Is Lyme Disease a Ticking Time Bomb? How to protect yourself W

hat is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks. Each year, ticks are heavily distributed across Canada and the United States by migratory birds. In 2013, 20 percent of the blacklegged ticks collected in Alberta tested positive for the Lyme disease bacteria, called Borrelia burgdorferi. What further complicates the picture is that ticks can transmit many other pathogens, so someone can be infected with more than just Lyme disease by a single tick. These co-infections lead to more complicated and more severe illness. In order for a person to contract Lyme disease and any co-infection, a tick must remain attached to the skin for as little as eight to twenty-four hours.

"The best way to protect yourself

is to exercise caution and practice good prevention techniques." How is Lyme disease diagnosed? Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and on whether the person has had a tick bite or has engaged in outdoor activities in an endemic area. The medical community considers the primary symptom to be the typical bull’s-eye rash, but this skin lesion appears in fewer than 50 percent of patients. In early stages of the disease, patients may have flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, headache, fever, muscle aches and neck stiffness. In the following weeks, these can progress to joint, cardiac, cognitive and neurological symptoms. The two main difficulties in diagnosing Lyme disease are that the symptoms are not consistent across infected people and they can imitate many other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia. Furthermore, Lyme disease is not well recognized within the conventional medical

system, and there is a lack of reliable laboratory testing. This can delay timely diagnosis and treatment and lead to a debilitating, multisystem chronic illness that could have been treatable in its early stages. Currently, the incidence of Lyme disease is quite low, but figures may be skewed by the possibility that it may be underdiagnosed. How can you protect yourself from Lyme disease? Although the risk of contracting Lyme disease is not very high, the best way to protect yourself is to exercise caution and practice good prevention techniques, especially between May and September or when traveling to endemic areas. The most important thing to do is to protect yourself from tick bites. See the sidebar for tips. What should you do if you find a tick? If you find a tick attached to your skin, follow these steps: • With tweezers, gently grasp the tick’s head and mouth parts as close to your skin as possible. • Slowly pull the tick straight out—do not jerk or twist it. • Do not try not to squash it.

TIPS FOR AVOIDING TICK BITES Follow these tips to protect yourself from Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses when you’re enjoying the outdoors this spring and summer. • Cover up as much skin as you can when you’re in wooded or grassy areas. Wear a hat, a long-sleeved shirt and long pants with the legs tucked into your socks. It’s a good idea to wear light-coloured clothes so ticks are easier to see. • Use a bug spray that contains the chemical DEET to repel ticks. Spray it on your clothing only and not directly on your skin. Only use this bug spray if you will be in the bush or in the forest where there is an increased risk of tick bite. DEET is a potentially very carcinogenic chemical, so please use as indicated here. • Check yourself for ticks after you’ve been outside. • Check your pets for ticks after they’ve been outside. You can’t get Lyme disease from your pet, but your pet can bring infected ticks inside. These ticks can fall off your pet and attach themselves to you.

• Do not apply matches, cigarettes or petroleum jelly to the tick, as these may cause an infected tick to release bacteria into the wound. Lastly, contact a health-care practitioner who is trained in recognizing Lyme disease and other co-infections as soon as you discover a tick bite or develop any of the typical symptoms following outdoor activities. Anouk Chaumont, ND, graduated from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and practices in Grande Prairie at Anodyne Chiropractic and Sports Therapy. She helps people with a wide variety of conditions, from acute infections to chronic disease, and she is passionate about whole family health. Spring/Summer 2015 l GUIDED SYNERGY

The Funeral I Will Never Forget A lesson in what matters I once went to a funeral that I will never forget. Even though it happened over a decade ago, I remember it like it was yesterday.

Before getting into my current career as a leadership and executive coach, I spent twelve years as a full-time pastor. In my time as a pastor in two different churches, I offered pastoral leadership and care to thousands of people. I was used to conducting funeral services packed full, often with hundreds in attendance. These funerals became celebrations of the life and contributions of the ones who had passed. Though there was sadness, there was also gratitude for the life lived and its contributions. I remember most funerals I was part of, but one I remember more clearly than the others. I was a 23-year-old ordained minister at the time. It was in a smaller community, with decent, kind and caring people. I was called by one of our local funeral homes to conduct a service for an older gentleman who had passed away. Because I had not known him, I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I arrived, I was shocked to see an open casket and just one mourner in attendance. I checked my watch to make sure I wasn’t early. Actually, I was five minutes late. I decided to wait another ten minutes to see if anyone else would arrive. At 11:15 a.m., fully fifteen minutes after the funeral was supposed to begin, still only one mourner and I were there to

celebrate and remember a life of more than seventy years.

they end up being remembered and even celebrated.

I went through the motions of the funeral service, but I was forever shaken by that experience. I couldn’t imagine living seventy years and connecting with so few people, touching so few lives that there would be only one attendee at my funeral, along with a paid minister. That event shook me to my core, and I resolved to build a life that was full of life, full of love, full of making a difference.

In the end, this is how I believe we will be evaluated: Was I a giver and not just a taker? Was I a person who planted, not just someone who harvested? Did I seek to serve, not just to be served? Was gratitude my steady response, or was entitlement? And in the end, did my giving and planting and thanking and serving actually do anything that will last beyond this moment? Let’s live in this moment, but aim for an impact beyond it.

This goal is recognized by the adage “Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away,” attributed to Maya Angelou and others. See, true kindness is loving people with abundance and authenticity. I am convinced that when we treat each moment as precious and valuable and each interaction with another person as unique and distinctive, we are fully living and authentically loving. When we do that, we attract quality people to ourselves, and we emanate an energy of health and affirmation. Connecting with people on only a surface level leads to surface-level living and surface-level loving and surface-level results. Part of living abundantly is determining to leave a positive footprint on the world. This sort of determination causes us to act like what we do makes a difference, because in reality, it does! As the saying goes, the meaning of life is to find your gift; the purpose of life is to give it away. Heartcentred and successful people want to make a difference to the people around them, and

Since that funeral over a decade ago, I have not lived a perfect life. Far from it. But for me, it’s been pretty simple. Live fully. Love authentically. Serve gratefully. Lead effectively, with or without a title. And make a difference. I coach my clients to do the same. The funeral I will never forget was, more than anything, a reminder to me that this moment matters. Today matters. Tomorrow matters. And if this moment matters, then I matter. You matter. And when we live like we matter, our impact grows and our reach expands. Lives are healed, transformed and empowered. We’ve got this. Let’s go do it! From Rookie Runner to Marathon Enthusiast 4 tips for making the finish line L

ast year I made the leap from a respectful half marathon finish to running a marathon in the Big Apple, and I learned important lessons along the way.

a new level but suggested that I wanted too much too soon. She said I needed to work on my base; I didn’t even have 1,000 kilometres under my belt yet. Bless her heart, she accepted my challenge and strategized my five-month training agenda. For the next four months I ran my assigned runs diligently. It’s funny how a half marathon can become a training-run distance when the goal is a full marathon.

After five half marathons, I set out to crack the twohour barrier. I hired a trainer, Leah Goldstein (a world-class professional ultra-endurance athlete), and started trading junk miles for fuel-efficient ones. Hills and I became buddies. I toughened up and sucked it up through rain, mud and wind.

Five months later, fired up with adrenaline and determination, I ran the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon, smashing my personal bests: I ran the first 5 kilometres in 24:29 and the first 10 in 49:09 and finished the 21 kilometres at 1:53:39! Therein lies the first lesson.

Lesson 1: Celebrate your victories but don’t get too cocky. I was thrilled with these results, and my type-A personality plotted to push my limits. If I wanted to run a marathon, logic dictated that the time to start training was now, so why not aim for the iconic New York City Marathon in November? I made the decision to register at the beginning of July. My trainer was happy to hear that I planned to take my training to

Photos supplied

Training for a marathon is hard work! It demanded a lot more than my previous regime: • More therapy, like long soaks standing waist deep in the lake to cool my legs after a long run, and long Epsom-salt baths to soothe my muscles. • More and deeper sleep (and some afternoon catnaps).

fitness • More food—I’ve never eaten so much in my life! I even had to get up and eat in the middle of the night after a long run. With less than four weeks until the marathon I ran my last long run. Here’s a major tip for all marathon rookies: know the elevation of a long run before you start. I ran a false flat route: 18.5 kilometres on a slight incline one way and slight decline on the way back. The result? Not-so-slight shin splints! So there I was, injured a month before the marathon. The physical therapy assessment was awful. I was asked to hop on one foot but could not do it on either foot. I was in a lot more pain than I was willing to admit, and it was suggested that I forgo the marathon and take time to heal. I chose to proceed. Fortunately, our small town is equipped with state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment. For the next three weeks I practiced active recovery on the AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill at my physio clinic, running at 25 percent of my body’s weight. Although this was an adapted workout to compensate for my injury, it helped to maintain my cardio and training. In the original plan, marathon week consisted of tapering, resting and coming up with final plans and race-day strategies. My actual final week included an elephant leg, grossly swollen from my knee to the bottom of my foot due to an allergy to the Leukotape. At 6:00 on race morning, we were bussed to Staten Island for a four-hour wait, during which we rummaged through cardboard, plastic bags and whatever else we could find to keep warm—awesome conditions for my dry chest cough. The Sinatra start warmed our souls and for the first 15 kilometres I enjoyed myself. For the first time in almost a month I was running on 100 percent of my body weight. But it was a run of crosswinds and headwinds. At the halfway point I was in severe pain and so discouraged that I called my trainer. She said, “Just keep moving.” I cried and kept moving until the 27-kilometre mark, at which point my mind was going crazy. Here’s a sample of my internal dialogue: “How do I get out of here? Do I just stop and walk off the course? No, you dumbass, you’ve made it this far—just keep moving! How many more miles? Why can’t I calculate? Why can’t I think straight? Why didn’t I listen to Goldstein back in July? Why the hell am I doing this? Where the hell am I? This f*****g sucks!”

I did make it to the finish line, in 4:58:27—a far cry from the 3:45:00 I had set as my goal back in August when that was my training pace. I went from striving to qualify for the Boston Marathon to just making it across the finish line. Humbling. As it turns out, after I finished I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my right tibia. Lesson two: Listen. I did not have a solid base. I wanted too much too soon. I trained too hard in too short a time. I pushed myself rather than listening to that little internal voice that knows better or the voices of seasoned veterans. That’s a trait of a type A—it’s how we roll. Lesson three: Running is a metaphor for life. Not every game day is going to be ideal. Things happen that are out of our control; they are there to be challenged or to pass us by. I chose to challenge my circumstances and celebrate the accomplishment without attachment to the actual timed result. The process of making peace with this took many weeks. Lesson four: Practice acceptance. Ego is a wretched thing. Striving for personal fulfillment without attachment to results despite the fact that you have put yourself out there, being vulnerable and transparent with your goals and expectations—all of this is a challenge. I was so frustrated at the finish line. I was an emotional wreck for a few weeks, attending my own post-marathon–blues pity party. I was disappointed and I needed to shift my focus to acceptance and appreciation for the entire process.

And there are people who cannot run a single step. I am the first woman in my family to be involved in sport. My mom died in 2007 after spending the last ten years of her life in a vegetative state, afflicted by MS, and my dad is an alcoholic. She had no control over her health and he has sabotaged his. I run in honour of health and the constant reminder that it cannot be taken for granted. I am grateful for every step. Running is an individual sport, but it’s also therapy. I refer to it as meditation in motion. Every step, every trail- or road-running journey has many lessons and benefits for the heart, mind and soul. And it keeps the ego in check! Would I do anything differently? Hell no. But I know this experience has paved the way for a much smoother second marathon attempt. Marathoner Lori Culnane has said, “Everything you wanted to know about yourself you can learn in 26.2 miles.” As I reflect on the entire experience, I have reconciled that I did what I did because that is who I am. I’m an all-in kind of gal, a risk taker. I will forge ahead against the odds. I finished the marathon because I started it. I finished it for the many friends whose stories of persevering through running challenges and overcoming adversity have touched my heart. I finished inspired by my trainer and the friends who are quite literally marathon maniacs. As a mom, I feel that it’s important to demonstrate perseverance through blood, sweat and tears. To put things in context, people with far greater challenges finish marathons––many with far better results.

The Many Benefits of Taoist Tai Chi Practice A holistic experience promoting complete well-being

I

first started practising Taoist Tai Chi™ arts in 1994 when a friend suggested that I join a beginner class. I was a stay-at-home mom, looking for an opportunity to get out of the house and get some exercise. I had tried aerobics and other exercise groups, but they weren’t for me, so I thought I would give the class a try. I found a warm, inviting atmosphere where I could meet wonderful people while getting gentle stretching exercise. I soon began to see improvements in my health. Years before, I had suffered a soft tissue injury to my ankle. It had never completely healed and frequently caused me pain. Soon after I started the class, this problem went away, and my ankle has never bothered me since. I continued my practice with the Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi™ organization, attending regular classes in Fairview and workshops in locations such as Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Calgary and the International Centre in Orangeville, Ontario. I also began teaching others and participated in some of the other arts that the organization offers, including chanting, sitting meditation, standing meditation and other sets of movements such as Sword set and Lok Hup set, all aimed at improving health.

The Taoist Tai Chi set of 108 moves exercises the whole body, turning and stretching all the muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments, as well as gently massaging all the internal organs. As I practised and learned more, I gradually became aware of the wide array of benefits this practice brings— physical, mental and spiritual. I now have improved balance, better flexibility, greater body awareness and a better understanding of what is happening in my body, as well as more awareness of what is going on around me. I continue to have relatively good health, and I seem to have avoided some of the age- and stress-related problems that others in my family and circle of friends experience, like osteoporosis, arthritis and psoriasis. When I feel occasional twinges of wrist pain, due to my work on the computer, or knee pain, I ramp up my practice and the pain soon goes away. When one of the women at work asked me why I don’t get sick like everyone else, I told her that various studies have shown that Tai Chi boosts the immune system. The meditative aspect of Taoist Tai Chi practice helps me handle daily stress and my busy environment. I’m able to deal calmly with situations that come up and respond to negative emotions in a positive way. My

sister tells me that I am the calmest person in our family of five siblings. Following a long, stressful day at work, I feel much better after my Taoist Tai Chi class. Practice of these gentle stretching movements is an investment in my health that I wouldn’t want to do without. As some of my older friends tell me, if you don’t have your health, you have nothing. Westerners might view health as the absence of disease, while from an Eastern viewpoint, health might be seen as mental, social and physical well-being. Taoist Tai Chi practice is a holistic exercise that helps practitioners develop their health to its greatest capacity. I am so glad that I was able to find this wonderful organization and take part in these health-improving arts. I plan to continue practising Taoist arts for the rest of my life. Mary Robertson is a community pharmacist and volunteers as an accredited continuing instructor-in-training with the Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi™ organization. She instructs classes in Taoist Tai Chi™ arts in Grande Prairie and Grimshaw. She also attends classes in Fairview and Edmonton in order to continue her own training. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her grandchildren. Visit www.taoist.org.

Healing

from the Inside Out Jenn Kloberdanz's journey of self-discovery INTERVIEW BY LINDA WARWICK | WRITTEN BY KATHERINE DiPASTENA | PHOTOS BY T. SEDORE PHOTOGRAPHY

S

ome of us find our calling early in life. Others live and learn and follow our passions wherever they may lead. Personal trainer and nutrition coach Jenn Kloberdanz might have taken an unusual path, but her captivating story is easy to relate to for many women.

Kloberdanz was born in Kimberley, British Columbia, and moved a short time later to Fox Creek, Alberta, where she grew up. Life was simple in the rural town, located halfway between Grande Prairie and Edmonton. Like many other kids there, she attended Fox Creek School from kindergarten all the way through grade 12. Road trips back to Kimberley, where she spent time with her extended family and maintained a tight-knit group of friends, were the highlight of her summers. Kloberdanz recalls a pleasant childhood. A bit of an introvert by nature, she channelled her energy into academics. Her approach to learning was one of personal enjoyment—an attitude she continues to maintain as an adult. After high school, Kloberdanz attended Mount Royal University in Calgary with the plan of becoming a teacher. But homesickness kicked in after the first semester and she returned to Fox Creek, where she continued her studies at MacEwan University and achieved her goal of becoming an early childhood educator. Although she struggled to find her direction as a young adult, Kloberdanz was always certain of one thing—she wanted to be a mom. That dream came true shortly after she turned 20, when she gave birth to her daughter, Tyra. Today Tyra is 15 years old and, like her mother, has a natural aptitude for sports and takes pride in being a strong student. Some aspects of Kloberdanz’s life were on the right track, but others were not, and in 2005 she found herself at a breaking point. She was struggling in an unhealthy relationship, weighed down by low self-esteem and distracting herself to avoid the pain. Something had to give. Kloberdanz packed up and moved to Grande Prairie with her daughter, gave up alcohol and made the life-changing decision to sign up for a bodybuilding program. Bodybuilding opened her eyes to a whole new world. What drew her in was the possibility of a physical transformation—one that she hoped would melt away her insecurities. Discipline replaced 16 www.guidedsynergy.ca

indulgence and gave her something bigger than herself to focus on. Her life became regimented and the gym became her second home. Kloberdanz participated in her first competition in 2005, placing in the middle of the pack. A busy mom, Kloberdanz shifted her career to massage therapy. Ironically, she enrolled in school without ever having had a massage herself. She knew little about the profession except that she could set her own hours, work from home and have more time for her daughter. Her natural aptitude for helping others made massage therapy a perfect fit for her. While bodybuilding continued to fill a void, it was beginning to take a considerable toll. A fierce competitor by nature, Kloberdanz found herself eating less and less and working out more and more to combat feelings of inadequacy. Although her primary focus was her physical appearance, the competitive aspect became an internal struggle, one in which “good enough” was never quite within reach, and it began to have serious effects on her body. She suffered fractures in both her feet as well as adrenal fatigue, which led to secondary infertility. Recently, Kloberdanz has reflected on her bodybuilding experience with a mix of emotions. “The good lies in the discipline I learned, the dedication and the commitment it took to get to that place,” she shares in a deeply personal post on social media. “I can do anything I put my mind to.” “The bad lies in everything else,” she continues, “from the reasons I ever started doing it to the damage it has caused me. I started competing because I was extremely insecure. I attracted bad relationships that fed into that belief.” Multiple shoulder surgeries forced Kloberdanz to take a step back from both her work as a massage therapist and her intense fitness routine. Although her body healed, she was unable to continue healing her clients because of the intensely physical nature of massage therapy. But that didn’t stop her from finding ways to help others become healthier and stronger. Kloberdanz simply switched gears, turning her attention to personal training and nutrition. After spending years trying to achieve perfection from the outside in, Kloberdanz was reaching a breakthrough. She had battled anxiety and depression on and off for most of her life and was now coping with asthma and serious digestive issues from her overly

feature story regimented diet. It was time for a change, and Kloberdanz knew she had to get to the root of the problem and restore balance in her life. She detached herself from the world of bodybuilding and zeroed in on healing herself from the inside out. This time, it wasn’t just about losing weight or dropping a dress size. It was about feeling whole again. Her passion for nutrition and healthy living drew the attention of her peers who were looking for answers to their own issues. She researched natural remedies for friends whose family members were coping with conditions such as autism, ALS and cancer. Each time, the answer was similar. By removing processed foods and eliminating sugar and dairy, amazing things were happening. Visible changes were taking place and Kloberdanz was discovering her ability to help others in a whole new way. The last four years have been a whirlwind of positive growth for Kloberdanz. She has traded intense workouts for quiet meditation. She has participated in several Choices seminars, asking herself tough questions and ridding herself of the negative attitudes that had plagued her past. So many people have inspired her on her journey of self-discovery, but Kloberdanz has a particularly special place in her heart for her paternal grandmother, Grandma Mackinnon. Mackinnon has lived an abundant life while practising simplicity in every possible way, growing her own garden, volunteering in her community and going to church. What’s most remarkable is that this year she will be turning 101. The experience of making peace with herself and feeling “enough” has opened up new doors in Kloberdanz’s personal life as well as her professional one. Three years ago, she met her soul mate. The timing couldn’t have been better, as she was finally in a place where she believed she deserved to be happy, loved and accepted for who she was, not for a glossy image of someone she aspired to be. Today, Kloberdanz is happily married and lives with her daughter and stepdaughter. Although she had always imagined herself having a large family, if you asked her now, she would tell you that her life is whole. Kloberdanz’s primary focus now lies in functional diagnostic nutrition (FDN). It sounds complicated, but it’s quite the opposite. There are no quick fixes or magic pills. FDN seeks to identify the underlying causes of disease instead of treating symptoms. Using functional lab work, she identifies healing opportunities and gives her clients the tools they need to make real, sustainable changes. It’s a simple philosophy that incorporates diet, rest, exercise, supplements and stress reduction. Kloberdanz draws inspiration daily from the people she helps, and she enjoys her enlightened perspective after years of struggling to find peace. It’s not only her knowledge that allows her to educate others; the story of what brought her to where she is today truly enables her to connect with the challenges that other people face. Taking care of oneself is all about priorities. As Kloberdanz explains, “If it’s important to you, you’ll find a way. If it’s not important to you, you’ll find an excuse.” 18 www.guidedsynergy.ca

Do You Insist on Buying Only Sustainable Seafood? You can help protect vulnerable species MSC CERTIFIED S ustainability is a buzzword that is everywhere these days—with good reason. Many resources on our planet are rapidly being depleted, and we need to learn to manage these resources in a sustainable way, experts say. For example, research shows that two-thirds of the world’s fish stocks are fully exploited, over-exploited, depleted or recovering at a slow rate. This makes getting people to buy sustainable seafood an important step forward.

But what does “sustainable seafood” mean? In 2011, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) surveyed Canadians about their knowledge of sustainable seafood. Ninety-one percent felt it was important that fish and other seafood on sale in Canada come from sustainable and non-overfished stocks. On the flip side, only eight percent felt they had adequate information about where their seafood comes from and where they could get sustainable seafood. To change these statistics, the first step is to clearly define “sustainable seafood.” It is fish and shellfish that come from well-managed

sources, says WWF. The fishermen follow practices that allow the fish populations to grow and thrive rather than be depleted.

The next step is to help people find it when they are shopping. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works with fisheries, seafood companies, scientists, conservation groups and the public to promote the best environmental choices in seafood and uses the highest level of assessment standards of all programs when certifying a fishery. They play a vital role in improving the health of the oceans. Worldwide, more than 8,000 seafood products have become MSCcertified, so when you are choosing your seafood, you should look for the blue fish checkmark MSC ecolabel. The final step is to convince people to eat it. Our oceans are in a state of crisis, says WWF, and it is up to us to start making choices and taking actions that can help mitigate the consequences of decades of harmful fishery harvesting practices, pollution and a changing climate. When purchasing seafood, choose products with the MSC label. If MSC-certified products are not available, ask your retailers where their fish products come from. If your retailers can’t provide the answer, let them know that you want to know and that you want the answer to be certified. You can learn more about this topic online at wwf.ca/conservation/oceans/ sustainable_seafood.

Healthy Recipes

Herbed Salad Rolls with Thai Almond Vinaigrette

THAI ALMOND VINAIGRETTE 1½ tablespoons unsalted, natural almond butter (or sunflower seed butter or peanut butter) 1½ tablespoons fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon coconut aminos 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons honey 1 teaspoon minced garlic One-inch piece of ginger, peeled ¼ teaspoon sea salt ¾ cup melted cold-pressed, organic coconut oil Place all the ingredients except the oil in a blender or small food processor and blend until smooth. Note: The vessel of the blender or food processor needs to be small for the dressing to emulsify and not spread up the walls of the jar. Heat the coconut oil until melted fully (it will look clear). With the blender on low, slowly drizzle in the oil in a steady stream The key is to add the oil slowly. Continue blending until emulsified.

One small package thin rice noodles 1½ tablespoons rice vinegar Salt to taste 2 large butter-lettuce leaves, washed well and spun dry 8 eight-inch rounds of rice paper (plus extras in case some tear) 1 scallion, cut into julienne strips ¼ cup finely shredded carrot 1/3 cup sliced cabbage ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, whole ¼ cup fresh mint leaves, whole ¼ cup fresh cilantro leaves, whole Thai Almond Vinaigrette (recipe follows, opposite) In a bowl, cover noodles with very hot water and soak for 15 minutes; drain well in a colander. Reserve half of the noodles for another use. With scissors, cut remaining noodles into three- to four-inch lengths. In a small bowl, toss noodles with rice vinegar and salt to taste. Cut out and discard ribs from lettuce leaves, halving each leaf. In a shallow baking pan or cake pan, cover two rounds of rice paper with hot water and soak until very pliable, 45 seconds to 1 minute. Carefully spread one soaked round on a paper towel and blot with another paper towel, leaving remaining round in water. Arrange one piece of lettuce leaf on bottom half of the round, leaving a oneinch border along edge. Top lettuce with one fourth of the noodles, arranging them in a line across lettuce. Top noodles with one fourth each of scallion, carrot, cabbage and herbs. Roll up tightly, folding in ends after first roll to completely enclose filling. Spread the remaining soaked rice paper round on paper towel and blot. Place the already wrapped spring roll on the rice paper and wrap it in the second round in the same manner. (Double wrapping covers any tears and makes roll more stable and easier to eat.) Wet a paper towel and squeeze out excess water. Wrap spring roll in this paper towel and put in a resealable plastic bag. Make three more rolls with remaining ingredients in the same manner. Rolls may be made one day ahead and chilled, wrapped in wet paper towels in a sealed plastic bag. Before serving, bring rolls to room temperature. Discard paper towels. Halve rolls diagonally and serve with Thai Almond Vinaigrette. 22 www.guidedsynergy.ca

If making by hand, mince the cilantro, garlic and ginger ahead of time. Whisk together all of the ingredients except the oil and then whisk vigorously as you slowly drizzle in the oil. This dressing will harden when refrigerated, so gently warm over very low heat until it is pourable again. Recipe and photo by Kellie Timmins. Spring: The Solar First Quarter

An optimistic outlook for the new season W

e have made it; we are beyond the bastions of opposition. Congratulations all around as we spiral forward and upward. The New Moon accompanies the Sun into Aries, which is an ominously positive champion of new beginnings. Everything begins with Aries, a time when things start up again. The three months of spring will be very pleasant and a peacefully prosperous beginning of a new solar cycle. Overall, a steadying force will be anchored in practical progress. We have traversed all the major astrological bumps. With the dark dynamic behind us and a lessening of intensity, we can resume an accelerated momentum. Prosperity and abundance are once again available. There is obtainable opportunity and a better chance for success, good luck and positive results. Inspired and focused, we face limitations unemotionally. Released from intervening influences and the need for invincible

strategy, we meander more freely. In touch with our core creative fire, we direct our energies into our passion for work, creativity or whatever we find fulfilling. Excited and energized to take direct action, we follow our curiosities and interests, focusing quickly and intensively on any task we are motivated to undertake. A couple of new cycles are escorting us into the beginning of spring, enhancing our quality of life. Devotion and dedication increase, joining ample amounts of desire, determination and discipline—all the ingredients necessary to create a successful destiny. We have great potential to give birth to powerfully creative ideas and perceptions. Relationships are less strained and enter a new cycle of growth, advancement and shared experience. Taking care of ourselves and our loved ones remains a priority while we do what we can for the many others who are distressed, displaced or disadvantaged. These influences may help the long-term stability of the oil and gas industry and allow it to rally to some degree in the short term. It is likely that a correction to industry challenges will come before the end of the year. Through the people who

work in this industry, I believe we will see adjustments this spring, and a long-term fix by November 2016 is evident. There are many factors involved in such a turnaround, so negotiations and predictions depend upon the actions and will of those affiliated with the industry. The more positive mode of spring will make facing the challenges more feasible. The negative bombastic surge we experienced from 2012 to early 2015 is over, but although we are on a new course, it takes time for all things to turn around. Critical steps in the process of creating what we wish for this spring include sorting out issues of trust, creating better processes, renegotiating mutual agreements and merging perspectives. All these factors lend themselves to the wholesomeness of the results. Samantha Kane-Kennedy is the owner of Andromeda Astrology. She lives, breathes, eats, sleeps and loves her work. More Ways to Communicate with Your Angel Team Clairvoyance and claircognizance I

n the Winter 2015 issue, I shared with you how easy it is to use clairsentience and clairaudience to communicate with your angel team. In this issue I will focus on angelic communication through the senses of clairvoyance and claircognizance. As in the previous article, I discuss how my angel team uses these senses with me every day, and I encourage you to set an intention of expanding on this to be creative in working with your own angels.

Clairvoyance means “clear seeing.” I often use the term pictures when talking about this way of communicating with my angel team. My team uses my sight to communicate with me by creating pictures within my mind’s eye or third eye (the terms are synonymous to me). I may repeatedly see instances of symbols like feathers, butterflies, coins, number sequences (such as 11 11) and rainbows. I believe in no coincidence; therefore, as soon as I notice or acknowledge a symbol, I know it is a message from my team. Or I may use the symbol as a tool to

remind me to look around my environment and see if I might be missing something. My team also communicates through my dreams with vivid colours, angelic emotions and direct messages through thoughts. Each archangel communicates in a unique way, and colours and symbols help me to differentiate between them. For example, with Archangel Michael I see purple, and with Archangel Uriel I see a scroll. Here’s an exercise in using your mind’s eye. Keeping your eyes open, create your kitchen in your mind’s eye. What colours are the countertops, appliances, floor and pictures? Can you see your kitchen with colour and are you able to describe it? Most people are able to do this. Just as you see your kitchen, my team uses pictures to give me messages. I ask to see a clean white board within my mind’s eye and then they flash pictures for me, either in still form or in movie form. Yes, it is this simple! Only a small percentage of my angel communication through vision is in spirit form. Allow your angel team to show you pictures. Enjoy them! Claircognizance means “clear knowing.” I refer to this sense as our divine knowing

within. I find this sense the hardest to describe because it is so simple in its form. I trust in knowing without having to have proof. Often, this sense is combined with the three others; I know messages to be in truth, feeling, seeing and hearing. I accept the messages I receive from the divine without question or self-doubt. I just know. Trust what you know without explaining it. Your angel team acknowledges your divine knowing; trust in their support. As I said in my previous article, you have been receiving messages and guidance from your angel team from the moment you were born. Look for signs that they are communicating with you through these two senses, or ask them to do so. Cindy Smith is an Angel Empowerment Practitioner™ instructor. special feature Simple Temptations Natural Handmade Soap

Earthy Fibers and More Aphrodite Dress

Our 100% natural handmade soap is created in the European tradition using a formula of 50% olive oils. Oils of coconut and palm are incorporated to help create great lather and contribute skin-conditioning properties.

Aphrodite was the goddess of 'love, beauty, pleasure and procreation'. That pretty much covers it. Crazy sexy strappy oh-my-goddress dress in a sensual bamboo. Adjustable Grecian-style straps wrap the torso. Breastplate-style bra with peek hole. Ruffled skirt is double tiered in the front and tripled in the back. All's fair in love and war.
