionate about the caregiving journey and sometimes engage in discrimination.

Working full time and being a caregiver is challenging. In fact, it’s hard as hell. Even when a schedule is well planned and help is secured, it is still difficult, as the caregiver must manage the schedule, helpers, finances, shopping, etc. And, of course, there is the employment that keeps the lights on — getting your job done, managing your time and staff and fielding concerns and allegations about your work and your caregiving. This can add undue stress to an already taxing and arduous journey.

Prioritizing self-care, communicating with supervisors and staff, keeping an updated calendar, etc. can make it all more manageable. However, what is hard to manage, or even anticipate, is the family caregiving discrimination in the workplace.

WHAT IS FMLA?

The Family Medical Leave Act can offer caregivers employment protections. Not every business must provide FMLA, and not every employee will qualify. For those who are eligible, it provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave annually to care for a seriously ill or injured family member, deliver and bond with a new baby, tend to military family needs and

heal from a serious illness or injury without losing your job or medical insurance. The definition of family member includes children under 18 years old (or children with a disability who can’t care for themselves), spouses and parents. FMLA also can be taken on an intermittent basis and used over 12 weeks as needed for medical appointments or to tend to your covered loved one. To accomplish this, a request should be made to the employer, who will provide paperwork that should be completed by the loved one’s doctor. The primary physician may be the best person to complete the paperwork rather than the specialty doctor because he or she should be able to provide a holistic assessment of the patient.

Using FMLA is a great option for working caregivers. However, 12 weeks annually may not be enough to effectively care for a loved one who requires close attention for five to 11 years (the typical length of a caregiving journey). FMLA also does not protect spouses like mine who are on this journey too; my husband sometimes takes my parents to their medical appointments or cares for them when I am traveling. Neither does it offer protections for those who care for members of their extended family like grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc.

The protections aren’t perfect, but they can give the caregiver some comfort. Additionally, legislation at the federal and state level is under consideration to protect caregivers from discrimination. This will prove critical, as more and more of us are predicted to live longer and require more caregiving.

10 GARDENING TASKS FOR YOUR AUGUST TO-DO LIST

It’s the height of summer, and especially given the extreme heat, your plants need some extra attention. Here are some gardening tasks you’ll want to take care of this month:

1. We have enjoyed blooms in our gardens for weeks, and some annuals are showing signs of slacking off due to the heat, depletion of nutrients in the surrounding soil and setting seed. Now is the time to deadhead or cut off spent flowers to keep them blooming a while longer.

2. Cutting back lanky stems on annuals such as impatiens or salvia by one-third or one-half will encourage them to keep blooming until frost. Fertilize with a good time-release fertilizer and water in.

3. We’ve had lots of rain along the Coast, but plants need adequate moisture to withstand our hot summers. Any week you don’t receive an inch of rain, gardens must be watered. Containers may need to be watered daily to survive the summer sun.

4. Monitor mulch, as it tends to decompose faster in hot conditions. A minimum of 2-3 inches is required to provide adequate moisture retention and block out weeds. Mulch should be 2-3 inches away from trunks of shrubs and trees.

5. Check for diseased plants and leaf litter. These should be removed, bagged and disposed of in the garbage. Adding to your compost pile will ensure you’ll have the same issues next season.

6. Disbud camellias by onethird to increase the size of next season’s flowers.

7. Take cuttings of woody ornamentals and plant in good potting soil. Keep moist by placing a plastic bag over the top of each pot. When roots

form, remove the plastic cover; plant next spring. Azaleas, oleander, hydrangeas, camellias and gardenias are good ones to propagate.

8. Start planning for springblooming plants. Shade trees that lose their leaves in winter are prime candidates to have early spring bulbs and other ornamentals planted beneath their limbs.

9. If you plan to start new flower beds, now is the time to take a soil sample. It’s easy, and you’ll have confidence that your new bed will thrive. Mississippi State University Extension Offices located in each county can provide information on this important process.

10. Although the coastal area is very hot and humid in August, now is the time to plant your fall vegetable garden. Below are some general facts for fall planting.

• Make sure your garden area gets full sun (six-plus hours a day.)

• Completely remove any dead plants, including roots.

• Till in a good quality and quantity of composted soil amendments.

• Check new plants twice weekly to stay ahead of pests and diseases that have had months to develop and multiply.

• Be sure to have a water source nearby to provide adequate moisture when needed.

WONDERING HOW MUCH DOWN PAYMENT IS NEEDED ON A HOME PURCHASE?

When you get ready to purchase, you'll definitely need to have some cash on hand.

Not only will you need money for your down payment, but most buyers pay upfront expenses that may include an appraisal fee, earnest money to put down when you make an offer on your home, the cost of an inspection, and prepaid home expenses, like taxes and insurance.

In most cases, you'll want to allow for 2% to 5% of your purchase price for these types of expenditures. This number varies greatly, though.

Your down payment amount will depend on what you're comfortable paying and the loan program you choose. Minimum requirements typically range from no money down to 5%.

In most cases, when you purchase with a low down payment, you will be required to purchase private mortgage insurance (PMI). The cost is typically added to your monthly mortgage payment. You'll be able to stop paying it after you gain more equity in your home, often through an appraisal process or by refinancing your home.

Falling in love with Long Beach

Lifelong Californians find affordable oasis near the water

HGTV buffs and fans of the renovation series, “Hometown,” Patricia and John Simmons, had been considering a move for a while. The closure of Patricia’s workplace of almost 30 years presented the family a golden opportunity.

They put their home in Redland, California, up for sale while researching the best places to retire. The goal was to find an affordable home where they could live by the beach and take their time deciding their future.

“Mississippi was a popular destination on YouTube and had a lower-than-average cost of living,” Patricia says. “We also appreciate that they don’t tax our Social Security benefits.”

The couple had never dreamed of living a mile from the beach, considering the prices on the West Coast. John works in real estate and finance, so home values were crucial to him.

“We never thought we could live in a brand-new home this close to the beach for what we paid,” he says. “It reminded us of the West Coast 40 years ago when we were kids.”

A PLACE TO BELONG

On their first visit, the Simmons’ Realtor brought them to view homes in Ocean Springs. After touring several houses and

seeing how much further their dollars would go, they focused on new construction homes. Their Realtor then introduced the couple to Frankie Doyle, a new home specialist.

“We wanted a town with an excellent school system to protect our property values, and there are several great locations along the Coast,” Patricia says. “Frankie brought us to Long Beach.”

John was well-versed in real estate and knew the value of investing in a home in a good school district. “Quality schools make a district an undeniable magnet for buyers, helping maintain or improve resale value,” he says. “They are usually a tight-knit community that potential residents find appealing. Beyond the economic advantages, the sense of togetherness makes a neighborhood not just a place to live, but a place to belong — driving up the desirability and ultimately boosting the value of your investment.”

The couple fell in love with the Long Beach community and the incredible home values. However, it was a change from Redland, and they were unsure of the more laid-back lifestyle the Coast afforded. This all changed after a visit to a local bakery. The owners also were originally from California and shared how much they loved the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

“They reminded us (that) if you get bored with the more relaxed lifestyle and things to do on the Coast, New Orleans and Mobile are close by, as is the airport,” Patricia says.

PLENTIFUL CUISINE, LOWER COST OF LIVING

John adds that they then realized their home was in the perfect position to use as their home base when traveling, and the house’s affordability offered more opportunities to do so. Even utilities are much more affordable here, according to John.

“In California, if we ran the air conditioner all day and night, our electric bill would be between $1,500 to $1,800 monthly,” he says. “Even the water used to keep up the lawn would run around $200$300 monthly.”

The family hosts friends and family with local attractions and visits to New Orleans and Fairhope.

“We love all the people at the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival and have friends looking to move here now, too,” Patricia says.

The couple are selfproclaimed foodies and love the diversity of cuisine the Coast offers. When family and friends visit, Patricia and John enjoy taking them to their favorite spots for dinner.

“There are so many types of cuisine that we recommend,” Patricia says. “You never get bored with places to dine!”

The pair had to adjust to their new home’s open-concept layout after coming from a midcentury modern ranch. Patricia has grown to love plants and incorporates them throughout her home.

“I used to have a 26-mile commute that would take me an hour and a half to get home,” she says. “The stress level here is much different, and I enjoy plants and local nurseries.” The couple also enjoys spending more time together indoors and out, and they have created a gorgeous outdoor oasis to take advantage of the beautiful weather.

HIGHER EDUCATION – what the trends tell us

You don’t need a Ph.D. to notice that the landscape of higher education is shifting.

• Students have learned there’s more than one path to a degree, and they increasingly are taking the online route. As of fall 2020, approximately 14 million college students, about 74 percent — were enrolled in at least one distance education course, and 46 percent of college students were enrolled exclusively in online courses, according to bestcolleges.com.

• The composition of the student body is changing and no longer dominated by young people fresh out of high school. According to U.S. News & World Report, 37 percent of college students are 25 or older, while 24 percent have children or other dependents. More and more nontraditional students are returning to school as adults to grow their skillsets and make themselves more marketable in an increasingly competitive workforce.

• Finally, but significantly, the future of higher education is looking very female. As of spring 2021, women comprised a record-high 59.5 percent of all U.S. college students, according to Georgetown University.

So what is the takeaway from these trends? For those enrolling in college, and for the schools themselves, there’s plenty of challenges ahead, but an even greater amount of opportunity.

DERMATOLOGY SPECIALISTS OF MISSISSIPPI OFFERS ADVANCED TREATMENTS, AQUA MEDICAL SPA

Whether patients’ skin concerns are large or small, Dermatology Specialists of Mississippi strives to stand apart with a skilled, professional team and advanced technologies — offering everything from cosmetic procedures to specialized surgery.

The Biloxi-based clinic is a full-service, physician-owned dermatology practice and part of the Dermatology Solutions Group, which includes about 20 other locations throughout Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The Biloxi location is the only clinic in the Magnolia State, and it also offers Aqua Medical Spa, which provides personalized anti-aging treatment plans.

The Aqua Medical Spa programs are designed to help restore, rejuvenate, enhance and protect natural beauty while patients are under the care of a physician-supervised team of aestheticians. Dr. Dawn Hansen says skin care treatments at the clinic also include non-invasive skin rejuvenation and the management of acne, eczema and psoriasis, as well as the treatment of many other diseases and conditions.

“Over the years, I have also developed a passion for educating others on the importance of annual skin screenings for the early detection of skin cancer and how we can all protect our skin from the damaging rays of the sun,” Hansen says. “I am deeply committed to providing the highest level of skin care to patients of all ages here in Biloxi and to making sure my patients always leave with answers to their questions.”

The clinic also offers cosmetic and general dermatology, radiation therapy, and Mohs micrographic surgery. Mohs micrographic surgery is a skin cancer procedure, and

another physician with the practice, Dr. Lisa Chastant, was among the first dermatologists in the nation to be double certified in both dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery.

BE SUN SAFE

During a Gulf Coast summer, the sun’s unforgiving ultraviolet rays can be especially brutal on skin and cause premature aging, as well as skin cancer, Dr. Peter Barnes encourages sun safety and reminds everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the beaches, outdoor events and open-air activities.

“Consistent sun protection, including wearing hats, seeking shade and using sunscreen, is the most important thing you can do for both skin cancer prevention and to avoid premature aging from sun damage, such as wrinkles and age spots,” Barnes says, adding that sunscreen should be at least SPF 30 and block both UVA and UVB rays.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. The good news is that skin cancer is among the most preventable cancers.

“The harmful effects from ultraviolet rays are felt even on cloudy days and through car windows, so it’s best to make a habit of wearing daily sunscreen that is a broad spectrum,” Barnes says.

A GUIDE TO NUTRITIOUS LUNCHES FOR KIDS

Time is of the essence when it comes to raising kids, but there never seems to be enough. If you aim to provide nutritious, healthy lunches your family will love, Memorial Health System Culinary Medicine and Family Medicine Specialist Dr. Kerry Scott is here to help.

Dr. Scott is a certified culinary medicine specialist (CCMS) with a deep knowledge of nutrition and culinary techniques to prepare food that is consistent with real-world budgets and time constraints. He is board certified in family medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment.

Here are some of his recommendations:

LIMIT SNACKING

According to Scott, “It is important to incorporate as many healthy food options into children’s meal plans as possible. Many children are picky eaters and enjoy snacks more than balanced meals. Processed snack items have been manufactured to taste good and marketed to appeal to children. Since these snacks have been processed, they are made with added sugars and salt to appeal to the taste buds. Added sugars can lead to weight gain and obesity, especially in children who are not physically active. High salt intake can lead to early hypertension in children.”

Some examples of unhealthy snacks that should be avoided include:

• Packed fruit snacks/gummies

• Soda

• Fruit juice/boxed juices

• Sugary cereals

• Pop Tarts

• Packaged lunch box meals

• Flavored yogurt

• Energy bars and drinks

• Hot dogs

• Fast food

• Frozen chicken nuggets/dinners

• Boxed macaroni and cheese

• Chips

• Candy

SIMPLE VS. COMPLEX SUGARS

A major health concern for children is obesity.

“The obesity rate for young children continues to increase each year, and these children are at risk of developing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease and early degenerative joint disease,” Scott says. “Not all sugar is bad, but sugar in excess is dangerous.”

He adds, “Simple sugars are naturally occurring sugars found in fruits, vegetables and honey, and added sugars (can be found) in candy, jams, jellies, etc. These sugars can cause spikes in blood sugar levels when eaten, increasing the risk over time to the development of insulin resistance

and diabetes.”

Limit simple sugars when possible, and opt for complex sugars instead. Beans, whole grains, oats, popcorn and starchy vegetables include complex sugars. The sugars in these foods break down slowly and do not cause unwanted spikes in blood sugar levels.

BRAIN-BOOSTING FOODS

The food we eat can improve health in many ways. Some foods even help with brain function and concentration, which is vital to success in school.

“Some healthy foods that may help boost brain function and concentration include fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), blueberries, broccoli, dark chocolate, eggs, and nuts,” Scott says. By prioritizing nutritious choices, avoiding sugary snacks and incorporating brain-boosting foods, you'll be fostering your family's wellbeing and setting them up for success. JOHN FOSTER GETS BACK ON HIS FEET WITH HELP FROM ENCOMPASS HEALTH

As soon as he fell, John Foster knew his hip was broken.

The 72-year-old father of two and grandfather of five tripped at his Carriere, Mississippi, home in January, which landed him in the emergency room.

“Two days later, I had the surgery, and the hospital therapy began the following day or two,” Foster recalls. “I was encouraged to consider a rehab facility to help me gain the strength for walking and doing things that I had done prior to the break.”

He arrived at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, a partner of Memorial Hospital of Gulfport, a week after surgery. The facility is committed to helping patients regain their independence after a life-changing illness or injury.

At the start of his nearly three weeks at Encompass, Foster practiced standing up and sitting down using a wheelchair and a walker. He also participated in morning therapy sessions, when a few people got together to talk, and he gradually regained strength through weightlifting sessions.

“I enjoyed my therapy with Jeremy; he is an awesome physical therapist,” Foster says. “He always encouraged me to take as many steps as I could without pushing me beyond my limit.”

Each day, Foster was encouraged to do more than the day before. As part of his rehabilitation, he practiced his return to real-life scenarios, including entering a car, walking on inclines, peddling a bike and more.

“When you break a bone, it sets you back and it makes you feel like you are learning to walk all over again,” Foster says. “My family came to visit me at the hospital and the rehab facility, and they will continue to help me gain strength and encourage me to get back to doing the things I love.”

As for Encompass, he adds, “I would give them a five-star rating.”

“The professionalism and knowledge of the staff and caretakers was amazing; they knew what to do to help you out as you needed,” Foster raves. “The facility was very clean, and I was amazed at all of the equipment that they had in the physical therapy room.”

Foster has continued to progress at home, where he does exercises to gain strength and walks longer distances each day. Encompass provided him with items he will need as he recovers, including a wheelchair, walker, shoehorn, long-handled sponges and other necessities.

“Just things like taking a shower, you have to now make accommodations to do,” he says. “It is a change, but I am hoping to get beyond all of this and back to my normal activity with minimal changes.”

With its specialized programs, interdisciplinary team approach and advanced technology, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital helps patients like Foster achieve their goals. To learn more, visit www. encompasshealth.com/gulfportrehab or call (228) 822-6965.

VAGINAL HEALTH WOMEN HAVE MORE OPTIONS THAN EVER

For many years, a patient had to see a doctor and get a prescription whenever she experienced a shift in her vaginal pH that caused symptoms. Today, numerous alternatives have emerged claiming to help maintain vaginal health.

WHAT CAUSES A YEAST INFECTION?

So what really causes bacterial vaginosis, or yeast infections? Typically the vaginal pH is less than neutral, meaning it is acidic. This normal environment is maintained by the vaginal microbiome, a combination of many bacteria, dominated by lactobacillus acidophilus, and a small number of yeast. A shift in the pH that causes it to be more acidic, like when lactobacilli are killed by antibiotics, will result in an overgrowth of yeast, or a yeast infection. If the vaginal pH becomes more alkaline, that may result in bacterial vaginosis. The composition of bacteria in everyone’s vagina is slightly different, and this may cause bacterial vaginosis to be more symptomatic in some.

THE RISE OF ALTERNATIVES

For years, alternatives to traditional antibiotics and antifungals to treat these conditions were sought. Compounding pharmacies made boric acid suppositories to adjust the pH closer to its normal, or sometimes even capsules of lactobacilli used as suppositories to restore their population in the vagina. These were not always widely available, as they were

MELATONIN, GOOD SLEEP CAN LOWER CANCER RISK

alternatives to traditional therapies.

Recently, numerous alternatives have cropped up. For instance, RepHresh is a gel product available over the counter that can be used to immediately adjust pH. Boric acid suppositories are also now widely available. Don’t let the acid in the name fool you. The vagina is slightly acidic, and these mildly acidic compounds are useful for adjusting the pH to alleviate irritation or discharge.

Most interesting is the emergence of oral supplements for vaginal health. Vaginal probiotics are taken by mouth and have been shown in some studies to result in repopulation of the lactobacilli in the vagina.

Many physicians and patients were skeptical at first. The mechanism for oral intake of bacteria to survive the gut was not well understood. Theoretically, the organisms migrate from the colon into the vagina, as do some other bacteria that can cause infections. This is an encouraging advancement, as many people do not find vaginal treatments comfortable or convenient.

Talk to your doctor now or when you have symptoms about the availability of these supplements and which ones may be most effective in your situation. Recurrent bacterial vaginosis, or persistent yeast infections, may respond to these supplements instead of requiring repeated rounds of antibiotics.

The pineal gland in our brain produces melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate our circadian rhythm. It peaks at nighttime and is inhibited by the light of day. With darkness comes increasing levels of melatonin, bringing on lethargy, calm and sleep.

Studies have shown connections between the disruption of the circadian rhythm and increased risk of several types of cancer. Nightshift work, in particular, has been associated with increased risk of breast, endometrial, prostate and colorectal carcinoma. One study found that patients with shorter sleep durations had increased risk of colon polyps, the precursor to colon cancer. This study suggested that just a modest increase in sleep duration could have a substantial impact on the incidence of colorectal cancer.

THE POWER OF MELATONIN

In addition to facilitating sleep, melatonin enhances our immune system, decreases proliferation of cancer cells through a variety of mechanisms, prevents the spread of cancer cells and promotes cancer cell death.

Melatonin is not only produced in our brain, but in our retina and skin as well. The melatonin produced from the pineal gland is triggered by darkness, while the melatonin produced in our retina and skin is triggered by sun exposure, particularly near infrared light (NIR), which is greatest at dawn. Daytime melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that seeks out and destroys free radicals, byproducts of our metabolism, that can damage cells and ultimately lead to cancer. As little as 30 seconds of early morning sun on your retina can give you a flood of this protective daytime melatonin.

We spend approximately one-third of our life sleeping, and for good reason; good sleep is critical to good health overall, to include decreasing our risk of cancer. If you are not getting good sleep or feeling refreshed when you wake in the morning, discuss this issue with your health care provider.

TIRED OF BEING TIRED? TIME FOR AN ENERGY AUDIT

Energy, like money, has a flow; it comes in, and it goes out. There should be a nice balance so you are neither bouncing off the walls nor ensconced in bed for days. When the flow is off, however, and your energy coming in is less than what’s going out, that’s a deficit, and fatigue is the outcome.

TEMPORARY TIREDNESS VS. CONSTANT FATIGUE

Sometimes, it's temporary. Maybe you stayed out too late over the weekend having fun with friends or at your kid’s game. Perhaps you're going through something stressful and intense, like starting a new job, moving, ending a relationship or grieving the loss of a loved one. You find you’re not taking care of yourself, eating the right foods or getting enough sleep, and for a short time, you feel run down and tired. You may even become sick. We know that if we shut down for a while and tend to our needs with a little self-love, we will bounce back.

But what happens when you can't bounce back, and the fatigue is not temporary? What happens when your energy flow feels like it’s all just pouring out into a massive pit and leaving you so depleted that you can’t get through your day without a nap, multiple cups of coffee or loads of sugar? Those of us in “giving” positions, including moms, teachers, nurses and caregivers, tend to experience this reverse flow of energy more often than others, but no one is immune.

WHAT’S DRAINING YOU?

If you’re finding yourself constantly fatigued, practice noticing. Pay attention to when you feel your lowest and your best. Noticing how your body, mind and heart feel before, during or after situations is an important part of determining where your energy is going. How do you feel after attending an event? How do you feel immediately and even hours after you eat something, don't eat something, forget to drink water, sit for hours or say yes when you want to say no? Does just the thought of talking to a particular person trigger anxiety? These are potential energy drains that need further examination.

Many of our clues lie in observation. For the next week, practice noticing, maybe even jotting down notes, writing in a journal or sharing with a trusted friend. You might be surprised at what you discover. To find out where your energy may be going, take the free energy quiz at TheHopeBuilder.com.

How Teresa Youngblood started her business

In today’s fast-paced world, clutter is a common problem that plagues individuals and families alike. The accumulation of possessions can lead to stress, disorganization and a sense of overwhelm. I recognized the need for order and simplicity in my own life, so I embarked on a journey that ultimately led me to start a cleaning and decluttering business.

THE CHAOS:

As a child, I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff in my own living space. I grew up with two brothers, who never picked up after themselves. The clutter was suffocating, both physically and mentally. I would clean up, and the messes would quickly reappear.

As this cycle repeated, I started creating spaces for them to drop their things and organized the house to fit everyone’s habits. I realized my process was working, and the house was much neater. Witnessing the positive impact this change had on my own life ignited a desire to share this newfound clarity with others. It changed how I viewed spaces as I grew older. I could walk into a room and organize it in my head.

THE PASSION:

I discovered a deep-rooted passion for helping others find their own sense of calm amid the chaos. I recognized that many people struggled with clutter and disorganization, often lacking the time, energy or expertise to tackle the problem effectively. Understanding clutter’s detrimental effects on mental and emotional wellbeing, I felt compelled to make a difference. I began creating serene spaces for my friends and family for free. After years of hearing that I should charge for my services, I finally decided to turn my passion into a business.

The business: Getting started was simple and easy. I have a business degree and know all the components of forming a business entity and all the necessary steps to ensure my venture was set up properly. I also started off with a contract to assist a new business in setting up its office space and organizing its operating processes. I also had

a one-year contract to help a retail business organize and categorize inventory. The money was flowing, and life was good. I was living my dream.

I rode the success wave for a full year before the bottom fell out. All my business background and training did not prepare me for the slow times. After my contracts ended, I found myself with only a few small projects that were few and far between and did not pay the bills. It took me on a downward spiral, where I started second guessing my decision to try entrepreneurship. I did not have the security of a regular paycheck, and I began to imagine all the worst-case scenarios. That took my mind far from why I started the business in the first place.

One day, I decided I needed to either take charge or get a job. I didn’t want to get a job because that would mean that I failed after just getting started, so I decided to do something. A friend told me about a workshop for small business owners, and I decided to attend.

The first topic was “What is your WHY?” It was an indepth look at why I started my business and how to create a plan for sustainability and growth. The speakers and

Instructors taught me how to go easy on myself and talked about the pitfalls and how to pull myself out. This was just what I needed and surely a divine intervention. That workshop motivated me to turn my business around and showed me how to build the life I wanted.

THE CLARITY:

Starting a decluttering business has been a fulfilling and purpose-driven endeavor. By leveraging my experiences, passion for helping others and commitment to sustainability, I strive to create harmonious spaces that promote wellbeing and tranquility. Whether it’s decluttering a single room or revamping an entire home, my goal is to provide tailored solutions that empower individuals to embrace simplicity, find clarity and embark on a journey toward a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

WHAT’S YOUR BUSINESS’S MONEY STORY?

At some point in or before high school, arithmetic becomes associated with complexity. That experience often transforms into the narrative, “I’m not good at math.” The seed of that thought takes root, and even in adulthood, many people retain a disconnect between themselves and the numbers that represent their budgets, reveal their profit margins and guide their business planning.

Money is needed to buy goods and services, build dreams and fund retirements. Most business owners want the money to make sense, which means checks in the mail and paid-in-full invoices, but they don’t know the what the flow of money is telling them. Managing business is more than monetizing your talent. It is understanding what the money is saying because money tells a story.

Here are two tips to help you learn your business’ money story:

CALCULATE YOUR EXPENSES

Once the business’s vision is written, it is time to calculate the expenses. Everything has a cost, from the pens labeled with your company name to website hosting and product inventory. It can seem tedious to write out the cost of every needed supply, service or piece of equipment, but knowing how much it takes to start the business will inform how much it will take to sustain it and how much time is required to make

it profitable. Allow the numbers to reveal the financial cost of your venture so you know whether you need to save before you launch or apply for a loan. By the way, lenders like seeing numbers.

HAVE A PLAN BEFORE YOU PAY

There are products on the market that can be great for business, but anything that goes unused is not a worthy investment. Prior to paying for a product, write a plan for how you intend to use the tool.

In the beginning, it is common to subscribe to services or make purchases that we think will be the key to our operations. Unfortunately, purchasing is only the first step. Products must be used consistently to have an impact. Periodically evaluate if the product meets your business needs. If it doesn’t, let it go.

The more you understand about the finances of your business, the stronger it can become. Your money is telling a story. What is it saying?

Brandon’s Place

Here, we speak with Cynthia Butler, CEO/founder of Brandon’s Place, and Ashley Ogans, the nonprofit’s program director. Brandon’s Place, based in Gulfport, supports young adults who are aging out of foster care. Learn more and find ways to get involved at https://www. brandonsplacems.com.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OR MISSION OF BRANDON’S PLACE?

Our mission is to bridge the gap, through resources, education, necessary services and support, for those between the ages of 18-25 who are aging out of the foster care system along the Gulf Coast and need further support both personally and professionally as they transition into adulthood.

Participants will enter the program by completing an intake assessment that encompasses goals and needs, as well as case management to encourage progress and accountability. Our main goal at Brandon’s Place is to reduce the circumstantial risk factors through this program by providing free access to resources, life skills training and transitional process assistance.

HOW AND WHY DID BRANDON’S PLACE COME ABOUT? TELL US

A BIT ABOUT ITS HISTORY.

Brandon’s Place has been a passion in the making for over 20 years and was established a year ago. After being a foster parent for 20 years and having a deep passion to help young adults, Cynthia wanted to create an environment to help foster youth thrive in our community after aging out of the system. She wanted the young adults to know they have support and a place they can come and seek assistance and resources when they have little to no support.

WHAT’S NEW AND EXCITING WITH YOUR ORGANIZATION?

In May, we hosted our first annual Foster Care Awareness Festival and Gala Fundraiser, raising over $3,000 through silent auctions and donations from the community to assist young adults aging out of foster

care. We had amazing guest speakers who shared their empowering stories of overcoming trauma and not being a statistic of foster care by being resilient and not allowing the past to shape their future.

Coming up, Brandon’s Place will be seeking to collaborate and donate backpacks for back to school for youth in need in our community.

WHAT IMPACT DOES BRANDON’S PLACE MAKE ON THE COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE IT SERVES? WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT INITIATIVES?

Our organization impacts the community by ensuring our young adults can be a positive influence in the community after foster care and able to navigate life successfully — preventing them from suffering through addiction, homelessness, suicide, mental health issues or sex trafficking.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THING YOU HAVE LEARNED OR GAINED THROUGH BRANDON’S PLACE?

We have learned that a lot of young adults need support and guidance, after leaving foster care, and without the support of the community and programs like Brandon’s Place, they are at risk of falling through the cracks.
