matthew azpilicueta issues and thesis statement Los Angeles is a fabric of sprawl. Transportation issues and car dependency has led Los Angeles Metro to expand the transportation system. In particular, the purple subway line proposed to extend along Wilshire corridor from Downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica. However, the concentrations of density are linear forms that meander through the city scape. New transit stations should fracture the linear fabric and provide a more intensive and concentrated vertical development around nodes of urban vitality. The outcome is the hub acting as the effective center of activity, the distributer of human flow, and an incubator for the interface of different functions. The Hub Constituents are a direct reflection of the identity of its site context and is also susceptible to foreign components that fit within a similar framework. process and massing A set of criteria was set to develop requirements for selected site and prescription of program: density; proximity to transit; pedestrian and street vendor activity; museums. The same criterion was used in selecting case studies for the incorporation of foreign program into the site. After deriving program, an understanding of building typology was necessary as a starting point to massing. The end result is a U-shape courtyard typology acting as a plinth with a tower situated on top that sheds importance on views, orientation, light, and public space. The initial massing was an indication of 3 factors in regards to the thesis statement: interface and vitality; vertical fracture; transparency. Interface and vitality: The additive interface of program components create opportunity for urban interaction within the building while also producing a set of datum lines that indicate points of transit thresholds and walking patterns. Foreign program is then subtracted from the form to produce the boundaries of access, views, and public spaces. Vertical Fracture: The idea of vitality on a horizontal scheme that is fractured upward to formulate intensification of spaces. The plinth is subjected on all levels and the tower becomes ambiguous. The subterranean vitality begins to grow and forces the tar pits to push upward. Transparency: Stemming from the Athletic Club in New York by Rem Koolhaas that conditions the combination of program, use, and space to produce a sense of “retroactive manhattan’ism.” For this thesis, it is a highly public and transparent building framework that iterates permeable and convoluted floor plates to promote retroactive LA’ism. Each floor plate could perform differently and suggest the intercourse of urban activity.
