Mark Connolly

Bryn kenny

Brian klutCh

Daniela FeDeriCi

Born in Liverpool, England, Mark Connolly graduated from Saint Martin’s School of Art and went on to work as the fashion director of Cosmopolitan UK and the founding fashion director of British GQ. He moved to New York and served as style director at Condé Nast Traveler for 20 years. Connolly styled the mod looks in this issue’s “Haute Attitude” fashion feature. What was your inspiration for the looks in “Haute Attitude”? My inspiration was in the title! I loved the idea that women of all ages can challenge the rigid fashion rules laid down for them in “age appropriate” stories in other magazines. Which looks are your favorites? I loved the reinvention of the sexy slip dress from Agent Provocateur. By pairing it with a turtleneck and flat shoes, it feels very current, hip, and has a contemporary sexiness. The second look—a demure little black dress with a killer bright-yellow suede hip bone–high boot from Fendi—allows a woman to go from sedate to siren with just a pull on the zipper.

Bryn Kenny began her career as an editor and writer at WWD and W magazine and served as public relations director for Dior Beauty. In 2013, she founded her own consulting firm, Bryn Kenny Creative, and currently represents a select list of beauty and lifestyle brands. In “So Dior,” Kenny walks us through The Mall at Short Hills’ newly expanded Dior boutique and shows us the must-have accessories for fall. How would you describe your personal style? I always go back to a combination of bohemian and punk influences. There’s a bit of tomboy in there, too. In my opinion, the best fashion is the kind that breathes and moves with you. What does Dior represent to you? Paris! Unabashed glamour, fantasy, and a very ladylike approach to dressing. It’s steeped in history, but there’s also a bit of an out-ofthis-world edge.

New York-based photographer Brian Klutch captures stunning still-life images of everything from fine jewelry to food for designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Givenchy and publications including Forbes and The New York Times. For this issue, Klutch photographed gorgeous baubles from Bulgari and the season’s most striking colored gems. What was it like shooting “Force of Nature”? The biggest challenge was finding a succulent that really worked with the style of the jewelry. Our stylist, Sergio Esteves, did an amazing job sourcing props for us. The Bulgari pieces were stunning as usual and a lot of fun to work with. What do you love most about what you do? I love collaborating with creative people. I also love problem solving and making the ordinary extraordinary. My career allows me to explore new ways to create each and every day. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Photographer Daniela Federici’s international career was launched when she collaborated with Paul Marciano on Guess’s famous Anna Nicole Smith campaign in the early ’90s. Her images have appeared in GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and many other publications. A sought-after film director and author as well, Federici shot this issue’s “Haute Attitude” fashion feature. What were you hoping to capture in your photographs for “Haute Attitude”? We wanted to show that elegance and style come in many forms. What do you love about fashion photography? I love the creative process of visualizing the idea and lighting to create the desired atmosphere. We can create any world. I shot a Mad Max– inspired shoot in the desert the day before!

Fit For a princess From the collection of princess Diana to The Mall at short Hills, christian Dior’s classic Lady Dior bag transcends time and place. by Lisa Ferrandino Since itS firSt haute couture show in 1947, the house of Dior has been a sartorial favorite of the elite, including royalty such as Diana, Princess of Wales, who received what is now known as the Lady Dior bag as a gift in 1995. Dior, as well as the recognizable quilted cannage pattern inspired by Christian Dior’s favorite chairs, its size and embellishments set it apart. Plus, each bag comes with a collection of pins that highlight some of the codes of the house, such as the bee, rose, lily-of-the-valley, and the star, and which you can position to create your own one-of-akind design. Still, as Dior readies to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first collection, style mavens will be focused on what earned the house its place in fashion history. And the Lady Dior, since launching in 1995, has remained one of the brand’s most covetable items, with each one made up of 130 carefully selected pieces and taking up to eight hours to complete. Named for Princess Diana as a nod to her great affection for the structured bag, it was originally referred to as the “Chouchou,” or “favorite.” After Diana was photographed carrying it at several events, Dior went on to sell approximately 200,000 of the design in two years. For now, Dior is mum on specific plans for the 70th-anniversary celebration in 2017, but fans can start swooning in the new Short Hills boutique. The coming season is already a ceremonious tribute to the eternal chic of Dior. Look for echoes of the sensational feminine silhouettes shown at the very beginning of the brand, when Christian Dior presented his revolutionary, waist-cinching Bar suit. They’ll turn as many heads now as they did at his first show in 1947. Vive Dior! Dior, 973-379-2287 n

Named for the French novelist famous for her romantic liaisons, Colette from Tocca (Sephora, 973-258-1919) is a spicy, sweet, seductive scent. Rain Day by Derek Lam 10 Crosby (Sephora, 973-2581919) fuses tropical vetiver from Haiti and citrusy neroli from Tunisia to evoke the feeling of a summer downpour in Soho. Jo Malone London’s Basil & Neroli cologne (Neiman Marcus, 973-912-0080) seamlessly blends two seemingly conflicting notes. From Prada, Les Infusions de Prada Mimosa (Prada, 973-921-4780) is a stunning ode to the mimosa flower by award-winning German perfumer Daniela Andrier. Created in 1978, the eau de toilette Bluebell from Penhaligon’s (Penhaligon’s, 973-315-9615) emulates the unique smell of English bluebell forests; as Princess Diana’s favorite fragrance, it remains one of the brand’s most popular.

Amber, basil, lemon, patchouli... our longing for seemingly simple scents and apothecary-style blends is driving a new category of individualized fragrance—and a return to the classics. by Vishaka Robinson photography and styling by David Lewis Taylor GuessinG the fraGrance worn by a new acquaintance used to be pretty straightforward. for those familiar with high-end perfumes, a quick whiff was all it took to tell a coco Mademoiselle from an opium or the lightweight acqua Di Gio from the earthy terre d’hermès. that’s because the options were fairly limited, with a fragrance chosen because it seemed intoxicating on a friend or seductive in a glossy magazine ad. today, however, selecting a scent is much different. “we see the prestige shopper migrating to bespoke and niche fragrances because they simply don’t

want to smell like anyone else,” says Lisa wilson, founder of scent & strategy, a fragrance consulting firm that has worked with such brands as apothia at fred segal, Missoni home, and Pottery Barn. “that’s why the indie perfume and niche fragrance market is so hot. [consumers] want to discover fragrances for themselves—cutting-edge perfumers, unusual ingredients, and the stories behind the fragrance.” the market research firm Mintel hailed 2015 as “the year of niche perfumery” in part because the big fragrance houses, sensing this new independent mood, have

been snapping up small artisanal brands. (Estée Lauder, for example, now owns Byredo, born in Sweden, and Le Labo, the New Yorkbased company that names its scents for how many notes are in each.) The number of niche fragrance brands has more than tripled since 2004. And the trend is growing, thanks to our collective longing for what we think of as natural, uncomplicated, and authentic, and our craving for a scent that’s purely and simply “me.” It’s no longer chic to wear a fragrance based on who appears in the ad, no matter how prestigious the brand. Today, we proclaim our identity with a scent we connect with viscerally, one that speaks to our unique memories and dreams. And then there’s our greater appreciation for what constitutes a quality

fragrance. The rise of dedicated fragrance shops such as Penhaligon’s, Jo Malone London, and Diptyque goes hand-in-hand with a more rigorous shopping experience, in which scrutinizing accords and top notes is at least as important as finding ingredients that make you swoon. Shoppers may follow a renegade new brand on Instagram (where #perfume has been tagged more than 4 million times) or do some online research before deciding to spend several hundred dollars on a new addition to their collection. The $295 price tag on Jo Malone London’s new Rare Teas line, for example, may seem a little steep until you discover the level of craftsmanship behind it. To create the oolong scent, for instance, tea leaves are left to wither on bamboo racks in the sun before being oxidized for 15

hours and infused for another 68 hours until they develop just the right woody notes required by master perfumer Serge Majoullier. The new trend has also been a boon for timehonored fragrance houses like Creed, Guerlain, Hermès, and Dior, which have rich archives to sift through and revisit. Expect them to revive more and more of their classics, such as Dior’s Sauvage for Men, which debuted in 1966 and has now returned with bracing top notes of grapefruit, tangerine, and bergamot. “The fragrance industry has really shifted back to its historical roots, founded upon artists and rare and precious ingredients blended to create truly special concoctions,” says Kelly St. John, vice president for beauty at Neiman Marcus. She lists

Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Creed, Memo Fragrances, YSL Le Vestiaire, and The Fragrance Kitchen as brands to seek out. “This fall we’re excited to introduce over 20 fragrance exclusives.” There has also been a profusion of irresistible limited-edition spin-offs, such as Tom Ford’s Orchid Soleil, a summery version of Black Orchid featuring bitter orange, red spider lily, tuberose, vanilla, patchouli, and orchid, says Wilson. Increasingly, discerning customers are willing to put in the legwork to discover scents that truly reflect their style, slowly building a complete fragrance wardrobe. These are the shoppers that Robert Graham cofounder Robert Stock had in mind for his trio of new colognes. “We instilled our Blended Essence collection with the same amount of design and development attention as our limited-edition shirts,” he says. Each $295 bottle is created using a singleblending process, inspired by the one employed to distill fine spirits, and features ingredients such as Vodka Citron and guaiac wood in a weighty decanter. There has never been a better time to buy a standout scent. The only rule is that it should be yours—and yours alone. n above, from left: One of the first scents to prize ingredients over image, Tom Ford’s Black Orchid (Neiman Marcus, 973-9120080) is a knockout mix of black truffle, bergamot, and blackcurrant.

Robert Graham Courage (Robert Graham, 973-258-0500) is a hit of sultry vodka and bergamot. You might not expect a rhubarb cologne from one of France’s oldest luxury houses, but Hermès’s Eau de Rhubarbe Écarlate (Hermès, 973-376-6843) perfectly integrates the headlining citrusy key note with white earthy musk.

Hidden Note Penhaligon’s at The Mall at Short Hills offers a private lounge for custom-designing your own signature scent. The British perfumer Penhaligon’s has been crafting fragrances for over 140 years (its founder, William Penhaligon, was the court barber to Queen Victoria). But the brand has come a long way since opening its first tiny store in London’s Mayfair. While its more than 40 scents (each with its own backstory) have remained relatively unchanged for decades— like the ebulliently green and soapy fresh English Fern, a clover-laced mix of lavender and geranium that debuted in 1910— visitors to its boutique at The Mall at Short Hills can now book a beautiful private profiling room where they will be paired with an existing fragrance from the brand’s collection based on their preferences. It’s the ultimate luxury spot to turn shopping for a fragrance into a special occasion. Penhaligon’s, 973-315-9615 The handiwork of master perfumer Olivier Cresp, the new Equinox Bloom from Penhaligon’s combines Chantilly, frangipani violet leaves, and jasmine sambac, while an amped-up version of the original Endymion, Endymion Concentré, is the ultimate gent cologne.

Designer news

In a celebration of femininity, The Mall at Short hills introduces Boss hugo Boss’s Fall/Winter 2016 womenswear collection. here, Artistic Director Jason Wu gives an exclusive preview of the brand’s new “curvy” designs. by Jill Sieracki “What I do Is Inherently very femInIne: there’s always sex appeal, and there is also always a sense of confidence. that’s vital,” says designer Jason Wu, who became an overnight fashion legend at 26 when his white silk chiffon gown was chosen by michelle obama for the inaugural ball eight years ago. now, as artistic director of German brand Boss hugo Boss, Wu’s newest line of womenswear takes inspiration from the company’s history of structural designs, then adds a welcome softness and femininity in the form of hand-cut fil coupé velvet floral details or hand-frayed strips of chiffon on pieces such as midi-length dresses. says Wu, “the new Boss womenswear collection is about powerful, confident, sexy clothes. those ideas are really what Boss stands for— and has always represented.” Prior to designing the latest collection, Wu traveled to the company headquarters in metzingen, Germany, and found himself drawn to the contrast between the building’s glass-and-steel architecture and the rolling German landscape. that play on “something strict and formal meeting something soft and gentle” can be seen throughout Wu’s fall/ Winter 2016 collection. Peplum-esque tops, overcoats, kneelength skirts, and women’s suiting—which speaks to Boss’s extensive history of masculine tailoring—are bound to be a hit with Boss loyalists. yet the addition of feminine touches like a head-to-toe drape or contrasting fabrics (such as leather and suede with crepe, mesh, satin, or felt) will tempt new customers in the market for pieces that fit and flatter a curvy physique. the color palette, too, unites masculine and feminine: Black, olive, and ocher share the runway with hot pinks and cinnamons. “my aim is to build a strong new contemporary identity for Boss womenswear,” says Wu. “Beauty is confidence, femininity, and sexiness. If you have all those elements in yourself and in your clothing, you’ll always be beautiful.” Boss Hugo Boss, 973-379-7779 n

In Her Jeans Beloved for its unique, playful style, Madewell moves into a larger space at The Mall at short Hills. now, Creative Director Joyce Lee shares what’s new for fall and how the brand is turning your denim obsession “into a force for good.” by Jennifer DeMeritt “Denim is at the core of everything we Do,” says Joyce Lee, creative director of madewell, the stylish reincarnation of a rugged workwear brand founded in new Bedford, massachusetts, in 1937. since then, denim has grown up, evolving from a utilitarian fabric into a wardrobe staple, and the brand, which was relaunched by J.crew in 2006, has grown up, too, boasting steady expansion and strong profits that outpace those of its parent company. at the mall at short hills, madewell has moved into a larger space to meet the everincreasing demand for its tomboy-chic apparel. Lee, too, is moving up the ranks, having taken the reins as fashion director last fall after seven years as head of accessories. as creative director, she is bringing a more feminine touch to madewell’s fall 2016 collection and reinforcing the brand’s commitment to recycling with the Blue Jeans go green program. each season, Lee says, “we focus on newness in denim silhouettes, details, and washes. then we build the collection around what the madewell woman will wear with these pieces, always keeping in mind versatility and what feels fresh.” this fall, shoppers will find looks inspired by the ’70s. “in denim, it manifests as cropped flares and higher rises,” says Lee.

“Madewell appeals to a woman who wants her wardrobe to be stylish but functional.” —joyce lee

she joined Madewell. As creative director, she is taking over for Somsack Sikhounmuong (who left the brand to become head of women’s design for J.Crew) and is confident in her vision for Madewell: “I would like to think that my signature is bringing a bit of femininity to what we have to offer.” Lee is also excited about Madewell’s denim recycling program, a partnership with Blue Jeans Go Green, which she describes as “a way for our customers to turn their denim obsession into a force for good.” Customers can donate their old denim apparel—men’s, women’s, or children’s, from any brand—and receive a $20 discount on a new pair of Madewell jeans. The used denim is donated to the nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity, which recycles it into insulation for housing projects. Since 2014, more than 70,000 pairs of jeans have been recycled through Madewell’s alliance with Blue Jeans Go Green, insulating more than 70 homes. Lee says that partnering with the nonprofit was an easy decision: “As a denim brand, it was a no-brainer. We feel that Blue Jeans Go Green is a step in the right direction to promote recycling of materials.” Madewell, 973-379-3657 n

Generation Generosity these boutiques at the Mall at short Hills help you do good while looking good. Madewell’s denim recycling program is part of a larger movement, fueled by idealistic millennials who seek out companies that support important causes like protecting the environment, promoting health, and fighting poverty. a recent finger on the Pulse study by Horizon Media showed that 81 percent of millennials expect companies to commit to good corporate citizenship, which is why more fashion brands are joining the movement and launching philanthropic programs that engage their customers’ generosity—and their sense of style. Aritzia helps animal lovers get glam with its cruelty-free vegan suede collection. The brand’s boutique at The Mall at Short Hills also carries clothing made from recycled materials and eco-friendly fibers like modal, a softer, silkier alternative to rayon derived from beech trees, which releases fewer harmful chemicals into the environment when it’s manufactured. Aritzia, 973-376-0998 Kiehl’s is showing its commitment to the environment with its Recycle and Be Rewarded program. Customers can bring their empty Kiehl’s bottles and tubes to the boutique, which tracks the donations. The 10th empty bottle earns you a free product from the Official Kiehl’s Travel Collection. Since 2009, the program has recycled more than 3 million bottles. Kiehl’s Since 1851, 973-258-0790

The line’s flared, high-waist jeans and trousers in wool or khaki recall the easygoing vibe of the ’70s, while the above-the-ankle hem keeps the look modern and tidy. Pair them with clogs that sport just enough fringe and a subtly tapered wood platform that’s chunky, not clunky. “For the rest of the line, we played with texture by layering on suede, shearling, velvet, and corduroy,” says Lee. Look for details like flirty lacing on a rugged windowpane-print top, or a retro shearling collar atop a wool capelet. The ’70s motif is a subtle shift that stays true to Madewell’s DNA, which has always favored a heritage feel and an effortless aesthetic, rendered in natural fabrics with a buttery-soft touch. “Madewell appeals to a woman who wants her wardrobe to be stylish but functional,” Lee says. “She loves pieces that she can rely on and wear many different ways.” This summer the brand unveiled one piece of denim each day for 24 consecutive days following the launch of the Fall collection; the project introduced items created in collaboration with Goop, Vans, and ABC Home. With a background that includes studying textiles at the University of California at Davis, followed by accessories at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Lee got her start designing accessories at Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors before

Bulgari draws on its unique heritage for the newest bedazzling Serpenti collection. by Lisa Ferrandino photography by Brian Klutch

Founded in Rome in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, Bulgari has since grown into a luxe italian maison revered for its opulent pieces, such as the bejeweled Serpenti collection. in its most recent incarnation, the Serpenti collection draws on its roots in contemporary and modern design. These latest adornments focus on the eyes of the serpent: Bulgari gives a nod to the classic idiom “The eyes are the window to the soul” by placing significant gemstones like emeralds and rubellites with diamonds in this distinguished spot. For a modern look sure to captivate its wearer and enchant admirers, look no further than the Serpenti earrings in 18k pink gold with rubellite eyes and a pavé diamond head or the breathtaking Serpenti necklace in 18k white gold with emerald eyes and full pavé-set diamonds (shown). SHINE YOUR LIGHT From glistening blends of burgundy and amber to spots of gold and silver, eyelids are sparkling on fall faces. by Christina Clemente NEW YORK. LONDON. MILAN. Color-saturated sparkling lids were en vogue at the fall fashion shows. And for top makeup artists, the trend was anything but random. “With the low-maintenance looks that are present on the runways, there is a need to make a statement [with beauty],” says Janell Geason, global artistic director for makeup at Aveda, who created a stunning glistening ombré effect using several rich autumnal shades at the Leanne Marshall fall/winter show. “Metallic or glittery eyes create a show-stopping moment.” Show-stopping, yes. And grown-up, too. Although Wendy Rowe showered glitter dots on outer eye corners and cheekbones for Burberry, sparkle at most shows took a more subtle approach. used MAC cream and powder shadows to create intense but day-appropriate sparkle. At Tommy Hilfiger, models Gigi Hadid and Taylor Hill wafted down the runway in softly hued chiffons, ’40s dresses, and wide, billowy pants, as specks of golden glitter shone beneath their brows, a look created by legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath. And at Jenny Packham, Bobbi Brown gave models’ lids a liberal dusting of shimmering gold powder using shadows from her eponymous line. To get the look, Janell Geason suggests keeping the face natural with a soft lip. For day eyes, “draw a metallic line on the top lash line as a liner.” But when the sun goes down, “feel free to be more bold and let your ’70s disco queen out.” Aveda, 973-467-4500 ■

S i ng l e minded One exquisite pen, one divine objet, one incredible watch… Sometimes, nothing else is needed to make the ultimate powerful statement and demonstrate your perfect taste. by Christina Clemente photography by Chris stein

WORD OF HONOR Every inch of Montblanc’s Shakespeareinspired fountain pen reflects the legendary bard—from the octagonalshaped cap and 750 golden nib that pays tribute to the playwright’s beloved Globe Theatre in London to Shakespeare’s signature gold earring featured on the clip. It won’t necessarily transform you into a legendary scribe, but it’s a showstopper when you sign for dinner…
