We all get the winter blues,

that nagging feeling of sadness or emptiness during the long grey days and dark nights. The bitter cold weather forces us to stay indoors more during winter, which can lead to more illnesses, less exercise and overall poor health. The shorter days and longer nights can even throw some people’s sleep cycles off and affect their mood. There are a few strategies and even medications that can help boost your health during those winter months. Some find relief through relaxtion techiniques such as yoga or meditation. Others use UV light boxes to simulate sunlight in their homes. We’ve gathered together some of our favorite methods of beating those winter blues- great recipes (because a yummy snack can always raise my spirits!) new technologies that allow you to see your overall health and volunteer opportunities with a local charity (sometimes focusing on someone else can help relieve your own stress.) Plus we have some awesome giveaways planned for our Facebook fans, so make sure you keep your eye out for those in the future!

Winter Wellness

By Alexandria Pederson

When we think of winter, we think of cold weather, snow and being inside and staying warm. It is just as important to get out and enjoy this time of the year as well, to keep your health up during the blustery months.

To help overcome the winter blues you can use an infrared sunlamp, drink more milk, take a Vitamin D3 supplement, or even just sit inside in a sunny window. These will help provide Vitamin D, which also helps with a sunny disposition! Also, you can use high quality, therapeutic grade essential oils. Many are good for amplifying a positive mood such as all of the citrus oils, lavender, peppermint, roman chamomile, jasmine, frankincense, rosemary, cedar, bergamot and palmarosa. These can be inhaled directly from the bottle or used with a diffuser, making your house or office smell wonderful!

Stay warm.

It’s fun to go out and play, but remember to stay warm! You should wear winter coats, hats, gloves, shoes and clothes. You

6 • Living Naturally • Dec/Jan 2016

lose the most heat through your hands, feet and head, so remember your hat and gloves when you go out. Once you come back inside drink hot tea or cider to warm yourself up. If your hands or fingers are cold, hold the mug of tea with your hands, the radiant heat will warm them and feel good.

Be active.

Exercise, such as walking indoors on a treadmill or around your local mall with a friend or even grabbing a raincoat and umbrella and walking outdoors can help your physical health. You can even hike a local trail or mountain during the winter months Don’t forget to use good walking shoes for traction in slippery conditions. All of these exercises will help you physically, you will sleep better and release stress at the same time!

Open up your airways.

When your air passages are clogged with mucus, you can use saline spray for your nose, and it will help loosen the congestion. Don’t be afraid to use a neti pot. It took me years before I was willing to try it, and it was easier, better and

helpful in clearing out my sinuses. You can also use high caliber, therapeutic grade essential oils for direct inhale or diffused. Try one of the following oils for colds and sinus conditions : peppermint, ravinstara, eucalyptus blue or eucalyptus radiata and inhale to open and help clear your air passageways.

Keep in Touch.

When it’s cold and you want to stay in cuddled up on the couch, remember to stay in touch with your family and friends. It is easy to forget and miss them instead of reaching out. Plan a visit with relatives and friends, such as a regular coffee date or exercising together. In bad weather you can call, e-mail, or drop a note in the mail. It is always nice to be remembered and fun to talk to friends even if you are not able to see them. By following one or many of the suggestions above, it can be and even better winter. Enjoy, have fun and take care of yourself.

Asyra Pro Bio- Energetic

Screening System

By Mary Pritchard,ND,CNC

This is the time of year when we feel gratitude for all the gifts in our life. One of the gifts we can be most grateful for is our health! Not feeling well can prevent us from having a positive outlook on life. Only 3 to 5 minutes of testing with the Asyra Pro can form a basis for exploring the root causes of health problems. It is non- invasive and it does not show practitioner bias. The Asyra Pro is the result of many decades of testing with continuous improvement and refinement. The result allows the person to be engaged to pinpoint results, sometimes “the missing piece” to their health.

The Asyra Pro is an advanced, flexible bio-energetic screening system. Asyra shows the response of a person to a variety of tests that cover anything from meridian points relating to organs of the body, food allergies, environmental toxicity, nutritional factors, emotional patterns, weight loss, allergies, and more.

which addresses the acupuncture points on the human body. Clients report they really feel the difference with the Asyra. Having spent a lifetime accumulating toxins we now begin by restoring a clear communication within. It takes about an hour for a full assessment. You will receive a printed read out, and an imprint of balancing frequencies known as digital homeopathy. You will also receive other remedies to help with you journey back to optimum health.

The Asyra gives information about the energetic origins of a client’s challenges and helps to advance quicker to appropriate protocols. The client receives a comprehensive assessment with a database of thousands of items to help find what will help restore balance. There is an additional imprint of frequencies available from the “Green Laser”

A Modern Twist on a

Classic Holiday Treat By Noel Lambert

Everyone has that time-honored family recipe that is the showpiece of holiday feasting. Certain foods and flavors, like peppermint candy canes, turkey with all the trimmings, pineapple-topped ham, and frosted sugar cookies are delicious musts for holiday celebrations.

Goji Ginger Popcorn Balls 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1/3 cup organic popcorn kernels 1/2 cup Frontier Organic Crystalized Ginger, diced into small pieces 1/2 cup Frontier Goji Berries 1/2 cup brown rice syrup 1/2 cup sunflower seed butter

If it’s been a while since you made your family favorite, dust off the recipe this year. Or, you can try something that’s both new and nostalgic at the same time, like this recipe for Goji Ginger Popcorn Balls from Frontier Co-op:

Directions: In a large stockpot over medium-high heat, heat coconut oil until melted. Add popcorn kernels and cover pot with lid. Heat popcorn, shaking the pot occasionally, for about 3-5 minutes, until popping slows and the majority of the kernels are popped. Remove from heat. Pour popcorn into a large bowl, removing un-popped kernels. Add crystalized ginger and goji berries. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine brown rice syrup and sunflower seed butter, stirring occa-

sionally. Continue to heat mixture for about 3-4 minutes, until contents are well combined and easily pourable. Pour mixture over popcorn and, using a wooden spoon or your hands, coat popcorn. Lightly wet your hands and form popcorn into 18 3-inch balls. Serve as soon as possible. If desired, substitute non-sweetened or sweetened sunflower seed butter for the unmodified sunflower seed butter, but expect a slightly different consistency and taste.

Celebrating all the paths to God!

4 winter-blues-busting

home improvement projects Three percent of the U.S. population suffers from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) every winter, according to Psychology Today. But you don’t have to be diagnosed with an actual disorder to suffer a bad case of the winter blues - it can happen to anyone. Since climate and environment have a lot to do with causing winter doldrums, you might find engaging in some home improvement projects can make you feel happier and healthier this winter. Freshening your space can feel good any time of year, but certain projects are perfectly aligned to give you a much-needed mood boost when it turns cold or wet weather sets in. Here are four projects that not only can brighten your outlook, they can also be good for your wallet:

1. Install skylights Avoiding SAD is preferable to treatment and skylights can help you maximize the amount of natural light that enters your home this winter. More natural light is good for you on many levels. Sunlight stimulates the body’s production of Vitamin D and increases the levels of serotonin in your brain; lower serotonin levels are thought to be associated with depression, lack of energy, elevated appetite and excessive sleepiness. What’s more, if you opt for Energy Star-qualified solar-powered fresh-air skylights, like those made by Velux America, you can also help improve indoor air quality. These skylights open, providing passive ventilation to allow stale indoor air to escape and fresh air to enter, and they close automatically in case of rain. Skylights can also be good for your financial health. Solar powered

skylights, along with solar powered blinds, as well as installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. Also, more natural light in your home on a dark winter day can help decrease your need for artificial lighting. And sunshine can help warm the interior of your home and support the work your furnace does to keep the house comfortable. Skylights can be installed in many areas of your home with kitchens and baths being among the most VELUX Sun Tunnel skylights bring helpful daylight into popular choices areas of the home where traditional skylights may not fit for more natural and where windows are sometimes scarce. These tubular light, fresh air, skylights are particularly useful in inside areas including and privacy. Even hallways, closets and laundry room. Yet from more natural light through the garage door is a huge surface area tubular Sun Tunnel skylights. 2. Replace your garage door If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think much about your garage door or the impact it has on

A great deal of warm air can escape a home through an uninsulated garage door. What’s more, when the garage gets cold, it can affect the comfort of rooms around and above it. Have

Replacing an old, uninsulated garage door with a new insulated model can improve heat retention. And a new garage door is a great way to update your home’s facade.

3. Replace an old appliance (or as many as you can afford) If you’re already bummed by winter, having to live with old, beat-up, inefficient appliances will only add to your frustration. Plus, older appliances generally use more electricity and water than newer models. Replacing an old refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer or dryer with Energy Star-qualified appliances can help reduce your energy and water consumption - and bills. It’s also an improvement that you can feel good about because it’s the perfect marriage of practicality (you really need appliances that function well) and enjoyment (all those bells and whistles just make the work more fun).

4. Declutter and add organizers You may not think of cleanup as a legitimate home improvement, but decluttering and organizing your environment can definitely boost your mood. In American homes, the problem of clutter has reached staggering proportions. More than half of Americans (54 percent) say they feel overwhelmed by the amount of clutter in their homes, and 78 percent have no idea what to do with it, according to a recent survey by the National Association for Professional Organizers and Decluttr.com. Grab some trash bags and start cleaning house. Trash the things that are clearly junk, donate things that are still usable but not by you and set aside the things you want to keep. Invest in some closet, cabinet and drawer organizers. Add storage cubbies to a mud room or entryway and create storage space in your garage.

Keep yourself sneeze and wheeze-free this holiday season

Allergic to the holidays? Your goal may be to celebrate the holidays in style this year, but your allergies and asthma are making you feel like the Grinch. You may not even be aware of what’s causing the extra sniffling, sneezing and itchy eyes.

“Two thirds of allergy sufferers have symptoms year-round, so it’s not just a matter of the first freeze hitting and your symptoms disappearing,” says allergist Bryan Martin, DO, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “Even after the pollen season dies down, there are environmental triggers to deal with - things like mold, dust and pet dander. The winter holidays can bring a whole new set of triggers.” The following are some ACAAI tips on ways to steer clear of allergic triggers that surface during the holidays, including some you may not have been aware of.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful Half the fun of the winter holidays is being outside - caroling, building snowmen, sledding. But if you have asthma, you need to know that very cold, dry air can be a trigger. If you’re heading outside and it’s very cold, cover your mouth and nose with a scarf or face mask - particularly if you’ll be exercising.

Over the river

If you’re traveling for the holidays and have allergies or asthma, be sure to pack your medicines. Some hotels now offer allergy-free rooms, so inquire when booking your stay. If you’re allergic to dust mites, bring your allergy-blocking bedding. If you need injectable epinephrine, make sure you have two for your trip.

Sneezing around the Christmas tree Lots of traditions swirl around the holidays - and lots of dust, too. If you store ornaments and artificial trees in the attic without being covered, they may be full of dust, which can cause allergies to flare. Clean them thoroughly before putting them up, and when the holidays are over, store them in air-tight boxes so that next year you’ll deal with fewer triggers. If you buy a real tree, know that some people have contact skin allergies to terpene, found in the sap of trees, as well as inhalant allergies to mold spores and pollen brought into the house by fresh trees and greenery.

Bring us a figgy pudding or not

The holidays often involve events where other people prepare the food. If you or your kids suffer from food allergies, you’re probably skilled at bringing something you know everyone in your clan can eat. You might also want to give the host a heads up if there are certain ingredients she needs to steer clear of. Check labels of anything that’s pre-prepared that you haven’t eaten before. And know that lots of websites have allergy-safe recipes for holiday classics. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, see a board-certified allergist. Allergists are trained to diagnose and treat your symptoms, and to work with you to create an individual action plan. To find an allergist in your area, use the ACAAI allergist locator tool. The ACAAI is a professional medical organization of more than 6,000 allergists-immunologists and allied health professionals, headquartered in Arlington Heights, Ill. ACAAI allergists are boardcertified physicians trained to diagnose allergies and asthma, administer immunotherapy, and provide patients with the best treatment outcomes. Help Save

The Next Girl By Dee Reynolds Photo provided by Help Save the Next Girl

O n October 17, 2009, Morgan Dana

Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, attended a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Virginia, and never came home. One hundred and one days later, a farmer found Morgan’s skeletonized remains in a remote pasture about six miles from the concert venue. Many in our area remember the events behind Morgan’s tragic story as if it were just yesterday. The news stories, interviews with friends and family who knew and loved Morgan Harrington, and all of the questions that the community asked. Questions such as “How?, Why?, What next?” When such a senseless tragedy strikes close to home, it is hard to find any silver lining in the clouds of grief, question and pain. However, Morgan Harrington’s abduction and murder prompted the beginning of Help Save The Next Girl, an organization founded by Dan and Gil Harrington, to help sensitize other young women to predatory dangers. This non-profit organization began as a conduit to spread information and promote personal safety. As a way to honor Morgan’s life, this powerful organization (which has quickly turned into a movement throughout the country) believes that “a positive legacy for Morgan includes our commitment to keep other young women safe”, their website shares. By taking to social media, Help Save the Next Girl has a team of diligent, passionate supporters who gathers and shares information quickly and efficiently through outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. By utilizing their 14 • Living Naturally • Dec/Jan 2016

network of followers to disseminate timely posts online, they are able to reach a large number of interested people, and together create a zone of safety. No parent wants to find themselves in the horrific shoes of Dan and Gil Harrington. Their sweet daughter, Morgan, was smart, beautiful and looking forward to changing the lives of children by becoming a teacher one day. She was excited to use her outgoing personality and kind heart to benefit children (and other service organizations), but destiny intervened and took her from her friends and family far too soon. It is the hope of Help Save the Next Girl, that their efforts will help to prevent dangerous and tragic scenarios for other families. One of the many ways that Help Save the Next Girl works to keep children, teenagers, young adults (both male and female) safe, is by providing families with a list of suggestions to consider when talking with their children about their comings and goings. Help Save the Next Girl offers the following tips for families to consider when talking with their children and loved ones about safety in today’s society: 1.Always use the buddy system when going out, especially at night. 2. If you think someone might be following you, walk to the other side of the road; if they follow call for help 3. When you are walking alone make sure you aren’t looking down at your phone, texting or scrolling through social media. Be alert and aware of

your surroundings. If you are walking alone and suddenly notice you are being followed, call the police. That sends your geo-location. 4. Have keys in hand when walking to your car so you don’t have to be fishing through your bag or coat to find them once you get there. 6. Always tell someone you trust where you are going. If it’s to someone’s house, provide a street address. 7. Choose parking spaces that are well lit. 8. Crack, never roll down, your car window. 9. If you think you are being followed, trust your instincts and take action. Never drive towards your house or destination. Drive to the police department. 10. Keep the doors of your home locked at all times, even when you are inside. 11. If you have to walk your dog at night, attach a pepper spray key chain to the leash and stay on well lit roads. 12. Make your social media private and don’t post your address, telephone number, or email. 13. Don’t be home alone for any workman appointment. 14. Do not be afraid to call the police. They are there for us. 15. Take a self-defense course. Many universities and police departments offer them free.

Libra

Venus might inspire you to opt for some restorative self-care. Invite friends for a spa day or a chance to relax together. Mars could assert its presence a little more authoritatively by encouraging you to develop strong boundaries and jettison relationships that have a negative effect on mind and body.

change the habits of a lifetime all at once. Make changes one habit at a time and you’ll soon notice a positive difference.

Aries Your wellness sector is very much in focus this month! Mars, in particular, encourages you to be proactive about diet and exercise. You might feel more comfortable with a personal trainer by your side who can give you some expert advice and push you to keep going when you hit a roadblock.

Taurus Health and lifestyle issues are activated by Venus moving into Libra. This blend of energies can push you to seek balance in all areas your life, particularly when it comes to work and relaxation. Pamper yourself a little more with spa days, beauty treatments and perhaps a timely massage or two!

Gemini

Leo Pluto’s journey through your wellness zone is slow but steady, ensuring that you change not only your physiology but also your psychology through healthy diet and exercise. And with the Sun in Scorpio the weeks ahead can be excellent for a short detox and a chance to clear out emotional baggage.

Virgo You seem to radiate charisma this month! As Uranus, your health planet, continues to move through Aries, this can be an excellent time to channel your vitality into making key changes in your life, particularly if they increase your overall happiness and peace of mind.

Scorpio

This is a time to take stock, with both Mercury and the Sun in your sector of wellbeing for much of the month. You might want to read some of the latest books concerning health or related issues and see how you can incorporate the information into your life.

You might be doing a lot of socializing over the holidays, which can certainly enhance your spirits. The Sun in your sign puts you firmly in control while also amping up your vitality and joie de vivre. To stay in top condition, be sure to get adequate rest and rehydrate, particularly if you’ve been partying.

Cancer

Sagittarius

Saturn in Sagittarius encourages greater awareness of the ways you could be sabotaging your health. But don’t rush to

wellness. However, this attitude is likely to cause extra stress when you don’t really need it. Instead, take a leaf out of Pisces’ book and go with the flow!

Capricorn Although you’ll be busy this month, you’ll be encouraged to relax your grip a little. Having Pluto in your sign can spur you to work hard and sometimes overdo it. And even though your health sector is not in focus this month, the cosmos is enticing you to unwind, detox, and rejuvenate yourself in whatever way seems best.

Aquarius

As your wellness sector is linked to the Moon, the New Moon and Full Moon phases can have an impact on health issues. This month the New Moon in Scorpio encourages change from the inside out. By having the intention to release emotional issues, resentment, and hurt feelings - and doing so on a regular basis - you’ll notice a transformation in all aspects of your health.

Pisces The Sun in Scorpio suggests you can recharge your batteries and feel more vital by traveling, exploring new territory, and doing something a little different. The New Moon reveals that adopting a belief system with guidelines for diet or exercise could be a helpful adjunct to your spiritual path and feeling good in yourself.
