With his bestselling spiritual guide The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived "in the now." In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world. Tolle describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence. www.amazon.ca

Seeing Beyond 20/20 When glasses are not enough I

This is an extreme case of the visual system not performing the way it should. For many people the effects are less extreme: motion sickness, headaches after reading or computer work, skipping words on the page or occasional double vision. But even these lesser effects can have a drastic impact on your quality of life. I have never been the type of person to settle for the statement “There’s nothing I can do about it.” As a practitioner, I am frustrated by this because I feel that my job is to do something about it, regardless of what the “it” is. For many of my patients, my doing something involves prescribing eyeglasses or contact lenses to compensate for their nearsightedness or farsightedness, allowing them to see clearly. For others, my doing something involves prescribing specialized eyeglasses or contact lenses customized to their specific visual environment, therefore alleviating visual discomfort or eyestrain. For a few patients, however, eyeglasses are simply not enough. If the issue is deeper in the visual system, simply putting on a pair of glasses will not solve the problem. Many of these patients have been told that there is nothing wrong or that there is nothing that can be done. This is where vision therapy comes in. Vision is more than just the ability to see clearly. It is also the ability to respond to what is seen. Unlike the rest of our senses, vision is both active and reactive. It guides our movement (active) and helps us respond to our environment (reactive).

Without good visual input, our interaction with the world is hindered. Our visual system is complex. To operate properly it requires the visual skills that receive information: the ability to focus and see objects clearly, to track and keep objects in our central vision and to use both eyes together to see a single object rather than two objects. It also requires the visual perceptual skills within the brain that process the information received through the eyes. We are not born with our visual skills, but rather we develop them as we grow. Since these skills are developed, they can be improved. This is done with a program of vision therapy, akin to physical therapy for the eyes. It is an individualized treatment program prescribed by a doctor of optometry to improve visual skills such as eye movement accuracy, focusing control, eye teaming/coordination and visual perceptual skills. Vision therapy helps children and adults learn, relearn and reinforce these specific skills.

and potential. After undergoing vision therapy, children can become more confident and achieve more at school. Adults can be more comfortable and productive in their environment. My patient described in the first paragraph, who complained that the world was constantly moving, is now able to drive, see in 3-D and read for pleasure. She is happier and enjoying life more than she has in the past twenty years. Vision therapy changed her life. Dr. Kyla Hunter is an optometrist at Aurora Eye Care in Grande Prairie. She specializes in pediatric and developmental optometry. Her passion is vision therapy and she loves helping her patients to develop their visual skills and improve their lives.

The Hidden Cost of Having a Baby Adrenal dysfunction in new mothers H

aving a baby is a beautiful and natural thing. The ability to create an entire human being and bring it safely into this world is absolutely amazing. However, we tend to forget that this nine-month process is highly demanding on the mother’s physiology. During pregnancy, the fetus takes all the nutrients it needs in order to fully develop. If the mom’s reserves of certain nutrients are low, then she is left with nutrient deficiencies after delivery. This is why it is so important to prepare the body for pregnancy and to take appropriate, wellabsorbed supplements during this process.

After delivery, the first few months can be quite stressful for the new mom, especially if this is her first child. Sleep deprivation, stress about the health and well-being of the baby and anxiety regarding unexplained cries of her child require a lot from her adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are also known as the stress glands. They sit on top of the kidneys like little hats and are responsible for secreting the three major stress hormones: adrenalin, norepinephrine and cortisol. Adrenaline is the well-known fight-or-flight hormone that alerts our body to a stressful situation. Norepinephrine is secreted along with adrenaline to help us focus on the tasks needed to deal with the stressful situation. Cortisol is the more long-term stress hormone. During short-term stress, cortisol can be lifesaving because it helps our body regulate fluids and blood pressure while also regulating less important functions such as immunity and digestion. However, longterm secretion of cortisol caused by chronic stress can have serious health problems. Too much cortisol can eventually suppress the immune system, elevate blood pressure and blood sugar levels, decrease libido, trigger acne, contribute to weight gain and more. If the stress lasts more than a few months, the adrenal glands will go from a state of hyperadrenalism to adrenal fatigue and

maybe even to adrenal exhaustion, otherwise known as a burnout.

Having a newborn is definitely stressful and can contribute to chronic release of cortisol. During this period, the adrenal glands need certain nutrients in order to keep up with cortisol demand, primarily vitamin C, vitamin B5, magnesium and essential fatty acids, as well as others. Here are a few stress management tips to help you to prevent your adrenal glands from crashing.

"After delivery, the first few months can be quite stressful for the new mom." Nutrition Healthy nutrition is key for providing the nutrients the adrenal glands need. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to get sufficient amounts of vitamin C and magnesium. You also need a large amount of good fats from nuts, avocado, fish and oils like olive, coconut, sesame and flax. Whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat, spelt and kamut provide a good range of the B vitamins, but the best sources of vitamin B5 are shiitake and cremini mushrooms, sweet potatoes and broccoli. At the same time, reduce all sources of refined sugar, since it can contribute to immune system problems and weight gain.

negative impact. It also helps you to burn a few calories and therefore prevent weight gain. Supplements Finally, a little nutrient boost may not be a bad idea. However, before buying anything off the shelf, I strongly recommend consulting with a naturopathic doctor to find out what is appropriate for you based on your health history and current situation. Remember that a happy, healthy mommy often means a happy, healthy baby. Taking care of your body will make it easier for you to take care of the rest of your family. Anouk Chaumont, ND, graduated from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and practices in Grande Prairie at Anodyne Chiropractic and Sports Therapy. She helps people with a wide variety of conditions, from acute infections to chronic disease, and she is passionate about whole family health.

Sleep Sleep deprivation can be a big problem for new mothers and can further aggravate the symptoms linked to adrenal dysfunction. Consequently, take a nap as your baby does to recharge your batteries. If you’re breastfeeding, consider pumping some of your breast milk and having your partner take care of some of the nighttime feedings to allow you to get a few more hours of much-needed uninterrupted sleep. Exercise Exercise is a great way to manage stress since the muscle contractions help your body to eliminate excess cortisol and reduce its Fall 2014 l GUIDED SYNERGY 11

Cutting Loose! Letting go of the ties that bind us A t various points in our lives, our relationships with others have to change. Sometimes this is for positive reasons. At other times, it’s because we realize that the relationships are unhealthy.

As new mothers, we build a wonderful bonding relationship with our new baby. At the same time, our priorities shift and some of our other relationships may change. This is not good or bad—it just is—but it can be difficult. Our partner, older children or friends from our pre-parent days feel the shift in our energetic connection and may feel abandoned. We can have connections with multiple people at once, but we need them to be healthy. Through self-awareness, we may realize that certain relationships are unhealthy for us. I believe we all go through periods when someone takes up more of our time than we would like. Neighbours, friends or family members might drop by, phone often or make plans for us without asking. Some individuals take up too much space in our brain. We replay conversations over and over in our minds, never coming to any conclusion. All this does is make us feel bad or inadequate or question ourselves. The process tires us—it is very debilitating energy. When our boundaries are crossed, we put up our defenses and do one of two things:

12 www.guidedsynergy.ca

retreat or rebel. Some of us are taught from birth to have weak boundaries. How many mothers put everyone else ahead of themselves? We want to be loved and needed, but over time we may become resentful, and the stories in our minds start. We may decide that we need to abandon a relationship. In other cases, we simply need to step back. What makes it difficult for both parties in either of these scenarios is that a cord connects us, and that cord may hold dysfunction. We need to find a way to cut that cord. For example, my daughter recently graduated from high school and is now getting ready to head off to university. Our relationship needs to change, but the cord that connects us keeps us stuck in our old habits. If one of us is not quite ready for the change, well, that is where the struggle lies. Say she is ready for the change and I am not. I’ll think about her often and may overstep her boundaries. She will get frustrated with me verbally, emotionally and mentally because she can still feel a connection that is stronger than she prefers. On an energetic level, we can cut the cords. Cutting cords helps alleviate relationship issues into something healthier for both of you. It helps you release all your negative thoughts, letting you shift your relationship into something new or release the relationship entirely.

M om& Baby

Close your eyes and visualize cords—or wires, silver strings, ropes or branches— attaching you to the individual you are thinking about. They can be anywhere on your body, front or back. Visualize using whatever means necessary to cut these cords: scissors, a hedge trimmer or, if necessary, a chainsaw! Embrace the release you feel. Now, visualize using a salve where the cord was cut, much like what you would use on a tree’s wound to heal it. Apply the cream or seal the wound with white light on both ends. Take a deep breath and relax into the newness of the freedom this exercise offers you. You will find that your mind is less cluttered. You may find that you breathe more deeply. Occasionally, the individual you’ve released may still be looking for the old relationship. If this happens, repeat the exercise several times. Some relationships can be more difficult to transform than others. Cut yourself loose and see what happens! Cloth Diapering Made Easy Five tips to get you started T hinking about cloth diapering your baby? Is your head swimming with all the different types of diapers available? Are you confused about how to wash them yourself? Here are five simple things you need to know to use cloth diapers successfully with your little one. 1. Keep it simple. Stick to one type, either pocket diapers or, better yet, all-in-one diapers. Pocket diapers have an absorbent insert that you stuff into a pocket in the waterproof outer shell. All the absorbent layers of all-in-ones are sewn together with the waterproof shell, creating a diaper that is one piece. These two are the easiest types to use, and having a streamlined stash makes those 2:00 a.m. diaper changes easier to manage for moms and dads. Blueberry Simplex all-in-ones or Rumparooz pocket diapers are excellent choices, and they adjust to increase in size as your baby grows, all the way to potty learning. Once you’ve been diapering for a while, if you feel adventurous you could try prefolds, flats or other styles. 2. Plan on having twenty-five to thirty diapers. Babies go through about ten diapers a day in the beginning, so a larger stash gives you enough diapers to go two days between washings without worrying about running out. After six months of age, you’ll need

sixteen to twenty diapers in your rotation. You’ll also need a large wet-bag to store those soiled diapers until wash day. 3. Master the art of the diaper change. Cloth diapers are easy to change. Really. After you take the diaper off, use a cloth wipe moistened with either plain water or a pre-made bum spray to clean your baby. Knock any solids from the diaper into the toilet where they’re meant to be and leave the rest to your washing machine. Your machine can handle it, I promise. Toss the diaper and the cloth wipe into your waterproof wet-bag until wash day. No diaper dunking, no diaper pails and no need to touch any more poo than with a disposable. 4. Washing is as easy as 1-2-3. Empty those diapers right into the washing machine. Throw the wet-bag in too, and then follow these three easy steps: • Rinse with no detergent. • Wash on hot with any good-quality, residue-free detergent (one that doesn’t contain synthetic fabric softener). • Rinse again, and you’re done. Toss it all in the dryer, just like any other laundry, and your diapers are ready to be put on your baby’s bum again. They’re just like clothes after all—there’s nothing scary about diapers. Just remember,

don’t use dryer sheets or petroleum-based rash creams. They’ll cause repelling and no one wants diapers to repel pee!

"They're just like clothes after all -- there's nothing scary about diapers." 5. Realize it’s a worthwhile investment. The upfront investment of cloth diapers often turns people away. Four hundred dollars or more for a set of diapers might seem steep, but remember that you’ll be saving at least 3,000 plastic disposable diapers from the landfill and keeping close to $2,000 in your pocket (think college fund) while maintaining your baby’s health in a more natural way. Plus, if you choose good-quality diapers, they can be used again for future babies. So, save up for your stash of adorable, fluffy cloth diapers, spread the purchase over your nine months of pregnancy or ask for cloth diapers for your baby shower. You’ll be glad you did. Stephanie Planchak is the owner of Cloth Diaper Kids, a web-based cloth diaper specialty retailer in Grande Prairie and Sherwood Park, Alberta. A mother of three, she holds a business degree from the University of Alberta and runs her business from home between diaper changes.

Mommy Me-Time Spa support before, during and after pregnancy P

regnancy is a beautiful and exciting time in any woman’s life. But it is a demanding time as well. The miracle of a new baby growing and developing puts your body through the paces, and for that very reason it is of utmost importance to dedicate time to your physical and emotional wellbeing. No longer considered a luxury, spas promote health and well-being. They are a great resource when trying to conceive, during pregnancy and as part of postnatal care. Relaxing the body through massage therapy rebalances hormones and boosts the immune system. There is nothing more powerful than the human touch, and in the days leading up to conception the body can only benefit from being in a relaxed state. Spas offer a wide variety of therapies complementing pregnancy. During massage, muscles are manipulated to increase flexibility, manage pain and enhance posture and balance, helping your body cope with the weight of your growing baby. Massage therapy moisturizes the skin and improves elasticity, minimizing the formation of scar tissue and allowing your body to bounce back more easily. Comfort during massage therapy is key so that your body can release tension and encourage the numerous benefits to take effect. Pregnancy massage pillows offered at some spas let you lie on your tummy while receiving beautiful, customized body rituals that treat your achy lower back, release tight hips and allow you to drift away on a cloud of happiness. Breakouts are common as your body adjusts to the surge of hormones during pregnancy. Your skin may become excessively oily or excessively dry. A facial therapist can assess the condition of your skin and recommend treatment to

compensate for the over- or underproduction of oils. A skin-care professional can also help with discoloration that may arise from pregnancy. Melasma, also known as the mask of pregnancy, is a darkening of the skin caused by the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Reduce the possibility of this stubborn type of pigmentation by applying sunscreen daily in conjunction with your regular skin-care routine and by consulting a skin expert. Let’s not forget those areas that become hard or impossible to reach as your belly grows, such as your feet. Pedicures keep cuticles and heels healthy, while massage eases muscles and aids drainage, helping your feet look and feel less swollen. Your pedicurist can also alert you to any disorder that might occur during the later stages of pregnancy, which you might not be aware of because you can’t reach as far as you used to. Motherhood can be challenging and spas are invaluable for busy moms. Express therapies allow you to address your basic concerns, or you can opt for a full-day package to relax, unwind and rebalance. Some spas have membership options that allow you to schedule time for yourself on a regular basis, compelling you to commit and attend to your basic needs. Finding a moment of privacy can be a daunting task for mothers, and having a sanctuary to retreat to allows you to recharge. Spa time should extend beyond the spa and into the comfort of your home. Indulge with specialized body care that suits your needs. Gently exfoliating your growing and changing belly relieves dry and itchy skin. Nourishing your body with a luxurious treatment after a shower or bath allows for optimal absorption of much-needed nutrients. Oils and creams melt into warm, damp skin, increasing elasticity and minimizing the formation of stretch marks. Whether you are thinking about entering the world of motherhood, are pregnant or are already a devoted mother, you should be celebrated for your beauty and strength. We women tend to push our needs aside and

put others first, compromising our health and well-being. In the words of Leah Podollan, L Spa founder and multitasking mother of two, “Spa-ing should be a healthy habit, not just a luxury earmarked for once a year.” Colleen Nunes is the spa director at The L Spa and Wellness Centre. Originally from South Africa, she is internationally accredited as an esthetician, massage therapist and complementary therapist. With her knowledge and her background as a lecturer at a health and skin-care academy, she has become a highly respected trainer, mentor and leader within the spa community. CELEBRATING SUCCESS Soulful journey of an entrepreneur 16 www.guidedsynergy.ca

BY DAMIEN WOOD PHOTOS BY BOLLER MEDIA PRODUCTIONS

J

"

ust breathe,” Sandi Stetson says. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, stop and breathe. However busy your day is, however big and bad the stresses may seem, take a moment. Maybe even ten. Close your eyes. Now, take a few breaths, slow and deep. Centre yourself.

Because you’re never that busy. And it’s never quite as big or as bad as it seems. “Even if I only have one minute or thirty seconds, good breathing and breathing exercises really help me. They just help me to keep my energy in check. I find it better if I manage my energy early on as opposed to letting it get too elevated,” she says. “I go for lots of walks. If I’m in the middle of a hectic day, I have a little route that takes me ten minutes. Sometimes, no matter how pressing things are, I’ve just got to get out of my office. I’ll go for ten minutes and I’ll just really focus on good breathing.” The founder and owner of Edmonton-based Verve Marketing and Communications Inc. and the brain behind the Grande Prairie Woman’s Show says that this is how she starts every day as well—a few minutes of meditation gets her into the world in the right headspace to beat the million-and-one things that a day in the life of Sandi Stetson normally consists of. “If you let yourself get excited, that’s when things can really go wrong,” she says. Strong visualization skills also help. And, when everything is done and it’s all over except for the energy, a good cry—be it a happy cry or a sad one—is a form of release she knows a thing or two about. Sometimes you just have to let the tears flow, she says. That’s part of managing your energy too. For twenty years now, Stetson has hosted the Grande Prairie Woman’s Show, and her upcoming show will be her biggest ever, with double the usual capacity. She generally hosts two each year in the northern city to keep up with the demand. Stetson’s work doesn’t begin or end with the trade show itself. It takes months of preparation and year-round planning. For many years, she ran the show while raising her son, Jordan, on her own. He is now a university graduate of whom she is very proud. At times, Stetson has run the trade show while also holding down a “real” job or while running her company’s other endeavors, contracting her services to Big Valley Jamboree and Edmonton’s International BeerFest. She found her hectic work schedule challenging at times and her health began to show its effects. “When you’re in something, you just do it. What other choice do you have?” she says. Then, six years ago, Stetson discovered yoga. She credits her practice with a transformation in her life and how she approaches it. Yoga has brought her on a direct path with the ghosts of her past so she can accept and move beyond them into the present and create a more balanced life. And she’s learned to work less. She knows now that her workwork-work mentality is one of her coping mechanisms for a deep emotional scar, which yoga has helped her to confront.

“When I started yoga—probably after my fourth or fifth class—I was shaking. Teachers were supportive and encouraged me as I learned to be in my body again.” She says, “Yoga has just opened up a part of me that I had kept closed, locked up and dormant for years and years. When I started yoga it was pretty tough, but once I opened up, I had no choice but to keep going and to keep getting through it.” The truth is this is how she’s wanted to live, as an entrepreneur with the freedom to create her own life. She believes knowing how to centre herself would have helped in the beginning, but she figures everything she’s gone through has been a necessary part of her journey. She recalls a conversation she had with her best friend, in 1996 or 1997, not long after she’d taken one of those “real” jobs on top of running her trade show and had quickly discovered she despised it. Together, the pair discussed what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives, and what she came up with is more or less what she still does today. It came down to three questions, she says. What were her skills and her attributes? What did she love to do? What was her gift to the world? “For me, I’m packaging all of those things into organizing trade shows and facilitating courses. I want to support other people to move forward in their lives in whatever capacity they have,” she says. “I didn’t want to go back to doing something I didn’t like, and I sacrificed a lot of things so that I could make a good, conscious choice on something that I would be content with.” Stetson says Grande Prairie feels like home for her. Fresh out of the University of Alberta in 1985, with a bachelor’s degree in physical education under her belt, she was hired to set up the new Be Fit for Life Centre at the Grande Prairie Regional College. She moved to Red Deer in 1992 but was back again briefly in 1996 before moving permanently to Edmonton, where she now resides. In between her stays in Grande Prairie, Stetson started the trade show known today as the Grande Prairie Woman’s Show. Although she was born in Edmonton and raised in Vermillion, Stetson says she grew up during her time in Grande Prairie. “I had to create my own reputation and identity and create who I was,” she says. “In all the other places I lived, you sort of evolve into it based on your family or based on what field you are in. In Grande Prairie, I went up there and I didn’t know anybody.” Stetson shares what she has learned in more than twenty years in business by coaching, teaching and event planning, and she is certified as a lead auditor through Quality Management International, Inc. She holds the Distinguished Toastmaster designation from Toastmasters International for speaking, leadership and communications. Her natural humor, down-to-earth attitude and real-life business experience have made her a sought-after facilitator. A big believer in supporting her community and the province that has provided her with so much, Stetson has given back through years of service with organizations such as Big Sisters, Fierté Canada Pride, the United Way and the Woman’s Employment Entry/Reentry Program in Red Deer. Since 2000, she has played a vital role in helping fellow entrepreneurs turn their business dreams into reality, Fall 2014 l GUIDED SYNERGY 17

7 Secrets of High-Performance People Apply them to your own life and work M

ost of us look at highperformance people and wonder how we can get there in our own lives. Highperformance people often accomplish more things, experience more visibility, earn more money and enjoy more abundance. They nail it, and they have fun doing it! You and I can do everything highperformance people do if we simply understand what they are doing and why they are doing it and if we make consistent choices. Here are seven secrets of highperformance people that you’ll want to add into your life and work, if you haven’t already. 1. They have a clear focus on a big picture. If you don’t have a clear goal or desire, how will you know when you’ve gotten there? High-performance people have a clear vision of where they want to go and are guided in their daily lives by the sense that they know exactly who they are, what they want to do and how they want to do it. This big picture keeps them on track. 2. They have positive mental frameworks. High-performance people have incredibly positive mental frameworks. They aren’t pessimistic, judgmental, negative or critical. They understand that their attitude determines their altitude, so they keep their attitude elevated. They keep in mind that obstacles can be overcome, problems can be solved, adversity can be an opening, setbacks are temporary and opportunities are as limitless as they choose. 3. They are creators. High-performance people understand intuitively that before something manifests in the real world, it gestates in the mental world of vision and possibility. They don’t wait for things to come to them or for someone to give something to them. Instead, they use their imagination to create, dream, produce and build. They are proactive, take 20 www.guidedsynergy.ca

initiative and get it done! And as they move forward, in authenticity and alignment, they attract all the abundance and fullness that they need. 4. They take time for self-care.

High-performance people take time for themselves. In the midst of their dreaming and doing, planning and processing, they understand the priority of self-care. Energy and passion are the stuff of life, resilience and success. High-performance people monitor their personal energy levels, and they do what it takes to regularly refill their tank so that they always have abundance to share. Practicing everything from regular sleep to nutrition, exercise, meditation, affirmations, visualization, journaling and spending time with quality people, they take the time they need to care for themselves. 5. They don’t procrastinate. High-performance people know what it is to engage the uncomfortable, the foreign and the tasks they don’t like, and they don’t keep putting them off. Not everything we need to do to achieve our dreams is fun, but high-performance people are able to focus on what has to get done and do it, even when it’s disagreeable. They aren’t easily knocked off course by the unpleasant or low-profile roles we all must fulfill to achieve the big picture and have long-term success. 6. They partner. High-performance people know they can’t do everything themselves. They understand their own limitations and appreciate the strengths and contributions of others. They would far rather move forward with a team than move forward alone. They have an eye for talent and capacity and are good at attracting the right people to their teams and fitting them into the right roles. Highperformance people are able to foster great relationships and build teams that can help them achieve what they want even faster. 7. They are resilient. High-performance people understand resilience. Like the rest of us, they face obstacles and struggles, setbacks and failures. But they are tenacious, sticking to their dreams and goals as long as they need to in

order to get where they want to go. They are great at bouncing back, taking a punch and keeping on keeping on.

"High-performance people know what it is to engage the uncomfortable." One final thought: Becoming a highperformance person is within everyone’s grasp. Personal growth and professional development are processes based on one simple principle: Our inputs define our outputs. When we invest in our own personal growth and professional development, we tap into the power of process and grow exponentially. The world needs more high-performance people. Go out there and become a highperformance person, because we all need you to! But as you dream, ensure that you start strong so that you can finish strong. “On a weekend trip to Edmonton, my family went to a vegan restaurant. I love these types of restaurants because they’re dairy-free, and for me, no dairy means no headaches, fogginess, fatigue or acne. We had a ‘cheesy,’ chipotle-style dip that we all loved. I knew I had to try to replicate it at home. “Here is my version. Try this vegan dip with fresh veggies or whole-grain crackers or on top of your favourite burger.”

Hot and Spicy “Cheesy” Dip Serves 8 INGREDIENTS 2 cups raw, organic, unsalted cashews 2 cloves garlic 1 red pepper 1 small jalapeño pepper (seeds removed) ¼ cup nutritional yeast (such as Bob’s Red Mill brand) 2 tablespoons miso paste (found in the cooler in the health food store) Sea salt to taste 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 to 2 tablespoons water DIRECTIONS Soak the cashews overnight, or for a couple hours if using boiling water, to soften. When the cashews are ready, add them with the rest of the ingredients to a high-powered blender with a tamper or to a food processor. Blend well. You will need to scrape the sides often. If using a blender, it takes a while to mix. Notes • The dip should be very smooth. • Feel free to add more or less jalapeño or garlic. • The dip is best chilled and served the next day. – Recipe by Kellie Timmins, of Plank Health Kellie is an experienced wellness professional trained in diet, lifestyle and wellness coaching. Create New Life Renewal and growth this autumn W

elcome to fall, the autumnal equinox, a time of equal day and night and the gateway to the season of darkness. The light of our soul grows brighter as the hours of daylight shorten. It guides our way as we search for greater levels of realization and actualization.

This fall is an agreeable transition for the most part. Mercury’s retrograde in early October will draw our attention back to things that have gone before to uncover matters of value or importance. We will learn what is meant to be learned. Simultaneously, we will experience the rarefying influences of a lunar and a solar eclipse. The lunar eclipse on October 8 will be life-changing, very transitional and purposeful. We will be inspired. Do not let other people interfere with what is envisioned. The solar eclipse of October 23 is one of renewal, growth and interrelatedness. Our knowledge will be eclipsed by a new reality that is easily grasped. Confidence will lead the way. It will unfold. Reaching back to the configurations of 2010 that brought drastic, wide-scale change, we have been surviving one of the most aggressive planetary alignments of our history. It has been contesting us since 2012. We will once again feel the strength of this tension after the tripwire is pulled setting us

up for a month of metamorphic transition from November 26 to December 27. We will need to be in the slipstream of our evolutionary shift by October 26, because the period from November 10 to 12 will trigger this psychic tsunami. Then we will be on the home stretch, quickly moving toward the celebration of a final alignment from March 11 to 28, 2015. This is a process of creating a new life. Within the universe, planetary birth is a violent experience. Correspondingly, with the Earth’s rebirth we have experienced an increase in violence involving humans, weather and geological change. It happens concurrently; the good personal empowerment and the bad power struggle run parallel. It is an awesome and shocking experience. Disassemble wherever necessary to prepare for reassembling. We can and we will rebuild. Onwards and upwards.

In mid-December we can expect a bit of a fuss that lacks predictability. We may have to retire to our personal inner battleground to reconcile ourselves, and this can cause

How Do We Ask for Help from Archangels? It's easier than you think D

ivine connection is possible for anyone, including you! First it is important to understand the basic concept of archangel vibration. The archangels are nondenominational; therefore, each of us can have a different belief system and still be connected to divine vibration. The archangels are a direct link to Higher Power, whether you choose to call this Higher Power, God(s), Creator or another name. All are considered equal. Archangel Michael states, “Our energy presents as divine assistance, not replacement of Higher Power. Continue to pray or ask for intervention and we can assist as guided to do so by Higher Power.” The angelic realm is completely different than the Earth realm—it doesn’t have the formal concepts of time and space that we have created. The archangels’ energy has no physical form to hold them in one place at a time; they can be anywhere on Earth at each moment. Archangel Michael has often told me that if every person on Earth asked for his

assistance at the same time, he could be there for all of us! When I wanted more clarification about how they could be with us all at the same time, Archangel Michael stated, “My children, your conscious mind and ego want proof of our existence. This causes confusion and conflict within your realm of understanding. Trust in your divine knowing; ask and let it be.” There is nothing too trivial to ask assistance with. There is no need to think that you can’t ask because other people may need more help than you do. My Angel Team is always with me to support me. The more I ask for assistance, the happier my team is to be of service. Ask and then be open to accept or receive guidance. Archangels and guardian angels have no ego. Therefore, all the guidance we receive through the angels is only love and light vibration. There is no fear energy from angels. Fear comes from ego. The only fear we may experience when following guidance

from our angels is our fear of change. When going through job or career changes, moves, relationship changes or health changes, it is natural to feel some fear. Other types of fear come from ego. How do we ask for assistance from the archangels? Ask and let go. Once you ask, all is set in motion as divinely guided. There is no ceremony involved. You can ask by thinking the thought or saying it out loud. You can pray or meditate. No specific method is needed for the archangels to hear you. Asking is the key because we all have free will and the divine is unable to assist us unless we ask. Cindy Smith is an Angel Empowerment Practitioner™ instructor. Dreams Guide Our Destiny Listen to your dreams I

t surprises me when people say they don’t dream or that they don’t pay their dreams much mind. I’ve been guided by my dreams most of my life. Like most people, I’ve had perhaps a dozen really big dreams—dreams that told me who I was and would become, what I needed to change and how to do that for the best outcome. Like an honest, very wise best friend who is immensely insightful and creative, my dreaming mind has never led me astray. At almost sixty years old I’m a happy woman, doing work I love, with a life partner who is the love of my life and living in an environment I treasure. I have my dreaming mind to thank for most of it.

It takes a lot of practice and study to learn how to interpret a dream’s meanings. Dreams speak to us in a visual language of symbols. Our soul, acting as the director, set designer, casting agent and action planner, rolls out several plays for us each night. It’s often difficult to recognize ourselves in dreams, because typically we identify with the dream ego, who is the observer or responder. Sometimes we are participating in the action but we don’t see ourselves; we only feel the action we are taking in response to a stimulus. I’ve had many dreams about being in a play. Often I’m walking a tightrope high above the stage, beyond where the audience can see. Like a behind-the-scenes acrobat, I dash across the tightrope to make sure the objects of the set are lowered at the right moment in

the production. Whenever I have this dream, I know my soul is describing my dream interpretation process. It’s telling me, “You are behind the scenes in your interpretation of your dreams and you’re too removed, elevated, skirting the issues. Get down on the stage and participate with the other characters in the play!” After this dream, I revisit my past interpretations with a good dose of humility. Some of my dreams have come true. Often I don’t know the dream I’m having is clairvoyant until the event takes place. Dreaming the future can prepare us for an event. We might dream of a loved one passing, as I did with my grandmother. I woke up distraught and rushed to call her to make sure she was okay. She was fine. I didn’t tell her about my dream. About two years later she died. Because I had dreamed this upsetting event, I felt slightly more prepared to deal with her death when it happened. Since I had this dream at the age of twelve, I’ve had many dreams of those who passed shortly after. I couldn’t say these were clairvoyant necessarily, because we are all going to pass on, but they did feel like gentle reminders of what soon would happen. Having facilitated many dream study groups, I find them to be the most insightful approach to dreamwork. Denial and temptations to sugarcoat are harder to sustain in a group. The group offers a variety of possibilities in determining our dream’s meaning, and listening to others work through their dreams’ guidance messages can be incredibly moving and enlightening. We soon discover that our dreams help not only us, but others as well. I can’t stress

enough how rewarding and valuable this experience is. There are important boundaries to establish, however, before launching a dream study group. Issues such as trust, confidentiality, honour and respect must be firmly established. Set a time frame and adhere to it. Two hours a week in the same room over ten weeks seems to work best. At ten weeks, members have the option to continue or move on and others may enter the group. Understanding the meaning of the symbols that make up the language of dreams is your first and challenging task. Symbols have both universal and personal meaning. For example, a book symbolizes knowledge and education but, depending upon the book, setting, action and characters in the particular dream, an infinitely deeper meaning, personal to you, will be revealed. Keeping your own dream symbol dictionary can help you. I hope you’ve been inspired to examine your dreams more closely. If you’ve paid little attention to your dreams in the past, you will be profoundly rewarded for the energy and time you invest in this selfawareness program. In my dream group sessions, everyone leaves with something special to carry into their waking lives. Whether it’s a deepened spiritual practice or simply deciding to live in a more healthful fashion, everyone receives a gift of transformation. A Better Approach to Financial Planning The healthy way to financial independence A s the adage says, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will do.”

When I first meet with a family about serving them, I ask to see their current financial and investment plans. In my twenty years of professional experience, I’ve encountered only a handful of people who have done thorough planning work before we’ve met. Most are adrift, wondering if they’re going to have enough, without necessarily knowing what “enough” is. Even if they have more than enough for their basic needs, most are still quite unaware of where they stand financially.

"Your core values, beliefs and priorities are the principles that lead to your life goals." It’s common for people to avoid thorough financial planning. The reasons are many: They don’t have enough time, it feels like work, it triggers feelings of fear around money or they feel “less than” because they don’t understand the terminology. Many people are unwilling to confront the reality of their financial situation because it might necessitate changing unhealthy or wasteful habits—they might have to admit they’ve been wrong! These blocks serve to push the planning process further down the road, leading to another adage: “People don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan.” The investment industry, which is supposed to help people with their finances, hasn’t

helped as much as it should. On the whole, it has let down the broader public by keeping the process unnecessarily complex—very left brained, masculine, head focused and often frenetic. The TV ads run by the big financial companies are very soft and emotive, focused on family, leisure and achieving the typical aspirational goals, but that’s where it stops. Once you’re in the door, it gets technical, confusing and sometimes overwhelming. All too often, fear is used to motivate clients to take action. Can you imagine setting an intention around fear-based concepts that you don’t fully understand? While it may be controversial to say so, my view is that most advisors are ill equipped to approach financial planning and wealth management from a genuinely holistic, values-driven, client-centered perspective. Most advisors and clients are happy to follow the path of least resistance, steering clear of the “soft” issues because it’s just emotionally easier not to go there. Who wants to wade into a swampland of emotions if they can avoid it?

Those advisors who do have the skills and the willingness to engage in the challenging but meaningful conversations needed to work in a more holistic way face a limiting factor: It requires precious time. Many large firms have revenue quotas, so advisors who want to work differently are forced to focus on generating revenue just to keep their jobs. This is a harsh reality that big firms keep as quiet as possible. So, how can financial planning and investing actually be fun, inspiring and effective? It’s a positive experience when it’s driven by the people, things, causes and ideas that are meaningful to you and your family. Your core values, beliefs and priorities are the principles that lead to your life goals. Life goals drive the actions steps that help you

fulfill your personal mission and unique sense of purpose. Setting a clear intention and staying committed to a set of positive financial behaviours is much easier and longer lasting when the outcomes resonate with your deepest loving beliefs. Another major factor is complexity. The simpler the process is, the more likely you are to actually get started, stay engaged during the boring parts and follow through with meaningful actions. When you boil it down to its essence, financial planning and wealth management involve three things: (1) helping you clarify and update your life goals, (2) finding the right people and tools to help you achieve your life goals, and (3) keeping you on track towards achieving them. Translating qualitative concepts like core values into a planning framework requires specialized integration skills—balancing the masculine and the feminine—but it can be done if you are committed to the process, are realistic in your goals and can communicate openly with an advisor who really gets you. We all know at one level or another that the universe is a co-creative paradigm, so we need to actually participate with genuine intention and focused actions. Regardless of where you sit financially, I encourage you to get down to the serious business of having fun and getting inspired and motivated to take healthy, loving actions towards financial independence.
