It’s been 15 years since a group of Australian imports stripped down to their skivvies at the Frontier and gave Las Vegas ladies something to scream about. Today, Thunder From Down Under still goes boom at the Excalibur some 13 times a week, but the toned and tanned lads are hardly the only guys showing off their

goods on the Strip. In fact, they’re not even the only Australians. The lineup of male revues in Las Vegas currently includes Aussie Heat, Men of Sapphire, and the bow-tied beefcakes of Chippendales—enough pumped up pecs and tearaway pants to rival the city’s famous female topless shows. But is the male revue

evolving from simply a way to give drunk bachelorettes a naughty outlet of their own to more of, say, a statement on gender roles and diversity? Recently, Vivica A. Fox announced plans to bring some Black Magic to Las Vegas, while actor/ dancer/stripper/entrepreneur Channing Tatum is set to debut Magic Mike Live

Las Vegas at the Hard Rock in March. With a cast of dancers who’ve performed with folks like Justin Timberlake, choreographer Alison Faulk says the raw talent alone is sexy, but she’s focused on making Club Domina (the real incarnation of the movie’s fictional Savannah, Georgia, strip club, run by a woman) a

place where women feel confident and free. “We want to create a space where women feel comfortable, where they can let it all hang out and feel empowered and feel like it’s okay to ask for more,” says Faulk. “Some of them might be like, ‘Don’t touch me,’ and some of them might be like, ‘Touch me more!’”

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

An oldie-but-goodie editor’s letter trope is the florid description of the change of seasons. As dependable as the seasons themselves, you can count on seeing this conceit in spring and fall, and read about how all that seasonal fluctuation lets you start anew/ clean house/cozy up to the fire/rotate in your Wellies and cashmere. Even better if you can anthropomorphize it— I mean “her.” Unfortunately, this device is only useful when you have, for instance, seasons. As I write this, we’re well into September, still searsuckering our way through triple digits, and the first harbinger of fall I’ve seen is the Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks. A quick stroll

through my local Target revealed not only the brand new Pumpkin Spice Cheerios, but also PS Toll House cookie dough. I mean, even Peeps is making PS chicks. Fall is upon us, friends, and she’s making her wishes known. You can keep your seasons: What Las Vegas offers in the way of autumnal color change is the vibrant plumage in our packed gala season, which has already started. It’s been a significant year for anniversaries. Caesars Palace celebrates its 50th, Nevada Ballet Theatre its 45th season, Aid for AIDS of Nevada its 30th, Discovery Children’s Museum its 25th, and the Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada Fashion Show luncheon its 10th, just to

name a few. Congratulations to all, and to various pumpkin growers’ associations around America, for their everincreasingly profitable marketing campaigns. We may not be able to offer you fall weather, but I can offer you our Late Fall issue of Vegas, full of good ideas about what to wear, where to eat, what to do and see, and where to purchase some fall weather nearby (along with giant cabins to go with it, in our real estate piece on page103). For Vegas, she interviewed designer Karl Lagerfeld for her coverage of Fendi’s 90th anniversary.

For our cover story, Catherine De Orio interviewed chef Gordon Ramsay. A formally trained chef, media spokesperson, and journalist, she is the host of the Emmy awardwinning dining review show Check, Please!

What did you learn about Lagerfeld from this interview? Across the board, the questions he refused to answer were what we in the journalism trade call “fluffy.” In other words, Lagerfeld was all business. I found that interesting. What’s your favorite fall fashion trend? Velvet. Somehow it looks fresh right now, both saturated in color and textured. What have been your most memorable moments covering fashion? Meeting and interviewing Miuccia Prada and Alexander McQueen. Prada was a true intellectual and McQueen was light and told jokes.

What was it like getting to know the Vegas Gives honorees? I was impressed by how much these women have accomplished. Many hold high-power jobs, have families and still manage to dedicate their time and attention to these worthy charities. Have you been to any male revues? The women in my family flew to Vegas for a birthday and we went to Thunder from Down Under, and my mom fell asleep. In her defense, she was on East Coast time. Did you get any behindthe-scenes details on Magic Mike Las Vegas? Choreographer Alison Faulk said she brought in her girlfriends to be the audience and get lap dancers from prospective cast members. I was like, “Where was my invite?”

What was your private tour of the Foundation Room like? I can’t believe I’d never been to any of the Foundation Room spaces affiliated with House of Blues venues around the country, but especially this ornate flagship at the top of Mandalay Bay. Even during the light of day, the space—rich with antique Tibetan artifacts and twisting hallways—feels like a cross between J.P. Morgan’s private offices and Keith Richards’s private bacchanal. What else did you do on your trip to Vegas? I’m always fascinated with the growth of both better dining and drinking spots. We also got to ride The High Roller at The Linq, finally. Amazing views and, hey! A bar car!

So you survived your interview with Gordon Ramsay! What were your impressions? He’s surprisingly soft-spoken, which came as a bit of a shock. Luckily he didn’t completely deny me a tiny glimpse into the Chef Ramsay we know from TV: When he gets passionate about something, he tells you exactly what he thinks and uses some colorful language to do so—if only the rest of the world could drop the F-bomb with such aplomb! But he’s earned the right to demand the highest standards. And when he speaks about his staff and business partners, it’s clear that he respects those that strive for excellence. Plus, he shared his secret for the best fish and chips with me—I’m a fan.

The first and only performer ever offered a lifetime contract at Caesars Palace, Tony Bennett was also the first to arrive on the red carpet for the hotel’s 50th-anniversary gala celebration on August 6. The 90-year-old entertainer clearly took the “lifetime” idea seriously, as he belted out some of the songs he might have sung at age 40 as the second performer ever to appear at the Circus Maximus showroom in 1966. In front of a packed crowd in the Octavius Ballroom, he also accepted the Caesars Palace Icon Award. The show opened with Wayne Newton, Donny and Marie Osmond, and Matt Goss performing “Viva Las Vegas.” Jennifer Lopez made a special appearance, as did gala honoree Gordon Ramsay, and Bill Medley and Bucky Heard— better known as The Righteous Brothers—who sang two songs. Children of Caesars founder Jay Sarno accepted the Founder’s Icon Award. Calvin Harris was also on hand to accept an Icon Award, as were the Knievel family, Larry Ruvo, and Caesars Palace President Gary Selesner, while Céline Dion, Jerry Seinfeld, and Elton John accepted theirs via video. International Boxing Hall of Famer Thomas “Hitman” Hearns presented an Icon Award to Rasheda Ali in honor of her late father, Muhammad Ali. One of the night’s most memorable moments? The giant birthday cake brought out by the event’s master of ceremonies, Howie Mandel, to celebrate newly minted nonagenarian Bennett.

Caesars Palace hosted a star-studded, invite-only dinner to celebrate its 50th anniversary in Las Vegas on August 6. The weekend started off with a bang the night before, when Gordon Ramsay hosted a pool party at Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis with fireworks, a Champagne toast, and a cakecutting ceremony. The night of the gala, attendees were greeted on their way to the ballroom by celeb impersonators associated with Caesars history, such as Liberace, Muhammad Ali, Evel Knievel, and Cher. Some of the night’s most tender moments included standing ovations for a dozen employees who had been with the company for more than 45 years. Later, attendees themselves received an ovation from Caesars employees lining the corridors as they exited the gala.

On August 20, nearly 4,000 guests donned their best black and white for the 30th annual Aid for AIDS Foundation of Nevada (AFAN) Black and White Party at Aria. Brands such as Bacardi, Jim Beam, Basil Hayden’s, Tito’s, Three Olives, Absolut, and more provided cocktails for the crowd, and guests were treated to delectable food from Aria restaurants including Herringbone, Carbone, Sage, and Bardot. Host of Mondays Dark Mark Shunock and the “Bearded Lady of Las Vegas” Norma Llyaman introduced performances by Human Nature, Cirque du Soleil, 53X, and local nonprofit dance troupe Culture Shock. We all have a friend who’s just a little more awesome than we are—adventurous, self-made, and a liberal sharer of his global whiskey collection. His name is probably Kyle. At least, Kyle is the fictional character around whom Chef Shawn McClain and Studio Munge designer Alessandro Munge built their new bar-meetskitchen-meets-hangout space, Libertine Social. “We did a cool trip with Tony [Abou-Ganim, master mixologist] and Chef to the Abbot Kinney neighborhood in Venice Beach,” Munge explains. Inspired, they came up with a place for this world’s most interesting character to entertain— alongside an open kitchen, a dining room hung with his pictures, and in his bar-withina-bar serving barrel-aged and draft cocktails and history-inspired punches. “Kyle sort of became Shawn’s alter-ego,” Munge laughs. Expect casual apps a chef would serve at home, like Scotch olives (stuffed with lamb and feta and deep fried) and a sausage board with homemade merguez, hot sausage, and bratwurst. Imagine Kyle (as McClain) turning out a perfectly charred Snake River Farms Wagyu skirt steak from his mesquite grill, a pile of travelinspired, harissa rubbed mussels, or his Modern Fried Egg, cooked sous vide with sweet corn custard and topped with sturgeon caviar, served in its own shell. Is the city enthusiastic? The building will fully sell out for the first season,

and likely the second and third, so I’d say that’s excitement. And do you think tourists will go to games? Vegas knows how to make this a spectacle, and people whose home teams are playing will come to Vegas just to make a weekend out of it. Think anyone ever says, “Hey, let’s go to Columbus for the weekend?” So does this mean you’ll lose your allegiance to the Maple Leafs? Vegas and Toronto are in separate conferences, so the only time I’d have a question of

allegiances is if they both got good enough for the finals. Aside from the glitz, what makes Vegas a great hockey town? For one thing, there’s no state tax. If you offer $3 million to a player here, he’ll make more money than in other cities. Plus, hockey cities like Edmonton are cold! It’s going to be really easy to attract a young, single kid to Las Vegas. Across the city, we’ll get kids engaged from an early age. The age of añejo: As master distillers begin aging tequila longer, the rise of extra-añejos is placing Mexico’s national spirit on the top shelf among whiskeys and Cognacs—and in rocks glasses as straight-no-chaser sippers.

It’s no secret that spirits aficionados have long reached for premium whiskeys and Cognacs, but high-end labels are responding to rising demand for sip-worthy tequilas with astonishing depth and flavor. From artisanal new-crop distilleries to world-famous brands, master distillers have begun barrel-aging the blue agave–based spirit for years, allowing the wood to layer rich notes of vanilla and caramel atop agave’s natural spice. But what

exactly makes for a sipping tequila? “First and foremost it cannot be fiery,” explains Tad Carducci, bar consultant and author of A Lime and a Shaker: Discovering Mexican-Inspired Cocktails. “But the tequila has to have an intensity of flavor, and it should offer a long, lingering finish.” Consider, for example, Dulce Vida Extra Añejo ($160 for 750 ml), aged for five years in former Napa Valley red wine barrels, which impart juicy, round, fruity notes. Meanwhile,

Herradura Selección Suprema Extra Añejo ($350) offers soft, Cognaclike flavors of stone fruit and hazelnut. And Gran Patrón Piedra ($400), the luxury brand’s first-ever extra-añejo, is a silky, rounded sipper with plenty of caramel and spice. Interest in premium tequilas is on the rise, says Chantal Martineau, tequila expert and author of How the Gringos Stole Tequila: The Modern Age of Mexico’s Most Traditional Spirit. Thanks in part to celeb-backed

brands, “people are associating tequila with sophistication and style.” Furthering that association, she says, is the the evolution of Mexican cuisine from street fare into more sophisticated dining. While these selections are delicious on their own, is it okay to mix a high-end tequila into a cocktail? “Of course!” Martineau affirms. Skip the prickly pear margaritas, she suggests, and “make a stirred, spiritforward cocktail that really lets the tequila shine.”

Cyndi Lauper’s perception of Las Vegas irrevocably changed one night, nearly 20 years ago, at MGM Grand. “The story is, I sat down in the open lounge and watched my cousin, Johnny Edwards, doing his Elvis impression,” recalls Lauper, who plays the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel on October 8. “I was pregnant at the time, and I felt like the city was just stale air-

conditioning everywhere. But I was hanging out with my cousin and I thought, You know, this is good. I’m having a good time here. It was the first time I actually enjoyed being in Vegas.” Lauper has since recorded her “Drove All Night” video at the old Frontier hotel in Las Vegas, toured the city as the special guest of Cher, and in 2014 attended the premiere of the touring production of

Kinky Boots, for which she wrote the music, at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Her new show blends selections from her 1980s hits and her new, country-flavored album, Detour, in which she duets with Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, and Alison Krauss. In fact, Lauper’s countryinflected album might not be such a departure after all. “Detour was inspired by

Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson, Brenda Lee, Big Momma Thornton… and I basically studied a lot of singers who recorded at Sun Records,” Lauper says. “It is very much in keeping with that rockabilly sound that had a twang. As it moves into its middle teens, blue chip art fair Art Basel Miami Beach’s position in the global art world has never been higher. “Every show is marked by the high quality of galleries participating,” says Art Basel’s Director Americas, Noah Horowitz. “However, this year also affords an opportunity to look back at the show’s past 15 years and its tremendous impact on Miami and international engagement with the art scenes across the Americas.” Beginning with by-invitation-only VIP events on November 30—which bring out major-league collectors—and opening to the public on December 1, ABMB will bring together 270 galleries from 30 countries. The five-day fest also anticipates more than 77,000 visitors, including the usual boldfaced names (with bank accounts to match), such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. As the fair has grown so has its distinct sectors, which currently include Galleries, Nova, Positions, Survey, Edition, Film, Kabinett, and Public, featuring outdoor installations and larger-scale works. “Fendi is Italian to its core,” says longtime creative director Karl Lagerfeld. “It’s not only Italian, it’s Roman.” The wonderfully prolific Lagerfeld, who has been at the helm of Fendi for longer than many of us have been alive— since 1965—claims it’s easy to differentiate the Italian collection from those of Chanel and his namesake label, the other two fashion houses under his direction. “I don’t have one personality, I have three,” the designer muses. “Fendi is my Italian version, Chanel my French version, and Lagerfeld is my own version. I never made something that looked like Chanel at Fendi and never made something that looked like Fendi at Chanel, because both have a [separate] identity.” There is perhaps no greater tribute to Fendi’s quintessential romanità than the staging of its 90th anniversary fashion show upon Rome’s Trevi fountain in July. Models literally walked on water—an illusion created by a clear platform placed over the newly-restored fountain and pool—revealing a collection inspired by illustrations of legends and fairy tales. “Very romantic, but modern at the same time,” says Lagerfeld of the collection, which comprised whimsical, flowing dresses, many with

Part and parcel of the 90th-anniversary collection, Fendi has released a limitededition Selleria Peekaboo handbag, a one-of-a-kind accessory made entirely by hand in 60 pieces. The bag features punto baseball, or baseball stitching, a larger-form stitching technique handed down through the generations by Roman master saddlers. The Peekaboo bags are exclusively sold at the Palazzo Fendi boutique in Rome. And, if you happen to be in the Italian capital, head to the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, where you will find “Fendi Roma: The Artisans of Dreams” (through October 29), an exhibition that celebrates the maison’s nine decades of craftsmanship and creativity. For those who can’t make it to Rome, the short film Fendi: Hands Make Beauty (viewable online) highlights the brand’s evolution, and the coffee-table book Fendi Roma, a recent release from Assouline, explores Fendi’s connection with the Eternal City. Lagerfeld, now 83, says he’s still brimming with ideas and is given the freedom to create what he wants at Fendi. So expect plenty more from Italian Karl in years to come. In 1837, after two years of travel on foot from his small, working-class burg in eastern France, a young Louis Vuitton arrived in Paris to apprentice with a respected box-maker and packing workshop. Children who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition hope to be granted all manner of wishes—from the heartbreaking to the hilarious. And raising money to grant those wishes is the goal of the Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada Fashion Show (snv.wish.org) luncheon at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in the Forum Shops at Caesars. It’s also the fashion show of the season and 2016 marks its 15th year. Past designers have

included Oscar de la Renta, Fendi, Valentino, and Tory Burch, among others; this year Emilio Pucci, whose designs graced the 10th-anniversary show, makes a return appearance. Chair of the Fashion Show committee Linda Richardson, who has, along with her husband, Bill, long spearheaded the organization’s Southern Nevada chapter, says it’s about helping the child, naturally, “but also about the joy and

happiness it brings to their whole families.” Not every Make-A-Wish child wants to go to Disneyland: Spago’s longtime executive chef, Eric Klein, was a big part of one child’s wish experience, helping her to make gallons of soup to feed the homeless. [Klein has recently left Spago to work on a new Puck project.] Says Richardson, “This little girl could have anything possible, but that was her thing—and it was just amazing.” snv.wish.org

“It’s exciting to design modern menswear [by] exploring the deep roots of Lands’ End’s archives for inspiration,” says Ian Velardi, men’s design director of Canvas by Lands’ End—a former collection that has been reprised and reimagined with ultra-modern touches. “Ideas were pulled from our vault, making this season’s collection rooted in our brand’s history.”

There’s plenty of evidence of that strategy. Cozy fall sweaters play up retro elements from pieces past, such as vintage knit patterns. A merino wool turtleneck with chunky waffle stitch stands out, along with detailed yet functional outerwear pieces like the Combat jacket, featuring a water-resilient shell and removable quilted liner. With trim tailoring and modern silhouettes, the collection represents

what’s exciting about men’s fashion today while celebrating the company’s history. That history is a great American entrepreneurial tale beginning in the early ’60s in a humble basement office on Chicago’s Elston Avenue. Gordon Ramsay’s accomplishments read like a conqueror intent on world domination. Known as Flash (as in Flash Gordon) during his stint in professional football, he now keeps fit training for Ironman triathlons and ultra-marathons. The first Scottish chef to be awarded a Michelin star, he went on to collect an additional five. His growing restaurant portfolio (gordonramsayrestaurants.com) includes 30 places across the globe, and a newly minted three-title publishing deal brings his book total to 30. He is the executive producer and star of five hit shows on Fox and recently started a solely-owned production company, Studio Gordon Ramsay. An officer of the Order of the British Empire, he gave another queen a run for her money (literally)—tying with Beyoncé for earnings on the Forbes Celebrity 100. Now he’s turned his intense focus on Vegas with his fourth restaurant here, Fish & Chips, opening on the Linq Promenade in October. Watch your back, Houses Flay, Puck, and Robuchon. “It’s about standards and I want to be remembered for that... It’s just the way I am,” says food prophet/king Gordon Ramsay, whose LV fiefdom now includes four restaurants.

Before you opened your restaurants in Las Vegas, what kind of on-the-ground research did you do in town? I went low-key, cap-on and started having a look at the food scene. Wolfgang was prominent, Ducasse was just on the verge of opening Mix—so there was a lot of excitement happening in the early 2000s. I did about six trips in and out and was highly impressed every time. Your first restaurant, Gordon Ramsay Steak, didn’t open until 2012. We opened New York and after, LA—it’s a very easy hop from LA to Vegas. I put it on a slow burner. It was fascinating to see and so I kept an eye on it. How much time do you spend in Vegas? I’m here about 12 to 14 times a year. So a lot. A hell of a lot. I like to get up into the mountains with my bike and then do a 60–70 kilometer intense hilly bike ride. That’s my little getaway—it’s just me and the mountains.

What can we expect from Fish & Chips? A little bit of cool Britannia, a bit of nostalgia—I’ve been dying to do it. It’s a grab-and-go fish and chip shop. In the UK we call them chippies. The first treat we ever had, you know with mum and dad, was a fish supper and it was just fish and chips. We never had the money to have our own so we had to share with our siblings. That was a huge treat. I am excited in general, but I’ve never been this excited! Going down to the local chippy on the corner and picking up the fish and chips with the little extra batter bits, the scraps we call them, was a dream. To have that now on the Linq in Vegas is sort of the icing on the cake for me. Four years in, is there anything that surprises you about Vegas? Well, we are in the middle of the desert, but the level of ingredients and products that gets into Vegas is extraordinary. Whether it’s Santa Barbara prawns or the most amazing shellfish from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts—everything is in abundance. So there are no excuses. The produce is a bit of a chef’s dream, which I didn’t expect. The quality of the proteins is equal to anything in New York, Paris, London, and I can confirm that because I have restaurants in them all. Let’s talk Masterchef Season 7: The audience pulls for a contestant they like, but you are known for your exacting standards—so what’s your strategy? Having been such a selfish individual to get to the top, I am the opposite when it comes to amateurs. I put them through a rigorous path in a way—I push them to the limits. Are you doing this for TV or are you doing this because you really want to learn the best? So I have to wear that hat because they are amateurs. You executive produce these shows. On Masterchef, poor Nathan Barnhouse had a breakdown and fainted, so you are sympathetic but as a producer, let’s be honest, it’s TV gold. We set out these challenges before the contestants arrive. They get better as we turn up the heat so we adjust that on a daily basis. So when we are live and the challenge is on, I am a mentor. When we are down and creating that kind of unscripted drama, I am an executive producer. People who work with you say lovely things. Yet, on camera you are ferocious. Are you playing to the camera a wee bit? That jacket goes on and I become a different beast because it’s about standards and I want to be remembered for that. So am I hamming it up for the camera because I think it looks good? Far from it. It’s real. So that level of passion gets misconstrued for anger. I’m live, it’s just the way I am. Has your direct, keep-it-very-real manner ever had any repercussions you’ve regretted? There are times I’ve felt I’ve gone too far but yeah, I’ve made amends to pull it back up and put it back on track. Yeah definitely, but I suppose that’s the guy I am. It’s all or nothing. I don’t think it’s… listen, you guys nominated Donald Trump for president! That guy thinks it’s a reality TV show. No one has told him yet that this is real. So anyway, those closest to me and those that work alongside me, not for me—because we are all a team—will give you the real insight. Many chefs fall prey to TV “glamour” and neglect their restaurants. Yet you are maintaining high standards and opening new concepts. Why? I started from zero and it’s so incredible. So I can’t sit back at 50. Am I ready to stop? No. I’ve found the balance in terms of family, profession and then this sort of empire size. I have seen so many chefs fall to the wayside because they got wrapped up in the glamour of fame and adulation—it’s gone to their head and they are turning out a pile of shit behind the scenes. That would be the death of me—I couldn’t live with myself on that one. You are becoming king of the Vegas kingdom… Don’t say that, I will get into more shit now! I threw down a challenge for Bobby Flay to go live and do a cook-off and put all the money to charity, and honestly now I’m like, C’mon Bobby, sign the deal. “Gordon Ramsay takes crown from Bobby Flay!” [Laughs] No! “Takes the crown of Vegas”—I can live with that! Failure doesn’t seem to be an option for you—have you ever failed? I have failed. I failed at turning up for parents evening at my kids’ school. And then when I went to the next one with my youngest, Tilly, I asked the headmaster for a selfie, after which I got kicked out, and so I really f-cked that one up! The following day I received an email saying, “Can you please refrain from the next parents evening—we do not need the presence of Mr. Ramsay.” You have reached the upper echelon of the culinary and media worlds, raise loads for charity, and are a family man. What do you want the Gordon Ramsay legacy to be? My legacy would be just like my mum taught me: It’s important to share and keep both feet firmly on the ground. Continue with that and I think I’ll be in business a long time.

Kate Zhong Keep MeMory Alive

Six years ago Dr. Kate Zhong arrived in Las Vegas with her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, on a mission: to lead the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health’s clinical research efforts in finding new treatments for Parkinson’s, traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer’s. The latter is at the heart of Keep Memory Alive, the foundation created by Larry Ruvo in honor of his father, which supports the Cleveland Clinic. “Every 60 seconds here in the U.S. someone will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s,” says Zhong. “It’s becoming an epidemic.” While Zhong recently left her post to join the Global Alzheimer’s Platform, she’ll continue to work closely with the Cleveland Clinic and champion the goals of Keep Memory Alive. “One of our missions is to help people cherish their memories and to help them keep their memories alive for now and for many years to come.” keepmemoryalive.org

As secretary of the board of trustees for Nevada Ballet Theatre, Lauri Thompson has an insider understanding of the long-running company. But her relationship with NBT goes much deeper. The shareholder attorney at Greenberg Traurig originally moved to Las Vegas in 1980 as a ballet dancer and spent two years performing with the company. Today, Thompson is less focused on pointed toes and pirouettes and more excited about the company’s outreach to local students through the in-school Future Dance program. “They develop self-esteem, a strong work ethic. Dance isn’t just about succeeding at dance,” Thompson says. The former ballerina also stresses NBT’s wide-ranging repertoire and its efforts to connect with the greater Vegas community. “A lot of people have a preconceived notion that ballet is Swan Lake. When Realtor Tanya Murray’s 14-year-old son was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes last year, a disease she’d only loosely understood came into stark focus. While he spent four days in the pediatric ICU, Murray got a crash course in pancreatic function, insulin and blood sugar, as well as an email from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). “When your head is just spinning,” she says, JDRF is a “lifeline.” Dedicated to improving the treatment of and finding a cure for type 1 diabetes, the organization also does vital outreach, letting families confronted with a fundamental change know that they’re not alone. Murray joined the JDRF Nevada chapter board earlier this year, and today she and her son have become experts in managing his disease. “He just got back from a three-week study program in Cambridge, England, that he went to by himself,” Murray says. “Because of the research that JDRF tirelessly works for and campaigns for, he was able to do that.” jdrf.com

For Staci Columbo-Alonso, there’s a direct path from her work for philanthropic Las Vegans like Diana Bennett and the Fertitta family and her own charitable contributions. The Station Casinos executive vice president of innovation and administration joined the board of domestic violence shelter Shade Tree in 2001, and in 2007 she founded Noah’s Animal House, a shelter for the pets of women staying there. Before Noah’s, many women would return to their abusers rather than relinquish a cherished member of the family. Now, women whose pets stay at Noah’s have a less than 2 percent return rate, and the organization is currently expanding to Northern Nevada. “The pet provides them the healing and the courage to stay long enough to break the cycle,” she says, “and move forward with their lives.” noahsanimalhouse.org

lin jerome Green Our Planet Ever since Lin Jerome joined mother-daughter organization National Charity League as a child, philanthropy has been an important part of her life. These days the co-founder and owner of interactive marketing company the Refined Agency also leads Ladies Who Dine, a three-year-old social and charitable organization that connects women to local non-profits and each other through restaurant events. “We want to make sure philanthropy is accessible to all and not just those with very deep pockets,” Jerome says. One of the organizations LWD has championed is Green Our Planet, which creates outdoor garden classrooms in Clark County public schools. “In the past two and a half years, they’ve completed 90 gardens in our school district,” says Jerome. But Green Our Planet isn’t resting on its very verdant laurels. The organization’s next goal? “It’s quite interesting to watch a child learn at the same time that they’re having fun,” says Stephanie Stallworth. The director of public and community relations for Cox Las Vegas witnessed that moment with her own children at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, so when LVNHM Executive Director Marilyn Gillespie asked her to join the board in 2002, Stallworth stepped right up. Recently, she’s taken her philanthropy further, joining the board of an organization close to her heart and her day job, Speedway Children’s Charities, founded by Las Vegas Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith. With chapters based at each of the tracks that Smith owns, SCC is a clearinghouse that distributes money to numerous groups that help children in need with education, health care, food and fun. “Last year we awarded about $250,000 to 50 local charities,” says Little. “We really try to share the wealth with those who need it most. Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada volunteer of the year Kady Casullo describes her work with the organization as an addiction. Routh-Silberman sees similarities between Mount Charleston and the tony ski destination of Aspen, Colorado, which also brings in summer visitors who crave a temperate climate. “Just like you see with the beautiful estates in Aspen, where people love the ability to ski in the winter, it turns out they’re also in demand in the summer,” she says. Compared with ski communities like Aspen, Big Bear, or Lake Tahoe, however, Mount Charleston feels rural and under-

developed, and that’s the point. You have Vegas with its glitz and functional commerce a leisurely drive away, but you come to Mount Charleston to enjoy the air and feel at peace. “It’s like flipping a switch, transporting to another world or environment in as long as it takes to get out of most towns,” says Garry Tomashowski of Mt. Charleston Realty (mtcharlestonrealty.com). “The natural environment is what we’re all drawn to. If you have a home in Vegas

and a house here, it’s like a second full-time home because it’s so user-friendly. You can wake up and say, ‘Honey, I want to go to the cabin tonight,’ and then go to work the next morning.” Despite the proximity to Vegas, Mount Charleston “truly is a small market,” Tomashowski adds. “It’s not subject to the Las Vegas market.” There are about 400 homes in the community and maybe 25 to 30 on the market at any given time, says Tomashowski, whose recent listings include the

1,800-square-foot, $489,000 chalet at 4137 Matterhorn Way and a 4,439-square-foot, $999,000 stunner at 253 Ski Trail Road. “Mount Charleston is a small bedroom community.” Tomashowski says. “Sure, you don’t have a 7-Eleven down the street. But we’re selling for the purity of the experience and letting Vegas take care of the other needs. It’s a passion-driven market,” And this is 2016, so you can choose the level of isolation you want. Bristlecone Heights, for

instance, is billed as “off-thegrid,” but it has DirecTV, Wi-Fi, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, and “all of the typical features that might be in homes in the Ridges,” says Jordan, who often heads to Vegas for the day and sees friends before heading home to his retreat in the evening. He’s got adjacent land that’s “already set up for a heliport,” which could be a big selling point for a high-flying buyer. But he might also just keep that parcel and build another home on the range.

It’s not easy staying fresh in Las Vegas. But for the 16-year-old House of Blues Foundation Room, the dining and nightclub experience that feels like an artifact-packed eccentric world traveler’s sanctuary, rethinking the space has nothing to do with rebranding, says Victor Sutter, the Foundation Room’s VP. Instead, the space—which still caters to Foundation members, but is also now

open to the public—has gotten a refresh that stays true to its character. “We’re trying to focus your eye a little bit more,” says Sutter. “Before, you could miss so much of what’s happening when you walked into the rooms.” To that end, many of the antique Persian rugs have come out in favor of rustic wood floors. The Prayer Rooms— opulent private spaces with

actual fixtures from Hindu temple wagons—now open to the lounge (you can still close heavy curtains for privacy). A long dormant fireplace façade is now the decorative front for the DJ booth. And ancient Buddhas, Hindu deities, and Gothic art collected by House of Blues and Music Forward charity founder Isaac Tigrett are front-andcenter in each room, such as an LED-enhanced

balsam wood statue of Rama Seetha. “We’ve added elements that have a more modern aesthetic,” adds Sutter. Look for the midcentury chandelier from the demolished Sahara hotel, for instance. Betting on election outcomes isn’t quite legal in Las Vegas, but colorful commentary most certainly is. That’s lucky for Downtown artist Diane Bush (no relation to the former first family), who in honor of this campaign season has put together “Dishing It Out,” a series of socially engaging art events to rock, schlock, and

mock the vote. “Over the last 10 months we’ve gathered together political art from around the country,” explains Bush. She invited artists across the nation to create satirical work, in any medium, representing any of the 16 major party candidates who have made this election season oh, so memorable.

And for the next event in this series, the family-friendly “Let America Break Again” (on October 19, at the Arts Factory, coinciding with the final presidential debate, at UNLV), some of those pieces of art have been turned into commemorative gold-trimmed art plates, which attendees will be invited to smash. Remaining

shards will be made into a community mosaic. “It’s a patriotic art carnival where the public can smash plates, in a campy atmosphere,” says Bush. There will also be live entertainment, pictures with Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty, jugglers, and face painting, of course. The whole series wraps up on election night (at the Victor

Xiu Gallery inside Art Square) with “Final Tally.” Gallery walls, says Bush, “will show new work, and I will project works from throughout the year outside the gallery.” Election results will also be projected, and, if you’ve got the stomach for it, parked right outside will be—what else?—taco trucks. dianebush.net
