WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE FOR THE VEGAS KINGDOMS OF M&M’S AND HERSHEY’S, THE HOLIDAYS MEAN ESCALATING THE BATTLE FOR CHOCOLATE DOMINION. BY SARAH FELDBERG

Las Vegas is often dubbed an adult playground, a place to indulge grown-up desires and partake in an array of not-safe-for-home vices. But nestled on the Strip is a pair of chocolatedipped attractions where the only true sin would be sticking to your diet. M&M’s World and

Hershey’s Chocolate World are rival cocoa kingdoms that compete to satisfy sweet tooths with Wonka-worthy wonders like a 62-foot wall of melt-in-your-mouth M&M’s and an 800-pound model of the Statue of Liberty carved entirely from Hershey’s milk chocolate.

“Yes, there’s a little bit of competitive spirit,” says Hershey’s Chocolate World store manager Cindy Wix Ingling of M&M’s, located almost directly across Las Vegas Boulevard. And during the holiday rush, that competitive spirit ticks up a notch as both chocolate behemoths go big to get

shoppers in the door. At M&M’s World, a seasonal pop-up shop features ugly Christmas sweaters, candy-filled ornaments, and limitededition white peppermint M&M’s. Meanwhile, the Hershey’s flagship stocks up on limited-edition candycane Kisses and Vegas-only

apparel, and the in-house bakeshop serves Stripexclusive sweets made by local landmark Freed’s Bakery alongside decadent indulgences like chocolatecovered bacon and fromscratch s’mores. When chocolate giants battle for Strip supremacy, the real winner is us.

Cuckoo for cocoa! Add to these sweet images an Empire State Building made of 1,800 Hershey’s milk chocolate bars and a 62-foot wall of M&M’s, and you have a fairly accurate representation of the city’s best chocolate rivalry. The diet starts in 2017.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

#THEVEGASEDIT In the last month, I’ve been massaged with candlewax; eaten my weight in vegan meat; gone on what I thought was a comprehensive oyster happy hour tour (there’s more work to be done!), detoxed in a hyperbaric chamber, and did upside down yoga as part of #thevegasedit, our new page on vegasmagazine.com. Want me to try something and give you the inside scoop? Email me at thevegasedit@ greengale.com. Your ideas (for which you’ll get credit!) could inspire what we cover in the magazine and on our site.

Recently I attended a lecture at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art entitled “Town and Country: Painting and Modernity from Realism to Expressionism,” given by Claire C. Whitner, assistant director of curatorial affairs and senior curator of collections for the Davis Museum at Wellesley College. The show, which examines how artists depicted 19th century Europe’s rural and urban areas during great social, economic, and artistic change, is fascinating in its own right

(read more about it on page 50). But to my surprise, Whitner observed that Las Vegas seems a particularly apt location in which to stage an exhibition about the rise of the modern city. Vegas is “a place that has not only been upheld as the quintessential postmodern city since the 1970s, but has continued to serve as the lens through which to theorize the changing international urban landscapes in the 21st century,” she pointed out. Always evolving, reinterpreting, and reinventing, Vegas offers new interpretations “of how spectacle and visual primacy continue to be components of the urban experience.” It’s almost too perfect, she rightly pointed out, that our micro-

Paris, Venice, and even New York City are inscribed within Las Vegas. This is why I live in and love Las Vegas. Sure, we push the limits of architecture, fashion, and often, good taste. But in many ways, that makes us a testing ground for urban change. We’re the runway to realway of urban planning. In the pages of our #Insta-Vegas cover story (page 84), we offer you that lens Whitner mentioned, quite literally, through which to see our changing city, through our characters, our landscape, our fashion, our unique aesthetic. Happy Holidays,

As the NHL approved our expansion franchise, perhaps hockey investor Daniel Negreanu (who also happens to be the number-one-earning player in pro poker) said it best in an interview with Vegas: “Las Vegas is basically a city of displaced souls, and this will bring us together.” As our city diversifies, Vegas magazine is also switching things up to reflect the speed of these changes. BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS LETTER, one of the biggest mysteries of our year might have been solved: What to call our new NHL team? Plus, will the Oakland Raiders move to a stadium that the Nevada Legislature approved to house NFL? We’ll find out about that too. Meanwhile, while there have been significant changes in UFC after its sale to WME-IMG, its Las Vegas HQ continues to grow UFC into the mainstream and massively popular sport it now is. But all the news isn’t on the sports front. Green Valley Ranch celebrates 15 years of luxury in Vegas by doing a grand renovation; there are exciting new dining venues opening in Cosmopolitan, Venetian, MGM Grand—and elsewhere on and off the Strip. What does all this change mean? In short, we’re diversifying our city from a Strip-focused, gaming-centric tourist destination (which, don’t get

EMILY WILSON

Robert Kachelriess has represented Las Vegas in Thrillist for the past three years. He has also worked as the managing editor for Vegas2LA magazine and is a news producer for KVVU Fox5 in Las Vegas. For this issue of Vegas, he wrote about goings-on and getting your drink on around town.

Over the course of her career, Betsy F. Perry has worked with Michael Bloomberg, Rupert Murdoch, Helen Gurley Brown, and Michael Milken. She started at Harper’s Bazaar, has held senior positions at Cosmopolitan and Premiere, and has been on both sides of the camera as a Fox producer, movie critic, and Star Magazine gossip columnist. She wrote this issue’s Style story on Escada’s 2017 resort collection.

Matt Kelemen has covered music, film, architecture, and design over the course of his career, and for the last decade, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which he writes about in this issue.

Photographer Emily Wilson shot our spotlight on Katie O’Neill and Patina Décor. Her current clients include The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Black Mountain Institute, and Trinity Haven Development. She is currently working on a personal project on Nevada agriculture and the Las Vegas chefs who source ingredients from within the state.

Go-to cocktail spot: The Barrymore at the Royal Resort. I always have a hard time choosing between a Manhattan and an old-fashioned. The Barrymore cocktail solves that problem since it’s like a combination of both, fueled with Gentleman Jack and flavored with orange marmalade. Insider Vegas venue tip: I love what they’ve done with T-Mobile Arena. It’s the best large-scale venue in the country. If you’re stuck for tickets, see if admission is available for Hyde Lounge. It’s like watching the show from a nightclub in the back of the arena. The view is distant but face it, you were going to watch most of it on the big screens anyway.

34  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

Behind the story: When you sit home wearing sweats, it’s great fun to think about all the pretty clothes you’re writing about. I especially loved the names of colors— Mimosa yellow and Melrose pink—that the designer came up with. Winter must-have: Gorgeous over-the-knee suede boots. Best gift ever: My mother gave me an Hermès bag when I was younger, and two years ago, I had it all polished up and gave it to my daughter. She loved it, too.

Why 2017 will be a big year for the UFC: In the last 12 months, the UFC broke ground on a new training campus and headquarters, cemented the star power of Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey, and was acquired by William Morris Endeavor in a development that takes MMA to an entirely new level. Fighters will become more celebrated in mainstream culture, and UFC’s global expansion will accelerate. Fighters to look out for: Paige VanZant will likely stay in the spotlight during the next year, and undefeated kickboxer Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has what COO Lawrence Epstein describes as “one of the most unique styles in the sport.” Watch out for Yair Rodriguez and Cody Garbrandt as well.

Why she loves working in Vegas: My family and I moved here from New York a few years ago because of the revitalization of Downtown. From day one, I started following the story of building renovations, small business, and personal profiles. I love telling stories of people and places by capturing genuine and candid moments while also finding subtle details in a scene that can help tell a bigger story. On her shoot for this issue: Katie was fun and so photogenic. The store has endless amounts of interesting compositions.

A GRAND AFFAIR

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY DENISE TRUSCELLO

CELINE DION CELEBRATES 1,000 SHOWS AT THE COLOSSEUM AT CAESARS PALACE. In front of a packed house at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, an irrepressible Celine Dion joked with a crowd of 4,200 fans, “One thousand shows? I don’t feel that old!” Her 1,000th show at Caesars on Saturday, October 8, began with a spirited retrospective of the last 13 years in pictures. Her 90-minute show was full of personal reminiscences, from being the performing last child of a family of 14 children, to warm and sometimes lighthearted tributes to her husband René Angélil, who passed away in January. “He’s here tonight with us, I’m pretty sure,” she said to the cheering audience. During a scat version of Ella Fitzgerald’s “(If You Can’t Sing It) You’ll Have to Swing It,” she dangled a long stem from the slit of her evening gown and winked, “That was for René.” Through seven standing ovations, she flew through a range of favorites, from “All By Myself” to “My Heart Will Go On” (enveloped in a now-iconic curtain of rain), and thrilled the audience with Prince’s “Purple Rain,” as well as “Recovering”—a gift from the singer Pink. Don’t worry that Vegas’s famous songbird will hang it up anytime soon; she’s announced her 2017 dates—and capped off her show with Queen’s “The Show Must Go On.”

Friends of Jenna Morton—activist, philanthropist, and one-half of the power restaurant couple The Morton Group—were invited by husband Michael Morton to celebrate “50 years of (mostly) nonviolent protest (and Jenna’s birthday, too)” at the family’s home in The Ridges. Attire was all-black, and admission was guests’ favorite poem of love or peace. Those who felt compelled to gift were requested to support the PAX Foundation (peacebypax.org), a project founded by Jenna in North Jordon. Partygoers enjoyed buckets of lobster tails and, true to the family’s fun nature, formally passed White Castle sliders at a miles-long table that skirted the Mortons’ open-plan backyard.

Why build The Park Theater? “We’re in an extremely competitive market. And we didn’t have a proper midsize theater. It gives artists a chance to be more creative than on a normal tour. The theater is the first part of the rebranding of the Monte Carlo hotel, which will eventually be Park MGM.”

How did you lure away Bruno Mars from the Cosmopolitan? “It wasn’t that difficult. It’s about merging Bruno Mars’s brand with MGM Resorts’ brand [and] trying to create something bigger than just a residency. Hopefully this is just the beginning of many things to come with Bruno.”

FANTASTICO! HOW TO TOP LAST YEAR? FOR VENETIAN’S EXTRAVAGANT ULTIMO, A VIRTUAL TRIP AROUND THE WORLD!

“Oh, you know, just an intimate little dinner in the living room with friends...” is how you can Facebrag your Grand Banquet experience at Ultimo: Weekend of Excellence.

48  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

The first Grand Banquet of Ultimo: Weekend of Excellence, served along a table that spanned the length of Venetian’s Grand Colonnade, prompted a (rarely) awestruck Mario Batali to pronounce it “the grandest meal ever served in Las Vegas.” But that was 2013, a virtual millennium ago in the idea cycle of Venetian and Palazzo’s VP of food and beverage, Sebastien Silvestri, who conceived of the annual culinary weekend. This year, Thomas Keller helms a global team of chefs presenting dishes that will both represent their specialties and hint at their countries of origin, in a dinner whose theme is Le Grand Voyage. The star lineup includes Keller representing the United States, Jérôme Bocuse for France, Paul Bartolotta for Italy, Vikram Vij for India, Pierre Thiam for Africa, Emma Bengtsson for Sweden, Curtis Stone and Shaun Hergatt for Australia, and Ming Tsai for Asia. Video mapping will transform the walls of Venetian’s hall, and tables will be bedecked in $2 million in Lalique glass flown in just for the occasion. This is Keller’s second Ultimo; so does he agree with Batali’s assessment? “It’s pretty spectacular, probably in the top three for me,” he says. Other superlatives: rare pairings from Dom Pérignon, Daou Vineyards, Memento Mori, Pio Cesare, and Marqués de Murrieta. This year, packages entitle guests to a caviar reception in Paiza Club, a hot-air balloon trip, a Rolls-Royce driving experience, and a farewell Hacienda Tequila brunch with a $7,000 bottle served in Lalique. All for charity! “It goes to really worthy causes,” says Keller. “We’re benefiting Ment’or [which assists emerging culinary professionals] and Keep Memory Alive.” The highlight for Keller? Seeing guests “just over the moon.” December 9–11; venetian.com

INDUSTRIAL EVOLUTION A NEW SHOW AT BELLAGIO GALLERY OF FINE ART SHOWS 19TH-CENTURY EUROPE THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS ARTISTS. BY KRISTEN PETERSON

The Industrial Revolution transformed 19th-century Europe’s landscape, filled factories, and widened the social divide. Bustling urban grit lay in stark contrast to the magnificently pastoral landscapes artists depicted during a time when some were breaking from Realism. In Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art’s “Town and

50  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

Country: From Degas to Picasso,” visitors see the interpretations of the changing world in 47 works from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Millet were among the artists depicting the sophistication, technology, peasantry, and high and low culture of the era

in a variety of media. Max Beckmann detailed his contempt toward the political elite in mocking lithographs. Satirist Honoré Daumier depicted the darker elements of city life and politics in his lithographic caricatures. But don’t expect the expected from bold-faced artists, says Bellagio curator Tarissa Tiberti. “In exhibitions like

this, a survey of artists and artworks based on a central theme, it is important that the medium or subject theme contributes to the overall theme of the exhibit. In this case the Van Gogh is not typical of his work, and the subject matter is personal to the artist.” One of Tiberti’s favorites from the show is Ernst Kirchner’s expressionistic

Mountain Landscape from Clavadel. “The big swipes of color seem effortless yet give the detail of being in a dense forest of trees,” she says, capturing the beauty of the landscape in an exhibit of diversity and divide in both subject and medium. MORIMOTO, PLEASE! TELEVISION’S FAVORITE IRON CHEF HAS (FINALLY!) LANDED IN LAS VEGAS. BY JIM BEGLEY

After a three-year flirtation with Las Vegas, chef Masaharu Morimoto has opened his highlyanticipated Morimoto Las Vegas in MGM Grand’s former Shibuya space. Originally slated for Mirage, the celebrity chef instead unveiled his stylistic Japanese cuisine in a sleek, Yabu Pushelberg-designed room—and as a sneak peek would indicate, the restaurant was worth the wait. Diners will now have the opportunity to experience dishes that have cemented the Iron Chef’s fame, including an innovative toro tartare presentation served with six condiments. But the highlights of the Morimoto Las Vegas experience are his first-ever teppan tables. As for favorite dishes? “They’re all my favorite, but the teppan menu is one of the most exciting features, using my favorite ingredients—any kind of meat!” he enthuses. Teppanyaki, the theatrical

cooking method where diners surround a large, flat grill, gained popularity stateside at Benihana restaurants. But Morimoto offers an atypical hibachi experience with nary a flaming onion volcano in sight. Instead, the slate includes rich Japanese A5 wagyu beef sukiyaki—Asian fondue for the uninitiated—with a soft poached jidori (free-range) egg for dipping. As for his Vegas invasion, Morimoto says that he designs all his menus with a nod toward local palates, and is adding Vegas exclusives, such as spicy tuna tacos; laksa noodle soup (a combination of Chinese and Malay flavors, with tonkotsu broth, coconut milk, ground pork, and red curry); and ishiyaki kakuni bop—pork belly cooked with dramatic, Iron Chef flair in a hot stone bowl tableside. “It’s not easy—it’s Las Vegas—but I’m up for it,” he laughs. 702-891-3001; mgmgrand.com

MIXED MARTIAL METAMORPHOSIS WHAM-BAM GOES GLAM, WITH THE UFC’S NEW ROSTER OF HOLLYWOOD OWNERS. BY MATT KELEMEN

Excited for UFC 207, Nunes vs. Rousey? So are a slew of celebs, as Twitter can attest. In less than 15 years, Dana White and Station Casino executives Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta turned a $2 million investment in an ailing Ultimate Fighting Championship into the most successful sports venture in recent history.

54  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

In June, UFC was acquired for $4 billion by a group led by Hollywood talent agency WME-IMG, whose high-powered clients, from UFC enthusiast Conan O’Brien to Cam Newton, are now investors in mixed-martial arts’ preeminent organization. “The opportunities that they are going to create for our athletes are limitless,” says UFC COO Lawrence

Epstein. “WME-IMG represents the biggest stars in the world of entertainment and sports, and their core competency is in building stars.” UFC joined a growing portfolio that includes the PGA, Wimbledon, and Professional Bull Riders, and WME-IMG clients such as Tom Brady, Anthony Keidis, and Rob Drydek have been visible

at recent UFC events. “These celebrity investors give us the opportunity to reach their fan bases and expand the exposure of our brand on a global scale,” says Epstein. “Conan O’Brien has 22 million followers on Twitter alone.” UFC’s global expansion has long been in the works, with events in twice as many countries for the

fourth quarter of this year than in 2015. “As we look forward, we’re going to continuously put on great events while looking to expand to new territories like China and Russia,” says Epstein. “We’ve had a plan to expand internationally and now we’re going to just turbo-charge this thing.”December 30, MGM Grand Garden Arena; mgmgrand.com

SUGAR SLAM! TODAY TENNIS, MODELING, DIPLOMACY, AND CHOCOLATE FOR MARIA SHARAPOVA. TOMORROW, THE WORLD! BY TARA MCCRILLIS

CLOCKWISE FROM BOTTOM LEFT: Maria Sharapova introduces Sugarpova to Las Vegas at the Sweet Factory in October; this gorgeous face makes us doubt sugar’s recent vilification; just some of the many flavors of Sugarpova.

We’d expect a sports bar, or protein powder… but candy? This is really a passion project for me. We are very strict these days about the way we eat but all of us have a little sweet tooth and indulging is part of life. We understand that Sugarpova is to become a lifestyle brand, with apparel and home goods. What’s the next step? Yes, definitely! But in terms of sweets, truffles are next for us, and a chocolatecovered gummy. Do you have a lifelong love of sweets? When I was about 7 years old and we moved to the US, I went into one of these candy stores where they had all this selection, and I had just never seen anything like this in Russia. I used to pack a little bags and take it back to Russia for my friends. When I wanted to start a business, I thought of that memory. Why have you chosen to partner with Baron Chocolatiers? Their products are all natural, non-GMO, and we are one of the few that are halal and kosher as well. I wanted Sugarpova to feel premium, since I was thinking of it as a souvenir for my friends. Find Sugarpova at The Sweet Factory, Galleria at Sunset,1300 W. Sunset Road, Henderson, and sugarpova.com.

She’s been ranked #1 by the World Tennis Association five times, modeled for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and been a UN Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador (representing Chernobyl recovery). But Maria Sharapova has another title you might not know about: celebrity confectioner. She launched her candy company, Sugarpova, in 2012 with a line of gummy candies, then forayed into chocolates this year, partnering with Baron Chocolatier on a line estimated to make $20 million by 2018. We sat down with Sharapova when she delivered her line to The Sweet Factory in Henderson.

The 84-yearold actress and singer—one of only 12 people to achieve coveted “EGOT” status by winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards—is in good company as the voice of the holiday classic. David Bowie, Patrick Stewart and Dame Edna have all performed the narrator role, but Moreno brings her customary zest to the part. “The whole idea is to get very dramatic and big,” she says. “I love to entertain children. UNDER THE SURFACE ESCADA FOLDS FOUR DECADES OF HERITAGE INTO A MODERN RESORT COLLECTION THAT SHIMMERS IN SHADES OF WATER, SUN, AND SAND.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ESCADA

BY BETSY F. PERRY

While many fashion houses change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of forty without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers, while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s coming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular obsession in Hockney’s aquatic series). Key pieces include

Moments in the sun (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): For its 2017 resort collection, Escada modeled a yellow frock after Kim Basinger’s 1998 Oscar dress; the collection also includes coats and gowns in iridescent fabrics as well as metallic slides and kitten heels.

here and right: Daniel Wingate, a 14-year veteran of Escada who has been fashion director since 2013, inflected the 2017 resort collection with mod touches, such as blacks and whites and pencil pants. below: The color-blocked ML40 bag ($1,295).

pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration, of course, is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients— who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection, which makes stylish dressing practically foolproof, also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic ankle-length pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry buildings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eyepopping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardrobe. For Wingate, it amounts to a simple design credo: “Be relevant.” Saks Fifth Avenue, Fashion Show, 702-733-8300; us.escada.com

“Every step of the way I had excellent care. If it wasn’t for Spring Valley Hospital, I wouldn’t be alive today.” ~ Sharon Martin

Advanced technology, great people and great care save lives!

A brain aneurysm almost ended Sharon Martin’s life. With no warning in the middle of a conversation, her head slumped over and she was unconscious. She was taken to Spring Valley Hospital where doctors raced to save her life, using endovascular neurocoiling, a minimally invasive technique that blocks the flow of blood to an aneurysm. According to doctors, Sharon’s grade 4 aneurysm was one of the worst and typically has less than a 20 percent survival rate. “I was guided to the right hospital to get the best treatment. The fabulous care I received saved my life. Every member of the staff helped me and they are the reason I am alive today.” Sharon’s latest neurological tests were normal and she is back to doing all of the things she loves … gardening, baking and visiting the hospital staff to thank them for being there for her and her family.

STYLE THE GET Salvatore Ferragamo’s spring favorites for both women—like tops with exaggerated sleeves, skirts with fluted hemlines and sporty separates—and men are now available at its newest home at Wynn.

GLAM, BAM! ITALIAN LUXURY HOUSE FERRAGAMO’S THIRD BOUTIQUE OPENS ON THE STRIP, WITH A PAIR OF VEGAS EXCLUSIVES. BY LISA FERRANDINO

Lights, camera, action! Three words sum up the careers of Salvatore Ferragamo’s earliest clients, stars like Marilyn Monroe, Mae West, and Joan Crawford who turned the young Italian shoemaker into a fashion legend. After all, his bespoke styles for Tinseltown’s elite—from cork wedges to invisible sandals— helped define Hollywood fashion. And now the label that grew from footwear to one of fashion’s most covetable ready-to-wear brands is ratcheting its Old Hollywood glam to a new level in Wynn Las Vegas. Call it Beverly Hills part deux, as the new boutique brings the same luxury to Wynn as its concept flagship on Rodeo Drive that opened in July. “It’s a new space that showcases a newly conceived architectural design that debuted in LA, where my grandfather found fame in his career 100 years ago,” James Ferragamo says. The 4,370-square-foot shop offers a glimpse into the style of his late grandfather via nods to 1930s Art Deco, such as a pendulum chandelier, upholstered club chairs and Donald Deskey-inspired lamps. The new store is an intimate setting for the spring women’s and men’s collections (think feminine yet sporty separates, fluted hemlines, and punchy florals to soft suiting and sahara silk jackets for men) along with shoes, handbags, fine jewelry, and smaller leather goods. And if the aesthetic of the boutique isn’t enough to transport you to the golden era, look for the must-have exclusives of the year in Vegas: the embellished Gancio Lock bag and gold leather lace-up sandal, available only in this location. ART NOUV-EAU THESE GALLERY-WORTHY PERFUME BOTTLES ARE MEANT TO BE ON DISPLAY. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE

Attention! The newest highfashion fragrance releases come in bottles as exquisite as the perfumes within. When Christian Louboutin enlisted architect Thomas Heatherwick to design the containers for his three new fragrances, including Tornade Blonde, the results were stunning undulated glass bottles,

each with a central aperture. “It was no longer a single volume, but became a ring of perfume,” says Heatherwick. “Christian wanted to a create a flow of fragrance within the bottle.” Other designers have played with the stoppers in the pursuit of both artistry and functionality. Influenced by the brand’s Intarsio

jewelry collection, Bulgari’s Le Gemme Orientali collection features a cabochon-shaped stopper with a gold design reminiscent of Mediterranean architecture, while the opulent structural cap of Sisley’s Soir d’Orient, designed by contemporary artist Bronisław Krzysztof, resembles a crown.

For the Black Orchid Lalique Edition, Tom Ford called on the famed crystal house to create a finely fluted, Art Deco black crystal bottle. (A limited edition, only 1,200 pieces were created, each engraved by Lalique with a unique edition number.) More surreal is Cartier’s new scent for men,

L’Envol de Cartier, which sits in a removable—and refillable—capsule within a detachable glass dome. Seen from a distance, it’s as if the elixir is levitating. Says Cartier perfumer Mathilde Laurent, “We developed 2,000 drawings over more than two years [in order] to achieve the perfect masterpiece.”

Patina Décor’s incredible vintage clothing collection holds caftans for every taste, from rare midcentury Finnish textile art pieces to classic ‘70s Mrs. Roper extravaganzas.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY WILSON

As board chair of the new art museum at Symphony Park, Katie O’Neill is a prominent fixture in Vegas’s art scene. Great-granddaughter of casino mogul Benny Binion, her path was influenced by family friends like Steve Wynn (a fellow UPenn alumnus), who convinced a young O’Neill to switch her major from business to art history, a move that led her into the New York gallery world before returning home to Vegas in 2009. She cuts a distinctive figure in public, effortlessly slipping into a rare midcenturymodern Finnish caftan for one event, and an “insane, ’80s times 10” YSL peach silk dress for her second baby’s shower. “It’s so easy now to buy head-to-toe designer outfits, but I find it so much more interesting when people style themselves with their own resources,” she says. Enter Patina Décor’s owner Kate Aldrich, who is known for the high-end objets she sells on 1stdibs.com, but whose Main Street store is a glorious—and growing—source of vintage wear. Her “glam early’60s” aesthetic attracted O’Neill. And Aldrich has built a devoted global following: “I have lists of things I’m hunting for people,” including CeeLo Green’s fiancée, Shani James (“She loves vintage, and she understands it”), and Melissa McCarthy. “Vintage shopping is like finding art,” O’Neill says. “The stories behind these pieces make them so much more meaningful.” Patina Décor, 1300 S. LET’S HAVE A PARADE! MACY’S CELEBRATES ITS 90TH THANKSGIVING DAY SPECTACLE WITH A FANCY RIZZOLI TOME AND IN-STORE EVENTS FROM COAST TO COAST. BY JILL SIERACKI

When the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way down New York’s Central Park West and Sixth Avenue on November 24, the celebration is set to be even more exuberant than usual to mark the 90th edition this year. “We like to make sure nothing is duplicated— we’re giving people a full breadth of entertainment from the moment the turkey crosses the starting line to the time Santa

officially rings in the holiday season,” says Amy Kule, executive producer and parade official. The parade reaches 50 million viewers with its nationally televised NBC broadcast, and 3.5 million line the streets in New York to witness it live. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures

the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”

Across the country, in-store celebratory events and products will be unveiled— and a new app even allows users to create their own Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “This is a milestone for Macy’s, but I think it’s a milestone for every fan we have across the country,” says Kule. “This is not a New York parade; this is America’s parade.” Fashion Show, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd., 702-731-5111; macys.com

Gender benders: In addition to the classic stylings of its Originals line, seen in a throwback denim sherpa jacket ($158, top right), Guess goes unisex with its His & Hers collection, featuring (clockwise from top left) T-shirts ($69), taper crop pants ($128), and denim jackets ($148), as well as an overcoat ($238) and leather shirt ($158).

Who can forget Guess’s indelibly sexy pin-up ads from the ’80s and ’90s? The Los Angeles brand that stamped Brigitte Bardot double Claudia Schiffer and Jayne Mansfield-esque Anna Nicole Smith onto the American consciousness now pays homage to its own history with a new capsule collection of throwbacks called Guess Originals. “We want to

provide our [current] customers with a collection of classic silhouettes that mirror the pieces found in Guess’s DNA,” says CEO Victor Herrero. The line, with pieces named for the styles on which the company first built its glam, carefree image, will include skinny and baggy high-waisted jeans, vintage-style dungarees, oversized pencil skirts, and denim

bustiers for women—all featuring the iconic upside-down triangle logo. Men’s looks include ’90s-esque work wear, carpenter jeans, oversized Sherpa jackets, and a leather-blocked black denim jacket embellished with stars and stripes. But the brand is having it both ways, simultaneously releasing a forwardthinking unisex collection, His & Hers, with basics

such as tees, blazers, outerwear, and athleisure, all cut to common, adaptable fits. The overall aesthetic is clean, classic, even austere, with nary a logo in sight. “With a collection of premium staples,” says Herrero, “Guess’s expansion into the unisex fashion category [helps] blur the line.” Fashion Show, 702-6912541; guess.com

STYLE REJUVENATE

SAVING FACE A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TREATMENT MAKES THE DREADED DOUBLE CHIN A THING OF THE PAST.

A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Utilizing precise injections of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells, Kybella, which enjoyed phenomenal success during clinical trials, has emerged as something of a miracle fix—for the appropriate patients, of course. “It’s a great product in the right circumstance, but the patient selection has to be correct,” says Dr. Stephen C. Adler, a Miami-based facial plastic surgeon. “It’s best in younger patients between 30 and 45 [who have] some fullness under the chin but otherwise good skin texture and tension.” “Kybella’s role is strategic and limited only to fat under the chin,” adds Adler. “It’s not the same as a neck lift, because it does not pull or tighten the muscles. It also takes two or three sessions, and there is a recovery time of a few weeks in between.” Whatever it takes to unearth your true face… Treatment programs can range from $1,300 to $7,200; mykybella.com

In 2015, a Patek Philippe 5016A sold for $7.5 million in Geneva—the most expensive wristwatch ever sold at auction. This spring another rare Patek Philippe received a winning bid of more than $2.5 million in Hong Kong. These excellent examples of masterful watchmaking feature the sort of superplative design and manufacturing that make timepieces hold (and increase) their value. # I N S TA VEGAS! Enterprising social media stars are stealing the scene this season with snaps that mean serious business. by ANDREA BENNETT

84  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM

IT’S A WEEKEND NIGHT—OR ANY NIGHT— IN LAS VEGAS, and at least a few thousand people are enacting their #whathappensinvegas fantasies. On one end of town, Steve Aoki could be “caking” a few lucky fans among 7,000 packed into Hakkasan before spraying them with Champagne. Holly Madison might be busting out of a Monarch butterfly costume at the Electric Daisy Carnival. A newly married couple weaves its way through a casino floor; a massive, animatronic squirrel picks up an acorn in Bellagio’s Conservatory; an adult-sized Minion chats with a hirsute angel in pink pasties on Fremont Street as zipliners shoot themselves from a 77-foot-high slot machine overhead. You get the picture: Instagram seems purpose-built for Vegas. For the record, we’ll always dispute the idea that “Vegas doesn’t have character, it has characters.” But some of its characters are capturing the city and its surrounds at their wildest, wackiest, and most naturally beautiful. Watch them watch Vegas, and you’ll get some of the best insider views on everything from our nightlife and nature to fashion and food. In her own words! clockwise from above: ”Before Jubilee closed, they kindly let me borrow one of their iconic Bob Mackie costumes for a shoot. This was the day I brought him home!”; “My

Few have mastered the art of reinvention like Holly Madison, who first seared America’s eyeballs on E!’s The Girls Next Door, but is better known now by fans as mom to two Insta-gorgeous children and wife of Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella, and a bubblegum-sexy social media presence. The two-time author—Down the Rabbit Hole, about life with Hugh Hefner, became a #1 New York Times bestseller, which she followed with the recently released The Vegas Diaries—isn’t stopping at writing books (though she’s currently at work on a YA novel). “I don’t put myself in a box,” she says. “After I’ve accomplished a goal, I move on to something new.” And if you’re not already among her 4 million social media followers, don’t expect “just ‘Hey, look at me in a bikini’ pictures.’ My followers and I bond over being a new mom, music festivals, travel, or our nerdy fangirl obsessions. I try to include all aspects of my life on Instagram.”

husband had a bunch of tiny flamingo floaties at the house from a company party, so I decided to take a bath with them, because why not?”; “This one is at my Vegas home. I’m obsessed with chandeliers, the bigger the better.“; “I love all the amazing pictures from EDC, especially this one because the color palette is so fabulous!”

Inspirations: “Old Hollywood visuals. Also: Disney, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Game of Thrones.” Most memorable image: “A photo of my newborn son’s hand on mine.” Vegas love: “It’s a city full of interesting characters and eccentrics, and I love a good eccentric.” Shopping with Holly: “I love Palazzo (they have my favorite Louboutin store) and the Dolce & Gabbana at Crystals stocks amazing pieces.” 20 minutes in Vegas: “Somewhere with an amazing view, like Lago at Bellagio.” Most missed old school Vegas venue: “The Crazy Horse Paris. My friends and I used to go there all the time.” Best season: “Fall in Vegas. The weather is nice, the city’s not too busy, and everything feels like it’s starting over.” For more on Madison’s best of Vegas, go to vegasmagazine.com.

JEFF TIMMONS | ENTERTAINER He’s a singer, television producer, writer, performer, and host—but to any girl who grew up in the ’90s, he’s the Jeff Timmons (sob! wail!) of Grammy-nominated 98 Degrees, currently enjoying its renaissance from the recent MY2K Tour to nearly 40 cities across the country. Boy band devotees already know that he united with members of Backstreet Boys, O-Town, and NSYNC to star in and record a song for Nick Carter’s post-apocalyptic zombie western movie Dead 7 this year. But for Vegas locals, he’s also a neighbor and buddy who “started singing on a whim at a party in college” and now counts millions of fans from “concerts, TV appearances, collaborations with folks like Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder; performances at the White House, and for Michael Jackson, the list goes on.” The secret to his long-lived popularity might be that positive attitude and a combination of “faith, humility, self-belief, and an unrelenting work ethic”—but also smart use of social media and technology, he says, “to not only proliferate my own brand, but many of the television programs, live shows, and artists that I produce and develop.” Inspiration: “Being creative, providing for my family, and fear of failure.” Most frequent comment: “Most folks inquire when 98 Degrees will be in their city, or when they can come to Vegas to see a show I’m involved with.” Vegas love: “It’s the land of opportunity for an entertainer. It’s not oversaturated like Los Angeles, but there is so much to do here as a fan and an entertainer. The weather is great, the traffic is better, and the people in the business are tight-knit and loyal.” 20 minutes in Vegas: “Grab breakfast at Bite in Summerlin and check out the views in Red Rock.” Date night: “STK is amazing, but the Rio has a great steakhouse called VooDoo, and the views are to die for.” Old Vegas inspiration: “Once in a while, I like to check out ‘Old Town’ Las Vegas. That’s where this place began. A lot of history, and a ton of nostalgia.” For more on Timmons’s best of Vegas, go to vegasmagazine.com.

JOHN UM | CHEF @chefjohn

At first glance, you might think John Um’s collection of Instagram images depicts a gorgeous collection of brilliant flowers, or deeply saturated photorealistic paintings. Take a second look, and like his 47K followers, you’ll get pulled in to post after post of sushi as art. After all, he’s the sushi chef for SushiSamba in Las Vegas, Miami Beach, and Coral Gables (though he makes Vegas his home), and the nature of his business, he explains, “is to have a perfect culinary experience by achieving a balance of taste and artful presentation.” Always looking for exotic ingredients as inspiration, he began documenting his creations, ultimately using his Instagram page as a career portfolio. “Now I like to provide information about these unique dishes, and even some art work that inspires me.” His rainbows of artfully plated sushi regularly command upwards of 1,500 likes apiece, but this purist is no prima donna. He presents a single, minimal, phallic-looking geoduck with the hashtag “#calmdownitisjustaclam” and his tagline? “CHEF because badass motherf*cker is not an official job title.” Inspiration: “Everyone and everything. I hear my cooks and I get inspired, I experience other chefs’ dishes and get inspired,

clockwise from above: “This three-piece tiradito dish was made for one of the events at the Venetian. This twist includes tuna with apple lime sauce and serrano pepper; salmon with garlic ponzu, kinkan honey, and garlic chips; and yellowtail with lemongrass sauce and chili

I simply look at the sky and get inspired.” Toque solidarity: “I get a lot of compliments from different chefs around the world… wishing to try the dishes.” Vegas love: “Come on, everyone wants to be in Vegas! Las Vegas is like adults’ Disneyland. However, what people don’t know is that this place is not only about casinos and parties. We have a lot of cool places with art, and an outstanding culinary scene.” 20 minutes in Vegas: “Put $20 in a slot machine, enjoy a bottle of beer while playing with a minimum bet, then go all-in when you have one minute left.” Date place: “Seven Magic Mountains. This is where I asked my girl to marry me, so it is a special place for both of us.” Local hangouts: “Downtown Las Vegas! #dtlv. When you have all these vibes and art works around the streets, you cannot ask for more.” City view: “Mandarin Oriental Bar and Skyfall lounge at Delano.” For more on Um’s best of Vegas, go to vegasmagazine.com.

STEVE AOKI | MUSICIAN/PRODUCER @steveaoki

Social media platforms seem to bend to Steve Aoki’s will, since one of the most social of all international DJs was doing grassroots social media of his own long before the likes of Instagram. “Even in the MySpace days, I was throwing parties so I could DJ; I was on the ground, passing out flyers. I’m about the dissemination of information,” he adds. “That information was music, a new release on my label [Dim Mak Records, which he founded in 1996]. I was passionate about exposing Bloc Party to the world; party after party I’d give out CDs to people I knew. It starts with a genuine interest in how you present things.” In the Inst-era, Aoki says, “The presentation you give to people is as important as what’s inside.” That’s why his multimillion-follower social media presence is heavy on pictorial narrative. “You have to explain the story—the backstory and the labor that went into what they’re getting.” About his posts, he says, “I’m not selling things all the time. I’m showcasing different parts of my culture.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAESAR SEBASTIAN

Most memorable moment: “I was lucky enough to sit eye-view at the final presidential debate. And then I raced over to Hillary’s

rally in North Las Vegas, and I got a selfie with her and Bill. It was so cool and of-the-moment. I garnered over 100,000 likes, and I made a big deal of that on Snapchat.” Most frequent comment: “Usually where they’re from: ‘Come to Guatemala! Come to Istanbul! Come to Jakarta!’ The community that follows me is worldwide.” Secret skill: “Recharging on a five-minute nap. I’ll sleep anywhere. There’s no shame to the game. And I can do it in any vehicle you can imagine. I try to get my team to follow the same protocol so we can all reschedule.” Favorite local hangout: “I love Izakaya Go: You have to go to these little guys off the Strip, in these strip malls undercover.” Zen and the art of Vegas: “Local spots that are important for me have healthy options. I go to Protein House, Greens and Proteins, and Fruits & Roots is actually in my rider. When I travel their juices are always in my fridge ready to go.” 90 minutes in Vegas: “I’d go to Oracle, a gymnastics place where Cirque gymnasts train. I trained there and it was pretty amazing.” Most inspirational place: “My studio—it’s in my house. Surprising, off-kilter perspectives on Downtown Las Vegas, The Strip, and the mountains and desert around the Vegas valley have made John Carracedo a social media documentarian of sorts. A puffy cumulonimbus cloud dwarfs a Joshua tree in a dramatic desert landscape; the High Roller Ferris wheel bears down on a lone pedestrian. Carracedo’s unique perspective is, well, having a unique perspective. “I just go out into the world and shoot what I love and don’t worry about what others think,” he says, a modus operandi that has helped him land professional work with Sony, Dos Equis, and

As for inspiration? “I am open minded about everything, but what inspires me the most are sunrises and sunsets. THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN YOU’LL WANT TO MOVE IN TO THE NEW RH LAS VEGAS, THE GALLERY AT TIVOLI VILLAGE—AND THAT NICELY ALIGNS WITH CEO GARY FRIEDMAN’S VISION.

RH CEO Gary Friedman says this rooftop won’t become a party space, but it’s already hosted one of the year’s best, and Las Vegans might not take no for an answer.

BY ANDREA BENNETT

Known for design that offers a unique take on traditional forms, Restoration Hardware has made a latter-day leap into contemporary furnishings with the launch of RH Modern. But while other home furnishings and design businesses move toward selling in the virtual realm, RH CEO Gary Friedman is assertively going the opposite direction. Namely, in openings like the new RH Gallery (340 S. Rampart Blvd., 775-4640770; rh.com), which, at 60,000 square feet over four floors of a classical contemporary manse, anchors the expansion of Tivoli Village. It is immediately recognizable, with its charcoal-gray Venetian plaster exterior, an entrance of 30-foot-high glass-and-steel arches, and courtyards filled with lush fig ivy and towering date palms. A rooftop park and conservatory is studded with mature heritage olive trees—as if someone lives here. And that is quite the point, as Friedman told us in a recent conversation about RH’s future. I hesitate to call RH Gallery a store, since I’d like to just move in. Most retailers build a storefront or slap up a big box building. We’re building spaces with fresh air and natural light—really more home than store. We don’t do this because it’s a novelty idea. It allows people to explore and experience in a

SPACE DEBUT brand is really important. The more three-dimensional the experience, the deeper connection a person can have. If you’re selling commodities, this isn’t so important. There’s no need for a person to interact with a box of Tide laundry detergent before they buy it! How do you see the RH experience evolving? These new design galleries are in their very early states. There will be a whole floor dedicated to RH Modern—our new business in the last year. The vast majority of team members are interior designers or consultants with strong design backgrounds. Our design ethos is based on our belief that the most pleasing design is a reflection of human design, and we are helping people realize their own vision.

Our consultants in the Design Atelier are there to understand how people can amplify their own space and even help them conceive a space that they might not be able to imagine on their own. In Vegas, the rooftop area seems particularly inspired because of our weather. We’re excited to be in Las Vegas, and we’ve allocated more outdoor space here than to any other Gallery because we know that people love their outdoor spaces. We’re trying to express who we are in the most authentic and dynamic way we can. I understand the idea of experiencing a space, but 60,000 square feet is really large! ASIA CALLING

THE CITY’S FIRST NEW-BUILD HOTEL CASINO IN 6 YEARS, LUC Y DRAGON MOVES CHINATOWN TO THE STRIP’S NORTH END.

Lucky Dragon developers are expecting an influx of Chinese gamers from Las Vegas and beyond to this ruby-colored hotel casino on Sahara; both décor and games are aimed toward a Chinese crowd, and those looking for a transporting experience.

You can easily find Las Vegas in Asia (see Singapore’s Marina Bay, Macau’s Cotai Strip) But with the valley now home to the fastest growing Asian population in the United States, and an even larger one in Southern California, catering to this community is crucial. From noodle bars to gaming, most resorts have made (subtle) accommodations, but in December, the brand-new Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino (300 W. Sahara Ave.; luckydragon.com) goes all in. Everything that can feasibly be colored (lucky) red has been—from the exterior of the 203-room hotel tower to accent pillows on the bed. The 27,500 squarefoot casino emphasizes table games such as Pai gow and baccarat; a tea garden is served by a tea sommelier; and restaurants range from dim sum to Cantonese dining, to a night marketstyle food hall. “All signs are in Chinese first, English second,” says developer Andy Fonfa. “We’re offering the Asian community a real opportunity to showcase their culture.” Just a couple of traffic lights south, Malaysia’s Genting Group—the team behind Resorts World, one of Asia’s best known gaming resort brands— is finally beginning work on their $4 billion dollar mega-project. With 3,000 rooms, a permanent exhibit of China’s famed terra-cotta warriors, live pandas, and even scaled-down Great Wall, the resort isn’t just aiming at any one market. Nervous, much? Not Lucky Dragon, where executives have done their homework. Fonfa is hugely optimistic, hinting at growth plans like a walkable neighborhood with dining and retail, easily accessible on foot from any north Strip hotel. “Between this and future projects ,” Fonfa says, “the North Strip will be the new Chinatown.”

If “Park People,” Nathan Sawaya’s human figures made entirely of LEGOs and placed in MGM’s The Park between New York-New York and Monte Carlo seem familiar, you may have seen his large-scale works in public spaces around the globe. He’s collaborated with Lady Gaga for a music video; made a life-sized LEGO rendition of Stephen Colbert, which he presented to the talk show host on The Colbert Report; and appropriated several well-known works: Michelangelo’s David, Klimt’s The Kiss, and Duchamp’s Fountain. In October, an installation of Sawaya’s life-sized monochromatic human figures covered the White House’s South Lawn for an event focused on science, technology, and climate change. At MGM, the “Park People” serve as secret keepers. [People are welcome to sit with the sculptures and even converse with them,” Sawaya says, explaining that he strives to create intimacy between viewers and art by making it accessible. “One of the reasons I use a child’s toy as an art medium is to make the artwork relatable, and by placing this installation in the public where they can interact with it, it furthers that goal,” he says. The meticulous craftsmanship involving only the toy bricks is so engrossing that Sawaya was able to leave his job as an attorney in 2004 to work as a full-time artist. Have a similar life goal? Tell it to the sculpture. Through January. theparkvegas.com

GOING UP! WHERE DO THE CITY’S TOP REAL ESTATE BROKERS SEE THE MARKET GOING NEXT YEAR? IN A WORD, HIGHER. BY ANDY WANG

“BUYERS CONTINUE TO PURCHASE RESIDENCES ON THE STRIP AND DO NOT HESITATE WHEN IT COMES TO PRICE.” —matthew brimhall

With low condo inventory and no new residential buildings on the Strip in the pipeline, CityCenter’s Mandarin Oriental and Veer Towers should see rising prices and a flurry of activity. “Many of the transactions we have completed as a firm in 2016 have been driven by the lack of inventory in the market, especially on the penthouse level and in the most exclusive high-rise towers, such as Mandarin, where we have closed transactions from $1.6 million to $3.2 million,” says Matthew Brimhall of MDB Realty (mdbrealty.com). “Buyers continue to purchase residences on the Strip from locations worldwide and do not hesitate when it comes to price and/or terms.” “There’s no new inventory at this point,” agrees Mike Bell, who partners with Jennifer Graff at Graff Luxury Team (graffluxuryteam.com). “That’s what I tell clients when somebody needs a high-rise condo: ‘They need to buy yours.’” Bell remembers selling preconstruction condos at CityCenter, which makes him see tremendous upside in 2017. “We were selling condos for $1,000 a square foot, and there was nothing there,” he says. Modern art meets moderne style in Penthouse 4103 at Mandarin Oriental.

than other cities with Mandarin Oriental condos, like New York and London. “If they love it, price is the least important thing.”

BIGGER IS BETTER

NEXT UP: NORTH STRIP!

“Right now, we have a lot of clients wanting luxury,” says Shari Sanderson (lasvegas condomania.com), who’s sold numerous Mandarin units with her Award Realty partner Michele Manley. “Luxury with massive square footage resembling the huge mansions of 2005– 2006 that were so popular. The difference now is our pricing is extremely low compared to California and our tax structure is so much lower. Buyers from California are looking at Vegas as the no-brainer.” “The space is critical,” says Bell, who adds that combining units can drive sales in a market priced much lower

The action is moving north, with Steve Wynn’s expansion, the new W tower at SLS, the new Lucky Dragon casino, and the forthcoming Resorts World Casino adding fire to the market. “All of those new projects are going to revolutionize the Strip,” Brimhall says. This should raise the profile and prices at nearby condo towers like Sky and Allure, where it’s easy to find residences for less than what it would cost to build them. I think there’s tremendous upside to the condos. Anytime you can buy something below replacement cost, it’s tough to make a bad decision.”

SPACE THE GUIDE

NEWLY RENOVATED GREEN VALLEY RANCH The 500-room Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa & Casino gave Henderson its first taste of grand-scale luxury when it opened 15 years ago. And its brand-new renovation employs some pretty fabulous details. First, think high-tech: Every light in the hotel was changed to LED to save power. One of the massive lobby chandeliers only uses 120w total – about the energy of a standard home lightbulb. The Race and Sports Book’s five new hi-def LED video displays use 2.5mm Nanoslim Engage displays that are nearly 12 feet tall and 21 feet wide—the best viewing technology in the world. Take a look, too, for the Travertine marble from Peru; Italian Calcutta Gold tile on the Coffee Shop walls; Spanish limestone on the Promenade columns, and Italian vanilla onyx in the VIP room. Here’s to the next 15 years in glamour for the south end of valley! 2300 Paseo Verde Pkwy, Henderson; 702-617-7777; greenvalleyranch.sclv.com

LIVING LAS VEGAS

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The oldest continuously run casino-hotel in Vegas, El Cortez was fab then and is fab now; Ellie Goulding does a little self-examining in Bertie Gaughan’s pink bath; the refreshed retro dining room; Goulding and partner in crime saunter through the casino floor; a sculpture in the dining room.

HOW SUITE IT IS VEGAS’S SEXIEST SEPTUAGENARIAN (HOTEL, THAT IS) SHOWS HOW IT’S DONE. BY ANDREA BENNETT

In her video for that catchy earworm “On My Mind,” Ellie Goulding endures the rantings of a sharkskin suit-wearing boyfriend from the bed of a fabulous, retro blush-colored bedroom; rides horses through the casino floor of El Cortez with a hot female sidekick; and gets glammed up in the beauty parlor—along with sidekick and horse—before

wreaking violent revenge on same boyfriend. No special effects here, explains El Cortez Executive Manager Alex Epstein, whose family owns the hotel. “The horses took the freight elevators to our offices,” she laughs. “There was a cleanup crew following them through the casino floor.” And that might not be the wildest thing that’s ever happened

in the longest continuously run hotel and casino in Las Vegas, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in November. Owned in the 1940s by, among others, Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky, forward thinking keeps El Cortez hip (think its mob-themed Siegel’s 1941 restaurant, locally decorated OAK suites, and its Founder’s Room now a

Hong Kong-style reflexology parlor). Lucky for Vegasphiles, the Epsteins are keeping the best of the retro details. That blush suite is onetime owner Jackie Gaughan’s real-life penthouse, from which he could survey his Downtown holdings. Its renovation just finished, the 3,500-plus-foot party pad (available for rent by appointment) retains wife

Bertie’s completely pink marble bath, with gilded swan fixtures and pin-up fairies floating in etched glass bubbles; ’80’s-era inlaid carpeting; and an ’80s-era security system in every room whose screen lets you see whoever might be at the door—even a shotgun-wielding pop star on a horse. 600 Fremont St., 702-385-5200; elcortezhotelcasino.com
