“WIC has been such a great support to me and my family, especially with breastfeeding my first son. My plan was to stop breastfeeding at 6 months. But the breastfeeding staff at the Roanoke WIC program helped me keep up my milk supply while going back to work with the use of my own personal pump. Grayson is now 21 months and we are going strong! Thanks WIC for the great support and the nutrients that you have provided me and my son.” - Kristen and Grayson

Dee Reynolds Cassy Childress Have you been out enjoying the beautiful weather lately? Even though our area has been hit with near nightly thunderstorms, the days have been amazing! I’ve seen dozens of hikers and runners going up and down the Mill Mountain Trails by my house (and may have joined them once or twice!) Summertime almost always means outdoor BBQs and parties. We’ve included some great summer cocktail recipes in this issue, as well as ways to keep your outdoor spaces looking good while not wasting too much water. One of the reasons I love this community is the constant pushing to make our area better. From Roanoke’s RYSE program with United Way to the simple acts of kindness that I’ve spotted. We’ve also included a heartwarming story about a service dog- Boboand how he has helped his entire family. We’re excited now that summer is in full swing! There are dozens of festivals and town events going on! Don’t forget to check out the event calendar on page 10 to see what’s happening in your area of the valley!

Tips For Growing A Water-Conservative Garden • Water at night or in the early morning when the sun is least likely to evaporate the moisture. This allows as much of the water to penetrate to your plant’s roots instead of evaporating. • Build beds that encourage soil to stay damp as long as possible. Some ways to do this include digging the bed deeper to help loosen the soil prior to planting. This gives roots the chance to go reach deeper and gain access to where water might be more available. Also, once planted, cover the bed with a good layer of mulch or compost. This will help keep the soil good and moist.

Families can decorate their homes

with colorful flowers and bring healthy, home-grown foods to the table with gardens. Gardening, however, can use quite a bit of water, and in states struck by drought, it’s important to conserve as much water as possible. If you’re living in an area of the country under drought advisement, you can still have a garden this year if you carefully plan what you plant, how you plant it, and how you give it the water it needs. Here are some waterconservation tips for growing a garden and using the least amount of water possible: • Choose plants that thrive in drier conditions. Vegetables like corn, spinach, mustard greens and some beans are drought-tolerant, and desert rose and snake plant are beautiful landscaping plants that need less water.

• Water only where it’s needed so it doesn’t go to waste. When you use a lawn sprinkler to water your garden, much of the spray misses your flowers and vegetables and ends up on the grass, the sidewalk or the neighbor’s yard. Make certain the water gets to the roots of your plants via a drip-irrigation system like Raindrip. Raindrip irrigation uses 70 percent less water than underground sprinklers and frees the user from constantly hauling around hoses because the system stays in your garden all summer long. The Raindrip kit, found at raindrip. com/drip-kits, automates the entire process, saving you time and water. Just turn the kit on – without needing to get out the hose - and if you really want to conserve water, set the timer to let the water run for a specific amount of time each day. On rainy days, simply set the timer ahead to the next day so water is not wasted.*

• Raise vegetable crops during the rainy season. Many areas of the country have a cooler rainy season. Peas, leafy greens, radishes and other vegetables with short growing seasons are great for planting early in the spring and sometimes again late in the fall. Because temperatures are cooler and the early and late seasons tend to produce more rainfall, you can grow vegetables using less water. Drought affects all areas of the country during different years, so even if you aren’t living in a drought situation now, you could experience one next year or several years down the road. It’s important to know what steps you can take to be more water conservative when it comes to your garden. Apply these tips to your vegetables and flowers this year to see how successful you can be at reducing the amount of water needed to grow your plants.

Service Dog Provides Support For Entire Family It’s not difficult to spot Bobo’s red service dog vest. Bobo serves as Danielle “Dani” Kneisly’s seizure assistance dog, and the two are constantly by each other’s sides. However, it is important to look beyond the vest and fully understand the help he brings to 20-year-old Kneisly, her family and those around her. Kneisly has a condition called isolated pachygyria, a neurological brain disorder, which causes recurrent seizures. At worst, Kneisly has experienced up to 40 seizures in a month, 18-20 a day, causing constant worrying for her family. In the hopes of gaining some peace of mind, Kneisly’s mother, Kim Bish, began researching seizure assistance dogs from 4 Paws for Ability, and soon realized it would be the perfect fit for her daughter. Seizure assistance dogs are specifically trained for those living with epilepsy or seizure disorders and can help alert to its handler’s seizures. Bobo was matched with Kneisly over four years ago. Bish recalls the instant bond formed between the two when they attended training at the 4 Paws for Ability facility prior to bringing Bobo home for the first time. “He would immediately lay right beside

Dani in her bed, and I just knew that he was going to fit in fine.” Bobo is trained to alert to Kneisly’s seizures and can even pre-alert to her seizures. Aside from barking to let those around

Kneisly know she’s having a seizure, he will sit or lay on her to prevent her from standing up and hurting herself. Bobo has provided greater independence for Kneisly and her

family. Before, it was difficult for Bish to sleep through the night for fear of her daughter experiencing a seizure while she slept, a common occurrence for those with seizure disorders. Now with the help of Bobo, Bish has peace of mind knowing that Bobo will bark and wake her up if Kneisly is experiencing a seizure. She is also comforted by the fact Bobo can provide her daughter security throughout the night. In addition to alerting to seizures, Bobo assists Kneisly with mobility and helps her walk - one of the many ways service dogs can help serve their owners. The cost to train and place a service dog with a child with disabilities at 4 Paws for Ability starts at $22,000. However, families are required to help raise $15,000 to qualify for a free dog. The

organization offers a number of tools to help families fundraise, and you too can make a difference by donating to a family working towards their goal or providing much needed supplies to help the organization.

In support of people like Kneisly and her family, Eisai Inc. created the special program, Magnolia Paws for Compassion, which seeks to increase access to animal assistance and raise awareness of the many benefits that interactions can provide to those coping with illness, like a seizure disorder. For more stories like Kneisly’s or to see how you can get involved in bringing awareness to the benefits of animals for those with illness, please visit MagnoliaPawsforCompassion.com. Beyond seizure assistance dogs, there are many other types of service dogs, including hearing ear dogs, autism assistance dogs, diabetic alert dogs, and facilitated guide dogs, among others. The impact Bobo has made on Kneisly and her family is incredible, and Bish advises that others interested in getting a service dog should do it, saying, “You will not be disappointed at the change it’ll make in your life, and the freedom and peace of mind it’ll bring you.”

Upcycle your summer treasures with these 5 DIY tips

The months of summer are a perfect time to hunt for hidden one-of-a-kind treasures buried in neighborhood yard sales. Whether it’s an old wooden dining chair, coffee table or bookshelf, there is beautiful potential in what others view as old and outdated. And with just a few handy touch-ups, it’s easy to transform yesterday’s furniture trends into today’s style. Follow these five steps to begin your DIY furniture makeover today. 1. Lose the dirt and return the natural shine. A dry microfiber cloth is all you need to remove dust and loose dirt. If the wood appears dull or faded, create a polishing solution of half olive oil and half white vinegar to restore its natural shine. Apply the mixture with a cheese cloth and use a clean soft cloth to blot any excess liquid.

2. Repair the imperfections. Even wooden furniture with gouges or scratches can be restored to its former glory. Apply DAP Plastic Wood All-Purpose Wood Filler and simply wait for the filler to dry before sanding, painting and staining. If you’re a beginning DIYer, take advantage of new Plastic Wood-X, which goes on pink and dries natural to signal when it’s time to move to the next step - taking the guesswork out of drying time. Both of these wood fillers dry with minimal shrinking and no cracking, are low in odor, and clean up easily with water. 3. Enhance the color. After the wood filler dries, sand and stain the area to create an invisible repair. If you wish to paint the furniture, sand the entire table or chair to prepare the wood for new primer and paint. White paint gives traditional-style furniture a vintage touch, while adding designs

with clean lines provide a more contemporary edge. Bold colors, such as turquoise, can also transform your new furniture to become a statement piece in the home. 4. Add your personal touch. Along with saving money and helping the environment, upcycling furniture is beneficial because it provides an opportunity to create truly one-of-akind designs. Furniture stencils make it easy to restore wooden pieces with eye-catching patterns, or you can add prints using fabric and wallpaper. If you prefer a simple style, a fresh coat of paint and new hardware are all you need to update a table or dresser. You can even repurpose furniture to achieve a unique look. A small TV stand can become your bedroom’s nightstand. An old wooden changing table might be the perfect place to display your succulents and herbs. Get creative and try out a few different ideas to discover the best use for your new find. 5. Keep a repair kit on hand for later. Most wooden furniture will likely need a touch-up from time to time. With DAP’s Wood Finish Repair Kit, you can repair and restore the furniture you already have when scratches, small nail holes or other minor blemishes appear. Don’t let the small imperfections turn you away from bringing a beautiful piece of old furniture into your home. By following a few easy steps, you can breathe new life into any wooden furniture you find this summer. To learn more about Plastic Wood, Plastic Wood-X and other DAP products, visit www.dap.com.

Sweet iced tea and sangria are as much hallmarks of summer as baseball and barbecues. Cocktails are a great way to cool off when temperatures climb, or they can help heat up any celebration. If you’re looking to add some fresh excitement to seasonal beverages, spices, spirits and fun presentations can make summer sips shine. Color your cocktails Summer is bursting with color, from lush flowers and foliage to brighter hues in clothes and even the rainbow shades of children’s ice pops. Let the bounty of colors inspire your summer cocktails. Create cheer with bright greens by muddling basil or mint in the clear spirit of your choice. Fire up your guests with brilliant reds courtesy of fresh summer tomato juice. Liquefied watermelon makes any cocktail pretty pink, while crushed raspberries or blueberries add a rich, textured appeal. Spice it up Whether you want to add a zing of heat to the coolness of a cocktail, or balance the sweetness of a mixed drink, spices and herbs are a great way to layer flavors in beverages. Herbs such as basil and mint are staples for summer cocktails, but experimenting with other spices and seasonings can yield some memorable combinations. The heat of chipotle salt can be the perfect foil for sweet, fruit-based beverages. Cardamom adds an exotic flare to traditional cocktails like Moscow Mules, while traditional iced tea gets an Asian treatment with the addition of Five Spice Powder.

Playful presentations Summer cocktails are all about cool fun, and you can underscore that theme by serving your unique summer sips in creative containers. For example, instead of pouring sangria in a wine glass, try serving it in a clear dessert bowl to show off the bright colors. Plus, the wide bowl will make it easier to access and eat the fruit when the sangria is gone. Serve your spiced ice tea in mason jars with a lemon slice for garnish. Or, queue up your Cardamom Moscow Mule in a copper mug to give guests the cooling visual effect of condensation on metal.

Five Spice Iced Tea Cocktail The classic summer beverage, iced tea gets an Asian-inspired treatment in this recipe. Ingredients: 6 cups water 2 large oranges, quartered, plus more for garnish, sliced 5 black tea bags 1 tablespoon Simply Organic Five Spice Powder 1/4 cup honey 1 1/2 cups Triple Sec Simply Organic Cinnamon Sticks, for garnish Directions: In a pot over high heat, bring water to a boil. Squeeze juice from oranges into the water, then add squeezed oranges. Add tea bags, five spice powder and

Spices and spirits make summer sips shine honey. Gently whisk tea and let steep for 10 minutes. Into a half-gallon pitcher, strain tea through a fine mesh sieve. Add Triple Sec and serve over ice. Garnish with fresh orange slices and cinnamon sticks.

Watermelon Margarita with Chipotle Salt Rim What’s cooler than watermelon on a sultry summer afternoon? Kicking up the heat with smoky chipotle salt, that’s what! Ingredients: 4 cups frozen watermelon chunks 1/2 cup silver tequila 1/4 cup lime juice (about 3 to 4 limes, juiced) 2 tablespoons cane sugar 2 tablespoons sea salt 1/2 teaspoon Simply Organic Chipotle Powder Directions: In a blender, combine watermelon, tequila, lime juice and cane sugar. Blend until smooth. On a small plate, combine salt and chipotle powder. Wet the rims of the glasses with a piece of watermelon or water, then dip them in chipotle salt. Serve immediately.
