Hereinspaziert!

THE ART OF SYNERGY TO REAP WHAT YOU DIDN’T SOW You come in through one door, specific expectations and objectives in mind, and leave through another, inspired and headed for new goals. That’s how a guest and longterm client of ours once described his experience. Not only is that a very nice compliment, it is rather a perfect summary of what we expect from our daily work and the brand GUDBERG NERGER ourselves. We create connections, tell stories, and set a stage, which allows everyone to see and experience all of what we do. In the process we link brands with people and media against the backdrop of contemporary art and culture and keenly observe, how something new rises from this foundation and sets free unexpected energy. Timeless aesthetic and design is just as important to us as strategically professional project management – no matter what we are dealing with: corporate design or communication campaigns, products in our shop, artworks for our publishing, or exhibits in our gallery. And sometimes all of these disciplines miraculously merge into one. With a result that was totally unexpected. Come in and see for yourself!

PROJECTS

The specialist, is the future. Lets be the generalist. Of course, it is possible to bundle a wide variety of disciplines under one roof and still be better than a specialist. You just have to be able to do it. And being able to think outside of the box requires the right people, the right stage, the absolute will, and a lot of energy.

»DURING THE PROJECT GUDBERG NERGER WAS QUICK TO DEVELOP A SPOT ON SENSE FOR THE TARGET AUDIENCE. RATHER THAN IN CONFLICT, SOUND ANALYSIS AND CREATIVE CONCEPTION WERE IN PERFECT HARMONY, RENDERING NOT ONLY THE QUALITY OF THE RESULTS BUT THE COOPERATION ITSELF A REAL PLEASURE.« Thomas Brückle, Head of Marketing, Geberit

PROJECTS

For our client Geberit – the European market leader for sanitary ware – we developed an extensive design and communication concept for their target audience: architects. Starting from a blue square as a element of their logo, we created a campaign identity based on cubes – each of them standing for a special service or product. The core is the 75 seconds long animation film “The Cube”. The overall brand presence consists of website, social media, online and PR campaigns as well as creative competitions for architects and young professionals and the highlight: a design furniture – developed by us in close cooperation with Geberit.

»GUDBERG NERGER ARE CONTAGIOUSLY CREATIVE, AN INEXHAUSTIBLE SOURCE OF ENERGY AND INSPIRATION, A STRAIGHT-A PROFESSIONALLY, AND ON THE PERSONAL LEVEL, THEY ARE PEOPLE WITH WHOM YOU WANT TO BE FRIENDS.« Sebastian Drechsler, Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg and one of the operators of PIERDREI Hotel Hafencity Hamburg

PROJECTS

Hamburg‘s Hafencity will be home to one of the most spectacular design hotels, opening doors in 2019. The operators have entrusted us with the development of the corporate design of the family brand and various sub-brands, including a stand-alone gastronomy concept, and the entire communications support before, during, and after the construction phase. We have developed comprehensive measures that work with unusual perspectives, visual surprises, and a lot of storytelling. This becomes evident when looking at the first printed matter, visiting the website, or finally entering one of the rooms. Since the grand opening will still take sometime, we’ll make sure neighbours, future guests, partners, and friends stay curious in the meantime. Be it through an unusual construction site fence or through social media campaigns.

PROJECTS

For us, design is everything. And everything is design. The definition of design can come just as close to the rational as to the emotional. For some it is art, for others commerce. The Hamburg-based “designxport” seeks to stimulate, provide insight and outlook, pose questions, and search for answers in design. We designed the corporate identity, all print products, and the website. Also we developed the “manifest” – a corporate magazine, which provides an overview of what has happened in the space the last twelve months, and plenty of information about what design is able to achieve. Dining can be an experience in and of itself, whether it takes place at a swanky restaurant or comes in the form of takeout from your favorite place. Branding plays a big part in defining how consumers interact with their products, and consequently it has become apparent in recent years that restaurants are stepping up their game with regard to how they present themselves. For Hamburg’s first “Pizza Social Club” we developed a corporate design in close cooperation with the architects from Stephen Williams Associates, including a very dynamic packaging. The design is simple yet successful as it attracts the consumer with its playful typography and unique usage of abstract shapes.

The Hamburg-based architecture firm Stรถrmer Murphy and Partners ranks amongst the biggest notable players on the architecture scene. Numerous of their spectacular buildings make their mark on the Hamburg skyline. In the course of a brand relaunch, they commissioned us to develop a new corporate design, one that is as independent as possible and that consistently resists interchangeability in the industry. Our approach is based on a unique language of shapes, an iconography which is carried across all media and measures and which finds a moving and touching conclusion in an animated film on www.stoermer-partner.de.

PUBLISHING

Print is , dead. Lets make a book. The topic of print makes good fodder for vultures and know-it-alls. Despite the triumph of all things digital and virtual, it goes without saying that nothing can replace the haptic experience of a well-made book. The crux of the craft lies in the ability to have a fresh and modern take on print, to set the proper context for it, to reinvent the usual conception and production processes and, you guessed it, to create new synergies.

Lunch in the shadow of an old tank, a dressed up drag queen in the daily routine of a city, a group of children that pose in front of a car for the camera – Street Photography lives through its momentariness, through surreal and funny, irritating or fascinating, beautiful, grotesque, minimalistic, overcrowded, and opposite scenarios. It celebrates the art to be at the right place at the right time to catch this short moment, that will not return like this for a second time. Sometimes taken secretly, sometimes in direct interaction, photography is created that exhibits the apparent trivial in its particularity.

THE FINEST PHOTOS IN INTERNATIONAL STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

For World Street Photography 5, 19 international curators selected the 212 finest photographs out of 20.777 submissions from 77 countries around the world. The photographers whose work made it into the annual photo book curated by the charitable photography association Kujaja represent 35 different nationalities from Australian to Vietnamese. Proceeds from the sales are donated to a cause selected by the World Street Photography team. In addition to publishing the photo books, GUDBERG NERGER hosts an exhibition upon the book release each year, showcasing the works in large-scale and providing a forum for the growing street photography community.

To paint is to invent. Unlike the inventors who gave the world the wheel, the car, the telephone, or the 3D printer though, the painter is not driven by the prospect of greater convenience for his or her fellow human beings or by a desire to contribute to scientific and technical progress in general. Painters move the world forward by constantly interpreting it in new ways and recreating it in their pictures. This is particularly striking when we look at the ostensibly straightforward paintings of Felix Eckardt. This beautiful book shows Felix Eckardt’ current work and is – due to its design – a work of art itself. The book includes an introduction by Tom R. Schulz, a conversation with the artist by Tania Kibermanis, and comments on his artworks.

Hardcover bound and in vinyl format, it features 36 pages of beautiful artwork and the titular “In Every Move“ embossed in silver letters across the entire cover. Inside, each song’s lyrics is juxtaposed with one of Cate Martin’s paintings; eleven colourspheres in dialogue with the tonality of the songs that make up a unique product unparalleled on the art book market. The lyrics and paintings are prefaced and concluded by two explanatory pieces of writings, penned by Dirk Westerkamp, professor of theoretical philosophy, and music journalist Daniel Koch.

“How many books leave one feeling like no longer knowing, what’s the wrong way round and what isn’t, what’s the rear and what the front,” asks German weekly Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. With her travelogue, which is already being sold in its fifth edition, Helena Henneken achieves just that. And not only since the design follows the Persian reading direction – from back to front, from right to left. The author tells the story of a journey: 59 days in Iran. One woman with a backpack – cross-country. Surprising experiences, observations, discoveries – and above all encounters: with cosmopolitan capital-dwellers and Kurdish villagers, mullahs and anarchistic students, policemen and artists, illegal boyfriends and countless “Ali Schumachers.“

ISBN: 978-3-945772-16-4 STEFAN KUHNIGK, 2017 21 Ă— 21 CM 208 PAGES HARDCOVER ENGLISH EUR 24,90

Coffee is spilled everyday. When designer and copywriter Stefan Kuhnigk found a coffee spill on a piece of paper at the office one day, he instantly felt creatively inspired. He turned the stain into a monster and the Coffeemonsters were born. He hasn’t stopped since and draws a new one every day. He only uses the best coffee for his stains and allows the paper to dry for four to six hours until he draws on the stain. Thus the stain becomes a tiny, happy monster, embedded in a happy little story. Like Jim or Bobby, two of over 550 monsters that are known, loved, liked, and shared by more than 30,000 people all over the world. This book comes with an extra of eight detachable postcards.

Moral Phobia is unnatural, unconcerned and undisciplined. He smokes and drinks, eats meat, doesn’t do sports and was once again the last guest last night. Moral Phobia neglects social media and self-optimisation offers and advocates for the silly and strange, the foul and foreign, the opaque, awkward, superfluous, and disturbing – in the hope of more chaotic and diverse times. “It begs the question, whether the pretty promises of the present are really as rosy for the individual,” says trend researcher and author Judith Mair in a Berliner Zeitung interview. Moral Phobia describes current phenomena and disciplinarian tendencies of standardisation, optimisation, and moralisation in 566 entries.

The works depicted in this book go all the way back to 2007. At that time Michael Peltzer had just reached the master-class student status with Professor Michael van Ofen – a master-class student of Gerhard Richter himself – at the art academy Münster. During this period pieces emerged that would define his creative work over the next ten years. Somebody once defined art as the artist’s being able to do what he wants and there being no limit to what he wants. In that sense Michael Peltzer certainly is a great artist.

The G20 summit 2017 itself and the protests it elicited leave their mark on the city as well as many unanswered questions. “Tage im Juli” showcases pictures of six photojournalists, who documented the different forms of protests sweeping the streets of Hamburg. Many of those were the product of long-term planning, whereas others were spontaneous reactions to the developments on the ground. In order to better understand and classify these activities and give voice to as many of those involved in the days of the summit as possible, more than a dozen interviews with with representatives of the police, labour unions, political parties, protest initiators, demonstrators, and residents supplement the photographs in the book.

A twenty euro bill can exchange hands as protection money in the afternoon and end up in the donation box for a school benefit a few hours later. Besides its financial value, money always carries a non-material and moral value as well. Depending on its origin and destination, it influences society at large. In the years 2016 and 2017, the Hamburg-based artist “Til von Push” has designed nearly 100 different forms of money on carton and installed them in public spaces to raise awareness for this issue. This art box contains twelve double-sided collectible cards and a 56-page booklet.

Yesterday’s news – it’s still present. Just not in yesterday’s paper, but in the pages of this book. Since there is still an abundance of printed media, which go straight from the reader’s hands into the recycling bin, Dirk Bathen gives his artistic redactions another go. Michel Lamoller, born in the Black Forest region of Germany, creates art that bridges the gap between photography, sculpture, and installation. Although his work is based on photography, it embodies sculptural volume. Residing within a unique dimension where various forms of art are merged, generating something new in their synthesis, the artist creates work that crosses boundaries and defies classification into genres. This freedom enables his work to develop its enormous presence. Several different layers of a photographic subject are placed on top of one another and then carved with a scalpel. In this manner, the artist constructs reliefs and three-dimensional spaces are generated within the images. His works deal with questions concerning these three-dimensional spaces.

THE SONGBIRD‘S SUICIDE

ISBN: 978-3-940558-45-9 NILS KASISKE, 2009 22,5 × 22,5 CM 88 PAGES HARDCOVER GERMAN / ENGLISH EUR 24,90

“The Songbird‘s Suicide” exhibits the artwork of the Hamburg-based artist Nils Kasiske. With his collection of filigree and monochrome illustrations and objects of suicidal songbirds, Kasiske presents a multi-layered and conceptually elaborate piece of work. His first publication can be read as an aesthetic comment on dominating design directives and our digital world but as well as a series of drawings that subtly describes underlying structures of every day life in the city. At the same time, Nils Kasiske turns out to be a storyteller: With his seemingly anthropomorphic protagonists – the songbirds – he often shows real-life events – for instance the suicides of Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Monroe, or the entrepreneur Merckle – that always show set pieces that could be described as the self-chosen end of an individual and personal life story.

ART IS BLABLA

ISBN: 978-3-940558-42-8 MORITZ KALTHEUNER, 2009 23 × 32 CM 60 PAGES & POSTCARDS-INLAY GERMAN EUR 9,90

Is art communication? With his photographic documentation of graffitied phrases on the walls of Hamburg and Berlin, Moritz Kaltheuner provides more than just a current collection of amusing catchphrases. Rather, he sheds light on a whole world of unexpected typographic curiosities, which stretches from humorous, bizarre, and sometimes completely nonsensical and orthographically questionable statements to extreme and politically motivated slogans. Yet, no matter the message that adorns the public space: Moritz Kaltheuner shows how the street becomes a medium of public communication – accessible to anyone regardless of background, education, motivation, or personality. And: anyone can join the conversation and comment on the writings on the wall.

GALLERY

Art is , blabla. Lets talk about art. Galleries are in fashion and emerging on every corner. However, the concept of pure solo exhibitions has long gone out of style. So if you’re not interested in entertaining a couple of art show tourists with sparkling wine, you have to conceive of and present art in a different context. You have to create interesting, inspiring, and sometimes irritating experiences.

TIMO VON EICKEN Timo von Eicken (*1977) was born in Hamburg and still lives in his city of origin, which is his home and source of inspiration at the same time. Because friends always called him Nono, von Eicken, who studied graphic design, started his career under the pseudonyms Mr. Nonski and Nonski. His early work was based on strong graphic forms before he more recently turned to figurative painting. Today, his paintings often reflect the different phases of his oeuvre making the images both unique and expressive. Von Eicken produces large format collages of acrylic on canvas which tell intense stories full of paradoxes: besides the graphic elements, it is mainly the attributes of the human beings which you would usually try to conceal that von Eicken focuses on.

SVENJA MAASS Originally from Bielefeld, Svenja Maaß (*1977) studied Fine Arts in Braunschweig and is currently living in Hamburg. In ‚her pictures and collages, Svenja Maaß knits together different elements that figure into complex wholes. Her protagonists are often animals, and in earlier works human beings. Unlike humans, animals cannot be identified according to clothing, jewellery and other formalities; they don’t obey such codes, and for Maaß they are more original, timeless figures. The precisely drawn, partly surreal motives form bits of stories with open endings. Svenja Maaß uses different backgrounds – canvases, metal, or transparent parchment – which allows the subject to almost float in the picture. The complex images go against the audience’s expectation and are not easy to decipher spontaneously. Svenja Maaß describes her method as a process which forces both her and the viewer to rethink again and again. Only slowly, the different parts are allowed to form a whole.

UWE LEWITZKY From his vantage point in Zurich, Uwe Lewitzky takes a look at artistic questions through the lens of urban life and urban experience. While his cleverly-mad textual works are marked by a sense of formality in design, humour is the foundation of their content. In this way Lewitzky manages to create a productive confusion that enables free thinking and discernment. Writing as an art form has long been established as part of the artistic canon: from Lawrence Weiner to RÊmy Zaugg artists explore and exhibit the potential of the painted word. Uwe Lewitzky’s works distinguish themselves by their individualistic aesthetic and a strong sense of irony.

JILL TEGAN DOHERTY Jill Tegan Doherty (*1983) is an Artist from Nottingham, England. After completing her foundation course at Kingston upon Thames, she went on to graduate from Chelsea College of Art and Design, part of the London Institute, in 2006. After a successful period living in London, having participated in many exhibitions, including The Royal Academy’s summer exhibition, the Mall Galleries as part of the Society of Women Artists’ annual exhibition and the Millennium Gallery in St. Ives for an exhibition curated by Allice Herrick to name a few, Doherty is now infiltrating the Berlin art scene after moving to the city in November 2011. Doherty’s work has hitherto been filled with twisted geological forms and unnerving combinations of human and animalistic physiques. The uncertain and unseen are given a platform to be visually digested. The canvas becomes a stage for the subconscious to perform its role in the physical world, to act out its twisted plays.

DENNIS BUSCH Dennis Busch (*1971) is artist, author, musician and producer. Born in the Dutch town of Amstelveen, he now lives in Spain with his family. Busch cuts the world into fragments, mixes them up and creates a new, irrational reality. People, animals, symbols, historical artefacts, body parts, and everyday objects – all taken from found photography – are cut out of their context, glued together, overwritten, and put into a new conversation. He engages in the medium of collage to open up borders and trick time. Past, present, and future are combined at will. Led by his scalpel, Dennis Busch is a mad surgeon who cuts the belly of society open. Without having a concrete result in mind, he plays with ideas of convention, beauty, and order. He’s only finished once he’s satisfied with the chaos he creates. His montages are not products of pure randomness, however, but concentrated anarchy. Dennis Busch helps the world comment on itself through copying and pasting.

UWE SCHMIDT Following his apprenticeship in scenic painting, Uwe Schmidt (*1967), born in Oldenburg Germany, graduated from painter to artist. After having successfully completed his time at Staatstheater Oldenburg, he established himself as a freelance artist in Berlin in 1993. He focused on developing and implementing surface technologies as well as conceptional works in the field of colours and space. His many commissions led him across Europe, however, for his artistic progress another criterion was more crucial: the intense contact with different materials and techniques. This caused his experimentation in the field of abstract painting. Since 2004, Uwe Schmidt is working as an artist in his studio in Berlin Mitte where he exhibits his work in the context of a gallery.

Selling is , analysis. Lets sell what we love. Each shop can be optimised according to mere sales and target group specifications. What‘s left are the fast-movers and slow-sellers. And usually another soulless sales machine. We sell products we love, from creators and manufacturers we love, and to customers who love us for that very reason. Funnily enough – it works.
