Spiritual Gratitude

“We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

S

pirituality means different things to different people. Both “He was a real character” and “God rest his soul” refer to the spirit of an individual.

very often, I am grateful to her and to many others whom I have encountered along the way for their contribution to my spiritual growth.

Larry Trivieri, Jr., a leading writer and editor in the field of holistic and alternative medicine, states, “The most visible manifestation of spirit is nature, where we most fully encounter and interact with life’s primal energies in the forms of earth, water, fire, and air.” This might explain why so many Canadians—including me—love camping. Swimming in the water, feeling the sand between my toes, breathing in the moist air and sitting around the warmth of a campfire at the end of the day—all of these are behaviors that deepen my inner spirit.

Being consciously aware of the role of spirit in our individual lives can have an impact on our overall health. Research shows that the positive thoughts, comfort and strength we gain from religion, meditation and prayer can contribute to healing and a sense of well-being.

The heart of spirituality is discovering what gives meaning to our life. For some, spirituality is associated with religion. For others, it is a measure of personal growth in their relationships with their spouse, family, friends or community, or in their relationship with themselves. Sometimes it is through our relationships that we find the greatest opportunities for spiritual growth.

In this Fall issue, we asked our contributors to focus on spirit. I think we hit a home run. The result is an impressive collection of articles that promise to nurture your spirit in a meaningful way. Linda Warwick, Editor

Dedicated to

Breast Health An interview with Suzanne Sutherland

I

f Suzanne Sutherland had her way, every October would be known as Breast Health Awareness Month. Rather than focus on the disease the pink-ribbon month is widely known for, she wants women to think about being proactive in their breast health. “Early detection is important, but prevention is the key,” says Suzanne, 45, who has made these words her professional mantra.

Written by Jennifer Worley Photography by Don Molyneaux nearly two decades and has acquired skills in nutrition, allergy testing and biofeedback testing. As she reflects on her newest endeavour, she is still somewhat surprised that just a few years ago, she had never heard of breast thermography. Her journey towards thermography began nearly twenty years ago, in her native London, England. In 1993, just one year after qualifying as a homeopath, she lost her mother to breast cancer.

Suzanne is a certified thermographic technician who offers testing at her Calgary clinic, Nature’s Wisdom, and at a second location in North Vancouver, BC. Using a specialized camera, she takes infrared images of women’s breasts to determine the overall health of the breasts.

“That profoundly affected me, for so many reasons. It’s a loss I feel to this day and it’s been almost 18 years,” says Suzanne.

Thermography is based on the scientific premise that in order for abnormal cells to grow, they must have increased blood supply. That increased blood flow generates heat that can be measured through thermography. The testing is considered to be one of the best early detection systems for breast cancer by experts such as Dr. Christiane Northrup, bestselling author on women’s health. In addition, Suzanne notes there are many inflammation-related breast conditions that thermography can help detect or monitor, including mastitis and fibrocystic breasts.

“I just didn’t seem to ever work with anyone who had any breast issues. I must not have been attracting it,” she says. “But when I reached 40, I realized that, with a personal family history of breast cancer, I needed to start being proactive myself.”

So great was her loss that she found herself avoiding the topic of breast health, both personally and professionally.

“What I love about thermography is that it’s preventative, but still monitoring and, of course, it’s totally safe, noninvasive and radiation-free,” she says. “I feel it’s a very powerful tool.”

By this time, many changes had taken place in Suzanne’s life. In 1993, she had immigrated to Canada and married her husband, Steve Sutherland, a Calgary wellness practitioner whom she’d met years earlier at a conference in Barcelona. Now settled in Calgary, she was introduced to thermography when she decided to go along with some girlfriends who were having the testing done at a mobile unit visiting from North Carolina. A year later, when she returned to the unit for her second test, she had an idea.

Thermal imaging is the latest addition to Sutherland’s lengthy natural-health career. She has practiced as a homeopath for

“While I was being reimaged, I was watching the lady doing it and I thought, ‘I could do that.’ And then I thought, ‘Maybe

I should.’” “Should” became “will,” and Suzanne embarked on her training with Dr.Alexander Mostovoy, a homeopathic doctor at the Thermography Clinic in Toronto, and Dr. Robert Kane, of the International Academy of Clinical Thermology in California, both of whom have considerable experience in thermography. In 2010, she became a certified thermographic technician. Although Suzanne focuses on thermography from a health perspective, thermal imaging has a long and varied history. It has been used by military and law enforcement organizations for surveillance, by firefighters to locate people and fire sources through smoke and by the construction industry to detect heat leaks in buildings. In 2009, thermography was used in airports to identify people who might have the H1N1 virus. The thermographic test at Suzanne’s clinic are predominantly for the breasts but can also image the thyroid/head area as well. The infrared camera uses heat rather than light for its images, so before the test begins the client sits for 15 minutes, disrobed from the waist up, in a room kept at 20 degrees Celsius. This allows the images to show a true portrait of the heat in her breasts, unaffected by stress or the environment. The photos can display a rainbow of vivid colours—red, pink, yellow, green, blue and even white—but not all of these hues paint a pretty picture. The increased blood supply that abnormal cells need to grow will show up on a thermogram as hot colours, such as pink and red. White represents extreme heat. Heat and hot spots are what interpreters are looking for. Continued on page 8 Fall 2011 Guided Synergy Magazine 7

From page 6

The images are sent to Dr. Mostovoy, who interprets them and compiles the results. Suzanne reviews his report with clients and discusses possible courses of action. Each breast is measured individually and is rated to determine its risk of developing breast cancer. When the results show an elevated risk, Suzanne may suggest a number of further tests. A saliva hormone test, for example, can uncover hormonal imbalances, which for some women translate to painful or heavy menstrual periods, prolonged breast tenderness or excessive bloating. An estrogen metabolism ratio test can determine if there is estrogen build-up in the breasts, an indicator that the liver is not doing the detoxifying job that it should be. Supplements and lymphatic drainage—a specific form of massage—may be prescribed to help establish a balance. If the results suggest greater risk, an ultrasound or a mammogram may be recommended. Suzanne will also suggest ways for clients to improve their breast health (see sidebar). These might include simple lifestyle changes such as reducing caffeine intake, since some studies indicate that caffeine might increase estrogen levels; improving nutrition; or even reducing the amount of time a bra is worn, since prolonged wear can hamper circulation or more importantly the lymphatic system. Suzanne is frequently asked whether breast thermography can replace mammography. She stresses that the two are completely different tests. While thermography looks at heat in the breast, it is not a structural test like a mammogram, which can pinpoint a lump or tumour. Both have their place, she says, noting that thermography is particularly useful for early

Suzanne with a client at her Calgary clinic, Nature’s Wisdom.

detection and monitoring; some studies have indicated that can it pick up clues as much as eight years before abnormalities are seen with a mammogram. “I feel this is a very positive test—it’s not meant to be scary,” says Suzanne, who recommends annual thermographic testing for every woman aged 19 or older. “Whatever your results are, you can start improving from there.” By having an annual thermogram, women can learn what is normal for them and monitor changes from one year to the next. Ideally there will be no changes, indicating stability—or better still, changes that indicate improvement in breast health. Suzanne devotes a great deal of her time to making women aware of breast thermography through her website, Twitter feed and printed materials and by attending trade shows throughout the year. She works with naturopaths, offering clinics to help educate their clients.

While knowledge is one thing, Suzanne ultimately wants women to take action. “Losing my mom that way was very traumatic for me because it really did affect the way I felt about my own breasts, about my own health,” she says. “I needed to stop living with that fear and start being proactive. And when you are proactive, it’s amazing what positive energy you get from that. “It doesn’t matter if it’s breast cancer or heart disease. Why wait until you’ve been diagnosed? Once you look at it from that perspective, you’ll never look at it another way again.” ✽ Jennifer Worley is a Calgary-based writer with more than twenty years in the media industry. She has written on a wide range of topics, including health and fitness, travel and fashion. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including the Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun and Flare magazine.

Suzanne’s shares her tips for optimum breast health: • Suzanne recommends having a regular thermography test once a year from age 19, although it is never too late to start.

• Wear a good-fitting bra in a natural fibre. A specialty store can help you find the correct size. Avoid underwire bras.

• Look in the mirror. Know what’s normal for your breasts and pay attention to changes such as discolouration, variations in texture, nipple discharge, nipple inversion or puckering.

ª Go without a bra when you can. A study of women with fibrocystic breasts has shown very positive results when participants stopped wearing bras.

• In addition to self-exams at the same time each month, have an annual breast exam by your doctor or qualified professional. 8 Fall 2011 Guided Synergy Magazine

• Eat cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. They contain substances that help detoxify estrogen through the liver.

• Reduce your caffeine intake. Drink green tea. • If thermography levels are high, ask your practitioner for recommendations for further testing. • Supplements, lymphatic drainage and diet can be useful in detoxifying the breasts. The Best Place for Garbage: The Essential Guide to Recycling with Composting Worms

Where to Get Worms in Alberta Once you’ve got your bin and bedding ready, you’ll need at least half a pound of worms (about 800 to 1,200). Red wigglers, to be precise. If you know people who are already vermicomposting, they may be able to give you some. If not, you can purchase worms at the following places:

by Sandra Wiese Book Review by Sarah Hardwood

I

n North America, we typically deal with garbage in two ways: burn it or bury it. Sandra Wiese—environmentalist, author and teacher—advocates burying it, but not in the way or place you might assume. In her fabulously practical and funny vermicomposting guide, The Best Place for Garbage, she shows us how we can easily divert a great deal of our garbage from landfills—not only food waste but also other once-living stuff that worms love to eat: old Daily Herald Tribunes (they’re printed with soy-based ink, FYI), raked leaves, cardboard, sawdust. Apparently the buggers will even eat certain brands of duct tape! Wiese’s book is indispensable for answering all the questions that you, as an eager rookie, might not even know you have. “If you are not the nurturing type, if all things green do not already thrive under your touch, if baby animals do not inexplicably recover with your careful ministrations, if people far and wide are not miraculously cured by your homemade soup, then you will have a LOT of questions,” she says. Luckily, composting with worms isn’t rocket science. But there are many websites preaching lots of vague, contradictory or illogical dos and don’ts that can scare the squeamish or completely intimidate a beginner. The Best Place for Garbage h e l p s

enthusiastic newbies sort out the crap, so to speak. Wiese covers everything: what to use for worm bins and bedding, worm chow, maintenance, population control, troubleshooting, harvesting the castings (worm poop) and what to do with them (a.k.a. “bartending for plants”). She outlines how you can vermicompost outdoors as well, but I wouldn’t recommend trying that through the winter in Alberta. Red wigglers are much less effective in frozen form.

Wiese is a small-scale commercial worm composter with a simple dream—that someday the statement “I have worms” will not cause wrinkled noses and the reaction “I hope the doctor can give you something for them!” According to Alberta Environment, compostable stuff makes up 40 to 60 per cent of Alberta’s waste stream. With statistics like that, it’s easy to understand why Wiese so passionately promotes vermicomposting and why so many people are eager to start. Her guide is indispensable for anyone wanting to get involved. Five dollars for the e-book version is money well spent. Sarah hails from a ridiculously small logging and mining town in central BC that fills her with nostalgia and an affinity for the unusual. She now happily illustrates, teaches, writes and designs in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

In a food processor (or blender) place 3/4 cups of the cut corn, add 1 cup of the cooking liquid from the pot, and process to form a chunky puree. Add the pureed mixture, the remaining corn, chili powder, cumin, Hain Pure Foods Iodized Sea Salt, and pepper to the pot, and simmer the soup an additional 5 minutes. Honey is Nature’s Antiseptic

A powerful healing agent H

oney—it’s nothing new. It’s been used medicinally for thousands of years all over the world, especially for the treatment of wounds, burns and skin conditions. Ancient writings record its healing properties. But as the use of antibiotics rose around the Second World War, honey fell by the wayside. Now, though, as more and more bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, renewed interest in this old remedy has led to a number of scientific studies on its medicinal value. Most of these studies support what the ancients knew: Honey is a powerful antiseptic and healing agent. What is it about honey that makes it so useful? First, its acidity and high sugar content deter the growth of microbes. Second, when it comes into contact with body tissue, an enzyme in honey releases hydrogen peroxide, a sanitizing agent. Finally, honey contains compounds that promote healing and tissue growth. As a result, honey has been found to be effective even for chronic wounds that haven’t responded to other treatment. It kills bacteria and reduces infections, pain, swelling, healing times and scarring. And as a bonus, honey doesn’t irritate the skin as some topical antiseptic medications do. – Written by Susan Fitzgerald Part one of a three-part series on the benefits of honey and pollen recommended by Ginette Paradis, Paradis Valley Honey Ltd.

Balance Vata During the Fall Season Warm yourself from the inside out F

all is a time of change. As the leaves turn their autumn colours and temperatures start to drop, you may find yourself craving warm foods and bringing your heavier sweaters out from the back of your closet. These behaviours are not just due to the change in the weather; the shift in season brings with it an energetic change as well. According to the Ayurvedic healing practice, our very constitutional make-up changes as the seasons do. Thus, we should follow our desire to eat different foods or wear different clothes in order to maintain balance. At this time of year, when the weather is relatively cool and dry, the vata dosha, which is named for the Sanskrit word for “wind” and is connected to the element of air, is more present. When it is in balance, vata increases our creativity and mental

alertness, but when it is out of balance, it can cause anxiety, worry or mental restlessness. So what should we do to keep our constitution in balance as summer turns to fall? As always, Ayurveda focuses on both lifestyle and diet. Every day, warm some oil—olive, almond, sesame and castor oil all work well—and give yourself a self-massage. Pay special attention to your joints. Consume foods that are warm and grounding. Add warm spices to your dishes, such as ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, cumin, cardamom, horseradish, coriander, garlic, cloves, sea salt and fennel. Fruits such as grapes, olives, avocado, melon, mango, figs, papaya, berries and coconut are suitable. Eat plenty of vegetables, including sweet potato and yam, peas, green beans, beets, artichoke, carrots, peppers, squash and

eggplant. For proteins, focus on fish, eggs, white meat and any type of nut. Relax with comforting drinks such as spiced tea, warm water, warm juices and warm milk or milk alternative. And, of course, a regular yoga and meditation practice will help you stay in balance throughout the year, no matter what the season. Leslie Lovlin is an Ayurvedic spa specialist, wellness counsellor and member of the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada. She has more than a decade of experience as a natural health practitioner. A long-time resident of northern Alberta, Leslie is passionate about educating her clients on the many ways to live a balanced lifestyle. She is the founder of Yemanja Wellness Studio.

Dr. Brett Hessel, Chiropractor

Getting to the Sole of Pain T

How foot dysfunction affects our bodies

he first patient I saw as a newly minted chiropractic intern was a middleaged woman with severe headaches. After a thorough physical exam, I diagnosed a dysfunction in the upper cervical facet joints (located in the neck) as the cause. I proudly presented my exam results and diagnosis to my senior clinician for approval before starting treatment. After patiently listening to my presentation, he asked if I had assessed the patient’s foot function. Confused, I answered no. She had headaches, not foot pain. He bluntly told me that headaches and neck dysfunction are sometimes only a symptom of an underlying, and seemingly unrelated, problem. So we checked the woman’s feet. They were very flat, which affected her posture and gave her an abnormal gait. This created mechanical problems that ultimately caused her headaches. Once we treated her feet, her headaches improved significantly. To this day, I regularly check my patients’ feet to look for any hidden causes behind their symptoms. One of the most common foot dysfunctions I see in my practice—and one that up to 68 percent of the population suffers from to some degree—is overpronation. Overpronation means that your foot flattens excessively when you are walking. There are various reasons why this can happen, so a full assessment is recommended to identify the specific causes. A frequent reason for overpronation is tight calf muscles. When your calf muscles are tight, your ankles don’t move through their full range of motion. This can cause a chain reaction of problems. You may compensate by turning your feet out, or “toeing out,” in order to improve ankle motion. Unfortunately, this generates a lot of stress in your foot, which can contribute to increased pronation, bunions and calluses. Toeing out can also increase pressure on the inside of your knee, causing pain. Your knee can rotate inwards, making you appear knocked-kneed, and over time this can lead to excessive wear of your knee joint.

What is pronation? Pronation is the inward (medial) roll of the foot and in particular the heel and arch which occurs naturally at the heel strike as a cushioning mechanism. Overpronation is when the feet roll inward too much. Supination, also known as underpronation, is the opposite to pronation where the feet don't roll inward enough. Wearing the wrong type of shoe will lead to painful shins and joints, or even injury. – Source: www.runnersworld.ltd.uk

Together, toeing out and inward knee rotation can make your hips rotate outward, causing tight hip muscles, hip pain or leg pain. If one hip rotates outwards, that leg may appear shorter than the other, and if the difference in length is great enough, your back may try to compensate, causing back pain. Even though overpronation and poor ankle motion might not be painful, they can trigger a number of problems and have a negative effect on your quality of life. The first step, then, is to identify the nature of the dysfunction. Restoring normal function to your ankle and foot can go a long way to improving problems in other parts of your body. A pioneer in the treatment of foot problems was Mahlon Locke, a medical doctor who practiced in smalltown Ontario in the 1930s. Dr. Locke believed that many cases of arthritis were due to fallen arches, and that specific manipulation of the foot joints could reduce arthritis and joint pain.

He felt that restoring normal foot motion created a chain reaction of improvement. He used arch supports, special shoes, medications and physical therapy to help restore the arches. His results were so amazing that he regularly treated 200 to 300 patients a day. Today, a number of practitioners— chiropractors, massage therapists, reflexologists, podiatrists, chiropodists, physiotherapists and medical doctors— can all help restore normal foot function. Techniques such as yoga and osteopathy and simple practical approaches such as wearing proper footwear and regular stretching can also significantly improve the function of our feet. In our quest to treat the body holistically, we should look for the cause of the pain, rather than just treating the symptoms. A careful assessment of our feet and how they affect the function of the rest of our body is a good place to start. Brett Hessel, DC, CAFCI, graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto and the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI) for medical acupuncture. Brett has also trained with the AFCI for traditional Chinese medicine and with the China Shanghai International Acupuncture Training Centre. Brett and his wife, Jennifer, currently operate the Grimshaw Chiropractic Care Centre in Grimshaw, Alberta, and the Northwest Wellness Centre in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

H

Gwen Randall-Young, Psychotherapist

Honouring Spirit

It may be time to check in with your soul

ealth consciousness has gone mainstream. You can scarcely open a magazine or newspaper without seeing an article about things that affect your health, whether negatively or positively. The field of alternative health is rapidly expanding and is no longer so “alternative.” For many, healthy living has moved beyond just eating well to a complete lifestyle. Some are looking even further, to anti-aging. We want to live longer, feel better and look great for as long as we can. This is all good. We are learning to honour and care for the bodymind. However, no matter what we do, our journey through this lifetime continues. Despite all our care and planning, time brings changes. If we identify primarily with our bodymind, we may be thrown off by these changes. There is more to us than our body and mind. We are also spirit. Perhaps we need to increase our emphasis on that part of our being, in addition to the physical. If, instead of focusing completely on the physical, we identify more strongly with spirit, we may scarcely be aware of changes to our physical or mental abilities. In fact, it may be that a lively spirit keeps the body younger and the mind more active. Those individuals who seem truly ageless are the ones who allow their spirits to explore. Like curious puppies, they know that there is always something interesting around the next corner. Just as it is vital that we feed the body, it is important that we feed the spirit, give it space to roam freely and allow it to take the lead more often. With age, our soul becomes more deeply aware of itself. As a child grows, selfawareness gradually develops away from egocentricity and towards awareness of self-in-world. The back yard that was once the child’s whole “outside world” loses significance as a wider world opens up.

As we age and soul awareness grows, there is a similar shift away from self-inworld towards spirit-in-eternity. There is a profound letting go of the old world, of a more limited way of seeing things. Like the back yard, this Earth loses significance as we catch glimpses of yet another world beyond the familiar. Just as there are those who are reluctant to venture far from the security and familiarity of their own back yard, so there are those who cling to the security of the physical world, fearful of the unknown beyond. But it is important to pay as much attention to our spiritual health as to our physical wellbeing. When we are aligned with spirit, it is not such a big deal when the body begins to change and our lives shift to a stage of less “doing” and more “being.” Spiritual health, however, is not just for those who have plenty of life experience and maturity. It is important throughout life. When we look upon a newborn as a precious soul who has just happened to manifest in a tiny body, we are honouring that soul. When we teach our children that we are all part of something much bigger, more profound than we can even imagine, we open their hearts and mind to the world beyond computer games and all that they see around them. Awareness of the big Spirit, or the oneness that holds us all, allows us to move beyond the limited world of ego. And it brings responsibility; it humbles us and encourages us to honour others. If we find ourselves caught up in the busyness of life, stressed out, in conflict with others or simply unsatisfied with our lives, these are signs that we have been neglecting our spirit. The well of ego constantly needs refilling. The well of spirit is endless, abundant, nurturing. Have you checked in with your spirit lately? It just might be time. Stone Therapy

Mother Nature’s healing hands A Journey into Tranquility The lighting is soft; the music is soothing. Your body, comfortably nude, is securely draped in a warm cotton sheet.

Your journey begins as you recline on a series of hot and cool flat stones covered by a thick towel. They trace your spine, and your skin welcomes their therapeutic energy, which flows outward like ripples in a pool of water. Within minutes, your body and mind begin to trust and respond to the sensations. As oils are applied to your skin, your breathing slows. The therapist rhythmically glides hot stones across your meridian lines. The waves of heat are at first surprising, but quickly become blissful. As the stones move in a delicate, nonstop ritual, you completely lose track of where the therapist’s hands end and the velvety-soft stones begin. The sequence of movements follows the peaks and curves of your body, careful not to cross your spine or come in contact with bones or joints. Heated chakra stones align and balance chief energy centres, sending their healing properties deep to your core. More heated stones are used to caress and massage your body with sedating warmth. Cool stones are placed on key areas to alleviate stress.

due to its efficiency and healing powers, as well as to increased marketing and media coverage. It is now considered a must-have on spa menus and draws rave reviews for the variety of holistic benefits it delivers. This is a treatment with staying power. The process is like tai chi with stones, combining vascular gymnastics, breathing and meditation with the thermotherapeutic and kinetic application of heated and chilled stones. The journey often takes people by surprise. In today’s rapidly accelerated society, our bodies and minds beg for relief from stress, pain and fatigue. Stone therapy is the marriage of body and energy work, not only repairing underlying problems but also helping us relinquish anxiety and tension.

Natural Healers Two types of stones are used in stone therapy. First, basalt stones are the givers of energy. They transfer heat and electromagnetic energy from their core to the muscle tissue, nerves and internal organs. Second, chilled marble stones cleanse, remove stress and promote circulation and healing. Stone therapy has been shown to be highly beneficial physiologically. Heated stones are

believed to gently stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which slows the heart rate, increases blood flow and boosts immune and lymphatic systems. At the same time, the cool marble stones lining the spine, caressing the neck and tucked under the shoulders are hard at work, swiftly attending to problem areas and infusing the body with healing energy.

Safe and Secure Consumers should choose a stone therapist wisely, noting that the industry has grown too quickly to monitor proper training and practice. Asking questions and checking for credentials from qualified schools will bring you peace of mind and allow you to fully appreciate the natural healing power within the stones as well as within yourself. On your stone therapy journey, you will discover dimensions and sensations within your physical body that you did not know existed. The results of the therapy can be profound or just greatly beneficial, depending on your degree of readiness. It truly is a treatment for our time. Nina Gart is a Reiki master and is the founder and director of Stone Therapy School. Nina also holds a master’s degree in education from Moscow University and is a graduate of the Moscow Institute of Physical Education. For more information on Stone Therapy School programs and upcoming classes in Alberta, visit www.stonetherapyschool.com.

It’s as if Mother Nature is healing you with her own tender hands.

Earthly Delights of the Stone Therapy Experience This ancient healing art, while still unfamiliar to millions, is quickly becoming a treatment of choice in massage clinics and spas all across North America, Europe and Asia. It has steadily been gaining in popularity since 1999 Fall 2011 Guided Synergy Magazine 25

Connecting Soulfully with Pets Keeping all members of the family balanced Y

ou and your pet have lived together happily for many years when suddenly—and, it seems, for no reason at all—he or she starts behaving in ways that are completely out of character. Why is this happening? Animals do this to get our attention when something in their world is out of balance or not working for them anymore. Animals have personalities and spiritual qualities, just like people do. But because animals communicate differently than we do, it can be difficult to understand what they’re trying to tell us. This is where an animal communicator can help. If you notice a change in behaviour or if your animal has become withdrawn or aggressive, a communicator can help you determine the root cause of the issue. Animal communicators help clients access their animals’ minds. Some people might think animal communication is a hoax. Others might think that it’s nothing more than a good understanding of animal behavior. But it’s much more than that. Animal communication is a telepathic link between animal and humans. As an a n i m a l communicator, I connect directly with animals,

understanding their personalities, images, feelings and thoughts. All cellular beings on the planet hold their experiences in their energy fields and relate with each other through energy patterns. Animals are no different. By linking to these energy fields, animal communicators can pick up on what is going in your animal’s world and can relay messages between the two of you. As people look for deeper reasons for their ailments and seek natural ways to heal, many ancient healing methods are being rediscovered. You can do the same for your animals. A communicator can guide you to the area of pain and discomfort that your animal is experiencing, as well as let you know what the animal is thinking and feeling and warn you of potential problems. The cause of the behaviour might be emotional rather than physical. In my practice, I often see animals reacting to energy shifts in the household. If your family is experiencing a major change such as a death, divorce, new addition or move, your animal might act out as a small child would. Not only can animal communicators help you and your animal deal with an ongoing situation, they can also prepare your animal for a potentially traumatic experience, such as going to the vet or staying at a kennel while you’re on vacation. They can let your animal know the reason for the visit and when you will be returning. Animals are very sensitive to our thoughts, emotions, feelings and intentions. Because they love us and want to protect us, they often try to take on our pain to lighten our burden. If someone in your household has an illness or is in chronic pain, an animal communicator can help your animals understand that they are a primary source of joy in your life and that their continued health and happiness are important for your wellbeing. As an animal communicator, my goal is not only to make the lives of animals better, but also to improve

their owners’ lives as well. Animals have so much to teach us—if we let them. They can show us how to trust our intuition, how to experience unconditional love and compassion and how to live authentically. A good communicator should be able to explain how your animal views your life energetically. Over and over again, I have seen how opening up the connection to our animals can change our lives forever. If you want the best for your animals, contact an animal communicator today and see the transformation for yourself. Self-Transformation with Feng Shui

Reflect the change you want to see M

ost people have a vague idea of what feng shui is. They know it has something to do with creating balanced environments and enhancing flow. What they don’t realize is that feng shui is not really about the house at all. Balance and flow in the home are the results of good feng shui, but they are not its ultimate goal. Feng shui is about change. It’s about personal transformation. The environment is both a mirror of and a medium for that transformation, and a qualified feng shui practitioner is the guide. Over the last forty years or so, I have seen more and more people become aware that what happens in our exterior lives reflects our interior lives. For example, many of us on a path of selfdiscovery know that when we are angry with our spouse, we must look inside to see what shadow of ourselves we are disagreeing with. What is on the inside is reflected on the outside. However, most of us don’t look at our homes through this lens of understanding. We don’t recognize that our physical environment is yet another mirror of our interior reality. What we believe on a deep cellular level is very often reflected in our living spaces. Our choices of colours, finishes and symbols and the very design and layout of our homes and offices create a conversation. With proper training or help from a professional, we can engage in that conversation on a more meaningful level. If we learn to correctly assess the image in the mirror, we can make a shift in the person whom it is reflecting. We can steer the conversation by adjusting that image to reflect the change we want to see, rather than living with the status quo. Understanding that the house can be a medium for transformation is the true artistry of feng shui. The building’s interaction with the particular chi of the occupant makes feng shui a powerful 28 Fall 2011 Guided Synergy Magazine

tool. If there were no people to interact with the house, its feng shui would be irrelevant. Now here’s the tricky part: Many books outline the so-called rules of feng shui but fail to address the fact that correct feng shui is a moving target. We are changing all the time and our homes change with us—or at least they should. Using feng shui in a dynamic and sensitive way to create personal transformation is the ultimate in having “good feng shui.” When we make an adjustment that is in alignment with our intentions for a particular area of our lives, the home becomes our ally in personal change. Once we’ve determined our goal, we can pinpoint areas of the home that might not be serving that goal or might actually be causing us pain. We can then apply a cure to those places, in a manner very similar to that of an acupuncturist. If we’ve read the energy correctly, the pain we are experiencing in that life area will be relieved and flow will be improved, creating a space in which transformative experience can occur. Each of us lives in an environment that we have chosen and decorated. It is a reflection of us. If we are experiencing a certain quality of energy in our lives— good or bad—then that same energy is likely in our homes as well. These days, we have many tools to help us in transforming ourselves, and feng shui is an underutilized one. If you want to change your life, look at changing your environment. You’ll likely get a home which feels more balanced and has better flow, too!
