publisher's message “ Love is to the heart what summer is to the farmer's year it brings to harvest all the loveliest flowers of the soul." - Author unknown

Summer Soultime S

ummer is finally here! The season can be oh-so-short and the weather a little unpredictable, so it’s important to make the most of it. Take a fun road trip, relax at the beach, explore one of our beautiful national parks or have a backyard barbecue! I love how summer brings all my senses alive: the smell of fresh-cut grass, the sounds of birds singing and a gentle summer rain on the rooftop, the sight of flower beds bursting with colour and the taste of cool lemonade as I sit on my back deck, feeling the warmth of the sun on my face. Summer can be an active time full of outdoor activities, weekend gatherings and family fun; for others it’s a time to retreat and slow things down. No matter what your plans are, make sure you have lots of soultime in your summer and the whole year through! If you love to travel and find yourself returning to certain locations, Cindy Smith’s

article, “Vibrational Shifts in Ireland,” might explain why; as she indicates, “different areas on Mother Earth hold a different vibration.” For the latest in summer health trends, enjoy our article from the Canadian Health Food Association, “Top 5 Natural Health Trends for Summer 2014.” For our foodies, we have a fantastic article, “Ecotourism and the Culinary Arts,” about the sustainable and ethical practices in the restaurant industry, submitted by award-winning chef David Flegel of the Hyatt Regency Calgary. Our cover story for each issue features a business owner or natural health practitioner who has personal life experience, an opinion or a story we feel would interest our readers. In this issue, we feature Kameron Tarry, directing manager of a family-owned business called Avena Originals in Red Deer, Alberta. Kameron’s story is truly inspirational and an example of what happens when a real-life situation causes a shift in one’s thinking. As journalist Damien Wood writes, “He figured his parents were selling ‘soup and glue,’ or snake oil and witch potions, to the masses. That was before everything changed.” Enjoy his featured article on page 16.

Top 5 Natural Health Trends for Summer 2014 Leading experts reveal what's hot for the season T

he Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) has announced the top five trends Canadians should look for this summer at their local health food store. Summer is around the corner and Canadians are eager for the inside scoop on this summer’s new, effective ways to stay cool, hydrated and healthy naturally. Throughout the spring, CHFA reached out to top natural health experts across Canada to gather their insights on the many exciting trends in natural health. “Summer heat and seasonal changes put new stresses on our body’s systems,” says CHFA president Helen Long. “Leading experts helped us find new, exciting, natural solutions that we are pleased to share with Canadians across the country to help them get the most out of summer.” Here are the top five trends: Natural Hydration The first choice for summer 2014 hydration is a new beverage that’s close to home: maple water. Spring is maple syrup season, when maple farmers across the country tap their trees and boil down the sap to make maple syrup. What many Canadians do not know is that, in its purest form, maple sap is an effective summer hydrator. Filled with minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and manganese, this low-calorie beverage can provide energy without spiking your blood sugar. Other natural healthy alternatives include coconut water and kombucha, or you can make your own fruitinfused water to stay hydrated this season. Natural Skin Care Opting for a sunscreen that lists zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as ingredients is a must this summer, especially when choosing one for your kids. When applied, these metals lay on the surface of the skin without being absorbed and reflect potentially damaging UVA and UVB rays. For aftersun protection, the focus is on aloe vera and vitamin E creams, as both are excellent natural options to help soothe the pain caused by sunburns. Keeping your body’s internal defenses stocked with antioxidant 10 www.guidedsynergy.ca

supplements like carotenoids, vitamin C and vitamin E can also help to protect your skin against sun damage. Ultimate Summer Supplements The hottest supplements to watch for on the shelves of your local natural health retailer this summer include omega-3s and astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is naturally derived from a pink carotenoid antioxidant found in algae. According to holistic pharmacist Sherry Torkos, “Astaxanthin has been clinically studied for helping to protect against wrinkles, redness and UV damage.” Natural health experts have also raved about antioxidant vitamins C and E, both of which help your body respond to the harsh effects of UV radiation resulting from sun exposure. If you are currently on medications or taking other natural health products, speak with your health-care practitioner about which supplements are right for you. (See the sidebar for more on supplements.)

"Summer heat and seasonal changes put new stresses on our body's systems." Label Literacy Canadians are increasingly demanding simple, transparent labelling. “Many manufacturers are leading the way and saying ‘We believe in truth in labeling and we are going to selfdeclare what all the ingredients are in the product,’” says Matthew James, chair of CHFA’s board of directors and president of Purity Life Health Products LP. Canadians should

look out for labels like the Canada Organic symbol, which tells you at a glance that the ingredients used are obtained from certified organic sources. Summer Superfoods for Natural Health “This summer’s trendiest superfood is going to be watermelon,” says nutrition journalist and gluten-free expert Kathy Smart. “It is extremely hydrating and provides a lot of important minerals. Expect to see it in people’s water bottles and salads and frozen into popsicles.” Watermelon is also a great source of lycopene, a potent antioxidant pigment that gives watermelon its rich colour, with a growing list of benefits from prostate to skin health. Other delicious and healthy summer superfoods range from seaweed snacks and healthy bars to anything and everything coconut. For the full details on the top five natural health trends for summer, Canadians should visit their local health food store or chfa.ca. CHFA is Canada’s largest national trade association dedicated to the natural health and organic products industry. It represents manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and importers of natural and organic products. These can include foods, vitamin and mineral supplements, herbal products, homeopathics, sports nutrition products, health and beauty aids and more.

Vibrational Shifts in Ireland Connecting physically and emotionally H

ave you ever had a physical or emotional reaction to a place you visit? Perhaps what you experienced was a vibrational shift. I have acknowledged such a vibration in the past when visiting locations in North America, including Emerald Lake, only a two-hour drive away from me, the Rockies, Sedona, Hawaii, and the Okanagan, all of which I consider examples of locations with energy vortexes. In March, I conducted a Celtic Angel Sacred Tour to Ireland. This trip solidified for me how different areas on Mother Earth hold a different vibration. My Angel Team (intuition) guided me to increase my understanding of how locations affect my physical being and can enhance my connection to the spiritual realm because of this vibration. My ability to feel the

12 www.guidedsynergy.ca

vibrational shift within my physical body became much stronger. Yes, we can all visit somewhere new and the beauty of the place will shift our vibration, perhaps in the simple fact that we feel joy and awe or wonder. Now, however, when I enter an energy vortex or location, I pay attention to what I feel: a change in heart rate or breathing, a lightness or heaviness within my physical body, how my emotions respond or whether my skin tingles with what I call angel bumps. I am in awe of how much awareness has become apparent for me when I enter certain locations. My Angel Team continues to encourage me to visit different locations on Mother Earth because my awareness to vibration increases, and in turn my clarity with my team is enhanced. Ireland and Europe have a great deal of ancient energy and sacred locations,

including stone circles, cathedrals, castles, ancient ruins and fairy forts, some of which we visited on our tour. Here in Canada, we are lucky to have the beauty of Mother Earth that we enjoy. The next time you visit somewhere special to you, pay attention to how your physical and emotional body react. Find your energy vortex—your special place—and connect. Walking in the beauty is meditation in itself. Cindy Smith is an Angel Empowerment Practitioner™ instructor. With a background in nursing and counseling and a master’s in Time Line Therapy, neurolinguistic programming and Huna training, she is a transformational teacher who empowers all to trust in their own connection with the angels and explore infinite possibilities. Stress Causes Cancer The significant connection between stress and cancer E

very day in my practice I see cancer patients who feel that there is a very strong emotional source to their cancer. Patients will often be able to directly connect the formation of their cancer with a stressful event in their life. This is not an imaginary connection; there are biological reasons why emotional stress can trigger the formation of cancer. Stress can cause cancer. It is important to point out that this is not a hypothetical concept. This statement is well supported by scientific evidence.1,2,3 The link between cancer and stress is well established and is not debated by the scientific community. Many people are not aware how significant this connection is and often, medical doctors, despite the body of evidence, disregard this connection. There are a number of different biological reasons why stress inhibits the immune system in its fight against cancer. Natural killer cells are essential in resisting the progression and metastatic spread of tumours once they have developed.4 It is well documented that the activity of these crucial cells decreases significantly with stress.5 In other words, the cells that patrol your body looking for abnormal cells are less active when you are under stress. A key component to the development of cancer is mutations in the DNA. A number of well-controlled studies have shown that cells are less efficient at repairing DNA damage when a patient is stressed. Patients who are more depressed show significantly poorer repair of damaged DNA compared to their less depressed counterparts.6 This is significant because the mutations that drive the initiation and development of cancer are not repaired as effectively in a patient under stressful conditions. In addition to the effects of stress on DNA repair, additional research has shown that apoptosis is inhibited by stress.7 When a cell begins to turn cancerous, it will undergo what is called programmed cell death (also known as apoptosis). In other words, when a cell begins to get too abnormal, it will 14 www.guidedsynergy.ca

commit suicide. This is one of the most fundamental defense mechanisms that our body has to fight the development of cancer. When this process is inhibited, clearly the risk for developing cancer is higher.

"When fighting cancer, it is important to use every tool at your disposal to increase the chances of a successful recovery." The good news is that you can help your body fight cancer by reducing stress and focusing your intentions on healing. One of the most comprehensive intervention studies in cancer research evaluated the effects of stress management techniques, such as relaxation, on cancer recurrence following removal of malignant melanoma.8 Not only did the relaxed group experience reduced psychological distress, they also had more active immune systems. A six-year followup of these patients showed a trend toward greater recurrence and higher mortality rates in the control group, compared to the relaxed group.9 The bottom line is that patients who focus on reducing stress and focusing their minds on healing not only have a better prognosis, they also have lower rates of developing cancer in the first place. Given what we know about the connection between immune function and stress, this conclusion should not be surprising. When fighting cancer, it is important to use every tool at your disposal to increase the chances of a successful recovery. The immune system must be strong to fight off any serious disease. Our minds can dramatically influence how our cells respond to stress and this is intimately connected to the function of the immune system. We all need to take control of our health and use this connection to our advantage. By reducing stress and focusing our minds on healing, we will live longer and happier lives.10 This is a powerful tool that we can all use to our advantage. Become selfempowered!

Kameron Tarry:

Health

Is a Matter of Choice Helping people understand their health BY DAMIEN WOOD PHOTOS BY EDEN PHOTOGRAPHY

K

ameron Tarry recalls one day in his graduating year; he walked into his home in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, shirt in hand, trying to beat the scorching heat. Inside his mother sat in front of the fire, wrapped in half a dozen blankets, shivering.

“We’re having more disease and more illness and at younger ages than any generation before us. Whatever we’re doing isn’t looking like it’s the right path—it’s not working. We should be getting fewer diseases; we should be living longer, healthier lives.”

Kathy Tarry was dying from a very progressive form of lupus. She had been for a while. The doctors said there was no hope. The prognosis for Kameron’s mom, he says, was “Go home and die.”

Today, believing those words, Kameron tries to help anyone going through what he did with his mom two decades ago. But back then, he figured his parents were selling “soup and glue,” or snake oil and witch potions, to the masses. That was before everything changed.

In that year, Kameron watched his mom grow so weak she couldn’t eat or walk. On more than one occasion, he watched her slowly crawl from one room to another on her elbows because she couldn’t stand up and she was the stubborn sort.

Kathy Tarry was supposed to die. Everyone was preparing for the day that inevitability would come. It never did. Kathy and Mel figured out that what was going on was less about the lupus and more about what was causing the lupus.

She bled from head to toe. She seeped uric acid. The woman he knew was quickly slipping away, replaced by an increasingly fragile shell.

“Her kidneys were shutting down because they were overloaded with toxicity, with certain chemicals. When my mother was growing up, DDT was commonly used as a pesticide. Her mother didn’t know any better and so DDT was sprayed all over the house and the windowsills. Today it’s a banned substance.”

“We were planning her funeral,” Kameron says now, almost 20 years later. “I remember what it was like for me to be hopeless and desperate and succumbing to the idea that Mom’s going to be gone real soon. That’s a very scary and sad place to be.” What he watched his mother go through then Kameron sees now in an ever-growing number of people who call or drop in to Avena Originals, a natural health product and education provider started by his parents, Mel and Kathy Tarry, along with long-term family friend Francis Reglin, four years before his mom was diagnosed with lupus. People are looking for help not only with diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, but also with cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. More and more, people come to Avena Originals because their bodies are failing them. Kameron figures it shouldn’t be that way.

16 www.guidedsynergy.ca

He continues, “Understanding what was happening with her kidneys, she really focused on cleaning and detoxifying.” His family’s first introduction to natural health products was living enzymes. They sacrificed everything financially to support Kathy’s last-ditch effort to survive the disease savaging her body. “She started taking ridiculous amounts. The label would suggest one or two and she would be taking one hundred to two hundred of them per day,” he says. “It was very expensive. There was a lot of conflict within the family because we had to remortgage our home, we had to sell off our cars, we basically had to start selling our possessions to be able to afford this therapy, and my dad struggled with the cost.”

feature story Signs that it was worth the sacrifice started with her saying “I feel different inside.” Then she began to look different—better, healthier. Mel kept going—he would have rather lost everything than lose his wife. Six to eight months later, she was healthy again, with not a symptom to be found. And not a symptom of lupus has returned since they disappeared, Kameron says. That was Kameron’s graduating year and he had planned to go into computer architecture. But all of a sudden, the “soup and glue” had a lot more merit in his eyes. He dropped out of university before he started, joining his father’s company instead. “I started picking up and reading every nutritional book I could. I started studying enzymes, probiotics. I wanted to know more about the things that had just saved my mother’s life. I knew they worked, but now I wanted to know how.” Kameron will tell you that nearly losing his mother was the genesis not only of his rebirth, but of the rebirth of Avena Originals too. He started at the bottom, working for a father who was as skeptical of him as he once was of his father. He’s the company’s directing manager today, running the day-to-day operations while Mel transitions towards retirement, but it was a rough climb to get there, as Mel was harder on him than on the rest of the staff. Many family members work within the company. It’s still very much a family business and staff members feel like they’re one big family, despite how the company has grown. And grown it has—Avena Originals has become a lot bigger than the small business it started out as, selling essential oils and bowelcleansing detoxification products. “When my mother got sick, we really didn’t have the answers to address her sickness. Once we went through that whole ordeal with my mom, that’s when Avena started to really expand,” Kameron says. “We started to bring in the enzymes, the probiotics, vitamins, the whole-food complexes, because then we knew we had the core of what we needed to really make a difference in people’s lives. We had found the answers we were searching for and wanted to share them!” When you walk into Avena Originals’ main centre in Red Deer, you’ll see these words splayed on the wall above the front desk: “Health is not a matter of chance; it’s a matter of choice.” This is the philosophy Kameron has come to believe since he almost lost his mother. “You don’t just get healthy by luck. And you don’t get sick by luck. We create the disease inside of us by the way we eat, think and live, in the same way we can create health in the way that we eat, think and live.” Kameron sells products, but he says without a lifestyle to build on, those products cannot make a miracle happen. Education, therefore, is Avena Originals’ highest priority. The hope is that sales stem from education. Kameron figures that if he can make people listen, help them understand, they’ll be able to make better, more informed decisions, “supercharged” by natural health products. “It is definitely a slower process—Avena’s growing at a much slower pace than what it probably could be, but it’s doing it on—I think—a much richer foundation built for long-term health and wellness.” Understanding is the key to change. “Telling people what to do is one thing, but if they can actually start to understand why they’re doing it, they start to make better conscious decisions in every aspect of their life,” Kameron says. “They’re understanding how their body works and they’re understanding where they want to take that body.” For more information on educational events or products, please visit www.avenaoriginals.com. ave you ever felt yourself to be a victim of your life? Paralyzed by your past and unable to move forward in such a way that you can be proud, productive and confident in your true self? In Soulvival of the Fittest, Melissa Macky opens readers’ eyes to a new sense of self and a freeing of the soul. In order to achieve it, we just need to want it! For most of us, it takes a fear-provoking event, such as a death or an illness, to bring us to this awareness. These types of events make us question whether we will fall prey to circumstance or choose to break free and use this as motivation for a fulfilling future.

Macky recounts real events in her life that could have rendered her helpless to the depths of drugs, despair and destructive behaviours. Real people can relate to the place she has come from—you and I can say “I swear she must be talking about me!” Through this connection Macky makes us believe we too can bring ourselves back to life: not only can we survive, but we can live with actual purpose. Sure, moving forward is as scary as hell when you have been through such life-altering events, but the fear of living with your current circumstances forever is even worse. Macky provides many opportunities for her readers to acknowledge this vulnerability, and she challenges her readers to live and love with their whole hearts. Each chapter brings a new sense of selfawareness and letting go of the fear and ego that were holding us back. Macky provides very helpful activities for the reader at the end of her chapters. As uncomfortable as some of the challenges are, they allow us to move forward in discovering our true selves and what we can bring to life. This book will continue to be a resource on my nightstand; it will be a guide for those times when I question my path and my strength. If you have picked up this book, you too will understand your own power.

Is It Time to Shift Out of Love? A meditation to help you heal your heart I n the Spring 2014 issue, I shared the art of letting go. We learned to let go of anger, frustration, shame, blame, sadness and a multitude of other emotions as we make our way to forgiveness.

How about love? When is it time to shift out of love? In our society, we rarely discuss this topic. When we do, we don’t tell people to let go of love, but to get over it. How do we get over love if we can’t let go? As we increase self-awareness, we gain a better understanding of boundaries and the need to let go of those people we love but who are unhealthy. To shift out of love seems the most difficult thing we ever learn to do, but it is necessary to move on and restore the energetic balance between ourselves and our loved ones. When we talk about this, the first person who comes to mind is an ex-partner. Exes are definitely the most difficult to resolve our emotional love connection with, but what about friends or family members? These people are the hardest to let go of, because we typically don’t hate them; we have just come to terms with the fact that we need to let them go and move on to stay healthy. When people can’t be what we want them to be, it leaves a hole in our heart.

dysfunction. Read through this, and then lie down and revisit the journey from memory.

Find a comfortable space for yourself, whether sitting up straight and grounded to the earth or lying on your back. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing the tension to leave your body. Now imagine that you are walking down a path in nature. See and feel what is around you. You hear a waterfall. Continue walking until you come to the waterfall, which is surrounded by a beautiful lake. The water is warm; remove your clothes and slide in. Swim towards the waterfall, pull yourself up and stand under the warm flow of the water. As you feel the water flowing over your head and down your body, reach your hands into your body and gently and lovingly remove your heart. You notice a lot of thorns, some larger, some smaller. Remove one of the thorns. What does it represent to you? Identify it. Do you feel anger, frustration or some other emotion? Who are these emotions directed towards? Let all of this release as you come to terms with your emotions and place the thorn on the ledge beside you. Then remove another thorn. Continue doing this. Slide your thumb along the outside of your heart to feel for hidden thorns. When you are finished, please open your heart and see if there are any inside. You may not have removed all the thorns,

but that is okay. Hold your heart under the waterfall and let the sunlight and water wash and cleanse your heart. See a rainbow of colour swirling around your heart. Offer forgiveness and allow healing to take place on the scars where the thorns were removed. Place your heart back where it belongs. Call on an angel to remove the pile of thorns and release them into the light. The thorns represent not only the hurt and pain, but also the forgiveness of self and others. Offer a prayer of thanks and then turn to enter the water. When you reach shore, notice that the clothes you left behind are now different and represent love, compassion and kindness. Dress yourself and start walking back up the path. Feel yourself in a state of balance, centeredness and vitality. When you are ready, slowly open your eyes and come back into the room. My Reiki master, Elaine Woodward, introduced me to this meditation, which I use regularly to shift into unconditional love. I hope that it will help you.

I remember having to shift out of love with a very important family member. In that energetic moment of letting go my body was racked with pain—when we have an emotional release in the natural way, such as crying, the pain of it cuts deep into our soul! This is because much of our love is dysfunctional. We love too much and become consumed with the other person; we become controlling, demanding, or overly needy and jealous. When a break takes place, for any reason, these emotions also need to be released, but we don’t always feel like crying. Sometimes fear and anger take over for a long time before we find peace. I have a meditation that is incredibly helpful in releasing our emotional Summer 2014 l GUIDED SYNERGY 21

Going Gluten Free One boy's success story T here’s been a lot of discussion lately, in the media and in the Twitter and Facebook world, about whether or not going gluten free is a fad. Of course, we’re all entitled to our views. However, once you begin to dig a little deeper, investigate the science and experience the life-changing results of eliminating gluten and healing your gut, it’s tough to dispute the results.

My 8-year-old son, Caidyn, is a great example. Caidyn has always been a little boy: small boned, trim, almost frail looking. When a cold or the flu made the rounds, he was always the first in the house to get sick and took the longest to get better. Some of his other symptoms included a greenish tinge to his skin, irregular bowel movements, stomachaches and a rash on the back of his arms called keratosis pilaris (which looks like chicken skin). He was hyperactive at school—a teacher once mentioned the possibility of ADHD—and moody, and he wet his bed. Caidyn is a wonderful little boy, and like many parents, we attributed his hyperactivity and acting out to “middle-child syndrome.” A year and half ago, my husband, Mark, a chiropractor, decided to attend seminars and learn more about gluten and food sensitivities. Over time, we researched and learned on our own, and then we took action. First, we brought food sensitivity testing to Mark’s clinic and had our entire family tested. The blood work came back signifying that both Caidyn and his dad had leaky gut, so our next step was to address this.

Each family member eliminated foods based on his or her individual results. We all went through a five-week gut heal following protocols put out by Dr. Tom O’Bryan, a specialist in non-celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. We eliminated suspected troublesome foods for another four or five months and then slowly added foods back to our diets. We’ve had our ups and downs, but the improvement in Caidyn and his dad has been remarkable. And with the support of Caidyn’s teacher and principal, things have been going very well. He is now focusing significantly better in school, and he no longer acts out and gets upset over every little thing. He hasn’t wet the bed in months. His skin tone has completely changed, he’s starting to grow into his big feet, his stomachaches are gone and his bowel movements are perfect. We were fortunate to help Caidyn before he developed more serious problems like celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, mental health issues or an autoimmune disease. While the process was extremely difficult, seeing how much it has helped him has made it all worth it. “These muffins are dairy-free and gluten-free. The hemp seeds gives them a little extra protein boost; I purée them with the bananas and no one notices. I always double this recipe. Make sure to store these muffins in the fridge.”

Kellie’s Famous Mini Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins INGREDIENTS

3 ripe bananas 1 to 2 tablespoons hemp seeds ½ tsp sea salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1½ cups all-purpose gluten-free flour (I recommend Homesteader brand) 1½ tsp xanthan gum (only if your flour mix does not already contain it) 1 cup coconut sugar ¼ cup coconut oil 1 egg or replacement* ½ cup dairy-free mini-chocolate chips (check the label for dairy; I like the Enjoy Life brand) *Egg replacement can be 1 teaspoon of egg replacer to 2 tablespoons warm water, or 1 tablespoon ground flax to 3 tablespoons water, or 1 tablespoon chia to 3 tablespoons water. Make sure you let the chia sit in the water for 5 to 10 minutes. DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350° F. Oil a mini-muffin tray (24 count). Using a blender, blend the banana and the hemp seeds; set aside. In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients, set aside. In a separate bowl, purée the sugar and coconut oil. Add the egg (or replacement) and mix well. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the banana purée until all is mixed; do not over mix. Add the chocolate chips; mix with a wooden spoon. Drop a large spoonful into each muffin cup. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes; test with a toothpick and adjust baking time as needed. This recipe can also be used to make a loaf. Increase the temperature to 425° F and bake for 65 to 70 minutes. – Recipe by Kellie Timmins

Wild Boar Bacon and Wheat Berry Risotto INGREDIENTS 250 grams organic red wheat berry, blanched (I recommend Highwood Crossing brand) 20 ml olive oil 75 grams wild boar double-smoked bacon, diced 20 grams shallots, finely diced 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 50 grams carrots, diced 50 grams celery, diced 50 grams blanched beet root, diced 50 ml white wine 50 ml cream 10 grams parsley, chopped 5 grams rosemary, chopped 100 grams smoked Gouda cheese, grated (I recommend Sylvan Star) 25 grams butter 5 2-mm slices wild boar bacon, oven dried (see instructions below) Sprigs of chervil DIRECTIONS To blanch the wheat berries, boil a pot of salted water and add the wheat berries. It should take approximately 15 minutes to cook the berries. When they are done, they should be soft but with a bite to them.

“If you can’t find wild boar bacon, regular bacon can be used instead.”

Place the oil and diced bacon in a medium-heat sauté pan and sweat until the fat begins to come out, about five minutes. Add the shallots, garlic and vegetables and sauté another five minutes. Add the wheat berries; sauté for a few minutes and then deglaze with the wine. Add the cream. When the cream boils, add the parsley and rosemary and bring back to a boil. Add the cheese and butter. Taste for seasoning. Meanwhile, dry the paper-thin boar bacon slices in the oven under medium heat until they “crisp.” Garnish the dish with bacon strips. Add sprigs of chervil. – Recipe by Chef David Flegal

Ecotourism and the Culinary Arts Look for restaurants with sustainable practices E

cotourism unites communities and encourages conservation in order to minimize the impact of travel on the environment. Having grown up in the prairies of Saskatchewan, I live and breathe sustainability and have a passion for naturally sourced products. Growing up, I always believed knowing where your food came from is very important. As executive chef of Hyatt Regency Calgary and Thomsons restaurant, I know that it’s possible for restaurants to do their part. With the popularity of the local-food movement, more and more restaurants are buying from local producers or even growing their own food. For example, we have created a rooftop garden for Thomsons, Hyatt and the neighboring Catch & the Oyster Bar to use in our culinary creations. Its cedar box “pods” house a variety of produce, from carrots and rainbow chard to rosemary and edible flowers. The garden caters to numerous dishes in the restaurants,

28 www.guidedsynergy.ca

including pickled beets and jams. Thomsons sources nearly all of its products locally and embraces free-range, ethically raised dairy and protein products. Initiatives such as these, especially when combined with an environment where creativity and teamwork thrive, result in an environmentally savvy value system that creates delicious dishes while supporting the community. Many restaurants are working with local charitable and community organizations in ways that benefit all. In some communities, restaurants donate leftover food to shelters and soup kitchens to reduce waste. We collaborate with Apiaries and Bees for Communities, a local project that helps educate the public and industry about the importance of beekeeping. Our recently purchased bee apiary, consisting of two honeybee hives, has been placed in the rooftop garden, supporting community development and sustainability while

providing us with the luxury of fresh honey. The bees are expected to produce forty to eighty pounds of fresh honey per hive. This campaign will help to halt the decline in bees while promoting our values of using quality organic components in our dishes. Whether you’re travelling or just out for dinner with friends, choose restaurants that embrace sustainable practices such as these. Hyatt was the first hospitality brand to make a global commitment to serving food and beverages that are good for people, the planet and communities. Restaurants that are committed to local producers, environmentally friendly practices and helping their communities allow you to enjoy fine meals while minimizing your environmental impact. David Flegel, award-winning chef and the executive chef for Hyatt Regency Calgary, is one of Canada’s premier chefs. His culinary experiences span the globe.

The Value of the Intensive Group Experience Connect with others and yourself W

e’re all so busy in our day-to-day lives. Multitasking definitely isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. We find ourselves more tired, edgy and distracted than ever. The result of juggling so many balls is that it’s often really difficult to find our center and prioritize our emotional well-being, even with the support of regular counseling.

habitual and counterproductive attitudes, beliefs and expectations. We’re more open-minded and flexible when we’re out of our normal routine—this is one reason we have such great adventures when we’re travelling. In a new environment, with a fresh perspective, we’re more willing to explore new solutions to old problems.

One option for getting back in touch with what’s most important to us is to take time out of our hectic schedule to decompress, contemplate our path in life and review our goals. Going on vacation is a great way to relax and remove some of the pressure. Going on a retreat can take us even further, into a deeper state of inner calm and knowing, resulting in an emotional awakening.

The group setting allows participants to feel deeply connected to one another as they share this journey of transformation. The realization that they’re not alone in what they’ve been through or are going through is both reassuring and affirming, and it accelerates the process of personal growth. When participants feel that their safety and privacy are assured, the things they’re learning can penetrate through layers of fear and doubt and begin to resonate with their inner wisdom.

One of the things I love about group retreats is that they give participants the opportunity to put aside the demands of their hectic lives and focus solely on their own feelings, needs and personal development. There are few demands on the participants during these retreats, so they can explore psychological territory that might be too challenging to face when they’re feeling pulled in so many directions. Something else I’ve observed is the powerful effect of doing inner work over a span of several days. The psyche begins to unfold like a flower in bloom as we keep shining the warming rays of attention onto the issues at hand. I’ve noticed as well that being in an unfamiliar environment loosens psychological knots and breaks down emotional walls. In a different location, resistance fades and it’s easier to let go of

In my experience, the best retreats balance dynamic group sessions that propel the participants towards their goals with opportunities for contemplation and integration of the lessons learned. I’ve been leading retreats for many years now and I’ve always found them to be a powerful vehicle for meaningful and lasting change. The theme of the retreat is “Live Your Best Life, Be Your Best Self.” Participants will work on empowering themselves to manifest their full potential, so they can have the love and live the life that they truly deserve. Each day will begin and end with a group session, and there will be ample free time for relaxing in the gardens, hiking the local trails, visiting the spa, cooling off in the pool or enjoying a drink in the lounge. When the Family Vacation Goes Awry Avoiding unrealistic expectations W

ith the busy lives we lead today, often the family vacation is seen as an oasis of fun and relaxation off in the distance. We look forward to it, and this anticipation helps to get us through the tough days. If the vacation does not live up to our expectations, we might be disappointed and feel somehow cheated out of an experience that should have been ours. Unrealistic expectations can set the stage for disappointment and frustration. What are some of these high expectations? A couple vacationing alone may expect that it will be like a second honeymoon and that communication and intimacy will improve dramatically. Parents may feel that a family vacation will help them to re-create the harmony and closeness that has been dwindling away due to busy schedules and high stress. Children may expect that vacation time will be fun time and that parents will be relaxed and jovial and will let up on demands. They may also expect to participate in all of the available attractions, without regard to the family vacation budget. Sometimes it works out that we experience the perfect vacation, or one that even exceeds our expectations. This is beautiful

when it happens; however, many factors work against it. First of all, there is the change in daily routine. This requires adjustment, even when the change is positive. Then there may be tiredness, change in diet or anxiety related to the travelling itself. These factors introduce stress into the travelling environment, often at a time when the couple or family is in closer proximity

"Sometimes it works out that we experience the perfect vacation, or one that even exceeds our expectations." than usual. Travelling in a car or sleeping in motels or hotels does not allow people to get the quiet time or space from each other required to reduce stress. Children do not have the security of their own room to retreat to when they are having a bad day. So what can be done to reduce stress and enhance the enjoyment of vacation time? The first step begins when the vacation

is in the planning stages. Try to ensure that the activities planned suit the age and temperament of young travellers. Talk beforehand about some of the difficulties that may arise, and plan how to deal with them in advance. Agree on ways to let others know when you are getting irritable or need some time alone. Most of all, see this time as an opportunity to practice forgiveness and letting go of negative emotions. Keep your sense of humor. Start each day fresh, leaving what happened yesterday in the past. Time together is too precious to spend in anger or holding grudges. Vacation time passes all too quickly. Difficulties cannot be eliminated and will not disappear just because we are on holidays, but we can learn to deal with them, to heal wounded feelings, so that we can get on with the good stuff. It is not so important that we remember the details of all of our vacations, only that it was good to be together. Tips for a Smoother Family Vacation Plan to have a better time I

n her article on p.31, Gwen RandallYoung tells us that planning is the first step to reducing vacation stress. Often, being able to prevent or deal with a challenge efficiently comes down to preparation. Here are some tips to head off problems before they arise and to help you deal with inevitable challenging situations.

• When travelling by car, keep a just-in-case bag easily accessible at the front of your trunk. Include a change of clothes for each family member, paper towels or wipes, water and plastic bags for dirty clothes. If you ever have to clean up a sick or messy child at the side of the road, you’ll thank yourself for your forethought!

Instead of dreading long flights or airport waits, use them to satisfy your family’s need for downtime.

Does a family member suffer from motion sickness?

• Have everyone pack a couple of quiet activities that they can enjoy on their own: favourite books or magazines, music and headphones, puzzle books or crafts. • Let your child pack a small bag of favourite toys. My son used to bring his miniature airplane and services vehicles on flights to set up a tarmac on his tray table. (Learn from my experience: Explain to your child in advance why it’s important that scenarios do not include a reason to shout “Fire!”) • Buy one or two new toys and books to give your kids when they’re showing signs of boredom. You can wrap the surprises to add to the excitement Are you tired of everyone plugging in to their own devices? Plan ways to prevent boredom and connect with your family at the same time. • For car trips, audiobooks (available from your public library) allow you to enjoy a good book together. My family’s favourites on our annual 1,000-mile trips were Stuart McLean’s hilarious Vinyl Cafe recordings. • Games like travel bingo also encourage interaction. Search online for “family car games” or consult a book such as Lonely Planet’s Travel with Children to find descriptions of new games and old favourites. Be prepared for messes and lost luggage. • When travelling by air, pack a change of clothes for each family member in your carry-on luggage, along with any other essentials that would be hard to do without if your luggage were delayed or lost. The extra clothes also come in handy in case of spills or other messes.

Travelling, by its very nature, involves some risk of things going awry, and you can’t anticipate every situation that might come up. But planning ahead can prevent or reduce stress, allowing you to focus less on problems and more on fun. Susan Fitzgerald is a freelance editor, writer and researcher based in Vancouver. She tends to overplan for trips, but when things go wrong, she’s glad she does.

• Consult your health-care practitioner about remedies. Ginger and acupressure wristbands can relieve nausea without knocking you out. I used them with great results when I was pregnant. • Play travel games that encourage your children to look out the window into the distance, such as the alphabet game. Motion sickness occurs when your inner ear and your eyes detect different kinds of motion, which is why focusing on an object in a vehicle can bring it on. Looking into the distance helps your body make sense of the motion. • Whether or not your children are prone to motion sickness, plan as if they are. My daughter once came down with a nausea-inducing ear infection two hours into a seventeen-hour car trip. Thank goodness for our just-in-case box and motion sickness remedies! Take the information you’ll need if there’s a crisis on the road or back home. If your house sitter phones to tell you a pipe has burst, you’ll be able to deal with it more efficiently. • Keep a master list of information you might need in an emergency: passport numbers, personal contacts, insurance plan numbers and so on. Before each trip, print a customized version with reservation numbers, contact information for friends you want to visit along the way and other handy information. • If you care for elderly parents, include phone numbers of people who could help them if they have a problem, such as doctors, neighbours or friends. • If you’re going to a busy city, find out before you leave which radio stations give frequent traffic reports and include that on your list.

Journey into the Possible Travel with a purpose I

magine going on a vacation and coming back changed, activated and inspired! The upswing in travel with a purpose— spiritual, volunteer and ecotourism—is a great indication of the shifting collective consciousness. Travel is certainly not the only way to inject spirituality and meaning into the mundane; there are other entertaining, educational options to change your perspective and encourage a shift. But the wonderful thing about travel is that it can put you on a fast track to change. Plucking yourself out of your life and immersing yourself in growth and energetic activation for a month, a week or even a single day can have a huge impact. While writing our novel One Great Year, my co-author Rene DeFazio and I travelled from Vancouver, BC, to South America, crisscrossing Peru and Bolivia, researching, filming meditating and evolving along the way. We knew that our ancient story location, Stone at Center, presently known as Tiahuanaco or Tiwanaku, Bolivia, would be fascinating to visit, but we never anticipated our experiences would forever impact how we see world history. We arrived in majestic La Paz with our backpacks bursting, prepared to adjust to the high altitude. We set out across the Altiplano of Bolivia, driving two and a half hours to visit the ancient anomalies of Puma Punku and the Akapana pyramid complex that anchor the tiny town of Tiahuanaco. The whole area, directly beneath the celestial Southern Cross, is thick with energy,

and we couldn’t help but wonder Who? What? How? at every turn. Although the ruins presently border a humble village, the place feels important, and our intuition was alive as we explored and felt compelled to touch every wall and stone. Could we feel the ancestors or was it our imagination?

"Our intuition was alive as we explored and felt compelled to touch every wall and stone." One highlight of the Akapana was the quadrant known as the subterranean chamber, said to represent the underworld. The walls of this lower chamber are distinguished by protruding heads and mysterious faces from ancient times. The fascinating thing is that the faces appear to be multicultural, a United Nations of days long past. If you look carefully, there are even a number of visages that look otherworldly, eerie and exciting all at once. How could these ancients have imagined the faces of too-distant countries and planets? Perhaps there was once more contact than we know? Across the grassy plain, an easy walk from the pyramid, are the ruins of Puma Punku. Having travelled the globe—Egypt, Cambodia, Easter Island, Kenya—we can say that in our experience there is nowhere in the world like Puma Punku. It is worth making the journey to see it. Its origins

are unknown. Although the structures are ancient, you get the sense of being in a modern concrete graveyard. It is littered with enormous and precisely honed stone blocks with copper staples and interlocking designs; these works indicate incredible knowledge of architecture and engineering. Some have suggested Puma Punku was once a shipping port, although its elevation of 12,800 feet above sea level would date the origin of the ruins long before the currently accepted timeline of world history. Tiahuanaco was only one of many spiritual locations that we visited while researching and writing. Peru and Bolivia are both beautiful and inspiring, and we visited islands, jungles, ruins, portals, villages and sanctuaries that had a profound effect on our spiritual advancement. We look forward to returning and sharing the magic with the rest of the world. When you combine trekking and learning with meditation and full-on kundalini activations, a whole new kind of vacation can happen! No matter what country you visit, it becomes a journey into the possible. Tamara Veitch and Rene DeFazio are the authors of One Great Year. While writing the next book in the series, they have partnered with Spiritual Quest Journeys to take travellers to sacred sites around the globe. Do You Have Guardian Angels?

Trust your intuition G

Cindy Smith Cindy Smith is an Angel Empowerment Practitioner™ instructor. Visit cindysmithaep.com.

uardian angels are a gift Creator gives everyone at birth, our own personal connection to divine energy. The word angel comes from the Greek word for ‘messenger’; therefore, regardless of our belief system or faith, we are all connected to Higher Power. I refer to my intuition as my Angel Team, which includes my guardian angels and whichever archangel energy I have with me at that moment. Your guardian angels are always with you and a part of you. How does intuition work with your guardian angels? When I trust in my intuition and listen to my guidance, I am trusting in my Angel Team and myself. My divine is connected with myself, I understand knowing without being taught, my gut feelings ring true, my thoughts are clear without question and I see with purpose. This is what I believe trusting in our intuition means. Guardian angel energy has never been in life form. Guardian angels are pure white light with no ego, only divine vibration. Once you receive the gift of guardian angels, they will always be with you, regardless of your own belief system concerning

punishment, worthiness or acceptance. You are never punished by your angels and they support you through both good and trying times without any judgement. However, you must remember to ask for assistance or guidance from your Angel Team. We all have free will, and our angels are unable to intercede unless asked, except during a near-death experience if it is not our time to cross to the white light. How can you listen to your angels? You always have been listening to them. The key is recognising how they communicate with you through your senses—thoughts, hearing, seeing, feeling and knowing. Trust me when I say that it takes some practice to discern between your ego and your Angel Team. Ask and then be patient for the answers to be shown to you without inner self-doubt. Once you acknowledge the difference between ego and your divine guidance, have fun in trusting yourself. I look forward to sharing about archangel vibration in the next issue.

Meditation and the Internet

Using the power of the Internet to find inner peace I

n our fast-paced world, many of us desire to find a way to disconnect from all the modern distractions—our overflowing email inboxes, constantly beeping cell phones and the gamut of online activities we allow to steal our time—and return to inner peace. The electronic leash has enabled us to be connected to work, family and friends every second of every day; however, instead of giving us a stronger sense of connection, it often leaves us feeling stressed out and unfulfilled. Many of us, including me, blame the influx of new technologies for this feeling, but what if, instead of shunning technology, we embraced it as a means to help us with our daily meditation practices and used it for its original purpose of connectivity? When I decided it was time to explore a path of meditation, this is exactly where I began. Instead of cursing the invention of my smartphone, which has become permanently attached to my hand, I decided to put it to good use. A Google search of the word meditation yielded millions of hits—not a bad start. Within seconds, I narrowed my search to find meditation tips, classes near my home, blogs recounting the experiences of others and articles outlining the many benefits of meditation. The abundance of information and perspectives available online helped me find the inspiration I needed to take up my spot on the pillow and begin using some of the meditation techniques and mantras I had discovered. A visit to YouTube added millions of meditation-related video files to my growing online reference library. These included recordings of music to play in the background while meditating and guided meditations for beginners or for a particular purpose, such as finding spirit guides, chakra

cleansing and healing. The guided meditation videos instantly became my favorite tool, as they help beginning meditators like me avoid getting lost and frustrated by the brain fog and constant stream of thoughts that keep creeping in. They are always available, literally only a click away, for those whose schedules or circumstances don’t allow them to get to a meditation class, or as an extra resource to use at home. I discovered that even the Dalai Lama has an online presence. Not only does he garner thousands of hits on Google and YouTube, but he also has his own official website (www.dalailama.com), where he posts his messages and teachings to reach a very large audience. You can also watch webcasts of his public appearances. I encourage you to shop locally when you can for meditation-related products, but online shopping sites are also a great resource. Amazon sells books on meditation and CDs of meditation music and guided meditations. On Etsy, independent sellers offer a multitude of meditation products, such as beads, malas, cushions and other unique items, many of them handmade. Not to be outdone, eBay boasts tens of thousands of items for those of us looking for meditation tools online. Thanks to the growth of the online community, technology is not the antithesis of inner peace that many people believe it to be. If we embrace it rather than vilify it, we can use this immense information tool to expand our meditation practices and connect with others in search of similar aspirations. After all, if it’s good enough for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, it’s good enough for me. Rebecca Radmanovich is an Edmonton native who has recently discovered meditation as a helpful tool to relieve day-to-day stress.

The Problem with Soul Mates Why soul mates make challenging life partners I

’m often asked, “Is this person my soul mate?” After reading for clients for more than thirty years, you would think I’d be used to that question, but the truth is that it always flummoxes me. “What does that mean to you?” I ask. The concept of soul mate does mean different things to everyone who asks it. Aside from the obvious—that my soul mate is by definition not yours—everyone has a characteristic that they believe will be embodied in their particular soul mate. It might be physical (height, weight, colouring), personality (serious, quiet, risk-taking), spiritual (religion) or intellectual (education, aspirations). In any case, most people I speak with are confident their soul mate will be attractive to them and, of course, attracted to them equally, passionately. Aside from these obvious embodied characteristics, there is a myriad of other possible reference points, such as “Are we meant to be together?” “Is it in the greatest good for me to be with this person?” and “Is it my destiny to be with this person or might I miss my true soul mate if I bond with this person now?” Seldom will an esoteric author take on this issue, because it’s just too grand and sensitive a matter. You might be of the opinion that this is a frivolous query, but in truth it’s daunting and powerful. Who we partner with has a life-altering impact on the decisions we make in every aspect of our lives: decisions, for example, that will determine the status

38 www.guidedsynergy.ca

of our health, if we have offspring, and our longevity, geographical location, career path, self-esteem and other familial and friend relationships. Yet most people choose their life partners rather impulsively, randomly and—well, to be blunt—mindlessly. From what I have learned over the past forty years about soul mates (which you could write on a Post-It note!), a soul mate is someone our soul becomes attached to, often inexplicably yet determinedly. Because this attraction has nothing to do with ego, lust or apparent practicality, it’s impossible to try and explain it to anyone. It is also highly unlikely that our soul mate would be the perfect mate for us at all. A soul mate is like your personal guru. Your true soul mate is a spiritual twin, not an embodied one. This means that your soul mate may indeed be presenting in a non-romantic relationship: a sibling, parent, child, distant relative, friend, colleague or neighbour. It might just be someone you meet sitting next to you on public transit! Your soul mate is the person with whom, when you meet him or her for the first time, you feel as if you are spiritually home. No words are necessary for the two of you to be at one, yet this person is your perfect opposite in every way. Complete and absolute opposite. The two of you together, after all, make up a complete whole. If your soul mate loves details, you love the big picture; if you love art, your soul mate loves accounting; if you love to talk about everything, he or she is silent; if you love to travel, he or she loves being at home. Imagine partnering with someone so opposite to you. It would be frustrating, conflicting, intriguing and, at the

same time, very addictive. Not one person in your social circle would understand or condone the alliance, and no matter how hard you tried to explain it, you would fail miserably.

"A soul mate is someone our soul becomes attached to, often inexplicably yet determinedly." Together you and your soul mate make a perfect whole. In a romantic partnership, you would want to be with this person all the time, yet rarely would you see eye to eye or agree on where to be. You would be driven to question every idea, feeling, impulse or choice you make, driving you constantly up a challenging spiral of growth and awareness. It would be exhausting, exhilarating and crazy-making. You can see why partnering with a soul mate is less than desirable. Partnership is ideal between two people who share at least a few fundamental similarities such as values, age and goals. These similarities would never be shared between soul mates. Instead of asking whether someone is your soul mate, I would be far more comfortable with the question “Is this person going to make a life-enhancing partner for me?” I can definitely answer that one with more accuracy and ease. How Does Your Money Make You Feel? The power of financial beliefs O

Andrew Ruhland Andrew H. Ruhland, CFP, CIM, is the founder of Integrated Wealth Management in Calgary. The IWM team specializes in helping private wealth creators optimize their overall financial wellness and enjoy the fruits of their labour. For more information, visit integratedwealthmanagement.ca.

ver the last decade of personal exploration, I’ve discovered a common thread between disciples of formalized religious institutions and the more self-directed, less structured approach to spirituality that many Guided Synergy readers are living. That common thread is a general belief that financial wealth, success and prosperity are somehow an impediment or barrier to goodness, happiness or salvation. This speaks to the vast power of our beliefs.

In my nearly twenty years in the financial industry, I’ve witnessed how much power people give to their money, to their relative wealth and to the hyperactive machinations of the financial markets, and how this effects them. Some people choose not to give away their emotional power to money and hire advisers to create a disciplined structure and to manage its daily complexities. For these families who seek a professional partnership, things invariably seem to work out well—there is flow.

I deeply believe that money is not in conflict with enlightenment. Almost any form of energy can be used in service of light or of darkness. Since money is essentially energy, the way that one obtains, manages, stewards and distributes it is the decisive factor. The intention behind any act determines its nobility.

However, the majority of those I’ve met over the years have struggled with the power they’ve given away. They’ve allowed money to determine how they feel about themselves and, thus, about their happiness. The normal volatile behaviour of investments activates deeply engrained fears of poverty; instead of remaining disciplined and focused during a crisis, people give in to negative feelings and take actions that are destructive to their clearly stated goals. This is essentially giving away power to fear, in this case to fears around money.

Along with the fear of death, the fear of poverty is undoubtedly one of the most powerful tools to control people. Many of us were raised with a fear of poverty, and we can see those deep fears playing out locally and globally. While love supports unity, equality and balance, fear usually promotes separation, inequality and disquieting imbalance. With few exceptions, those in positions of power and influence have understood and leveraged this human frailty for their own benefit throughout history. Given most people’s insecurities about money, is it any wonder that having more financial wealth than those around us might spark feelings of superiority that seek to numb our other insecurities? Or perhaps when we have less money than others, it triggers our own fears of being “less than” and we find ourselves feeling or even expressing thoughts of jealousy or moral superiority to cover up how bad we allow ourselves to feel. Money and its trappings have an almost mystical ability to act as the arbiter of our perceptions of self-worthiness. If we allow it to, money can make us feel like we are more than or less than someone else, rather than having more than or less than someone else. This can lead to numbing behaviours such as the abuse of credit, legal and illegal substances, sex and technology, and even busyness. Unfortunately, when we numb the negative feelings we also numb the positive ones.

My professional experience has taught me that most people within the financial industry are oblivious to the spiritual significance of money, wealth and abundance. They sincerely try to help their customers, but are still asleep with respect to the intimate interconnections of wealth, health and happiness. Witnessing the effects of both healthy and unhealthy beliefs around money is the catalyst for my biggest professional project: my first book. Given where the world is economically, politically and spiritually, it’s the right time to integrate the wisdom of experts in human behaviour, broader economic and political cycles and the spiritual significance of money. It’s time to build a bridge between the emotional, spiritual and practical aspects of money. Perhaps you can help. How does your money make you feel? This is the essential question that we all should ask and answer in the context of our lives. If you are willing to share your personal experiences and perceptions on this important question, I’d love to hear from you. Your feedback will be kept strictly confidential. I would also appreciate any suggestions for research sources that you believe might be helpful. I am grateful for your assistance.
