BLONDE AMBITION

A retail buyer by day, Kristin Summers’s night gig as fashion blogger is more than just a passing fancy. Under the alias Blonde on Earth, this Philly-based social media queen has racked up some 30,000 Instagram followers as well as a growing list of partnerships (South Moon Under, Happy Socks, and Sally Beauty Supply to name a few) thanks to her pastel-

soaked shots of fashion, cityscapes, and the occasional doughnut smothered in rainbow sprinkles. Her blog started almost by accident: Feeling out of sorts after a career-inspired move from Philly to Baltimore, she set out on a three-week road trip to Florida to get away from it all. “I took about a thousand pictures and notes while on that trip,” says Summers. “When

I got back I opened a WordPress account, sort of as my personal diary and a place to store all my photos, and my blog took off from there. It was the new start I was dreaming of.” She credits her growing social media following to her fun, colorful content. “I love being that [blog] that inspires people and brightens up their day, whether it be a photo of a

fun mural or a beautiful pattern on a dress.” And though this self-proclaimed “professional tourist” plans to build her travel portfolio over the next year, she has plenty of experience snapping city life at home. “Philadelphia is full of history, fashion, and incredible restaurants,” she says. “It isn’t hard to make this city look great.” blondeonearth.com

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

The summer is behind us and I couldn’t be happier. It sounds crazy but hear me out. Besides stealing away to enjoy the positively sublime beach weather post-Labor Day, September signals the return of fall fashion. That means cashmere, knee-high boots, and an excuse to buy yet another pair of jeans. It’s an especially exciting time in Philadelphia thanks to a retail boom the likes of which we haven’t seen for some time. Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Jimmy Choo, Robert Graham, and MCM are just some of the big-name designers planting their fashion flags at the King of

Prussia Mall’s multimillion-dollar new wing. Wharton grad Stuart Weitzman is opening a store there, too, just three years after his Center City boutique. Beyond the mall, notable names in the national lifestyle sphere have joined the fray: you can now pedal your problems away at SoulCycle, get a Blake Lively-inspired blowout at Drybar, and embrace the return of carbs at Scarpetta, an Italian dining export right out of Miami and New York. Not to be outdone, Philly notables Kate Egan and Brian Kappra have both debuted luxury gift boutiques. All of this grand-opening action

translates to an even stronger local economy and further raises the city’s profile as a place to do business. But with every new shop, restaurant, or salon, we gain one more ambassador for the city. I don’t know about you but I’m thrilled to be on the same cheerleading squad as the eternally chic DVF. Happy shopping!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

With Meg Saligman, Mayor Jim Kenney, and Kristin Detterline at the mural rededication for Our Flag Unfurled.

Last year at this time all talk was centered around the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. In July, the City of Brotherly Love welcomed the 2016 Democratic National Convention. These two pinnacle events in local history couldn’t be more different--except for one thing. Both were major media moments for Philadelphia. The attention our city received was astronomical, and the economic benefit of hosting these large-scale gatherings will only impact the Greater Philadelphia region in a positive way for years to come. This is just the beginning: Philadelphia is poised to become a regular destination for the largest, most important international events. Here at Philadelphia Style, our local footprint continues to grow. During our annual Best of Style event at the Kimmel Center in July, Philadelphia Style and CBS Radio’s

KYW Newsradio 1060 announced the launch of our co-branded lifestyle website, CBSPhillySTYLE.com. The outlet allows readers to enjoy Philadelphia Style articles, exclusive guest columns and content, photo galleries from our events, and more. This new, more dynamic online experience represents a cross section of both news and lifestyle content for Philadelphia residents and visitors alike. We will have plenty to cover as we move into the busy fall season in Philadelphia and look forward to giving you a first look at the biggest and best happenings in the city and suburbs.

DaviD HocHman David Hochman, who penned our cover story on Billions stars Paul Giamatti and Maggie Siff (page 90), covers travel, the good life, and fame for The New York Times, Food & Wine, and Forbes, among other publications. He lives near the beach in Los Angeles with his chocolatier wife, Ruth Kennison, who runs the Chocolate Project, and their son, Sebastian. In your cover interview, we hear Giamatti’s and Siff’s opinions on the 0.0001 percent—what are yours? I love people who earn big and live well—as long as they give back and live well with others. Beyond the all-star performances, why has Billions captured such national interest? Billions captures our collective moment. The gulf between the haves and the have-waymores, the cult around performance coaching and TED-like self-improvements, the thrall of the brash billionaire. It’s all there. Dead or alive, who, in order, are your three dream interviews? Eve, William Shakespeare, and Sacha Baron Cohen.

isabel Dupré

a.D. amorosi

jessica green

French-born stylist Isabel Dupré’s remarkable career began as style director at Elle, where she worked for 13 years with creative director and photographer Gilles Bensimon. Dupré has collaborated closely with a number of renowned photographers, including Ruven Afanador, Peter Lindbergh, and Annie Leibovitz. She styled the fashion feature (page 96) for this issue.

A.D. Amorosi is a richly experienced writer and editor who—along with writing for newspapers, magazines, and websites across the globe—has been part of Philadelphia Style since its start. Married with a greyhound and doves, he lives in South Philly. In this issue, Amorosi interviewed Opera Philadelphia composer Missy Mazzoli (page 56).

Jessica Green is a Philadelphia-based editor and writer who lives in Center City with her fiancé. When not busy planning her upcoming walk down the aisle, she wrote about current trends for wedding entertainment and hairstyles for this issue on pages 156 and 160.

What’s your favorite fall trend? I love the magic fairy-tale theme—romantic princesses, gold, rhinestones, dresses embellished with butterflies, and highwaisted, floor-sweeping gowns. We need a little dream right now. Tell us about your most exciting professional moment. Attending the last show designed by Yves Saint Laurent is something I won’t forget. How would you describe your personal style? Depends on the day. I go from insouciant-chic to a mixture of masculinefeminine. I like to mix high and low.

Music has influenced the life of Missy Mazzoli. How does music inspire you? It is the backbone, frontbone, soul, mind, and spine of everything that I have been since childhood. From Broadway shows and David Bowie to BB King and Beyonce, I think about my life’s decisions in the form of a weird soundtrack. What impact has music had on Philadelphia? From the folk and jazz clubs of the ’50s and ’60s, to the funk, soul, and disco lounges and punk spots of the ’70s and ’80s to the house music and hip-hop joints of the ’90s and 2000s, this city forever ate, drank, and slept music.

What are some of the biggest fall fashion trends for brides? I’m seeing a lot more color, but in different ways. Think watercolor, muted tones, and darker palettes. I’m also seeing brides get a lot less classic with their styles. It seems many are saying goodbye to tight updos and ball gowns and instead opting for flowing hair and fitted gowns. Tell us about your research on reception entertainment. I know that brides go above and beyond to make their weddings unique, but when I heard about hiring aerial bartenders to serve a signature cocktail I was shocked. I truly hope I attend a wedding that incorporates this one day.

The Voice Chic chanteuse Adele returns to Philly on her sold-out world tour.

Photography by Samir Hussein/Getty Images

By Connie Capone

Her haunting, unmistakable voice shook the Electric Factory in 2011, and after five years she returns to the City of Brotherly Love to perform back-to-back concerts at the Wells Fargo Center September 9–10. Adele, who has joined Cher, Madonna, and Britney in needing no other introduction beyond her singular moniker, is touring to promote her latest album, 25, an international smash that has topped the Billboard charts and garnered the Brit Awards’ Album of the Year as well as Single of the Year for “Hello.” “Adele’s voice is arguably the best our generation has to offer,” says Mike Adam, afternoon drive host on 96.5 AMP Radio. “She has a raspy, soulful sound that delivers flawlessly on records and during live performances.” Adam says that Adele shakes up the normative record-label-created images that are fed to consumers. “She completely destroys everything you think a pop star should look or act like. People can actually relate to Adele and see her as a real person.” Philadelphia is the first East Coast stop during her tour, with every performance in North America, from Toronto to Mexico City, sold out. “Where the demand is high, the artists will go,”  says Adam. “And Philly loves us some Adele.” wellsfargocenterphilly.com

LARGER THAN LIFE

An artist whose vivid murals decorate Philadelphia from the Market-Frankford SEPTA train to galleries and school ceilings, Ben Volta says his work is rooted in education and exploration. Volta’s “Pattern Process” is on view at the PAFA Alumni gallery starting September 21 at the Furness and Hewitt Historic Landmark Building. “The installation will feature pattern fragments from multiple projects suspended above on clotheslines,” Volta says. “I want to explore the creative process as a cycle that is revisited over and over again. The fall season ushers in bursts of new hues and dynamic displays at Longwood Gardens’ multidimensional “Autumn’s Colors,” September 10– November 20. Highlights include the Thousand Bloom Mum, North America’s largest mum, and the Flower Garden Walk. Paul B. Redman, executive director for Longwood Gardens, says the Chrysanthemum Festival, with over 80,000 blooms in the garden’s four-acre conservatory, takes center stage during “Autumn’s Colors.” “We grow our mums into unique forms and shapes, including giant orbs, shields, spirals, and more” he says, “It really is something to see.” longwood gardens.org

Curator Kirsten Jensen says Hertzel’s work reinvigorates Michener’s commitment to contemporary sculpture. “Hertzel’s work is significant because it represents the intersection of nature and spirit, of the abstract and the real,” she says. “In an age obsessed with social media and selfies, Hertzel’s work returns us to the fundamentals of art and experience,

For an explosion of original entertainment all over Philadelphia, look no further than the Fringe Arts Festival. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in Philly, the 17-day fête starts September 9 with a melange of contemporary performance, from theater and music to spoken-word

MISSY MOZART COMPOSER MISSY MAZZOLI MAKES WAVES WITH HER MOVIE-INSPIRED SCORE FOR OPERA PHILADELPHIA’S SPLASHY SEASON PREMIERE.

All the right notes! Missy Mazzoli is back in her hometown to open Opera Philadelphia’s 42nd season.

56  phillystylemag.com

Reflective avant-garde composer and keyboardist Missy Mazzoli has won dazzling acclaim and critical respect for her somber, swelling pieces, which have resonated through such hallowed halls as Carnegie Hall and London’s Barbican Centre. She also leads a music ensemble, Victoire, whose albums feature guests like Wilco and The National. “I’m definitely no purist,” Mazzoli says of her

classically based sonic style. “Once you start writing and working in opera, you just can’t enough.” But where she got her start—and where she’ll surely nail down one of her finest achievements— is Philadelphia. Born in Lansdale (she currently resides in Brooklyn), Mazzoli has been working in Philly since 2012 as composer-in-residence for Opera Philadelphia; her upcoming opera, an adaptation of Lars von

Trier’s dark 1996 film Breaking the Waves, has its world premiere at the Kimmel Center on September 22. “I started playing music very early on as a kid, and it was most certainly classical,” she says. But that never made her a classical-only baby: by her mid-teens, Mazzoli had “a Pixies-sounding punk rock band of my own,” and spent her fair share of time hitting the Philly clubs. “Don’t tell my mom, but I

used to sneak out to go dance at Shampoo and see concerts at Electric Factory,” she says with a laugh. As for debuting the tragic Breaking the Waves through Opera Philadelphia (“make no mistake, it is a hard story to watch,” she recalls of the film), the in-demand modernist composer was delighted by how “eclectic this company is” and the city’s evolving fan base. “It’s quite a scene.” operaphila.org

The sushi and ceviche bar and raw bar are also worth a look, and are best enjoyed alongside one of Aqimero’s many signature cocktails: Here, the standard margarita and mule are mezcal-based, while the classic Paloma benefits from grapefruit soda from Mexican brand Jarritos. With only a handful of fine-dining Latin American restaurants in Philadelphia, Aqimero’s arrival signals a shift in the city’s already eclectic culinary interests. That change is not lost on Sandoval. “We’re bringing the Latin American ritual of the meal to Philly in a modern, sustainable way,” he says. Olé! richard sandoval.com/aqimero

What does it take to lure one of the world’s busiest restaurateurs—40 restaurants and counting from New York City to Dubai—to Philadelphia? For celebrity chef-owner Richard Sandoval, it was one look around the Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia’s magnificent marble lobby. “Philly has already exceeded our expectations,” says Sandoval, standing in the glass-enclosed kitchen of his buzzy new Latin American concept, Aqimero, on a late summer evening. With more than 200 seats between the formal dining room and see-and-be-seen lobby bar—both bathed in the Ritz’s new metallic hues thanks to a multimilliondollar renovation—the restaurant reflects Sandoval’s made-from-scratch style and many South of the Border influences, Peruvian and Latin-Asian among them. 60  phillystylemag.com

Superhero wannabes can now channel Superman’s faster-than-a-speedingbullet powers at iFLY, a new indoor skydiving center that just opened near the King of Prussia Mall. The best part? There’s no need to jump out of an airplane—in fact, there’s no jumping involved at all. The towering, 14-foot-diameter glass flight chamber propels a breathtaking (literally) stream of air

from beneath a grated floor to help achieve weightlessness. Fear not, first-time flyers: There’s a short training session to review basic body positions and hand signals, and head-to-toe gear is required. Once inside the wind tunnel you do nothing but “relax and breathe,” as certified instructor and former Marine Casey Gardiner says. Gardiner acts as your in-flight

anchor, making adjustments throughout and, depending on your comfort level, even taking you for a few loops around the tunnel. iFLY is racking up frequent flyer miles from Philly’s certified skydivers, retired veterans, three-year-olds, the handicapped, and—the center’s fastest-growing demographic—millennial women. Plans are already underway to

open a second area location this fall in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, but iFLY has had its sights set on Philly for years, according to Matt Ryan, president and COO of iFLY. “King of Prussia was a natural fit. The mall itself was already a world-class destination, but its recent expansion and all of the nearby developments mean we’re landing at the right time.” iflyworld.com

The only thing rarer than opening a live-music club in Philly? Opening a comedy club. So having Live Nation add Punch Line to its venue roster nearly a year after adding The Fillmore Philadelphia is an achievement for the concert company—and a victory for stand-ups and sketch-comedy troupes, both local and national. “Philly has been in need of a place like Punch Line,” says Asyia Ahmed, general manager. “Being Live Nation’s first major comedy club on the East Coast allows us to set the tone and bring in huge names like Dave Chappelle, Russell

Peters, and Marlon Wayans.” Local comedian and America’s Got Talent alum Doogie Horner, who played one of Punch Line’s first shows, agrees about the more-ismerrier aspect of adding Punch Line to Philly’s comedy scene, which includes Helium on Sansom Street. “This opening raises Philly’s profile as a comedy city and legitimizes it in some peoples’ eyes,” Horner says of the new Fishtown venue and its 300 seats, VIP section, and outdoor patio. Next up? Comedy Central’s Nikki Glaser, who plays four shows, August 25–27. punchlinephilly.com

SUGAR CHIC MICHAEL TAN WHIPS UP FALL’S MOST FASHIONABLE FLAVORS AT ICI MACARONS & CAFÉ.

From cakes to cupcakes and doughnuts to cronuts, no dessert has quite the confectionary cachet as the macaron. France’s finest export is in good hands with Michael Tan, owner of ICI Macarons & Café. And though raspberry, pistachio, and chocolate will always be first-choice flavors, Tan looks to the seasons to inform the more than 30 varieties on display in his Old City boulangerie. For fall, pumpkin spice is one of Tan’s favorites, while on warmer late summer days, “one should opt for a citrus-flavored cookie,” he says. Hazelnut, lime basil, and milk and honey are other delectable riffs, all whipped up by Aici, Tan’s wife, business partner, and the café’s sole baker. What’s special about a macaron, according to Tan, is the preparation. “We put so much time into each cookie, the taste as well as the look and the texture are all important, he notes, adding that another part of the macaron’s allure is that they aren’t easy to make at home. “It takes a lot of practice and attention to detail to perfect the recipe.” ICI celebrates its one-year anniversary in September, and the Tans are already considering a second Philly location for their café concept. Girl, Code!

Corinne Warnshuis, shown above speaking in San Francisco at Dreamforce 2015, the world’s largest tech conference.

66  phillystylemag.com

Raised by a single mother who not only survived breast cancer but raised her five children while working as a hairdresser, Corinne Warnshuis has seen firsthand what a strong woman is capable of—and she’s determined to empower women by providing inexpensive, accessible computer and coding classes. This 28-year-old California native is the “It” girl of IT

with the work she’s doing as executive director of Girl Develop It, a national nonprofit headquartered in Philadelphia that provides women web and software development classes in 54 cities across the nation. With only two years at the helm of GDI, she’s already been invited— twice—to the White House: attending the first-ever White House

Tech Meetup last year and rubbing shoulders earlier this year with the likes of Gloria Steinem, Oprah Winfrey, and Michelle Obama at the summit on the United State of Women. Warnshuis’s calendar is packed these days (she was recently accepted to Stanford University’s Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders), and she knows the stakes are

big. “At the beginning, we said ‘Let’s not talk about the problem, let’s do something about women being left out of the tech conversation,’” she says. “We’re now teaching a thousand women a month. And when women find their confidence in the classroom, they realize they can do other things, too. That’s the promise of women’s empowerment.” girldevelopit.com

In the pantheon of fashion designers, no one has reached more prolific success and industry respect than Diane von Furstenberg (aka “DVF,” as she’s universally known). From her first iconic wrap dress—more than one million were sold in the first two years of their debut in 1974—through her current gig at the lofty helm of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the former princess is a woman’s designer, creating pieces that are sexy and flattering to all shapes and sizes, not just living mannequins. Among her devotees are a fair share of celebs and socialites who have made her a staple on the red carpet circuit, including Julia Roberts, Blake Lively, and Olivia Palermo. Philly fashion seekers have been able to get their well-manicured hands on choice DVF pieces like the wrap dress at area department stores for years, but now they’ll have 1,600 square feet dedicated solely to the designer, as the label just opened the doors to its new boutique in the King of Prussia Mall expansion. “This is the brand’s first store in Pennsylvania, so I’m excited to bring DVF to the Philadelphia woman and have a presence in such a beautiful, vibrant, and iconic city,” says von Furstenberg. She is in charge of her life; she knows the woman she wants to be and goes for it,” von Furstenberg says. She’s clearly leading by example. dvf.com

“When we first started I knew we wanted to do a bar concept,” notes Webb, whose salons tally one million blowouts a year. Hence the long marble counter, flat screens with chick flicks on repeat, and a menu of hairstyles named after drinks: The Manhattan, Southern Comfort, and Uptini.

Webb’s husband is in charge of branding (hello, yellow!) and her brother handles the business side of things. “It’s so nice that my brother and I were able to find success together,” Webb says. The trio is currently working on building a better travel-size hair dryer.

“We’ve wanted to open in Philly for a while,” says Webb of Drybar’s 61st location, at 17th and Market streets. “We’re close to Rittenhouse, and there are so many working women around here. Our clients have been anxiously awaiting a location in Philly.”

Drybar’s success has pushed Webb into other pursuits of late. You can find her on QVC selling the brand’s signature hair dryers—“we sell 2,000 in 15 minutes”—and in bookstores this fall when her first title, The Drybar Guide to Good Hair for All, drops. “I’m spilling all my knowledge and sharing my personal story,” says Webb.

Besides investing in a good hair dryer, Webb (who favors the tousled Mai Tai style) says the right products are key to extending your blowout. “Using heavy hydrating crèmes on fine hair spells disaster from the start!” thedrybar.com

MODEL BEHAVIOR HAVING TRADED THE STREETS OF WYNDMOOR FOR COUTURE CATWALKS AROUND THE WORLD, SUBURBAN BEAUTY JULIA FLEMING TALKS FASHION, PHILLY, AND PHILANTHROPY.

“I know it sounds crazy, but it felt like fate,” Julia Fleming, 20, says of the moment she was scouted in July 2015. And maybe it was—the Wyndmoor native’s parents had a chance encounter with Next Models president and Philly local Ron Gerald at a nearby Starbucks. With the exchange of a few cell phone pictures and one meeting in New York, this new kid on the Garment District block has conquered some of fashion’s most esteemed catwalks— Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo, Victoria Beckham, Narciso Rodriguez, Vera Wang—in just one season, walking in more than 40 shows last September alone. “That’s when I realized I had really made it and just how impressive [that early success] was,” she says. It’s a long way from Walnut Street’s Urban Outfitters and Free People, where Fleming shopped during high school. But underneath her new designer wardrobe is a huge heart and a cause that she hopes to turn into a career: Fleming works with the Progeria Research Foundation, which raises money and awareness for the rare genetic disease that causes children to age rapidly. “I’ve raised more than $15,000 in over five years,” she says. “I’m so excited to see how modeling can help me as a platform with fundraising.”

“Our Fall 2016 collection was inspired partly by the film Dr. Zhivago,” says Mark Badgley, who, along with James Mischka, form eveningwear label and red-carpet staple Badgley Mischka. “The clothes have a rich, luxurious glamour to them,” he continues, describing pieces like a white and gold metallic gown with floral appliques and sapphire stunners adorned with jewel-toned beadwork. Philadelphia tastemakers can peruse the collection and meet the designers during a Champagne reception at Neiman Marcus’s Couture for a Cure event on September 21, at 11 AM. Proceeds from the event, which is being held in memory of Bucks County native Sheila Engelbach, will benefit Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center Lymphoma Program. Engelbach’s charitable spirit is what inspired Missy Dietz, vice president and general manager of Neiman Marcus at King of Prussia, to choose Badgley Mischka for the occasion. “They believe in giving back and have always been great partners in our philanthropic efforts in the community,” Dietz says. Badgley, who lost his father to cancer at a very young age, shares the same sentiment. “We are 100 percent on board to do anything that we can to help in the fight against cancer.” badgleymischka.com

Here the designer (and man of the world) extols travel and praises supermodel Lily Aldridge, the face of a scintillating new ad campaign. What is it about jet-setting that inspires you? apart from your others? I’ve never done anything with a gourmand touch. I don’t like the idea of a fragrance that smells edible, but then we smelled the final blend and I realized that the gourmand could be really refined when you took something like almond milk, you mixed it with the bergamot, and then you have that pepper in there. I said, “Eureka!” Why did you choose Lily Aldridge for this campaign? She’s obviously very beautiful—but beauty’s not enough. She’s also up for anything, loves to travel, knows music, and is a great mom. I really love that she’s got so many aspects to her personality! Macy’s, 1300 Market St., 215-241-9000; macys.com

“ALL INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE LEVANTE WILL BE THE BEST SELLING MODEL IN THE HISTORY OF MASERATI.” —JOE INNAURATO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MASERATI

Maserati, that century-old, luxury Italian automaker, has released its first SUV to complete its automotive repertoire. Debuting in the US at the New York Automotive Show in March (just after the Philadelphia Auto Show), the new performance SUV is called Levante, named after a warm Mediterranean wind that can turn from a gentle breeze to a potent gust in an instant. In response to a growing number of SUV buyers, the demand for this Maserati is unprecedented, according to Joe Innaurato at F.C. Kerbeck. “All indications are that the Levante will be the best selling model in the history of Maserati,” he predicts, adding that the Philly market should prove to be no exception. The Levante has a Ferrarimanufactured engine, a three-liter, six-cylinder, twin-turbo that can generate speeds over 165 miles per hour. In a true display of Italian allegiance, Maserati teamed up with luxury menswear brand Ermenegildo Zegna once again (the brands have collaborated on other models in the past) to accent the Levante’s interior with silk inserts. The material, produced in a wool mill in Trivero, Italy, adorns seats, door panels, roof lining, and sunshades. Put down the panoramic sunroof and channel those Mediterranean vibes by zipping along Kelly Drive. Think of it as la dolce vita, Philly style. fckerbeckmaserati.com

As scenes from A mArriAge go, it’s hard to top the opening moments of Billions for sheer eye-popping intensity. We don’t know it at first, but the man bound and gagged on the floor in the Showtime series premiere is actually wedded to the leather-bound dominatrix snuffing out a cigarette on his chest. The relationship only heats up from there. Paul Giamatti, 49, plays the guy with the burn hole, who also happens to be United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades. His wife, Wendy, portrayed in thigh-high footwear by Maggie Siff, 42, is more than just his partner in blowing off steam. She’s the in-house shrink and performance coach at Axe Capital, a massive hedge fund that pays her eight times more than her husband makes. Needless to say, Chuck cannot wait to expose Axe and its rakish billionaire CEO, played by Damian Lewis, as corrupt. What a relief that both Giamatti (Sideways, Downton Abbey) and Bryn Mawr graduate Siff (Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men) are vastly more likeable in person than their deliciously despicable characters. The actors recently sat down with Philadelphia Style to talk about the show and the juicy themes it evokes: money, power, sex, greed, and, these days, how to dominate the not-so-small screen in Hollywood. Billions is being acclaimed as one of the best new shows on television, but Chuck and Wendy aren’t exactly easy to take. How do you explain their attraction? Paul Giamatti: They’re two incredibly smart people who are almost too well matched in some weird way. They both love power, they play off each other’s intensity, and they both hunger for success. We’ve dropped into their relationship near the end of something rather than the beginning, though I do think it was loving at one point. It’s a portrait of people hitting a bad spot in a marriage. How they’re going to work it out, I don’t know. But it is certainly a helluva lot of fun to play. Maggie Siff: They’re tough on each other but they’re also very honest. They can be their full selves in a way that’s completely uncensored and unguarded. People like to comment on the sexual element of their relationship as something very dark. But I see it as a testament to their connection. Somewhere along the line, it came up in conversation and they allowed it into the marriage. Behind the scenes, we talk about it being something that Chuck needs in his life, and that Wendy is like, Okay, I can do that. Don’t knock open, honest communication, right? In last season’s finale, Chuck breaks into Wendy’s computer, visits another dominatrix behind her back, and accuses Wendy of being an immoral criminal. Where are things when Billions returns in January? Siff: Season two picks up soon after we left off and you see them regrouping. Wendy’s not at Axe Capital anymore, which makes things complicated for her and Chuck personally and professionally. They’re trying to figure out what to do with themselves. It’s interesting playing a character this conflicted. Something I struggle with occasionally is wanting my characters to be maybe more heroic than they are. I don’t know if every actor struggles with that. I love Wendy and love that she’s so interested in helping people thrive and succeed. My question is always, why not help different kinds of people beyond the hedge fund guys? Can she examine her conscience and ask, “Why only help the super-rich?” Money is practically its own character on Billions—the $60 million beach house, the live-in chefs, the private helicopters. How has inhabiting this world altered your view of the 0.0001 percent? Giamatti: It freaks me out. I’m not going to condemn it, but I do find this level of extreme wealth to be strange and alienating. I’ve got no problem with living well, but you get to a place where enough is enough. In certain circles, though, more is more is more and it never ends. Money makes your

situation better, I’ll tell you that. But I personally don’t tend to spend much of it. I think that’s made my life a lot easier. I’m lucky as hell that I make a decent living, but I think I’m even luckier that I don’t have a taste for speedboats and tailored suits and mansions in the Hamptons. Siff: My feelings haven’t changed at all. I still think it’s bizarre and maybe even a little unhealthy to be rich enough to be a nation-state of your own. At least tell us you enjoyed driving Wendy’s Christmas bonus—the Maserati GranTurismo Sport Coupe, which retails for around $132,000. Siff: To be honest, it’s like getting on a thoroughbred for the first time. You’re like, Whoa! What is this? I only got to drive in a parking lot, unfortunately. And here’s the scary thing: Not only are you driving an extraordinarily expensive car, but they also strap on the most expensive camera equipment to the windshield and you’re barely able to see the road. What I’m saying is, it wasn’t the most romantic driving experience. Paul, you won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing John Adams in the 2008 TV miniseries of the same name. Which is the most cutthroat—Washington, Wall Street, or Hollywood? Giamatti: All three worlds have colorful characters and a high degree of ambition, backstabbing, and all that. I think the political and financial people tend to play things a little more low-key and hidden. That’s not to say you don’t have maverick characters who come up, like the guy who’s running for president. But Hollywood, I think, is the most out-there when it comes to flaunting success and spreading gossip and who’s got the biggest, you know, office. What’s your take on awards season? Giamatti: As an experience, awards ceremonies are truly exciting but also complete mayhem. I’m always amazed people don’t have epileptic seizures with the camera lights flashing in their eyes. If Billions wins an award now or in the future, that would be great, but honestly, the awards and the job we do are completely separate. You never, ever enter a scene thinking, Oh, this is my Emmy moment. You think, This is a great story, these are phenomenal actors I’m working with, and it’s just fantastic to be making a living in this profession. You get an award and you’re like, Wow, this is an amazing unexpected bonus. We’ve talked about success, but what are the worst jobs you’ve ever had? Siff: For about a month in my 20s, I worked at a hedge fund for real. A friend of mine was dating a guy who was a banker, and he gave me a temp job. I had no clue what I was doing. I would sit in front of these Bloomberg computer terminals and bullshit my way through the day so hard it was scary. And while there’s a high degree of glamour in the world of hedge funds we depict on the show, this was pretty basic: a lot less swag and a lot more khakis and plaid. Giamatti: I’ve done so much weird stuff as an actor. I once had to do an entire movie [the 2006 indie film The Hawk Is Dying] with a hawk strapped to my arm. I remember driving in the enclosed cab of a truck down a highway in Florida with the bird screaming out and its claws going after my face. That was way more dangerous than bringing down billionaires. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Siff: I take it easy. My husband and I live in New York, where I grew up, and we have a 2-year-old. I was pretty tired after the season and wanted to catch the last of my daughter’s babyhood. It’s going really, really fast. As far as guilty pleasures, I’m pretty nerdy. A night alone, I like to eat ice cream and watch BBC’s Call the Midwife. Giamatti: I’m embarrassed to admit that I never watch television. I know I’m missing out. But I love to read and see theater. I took my son to Hamilton, which was incredible, of course, and we got to meet the cast, who were weirdly excited to say hello because they wanted to meet another founding father. Okay, finally, what really happens during a sex scene? Siff: In general on the show, we do everything we can to lighten things up. Paul and I call each other Buck and Cindy, and our version of Cindy is spelled X-I-N-D-E-E. Damian loves singing show tunes around the set. When the cameras roll on the sex stuff, it’s all a total illusion. I’m standing there in six-inch stilettos attempting to look hot but desperately trying not to fall on my ass. Giamatti: For me, it’s interesting. Being tied up made me really relaxed to the point where I kept falling asleep. At one point, Maggie had to use a low-voltage prod on me, which nobody knew how to operate. I’m falling asleep and she’s tickling me with the thing by really pressing it into me. But then she kinda runs it lightly from my navel up to my chest and it shocks the living hell out of me. After that, I was wide awake. She didn’t try it again.

As cofounder of one of the world’s most successful beauty brands, Moroccanoil’s Carmen Tal is a force of nature. Here, she reveals how creating a line of iconic hair, body, and sun products has evolved into a mission to inspire other women. by JIll SIer aCkI

an inspired life

well-traveled Carmen Tal (opposite page), cofounder of Moroccanoil, draws upon her travels around the world, including to the Beldi Country Club in Morocco (shown here), to fire her imagination for new products and ideas. The recently released fragrance Fleur de Rose was inspired by flowers Tal admired in France.

It started wIth just a basIc need—Carmen Tal, today the cofounder of Moroccanoil, was visiting relatives in Israel when a bad color process damaged her hair. Disappointed, she accompanied a friend to a salon in Tel Aviv, where a hairstylist used an oil treatment to both condition and style Tal’s hair. According to Tal, “The results were like, Wow!” Tal, a former salon owner herself who had also worked in the fashion industry, brought the product back home to Canada, where she started using it in her personal beauty regimen. She shared it with friends, colleagues, and her hairstylist. And as each reported the same impressive results—nourished, beautiful hair—she became convinced she had to distribute this oil on a larger stage. It took Tal six months to persuade her then husband, Ofer, a business executive who spoke Hebrew, that they needed to make this treatment oil their next venture. Initially, the couple started by just securing North American distribution rights, but when their success outpaced the company’s level of production, Tal bought the company outright and launched what is today the multimillion-dollar brand Moroccanoil.

Looking back, Tal admits it was no cake walk. “What we faced most was the negativity of people,” she says of those early days. “The thing for me was mostly people saying, ‘Don’t bring something with oil.’ ‘Don’t bring anything with glass because it’s going to break, it’s going to make a mess.’ Or, ‘Why do you do something with hair—that’s [a] saturated [category]?’ That was the challenge. We just said, ‘Okay, if we fail, we fail.’ You don’t always have a guarantee that things are going to be successful. But we were lucky.” “Lucky” might be the understatement of the century. The gamechanging success of Moroccanoil in an industry notorious for fickleness and fads could well be attributed to some luck, but the stunning growth and longevity of the brand is directly proportional to Tal’s tenacity, dedication, inspiration, and vision. Since the company launched less than a decade ago, Moroccanoil has ignited a passion (some would say obsession) in North America for argan oil, a rich elixir that’s harvested from kernels inside the fruit of Moroccan argan trees. In a labor-intensive process, Berber women crack open the argan nut to obtain the kernels, which are ground to extract the pure, unfiltered oil, which is then left to settle so any impurities sink to the bottom and can be removed. The resulting oil can be used for food (much the same way olive oil is) as well as a moisturizer for the face and hair. Argan oil is one of the main efficacious ingredients in the company’s cornerstone Moroccanoil Treatment and the signature ingredient across the entire product line, and spawned shelves of me-too merchandise. According to industry researcher Mintel, 29 products using argan oil launched in 2008; in 2012, it was 588. Meanwhile, researcher NPD Group has seen US department store sales of products featuring argan oil increase by more than 200 percent. “It actually doesn’t bother me anymore,” says Tal of the flood of argan oil products that fill shelves everywhere from high-end department stores to the local drugstore—even big-box stores like Costco. “Now I’m so confident that being the first, being the pioneer, and continuing to bring products of the highest quality, nobody will ever take that place. No matter how many other products come out, we’re still going to be

“I’m so confident that being the first, being the pioneer, and continuing to bring products of the highest quality, nobody will ever take that place.” white, black, red—there wasn’t much diversity in the marketplace.” Since then, the company has grown exponentially, both in size and in scope, and is now available in over 65 countries and has also experienced tremendous growth in the travel retail/ duty-free category around the world. Tal relocated to New York (Moroccanoil also maintains offices in Montreal, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo), and they have expanded their offerings, from just the treatment oil—which found fans in celebrities such as Madonna, Emily Blunt, and Bar Refaeli—to a range of hair products, including a new texture collection featuring a Dry Texture Spray, made with a special blend of volcanic mineral zeolite and high-performance resins, as well as the unisex styler Texture Clay, which blends argan oil with cosmetic-grade bentonite clay and nourishing shea butter for a silky texture with shapeable hold. A surprising addition to the hair collection, Tal introduced spa-quality Moroccanoil Body skincare treatments, including an exfoliating body scrub—which features a unique blend of argan, sesame, grape seed, avocado, and sweet almond oils to nourish the skin—cleansing bar, shower milk, body butter, body soufflé, and hand cream. Says Tal, “The development of the Moroccanoil Body collection was a natural next step for us, as

108  phillystylemag.com

we wanted to satisfy our consumer’s desire for luxurious treatments that not only transform the hair, but the body as well.” In 2015, two enticing and exotic fragrances were added: Fleur d’Oranger, a rich orange blossom scent that Tal says “is good enough to eat” and was inspired by her time in Spain; and Fleur de Rose, sparked by a garden of roses Tal spotted during a trip to France. The Moroccanoil Sun collection was launched the same year. “Argan oil is an incredible gift of nature, a natural sun protector, so it was an obvious choice for us to launch a Sun line,” says Tal. “We have always been inspired by the Mediterranean, and our Sun collection reminds me of when I was a teen, and going to the beach with my friends feeling happy and relaxed.” “I find that when I travel is when I have the time to discover, and I have the time to observe and see what else is happening,” she adds. “I’m not a creative person, but I know what I like. And then I interpret it in my own way.” Later this year, the company plans to announce its next generation of yet-to-be-revealed haircare products. “Trends are changing,” says Tal. “We try to come up with one or two big launches every year, or we formulate something—like [when] a new ingredient has come up in the market and we need to adjust—so we constantly are reinventing ourselves.” But most importantly for Tal is her holistic commitment to her customers. As well as inspiring women to look and feel their best, Tal is dedicated to helping them fulfill their personal potential and make their dreams a reality by empowering them to discover beauty in a new light—through the power of inspiration. With this at the forefront of her vision for her brand, and realizing the power of inspiration to move us to action, Moroccanoil announced its

With that in mind, Tal has made giving back to women’s causes a vital part of Moroccanoil’s corporate mission. Launched in fall 2014, the company’s Inspired By Women™ initiative first explored the work of five influential women in a film series directed by actress Bryce Dallas Howard and introduced by supermodel and ambassador Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. the original. It’s not just about being an argan oilinfused brand; it’s much more than that. I think we are special.” At the time of Moroccanoil’s debut, it wasn’t just what was inside the bottle that was unique. The scent (a distinct and delicious aroma the company calls Fragrance Originale), the eye-catching apothecary-esque glass bottles, the elegantly designed labels—everything about Moroccanoil heralded something entirely new and different from anything available in the marketplace. Still, with only one product—the now iconic Moroccanoil Treatment—Tal needed to rely on grassroots marketing to get it into the right hands. Bottles were given away to hairdressers, stylists, influencers, and editors—anyone who could spread the word about what she believed was the new beauty essential. “It was very different than most of the beauty products of the time,” recalls Tal, noting the signature aqua and orange packaging, the blue culled from an image of an ocean seen in a fashion print ad. “Seven, eight years ago, most of the packages were

It only takes one moment of inspiration to ignite positive change.” The program’s first five honorees were highlighted in a digital short film series, directed by actress and filmmaker Bryce Dallas Howard. Women featured in the series included trailblazers such as Rebecca Welsh, founder of The HALO organization, which helps homeless and at-risk youth heal and create a future through art therapy, and Allyson Ahlstrom, who provides cool clothes to kids in need across the country through her philanthropic Threads for Teens. “We’re extremely proud through Inspired By Women™ to feature powerful stories of passionate and courageous women who take confidence, compassion, and strength to a whole new level,” says Tal. “We hope their incredibly moving stories and accomplishments will serve as the catalyst that inspires all women to let go of their fears, take a chance, and realize their dreams. When you empower women, the sky’s the limit!” Most recently, the Inspired By Women™ program honored Marchesa designer and cofounder Georgina Chapman, who works with the organization The Magic Bus Foundation, a nonprofit that aims to lift communities in India out of poverty by providing education, sanitation, and mentoring efforts. It’s an organization close to Chapman’s heart as generations of her family have lived in India, and much of the artisanal embroidery and craftsmanship for which her designer gowns are known comes from these regions. Says Tal, “As we only just launched

“Most of the women who inspire me are the women who are not afraid to be women—women that are strong, women that have an identity of their own, and who go for whatever they believe in.” our newest film with Georgina Chapman, our goal is to ensure it touches as many lives as possible. As for the next film, we are looking towards a 2017 launch. It would be amazing, should the stars be aligned, to continue working with Bryce Dallas Howard. She has been such an integral part of the project, and is an extraordinary visionary and filmmaker, not to mention an incredibly inspiring woman herself!” “I always see us as goddesses,” continues the petite Tal, whose soft-spokenness belies her self-confidence and steely determination. “I think [women] should rule the world. We become mothers. And if we, as women, take seriously the responsibility of raising responsible human beings, this world would be a much better place. And by encouraging and empowering women to find themselves and teach them all these things, in 100 years we’ll have a much better place to live. People all over the world have been so moved by the stories of our Inspired By Women™ nominees. I think I’m most proud of the countless lives we have been able to touch through the initiative—and hopefully not only to inspire, but also empower other women to make their own dreams a reality.”

MAIN LINE STYLE EVENT

The Radnor Hunt is best known for being where the blue-blooded horsey set bands together to don their best reds and chase foxes up and down Chester County’s bucolic rolling hills. But come September, the sound of stomping will make way for the sweet purring of some of the world’s priciest and most envy-inducing cars at the 20th annual Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance, September 9-11. Like the more understated sister of the versions held at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island (sans the ocean and golf course), the three-day event is part car lover’s dream, part Main Line social scene.

116  phillystylemag.com

Besides the my-motor-isbigger-than-yours auto competition between the country’s biggest car collectors—with a focus on this year’s marques Lancia and the 300SL Mercedes-Benz—there’s also a 150-car road rally and a black-tie gala. And if you’re okay with slumming it, you can drive your Rolls into the backfield for some tailgating (all catered, naturally). But don’t get any ideas about taking the cars for a spin. “Even the judges can’t touch the cars,” says Mike Tillson, chairman and founder of the Radnor Hunt Concours. “At $30 million for a Ferrari, it’s probably not a good idea.” radnorconcours.org

When discerning shoppers browse the 155,000-squarefoot expansion at the King of Prussia Mall, they’ll not only find wares from some of the top designers in the world, but they’ll have some choice dining options from a few familiar Philly names to keep them fueled. None is more recognizable than affable Top Chef Kevin Sbraga, who is opening a second outpost of his Southern-themed University City spot The Fat Ham (sbragadining.com) at the mall. “I can remember growing up in New Jersey as a kid, it was always a big treat to go out to King of Prussia for the day,” he says. “It’s very exciting for me to expand The Fat Ham

brand at a place that is not only iconic for amazing shopping, but a location that holds a special place in my heart.” Designed to be reminiscent of a clean, small-scale barn (think more thoroughbred, less chicken coop), The Fat Ham evokes a feeling that’s more King Street in Charleston than King of Prussia, with whitewashed walls lining the room and red-stained rafters draped with string lights giving off a decidedly barbecue vibe. Which is apropos, since the food is pure Southern comfort: Pair up some shrimp and grits, collard greens, and brisket sliders with The Fat Ham’s renowned whiskey,

“it’s always been a dream of mine to have a davio’s in king of prussia.” —steve difillippo bourbon, and rye selection. For an upscale Northern Italian culinary adventure beyond the mall walls, head down the road to the new King of Prussia Town Center, slated to open later this fall, where you’ll find Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse (davios.com), a Center City staple for 16 years. “It’s always been a dream of mine to have a Davio’s in King of Prussia. I just love that area,” says chef/owner Steve DiFillippo. “I can’t believe the time has finally arrived to open.” Sit on the patio and listen to live music chiming in from the lifestyle center’s square while you sample some of their famous Philly cheesesteak spring rolls and sautéed branzino, or go classic Davio’s with the massive 30-ounce rib eye. Back at the mall, four new restaurants are dishing out casual dining that’s anything but typical food-court fare. Shoppers in search of a good burger and fries combo can stop by Shake Shack (shake shack.com) to munch on perennial favorites like a ’Shroom Burger, Chick’n Stack, or Shack-cago Dog. And to top the meal off with a touch of sweetness, try out the custard flavor of the day (recent varieties

have included Stumptown Coffee Cardamom and Matcha Citrus). For something lighter, check out the rapidly expanding Hai Street Kitchen & Co. (haistreet kitchen.com), the Philly-based home of the sushi burrito. The fast-casual concept is pretty simple—guests pick a protein, fillings, and sauce, then decide if they want it wrapped in a burrito, in a bowl, or in a salad. Philly commuters who regularly trek to New York will recognize Nicoletta Pizzeria (nicolettapizza.com) and Melt Shop (meltshop.com), both Manhattan transplants featuring artisanal comfort foods. Helmed by Michelinstarred chef Michael White, Nicoletta serves up crispy hot slices and handmade pastas as well as standout soft-serve fior di latte gelato that can be topped with salted rum caramel sauce or rosemary caramel popcorn. For more cheesy goodness, grilled cheese is elevated to gourmet proportions at Melt Shop. One bite into a Truffle Melt with Muenster cheese and truffle oil on fresh-baked sourdough bread, or tater tots smothered in cheese, and you’ll never go back to boring American on white. We promise.

HOME FURNISHINGS HAVEN STUDIO 882 AMPS UP ITS SUPER-SIZED NEW SHOWROOM WITH EVEN MORE LUXE LABELS.

From its new, larger address in Glen Mills, Studio 882 now features even more designer furnishings from brands like Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren, and Baker.

It was shortly after Chad and Katie Groves opened their homefurnishings store Studio 882 in 2013 that the husband-and-wife design team were faced with a very good problem: They were quickly outgrowing their 3,500-square-foot space in Chadds Ford. Three years later, they’ve got plenty of room to stretch out in a new 13,000-squarefoot showroom in Glen Mills. “We wanted to represent our brands better,” explains Katie. “Now we’re able to fit so much more on the floor and offer even more inspiration to our clients.” That inspiration can be found in new-to-Studio lines from Kate Spade and Ralph Lauren, plus expanded sections for window treatments, home accessories, and designer fabrics. Bestsellers like The Kara Mann Collection for Milling Road and Mary McDonald for Chaddock (McDonald is scheduled to make a special appearance at the store on September 15 with new pieces in tow) anchor Studio 882’s swelling designer list, which caters to every budget. Though the Pantone Color of the Year 2016 was jointly awarded to Rose Quartz and Serenity—a first for the global color authority—Katie says brown is big for fall. “A warm brown in wood tones complements grays, blacks, and whites,” she says. “It works well for a glamorous family room—or, as I call it, a glamly room.” studio-882.com

“our work has a warmth that comes from each piece being worked on by hand.” —kevin o’brien

Kevin O’Brien was just a university student studying architecture when his boutique-brand, hand-painted scarves were picked up by Barneys. Fast forward 20 years, and he’s an unmistakable force in home décor: Celebrities like Bruce Springsteen and Gisele Bündchen tuck into his bedding at night, and Saks Fifth Avenue, Anthropologie, and Neiman Marcus all carry his namesake line of pillows, curtains, bedding, and throws. But don’t be fooled by O’Brien’s luxe global aesthetic—everything is designed right here in Philly. “Most people complain about pieces being too cold, too plain, too simple. Our work has contemporary elements and a warmth that comes from each

piece being worked on by hand,” says O’Brien, walking through his fabric-filled South Broad Street studio. The artisan opened a second studio in Nepal in 2006, where he says handmade techniques like weaving, dyeing, and embroidery are unparalleled. His company now sells to luxury retailers in 49 states and 10 countries and “does as well in Oklahoma as we do in Beverly Hills.” This fall, he turns his attention back to where it all began: accessories, with his new collection of patterned scarves now available at the Art Museum gift shop. Says O’Brien: “Efficiency is not the ultimate goal—the goal is to create something that provides delight.” kevinobrienstudio.com

Up, Up, and away Brewerytown makes a Big comeBack thanks to a new residential address, and the rittenhouse deButs a collection of chic suites.

From homegrown breweries to the ever-expanding Philly Beer Week each June, Philly’s love affair with all things beer is no secret; credit that in part to the more than 700 breweries that once dotted North Philadelphia. Now that neighborhood, known as Brewerytown, is experiencing a comeback thanks to rapid development. The

126  phillystylemag.com

most high-profile project is the new The Fairmount @ Brewerytown (fairmount btown.com), located at 1363 N. 31st Street in a former commercial warehouse on newly revitalized Girard Avenue. Housing 161 units in studio, one- and two-bedroom options, the loft-style apartments feature 21 unique floor plans. The building is pet-friendly, offering a

rooftop dog park that borders a spacious deck and pool. Dana Spain, managing partner at McSpain Properties, cites Brewerytown’s affordability and accessibility as the reason for the neighborhood’s sizzle “It’s minutes from Center City and University City, and within walking distance from Fairmount, all without the

rental rates of other neighborhoods,” she says. The Fairmont honors historic Brewerytown with American pub-style restaurant The Crafthouse, located inside the building, which serves seasonal craft brews and dishes prepared by celebrity chef and longtime Philadelphian Brian Duffy. Proving that luxury has no bounds, one of Philly’s

leading hotels has upped the extravagance on its accommodations. The Rittenhouse Hotel’s new R floor (rittenhousehotel.com) is a 15-room redesign of the hotel’s top level, including 11 suites all overlooking iconic Rittenhouse Square. The room aesthetic, a blend of modern and classic styles, was planned by renowned interior designer

Planned for completion next fall, Gluckman Tang Architects has been charged with expanding the building to bring it up-to-date with its neighboring facilities. In addition, Andropogon Associates designed a campus green space named the Korman Quadrangle to improve campus atmosphere and connectivity. “This project presents an opportunity to engage and enhance the heart of the Drexel campus,” says Dana Tang, partner at Gluckman Tang Architects. “Our design aspires to give new life to the public face of the Korman Center by projecting openness and transparency and creating dynamic, day-lit interior spaces that connect with an active front porch on the Korman Quad.”

If you think personal style doesn’t influence home décor, guess again. Maria ViolaKuttruff, of Viola Interior Design in Merion and president of American Society of Interior Designers Pennsylvania East Chapter, has formulated many a floor plan just by sizing up a client’s wardrobe. For a Philadelphia wealthmanagement office, ViolaKuttruff—whose role as regional head of ASID is to spread the word about design—found inspiration in a suit jacket. “My client had his jacket hanging on the back of a chair in his office,” she says. “It was conservative looking but very tailored.” The resulting scheme—a darker color palette with clean, masculine touches—was spot on for the corporate environment. Fashion and furnishings are constantly colliding (just look at the number of fashion designers touting home interiors collections or teaming up with existing brands for collaborations), and this fall, many of the season’s hottest runway looks are finding their way into homes in the form of subtle detailing, Viola-Kuttruff says. The same boho fringe dripping from clothing and accessories is now adding new interest to contemporary seating styles while tassels, currently adorning earrings and necklaces, are reappearing on window coverings, tie-back seating cushions, and even bar cabinets.

The accent shelves of an entryway foyer (LEFT) have a natureinspired feel, like the accessories spotted at Oscar de la Renta Fall 2016 at New York Fashion Week (INSET).

In a pop-culture-meetsdécor moment, bar carts are back and especially popular with both millennial men and women thanks to ’60s-set Mad Men, she says. Mixed metals have been trending in jewelry with layered looks of gold, silver, and rose-gold accessories. The same aesthetic can also be spotted in contemporary interiors, with an emphasis on balancing shiny and matte finishes. Accent tables are one simple way to make the trend work at home, says Viola-Kuttruff. One of fall’s biggest trends is leopard, with designers from Givenchy to Anna Sui, Prada, and Dolce

& Gabbana using the notice-me pattern as a kind of neutral. “Leopard is really never out of style,” says Viola-Kuttruff, adding that when incorporated into the home in a tasteful way— think luxe carpeting or textiles—the look can easily stand the test of time. Interior design often hinges on adding several layers to a room, but Viola-Kuttruff says parting with furnishings and accents is essential. “[With design], editing down is just as important as putting pieces into a space. It’s sort of like when Coco Chanel said to take one thing off before leaving the house.” violainteriordesign.com

This fall, the design focus is all about entertaining. “There’s been this evolution in the market,” says Gold. “People want to entertain more at home— to have a home that’s a little bit dressier but still comfortable.” To that end, the company introduces three surefire cocktail-party

conversation starters: a shimmering brass and acrylic bar cart ($1,870), a curved chaise in deep teal ($3,060), and a slipcovered sectional (from $8,552; above) that can be pushed together or apart for myriad seating options. The new pieces roll out the perfect start to the season, as folks begin to head indoors and

plan their holiday soirées. Also new: the company’s first customizable luxury drapery collection. “We’re always looking for different ways to expand what we’re offering,” says Williams. “This is just a natural extension of what we do.” Host Interiors, 7908 Germantown Ave., 215-9671196; mgbwhome.com

HIDDEN TREASURES

The sitting room at 309 S. Third Street is bathed in natural light and filled with original design details.

Wide-eyed tourists flock to Society Hill’s historic mansions, dreaming of elegant parties and gracious living. Ten years ago, when the Philly-born owner of 309 S. Third Street began house-hunting in the neighborhood, she, too, longed for the well proportioned rooms of the Physick House and the charming gardens of the Powel. But when her real estate agent urged her to step inside a certain very old (circa 1835), very large (9,000-square-foot) home, she balked at its broken shutters and dirty windows. Still, “it only took me a few steps inside before I said, ‘This is my house,’” she recalls. “It was like opening a present. There was no electricity but I knew as soon as I saw this majestic hallway with these two grand rooms off to the side.” The owner couldn’t immediately get a sense of the dramatic plaster ceiling medallions and crown moldings that were hidden under layers of paint, but she could readily appreciate the other assets of this residential gem, like 14-foothigh ceilings, original pine floors, and pocket doors. Built as a boarding house for sailors, the five-bedroom, seven-bath (including four full) house had received only one major renovation, a 1960s project that added welcome improvements like HVAC updates, an elevator, and a large extension. A handpainted mural by French wallpaper maker Zuber et Cie was a bonus; the design is a duplicate of Scenes of North America, which was chosen by Jacqueline Kennedy for the White House, and remains on the walls of the Diplomatic Reception Room to this day.

A sweeping central staircase rises the full four floors of the home. below: The splendid Clive Christian kitchen features a casual dining area which overlooks the home’s formal garden.

Still, there was much to be done. Under the guidance of Princetonbased interior designer Judie Nemeth, an 18-month renovation restored the house’s original details, while gutting outdated rooms like kitchens and baths. “This is such a big house so I really wanted to warm it up,” Nemeth says of the sunny coral and yellow palette—courtesy of luxe Scalamandre and Brunschwig & Fils fabrics and historic paints—that still freshens the formal living room and dining rooms. A mix of antiques (a stately grandfather clock here, crystal chandeliers from the 1800s there) and meticulous reproductions add rich Federal-era accents. For the updated kitchen, the owner chose the creamy white of Clive

Christian’s Victorian line, which features Carrara marble countertops, dainty blue and white tile backsplashes, and comfy touches like a built-in window seat now favored by the family cat, Biscuit. New windows—a total of 49 were installed throughout the home— share views of the expansive backyard. “This is a great house for entertaining,” she says. “Parties move from the front rooms to the kitchen, then into the garden.” Once outside, not only are guests treated to verdant splendors, but a full light and sound system keeps the party going—and flowers chosen for scent (camellias, roses, lilacs, and gardenias) add to the heady experience. shelves from locally based cabinetmakers Rossi Brothers highlight the library. Here, as sunlight streams through French doors, the owner likes to curl up on a chocolatebrown leather sofa, sip coffee, and read the morning papers. In the evening, a chandelier that once hung in New York’s famed Russian Tea Room offers a warm glow. A half-landing up, the amazing master bedroom suite awaits, outfitted with his-and-her walk-ins and a huge Clive Christian bathroom clad in statutory marble and featuring a steam shower, whirlpool bath, and one of several fireplaces found throughout the house. Various guest bedrooms, children’s rooms, and a small office complete the home. From top (a solarium, curving marble-top bar, and large entertainment area tucked under the roof) to bottom (a playroom, sauna, and gym in the 2,000-squarefoot basement), the amenities are endless. This young family will miss them all when they move to a new high-rise a few blocks away, but their continued presence in Society Hill has been paramount. “For us, this is the perfect neighborhood: Everything we want is here,” she says. “That was something we weren’t willing to give up.” For more information contact Fred Anthony Manfred; maryonthesquare.com

PhiladelPhia PhotograPher Phil ramer reveals his favorite city settings for frame-worthy wedding Photos. By Connie Capone

For professional wedding photographer Phil Kramer, the secret to his trade is knowing what’s going to happen before it happens. “I know my equipment, know the light, anticipate the shot, and watch it unfold.” Kramer—the CEO, founder, and director of photography for Remark Weddings—has worked as a photographer in Philadelphia for 30 years and has shot more than 3,000 weddings. It’s no surprise, then, that his favorite settings span the city and suburbs. “No location is as iconic as the street shot of City Hall, with bride and groom standing on an island surrounded by cars and towering skyscrapers,” he says. “A lesser-known backdrop is the Painted Bride Art Center in Old City, where a couple can pose in front of the building’s colorful mosaic of glass and metals.” Getting the right outdoor shot can mean traversing through natural settings—Kramer is particularly fond of Longwood Gardens, which offers an infinite amount of breathtaking shots with over 1,000 acres of land—so he requests that brides bring walking shoes to the shoot. For inclement weather, Kramer recommends a spot under the Benjamin Franklin Bridge: “You are covered by the bridge in case of rain, while the architecture, colors, and shadows create something truly spectacular.” remarkweddings.com

The steps of the Art Museum, with City Hall rising in the background, make for one of the city’s most iconic places for wedding photos.

The evenT Maestro Now settled iNto his New storefroNt, weddiNg plaNNer to the philly stars Bria appra talks fall florals, good lightiNg, aNd why you should be choosy with chairs.

From ballroom weddings to Ball on the Square, Brian Kappra’s event production and design firm Evantine, which just relocated to a chic new Center City storefront, has worked its magic all over town for decades. Here, Kappra shares a few priceless planning ideas. Best Buds

One of Kappra’s top planning tips is to gauge “party light.” Those dusky lighting schemes that perfectly set the mood for receptions can also majorly alter certain colors. “One bride chose gorgeous lavender seating cushions that looked brown,” he says. Kappra tests out hues with mock “party lights” at Evantine’s Southwest Philly design studio. take a seat

Kappra has amassed a sample of nearly every chair that every Philly venue stocks so couples can assess on the spot—and 99 percent of brides will opt to bring in their own, he says. Kappra suggests mixing it up, like “two styles of Lucite chairs for dinner or different chairs for the wedding and the reception.” evantinedesign.com

Smaller bouquets are still popular among brides, but roses have been replaced by bolder blooms like gardenias, peonies, and orchids. And don’t be afraid to mix up the color palette, advises Kappra. “The bride may carry totally different florals than the bridesmaids or chose a colorful mixed bouquet while her bridesmaids stay neutral,” he says.

Ritzy Business Thanks To a mulTimillion-dollar renovaTion, The Ritz-CaRlton sTill reigns as one of Philly’s mosT jaw-droPPing wedding sPaces.

With its grand architecture and prime address on the Avenue of the Arts, the Ritz CarltonPhiladelphia has long reigned as one of the city’s hottest wedding venues. Now the storied property has ushered in a new era of picture-perfect portraits following a yearlong multimillion-dollar renovation. “As the only luxury branded hotel in the city, we offer a one-of-a-kind experience for weddings,” says Bradley Pacana, director of sales and marketing. “The updated spaces create a warm environment and color palette to work alongside each individual wedding vision.” The $24 million-dollar project pays tribute to the historic aspects of the hotel, constructed in 1908. In addition to the column-filled

lobby and its expanded bar and restaurant, Aqimero, guest rooms and both ballrooms have gotten a contemporary makeover as well. “Our grand chandelier and oculus allow couples a first dance under the moonlight,” notes Pacana. “It’s an experience you can’t get anywhere else.” Chef Patrick Morrison’s updated seasonal menus complement any time of year; couples (and up to six guests) have the chance to meet with the chef during a complimentary tasting. Having a large wedding? Opt to rent out the entire hotel lobby for a cocktail reception. As a first-anniversary gift from the hotel, couples can relive the magic with a onenight stay and dinner. That beats the traditional paper gift any day. ritzcarlton.com

What’s Old is New The reimagined Hyatt at tHe Bellevue’s cenTury-old grandeur is picTure-perfecT for proper brides.

Philadelphia is riddled with iconic landmarks, all of which are ideal backdrops for any city wedding—and Hyatt at The Bellevue, housed in a building that dates back to 1904, is no exception. The hotel recently unveiled a multimilliondollar renovation that

balances traditional and contemporary influences; conceived by Marguerite Rodgers Interior Design, the hotel’s guest rooms, lobby, and front entrance all received a facelift, and each floor takes guests through a historical journey courtesy of fanciful sketches and

art,” says General Manager Pina Purpero. The property’s pair of ballrooms remain as stunning as ever: The Rose Garden Ballroom is ideal for more intimate weddings, while the Grand Ballroom features original lighting designed by Thomas Edison and

the stately marble and hand-worked iron elliptical staircase. During receptions, couples can enjoy a new small-plates menu from chef Richard Hebben, featuring dishes like flat iron steak and roasted pork belly. philadelphia bellevue.hyatt.com

The bride and groom may be the main attraction, but when it comes to modernday weddings, couples are pulling out all the stops with a spectacle of entertainment for their receptions. Making your wedding stand out is easier than you think—if you step (far) outside the box. A band or DJ is a staple entertainment choice, but have you thought about... fire dancers? “Weddings are a time for brides and grooms to share their unique style and personality with family and friends,” says Shana Kennedy, director of the Philadelphia School of Circus Acts (philly circus.com). In addition to classes,

PSCA has performed all over the city for special events. “With so many weddings happening in non-traditional settings these days, [this] takes their event to new heights and gives guests something to talk about.” Under the PSCA umbrella is Airplay, a circus and variety entertainment company that has talent ranging from jugglers to aerial artists. Think hula-hoop dancers greeting your guests or cocktails served by stilt walkers at the reception. performers is all in a day’s work. “We once had a bride ask us to paint the entire waitstaff at her wedding venue in silver body paint; another requested to have a mermaid serve sushi during her cocktail hour,” says Julie Abramson, owner of Jewelz Entertainment. “A recently popular request is to have an aerial bartender, suspended from the ceiling, serving guests Champagne.” For these brides and grooms, as Abramson says, it’s all about the “wow” factor. “They want their guests to have a great time and be fully entertained.”

For wedding keepsakes that are truly worth keeping, many couples are calling on artists like Courtney Sell, a Temple graduate that honed her sketching skills during stints at the Philadelphia Zoo and Citizens Bank Park. Her Caricatures by Courtney (caricaturesbycourtney.com) will live draw your guests— or any aspect of your wedding—for a frameworthy favor that people will remember long after the big day. “I’ve heard on almost every occasion people say, ‘I would have never thought of this, it’s so different,’” says Sell. “It’s definitely something they are going to remember.”

“Floral wreaths are perfect for the bohemian bride who wants a romantic, outdoorsy vibe,” says Alexey Kats, owner of Architeqt Salon (achiteqtsalon.com). But whether you are saying “I do” in a garden or inside a ballroom, it’s important to keep your hair simple. “The floralwreath bride is popular nowadays because she wants an effortless, shabby chic style,” says Gabrielle Mancano, stylist and bridal team member at Calista Grand Salon and Spa (calistagrand.com). “To achieve this, I would set the hair with beachy waves, nothing too ‘done’ looking.”

A bridal braid can be tailored to match every bride’s style, but goes best with a mermaid gown, says Richel D’Ambra, owner of Richel D’Ambra Spa & Salon (richeldambra.com). “Fit and flare gowns with an open back work great,” says D’Ambra. “Braids can also can be enhanced with flowers or any other type of accent jewelry

Sparkling accessories fit best for the classic bride with a vision of a fairytale wedding. “Diamond-studded accessories such as tiaras, rhinestone headbands, or combs can enhance a more formal ball gown,” says D’Ambra. And to complement a stunning hairpiece, opt for a traditional updo. “They look great next to a chignon or a sleek, sweptover-the-shoulder style,” adds Kats. “Make sure to look for pieces that are malleable and can be pinned into the hair without weighing it down.” Curl Power

“Romantic curls will never go out of style,” says Mancano. “They transform your everyday look into something stylish and sophisticated.” The biggest bonus for this hairstyle is that it works with every type of wedding. “It’s a more natural look that can be paired with almost any dress and venue,” says Kats. “For the hair to keep its wave throughout the night the key is to lock the curl in with the proper heat and hairspray that has memory but doesn’t turn crispy.”

“Aerosmith always had a little country in them, but this solo album is my trip. As far as stand-out moments, where creating as Aerosmith was concerned, ‘Dream On’— that’s mine forever. around us; it’s the beauty of coming down here and working with a bunch of country folks. I’m a country boy now. I just bought a house here so I’m living in Nashville full-on, which is a musical mecca. It was very scary in the beginning, but I started writing with people and within two months, I got five of the greatest songs I’ve

ever written or been part of writing. I don’t know what it is that runs through Nashville—I think it’s in the water. I think I’ve done some of my best work through this country head. Going country has been risky, but I love living through risks--especially when you aren’t thinking about it, you just do it. It’s what I love to do.”
