ow that spring has officially arrived (hopefully for good), it’s great to spend time outside digging, weeding and planting. It’s time to clean up winter’s remnants and prepare for a new growing season. In life, too, there is always opportunity for new growth, no matter what the season. My focus and schedule have shifted and therefore I feel it is important to find a new publisher for Guided Synergy Magazine. When journalist Jennifer Worley interviewed me for the Fall 2012 feature story, I told her what I had been looking for in a career back in 2009: “It had to be flexible, I had to earn real money, I wanted to use my creative side and it needed to be something I could be passionate about.” I have accomplished everything I set out to do and so much more. I have learned about myself and grown as a person and an entrepreneur. I am truly grateful for the experience. Now it’s time for a fresh set of eyes. Who will be the next publisher of Guided Synergy? Maybe you or someone you know is ready to try something new! I would like to recognize a few people who have been a significant part of my journey. The first to join my team, editor Susan Fitzgerald of Vancouver, British Columbia, began in the fall of 2009, just weeks before the Winter 2010 issue hit the stands. She created our editorial style and makes sure we get the facts right. She offers her opinion

whenever needed and has been a trusted advisor from the beginning. I couldn’t have done it without Susan and want to personally thank her for her contribution. It’s hard to believe it’s been seven years. Graphic designer Nancy Seiz of Calgary, Alberta, also joined that year. She brought new life to the pages of the magazine, and many of the elements she created are still used today. Wendy Comeau of Grande Prairie, Alberta, came aboard in the summer of 2014 and is still thinking outside the box today— graphically speaking! Her work ethic, eye for detail and bubbly personality shine through in everything she does, and I have truly enjoyed working with her. Chelsey Boyne of Grande Prairie, Alberta, came highly recommended by client and friend Candace McKim. Hired in the spring of 2011, she earned her stripes many times over and eventually became the associate editor. Although she is no longer with the magazine, to this day I am grateful for her hard work and contributions. My memories of working with Chelsey still make me smile or chuckle out loud. My sister-in-law Samina Malik Smith has been our web editor for five years. She’s also been the woman behind the scenes on our Facebook page for the past couple of years. Wow, time flies when you’re having fun! I have worked with many fantastic photographers over the years, and their role is significant. A picture truly is worth a thousand words. In this issue, Tanya Sedore of Grande Prairie, Alberta, is our shooter. Her talents and expertise are unbeatable. Finally, we could not have produced this magazine without the many contributors who have shared their wisdom and

knowledge with us, or without the support of our advertisers. A heartfelt thank you to all of you, and to the many others who have helped us along the way! I like to see the pages of each issue in full layout before I put pen to paper for my publisher’s message. As I review each page one last time before we head off to press, I can honestly say that I am a fan. I think you will agree that this issue has been worth the wait! Our feature, “The Power of Love,” is truly a testament to the healing power of love. Cordel Lovlin talks about how events in his life have given him an opportunity for growth. His strength and perseverance are inspiring and offer hope to others facing their own challenges. “Things can always be better—but they can always be worse, too,” he says. Health Is Wealth Why workplace wellness matters I t’s estimated that in our lifetime we’ll spend about 90,000 hours at work. For some of us, that adds up to about 50 percent of our waking hours. It’s no wonder that workplace wellness is a hot topic—work is a huge part of our lives.

A recent national survey conducted by the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) and Leger revealed that 67 percent of Canadians agree that their work causes them stress. A staggering 59 percent say their health is negatively impacted by stress experienced at work, and 63 percent feel the stress they experience at work negatively impacts other areas of their life. As a holistic nutritionist and a working mom, I understand that managing workloads and at-home duties can be a fine balance. In an effort to reverse this trend and help Canadians manage their hectic schedules, CHFA has developed the Natural Guide to Workplace Wellness, designed to help Canadians keep up their energy throughout the day and meet their everyday demands, both inside and outside of the workplace. The guide focuses on the following five pillars. Punch up productivity with natural health products. Natural health products are an easy and portable way to improve productivity in the workplace. Omega-3s contain the essential long chain fatty acids EPA and DHA, which have been shown to improve both learning and memory, while vitamin D is important for so many body processes and has been linked to improved mood and increased problem-solving abilities. Do more than namaste the stress away. Recent research has pointed to a few natural solutions that can help Canadians stay calm on the job. Probiotic supplements help boost brain health by reducing anxiety and stress, and magnesium can help us remain calm in stressful situations. Fruits

and vegetables rich in vitamin B6, like avocados, baked potatoes and bananas, have been shown to help ease psychological stress since B6 is used to make serotonin, a brain chemical that calms and relaxes. Go beyond “deskercise.” Research continually shows the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle, and desk jobs have many Canadians sitting for hours at a time. Deskercise—using one’s own body weight or performing sitting exercises to encourage movement throughout the workday— is the new workplace-wellness phenomenon. But don’t stop there. Take advantage of the warmer weather and take your meeting outside—a walking meeting will get you moving, and fresh air always seems to provide a new perspective. Another simple change I’ve made is replacing my conventional office chair with an exercise ball. Sitting on an exercise ball forces you to engage your core and can help with posture. Practice mindfulness at work. Mindfulness, a top health trend this year, has been shown to help increase general awareness while decreasing stress levels. It can also be practiced in the workplace to combat overall stress. I set an alarm on my computer that reminds me to take three deep breaths every other hour. I also like to start and end each workday thinking of three things I’m grateful for; this helps me to set the pace for my workday and my commute home.

Carbohydrates get a bad rap, but complex carbs like beans and legumes are actually high in fibre, which slows and stabilizes glucose absorption and reduces the risk of blood sugar spikes followed by crashes. Some studies even show that when stressprone individuals are subjected to stress, they fare better eating a high-carbohydrate diet rather than a high-protein diet. Eating more complex carbs can increase serotonin, reduce stress hormones, improve mental performance and enhance mood. Work may be busy, but it shouldn’t be stressful. Our conversations are full of stories about the effects of technology, electromagnetic fields, smart meters, GMOs, medications, sitting indoors, depression and addictions. We are starting to pay more attention to our health as news of devastating disease becomes commonplace. Young people are eager to avoid the health traps of aging. And there are many options for dealing with these dilemmas.

How do we know what is really good for us? And how can we feel well without having to add a myriad of new things to our already crazy-busy to-do lists? What will give us the biggest bang for our buck? Many of us have become so busy trying to make ends meet or focusing on what we think will make us happy that we put our health in the background until it hollers for attention. We ignore the symptoms of dis-ease, masking them with medications until we can’t ignore them any longer. Is it possible to change this cycle? Can we do so with simplicity and ease? Himalayan sea salt has been receiving much attention lately. As it’s being used in more and more foods, word is spreading through mainstream marketing. But we’ve all heard that cutting back on salt is part of the solution to heart disease, which is rampant. Why would we add salt back into our bodies? Salt is actually crucial to our health. It is the key to opening cells; without it we cannot absorb the water we drink.

First let’s look at ions. Positive ions are light and capable of floating, carrying with them allergens, bacteria and even some molds. Love Is in Your Blood!

Blood's role in natural healing N

ow that I have your attention, let’s talk about what’s in our blood and how it can be used to help repair certain tissues inside and out. Blood is the essence of life, because without it there is no life. It delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the tissues and organs, and it transports waste away from the organs so it can be properly eliminated from the body.

60 millilitres, we can separate the blood’s components by spinning it in a special centrifuge and create a plasma sample that has a particularly high concentration of platelets with a minimal number of red blood cells. This is known as platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. This PRP solution can be safely injected in various areas of the body to stimulate tissue repair. Soon after the injection, the platelets are activated and release the growth factors, which signal stem cells to migrate to the injection area. The stem cells then proliferate and differentiate into healthy cells specific to that part of the body.

Blood is composed of particles and cells suspended in a fluid called plasma. The cells are mainly white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. In this article I focus on platelets. The main function of platelets is clotting blood, but they also play a large role in repairing and regenerating tissue. They are a natural source of growth factors. One, called platelet-derived growth factor, is a powerful agent that chemically attracts other cells to its location. Another, called transforming growth factor beta, stimulates the deposition of molecules that provide structural and biochemical support to the surrounding cells.

PRP was developed in the 1970s and first used in 1987 in an open-heart surgery procedure. Since the 1990s, doctors have been using PRP for a variety of applications, such as chronic tendon injuries like tennis elbow and frozen shoulder; acute ligament and muscle injuries such as partially torn knee ligaments; osteoarthritis; and healing after musculoskeletal surgery. For these treatments, the PRP is injected inside the joint or on the tendons or ligaments at the injury site. In many cases, PRP injections can be so effective that joint replacement surgery can be postponed or even avoided.

So why is this so important and fascinating? From a simple blood draw of about 30 to

In my practice I have been using PRP in the treatment of many different musculoskeletal problems and for facial rejuvenation with great results. That we can use our own blood components to help repair and regenerate our tissue never ceases to amaze me. To me, this is the ultimate example of the healing force of nature and how our bodies are capable of self-love! O

ften, when there are struggles in a relationship, we spend a lot of time talking about what is wrong or what we are upset about. There may be blame, criticism and judgment, which usually result in arguments, and if the negative talk continues, things may spiral out of control. Firing criticism back and forth does no more to change things than countries bombing each other saying they are “fighting for peace.” In fact, a lot of damage is done, which may be remembered for years down the road, continuing to affect the relationship between the two participants. It is much better for couples if they can focus on what they want to create rather than on what is wrong. Of course, they may have to refer to what is upsetting, but the focus should then quickly switch to what it is that could make things better. When there are ongoing issues and conflict within a couple, they often stop listening to one another and no longer feel like being kind or loving. It is like when a plant is struggling to survive and then water, light and nutrition are withdrawn. It does not stand a chance.

All couples have issues at some time or another, so it is important to have some agreements about how difficulties will be discussed. A good beginning is to affirm caring for the other and positive intent in dealing with the problem. Couples should agree to avoid blame, criticism, judgment and put-downs. It is important to try to focus on the issue at hand without bringing in too much of the past. Do not compare your partner to others. Telling her she is just like her mother levels two criticisms with one blow. Asking why he cannot be like your friend’s husband is devastating: He will always think that you are comparing him to “Mr. Perfect” and that he will never measure up. Relationship issues can be delicate, and past hurts can get in the way of present solutions, so be careful what you say. ommunication is so much more than the words being said. True communication is a very complex process, and it is a wonder sometimes that we even understand one another at all. First, let us look at the one doing the speaking. The speaker may not be saying exactly what he or she would like to say, or may not be expressing it all that well. Then consider the listener. The listener may or may not be paying full attention to what is being said. Even if really listening, he or she may misinterpret what is actually being said. The message may be filtered through the listener’s assumptions about what is being heard. Listening is truly an art. Caring enough to listen deeply is a gift. Often, when someone is really listening they will encourage us to say more on the topic. They will ask questions for clarification. We will feel that what we have to say is important. They will not be in a rush to change the subject. A sensitive listener will not jump in with solutions or advice, nor will he or she take the conversational ball and run off with it. We will not feel judged or criticized for what we are feeling. Deep listening is a very active process; it takes work and consciousness. It requires both the head and the heart. It is one of the greatest gifts we can give to another. S

ometimes life as we know it can change in an instant. For Cordel Lovlin and his family, that day was September 23, 2012. Cordel remembers it with crystal clarity: the day, he says, his life changed forever—for the better.

Cordel, born in 1982 in the northern Alberta community of Manning, spent most of his growing-up years in Grande Prairie, with his parents, Wally and Leslie; his younger sister, Miria; and his younger brother, Braiden. Like many teens, he partied in junior and senior high school. He even had a cat named Smirnoff. “Boozin’ was cool,” he says. Cordel began working on the cement crew of his dad’s company when he was just 13 years old. He takes great pride in the many sidewalks he helped build in the City of Grande Prairie, and he is filled with gratitude when he sees the concrete holding up to this day. In concrete work and in life, Cordel suggests, “a good foundation is very important.” On that early fall day in 2012, Cordel, Braiden and a few friends were enjoying a quad ride just a few minutes south of Grande Prairie, near the Canfor road. It was late afternoon. They were about to load up their quads and head back home. Cordel remembers throwing his helmet in the back of his brother’s Razor. He recalls, “I was angry. Some personal stuff was happening, and I wasn’t dealing with it very well. My buddy was ahead of me on the trail, blowing donuts, and I blew through a cloud of dust and we had a head-on.” “I remember flying through the air,” he continues. “I was thinking, ‘This is going to hurt.’ I think the reason I didn’t break my neck was because I tucked and rolled. I remember standing up and holding my eye in my dirty, muddy gloves and thinking, ‘What am I going to do with this now?’” Cordel’s father, not far away when he got the call, arrived at the scene within minutes. Despite the severity of his son’s injuries, Wally remained optimistic as the ambulance sped to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie. From there, Cordel was immediately transferred to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. Leslie, in California on business, could not get a flight home until early the next morning. During the night, as she lay in a dreamlike state, Cordel came to her. She recounts, “He was sitting on the chair beside the bed and he said, ‘I don’t know what I am going to do yet, Mom.’”

She replied, “Whatever you decide, I will support you.” When she woke to prepare for her flight, she says, he was still there. He spoke to her once again, saying, “Okay, Mom, I’ve decided to stay.” And so began the journey of healing. Cordel’s skull had separated from his spine, a condition called atlanto-occipital dislocation. He had sustained a severe brain injury, and part of his skull had to be removed to allow room for his brain to swell. It was stored in a freezer until it could be reattached five months later. Doctors induced a coma to allow Cordel’s body to heal from the trauma; he remained in the coma for three weeks. Wally, Leslie and the extended family were a constant presence. Auntie Jackie and Uncle Gabe live not far from the University of Alberta Hospital. Their love and support were fundamental and allowed the family to navigate the daily stresses of the situation. Cousins sent videos so that Cordel could hear familiar voices. Leslie says, “We didn’t think about the how, the tomorrow. We just surrounded Cordel and supported him on his healing journey.” Over several weeks, doctors tried a variety of treatments, but Cordel was not responding. Attempts to wake him from the coma failed. Wally remembers one doctor telling him there was no hope. Another told Leslie, “We’re sorry, he’s not coming out of this. You probably should just go home.” She replied, “I’m not leaving without him, so don’t tell me to go home ever again unless he is coming with me.” Finally, doctors removed all life support. Unwilling to give up, the family remained optimistic that Cordel had a chance at survival. Reaction from hospital staff was mixed. One nurse said, “He’s not responding. What window do you want us to park him in?” But in the same twenty-four-hour period, a different nurse shared the Lovlin family’s optimism. He showed the family how to use pressure on the cuticles of Cordel’s fingers and toes to look for signs of brain activity. His words—“Don’t give up”—proved to be life saving. And then one day, Cordel’s eyes opened slightly into little slits, and those around him began communicating with him through his eyes. On October 31, 2012, Cordel was transported back to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie, to the palliative care unit. But he was not a typical palliative care patient and the environment was not ideal for his healing, so he was moved to the intensive care unit.

feature story Leslie, a trained Ayurvedic specialist (featured in the Spring/ Summer 2011 issue of Guided Synergy), knew the benefits of natural healing methods like massage, aromatherapy and juicing. To help provide the nutrition his body needed to heal, Cordel was given the juice through his feeding tube. The hospital staff was very supportive, and Cordel showed signs of improvement every day.

The entire family was involved in Cordel’s care. Even Smirnoff came to visit. The community and extended family also pitched in. In March 2013, cousin Sherri Young and family friend Jodie Drysdale organized a fundraiser to help the family with the expenses they had incurred on Cordel’s road to recovery. Television personality Jillian Harris, who was born and raised in the northern Alberta community of Peace River and is the daughter of Wally’s cousin, became involved in raising awareness about quad safety and brain injuries. In a June 2013 interview with Jocelyn Turner of the Daily Herald Tribune, Harris talked about the importance of wearing a helmet when quadding. “I think sometimes we think we’re invincible and we’re really not,” she said. Leslie says, “We were so blessed to have such amazing support from family, friends and the community. They were our soft place to fall when we needed it.” It has been a long journey. Cordel spent five weeks in the ICU at the University of Alberta and three months at Queen Elizabeth II. This was followed by six months at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton and six months at Halvor Jonson Centre for Brain Injury Inpatient Rehabilitation in Ponoka. And the healing continues today. He has had to relearn how to swallow, eat, talk and walk. It hasn’t been easy but, as Cordel says, “struggle breeds greatness.” When I ask Leslie how the family coped through the many months of her son’s recovery, she tells me, “We took everything day by day instead of thinking of all the what-ifs. It was a great lesson in not worrying so much about the future. Many around us thought we were in denial, but about ninety percent of the what-ifs did not happen.” As we sip detox tea from Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar, a mentor and family friend, I ask Cordel to elaborate on his state of being today. “Things can always be better—but they can always be worse, too,” he says. He still has issues with balance. He has a blood clot in his arm caused by a PIC line and a tube in the back of his head that drains into his stomach. His speech is improving, he got his driver’s licence back after three years and he is now working towards integrating himself back into the workforce. “The biggest change has been within me,” he says. Now he is most grateful for his memories—the good and the bad. He feels his experience has truly been a blessing in disguise. He says that the accident “knocked out the bad stuff” and gave him a new outlook. Above all, he has learned how to give and receive love. “If you look into someone’s eyes, you can see what they’re saying,” he says. “Open your heart to others and they will open their hearts to you. Just wave and smile—you might make someone’s day.” Life is quite different for the 33-year-old today. With a grin and a chuckle, Cordel describes his new routine: “No cigarettes, no booze, no coffee, no red meat and no sugar! And,” he says as he grabs his cell phone to show me a picture of his new ride, “I’m going green.” It’s a classy green low-rider bicycle with three wheels. Riding it releases endorphins, which assist with his healing and happiness. Cordel remembers the words that came to him as he lay in a hospital bed: “Look for the peaceful spot in the eye of the hurricane. If you can’t find it, be it.” He has learned that the body has an incredible ability to heal and that spirit, the will to live and love are powerful healing tools.

Healthy Recipes Power-Packed Protein Bars

These bars are simple, delicious and packed full of high-quality, plantbased protein. A great substitute for packaged granola bars, they’re the perfect snack when you’re running short on time. Feel free to mix things up a little! Switch out the walnuts for pecans or the blueberries for goji berries. Throw in ¼ cup of hemp or chia seeds; just make sure to remove ¼ cup of something else, like the oatmeal. Yields 24 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped 3 cups gluten-free oats ½ cup dried blueberries (or cranberries or goji berries) 2½ cups rice crisp cereal (such as Nature’s Path) ½ cup pumpkin seeds 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon sea salt (or a tiny bit less) ½ cup roasted almond butter or peanut butter 1 cup brown rice syrup 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Line a 10-by-16-inch cookie sheet with two pieces of parchment paper, one in each direction. Spread the walnuts in an even layer on another rimmed baking sheet and toast them in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes, until lightly golden and fragrant. Set aside to cool.

In a large bowl, combine the oats, dried blueberries, rice crisp cereal, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon and salt. Stir in the cooled toasted walnuts. In a small saucepan, stir together the almond butter and brown rice syrup until well combined. Cook over medium to high heat until the mixture softens and bubbles slightly; then remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour the almond butter mixture over the oat mixture, using a spatula to scrape every last bit out of the saucepan. Stir well until the oats and cereal are coated. The mixture will be thick and a little difficult to stir. Transfer the mixture to the prepared cookie sheet, spreading it in an even layer. Lightly wet your hands and press down on the mixture to even it out. Use a pastry roller to compact the mixture firmly and evenly. This helps the bars hold together better. Press down on the edges with your fingers to even it out further. Place the pan in the freezer, uncovered, and chill for 10 minutes or until firm. Using the parchment paper as handles, lift the oat square off the pan and place it on a cutting board. With a pizza roller or serrated knife, slice evenly into bars. Wrap the bars individually in plastic wrap or foil and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to a month. Healthy Recipes Quick and Easy Chicken Soup Seared Scallops with Jalapeño Look no further for an easy, chemical- and preservative-free chicken soup. Vinaigrette This recipe is perfect for a quick dinner on a busy day. Or make it ahead to take to work or send to school with your children for a healthy lunch. Serves 6 4 to 6 cups of organic chicken broth (instructions for homemade broth follow) 1 cup of chopped carrots bay leaf ½ teaspoon onion powder salt and pepper to taste handful of gluten-free spaghetti noodles (such as Giovanni) Pour broth in pot; add chopped carrots, bay leaf, onion powder and salt and pepper. Bring to a boil for 4 to 5 minutes. Break up the spaghetti noodles and add to the broth. I cook the noodles for about 5 minutes, because I send this soup to school and they soften up in the containers. If you are eating at home, cook the noodles according to the package instructions (approximately 8 minutes). Remove bay leaf before serving.

HOMEMADE CHICKEN BROTH

Whenever you have roast chicken, gently boil the bones for about 2 hours with the following: carrots, onions, celery, bay leaf, dill, thyme, sage and rosemary. Let the broth cool; strain out the bones, vegetables and herbs with a mesh strainer.

Serve scallops in an easy-to-prepare, versatile dressing. If you reduce the amount of oil to 1/3 cup, the dressing can also be used for salads. Serves 4 1 large jalapeño pepper, seeded and membranes removed ¼ cup rice vinegar ¼ cup olive oil ¼ teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 12 large fresh sea scallops 1 pinch sea salt 1 pinch cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 oranges, peeled and cut in between sections as segments Place jalapeño, rice vinegar, olive oil and Dijon mustard in a blender. Purée on high until mixture is completely liquefied, 1 to 2 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Season scallops with sea salt and cayenne pepper. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over high heat. Place scallops in skillet and cook until browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Garnish scallops with orange segments and drizzle jalapeño vinaigrette over the top. Recipe submitted by ChefJohn. Pour the broth into freezer containers, glass Mason jars or a large covered pot. Store in the fridge or freezer. When it’s time to make the soup, defrost (if frozen) and skim off the fat. From the Mouths of Babes

Seeing what is in front of us I love to watch the gazes of babies. They seem to stare off into space and take great delight in whatever they are seeing that I cannot. They giggle at the curtains and their eyes light up at the grass as if they are having the most fascinating conversations with angels or great-grandparents already passed. Smiling at the sky, laughing at the trees, waving at the wall, delighting in invisible company with their parents unaware. I have envied the babies and their secret world. What are they seeing? What magical, mystical, delightful world are they a part of that I am not? I wanted in on the joke. On the secret. I wished for my eyes to sparkle and to share a laugh with an otherworldly companion. I lay on my back in the grass for savasana after a two-hour yoga practice in the park. The summer breeze rustled the leaves on

the sprawling branches of the tall trees as I gazed at clouds sailing above. I have cloudgazed often, enjoying how they morph from one shape into another. I have photographed storm clouds and sunsets; wispy, feather-like clouds; and enormous, dense, sun-illumined clouds. As I lay observing the sea of wave-like clouds floating quickly by, I was taken by the thought that this is what babies delight in. Perhaps they aren’t seeking the company of familiar angels or ancestors but rather they are joyful in their reunion with all things earth. Taken with the blue of the sky and the mystical movements of clouds. Ebullient with the music of the songbirds. Happy to rediscover the magical sensation of water as they splash and play together. Giggling at a joke carried on the breeze. Intrigued by the colours and rich textures surrounding them

and ecstatic in the fullness of the sensory experience of life. For a brief moment I knew that which I had envied. I delighted in all that surrounded me. Fulfilled by my place as participant and observer within this vibrant world. And I was grateful for the insight that there is nothing to seek that isn’t already right in front of me, and that it is from within me that I recognize and enjoy this magic all around. Babies already understand this gift of life. Or perhaps it’s just gas. I’ll never know, but I’ll continue to muse. Stephanie Hrehirchuk specializes in women’s health.
