publisher's message "Oh, I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow." - Cat Stevens

A Dear Old Friend H

aving grown up in the 70s, when I hear the music of that era I’m always amazed at how the words just come to me. The lyrics are deeply rooted in my memory. The words flow with ease—they are familiar and therefore comforting. As I sing along, it feels as though a dear old friend has dropped by for a visit. One of those old, familiar tunes, “Moonshadow,” was released in 1971 by Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf). When Stevens appeared on The Chris Isaak Hour in 2009, he said of this song, “I was on a holiday in Spain. I was a kid from the West End [of London]—bright lights, etcetera. I never got to see the moon on its own in the dark; there were always street lamps. So there I was on the edge of the water on a beautiful night with the moon glowing, and suddenly I looked down and saw my shadow. I thought that was so cool, I'd never seen it before.” To me, Stevens’ song is about being present and finding joy despite the shadows we all face. I believe the healthiest people radiate both inner and outer beauty. Although sometimes it takes a bit of maneuvering to create a healthy, balanced lifestyle, such beauty shows in those who have achieved this balance. In “Art Is Wellness!” Lynn LeCorreDallaire, an artist, art educator and holistic health coach, suggests that exploring our

own artistic abilities provides opportunity for growth and respite from the daily grind. Stephanie Planchak, owner of a web-based cloth diaper retail business, offers useful information on this economical and practical approach to diapering in her entertaining article, “What to Do with the Poo?” Our cover feature for this issue is Carla Green of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. This wife, mother and entrepreneur is truly an inspiration. As you will see in our feature, “Natural Beauty,” on page 16, her youthful appearance at age 57 is impressive. Having interviewed her, I can tell you she is just as beautiful on the inside, too. Green says, “The way you look is a reflection of how you feel—it shows what is going on inside.” We cherish the music and lyrics of accomplished musicians sometimes for decades after their songs have been released. For this reason, I never underestimate the importance of publishing the words and thoughts of so many accomplished health practitioners and wellness experts in our magazine. Just as Cat Stevens hadn’t seen his moonshadow before, if you haven’t read Guided Synergy Magazine before—it’s kind of cool! Whether you are a new reader or an old fan, I know you’ll enjoy the contributions of our local experts as they share hidden gems and words of wisdom in this issue. And maybe, after savouring each page, you will feel like a dear old friend who has dropped by for a visit. Linda Warwick, Publisher

What to Do with the Poo? Answers to your cloth diapering questions A re you considering using cloth diapers for your baby? Here are the answers to the top questions we get when teaching parents-to-be about this diapering option.

What do you do with the poo? Come on, admit it. This is your biggest question about cloth diapering, right? What exactly do you do with the poo? It’s simple! Shake the solids into the toilet and put the diaper into a washable, waterproof wet-bag. No touching poo, no dunking diapers in the toilet, no soaking them in a tub—and just as fast as changing a disposable. Your washing machine can handle the rest, and the diapers come out fresh and clean. If you’re not on a septic system, you can even use flushable diaper liners made from soft, biodegradable material; just peel the dirties right off into the toilet. Don’t cloth diapers leak? Not when you change your baby regularly (as you should no matter what kind of diaper you use). You know what leaks? A blow-out in a disposable diaper. Any seasoned parent who’s used disposables can tell you those diaper explosions require a complete change of clothing. But in cloth that’s all contained. And what about for overnight? A goodquality, fitted diaper with a waterproof polyurethane laminate or wool cover is all you need for dry and happy sleep, even once your baby starts sleeping ten to twelve hours a night. Quality is the key. If you want to have a successful experience using cloth, choose a brand with a good reputation. There are many great choices, including Rumparooz, Bummis, bumGenius, Thirsties, Blueberry, AppleCheeks, Nuggles and many others. Aren’t they smelly? Don’t they get smelly while they’re waiting to be washed? Remember, you’ve already flushed the major poo down the toilet, so what’s left on the diaper is minimal. Keep soiled diapers in a large waterproof wetbag with an open top (airflow is your friend here) and there won’t be much odour to speak of. On the other hand, poo wrapped in a disposable diaper rotting in your bathroom garbage can—that really stinks. In comparison, cloth diapers are much less

aromatic. You won’t even know they’re there waiting for wash day. Does it really save you money? The infographic below gives an idea of how much you can save (note that your figures may vary somewhat from these). A set of cloth diapers can cost from $150 to more than $800, depending on the style and brand you choose. Disposables run at least $2,000 per child, depending on how fast your baby gets out of diapers. Even with electricity, water and detergent costs, cloth still wins out, especially if you intend on having more than one baby. How many diapers do I need? I hate extra laundry. If you plan to use cloth diapers full time and wash them every two or three days, you

need twenty-four to thirty diapers for the first six months. Babies six months and older can get away with sixteen to twenty diapers. Washing is simply two extra loads per week—easier than hauling your baby to the store when it’s -30 degrees out. You’ll never run out of diapers and you won’t have to carry stinky disposables to the curb for garbage pickup. Rinse, wash, rinse and then dry in the dryer and you’re done. Use any good-quality, clean-rinsing detergent. Don’t use dryer sheets or petroleum-based rash creams; they’ll decrease absorbency. Want to learn more? There’s a lot of misinformation on the Internet that can make simple diapering seem very confusing. Seek out your nearest cloth diaper retailer—they’re the experts— or enroll in a cloth diapering class, where you can see and feel the different types and brands to decide what will work for your baby and your budget. Most importantly, remember that you don’t need to use cloth diapers full-time. Each time you use cloth, you’re preventing a disposable (and its contents) from entering the landfill. Considering that it takes an estimated five hundred years for a disposable diaper to biodegrade, each diaper counts. Try cloth diapering. You just might enjoy it! Stephanie Planchak is the owner of Cloth Diaper Kids, a web-based cloth diaper specialty retailer in Grande Prairie, Alberta. A mother of three, she holds a business degree from the University of Alberta, teaches cloth diapering classes to new parents and runs her business from home between diaper changes. Top 10 Tips for Improving Your Young Child's Sleep

Strategies you can use now R emember those days when you would get ready for bed, crawl under your nice warm blankets, lay your head on your perfect pillow and drift off for a solid eight hours of blissful sleep? Once kids come into your family, it seems like sleep becomes a long-lost memory. But you’re not alone— according to pediatric sleep expert Dr. Jodi Mindell, about 20 to 30 percent of children from birth to preschool age have trouble falling and staying asleep.

The most common sleep disturbances parents consult me about are frequent night waking, early morning waking, short naps and difficulties falling asleep. These problems are frustrating for families and can cause exhaustion and stress in the home. But don’t give up hope! There are many simple strategies you can implement to get your child’s sleep on the right track. Sleep is like a puzzle; by working on each piece, you can move towards an improved night’s rest. Here are my ten favourite sleep tips for families of young children. Create a baby cave. Light has the largest effect on our sleep hormones. Light tells our body to be awake and darkness tells it to go to sleep. Make sure the room your child sleeps in is very dark so that it’s sending the right message. Aim for complete darkness if you can.

AWAKE-TIME CHART Age Maximum awake time 0-1 month: Duration of last sleep up to 40 min. 1-2 months: Duration of last sleep up to 45-60 min. 2-3 months: Duration of last sleep up to 60-80 min. 3-4 months: Duration of last sleep up to 60-90 min. 5 months: 2 hours 6-7 months: 2½-2¾ hours 8-9 months: 3 hours 10 months until transition to one nap: 3-4 hours Once on 1 nap: 4½-5½ hours 10 www.guidedsynergy.ca

Use white noise. The constant static of white noise helps babies up to 4 months old feel safe because it reminds them of being in the womb (which is far from quiet!). For older children, it provides a consistent sound that can help extend sleep cycles as well as block out disturbing noises from outside the bedroom. Establish a healthy bedtime routine. A healthy routine allows your child to relax and get ready for sleep. The cues used should be the same each night and include things that your child enjoys. For example, your routine might consist of a bath, a lotion massage, pajamas, a book, a song and then getting into bed. Create a healthy nap routine. Your child’s body also needs cues for nap time. Your nap routine should be a short version of your nighttime routine, with the last couple of steps the same. It might include a diaper change or trip to the potty, a book, a song and then getting into bed. Use a security object. Having a lovey, such as a favourite stuffed animal or blanket, is a great way to encourage security in your child’s bedroom.

It becomes the object that allows your child to feel safe during sleep. Establish an early bedtime. Infants and children naturally begin producing sleep hormones in the early evening. Getting them to sleep while this “sleep window” is open can prevent many bedtime battles. The awake-time chart below shows the maximum time your child should be awake between sleep periods. Use it as a guide for how long after the last nap your child should be going to bed for the night. Regulate naps. Late naps can lead to late bedtimes. For children 3 months and up who take more than three naps a day, have the last nap end by 5:00 p.m. Once your child is taking just three naps, have the last one end by 4:30 p.m. When your child is down to two naps, the last should end by 4:00 p.m. Prevent overtiredness. It might seem counterintuitive, but keeping your child from becoming overtired improves sleep. To prevent overtiredness, aim for an awake time ten minutes less than the maximum shown in the awake-time chart.

SLEEP-TIME CHART Age 0-2 months 2-4 months 4-6 months 6-9 months 9-12 months 12-18 months 18-24 months 2-3 years 3-5 years

Notes: • Newborns cycle through sleep/wake periods fairly evenly over 24 hours. • A four-nap pattern usually emerges at around 4 months. • By 6 months, a three-nap schedule is beneficial. • Make the transition to two naps at around 9 months. • The transition from two naps to one typically occurs around 15 months.

Have just one place for sleeping. It’s not always easy in our busy lives, but having a consistent sleep environment allows for more restful sleep. Just as adults like to be in their own beds, so do babies. If you need to have your baby sleep elsewhere, try to make it during the last nap of the day instead of during the earlier, more restorative naps.

Rayleen would be happy to demonstrate or discuss the applications and benefits of dōTERRA Essential Oils

Make sure your child gets enough sleep. Most importantly, make sure your little ones are getting the sleep they need. The sleep-time chart on the previous page is a good guide. Please note that every baby is different, and yours may need a little more or a little less. A good night’s sleep doesn’t have to be just a fond memory from your life before children. With these tips, your baby—and you— should sleep better! Hailee Schollaardt is a certified maternity and child sleep consultant. Her business, Nurturing Sleep Solutions, is based out of Sexsmith, Alberta. She lives with her husband, 2½-year-old son and 4-month-old daughter.

Elevate Your Impact 6 daily routines that will change your life W

hat do Warren Buffett (investor), Angela Merkel (chancellor), Barack Obama (president) and Winston Churchill (prime minister) have in common? What is the thread that ties together Jack Dorsey (entrepreneur), Maya Angelou (author), Benjamin Franklin (founding father), Claudia Chan (leadership expert) and Shama Hyder (social media guru)? The obvious answers are success, prominence and impact. The not-so-obvious answer is a daily routine.

A significant body of research and profound real-life experience suggest that having impact and experiencing success are all about our daily routines. Daily routines define our moments, and the accumulation of moments determines the course of our entire lives. As Mike Murdock said, “The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.” The word routine, borrowed from French in the sixteenth century, is derived from route, “a direction, road or path.” A routine is a regularly performed set of actions. People who make the greatest impact, personally or professionally, always follow a route or a routine. The things we do every

12 www.guidedsynergy.ca

day matter more than the things we do once in a while. In The Story of Philosophy, Will Durant sums up Aristotle’s thoughts on habit: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” In the words of William James, humans are “mere walking bundles of habits,” and so our impact and success are crystallized by the things that make up our bundles. The following six daily routines tend to populate the habit bundles of people who are most successful and have the highest impact, and they can also elevate your impact: Internalize. We live in a fast-paced world where externals consistently scream for our attention. To play on the field of high impact, we need to be comfortable with the externals, but we also need to internalize: to withdraw and be alone for a period of time each day. People who make a large impact are equally comfortable in the internal and external realms. They understand that if we operate exclusively in the external and don’t spend daily time in the internal, our outflow will far exceed our inflow, and our output will soon surpass our capacity. High-impact people take time to be with themselves, and in this place they find centring and focus. Energize. People with a high level of impact understand inherently that self-care is perhaps the smartest investment we can make because it keeps us energized, and

energy leads to productivity. Investments with the highest return are in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms. Energizing physically generally involves sufficient sleep, nutrition and exercise. Energizing mentally and emotionally can include continual learning and development, healthy relationships, visualization and affirmations. Energizing spiritually can include meditation, prayer, journalling and communing with nature. The most efficient people on the planet take time to rest, replenish, recharge and re-energize. Productive people are energetic people. Prioritize. Prioritization is simple in concept, yet can be difficult in application. Prioritization flows when we first internalize and energize, because when we take time to centre and focus and to rest and replenish, we become much clearer on our priorities. If your priorities are unclear, this could indicate that you need time to internalize and energize. At its core, prioritization is simply about deciding what to say yes to and what to say no to—and sticking to it. So much potential is wasted when we say yes to what we should say no to and when we say no to what we should say yes to. The daily routine of high-impact people includes time to sort out the yeses from the noes, and the primary criterion they use is this: What is the most valuable use of my time in order to achieve my long-term goals? This alone

personal growth separates the yeses from the noes and separates high-impact people from minimal-impact people. Strategize. Strategy flows from priority. The definition of strategy is simply a plan of action to fulfill an objective. So, priorities determine objectives, while strategies determine plans. High-impact people never strategize without taking time to prioritize. Likewise, they do not just prioritize; they always strategize as well. Strategy involves the notions of planning and efficiency, incorporates tactics and logistics and includes the nuances of interpersonal and professional relationships. Strategy takes time and effort, but is well worth it. Though our days rarely go exactly according to plan, success is seldom accidental. Planning positions you for success in a way that the lack of planning never can. Often the critical difference between high-potential people who don’t perform and high-performance people is simple: strategy and its execution. Visualize. As part of their daily routine, high-impact people visualize mobilizing their strategy successfully. Do you see yourself succeeding in your goal, or do you see yourself failing and not achieving? I cannot overstate the importance of visualization. Albert Einstein has been credited with saying, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” Before any major goal can be achieved, it must first become a reality in the subconscious mind. When we learn how to use our imagination and then imagine ourselves achieving a goal—so much that our feelings about the goal are the same as if we have already achieved it—then that goal will become a reality. Your expectations determine your whole life: You are thinking, feeling, experiencing and doing what your expectations allow. You are creating, growing, building and dreaming what your expectations permit. Mahatma Ghandi said, “If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.” And about two thousand years earlier, Jesus said, “All things are possible to him that believes.” Learning new visualizations, expectations and beliefs often requires breaking free of our stresses and fears. Verbalize. There is power in our proclamation. Words can light a fire in our minds, they can calm a storm in our hearts, they can pull tears from our eyes and they can inspire energy and passion in our soul. Words can carry a message of confidence and conquest, healing and hope, or they can carry a message of failure and fear, regret and reversal. The words we speak powerfully ripple through our lives, setting our course. High-impact people verbalize their passions, their possibilities and their path, shouting out empowerment through their proclamation. One final thought: Become a high-impact person, because those closest to you and the world need you to do so. Collectively, we need the gifts, treasures and aspirations that lie within you. But as you do, pay close attention to your daily routines. Confucius said, “Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that separate them.” People who make the greatest impact have a daily routine. Art Is Wellness! Explore the possibilities R emember, when you were a child, colouring and painting and singing and dancing? You didn’t care if you were good at it. You enjoyed it and that was all that mattered! As an adult, do you still express yourself through art? Creating art has real benefits for wellness, no matter what your age. It relieves stress, encourages mindfulness, provides a venue for selfexpression and teaches us to let go of perfectionism and self-criticism. Art is wellness!

As a child, I created art because it was fun; I thrived at it and eventually pursued it as a career. But I didn’t realize how much it would contribute to my own wellness. Creating art has helped me out of depression from loss, offered respite from boredom and provided extra income when I was poor. It has been my primary means of self-care, allowing me to refill my cup and handle the everyday stress of motherhood, work and other life challenges. Art has added joy, wonder, focus, discipline, growth and purpose to my life. I consider my art practice like an old friend or a comforting blanket—a place to escape when I need solitude and peace. I recently offered an art workshop to a group of adults recovering from addictions. I wanted to provide them with an opportunity to learn simple drawing skills and to open the doors of possibility for a more positive lifestyle. One participant couldn’t believe how successful he was at drawing in such a short time. I asked him, “Can you image where you’d be today if these skills were offered to you when you were young?” Creative hobbies offer so much more than the distraction we get from watching TV or browsing the Internet. They provide interest, leisure, focus, practice, confidence, growth and a respite from our daily grind. But for many people, the doors of art and creativity are closed at a young age, due to

self-criticism, lack of opportunities or lack of understanding about the benefits art provides. The good news is that anyone can learn, at any age—it’s never too late. No experience required!

“Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.” –Kurt Vonnegut Health and wellness experts constantly reminded us that we need to slow down, be present and let go of stress. Mindfulness is the key to living in the moment, taking a break from our to-do lists and dropping our emotional baggage. All forms of art— drawing, painting, crafts, photography, sculpting, knitting, sewing, woodworking, music, digital media or whatever creative activity you like to do—are a source of mindfulness, offering a meditative space to escape to. As Betty Edwards explains in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, art taps into our right-brain mode, allowing us to think holistically, intuitively and concretely. This counters our left-brain mode, which likes activities that are linear, rational and analytic. Right-brain functions encourage being present, focusing on the task at hand and losing all sense of time. Artists call this “being in the zone.”

How do you get into the zone when you can’t get started? Fear and self-criticism often block us from moving forward. We are our own worse critics because our expectations are too high. This leads to selfdoubt or criticism, which leads to fear, and fear stops us dead in our tracks. How many times have you told yourself you’re not good at this or don’t have a talent for that? First, change your expectations. We don’t have to be masters at an activity to receive its benefits. I have never been an athlete, yet I enjoy being physically active. Second, try to approach the arts like a child would. Let go of your inner critic and learn to play with art simply for fun and selfexpression. Take a class, learn some skills, and with some guidance and practice you will grow. If you find the activity fun, you will want to continue to practice. The arts are not a frill, something to be dabbled in only when we are children or after we retire. Self-expression is as necessary for our soul as food is for our body. We are creative beings—it’s what drives us and makes us thrive. Creativity is in all of us, waiting to be woken up to the excitement of discovery and exploration. Art is for everyone, no matter what your age or skill level. Think beyond art as a calling or a career and use it as an expressive outlet or meditative practice. Go inwards to find wellness, and open your mind to the possibilities art has to offer! Lynn LeCorre-Dallaire is an artist, art educator and holistic health coach at Drawing on Wellness (www.drawingonwellness.com). She believes that wellness is about healing and nurturing our emotional, spiritual and physical self. The road to wellness is internal and external and should be a fun and creative journey!

Natural Beauty Carla Green heals from within

INTERVIEW BY LINDA WARWICK | WRITTEN BY KATHERINE DiPASTENA | PHOTOS BY PHOTOS WITH ASHLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

S

ome people are born to be healers. They radiate positivity and the ability to identify that which is broken and find ways to make it whole again. Carla Green is that kind of person. Her bright, infectious smile and her joyful presence are just two of the qualities that set her apart from the crowd. Beyond that, Green has found her purpose in helping others in ways they may not have known were even possible. Green grew up in a big family with strong values and a traditional way of life in Cobden, Ontario, a rural community in the Ottawa Valley. Her parents were hardworking Dutch immigrants who gave up everything familiar to explore new opportunities in Canada. Green attributes much of her drive to the strong work ethic of her parents. In high school, Green discovered a passion for track and field. Her outstanding abilities as a sprinter led her to several large competitions outside of her small community. She fondly recalls the relationship she had with her coach, who went above and beyond in her mentorship. Their friendship carried on into Green’s adulthood, when her coach became her maid of honour, standing by her side on one of the most important days of her life. Green’s athletic abilities captured the attention of the other coaches in her small high school, but she found it difficult to get excited about team sports, and it took a whole lot of convincing to get her to join the basketball team. This move, seemly insignificant, may have been the reason Green finds herself in her chosen profession today. A serious injury on the court knocked Green off her feet and tore all the ligaments in her ankle. Her days of running hurdles were over and the road to recovery was long, but it put her directly in the path of her calling. She spent three months in a physiotherapist’s clinic, and there she learned about healing, building strength and treating ailments outside of the confines of traditional medicine. In 1977, Green applied for the physical therapy program at the University of Alberta, and as luck would have it, a last-minute cancellation allowed her immediate acceptance for the upcoming school year. Leaving home was tough, but she was anxious to learn among the best and brightest. She promised her mother she’d be back in four years. Almost four decades later, she’s still in Alberta. Green laughs when she recalls the reason she and her husband, Bill, chose to settle in Rocky Mountain House: “We both wanted to live in a small town. Bill is a country boy, and coming from a small town in Ontario, we wanted to find a place that felt like home.” 16 www.guidedsynergy.ca

They unfolded a map and more or less pointed at Rocky Mountain House. The priority was to find a place where they could open a private clinic and serve the local community in a way that would truly make a difference. Within a few weeks, they found the perfect space, and the overwhelming welcome from local health-care providers was all the reassurance they needed that they had come to the right place. The joys of motherhood caught Green by surprise. Having children seemed like a nice idea, but her practice was already so fulfilling. It was hard to imagine being able to step back from it to raise a family. But the birth of her first child allowed her to let go. She revelled in being a parent, and after three boys and a girl, the Green family was complete. Although it wasn’t always easy, she found a balance amid the chaos. “There is no doubt sacrifices were made,” recalls Green, “but we always found a way to either stay home with our children or bring them to the clinic with us when they were young enough.” The desire to live a healthy lifestyle and help others do the same clearly runs in the family. Today, two of Green’s four children work in the health and wellness industry. Green’s ability to heal isn’t limited to people. A self-professed animal lover, Green has practiced holistic healing on her family pets with incredible success. A litter of puppies born to one of their dogs contracted canine parvovirus, a highly contagious disease with an incredibly high fatality rate. Green set to work administering acupuncture on the tiny dogs, day after day; against all odds, all but one survived. Green has found inspiration for living well within her own family. If you’ve ever attended one of her popular seminars, “Secrets of the Exceptionally Healthy,” you know a thing or two about her mother, who at 94 is a testament to the long-term positive effects of simple, healthy living. Strong and independent, she still sings in the choir, is free from prescribed medications and has recently adopted a gluten-free diet to keep her memory as sharp as her physical health. Although, given her credentials, Green could have found her place working within a local hospital, her clinic allows her to do things her own way—and her track record speaks for itself. Complementary healing isn’t without challenges. Our society is accustomed to traditional medicine and drugs that are Band-Aids for symptoms, so embracing something outside the norm can be a stretch for patients. The truth, says Green, is that many inexpensive

feature story and natural remedies are much more effective and less damaging to the body in the long run. Many of Green’s patients come to her as a last resort because modern medicine has failed them. “Those are the people,” she says, “who are much more receptive to trying something out of the ordinary.” One of her most memorable success stories was a young child fighting for her life in a Calgary hospital. Her parents, desperate for an alternative, were referred to Green. Their daughter was scheduled to begin chemotherapy, and they were overwhelmed by the long road ahead. After assessing her condition, Green prescribed a tailored holistic treatment program. Within a few weeks, the little girl’s blood counts improved sufficiently for her to be discharged from the hospital. Green truly believes that the body has the ability to heal itself. “Every day, cells die in your body and cells are renewed,” she explains. “The things you fuel your body with are all it has to heal and build new cells. If you eat well and give yourself what you need, your body will thrive. If you do the bare minimum, your body will use whatever it has available. The way you look and feel will be a reflection of that.” Some say that beauty is only skin deep, but Green argues that it’s quite the opposite. “The way you look is a reflection of how you feel—it shows what is going on inside, how you are feeling and whether or not your body is getting the nutrients it needs. Looking good isn’t about vanity. It’s about healing yourself from the inside out.” This is the philosophy behind Second Chance Facial Rejuvenation®, an anti-aging process co-developed in 2003 by Green and her

18 www.guidedsynergy.ca

husband. Green first tried it out on herself. The results were astounding, and she couldn’t believe how many people commented on how vibrant she looked. She still does today, at the age of 57. After conducting extensive research and ensuring that the process was something she felt confident about, Green added it to her repertoire of services that help her clients look and feel their best. The process uses micro-current techniques and essential oils for a highly effective, non-surgical defence against aging. It can be used to treat acne scarring, age spots and pigmentation problems, among a wide range of facial imperfections. The Second Chance Facial Rejuvenation training program is open to anyone and is wildly popular, as the process can be used for self-treatment or as an area of self-employment. Spare time isn’t something that Green has a lot of, but she acknowledges that it’s her own doing. Her passion for her work drives her to continue learning, exploring new healing practices and broadening her horizons in a field that she enjoys every day. She and Bill do make time to travel and be with family whenever possible. When she’s looking for a release, Green says, there is none better than dancing. Reflecting on her journey, Green views the past with a spirit of gratitude. The obstacles that stood in her way and the challenges that once seemed insurmountable transformed into forks in the road that led her to where she is today. Difficult experiences have been overshadowed by new opportunities for growth. Green is overwhelmed by thankfulness for her family, her career and the ability to help others in the most meaningful way possible: restoring their health to give them a new lease on life. “Tune in to your inner voice,” she advises. “Never dismiss your intuition. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t, but if you have a good feeling, you never know where it might lead.”

4 Yoga Poses to Keep You Warm This Winter

Stretching towards warmth and energy S

taying active and healthy throughout the winter can be challenging. Sometimes it can be too cold or dark to leave your cozy living room. Or maybe the options for winter activities are too limiting—not all of us are brave enough or have the resources to go skiing or snowboarding. But a regular yoga practice is accessible to most anyone, and these four poses can help keep you heated, energetic and inspired throughout the winter.

Before beginning, warm up your body, breath and mind with three Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskara). Crescent Lunge with a twist (Parivrtta Anjaneyasana)Crescent Lunge is a powerful standing pose that strengthens the legs and stretches the entire body. Adding the upper body twist increases the challenge of balancing, warms up the belly and stretches out the spine, shoulders and chest. Standing at the top of your mat, take a big step back with your left foot. Keep your heel lifted and find stability on the ball of your foot. Bend deep into your right knee, keeping it aligned over your ankle. Don’t sink into your hips, but feel strong and stable in your feet. When you’re ready, lift your arms over your head. Keeping your fingertips activated, exhale and twist to the left, dropping your arms in line with your shoulders. Keep your neck over your spine. Rotate this twist from left to right, coming back to centre and lifting your arms up before switching sides. If at anytime this feels like too much, drop your back knee down.

• October 27, 2015 - Women and Money - How to protect

Not only will the lunge build heat in your legs, but pairing it with a twist will activate the Manipura or Navel Chakra, which is located in the middle of your abdomen, behind your navel. Its element is fire, and activating it can help warm up your body from the inside out while building self-confidence and self-awareness.

fitness Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana) Upward-Facing Dog expands your chest, shoulders and abdomen while strengthening your arms and lower back muscles. From Crescent Lunge pose, sweep your fingertips down to your mat with your hands on either side of your front foot. Press into the palms of your hands, activate your core and step your front foot back so you find yourself in Plank pose. From there, lower down onto your belly and place the tops of your feet on the mat. Place your hands beside your rib cage. Press into your palms and knuckles, squeeze your elbows by your side, roll your shoulders back and begin to elongate your arms. If this is enough of a stretch for you, stay here in Cobra pose. If you want to take it further, lift your hips and thighs off the mat so that only the tops of your feet and your palms are in contact with the mat. It’s important to keep your collarbones facing forward, your head lifted and your throat open. This will help activate the Vishudha or Throat Chakra, which is associated with communication and speech; its element is sound. Do you get frequent colds or sore throats in the winter? If so, this chakra could be out of balance. Don’t fall into the temptation of isolating yourself this winter. Practice this pose to help you stay healthy and vocal.

Upward-Facing Dog

From Mountain pose (Tadasana), step your left foot back. Bend your knee and pick up your left foot with your left hand. Spin your palm away from you so that your thumb is aligned with your big toe. Lift your right arm up, and slowly tilt your chest forward while kicking out your left leg behind you, with your gaze straight ahead and soft. Opening your chest here will help activate the Anahata or Heart Chakra. Anahata is associated with feeling calm and serene. The element associated with it is air. It’s important to exercise Anahata in the winter, as we often limit our air intake in the cold months by taking short, shallow breaths. This pose counters that habit and invites long, calming breaths into your body.

Lord of the Dance

Reach your arms wide and up over your head, interlacing your fingers. If this is too much, keep your hands on your hips. Lift your ribs high, opening your chest towards the sky, and then hinge forward. Keep your spine straight and a slight bend in your knees. Your knuckles will reach away from you as your arms come overhead, bending forward. Aim to reach the top of your head to the mat as your arms continue to come forward, but stop when you feel a comfortable stretch. Bending forward like this is a good way to change your perception—something we don’t do often enough—and can help activate your Sahasrara or Crown Chakra, inviting trust and a deeper connection to oneself. Its element is inner light, allowing you to feel happy and connected to the universe. Inversion poses are also known to help fight depression, a common diagnosis in the winter. Opening your shoulders intensifies the stretch and opens your chest, helping your breath to flow freely and warmly throughout your body. Remember that everyone’s practice and bodies are different. Some poses may be more accessible to some people than to others. What’s most important is that you show up for yourself and do your best while continuing to breathe and challenge yourself.

Wide Forward Fold (Prasarita Padottanasana) with a shoulder stretch This pose strengthens and stretches your inner and back legs, your spine and your shoulders; relieves mild backache; and calms your mind. From Mountain pose (Tadasana), take a wide stance lengthwise across your mat.

Lisa Peters is a 200-hour certified yoga instructor born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta. She has over five years of experience with yoga and loves to share yoga and learn from others. Lisa believes in the physical, spiritual and mental benefits of yoga and hopes to help students find their own unique yoga journey.

Wide Forward Fold

Lord of the Dance (Natarajasana) This expansive standing backbend will help open up your chest, increase your flexibility and build strength in your back and your standing leg. Fall 2015 l GUIDED SYNERGY 21

Synergy Bookshelf IT DIDN'T START WITH YOU: HOW INHERITED FAMILY TRAUMA SHAPES WHO WE ARE AND HOW TO END THE CYCLE AUTHOR: MARK WOLYNN ISBN-10: 1101980362 ISBN-13: 978-1101980361 A groundbreaking approach to transforming traumatic legacies passed down in families over generations. Mark Wolynn focuses on identifying and breaking inherited family patterns. The book includes moving stories, the latest research, and extensive material on the Core Language Approach and how to map out family patterns to achieve greater insight into our lives. Inherited family trauma is currently an area of growing interest as science increasingly explores what we know intuitively: that the effects of trauma can pass from one generation to the next, and that the answers to some of our greatest life problems often lie not within our own story, but in the experiences of our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and extended family. - www.amazon.ca

Wanderlust Yoga Festival Finding my true north

M

y heart was blown open and the amount of gratitude overwhelming my blissed-out soul was indescribable. The word that continuously rolled through my mind was community. Loving and being loved is a simple trade that naturally puts the world in motion, a beautiful notion of karma and its symmetry. What you are the world is, and at Wanderlust Festival Whistler, I was nothing but my purest, most authentic self in a village of euphoria. Each day, any egotistical persona was wisped away as I strolled through the village of Whistler, surrounded by majestic mountains, live music, first-class vibrations and smiling yogis. Expectations and judgments blew past as my heart felt like it was skipping through Disneyland. The Soulscape class with Gina Caputo and DJ Drez kicked off the weekend with an inspirational integration of music and yoga, creating a playful community of laughter with a blend of breath and vinyasa flow. DJ Drez said, “Our mother’s heartbeat is the first beat we ever hear. Before we are born, we are kicking, we are dancing— it is instinct. Go with the flow and listen to the beat.” This transcendental experience was only the beginning of my meditative adventure. With a wide variety of live entertainment, including Nahko Bear and Medicine for the People, MC Yogi, Michael Franti and the High and Mighty Brass Band, my feet couldn’t stop moving as my heart danced into the clouds.

We meditated on a mountain surrounded by cellos and love. Then my cheeks went numb and I grew a rock-solid six-pack at laughter yoga. Rolling on my back, crying in laughter—I never thought I could laugh so hard over nothing. Happiness truly is contagious, and if I had one wish in the world, it would be for everyone to become involved in laughter yoga. A true journey and mental practice, yoga has evolved and shifted my perspective in every part of this beautiful life. My spiritual side was awakened every time Seane Corn’s harmonic voice led us in a Sun Salutation: “Inhale to the Father. Exhale to the Mother. Lower to the Earth. Lift to the Sky. Press back a breath into yourself.”

For anyone looking for true bliss, I encourage you to wander and get lost. Express, explore, evolve. Chloe Szakacs was born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta. She teaches yoga in Kelowna, BC. Her passion to makes others’ hearts smile is only one of the many reasons she will forever practice the art of yoga. “I love to love,” she says.

The abundance of beauty and comfort forever running through my veins is so pure it radiates into my surroundings. I will never forget my experience at Wanderlust, and my life will forever be changed because of it. Thank you, Guided Synergy, for giving me the opportunity to walk this beautiful path of openness, propelling myself into a whole new dimension of discovery.

Strategic Diversity

Renewed optimism for seasonal opportunities W

e are back to work in earnest as the fall rolls in. Whether we’re focusing on self-development or business, when the equinox comes, we are at our stations.

While our eagerness bolsters our commitment, it creates potential for overenthusiastic folly. Our intuition is overwhelmed by inventiveness, leading us into unknown terrain and serendipitous happenstance. But there is an imperceptible steadiness to this impulsiveness. It is all good. The excursion provides occurrences we would have otherwise missed. We might feel disoriented, even though we have landed in the right place. Nurture the correct end result of these synchronicities to create new connections and alliances. Developing a network will fuel the goalchanging commitment emerging within this atmosphere of conversion. Strategic diversity is what is needed.

Our quest opens up in a substantial and very demonstrable way. Our senses are in tune with our intellect, ready to fuel and fix, restore or improve the situations surrounded by the most pressure. Our lack of surety is inevitably replaced by a sense of assurance. We find the answers we seek, and then the details emerge more fully. What we do not know and cannot say will trigger the most pivotal, life-changing resolution. Once deciphered, it is like the seed head of a dandelion; the opportunities will abound in the breeze. We will find the keys that open all possibilities and provide solutions, pieces of the puzzle or missing genius. Feeling effective comes by November. Slowly but surely, security and stability replace fear and paranoia. The dilemma of extremism, the volatility of the stock market and the troubled oil industry should see more positive trends by this time. We work with renewed confidence because we are more certain about what is best. We are able to look outward, toward the future, with renewed inner fortitude. Transformation and evolutionary transfiguration are still very strong and will continue for another few years, but the

major challenges to the world economy and materialism have not yet clicked into place. We have time to get our values and financial affairs and stock market exit in order before March 2019. Financial values are shifting toward an understanding that there is a “no choice urgency for investment in new technology as we witness climate and earth change. Our planet and the natural world seriously need it to ensure our survival, and whatever we seriously need will be the investment catchment of the future. Until these trends are revealed, many are putting their investments into more secure holdings. To change our economic model, the rules and regulations that trap us will need to shift during the years 2019 through 2025 as we invent new ways of thinking. There are solutions to be found at every step between now and then. If we look for them, we will find them. Samantha Kane-Kennedy is the owner of Andromeda Astrology.
