Philly to Kensington. His @StreetsDept Instagram has garnered the attention of activists and street art aficionados alike, garnering 140,000 followers and social media collaborations with Urban Outfitters and Uber, among others. Benner launched the blog in 2011 as a freelance photojournalist

and, following instant success, eventually took on Streets Dept as his full-time gig. A fascination with graffiti has paved the way, he says. “This art form is so ephemeral. It could get removed or painted over five minutes after you leave it. I wanted to preserve it in some way,” he says. More

recently Benner has been using his online presence as a platform for change: Through a social media petition titled #SEPTA247, he advocated for better transportation options for late-night workers and helped secure 24-hour lines on Philly’s Frankford El and subway trains. Benner

also peddled the grantwinning venture Next Stop: Democracy, which employs artists to paint signs directing voters to polling locations. Streets Dept may have given Benner a voice for artists but it’s his voice that has prompted change. streetsdept.com

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

writing skills aside, this job

requires a certain mastery of the art of small talk. Earn a black belt in chitchat and you can steer straying interviews back on course, breeze through social functions on a gentle current of air kisses, and uncover the editorial gems that may not have made the press release. Lately, the state of Philadelphia has replaced tried-and-true conversation starters like too-busy workdays, exotic travel plans, and the positively yawn-inducing topic of weather. (It’s fall. It’s cold. Deal with it.) Men, in particular, seem to radiate a genuine sense of pride talking about the future of Philly, similar to how they might gush about their beloved hometown sports teams during a winning streak. A close friend of mine drives around Center City on the

weekends and inevitably calls to dish about some new building that’s materialized out of thin air. During a recent Mondaymorning meeting when my small-talk game was, well, very small, a prominent businessowner wondered aloud what the city would look like in five or 10 years. Excellent question. It feels like the future is now in Philly, not down the road. Many of the names featured in this edition, our annual Men’s Issue, are helping to shape the transformative years ahead, from Conrad Benner and his highly followed Streets Dept Instagram to Eagles tight end/restaurateur/ music label owner Brent Celek to J. Andrew Greenblatt of the star-studded Philadelphia Film Festival. Not to be outdone are Power Home Remodelers co-CEOs Asher Raphael and

Corey Schiller, who are using their booming home-improvement business to improve the lives of local millennials and young veterans. Throw in some of the city’s top doctors and the six men who paused to pose in this issue’s “Great Expectations” feature and share some of their personal insights on the topic of success, and the city’s future is so promising it’s not shining--it’s positively blinding. I hope you enjoy the issue. Cheers to chitchat!

our annual men’s issue is always a special one to me. This year, we are so pleased to feature the talented Leslie Odom Jr. on our cover. His career has skyrocketed thanks to his Tony Award-winning turn in Hamilton and, as a city, we couldn’t be more proud to call Odom one of our own. This issue features a very candid interview with not only the Philly native, but also with some of the most influential men in Philly from across all manner of professions. In addition, our Health and Wellness feature is back, with Dr. Nina Radcliff discussing men’s health issues with the region’s most respected doctors. With the change in season comes a continued revitalization of the city. Our iconic skyline is rapidly evolving. From my home, I can see many cranes from river to river, promising new and exciting things for our great city from apartments

and condos to amazing office buildings. Neighboring areas including South Jersey and the Main Line will also see major new developments in the coming months. This fall also brings a slew of philanthropic events to the city. The Philadelphia Film Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a 10-day event at the end of October with some marquee movies. Also in October is Abramson Cancer Center’s star-studded Philly Fights Cancer gala featuring Lionel Richie and Jennifer Hudson. The American Heart Association will host the 2016 Philadelphia Heart Walk at Citizens Bank Park in November. The list goes on for what’s shaping up to be another busy, charitable fall season. I hope you enjoy the issue.

Kristin Young

Brian Freedman

Fashion writer

Food and wine writer

Kristin Young has covered fashion for nearly two decades, writing for publications such as WWD, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times, and is the editor-in-chief of children’s fashion magazine Earnshaw’s. For Philadelphia Style, she interviewed designer Karl Lagerfeld for her coverage of Fendi’s 90th anniversary.

Brian Freedman is a wine, spirits, food, and travel writer, restaurant and beverage consultant, drinks educator, and event host and speaker. He contributes to JancisRobinson.com, Forbes.com, John Mariani’s Virtual Gourmet, and more.

What did you learn about Lagerfeld from this interview? “Across the board, the questions he refused to answer were what we in the journalism trade call ‘fluffy.’ In other words, Lagerfeld was all business. I found that interesting.” What have been your most memorable moments covering fashion? “Interviewing Miuccia Prada and Alexander McQueen. Prada was a true intellectual and McQueen was light and told jokes.”

Where is your favorite place in Philly for pizza? “There are so many great pizza destinations, but my favorite one by far is Pizzeria Freedman, where my daughters, sous-chef Sophie and sous-chef Olivia, turn out a delicious quick-rise dough and top it with enthusiasm and love.” What’s on your home menu for fall? “I recently purchased, with two friends, a 300-pound heritage Mangalitsa pig from the amazing Mosefund Farm in New Jersey. With all of that insanely delicious pork, I expect to be enjoying it well into 2017.”

Michael Persico

Dr. NiNa raDcliff

Photographer

Health writer

Michael Persico is a food and portrait photographer based in Philly who travels for work regularly. When he’s not working, he spends his time cooking, surfing, and riding his motorcycle.

Nina Radcliff, M.D. is a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and one of America’s leading medical health sources, contributing to weekly columns and national news health segments. She is devoted to helping people live healthier lives and gain understandings about health and wellness concerns.

What was your favorite part about shooting our men’s feature? “It was a group of incredibly interesting guys, passionate about their work (with more than a few stories about their path to success) in a gorgeous space that really feels like the classic Philadelphia we all dream of here in the city. It was really a pleasure.” What is your dream photo shoot? “The type of assignment that involves travel, immersion, exploration: How these people got here, what their path was, and the reason I’m there shooting them, their work, their food, or their space.”

What is the most important men’s healthcare tip you share in this issue? “Men’s health has unique aspects and many of the health risks that they face can be prevented, slowed down, or treated with screening and diagnosis. Philadelphia has world renowned medical health sources and it is crucial that men of all ages take preventative measures to get checkups, screenings, and the attention they deserve to proactively manage their health.”

ViVa Mexico!

One must-see piece at the Art Museum’s Mexican Modernism exhibit is Frida Kahlo’s 1932 Self Portrait On the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States.

Mexican Modernist works hit Philly for the first Major show of its kind in a generation. By Marni Prichard Manko

The Art Museum’s new “Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950” is the most comprehensive exhibition devoted to the subject in the US in more than 70 years. The museum’s permanent collection of Mexican art served as the inspiration—

some pieces are among the most important in the country—and together with works on loan from Mexico, visitors will be able to appreciate the country’s incredible contributions to modern art. According to curator Matthew Affron, the show touches on all aspects

of modern art in Mexico. “Though the mural painting tradition remains that country’s best-known contribution to modernism in the visual arts, it is part of a much broader story. Artists were innovating in every possible medium, including painting,

sculpture, printmaking, and photography. Their work cut across all classifications, from the epic to the lyric. Visitors to the exhibition will find many surprises.” Early post-Revolutionary artists like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro

Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo are on display, their works depicting a turbulent and creative time in Mexican history. This landmark exhibition, running October 25 through January 8, 2017, is exclusive to the Art Museum in the US. philamuseum.org

UPPER CRUST CHARTING THE CITY’S MOST SACRED SLICES, ONE THINCRUST MARGHERITA AT A TIME. BY BRIAN FREEDMAN

Philadelphia has gone from playing second fiddle to the epic pizzas of New York to a starring role as one of America’s great destinations for a memorable pie, thanks to the restaurateurs and pizza fanatics who have raised the city’s carb game in seemingly no time at all. Here, the best pie picks for everyone, no matter what the neighborhood, no matter what the topping.

RESTAURATEURS AND PIZZA FANATICS HAVE RAISED THE CITY’S CARB GAME IN SEEMINGLY NO TIME AT ALL.

Of course Old City’s Capofitto was always going to be great: It’s the brainchild of Stephanie Reitano, the same genius who brought our city Capogiro, which boasts some of the best gelato this side of the Atlantic. Capofitto’s pizzas stand out as a result of the same level of attention to detail, with airy crusts so well-developed that they act like an additional topping themselves. Start with some Italian charcuterie, tuck into a margherita, and wash it all down with an Italian beer. And yes, save room for gelato! 233 Chestnut St., 215-897-9999; capofittoforno.com BRING THE HEAT

Pizzeria Stella is a perfect slice of Italy right on Headhouse Square. The result of extensive

on-the-road research by Team Starr, the menu is memorable not just for the namesake pizza, but also for the dishes you’ll eat over the course of the meal. Start with beguilingly tender grilled octopus with salsa verde, fork some garlicky broccoli rabe, and then dive into the pies. Tartufo, with egg, Fontina, and black truffle, is a decidedly decadent offering. ’Nduja, with Calabrian sausage, smoked mozzarella, and

red pepper, is a bracing beauty. The 11 more to choose from, all executed beautifully by head chef Shane Solomon, guarantee that you’ll be back. 420 S. Second St., 215-320-8000; pizzeriastella.net secRet sauce

Don’t let the notes on Pizzeria Beddia’s website scare you off—no phone, cash only, just 40 pies each night it’s open—because the pizza at this Fishtown address is first rate. And

while the pies aren’t cheap, they’re more than worth it. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic made with mozzarella, tomato, and olive oil, or something a bit more exotic, like an asparagus offering punched up with mushrooms, ramps (when in season), and cream, Beddia—and chef-owner-pizzaioloextraordinaire Joe Beddia—is the real deal. 115 E. Explore farmers markets. “My favorite is in Headhouse Square, the oldest open air market in town. There are some beautiful seasonal blooms there, so bonus points if you buy your date some.” Take a walk. “This year

Army of Two Asher Raphael and Corey Schiller are helping millennial veterans achieve the American dream right here in Philly. By Kristin Detterline

By now you may have heard the unlikely success story about Power Home Remodeling, the Chesterbased home improvement business that’s been racking up national attention (Fortune’s Best 100 Companies to Work for in the US) for its forwardthinking, millennialminded approach to the modern workplace. Forget flexible dress codes: Power puts on more than 200 events a year for its nearly 2,000 employees, from women’s summits hosted by soccer star Brandi Chastain to company retreats to Mexico with performances by Flo Rida. Power’s Asher Raphael and Corey Schiller, college buddies who worked their way up from entry level to co-CEOs over roughly a decade, wouldn’t have it any other way. “These experiences bring

leadership concepts to everyone, not just a select few,” says Schiller. Next up—besides opening a 12th office, in Denver, and cutting the ribbon on a new headquarters in January—is hiring hundreds of veterans through their new Power Veterans Initiative. “We aren’t doing this out of charity,” says Raphael. “They are the best fit for this job: hard-working, mission-driven, and natural leaders.” Power is also the title sponsor of November’s Triumph Games, a national competition series with veteran athletes airing on CBS in November. “Post-9/11 veterans have been serving in a war that’s lasted longer than World Wars I and II combined,” says Raphael. “We want them to enjoy the American dream when they return home.” powerhrg.com

ALL THE WORLD’S A FAIR Sweet Basel: Last year’s fair included artwork from Alighiero Boetti (HERE), Paul McCarthy (RIGHT), and Alexander Calder and Frank Stella (BOTTOM LEFT, FROM FOREGROUND).

The 2015 fair included a Pope.L performance (ABOVE LEFT) and film screenings (ABOVE)—not to mention gallery-going galore.

As it moves into its middle teens, blue chip art fair Art Basel Miami Beach’s position in the global art world has never been higher. “Every show is marked by the high quality of galleries participating,” says Art Basel’s Director Americas, Noah Horowitz. “However, this year also affords an opportunity to look back at the show’s past 15 years and its tremendous impact on Miami and international engagement with the art scenes across the Americas.” Beginning with by-invitation-only VIP events on November 30—which bring out major-league collectors—and opening to the public on December 1, ABMB will bring together 270 galleries from 30 countries. The five-day fest also anticipates more than 77,000 visitors, including the usual boldfaced names (with bank accounts to match), such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. As the fair has grown so has its distinct sectors, which currently include Galleries, Nova, Positions, Survey, Edition, Film, Kabinett, and Public, featuring outdoor installations and larger-scale works. In addition to world-famous galleries like Gagosian and Marian Goodman, ABMB also welcomes 22 first-time exhibitors. “We have some very exciting galleries participating in the Miami Beach show for the first time,” says Horowitz, “from Gaga Fine Arts in Mexico and Leo Xu Projects in China to Galerie Greta Meert in Belgium and Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M in Italy, [as well as] Di Donna and Callicoon Fine Arts in New York and Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Various Small Fires in Los Angeles.” Better together—and in Miami! Scene CHEERS!

sugar and spice Sip, don’t Shoot! the new batch of tequilaS growS up.

The age of añejo: As master distillers begin aging tequila longer, the rise of extra-añejos is placing Mexico’s national spirit on the top shelf among whiskeys and Cognacs— and in rocks glasses as straight-nochaser sippers.

76  phillystylemag.com

It’s no secret that spirits aficionados have long reached for premium whiskeys and Cognacs, but high-end labels are responding to rising demand for sip-worthy tequilas with astonishing depth and flavor. From artisanal new-crop distilleries to world-famous brands, master distillers have begun barrel-aging the blue agave–based spirit for years, allowing the wood to layer rich notes of vanilla and caramel atop agave’s natural spice. But what

exactly makes for a sipping tequila? “First and foremost it cannot be fiery,” explains Tad Carducci, bar consultant and author of A Lime and a Shaker: Discovering Mexican-Inspired Cocktails. “But the tequila has to have an intensity of flavor, and it should offer a long, lingering finish.” Consider, for example, Dulce Vida Extra Añejo ($160 for 750 ml), aged for five years in former Napa Valley red wine barrels, which impart juicy, round, fruity notes. Meanwhile,

Herradura Selección Suprema Extra Añejo ($350) offers soft, Cognaclike flavors of stone fruit and hazelnut. And Gran Patrón Piedra ($400), the luxury brand’s first-ever extra-añejo, is a silky, rounded sipper with plenty of caramel and spice. Interest in premium tequilas is on the rise, says Chantal Martineau, tequila expert and author of How the Gringos Stole Tequila: The Modern Age of Mexico’s Most Traditional Spirit. Thanks in part to celeb-backed

brands, “people are associating tequila with sophistication and style.” Furthering that association, she says, is the the evolution of Mexican cuisine from street fare into more sophisticated dining. While these selections are delicious on their own, is it okay to mix a high-end tequila into a cocktail? “Of course!” Martineau affirms. Skip the prickly pear margaritas, she suggests, and “make a stirred, spiritforward cocktail that really lets the tequila shine.”

VIVA ROMA! COUTURE KAISER ARL LAGERFELD MARSHALS THE ITALIAN CAPITAL’S HIGH FASHION TEMPLE INTO ITS TENTH DECADE.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY VENTURELLI/WIREIMAGE (MODELS, JENNER); VICTOR VIRGILE/GAMMA-RAPHO VIA GETTY IMAGES (STATUE, LAGERFELD); SKETCH (COURTESY OF FENDI)

BY KRISTIN YOUNG

“Fendi is Italian to its core,” says longtime creative director Karl Lagerfeld. “It’s not only Italian, it’s Roman.” The wonderfully prolific Lagerfeld, who has been at the helm of Fendi for longer than many of us have been alive— since 1965—claims it’s easy to differentiate the Italian collection from those of Chanel and his namesake label, the other two fashion houses under his direction. “I don’t have one personality, I have three,” the designer muses. “Fendi is my Italian version, Chanel my French version, and Lagerfeld is my own version. I never made something that looked like Chanel at Fendi and never made something that looked like Fendi at Chanel, because both have a [separate] identity.” There is perhaps no greater tribute to Fendi’s quintessential romanità than the staging of its 90th anniversary fashion show upon Rome’s Trevi fountain in July. Models literally walked on water—an illusion created by a clear platform placed over the newly-restored fountain and pool—revealing a collection inspired by illustrations of legends and fairy tales. “Very romantic, but modern at the same time,” says Lagerfeld of the collection, which comprised romantic, flowing dresses, many with

Botticelli-esque empire waists; white lace dresses buried in appliquéd flowers; and lavish fabrications such as lush layers of tulle and velvet—pieces that look like they hail from the enchanted forest. Part and parcel of the 90th-anniversary collection, Fendi has released a limitededition Selleria Peekaboo handbag, a one-of-a-kind accessory made entirely by hand in 60 pieces. The bag features punto baseball, or baseball stitching, a larger-form stitching technique handed down through the generations by Roman master saddlers. The Peekaboo bags are exclusively sold at the Palazzo Fendi boutique in Rome. And if you happen to be in the Italian capital, head to the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, where you will find “Fendi Roma: The Artisans of Dreams” (through October 29), an exhibition that celebrates the maison’s nine decades of craftsmanship and creativity. For those who can’t make it to Rome, the short film Fendi: Hands Make Beauty (viewable online) highlights the brand’s evolution, and the coffee-table book Fendi Roma, a recent release from Assouline, explores Fendi’s connection with the Eternal City. Lagerfeld, now 83, says he’s still brimming with ideas and is given the freedom to create what he wants at Fendi. So expect plenty more from Italian Karl in years to come. It’s not work, he insists. “Work is when a person wakes up every morning and goes to do something they don’t like,” he says. “I have the chance of doing something I love and doing it [in] the best conditions... I’m interested in a lot of things, even more today than before. I like to change while the world is changing. That’s what fashion is all about!” The Mall at Short Hills, 973-564-5780; fendi.com

IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ATHLETES AND CELEBRITIES ARE FANS OF THIS FROZEN FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH.

Athletes are fans of the Cryosauna for sports injuries.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL EDWARDS (CRYOSAUNA); GETTY IMAGES (BACKGROUND)

Stepping into the narrow, shoulder-high Cryosauna chamber at Orange Cryo Wellness with nothing more than a bikini and a special pair of gloves and socks on, you wonder how you’ll survive the -250 Fahrenheit nitrogen chill for three long minutes. The time goes much faster if you focus on the health perks enumerated by the specialist who monitors the treatment: reduced pain and inflammation, weight loss (a single session can burn up to 800 calories!), and overall moodboosting courtesy of constricted blood vessels from the extreme cold. It’s no surprise, then, that the world’s most famous athletes and celebrities—LeBron James, Usain Bolt, and Jennifer Aniston, to name a few—are fans of this frozen fountain of youth. Orange Cryo owner and Philly resident Robin Gupta discovered cryotherapy during a motivational seminar with Tony Robbins (also a fan) and decided to introduce the concept to his hometown. “I wanted to bring what the stars and elite athletes have had access to for maintaining their vitality and health to the general public,” says Gupta. After your full-body freeze, stick around for the six-minute Cryofacial to boost collagen production. Trust us, your body will recover quickly from the sub-zero blast, but a hot cup of tea right after isn’t a bad idea. 444 N. Fourth St., 267-5190028; orangecryo.com

DOOR TO DOOR E-TAILER BONOBOS GOES BRICK-AND-MORTAR IN PHILLY WITH A PAIR OF SHOPS STOCKED WITH FALL’S COOLEST LOOKS. BY LISA FERRANDINO

Call them stores if you must, but Bonobos prefers the term “Guideshops” (yes, with a capital “G”). The menswear brand, which doubled down on Philly retail with new locations on Walnut Street and the King of Prussia Mall, is bringing the ethos of its Web-based brand to fruition. “You come in and try on some clothes, have a beer, then walk out with no bags and get it to your door a day later,” explains Chief Creative Officer Dwight Fenton. Known for its cool, transitional essentials, Bonobos was founded on the idea of building a better pair of pants; today, the line includes outerwear, golf gear, and accessories. “This fall it’s all about focusing on a relaxed fit, but still maintaining that nice structure,” says Fenton. Styles that Fenton believes should be in every man’s closet include pieces like “pants with really narrow pleats and textured fabrics,” he says. “There’s also more variety within suiting, like color and heavier-weight blazers.” But don’t forget about brand favorites like the unstructured blazer—described by Fenton as “a style that removes all the guts from a blazer, making it more comfortable and breathable”— and the Mainline Topcoat. Your go-to seasonal looks are now served, gentlemen. 1519 Walnut St., 267-788-0231; King of Prussia Mall, 610-2655727; bonobos.com

STYLE PEOPLE Nina Farran steps out in one of her Fashionkind finds.

Some Kind of Wonderful Penn grad NiNa FarraN is giving socially conscious shoPPing a haute overhaul with her chic online boutique.

Philly native and Instagram fave Nina Farran founded the online boutique Fashionkind (fashion kind.com) with a mission to reveal the fashion industry’s power to support human rights and minimize environmental impact without sacrificing style. She travels the globe and hand-selects clothes, accessories, and home goods created by designers from 23 different countries— including Philly’s own MindaHome—who share her sentiment about ethical fashion. We talked to her about changing the world using luxury fashion as the vehicle. How FasHionkind was born:

“The summer after my freshman year at Penn I saw a T-shirt with a distinctive symbol on it: a hand forming a peace sign, with the palm in the shape of Africa. After learning it was made by a humanitarian fashion brand that built schools in sub-Saharan Africa,

I knew I had found my calling.” THe concepT:

Farran snaps pics of streetscapes that inspire her on her travels, like these plates, trays, and mirrors (above), and colorful rugs (here) in Marrakesh, and handmade baskets in Johannesburg (bottom).

“Fashionkind stands for fashion for humankind. It’s an initiative at the intersection of luxury, style, ethics, and sustainability; the intersection of education, design, and consumerism; and the intersection of e-commerce and activism. There’s a preconceived notion that ethical and sustainable fashion is anything but fashionable, but every single Fashionkind piece is proof that this couldn’t be further from the truth.” THe FasHionkind dinner series:

“It’s a series of suppers across the country (with the intention of expanding internationally) that’ll bring together a unique selection of individuals across industries who wouldn’t normally be at the same table, with the goal to promote ethics and sustainability in the luxury markets.”

MEN AT WORK LOOKING FOR THE LATEST MUST-HAVE MENSWEAR MERCH? LOOK NO FURTHER. BY CONNIE CAPONE

Whether a man’s style skews preppy-cool or laidback hipster, there’s something downright admirable about the gentleman who puts some thought into his wardrobe. That same attention to detail can be found in the many menswear labels that are springing up across Philadelphia, touting a level of craftsmanship that hasn’t been seen since the heyday of Philly’s manufacturing era, when iconic names like Stetson Hat thrived. Here, three menswear brands making their mark right here at home. NORMAN PORTER CO.

David Stampler started a custom denim line with his brother Michael on the tenets of chivalry and good old-fashioned hard work and named the label after their grandfather. 150 Cecil B. Moore Ave. #201; 267-908-4694; normanporter.com Describe your brand philosophy. “We’re a brand for men and women who appreciate dedication to craftsmanship and can have fun in the process. We value a good day’s work though we try not to take ourselves too seriously.” What makes your jeans special? “In each pair of denim that leaves our Fishtown shop, every detail has been planned and accounted for, from the choice of materials to the handhammered rivets,” says David. What’s new for fall? “We’ll be offering some variations in our jacket line and hosting new events in our showroom.”

C u r t a i n Hot off Hamilton’s Tony-winning raps, Philly’s Leslie Odom Jr. gets back to his performance roots as a solo jazz singer.

winner Leslie Odom Jr. left his post as the dueling, rapping rapTony scallion Aaron Burr in the Broadway sensation Hamilton in July. The nightly grind of putting on the 18th-century garb of pantaaward loons and ruffled shirts and shooting his pal, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, is over for the Philadelphia native. And its aftereffects are finally setting in. “It does take some getting used to,” Odom says while in Atlantic City recently, prepping for a concert at the Borgata. “Whether performing as him every day since we were Off Broadway in 2015 or thinking about him while we were in development three years ago, Burr has been the center of my creative life. It’s dreamlike.” Odom has successfully jumped out of one sizzling frying pan and into another. The handsome vocalist—a jazz and standards lover at heart—reached Number One on iTunes in June, just a week after the release of his eponymous debut album and mere days before his first major performance in his hometown, Wawa’s July 4 Welcome America party on the Parkway. Plus, Odom and the cast of Hamilton performed at the White House for the Obamas. “Yeah, there have been several ‘pinch me’ moments,” he says with a laugh of all of the “geek-out” and “fan boy” memories he has acquired since the success of Hamilton, which snagged a record-setting 16 Tony nominations and 11 statues, including, for Odom specifically, Best Actor in a Musical. “Did that all just really happen? Do I really have all these new friends?” With Hamilton now behind him, Odom is excited to return to his singing/songwriting—“we’re booked for the rest of the year, adding dates as we can, and it’s all about discovery”—the roots of which were cultivated on East Oak Lane, where his parents still live. “The funny thing about the hip-hop of Hamilton—channeling my inner Kendrick Lamar—is that that was the new stuff to me, the unfamiliar. Rap is not what I grew up with or grew up singing. So it took me a year to find the MC within me, my authentic voice. For the audience to buy it, I had to buy it. The music on my new album is songs that I grew up with.” Raised near Germantown’s Canaan Baptist Church, where he performed rich solos in the choir (“my voice just came out that way, better suited to gospel, jazz, and soul”), Odom says he always relied on local mentors and dutiful Philly friends to guide him through his life and his art. As a kid he was very much into spending time with his parents, reading books, and just goofing around. “Like most kids, I thought I was an outsider, the only one who sang in church and loved jazz. I also think I was incredibly average. I liked The Cosby Show and A Different World because they made going to college a thing. Do you know how many people thought Hillman College was real? Back then, though, I was not a good student with anything special about me.” Things changed at age 10, he says, when he truly discovered the arts: singing beyond the church, oratory. At Masterman School, his coach, Mrs. Frances Turner, identified a gift for speech-writing; later, a teenaged Odom would go on to deliver numerous presentations on the floor of City Council and the Pennsylvania state capitol. Tapping into this newfound talent gave Odom the confidence to explore drama at Freedom Theatre, Philly’s first all-African-American theater. It’s a time in his life that he still refers back to for inspiration, especially when he’s singing songs from his debut album. “Everything that I have ever been and ever sung is salt for the stew on this new album of mine,” he says, considering timeless classics like “Autumn Leaves,” rousing neospirituals such as “Look for the Silver Lining,” and even delicate new arrangements of tunes like “The Guilty Ones” from Broadway’s bawdy Spring Awakening. “My past, even the recent past, goes into every song I sing. I want the inspiration of all of my life—be it Canaan Baptist, the clown I was at my fifth birthday party, my glee at watching Michael Jackson, all the disappointment and joy—to be available to me.”

Parkway Corporation President Robert Zuritsky talks about his first job and the advantages of adversity. First Job: At eight years old, I used to clean up trash and direct traffic at Parkway parking lots. Words to Live By: Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated. Best Business Practices: Work hard, create solutions, have integrity, and enjoy what you do. Building Bridges: My father and grandfather showed me that one of the keys to success is the network of relationships you build throughout your career. My father expanded Parkway Corporation from a mom-and-pop company to a business that is a best-in-class parking operator and good-sized real estate developer with offices in nine markets including

Toronto. We have had over 40 joint venture relationships throughout our 87 years. Life Lessons: The Great Recession was a difficult time for everyone at Parkway. From that, I learned that it’s important to take risks, but it’s more important to be prepared for unexpected problems. Giving Back: My parents taught me that if you see a way to help, you try to help. Philly Favorites: Butcher & Singer, Parc, Independence Beer Garden, biking along Forbidden Drive. On My Nightstand: Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton. What’s Next: I feel like I’m just starting to hit my prime as a parent and businessperson.

Multi-hyphenate Lenny Bazemore of The Bazemore Gallery and The Juice Merchant is making his mark in Manayunk. First Job: A newspaper delivery boy. I was an entrepreneur back then, too. I handed out extra routes to my friends. On Philly’s Art Scene: It is always changing. People should definitely do a Mural Arts tour and visit the smaller galleries that desperately need their support. Buying art is a great way to enhance your life. Words to Live By: In my office, I have a huge quote on the wall so that everyone can see it: “Do the right thing, the right way, until you get the right results.” Life Lessons: I believe that integrity and a great smile are two of the best qualities a person can have. World Travels: I have seen most of America and different parts of Europe, China, Canada, and the Caribbean. In August, my family and I visited parts of Africa and Dubai. I am truly blessed to have traveled well. Role Models: James Baldwin and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Best Business Practices: Running multiple businesses is not easy. I rely on my employees to keep everything operating smoothly. Daily phone conversations, text messages, and meetings are crucial. Philly Favorites: I enjoy shopping at Boyds. Jeff Glass is a cool dude and working with Bill Bolling is always a blast. I love dining at 1862 at The Union League, Volvér, and Del Frisco’s. I go to Land Rover Main Line and F.C Kerbeck—they come to the house to pick up the Bentley when it’s time for service. Walking along Penn’s Landing or by the river near the Art Museum is always a peaceful time. Family Ties: I am where I am today because of my family. My wife and kids have given me the most amazing support system that is reinforced with love, respect, and friendship. I owe them everything.ocial Social Media Handle: @bazemoregallery

Mark Nicoletti, co-CEO and principal of Philadelphia Suburban Development Corporation, takes an attitude of gratitude at work and in life. First Job: I was a DJ at Smokey Joe’s. Words to Live By: God brings people into our lives for a purpose. Best Business Practices: Show up and be on time. Philly Favorites: Tredici and The Rittenhouse’s Library Bar. Giving Back: It’s simple: Live each day grateful for the opportunities God gave you while you also look for the opportunities he expects you to help create for others. Life Lessons: In February, I lost my dad, who I have worked with for 35 years. Despite how hard it has been not having him in my life, not a day goes by that I don’t draw on his great examples and feel his spirit with me.

On My Nightstand: A tall glass of water and today’s New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Building Bridges: I thrive on genuine social interaction and have enjoyed most of my adult life connecting people personally and professionally without any agenda. It is so much fun to see people you have introduced end up working together or building friendships. What’s Next: At work, we will be managing our family business next year more conservatively with the idea that there may likely be economic headwinds for commercial real estate in 2017 and 2018. Personally, my five wonderful kids are my primary focus.

Don Bell is back behind the desk where his career began as CBS3 ’s sports director. First Job: I worked at WWSB in Sarasota, Florida. I was straight out of Northwestern where I received my Master’s in Broadcast Journalism. I didn’t put a single picture frame on my desk for the first three months because I was pretty sure I was going to get fired. Luckily, I was wrong. Odd Hours: There are a ton of sacrifices, missing holidays or working 18 hours for an Eagles game. People call my schedule nuts; I call it a dream come true. Words to Live By: My boss at my second job gave me the best professional advice I’ve ever heard: Don’t let work get in the way of having fun. From that moment on, I allowed the work to be the fun. Passion Projects: I’ve held solo photography exhibits in Connecticut, Miami Beach, and Venice Beach—I’ll have

one in Philly eventually. I’ve had a love affair with photography since I was 16 years old. Philly Favorites: Cheesesteaks at Amada, cocktails at The Franklin Bar, dancing at Silk City until the walls sweat. Dream Assignment: Me with Jimmie Hendrix, Gordon Parks, Snoop Dogg, Wanda Sykes, Barack Obama, and a bottle of Lagavulin 16. No more details necessary. Family Ties: I’ve covered the Super Bowl, Final Four, Triple Crown Horse Racing. Many of the major health risks that men face—heart disease, lung and prostate cancer—can be prevented, slowed down, or treated with early screening and diagnosis. However, a proactive approach to health is where guys woefully fall short: According to the US Department of Health & Human Services, men are 24 percent less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year. Studies show that men have been raised in a culture “to endure pain” and that many only seek medical counsel when under duress from a family member or when their condition has deteriorated to a severe state. These statistics especially hit home when considering, on average, men live approximately five years less than women. More has been learned about health and disease in the past 50 years than in the entire history of medicine. A number of breakthroughs over the past halfcentury have happened right here in Philadelphia. Here are some of the most fascinating advancements that are becoming standard operating procedure.

Testosterone molecules offer clues to how hormone levels shift throughout the course of a man’s life.

Hormone changes are a natural part of aging, in both men and women. “Traditionally, menopause has been at the forefront, but now men are coming to the table more than ever in the last 15 years, and low testosterone levels are being popularly debated,” says Dr. Anthony J. Bazzan, director of the Hormone Health Program at the Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Jefferson. Decreased testosterone levels can have adverse health effects. “Symptoms can be described on a spectrum or as a continuum. It goes from psychological traits to alterations in actual body composition. Often we see sexual symptoms such as low libido or erectile dysfunction. In other cases, we see a history of feeling unmotivated, tired, or depressed,” explains Dr. Bazzan. “If men are wondering if this is an issue, they can complete the ADAM questionnaire— Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male. It is available online and contains 10 simple questions to screen for low testosterone levels.” The Hormone Replacement Program at the Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Jefferson is a “unique collaboration in an academic institution with boardcertified doctors that practice, meet, and do research together,” says Dr. Bazzan. “When it comes to testosterone replacement, it should not be thought of as a panacea, that it will make people 20 years younger, or just pump hormones into you. We have created a carefully designed protocol to assess symptoms and determine appropriate personal treatment goals, and offer the most advanced treatment.” The Hormone Replacement Program places great emphasis on embracing a better lifestyle—a balanced diet, being physically active, and decreasing stress.

America’s obesity epidemic has hit new heights. Currently, one in three adults are obese—and a growing number of those are severely obese. It is a well-known fact that carrying excess pounds increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and other serious, even fatal, health conditions— nevertheless, men have continued to pile on the pounds. And new research found that being overweight is three times deadlier in men compared to women. “Obesity is a medical disorder that kills. It is not a cosmetic or vanity issue, but a medical disease that is associated with a decrease in the quality of life, life expectancy, and medical complications related to every organ system,” says Dr. Ramsey Dallal, vice chair of the department of surgery at Einstein Healthcare Network. Surgical intervention is not just life-changing, but, in some cases, life-saving for many who have tried and failed at weight loss. “People often have a misconception that obesity surgery is for those who are 500 or 600 pounds. That is not necessarily the case,” says Dr. Dallal. “Generally speaking, if you are 100 pounds over your ideal body weight, you may be a surgical candidate. And that number drops to 75 pounds if you have diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea.” Einstein Healthcare’s Bariatric Surgery Program offers minimally invasive, including robotic, weight-loss surgery. These techniques have been shown to

decrease hospital stays and facilitate recovery. “Patients typically go home the day after surgery and can return to work within days,” says Dr. Dallal. The program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network. “This means that we have demonstrated appropriate safety measures, training, and qualitycontrol initiatives,” he explains.

“Research shows that patients in these centers have better outcomes than non-accredited centers.” Sustained weight loss after surgery poses some unique challenges. Dr. Dallal notes. “That is why we provide free and unlimited access to dieticians and psychologists to help them with education about food and exercise as well as their eating behavior. Our center offers a high level

Despite advances in many areas of health care, stroke—insufficient blood flow to the brain that leads to cell death—remains a devastating disorder. Strokes are the fourth leading cause of death in men in the US. “For the majority who survive, strokes are the chief cause of serious, long-term disability,” explains Dr. Scott Kasner, professor of neurology and director of The Penn Stroke Center. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was the first in Philadelphia, and among a select few throughout the US, to become certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Dr. Kasner says, “This prestigious designation underscores that as we evaluate, diagnose, and treat stroke—and other diseases affecting the blood vessels in the brain—our patients will receive the most advanced care.”

Along with significant resources in staff and training, research is a key component of the Penn Stroke Center. Currently there are dozens of research trials and projects underway. “Our physicists developed a tool that we are using at the bedside to measure blood flow to the brain in real time. This allows us to individually optimize blood flow instead of using the typical one-sizefits-all approach,” says Dr. Kasner. “Research is necessary to advance stroke care.” Penn Medicine also employs tele-medicine to extend its stroke care to other medical centers. “A monitor allows us to examine and communicate with the patient as well as look at imaging studies. In doing so, we can provide on-thespot expertise to their doctors and help to determine the best treatment, and even who would be a candidate for transfer for surgery and/or specialized care at Penn.” The fact is that men need to be extra vigilant about the risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and physical

inactivity. When early recognition of warning signs is combined with timely treatment, says Dr. Kasner, “we can avoid or decrease disability and perhaps save someone’s life.” Comprehensive Stroke Center, University of Pennsylvania Health System, 3 West Gates Building, 3400 Spruce St., 215-662-3564; pennstroke.org SCREEN TImE

Colorectal cancer is easily preventable, but it remains one of the nation’s leading cause of cancer deaths. Although it occurs in both genders, men have an increased incidence of this type of cancer, and are more likely to develop it at an earlier age and die from it. The most effective way to prevent colorectal cancer is colonoscopy, yet screening rates remain low. John H. Marks, MD, section chief of Colorectal Surgery at Main Line Health and medical director of the Colorectal Cancer Program at Lankenau Medical Center, says, “While there’s hesitation when discussing your colon, timely

colonoscopies can save your life.” It’s recommended that colonoscopies begin at age 50 and continue until 75; screening should start earlier if there are other risk factors—a personal or family history of colon cancer, polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease—or if symptoms like bleeding, change in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss occur. “Many patients are reluctant to seek traditional treatments because they are concerned that it could greatly affect their quality of life,” explains Dr. Marks. “The Colorectal Center at Lankenau Medical Center has spearheaded the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques that preserve sphincter function and eliminate the need for a colostomy bag—an external system that collects stool.” At Lankenau, 90 to 95 percent of colorectal cancer resections are performed this way utilizing laparoscopic or robotic techniques, compared to 40 to 60 percent for the national average. “Patients around the world visit us to receive innovative, high-quality care that preserves and enhances their quality of life,” he says. The Colorectal Center at Lankenau is a dedicated space for excellence in comprehensive treatment and surgical care. “We’ve championed a multidisciplinary approach to colorectal cancer—incorporating specialists in radiation and medical oncology, pathology, genetics, gastroenterology, and radiology— to provide superior care,” says Dr. Marks. “We are an interactive center for scientists and clinicians to solve the most demanding problems in the fight to prevent, treat, and manage colorectal cancer through active clinical research and innovation.” The Colorectal Center at Lankenau

are around 15 board-certified surgeons that perform more than 50 implants a year. At Einstein Healthcare Network, we do approximately 90. Our volume and expertise is one of the reasons that we have a large referral base that crosses state lines.” Patients who elect to undergo the procedure can expect general anesthesia, an average operative time of 30 to 40 minutes, and an overnight hospital stay for monitoring. “I also tell my patients they will usually

It’s no secret that professional athletes face the greatest risk for injuries, particularly knee injuries, which in some cases can abruptly end careers. But even recreational athletes of all ages, disciplines, and abilities are at risk for what is one of the most common reasons that patients seek medical attention, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: In 2010, there were 10.4 million patient visits to doctors’ offices due to fractures, dislocations, sprains, and ligament tears, all of which can lead to cartilage injury. Drs. Bradford S. Tucker and Kevin Freedman, sports medicine surgeons at the Cartilage Restoration Center at Rothman Institute, know these statistics all too well, with the majority of their patients, including many of Philly’s top athletes, visiting for cartilage injuries to the knee. When there is damage or deterioration in cartilage— a firm, smooth, and slippery covering on the ends of bones that protects and cushions the bones in your joint—patients can have pain and discomfort. The Center offers many new advances in cartilage restoration

that are helping restore normal activity and delay—or eliminate the need for—knee replacements. “The ideal candidate ranges from teenaged to 50 years old, can’t do the things they want to, and conservative treatment-— physical therapy, cortisone shots—has failed them,” says Dr. Tucker, director of the Cartilage Restoration Center. Cartilage restoration involves surgically transplanting live cartilage or growing new cartilage over time by implanting cells. Dr. Tucker notes that the recovery process is lengthy, from six months to a year, with daily physical therapy. Although even normal wear and tear from aging can contribute to knee injuries, there are preventative measures that men can take. “Appropriate strengthening and stretching around the hip and knee can decrease knee injuries up to 80 percent,” says Dr. Tucker, noting that squats, lunges, and “learning proper technique in jumping-and-landing” activities are some of the best moves. “Often ‘weekend athletes’ will go out and play a pickup game of basketball and sustain an injury because they aren’t in shape.” It’s these types of incidents that differentiate men and women when it comes to knee injuries. “Women usually suffer from cartilage deterioration over time, but injuries to men are typically more traumatic in nature,” says Dr. Freedman, associate director of the Cartilage Restoration Center. “That’s why prevention is so important. That same principle applies to other joints around the body like hips, shoulders, and elbows.” Freedman adds: “Young or old, men want to remain active. This program is destined to help men achieve that goal.” Rothman Institute, 925 Chestnut St., 800321-9999; rothmaninstitute.com

“It’s really exciting to picture a resident looking out [from their home] at these famous prestigious buildings that are part of our national heritage,” says Tom Scannapieco, developer of 500 Walnut.

Breaking its own record of the highest residence sale in Philadelphia at $17.85 million, Scannapieco Development Corporation has answered a growing demand for high-caliber residences with their newest development 500 Walnut (500walnut.net). Expected to begin occupancy in Spring 2017, the Society Hill high-rise takes the form of 26 lustrous glass stories overlooking Independence National Historical Park. Tom Scannapieco, president and CEO of Scannapieco Development Corporation, says it was his landmark project, 1706 Rittenhouse, that set the stage for 500 Walnut’s success. “We took the key elements that drove demand for 1706 and are exclusive only to our properties, like the ability to customize units, privacy with only 30-plus units, automated parking and a jewel location— and then elevated those offerings with 500 Walnut,” he says. Designed by award-winning architect Cecil Baker and Partners, 500 Walnut boasts 35 full-floor, private residences at over 4,300 square feet. Each offers expansive balconies, private elevator access, and 11-foot ceilings. Building amenities include a sky-lit 50-foot pool, treetop terrace, outdoor fireplace, fully-automated parking facility, and town car with driver. Playbook, luxury extended-stay hotelier AKA has debuted its latest $13 million revitalization project AKA Washington Square (stayaka.com), an entirely branded floor of The Franklin Residences. The iconic property has 93 rooms, 30 of which are now a part of the AKA collection. The units are one- and two bedroom, with fully equipped kitchens, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, walk-in closets, and large marble-finished baths. “We have added and refurbished many amenities for residents-—and soon the public— including live music in the lobby, traditional afternoon tea, and, this fall, we will be unveiling Rarest, a new culinary offering at the corner of Ninth and Chestnut streets,” says Larry Korman, president of AKA. Jewelers’ Row, a neighborhood gem in every sense of the word, is getting new neighbors. Toll Brothers City Living’s Washington Square Development (tollbrothers.com) is the newly introduced plan for a 16-story condo tower built above the commercial space that lines Sansom Street to bring renewed interest to one of the city’s most iconic districts. One to four-bedroom units will be available in the 80-unit tower, with many offering views of Washington Square. Valet parking, a full-service concierge, fitness studio, and pet spa are among the property’s planned amenities with even more slated as the project continues to evolve. Tim Spreitzer, spokesperson for Toll Brothers City Living, says the property’s entrance and loading zone will be located on Seventh Street to protect the character of Jewelers’ Row. Says Spreitzer: “It is our intention to protect not only the culture and heritage of Jewelers’ Row but also its look and feel.”

impart a warm holiday feel, she says. “Try integrating more lighted elements inside and out during the holidays to set the scene including pillars, tapers, votives, spheres, strings of lights, and lanterns from Restoration Hardware, or illuminated containers of twigs.” She also suggests thinking

beyond the old standards. “Do away with the usual pinecones and evergreens— instead, try something more whimsical. Add something that reflects your personality by introducing non-traditional colors like teal and green with unexpected textures. Think of using a topiary with peacock feathers, or beach-

inspired garland for the mantel or buffet, or a tablescape of neutrals and sky blue with seashell accents.” In the end, she says, “There’s nothing better than hosting a big dinner party and joining everyone around the table with a nice fire and some music.” bjsinteriordesign.com

GET A ROOM HOW ONE PHILLY SOMMELIER AND WINE EDUCATOR GOT SCHOOLED WHILE TURNING HIS BASEMENT MAN CAVE INTO A HANDSOME WINE ROOM.

My wife had serious concerns. In hindsight, now that my wine room is completed—the racks neatly lining the walls and the tops of the bottles jutting out like some kind of grown-up version of a Lite-Brite—she had every reason to worry. I never want to leave. It’s like the ultimate man cave, but better: Instead of a kegerator, I have my beloved bottles of wine, reposing happily at a constant 55 degrees Fahrenheit, at perfect humidity, and aging at exactly the right pace. But what went into building that getaway took even me by surprise. Thankfully I had nationally renowned wine-storage guru Scot “Zippy” Ziskind, of ZipCo Wine Cellar Services, to guide me through the process. With nearly 40 years in business, clients across the US, and an increasing involvement in the cannabis industry in the states where medical marijuana is legal (the plants thrive with precise temperature and humidity), he had the steps down to a science. My not-so-spacious nineby-15-foot basement was no problem at all for Ziskind, who later explained to me that his South Jersey company has transformed spaces as small as a kitchen cabinet in Aspen into a fully functioning wine cellar, and, on

the other end of the spectrum, created “a 31-foot-tall glass cylinder that holds 10,000 bottles of wine” at Flying Horse Country Club in Colorado Springs. We ultimately settled on five by eight feet for the wine room, which may not sound that large, but the way Ziskind designed the racking has allowed it to hold more than 500 bottles, and includes a work desk. Even that required prior thought: Do I have more Bordeaux-style bottles (narrower and with high shoulders) or Burgundystyle ones (more sloping shoulders and a bit wider)? Do I collect standard 750ml bottles or magnums? What about Champagne? Port? Riesling? All of this would impact the racking design. Ziskind regularly

performs this kind of alchemy for clients with budgets that run the gamut. (His average job runs between $35,000 and $50,000.) No matter how much a client has to spend, he stresses the importance of making sure a winecellaring professional handles the task. “A general contractor should not be handling this project himself: That’s where big, costly mistakes are made.” The equipment, the insulation, the balance of temperature and humidity, all of these have to be done by an expert to ensure that the cellar is correctly built. After two weeks, my wine room was done: My precious bottles finally had an appropriate home in my own house. I can’t think of a better reason to make a toast. After the successful launches of Atelier Swarovski jewelry and accessories, Swarovski has added another beautiful branch to its more than 120-year-old empire with the debut of Atelier Swarovski Home. Says Nadja Swarovski, head of corporate communications and design services, “We wanted to translate the forward-thinking design DNA and technical expertise within our brand, as well as the energy of the creative talent, into a collection of luxurious and covetable objects.” For the debut, the company collaborated with nine of the world’s leading designers for crystal objects that are remarkable for their artistry and technologically advanced design. Included in the collection is a chessboard combining maps of Manhattan and Milan designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, as well as a series of sculptural candle holders from Kim Thomé. Most noteworthy in the collection is the Crista centerpiece by the late architect Zaha Hadid. It utilizes Swarovski’s groundbreaking Wave Cut technique, which “combines cutting-edge computer technology with mechanical engineering to cut curved forms in crystal,” says Swarovski. “The wave-cutting technique took 10 years to develop, and only two people in the world are able to skillfully use the machine,” she adds. “We were all so heartbroken by Zaha Hadid’s passing, but it seems fitting that she was the first person to use this new technology with one of the final pieces she produced.” 1421 Walnut St., 215- 563-9374; atelierswarovski.com

Golden Touch As his spring Mill roAd MAsterwork hits the MArket, Architect Fred Bissinger reveAls how he MAde this estAte look right At hoMe on the MAin line’s gold coAst. By Kathleen n. WeBBer

Labor of love: This sprawling estate, set on 4.5 acres at 744 North Spring Mill Road, took over four years to build.

Most people who drive by the majestic home Fred Bissinger designed on Spring Mill Road in Villanova think it has been there for 100 years or more. Try 15. But making a new home look like it has been part of the landscape is Bissinger’s calling card. In 1996, a Philadelphia couple approached him about creating something timeless for their family of four. The pair had already scoured the area looking for an old house, but nothing fit the bill. They bought two adjoining lots and then interviewed Bissinger. They asked him for a house with an “old-world” feeling, and two weeks later the architect presented them with plans. They only changed one thing, a chimney. “We gave Fred a very general direction, and he nailed it,” says the homeowner, who is leaving the Main Line behind to travel. In fact, the couple loved his original hand-drawn sketches so much, they framed them. The home, a 14,000-square-foot hand-cut stone beauty with a red-tile roof, took over four years to build, but they declare it was worth the wait. Bissinger calls it an “artisan revival-style” home because it matches the fine craftsmanship and high-quality materials found in the best homes of a century ago. Sitting on four-plus acres in Villanova, the residence features a gracious marble-paved entrance hall with a tall Palladian window that

SPACE INTERIORS Multiple rear terraces offer views of the estate’s private gardens.

everything right when you walk in,” says Bissinger. Amenities include a home theater, a virtual reality golf room, a resort-quality gym plus sauna that open to a third-floor veranda, and a large bright billiard room, also on the third floor. Bissinger also incorporated what the owner calls “surprises.” One of these is a small stair that climbs from the billiard room to a rooftop widow’s walk to provide a panoramic

view of the Main Line. Hand-carved details and custom molded ceilings enhance many rooms. A piece of wood crown molding found in England was re-created in cast plaster for the breakfast room. Ed Mahoney of E.B. Mahoney builders executed the vision for the house and assembled the artisans. “Building this house was a lifelong dream for them,” says Mahoney of his clients.

Mahoney, whose family business has been on the Main Line for 90 years, compares the level of detail to that seen at Biltmore or the Hearst Castle. “I have known Fred for 30 years, and he takes things off the wall, not off the shelf. Everything is thought out—from the finial and weathervanes to the limestone around the windows and the ornamental plaster.” Many a passerby has mistaken the home for one

with a longer history. “I consider it a compliment when people think it is not new,” Bissinger quips. “This house can proudly take its place with the earlier Main Line Gold Coast mansions lining Spring Mill Road. This was one of the most inspired houses I have ever done. It is grand without ever being pompous.” For more information, contact Lisa Weber Yakulis, 610-229-9011; lisaweberyakulis.com.

overlooks the expansive landscaped grounds. One feature on the owners’ wish list was a wedding-appropriate staircase (for their children to use someday). The result was a split “butterfly” plan with turned balusters and a massive mahogany rail that swirls into hand-carved newel posts. While the home is large, it isn’t overwhelming. The spine is a long axial hall with rooms coming off it. “We didn’t want to reveal

MOMENT OF TRUTH “HUFF AND I GOT OUR FIRST GOLD RECORDS FOR WHAT WE WROTE AND PRODUCED IN PHILLY.” —KENNY GAMBLE

NAME THAT TUNE

Every morning that Kenny Gamble wakes up, he falls in love with Philadelphia all over again. The man behind the uplifting Sound of Philadelphia (Teddy Pendergrass, the O’Jays) and Philadelphia International Records is an architect of soul with a local touch. “There’s something in the water,” says Gamble,

168

PHILLYSTYLEMAG.COM

who also heads up the nonprofit education management and housing development, Universal Companies. He and longtime partner Leon Huff are in the process of writing a jukebox musical à la Jersey Boys featuring their catalog of hits and lesser-known gems. Sure to be featured prominently is

the one thing Gamble’s milestones all have in common: Philadelphia. “Huff and I got our first gold records for what we wrote and produced in Philly, ‘Expressway to Your Heart’ by The Soul Survivors and ‘Cowboys to Girls’ for the Intruders.” Gamble’s dedication to this city makes him an

obvious recipient of the 2016 Marian Anderson Award (along with Huff and old friend Patti LaBelle) on November 15 for his leadership impact. “I never met Ms. Anderson, but I always looked up to her for everything she did socially and musically,” he says. The songwriter is currently penning new material for

crooner Michael Bublé. “I saw Bublé the last time he came through town, and I thought he wasmarvelous— the next Sinatra,” says Gamble, who recalls that the singer performed Gamble & Huff’s “Me and Mrs. Jones.” “These are the sort of projects that Huff and I still crave.” gamble-huffmusic.com
