Publishers Note It’s finally spring —one of our favorite times of the year here in the Roanoke Valley! Roanoke is filled with amazing outdoor activities in the spring. One of our favorite activites to enjoy as a family is the Roanoke River Greenway. Get out your bikes and enjoy a springtime ride through the heart of Roanoke, and maybe stop at Blue Cow Ice Cream along the way if it’s hot enough.

a lot of camps were not ready with info this year in March, so we felt it was only right to make sure we updated things and put the updated info out there for all families and partners.

In the coming months, Roanoke will play host to a TON of outdoor events, including the return of the Blue Ridge Kite Festival, one of the very first events we ever attended when we began this magazine! Community School’s Strawberry Festival also returns in early May, this event has been a staple in Roanoke for 42 years!

Stay safe!

We are hoping that with this warmer weather and the beginning of Spring that the two year strugggle with Covid is winding down and that all of our summer days are filled with fun, friends and a little less worry.

38 Spring Cleaning Your Finances

Get some tips on how to clean up your finances this spring from Freedom First Credit Union!

Check Your Credit Report Before closing out the year, it’s a good idea to check your credit report. This step will help catch any discrepancies before the new year begins. You can obtain a free credit report each year from the three major credit bureaus at www.annualcreditreport.com.

Create a Savings Plan This is one of the best times to begin a savings plan. After all, if you can start a successful savings plan now, you have a better chance of continuing this plan throughout the year.

Seek Expert Advice The spring is a great time to review your finances and future plans. With the help of a professional financial advisor, it’s often much easier to create a financial outlook that aligns with your current financial situation.

Financial advisors help you assess your current finances, determine long-term financial goals, and create a plan to help you achieve them. They can also help you set financial goals such as paying off debt, reducing your overall spending, and saving and investing for the future.

We’re Here to Help! We’ve helped our members save hundreds of dollars a month just by taking a look at their accounts and finding ways you can save and earn more. Make an appointment to review your accounts, update your information with Freedom First, and reach your own goals! Schedule a complimentary one-on-one meeting with one of our bankers, either in person, over the phone, or virtually, and review your accounts with Freedom First. Spring Cleaning Your Finances Spring is the time to plan for the year. Whether it’s a summer vacation, academic expenses, gifts, entertainment, or anything in between, the magic of spring is contagious. But did you know that spring is also one of the best seasons for financial planning for the upcoming year? With most people spending lots of money during the festive season, there is a need for budgeting in the new year. Once the holiday season passes, many are faced with piles of debt and are looking to renew their financial outlook. Keeping your finances and budget top of mind at the start of the year is the best plan to ensure you don’t end the year with financial stress. Here are some financial guidelines to help ensure your spring and summer seasons are full of joy.

Read on page 20

Consider Your Outstanding Debt If you find yourself heading into the spring season with a mound of debt, there are options to help you alleviate this financial burden. By utilizing a credit card balance transfer or a debt consolidation loan, you’re able to get a handle on your debt and lower the total amount you are paying. For example, let’s say you have multiple credit card balances you’re currently paying. Most likely, these credit cards all have different interest rates. By transferring the balances to either a lower-rate credit card or a debt consolidation loan, you’re able to reduce your payments since you will only be paying one loan with one interest rate.

What makes Bubbles POP? an at-home science experiment

Whether a bubble pops when it comes in contact with a solid surface depends on many factors, including the surface properties of the material. You probably know that different materials have different properties, some of which you can see or feel, like color or hardness. However, materials have other properties that are harder to detect directly. Surfaces can be hydrophobic (repel water) or hydrophilic (attract water). You can observe this by dropping water onto it and seeing whether the drops form big beads (hydrophobic) or spread out in thin sheets (hydrophilic). Whether a material is hydrophobic or hydrophilic depends strongly on its surface roughness. Some materials, like sandpaper, have macroscopic surface features, meaning you can feel the bumps and see them with your naked eye. However, other materials have microscopic surface features. Even if a material looks and feels

smooth to you, it might have very tiny bumps or pores. These can actually help the material repel water, because the surface of the water, held together by surface tension, is unable to penetrate the tiny gaps in the material. Other materials, like paper or sponges, have larger gaps that help them absorb water. All of these properties, along with factors like how fast the bubble is moving and whether the surface is wet, can affect the likelihood that the bubble will pop when it lands.

Our Questions: Look at the materials in the room around you. What properties can you see? What properties can you feel? Do you think any of the materials will catch a bubble without popping it?

Materials and Equipment Bubble solution. You can buy some or make your own at home by mixing 1 cup of water with 2 tbsp of dish soap and 1 tbsp of glycerin or light corn syrup. Bubble wand Small bowl or other container to hold your bubble solution Different horizontal materials and surfaces to test, such as: paper, aluminum foil, wax paper, the floor (wood, tile, carpet, etc.), tables/ countertops, etc. You can try any material or surface that you can find around your house — just make sure it is large and flat enough that you can easily blow bubbles onto it.

Directions: Try to blow a single bubble onto your first material. It is OK if you blow more than one bubble, but you will have to keep track of all of them, so try not to blow too many. You can ask a volunteer to watch the bubbles if that helps. Record your results, making sure to test each material 3-4 times each. Based on your results, which material was best at catching bubbles? Which material was the worst? How do your results compare to your predictions?

Featured Camp: STEAM Discovery Academy

There’s a new option for summer youth programming coming to Roanoke area families! STEAM Discovery Academy, founded in Charlottesville, is expanding this summer and will provide engaging learning experiences for students in Roanoke and Richmond. What is STEAM? STEM dates to the 1950’s; though it wasn’t introduced to American education until the mid 2000’s as the call was made to focus on increasing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics learning in the US. Because STEM learning inspires innovation, problem solving and critical thinking, while leveraging technology and the scientific method to solve problems it’s been gaining momentum ever since. STEAM takes the principles of STEM a step further, incorporating the arts and with that creativity and design think-

ing, which are essential ingredients for innovation. Art education allows students to learn things in a more open-ended way and make them applicable to real life, while including the “A” promotes collaboration across disciplines. At STEAM DA, art plays a vital role in exposing more students to STEM subjects, especially those students who are traditionally under-represented. Students who take Art Lab, Ceramics, or Paint and Mixed Media are introduced to scientific concepts like chemistry and viscosity in a comfortable setting. During the week, in passing and in demonstrations, they can see what the other courses are working on and become interested in disciplines they may not have thought they would enjoy. Executive Director, Lisel Bruscia, shared the following, “In 2017, STEAM had no girls in Robotics, Coding, or Drone specific programs. As students were exposed, this changed - both ways. In 2021, 50% of those programs were girls, but even more telling, 50% of middle school

ceramics was boys. The exposure works both ways”. So what makes STEAM Discovery Academy unique? Founded in 2017, by Mike Bruscia, a longtime science educator and current Middle School Science teacher, STEAM Discovery Academy offers summer and year round learning opportunities annually to hundreds of students in the Charlottesville, VA area. In collaboration with his wife, Lisel, the Bruscia’s look to inspire students to aspire to careers in STEAM fields. STEAM DA specializes in Edutainment - the blend of Education and Entertainment. SDA presents students of all ages with scientific concepts and teaches the science and deeper understanding of respective disciplines. Students apply these concepts and learn to solve challenges. SDA incorporates toys, tools, and materials into the challenges making the process active, fun, and engaging.

Summer Camp Guide 2022

Mike Bruscia explained “hands-on learning is at the heart of what we do. As educators, we provide a framework for discovery, but allow the students to explore their way to solutions. We support their learning, but there is no one solution. We call this process ‘Creative Collision’, when students start riffing off others’ ideas, encouraging them to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions. It’s similar to when you hear musicians jamming, we do that with ideas.” In addition to traditional STEAM learning, SDA incorporates leadership concepts to build resilience, confidence, and communication skills. Examples of failure and perseverance from Apollo 13 to SpaceX are leveraged to demonstrate that part of problem solving is taking (calculated) risks, making mistakes, and persevering. Teamwork is essential to success in challenges, allowing an opportunity to explore effective communication strategies. The blend of hands-on activities and soft skills provides a unique opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills, needed for future careers in STEAM. STEAM DA in Roanoke In 2022, STEAM Discovery Academy will launch summer programming at Roanoke Catholic School. “At STEAM, we pride ourselves on combining fun, interactive workshops, led by experienced educators, with academic learning designed to spark curiosity. Roanoke Catholic School and their facilities are the perfect setting for our newest campus. We are thrilled to offer our programs to all local

Roanoke families this summer,” said Lisel Bruscia. Summer programs are week-long, fullday or half-day experiences, centered around a specific theme. Options range from Gadgets & Gizmos to Paint & Mixed Media to Robotics and Coding. A typical day begins with drop-off between 8:30A-9:00A and ends between 5:00P-5:30P, while students may be picked up early for activities. Each day has four workshops, beginning with a community and collaboration building activity, followed by a workshop. Students have a snack and movement break, followed by a second workshop and lunch. Following recess, students have two more workshops and a snack break. Students are encouraged to be active during their breaks with games and activities provided. Breaks are essential to their creativity and success in the workshops. Interested in learning more about STEAM DA? Summer Camp Guide 2022

Featured Camp: Camp Alta Mons

Many parents can be quite nervous about sending their child off to camp for the first time. Where will they sleep? What will they eat? Will their counselor notice their needs and talents? Parents are sometimes more anxious than campers on check-in day, and understandably so. Your child is precious and unique to you—all children are—and you want them to have the best experience possible. So, here are 5 simple tips to make your child’s summer camp experience the best it can be! 1. Start talking about camp ahead of time with your child so that you both can get questions answered and know what to expect from the camp of your choice. Calling the camp office and asking for a personal tour, a copy of the menu, or anything else is not asking too much! Camp staff are eager

to help you and to make your family’s camp experience as special and memorable as possible. 2. Start talking with your child several weeks before camp starts about what it will be like—how they will be sleeping in a cabin, making new friends, learning new skills, and whatever else the camp might entail! This way your child will start to get excited for camp and their anxiety on checkin day can be calmed by all of the fun conversations you have had. 3. Try not to emphasize how much you will miss your child while they are gone. Instead, try to focus on how excited you are for them and how you can’t wait to hear all of the details about their week away. Sometimes parents, in an effort to let their child know how much they are loved, burden their children with worry and stress while they are at camp. Homesickness can sometimes spur from the thought

Article written by: Camp Alta Mons Program Director, Meredith Petty

“I need to go home because my parent will miss me too much if I stay.” While feelings of missing home are natural, letting your child know that you are excited for their experience can help ease their worry and potential homesickness. 4. Let your child help you pack their bags for camp. Campers often feel more comfortable at camp when they know exactly what they have and where it is in their bag. This can help the first night go more smoothly, and cut down on lost and found items at the end of the week too! Stick to the packing list and know that many camps have lots of “extras” for campers who forgot to pack something. 5. On check-in day, encourage your child to start building relationships with their counselors and fellow campers immediately. Camp staff will be playing name games and introducing other “get to know you” activities, so

prepare your camper to open up and share a bit about themselves with their new friends. It can help to include a bit about your child’s interests and hobbies on the camp registration form to assist their counselor in getting to know them.

Following these steps will help smooth out some of the bumps along the road in your child’s first camp experience. At Camp Alta Mons, we are committed to helping make your child’s week here one that is full of meaningful experiences, new friendships, and a loving community. One camper parent said this about her daughter’s experience at Alta Mons over the years: “Camp Alta Mons has become the highlight of my child’s summer. It’s a place for singing, laughing, exploring, and making new friends. I love that my child can experience some independence while knowing that she is safe and under the very best care at her home away from home.” With day only, half-week, and

Rachel’s Reads

by Rachel Levine

Moms are amazing 24/7. In May, however, we set aside time to honor the incredible women who care for us, inspire us, and love us all year long. Along with breakfast in bed, flowers, and hand-made cards, consider adding some read alouds to your family’s Mother’s Day celebration. Truly good books have the power to speak the unspoken words of our hearts, and these books all testify to the deep bond between mothers and their children.

Mama, Do You Love Me

The Mommy Book

There is nothing like the love of a mother. Mama, Do You Love Me by Barbara M. Joose tells the story of a young girl wondering if there are limits to her mother’s affection. Over and over again she questions if her mother would love her if she made a mistake or poor decision. And over and over again her mother explains that while she might be sad or worried, her love for her daughter is unending and unconditional. Beautiful illustrations of mother and child by Barbara Lavallee enhance this sweet testament to a mother’s love.

Moms come in all various varieties. They have different hobbies and interests. They have different jobs and ways of dressing. They even have different favorite activities they like to do with their kids. The Mommy Book by Todd Parr celebrates both the incredible diversity of moms, and the one thing that unites them all - their love for their children. Bright and bold illustrations draw children right in to this fun board book that reminds readers that all moms are uniquely and fabulously awesome.

Lullaby

by Langston Hughes and Sean Qualls The poet Langston Hughes knew how to get to the heart of the matter. His beautiful poem Lullaby (For a Black Mother) is a song of adoration from a mother to her beloved child. The miracle of one’s own baby’s existence and the sweetness of a mother’s love flow through Hughes’ pen. Artist Sean Qualls’ joyful illustrations further enhance this precious lullaby and homage to motherhood. Lullaby (For a Black Mother) is a book to be cherished.

Mars Needs Moms by Barkley Breathed

Parenting is hard and often moms feel unappreciated during the chaos of day-to-day life with kids. A little humor can help a lot and Mars Needs Moms by Berkeley Breathed fits the bill 100%. In this silly tale Milo finds his mother super annoying. All she seems to do is boss him around and he is sick of it. All that changes for Milo when aliens arrive to kidnap the moms of earth for themselves. Milo’s mom is whisked away to Mars and Milo has to rescue her. A new appreciation for his mom comes through and saves the day in this laugh-out-loud story.

Saturday

by Oge Mora Real life is busy. Work and school keep us on our toes and our calendars full. Saturday by Oge Mora tells the close-to-home tale of Ava and her mother. Ava’s favorite day of the week is Saturday because Saturday is her and her mom’s special day out-and-about town. One Saturday, however, everything, and I mean everything, goes wrong. One plan after another falls through and nothing seems to be working out. In the end Ava is reminded that what really makes Saturdays special isn’t outings or special activities, but being with her mom. Togetherness is the true magic.

As a parent, instilling healthy eating habits in your children at an early age can aid in proper growth and development. Eating well goes a long way toward maintaining a healthy weight, increasing energy levels, and improving moods while also reducing risk of obesity and other chronic issues such as heart disease and diabetes later in life. Set your children on a path to making lifelong nutritious choices with these tips: Foster independence. Allowing your children to help with shopping and meal prep can aid in their ability to take ownership of what they’re eating. Start by divvying up easier tasks like setting the table, then work toward them creating snacks and meals on their own. These Rainbow Fruit Parfaits are simple for kids to assemble — just set the ingredients out and let them layer — and can serve as a healthful on-the-go breakfast or after-school snack. Offer balanced options. Children require balanced diets made up of all three major food groups, including fruits and vegetables, for proper development. Looking for the Produce for Kids logo next to nutritional, family-friendly items at the grocery store is an easy way to identify healthy food choices while also supporting local organizations that help children and families in need.

Be a role model.

For example, a recipe like this Rainbow Buddha Bowl provides a combination of fresh and roasted vegetables that can be customized to meet your family’s tastes. Thinking about how many colors you eat in a day may inspire your kids to do the same, which can foster a lifetime of healthy eating habits.
