A LOOK BACK AND A GLANCE FORWARD, THE 2020 SHOWCASE
O
nce again, we’re here to witness the end of the cutting season and the beginning of another year and consideration of what’s coming next. It’s hard for to believe, but the first GIE+EXPO I attended was just a couple of months ago in Louisville, KY, where it has been held for the past 35 years. Having written about the equipment and the various manufacturers involved in the industry it was my first opportunity to see some of the products up close and personal. It was quite the spectacle to be immersed in all the products ranging from the handheld trimmers, chainsaws and blowers to the aerators, spreaders, mowers and all the way up to the skid steers, wheel loaders and excavators. Briggs & Stratton, Mean Green, Toro, Stihl, Greenworks Commercial and many others put on quite the show to display their existing line of products and highlight new ones. As with many attendees, I was mostly taken by the Ryan Whisner (920) 542-1238 technological advancements at so many of the booths. rwhisner@acbusinessmedia.com It is no secret that landscape maintenance businesses, like many others are having a difficult time finding workers to handle the business they have or would like to pursue. With limited human resources, technological advances have taken to solving that issue. Robotic mowers were among the highlights of the show with numerous manufacturers showcasing their versions of the technological wonders that may help free up at least one worker from cutting the grass. We will be taking deeper look into the future impact of the robotic mowers on commercial mowing and landscapers in the January/February issue. Both before and after GIE I had the pleasure of attending a handful of other events arranged by various industry manufacturers. One company embraced its growth by being more forward about showcasing all the products under its parent namesake together at one event. In another instance, a different manufacturer highlighted a new retail approach heading into 2020 in which all machines will sport clear and visible cost details just like a car dealer displaying prices on windshields of vehicles. This information will include factors such as cash price and monthly payment options. While no prices are shown here, as you browse through the 2020 Showcase edition of Green Industry Pros, we invite you to think about how the equipment has evolved and consider also where things are going.
