maxing and relaxing find beauty and fun times in southampton with MaxiM magazine publisher and group media president Dan Ragone.

“I travel from Manhattan to the Hamptons as often as I can, it’s such a great escape. I didn’t know anything of the Hamptons when I started coming out eight years ago. Being from Florida, I wanted a real beach town and a relaxing place to visit. “I searched and found a

house in Southampton that fit what I was looking for. At the time, I was working at Elle Décor and I wanted a project to work on. I’m into interiors and design, and it was a fun challenge to have a beach home with a different look and feel from my Chelsea apartment.

“When I arrive, I usually don’t leave the house. I like to fill it with friends and spend time together by the pool. I have surrounded myself with a creative and fun group of people, and try to reflect that atmosphere in my photos. “When I do go out, one

of my favorite spots is Sant Ambroeus for coffee in the late afternoon after the sun goes down. I can’t say that I have a favorite town. Each has its own charm and personality. I can go from Montauk to East Hampton to Hampton Bays and find cool places to enjoy.”

.

“I wanted a real beach town and a relaxing place to visit,” says Florida native Dan Ragone about first discovering the Hamptons.

There’s nothing more enticing than a fashion love affair, when designer meets muse and gorgeous gowns are created in the process. That’s the heart of the matter between Hamptons cover stars Heidi Klum and Zac Posen. Their love of the Hamptons, sizzling summers out East, and their adorable crush on each other—and each other’s businesses—are collaborative and cool. This issue is filled with home-grown food by way of the chic new truck making its way around town called Caravan, Duryea’s revamped look in Montauk, and our curated guide to the best restaurants at the inns of the Hamptons. This weekend, we also take a peek into five of

themed issue. It’s the simple, alfresco lifestyle that defines summer in the Hamptons. Who doesn’t enjoy a bonfire, cooking out, or experiencing a beautiful and well-defined garden, whether it’s blooming with flowers or laden with vegetables to eat? Over the weekend, we will celebrate Art for Life, which benefits the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. Also taking place will be charity events for the South Fork Natural History Museum, the Southampton Animal Shelter, and the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. Please be sure to attend and help support these important local organizations.

This spring, I traveled to the wonderful city of Buenos Aires and to the southern end of Patagonia to experience the Perito Moreno glacier and trek on the majestic ice formations. The experience taught me that nature and our outdoor environment are always changing and to enjoy them in all their glory. So enjoy your own outdoor space and do something outside of your comfort zone. I’ll see you in town!

With fashion designer and former Hamptons cover star Charlotte Ronson.

This summer, I started to design my own outdoor sanctuary. Having led more than 10 expert real estate roundtables this year, I’ve learned from developers, architects, landscape architects, and real estate brokers what Hamptons residents are looking for in their natural outdoor living space. This, coupled with my love of nature—including the East End’s beautiful trees, woods, and our natural habitat—gardening, and cooking, means my own sanctuary will have many components that will be enjoyed in the years to come. This issue marks our first Outdoor Living-

Lauren finney

Lauren Bernstein is a fashion and beauty editor born, raised, and living in New York. From designer profiles to backstage beauty tips, her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, and Marie Claire. Bernstein talks summer eyewear with designer Tomas Maier in “Glass Act.” Why do you think Tomas Maier’s pieces fit so well in the Hamptons? Tomas Maier offers a 360-degree summer lifestyle experience. You can outfit yourself head-to-toe in Hamptons style. What’s on your agenda for the summer? I’ll be spending a week out East for vacation. I’m looking forward to enjoying relaxing weekday Hamptons perks, like outdoor movies in Sag Harbor and Yoga in the Vines at Wölffer Estate Vineyard.

A regular fashion contributor to Hamptons, Lauren Finney is an experienced stylist, writer, and fashion consultant who has also contributed to Cosmopolitan, Elle, and Vogue. In this issue, she chats with designer Nicole Miller, celebrates the 10th anniversary of Blue One, and shows us Everything But Water’s newest capsule collection. What defines Hamptons style? The Hamptons is all about understated luxury: neutrals and simple silhouettes in luxurious fabrics. Each hamlet defines style in its own way as a spin on this general concept. I really love the vibe of Amagansett and how laid-back it is. How would you describe your own personal style? My personal style is always evolving, but I dress as if it’s an endless summer. I’m currently into bohemian styles— loose cuts, prints, and flat sandals.

R. Couri Hay began his career as one of the original contributing editors to Andy Warhol’s Interview and went on to write for Town & Country and People. Hay sits down with artist David Salle in this issue’s “Social Studies” column, “Taking Care of Business.” What has been the highlight of your summer thus far? Every time I put the top down on my white 1965 Mercedes 280 SE and head out East, I feel free in a way Uber cannot replicate. What are your essentials for a perfect season? I can’t start the summer without having a half dozen pairs of white jeans, 12 new linen shirts, and six cases of Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne in my closet and cellar.

Sag Harbor resident Jessica Soffer has written for The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, and Real Simple, among other publications. She teaches fiction and food writing at Connecticut College and in Stony Brook University’s MFA program. In this issue of Hamptons, Soffer visits Hayley Thorpe’s chic new Pilates studio in Sag Harbor. What are your favorite wellness-based spots in the Hamptons? Wellness is an inner- and outer-body endeavor for me. So Norma Jean Pilates and Heidi Fokine’s Yoga in the Barn, plus Simply Sublime, Provisions, and Bazaar Botanica, too.

David Salle, Ross Bleckner, and Eric Fischl met in the early 1970s as students at the California Institute of the Arts. Later, they all established careers as influential painters in New York at a time when painting was considered to be passé as an artistic medium. “I was doing what one does,” says Salle of his post-college years. “You want to be a painter, you come to New York, and once you’re in New York, you somehow, if you’re lucky, eventually find your way out to the Hamptons.” Not only did these three come of age in the art world at the same time, they’ve also lived parallel lives in a way. And now, the Parrish Art Museum is presenting their work in a unified exhibition, “Unfinished Business: Paintings from the 1970s and 1980s by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl and David Salle,” opening July 31. “The idea of competition doesn’t exist in the same way that it might in some other arena,” says Salle of himself, Bleckner, and Fischl. “We’re not competing for the same role. We’re not competing for the same îî

job. Everyone is really quite singular and distinct, and our work is quite distinct.” Yet, in many ways, there has been much similarity. The three have ended up living on the same street more than once. “Ross was on White Street early on, and completely coincidentally, I was able to get a building on the other end of White Street in the early ’80s,” Salle recalls, adding that Tribeca was a mecca for artists at the time. Later on, in the 1990s, again completely by coincidence, both Salle and Bleckner owned homes on Daniels Lane in Sagaponack. “It was just one of those funny things,” says Salle, who suggests that it’s due to their singular

40  hamptons-magazine.com

personalities that they’ve remained friends all this time. “Ross and Eric are very witty, very funny, humorous people, but in very different and complementary ways,” he says. “There’s a sense of humor and sense of amusement— or bemusement—that underlies these last 40-some years, which I think speaks to the qualities, the personalities, of these men.” Living in the Hamptons, says Salle, is not a prime factor in his work; his affinity for the area is more personal, more about quality of life than quantity of work. “The quality of light matters if you’re a landscape painter,” he says. “Otherwise, I don’t think it enters into the conversation

one way or the other. I mean, the light, which everyone experiences, is very pleasing, but the idea of light mattering to a painter would only be true if you were a landscape painter of a certain type.” Salle does, however, respect the legacy of the East End, visiting the graves of artists like Jackson Pollock, Frank O’Hara, and Henry Geldzahler at the Green River Cemetery on occasion. And the rest of his free time is spent in a similarly low-key fashion. “Obviously, good

paintings are being made all over the world, so there’s no monopoly on that here,” says Salle. “It’s a place that works for me... There’s nothing special or fancy about what I do. I have my house, and my dog on the beach, the farmstands, and a good book.” “Unfinished Business: Paintings from the 1970s and 1980s by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl and David Salle” runs July 31–October 16 at the Parrish Art Museum, 279 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 283-2118; parrishart.org.

grand stand lee reitelman’s new mobile food stand, caravan, brings farmfresh fare to health-minded hamptonites. BY LAUREN EPSTEIN

“We’re strict about using ingredients that are at their peak,” says Lee Reitelman, co-owner of Caravan, a bright yellow mobile food stand that debuted at Bhumi Farms in May, and just expanded to a storefront location in Amagansett. With Caravan, Reitelman and partners Deeva Green and Alexandra Cohen serve organic, locally sourced breakfast and lunch offerings, including the must-try Terroir Bowl, which gets a new twist each week. “Last week, we were doing a miso tahini sauce with bok choy, pickled radish, and local shiitake mushrooms.” Next week? Perhaps a Middle Eastern bowl, Reitelman suggests. “It’s the best dish for anyone who wants to see what’s happening on the East End agriculturally.” Before opening Caravan, Reitelman and Green spent a year in Bordeaux, France, studying the food culture. “We knew that whatever business we created, we wanted to be connected to the land and the people,” says Reitelman. “There’s a long tradition of people here who take food seriously, from fishermen in Montauk to cheese makers in Bridgehampton,” he says. “I spend so much time planning dishes, thinking about where the food comes from, and the same is true for my partners, too.” 137 Main St., Amagansett, 731-4989; caravanwith.us; Bhumi Farms, 131 Pantigo Road, East Hampton, 496-8364; bhumifarms.com

CHEF, AUTHOR, AND THE CHEW COHOST MICHAEL SYMON IS ENJOYING SUMMER IN EAST HAMPTON WITH FRESH AND FLAVORFUL FOOD PICKED FROM HIS OWN GARDEN. BY SCOTT FELDMAN

You’re spending your first summer in East Hampton... I love that we live in the village and can walk to just about everything. I also love how central it is to the other villages. If not cooking, what are your favorite summer activities? Gardening and golf. What is your favorite summer ingredient? Tomatoes right out of my garden.

44

HAMPTONS-MAGAZINE.COM

What else are you growing? Six tomato varieties, about 10 herbs, hot peppers, three eggplant varieties, strawberries, tongue of fire beans, arugula, kale, escarole, endive, and Swiss chard. You recently opened Mabel’s BBQ in your Cleveland hometown, but where in the Hamptons is the best place for barbecue? I love barbecue in every

shape, size, and style; I have a giant smoker at the house and do a lot of smoking here, but I think Townline in Wainscott does a great job. Your son is opening Grindstone Coffee and Donuts in Sag Harbor. It’s opening in early to mid-July! [I’m] beyond excited—amazing brioche doughnuts made with ground flour from Amber Waves Farm and coffee from one of the country’s

top five roasters. Grindstone will be the first place to feature it on the East Coast. Who inspires you? My grandfather. A great man who lives by the motto of work hard, love your family, and be honest. What’s your favorite summer cocktail? Arnold Palmer with bourbon. What are your favorite local dining spots?

Breakfast at John Papas [Cafe in East Hampton], lunch at Bostwick’s, and dinner at Meeting House. What does the Hamptons mean to you? It is the one place I can go and always clear my head and relax with family. Grindstone Coffee and Donuts, 7A Main St., Sag Harbor; grindstonecoffee anddonuts.com. TWO WORLDS ONE DREAM ACCLAIMED ARCHITECT BRUCE NAGEL OPENS A GALLERY IN WESTHAMPTON BEACH TO DISPLAY HIS PHOTOGRAPHS AND BUILDINGS—AND TO BUILD A COMMUNITY.

“For a while, I’ve been wanting to do something in which as an architect I could actually display my work in a public forum fashion,” says award-winning local architect Bruce Nagel about The Architect’s Gallery, his new Westhampton Beach space in which he combines two of his passions. Nagel’s personal photography—all black-and-white images—hangs on one side of the gallery, while photos of his architectural achievements are displayed on the opposite wall. The two worlds are separated by a long wooden table in the center of the space, where Nagel can meet and talk with visitors. “I thought that photography would be a good draw for people,” he says. “I thought if it was just pictures of architecture, people wouldn’t be all that interested.” Wanting to give the place an energetic, convivial atmosphere, he decided to locate it in Westhampton Beach because “it’s a real social community.” Overall, Nagel hopes the gallery will be somewhere to further build his connections in the Hamptons. “I want to be a resource for people and at the same time have a relationship with people,” he says. “It’s all about relationships from my point of view.” 69 Main St., Westhampton Beach, 283-8855; brucenagel.com

“I GIVE THE AUDIENCE THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE THEIR IMAGINATIONS.” —JAMES LECESNE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW MURPHY

Who is Leonard Pelkey? He’s a 14-year-old kid who lives in a small New Jersey town. He’s very original, and flamboyant. He gives permission for people in his town to be more fully themselves, but they don’t realize that until after he’s disappeared. Why did you decide to create a one-man show? Each of us contains a multitude of people within us. And I knew I’d be cast! What can the audience expect? To laugh—because it’s actually very funny—and to have a good time. I give the audience the opportunity to use their imaginations. What do you hope viewers take away from the show? I hope that it inspires them to be themselves—more authentically themselves and more spontaneously themselves. The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey will be performed July 18–24, with a special performance on July 23 to benefit the LGBTQ organization Live Out Loud, at Bay Street Theater, 1 Bay St., Sag Harbor, 725-9500; baystreet.org

Best thing about planning events in the Hamptons? It’s almost like the cherry on the cake, because it’s really seasonal and you get to be a little bit more creative. Signature elements? Definitely long bars; the bar is the most important thing to the party. Also, I will do

an “invasion” where I’ll have about 15 waiters parade out with a large drink with 20 straws—it adds conversation and a bolt of adrenaline to the party. Favorite cocktail? You have to think: What will most people drink? Today it’s all about tequila or a great mojito. Party planning:

Your party should always reflect who you are. Your party should be an extension of your home; it shouldn’t be “my house is Ralph Lauren, but I’ll have a Versace party.” It doesn’t go. But maybe it’s that Ralph Lauren is your extension, but you add a little Versace to it. Favorite Hamptons

party? I just love being a fly on the wall. It’s not one party that’s a favorite for me, it’s the expressions on people’s faces when they have nothing to compare it to. Lawrence Scott Events, 35 Bethpage Road, Hicksville, 516-9337535; lawrencescott events.com

From Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s tortoiseshells to John Lennon’s signature round frames, sunglasses have a proven history of adding allure. “It’s true, eyewear can transmit an attitude,” says Tomas Maier, whose eponymous swimwear-turned-lifestyle brand has been a Hamptons favorite since the designer first opened in Wainscott in 2009. (The boutique later moved to East Hampton.) “Having worn eyewear since age 6, I am very sensitive to the importance of the right pair of frames in terms of necessity as well as the personal statement.” This attention to the je ne sais quoi is why Maier’s new hyper-curated collection of sunglasses features 10 integral styles. “My approach was all about the essential and very edited styles that I think most people would like to wear,” says Maier. “I tried to think of all the styles throughout my life that stuck with me—glasses I bought in far-flung places that represented a time and a place, but were difficult to part îî

with, even when I didn’t wear them any longer.” The range of unisex sunglasses, designed in partnership with Kering Eyewear, includes a soft rectangular tortoiseshell-esque frame for an “East Coast feel,” a squared gray lens with a “literary look,” and several updates on the Aviator for that “California vibe.” As for what sets Maier’s Aviator incarnations apart? “[Mine are] extremely light, flat-lensed, and ultraminimal,” he says. “Upon examination, you get the effort that went into them to make them different.” And it’s these reimagined classics, plus a squared-off stainlesssteel version called the Navigator, that stand out to Maier as quintessential East End must-haves. Says the designer, “For me, the Aviator and the Navigator are the perfect pairs for East Enders. They’re extremely understated, minimalist, and designed.” 74 Montauk Hwy., East Hampton, 604-6700; tomasmaier.com

A BEAUTIFUL LIFE

AT HOME With

TIM DA DAVIS VIS The Hamptons Luxury Market Leader

A rare find of an important Southampton estate with 8.5 Acres on Lake Agawam.

—TIM DAVIS

What are some singular words that you feel describes this Normandy estate? Exclusivity. Reinvented. Timeless. Lifestyle. There is so mauch architectural history in the Hamptons; where does this property fit in? There is a pedigree associated with this home as a foundation which was part of the original “Southampton Summer Colony Homes” built in the early 1900’s to represent the Hamptons Lifestyle. Explain the old world architecture that describes 408 First Neck and compare it to what’s being built today to mirror or replace that era? Homes were designed to be more insular. There was not as much thought about capturing viaws and the natural elements relative to the outdoors; being more efficient for heating and cooling with smaller windows and intimate spaces was a priority. During modern renovations, the most recent in 2014-2015, there have been integrations including state of the art HVAC systems, sound system throughout, and big windows to frame views of Lake Agawam and gardens as works of art. The current owners, with the guidance of famed designer Tony Ingrao have brought Normandy House into the 21st century.

What is it about your approach to real estate that gets you the premier properties in the Hamptons? Dealing with the sale of homes and properties that I do for the past 35 years has helped me to develop a deep understanding of the luxury lifestyle and how to convey this way of life to the marketplace What are the main attributes of 408 First Neck as a home? The incredible setting of course. From the 700 foot driveway approach to the main house through the gated entry past the sunken tennis court and grand lawn to where the property of over 8.5 Acres (comprising of two separate parcels) opens up to the 400’ of frontage on Lake Agawam. The water views are expansive which one enjoys from the home and also while sitting by the waterfront pool and entertaining by the pool house. The separate two bedroom guest house is ideal for family friends and guests.

What’s the history behind Lake Agawam? “Agawam” meaning fertile fields and open plains; the area surrounding the lake became and still is the center of the “Southampton Summer Colony” and the properties particularly noteworthy for their architectural pedigree and historical provenance.

“LA PLAGE IS ESSENTIALLY INSPIRED BY MY LIFESTYLE.” —NICOLE MILLER

DESIGNER NICOLE MILLER TRANSLATES HER NORTH HAVEN LIFESTYLE INTO A PUNCHY NEW BEACH COLLECTION FOR SUMMER. BY LAUREN FINNEY

“I spend a lot of my time near the beach,” says designer Nicole Miller, whose newest beach collection, La Plage, was informed by her love of wakeboarding and waterskiing near Sag Harbor. “It’s essentially inspired by my lifestyle.” While the collection

was shot on New York’s Rockaway Beach, the prints and silhouettes are decidedly East End. Think neutral open-weave off-the-shoulder tops, ombré dip-dyed linen beach dresses, and a sophisticated black graphic-cut onepiece swimsuit.

The La Plage collection, which Miller introduced earlier this year, started with the designer making printed rash guards for herself and her friends, “and then it evolved into a full collection,” Miller says. “It complements our customers’

wardrobes because there are so many versatile separates, as well as pieces that can easily transition from beach to dinner.” In business for more than three decades, Miller launched a second collection this year, NMAN for men. The line is “made up of

short- and long-sleeve shirts that feature digitally inspired prints,” says the designer. “Much like our women’s lines, NMAN is for those who aren’t afraid to stand out in a crowd.” Life’style, 127 Main St., Sag Harbor, 725-1667; nicolemiller.com

Here Comes the Son Andrew wAldAn represents the second generation to helm his family’s eponymous watch company, which is expanding with its first local showroom this month.

There are many legendary figures in the watch world, but one of the most notable is Waldan International’s Oscar Waldan, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday. As a young man, he learned watchmaking while imprisoned in concentration camps by the Nazis. It saved his life and set him on his future path. And years later, he shared his passion with his son, Andrew, from the boy’s earliest days. “I had a crib in my father’s office,” Andrew says. “When I was 10 years old, he placed a pen in my hand and made me draw circles until I could do it perfectly.” Today the 24-year-old Andrew is at the creative helm of Waldan International, and this year the brand is releasing Andrew’s first collection. Consisting of Swiss-made chronographs and chronograph chronometers, the collection will be limited to 250 total pieces in both sport and dress designs. The materials range from rugged titanium to sophisticated rose and white gold. Custom-built watches are also available. In addition, Waldan International will open its first showroom in New York City on August 1. Says Andrew, “Watches have souls and are an expression of our clients.” Blue One, 124 Main St., Westhampton Beach, 288-5830; waldanwatches.com. the fashion designer’s glam squad hurries to finish trimming his crop of black curls. Klum, already in full makeup, hair styled and manicure dry, and dressed in her first look of Hamptons’ cover shoot, naturally only intensifies her ribbing. “Stop! I don’t gym!” a slender Posen laughs as Klum continues to poke beneath his barber cape. If you lived on some alternative planet and didn’t know that Klum is one of the world’s most successful models, the cohost of not one but two reality television shows—including Project Runway, for which she’s won an Emmy Award as the series’ executive producer—a burgeoning fashion designer, and an ambassador with Unicef, and Posen is an award-winning fashion designer whose gowns have graced Hollywood’s A-list, you would think this scenario was average silliness between two best friends. The two originally met early on in Posen’s career when the designer cast Klum in one of his runway shows. “You were gutsy going for someone like me because people would not book me for fashion shows,” Klum tells Posen. “I was not a high fashion runway model, and I was never booked on those kind of jobs. I was very curvy with boobs… I remember like it was yesterday, I was wearing a red strapless jumpsuit. I was beyond excited; it was super cool, no smiling.” “I always cast my shows how I want to cast them, with good results and sometimes less good results,” says Posen. “Heidi was in a league of her own. And it was right before Project Runway started.” Just as Posen’s career has since gone through the stratosphere, Project Runway, too, has become a juggernaut, currently filming its 15th season. Klum has been there since the beginning, while Posen is just starting his fifth year. “The idea of venturing into media or onto television was something that had always been floating around and was interesting to me,” says Posen. “I had a big network my first year in business that wanted to do a reality show on me and my family, and thank God I didn’t do it. [Project Runway] had longevity and integrity. The first season, I really felt like I was being tested because, you know, a new fish in an operating machine. But Heidi was very nurturing and encouraging.” “There’s not a lot of television shows, especially reality television shows, that are on the air for that long,” says Klum of Project Runway. “We come up with great challenges, and we still find great talent. It is the same thing [every season, but] it just shows you have a good concept. It’s imaginative, it’s like a dream world. I think that’s also why America’s Got Talent [which Klum also cohosts] works—because people just love watching people who have other jobs, and here they are singing, juggling, sewing, doing this other kind of stuff.” Both Klum and Posen are, in a way, following in their competitors’ footsteps and branching out from their primary jobs to create new projects. Klum has launched Heidi Klum Intimates, a line of feminine lingerie for women, as well as a collection of briefs for men under the label HK Man. “I love lingerie and always bought a lot of lingerie,

but I was not actively looking [to create a lingerie line],” says Klum, who partnered with Bendon Group for the quarterly collections. “I have visions and ideas; we talk about what are the newest fabrics. I will make all of those choices, then I try everything on and tweak [the designs]. That’s how I get inspired—things I would want to wear.” Posen, meanwhile, is going from the atelier to the greenhouse, expanding on his love of gardening to develop his first cookbook. “Instagram made me take the plunge into putting a cookbook together,” says Posen. “People warned me not to post food on Instagram; many people in fashion thought it would destroy a following. But in fact, I think there was a very humanizing quality to it. Growing up I had trouble reading, but the visual aspect and organization of a cookbook was really alluring to me. I remember when the first edition of Martha Stewart’s Entertaining came out—it was classic and it really captivated me. There was another book, the La Varenne Pratique cookbook, that was really influential. And the food section of The New York Times was always a topic.” A rooftop gardener in the city, Posen cultivates a crop at his family’s home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and shops the many farmers markets out East. “Heidi always wants soft-shell crab,” Posen dishes about his costar. “And she likes the daikon. Heidi’s great, because she goes on my Instagram and then prints out what she wants me to cook.” In addition, Posen designed the uniforms for Delta Airlines, which will debut this fall; created the packaging for a Pinot Grigio by Ecco Domani, which sponsored Posen’s first show; and was recently named creative director for womenswear at Brooks Brothers. “Brooks Brothers is very appropriate for the Hamptons because it’s about redefining and evolving the classics, doing them better and updating them for today,” he says. “If you want to go from day to evening this summer, you need a great bathing suit, a great sandal, and the Brooks Brothers white shirtdress. Also, our long white tunic shirtdress, our chinos, and jewelry to accessorize. And sunscreen! It is so important to wear sunscreen.” The Hamptons is one place Klum and Posen have found they can step away from it all and unwind. “I love just hanging out, making barbecues, seeing friends,” says Klum. “I’m a huge beach person, and I don’t mind lying in the sand all day, but I won’t go in the water; it’s just too cold.” “I love the ocean,” counters Posen. “My friends say that as soon as I see water, I turn into a 6-year-old. I jump in, I love the waves, I love the briny seawater quality. I feel very at peace and enriched in the dunes and in the ocean, swimming.” Together, they enjoy coffee at Starbucks—“Heidi drives,” interjects Posen—browsing flea markets and vintage stores, and stopping by Cayli Cavaco Reck’s Bridgehampton beauty boutique. Says Posen, “You know what’s really nice? When Heidi and I are out on Long Island, there’s no makeup, there’s no glam squad…” “No, there are only nails in our feet!” adds Klum, as the two cut in, finishing each other’s sentences about the time last summer both stepped on the same rusty nail and ended up in Southampton Hospital. “They took such great care of us,” says Posen. “They were so nice.” Echoes Klum, “That’s where we got a tetanus shot!”

so unexpected!” says fashion editor Amanda Ross about her secluded garden in Southampton. “Nobody would ever imagine that around the bend from this narrow road there would be such an oasis.” The Hamptons is no more than a narrow spit of land jutting into the Atlantic, yet behind its tall privets lie some of the most stunning gardens in the country. If California is where the American garden tradition diverged from that of Europe, the Hamptons is where the hearty outdoor lifestyle of the English aristocracy became the ultimate American dream, with a vast lawn at its center. Today, old and new fortunes, a sandy loam soil, and a healthy spirit of competition combine to produce the area’s magnificent gardens, as wild and unchecked or as meticulously maintained as the owner’s imagination. In the 17th century, local farmers and fishermen planted simple square gardens in front of their cottages. But whaling wealth and the first railroad from New York City to Sag Harbor transformed the area in the mid-19th century from farmland to summer resort. Throughout the Gilded Age, gardens expanded from humble plots to often ostentatious displays. Unlike Newport and

Long Island’s North Shore, the Hamptons (Southampton in particular, a social annex of New York for the city’s beau monde) favored naturalistic gardens—with large lawns peppered with flower beds, pergolas, and topiary hedges—over Italianate walled gardens. This golden age of English-influenced gardens came to an end with the imposition of personal income tax, the Depression, and the Great Hurricane of 1938. After World War II, many large oceanfront estates were subdivided, parceled, and sold, and eventually the East End fell out of favor. But in the 1970s, a new wave of second-home construction began in the Hamptons, when many financial, design, and fashion industry leaders started to build summer residences here, although at a more modest scale. Hamptonites stopped looking just to England or Italy for inspiration, letting their global travels inform their eclectic styles. In recent decades, East End gardens have grown in proportion to burgeoning wealth, but this time with an eye toward respecting and protecting the local environment. Amanda Ross’s husband, Zack Bacon, found his perfect beach abode in 2012. For Ross (who recently

launched the website ARossGirl.com), it was love at first sight—not just with Bacon, but also with his romantic Southampton garden, created by Edwina von Gal, an East Hampton landscape designer who for years has been championing naturalistic landscapes and the planting of native species. Near the entrance, von Gal used cinnamon ferns, which shine bright against dark-green topiary shrubs. By the side of the house is an orchard and a cutting-flower garden with apple trees and peonies. The spaces are designed to be intimate but also to blend in with the surrounding native shrubs. As local gardens move away from exotic plants that require constant fertilizing and pesticides, Long Island nurseries are carrying a wider selection of native shrubs and perennials. For fruits and vegetables, environmentally conscious gardeners usually favor heirloom cultivars that are well adapted to local climates and naturally pest-resistant. You can have your native grasses and eat your peaches, too. After all, what makes the Hamptons such a rich environment is that it’s not too tightly bound by convention.

creating her garden, Martha Baker, a landscape designer based in Dering Harbor, Shelter Island, used its views of the Peconic River as the focal point, but not overtly. An arbor covered in clematis, which opens onto a narrow path leading to the bay, gives visitors a sense of mystery and discovery. At the end of the path, she installed thatched umbrellas, an outdoor fire pit, and lounges. “The combination of flowering plants, water, and sailboats as the backdrop to the garden is magical,” says Baker. “Foggy days are beyond magical!” To complement her stately old Shelter Island manor, Baker cultivated a romantic garden with meandering red brick paths that connect her green rooms. Her rose, lavender, sedum, and pampas grass beds extend almost to the water’s edge. It’s a settler’s garden, but reimagined and magnified. Much of what we see in the Hamptons today represents the amplification and simplification of existing concepts. After British fashion entrepreneur Marigay McKee moved to the East End, she quickly planted both British and American flags on her sweeping Southampton lawn: Her garden’s influences are decidedly British, but its scale is American. “The driveway has 20 crab apple trees flanked by 12-foot hedges on either side, and it’s surrounded by 20 acres of fields,” McKee says, “so the views are spectacular from every angle.” The original garden was planted 30 years ago, so landscape designer Joe Tyree used the existing trees to give the new garden magnificence. When McKee started working with Tyree, she sent him 225 photos to convey her vision, especially of the Cotswolds, a rural area of south central England that’s famous for its topiary. “The common theme throughout is our love of topiary,” McKee says. “We planted 500 round buxus balls around the courtyard, the south

New York Parties: Private Views author Jamee Gregory worked with landscape designer Craig James Socia to add a sculptural element to her entryway, planting nearly 60 (deer-repellent) boxwood balls; meanwhile, her backyard (above left and right) is a more free-flowing English-style garden, complete with tuteurs and birdhouses.

purple garden, and the white pond garden. They are the soul of our formal gardens, which are surrounded by lindens and maples.” “Sculptural” was a new element that author Jamee Gregory added to her decades-in-the-making garden in Southampton. Taken with the work of landscape designer Craig Socia when visiting interior designer Jamie Drake’s house while writing her book New York Parties, Gregory allowed Socia to reimagine her own landscape, which she admits had become a little overrun with plants to which she was emotionally attached. “He cut back a lot of my perennials, he made the beds half as big as they were, he made the whole property look twice as wide, and he put in this massive planting of beautiful annuals so there would be color all year,” says Gregory. “It’s quite extraordinary how he transformed [the garden], and I was just thrilled with the things he interjected into it. It’s the palette that I always have— pink, white, and blue—and many of the plants are the same plants that I’ve used, but he masked them in different ways and changed some of the patterns.” The biggest transformation, however, was at the entrance to the house, where Socia added a double hedge, osmanthus plants, and close to 60 deer-repellent boxwood balls. “The front of the house is the antithesis of the back—the back is my wonderful English garden, but in the front I got this wonderful new creation that’s absolutely fascinating in the way that light and shadow

play on these balls,” says Gregory. “I love the contrast because it’s unexpected and more dramatic.” Diana Frank, a photographer from Michigan who now divides her time between New York City and Bridgehampton, designed her garden in defiance of Hamptons formality. She started 10 years ago, transforming what was essentially a flag lot with clippings that she brought from her family home in Michigan. She introduced peonies as seedlings, and now they’re her favorite part of the garden because they have naturalized and spread. “I didn’t want that insanely perfect and organized garden,” says Frank, “but even an unmanicured garden takes a lot of work! It’s like getting a haircut without looking like you just got it cut.” Slowly and with the help of her friend Christine Harmon, a landscape designer, Frank planted a garden that is greatly influenced by her photography, with layers of textures and colors and even fragrances that are “meant to stimulate all senses,” she explains. “All around the garden, I created nooks where you can sit with a glass of rosé, meditate, or just sit quietly with a book.” This year she is experimenting with a wide variety of lettuces in her vegetable garden, in addition to heirloom tomatoes, eggplants, and the arugula that she lets get tall and bloom. “I’m a country girl who married a city boy,” Frank says. “We welcome friends and make a freshly picked salad that is still warm from the sun. It’s a very happy place.”

TradiTion WiTh a TwisT By refreshing her family’s weekend house in southampton, decorator Cathy triant Buxton carries on her father’s legacy. By Jean nayar

Cathy Triant Buxton worked with Whitmores in East Hampton on the landscaping and general contracting throughout her home, including the new covered porch addition envisioned by the designer and her father as an inviting outdoor living area outside the kitchen.

PhotograPhy By Costas PiCadas

“When you’re a decorator, you’re always tweaking,” says Cathy Triant Buxton, who sees her family’s weekend home in Southampton as a continual work in progress. In some ways, the same was true for her father, Ted Triant, a well-known architect and designer who worked with the celebrated English decorator David Hicks, the brash, brilliant mastermind behind the jet-set chic style favored by the movers and shakers of the 1960s. Before he passed away, Triant Buxton’s father designed the interiors of the five-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot home for its previous owner, before ultimately deciding to purchase it himself. And she and he often spoke of ways to enhance it inside and out. “The redo of the landscaping started when my father and I began talking about the idea of turning the dreary area where he used to do the grilling into a social place, with a seating area and a bar where everyone could gather,” Triant Buxton says, noting that her efforts to refresh the house began in earnest when she inherited it. Since then, she has taken on not only the outdoor spaces, but many of the rooms, too, upgrading the home in ways that would probably have made her father smile. Because she and her husband continue to share the house îî

with Triant Buxton’s mother, other family members, and two toy poodles, Lulu and Sophie, she wanted to be sure its many rooms offered “something for everybody.” Relying on a mix of the home’s original furnishings and newly acquired pieces (“Everything comes from auction,” she says, “Doyle, Sotheby’s, Christie’s”), she has allowed the past to flow seamlessly into the present. Items such as a pair of French bergère chairs, Regency chandeliers and mirrors, a leather Chesterfield sofa, bamboo chests, and porcelain tulipieres harmonize with the French-provincial-meetsEnglish-country-meets-Palm Beach vibe throughout the house. Rooms and furnishings were revitalized with lively printed fabrics and whitewashed finishes—“I like white paint!” Triant Buxton exclaims. New and restored accents, such as reupholstered footstools and children’s furniture (which the poodles use as ladders or beds), inject a bit of fresh energy. “We have a lot of places for everyone to escape to—the living room, the den, a sitting room off the back terrace, a breakfast room off the kitchen,” Triant Buxton says, noting that each has a flavor that appeals to a particular family member. Yet her father’s influence continues to dominate outdoors on the bluestone patio he envisioned. “Everybody loves it,” she says. “It’s become the social place of the house.”

“It’s definitely a quality-of-life thing in terms of being able to go from point A to point B in total comfort and just negating the traffic,” says Tom Murray of Blackbird Hovercraft Charters, the company he founded with Brewster Jennings, which uses eco-friendly hovercrafts to transport people by water around the East End. Powerful fans create a cushion of air beneath the hull, lifting the hovercraft above the surface and allowing it to travel over shallow water and in other

conditions that prohibit most conventional boats. The Blackbird “cruises at 30 to 35 knots and only burns about four gallons of fuel an hour because we’re not pushing any water,” says Murray. “We’re frictionless.” New to the Hamptons and based at Harbor Marina in East Hampton, Blackbird offers full-day and halfday customizable charters and point-to-point transportation to and from East Hampton and New London, Connecticut; around the North and South Forks of Long

Island; and back and forth to Fishers Island, and the company hopes to expand throughout the East End. The enclosed hovercrafts have two gull-wing doors, are fully air-conditioned, and are equipped with independent adjustable shockwave forward seating and Bose headsets. Says Murray, “We’re excited to be here and just want to see if we can solve a problem of transporting people around.” 6 Boat Yard Road, East Hampton, 516-5801543; blackbirdvii.com

Piece by piece This weekend’s MonTauk hisTorical socieTy second house crafT show feaTures works by AmAndA Bec mAnn, aMong oTher local TalenTs.

“I was always creative as a kid, but for some reason, over the years I convinced myself I wasn’t,” explains Amanda Beckmann, a Long Island native who spent years navigating the business side of a design firm that she co-owned in Portland, Oregon. “It wasn’t until my firm participated in a fundraising art auction that I had my great epiphany moment. One day I grabbed wood and magazines and started painting and cutting, and I created my first collage. That was when I went, Oh my God, I am good at this.” After the design firm closed, Beckmann devoted herself to her art. Four years ago, she moved back to Montauk, where her family had settled after she graduated from high school (Beckmann once worked at The Golden Eagle). After repurposing a denim skirt with her sewing machine, Beckmann reports that customers “freaked out,” and a whole new business was born. Today Beckmann’s denim creations—everything from bags and purses to skirts and patches (along with collages and watercolors)—are a hit at local craft/ maker’s shows and farmers markets, as well as on her Etsy site, Artbya. “The beauty of living in the Hamptons as an artist is that you don’t have to do any work to get ready; you are already in that state of mind,” she says. “And fortunately, there is a big maker’s movement out here that is really supportive.” Amanda Beckmann’s work can be seen at this weekend’s Montauk Historical Society Second House Craft Show, Montauk Highway and Second House Road, Montauk; visit amanda beckmann.com.

History in the Remaking Designer Steven Gambrel reimagines a 19th-Century sag harbor whaling Captain’s resiDenCe, now on the market with saunDers.

“It had the spirit of a sea captain’s house,” says designer Steven Gambrel, describing the stately building at 42 Howard Street in Sag Harbor. “However, it had been a boarding house and was clad in aluminum siding.” Gambrel discovered the home three years ago and decided to refurbish it and resell it; today it’s a dream house more suitable for a captain of industry, with a new wing, featuring a doubleheight public room and a media room with a fireplace, as well as a 33-foot saltwater pool. Every aspect of commodious 19thcentury life has been brought up to the standards of modern luxury living. “He went through a lot with the planning board to get this done,” says Saunders’s Terry Cohen, who is colisting the property for $10.5 million. “Some lucky person will get a home conceived by Steven Gambrel without waiting three years for him to complete the design. It has captain’s beds and reclaimed wood floors that match the historic original ones, and you’re steps away from a marina.” Also representing the house is Saunders’s Jane Gill, a former Ralph Lauren contract model who frequently worked with Bruce Weber and who now specializes in historic homes. “I love that he took this 1853 house and brought back its authentic character, with

Captain [John] Overton had come in from a successful whaling expedition when he built it, so there are a lot of fabulous details.” Some of those details were enhanced by Gambrel, such as “a beautiful back staircase off the kitchen,” he says. “It has a wonderful mud room with mercury-glass panels on the doors.” As for the sumptuous furnishings, “I’ve been going to auctions in France and London,” says the designer, “but a lot of

There is one 13-foot mural of shipbuilders with a giant mast running through it that I got in Baltimore.” The house also boasts a heated twocar garage, a wine cellar, and a charming guesthouse. OutdOOr Living Dinner on the patio, entertaining by the pool, or playing on the lawn—it’s all part of our hamptons lifestyle. a panel of east enD brokers, builDers, anD Design experts Discusses how to maximize a home’s outDoor spaces.

It’s hard to think of the Hamptons without outdoor living, but how has that lifestyle evolved? Callie Hincy: One thing that we see now is the same luxurious look that you have for indoor fabric options, now you can do that for outdoors, whereas before, you may have been a little bit more limited. It gives people more areas to reflect their personal style. Michael Gotowala: It is definitely a trend because of the fire pits. Every job

where I have to design fire pits, [we have to ask], Where are the chairs going to go? The seats all have cushions on them, and they all have umbrellas. We’re doing a drill hole flush with the deck, so we give people options to put their umbrellas anywhere around the pool. Richard Kudlak: I think the theme here is technology. A change in fabric is a kind of technology. We have retractable insect screens that are popular, replacing what used to be

the built-in screen porch. There has been a resurgence in modern architecture in the Hamptons. A lot of the traditional architectural elements are evolving and being reassessed [in terms of] heating technologies, solar technologies. Ronnie Gibbons: There is talent around here—architects, the real estate people are all a team. Your pool builder is not just building a pool; we’re working in the surroundings. It’s the talent of the architect to bring the outdoors in, but it’s our talent to be able to enthrall you to live beyond those walls. How are you seeing these kinds of trends impacting your business? Michael Derrig: At one point, especially in the traditional homes, the landscape has gotten a little messy and more complicated. I see people returning to some of the simpler materials, simpler details, simpler forms, simpler shapes. That doesn’t mean that it’s not as interesting; it’s now a much cleaner look. There is more geometry. James Merrell: It’s beautiful for the landscape, and it’s true that modern architecture is cleaner, so people don’t want clutter. Sometimes the kitchen that’s inside is just fine. Outdoor living [can be] looking at a beautiful landscape from within the home, and the architecture can frame that. Are these things being reflected at the retail end? John Scott “JT” Thomas: For sure. With the most recent homes that I’ve sold, the outdoor space is ignored and clients are excited to create their own sanctuary. The reason for coming to the Hamptons is to be outside. Either you do a traditional Hamptons green, very nonhardscaped space, or you can do something more structural, more artistic, more linear. Like the pools are set in grass. People love that look. MG: One of the things that is challenging with outdoor barbecues and fireplaces is to bring îî

Callie Hincy (with John Scott Thomas) says outdoor fabrics are now offering “the same luxurious look” as indoor styles.

them in but not compete with the architecture, to keep them in scale. What is one example of a great innovation in outdoor living that you have seen or have in your home? JT: Personally, I think that lighting is a big topic. The way that the outdoors is lit—in your different nooks, different sitting areas, dining areas—I think it creates such an amazing feel for entertaining. JM: Good exterior lighting really is magical. It really does create depth to the property. We have done some different kinds of lighting and it looked like many large bulbs with many fixtures. MD: We’re doing a house in North Haven that’s surrounded by marshland. We’re lifting the house [up so it’s] looking out over the grasses and we’re allowing the natural landscape to come back in and get a shrub line between the architectural landscape and the natural landscape. That sort of goes in reverse of the ideas of building on and inhabiting the landscape with more and more structures. It’s more of an aesthetic approach. A growing number of people are really looking to create an aesthetic environment, and to blend with nature, as opposed to overcoming nature and adding all that artificial landscape, sort of like hardscape. Too much artificial planting, not native species—that is not there to be seen. RK: It’s like taking a house and plopping it down in the existing vegetation and just bringing all those natives right back. JM: People’s thoughts are getting a little simpler as far as size and what they will do with the land. The Hamptons is not about overwhelming; it’s about [making the most of] what you have—especially Sag Harbor. You make your own little area special. You use the right materials, and then you have your own little heaven.

On the Marque from a top italian architect to sweeping ocean views, harald grant of sotheby’s knows what makes an east end real estate listing exceptional.

Why we know him: In his 30 years in the business, Harald Grant, a senior global real estate advisor for Sotheby’s, has sold more than $2 billion in prime East End property. Recent megadeal: “I sold the McKnight estate on Gin Lane in December,” says Grant, referring to an historic property with four acres of oceanfront, “and I sold that with an additional lot with six acres on Gin Lane for $55 million.” Top listings: “A new house on Pheasant Lane for $32 million. The builder made a custom house with every-

thing imported from Italy. Achille Salvagni, the Italian architect, did the interiors. Francis Fleetwood designed the structure.” Another property he’s listing is Angel View, with its own meandering beach. “It’s six acres on the bluffs in North Haven with sunset views and a grotto pool— and not one but two infinity pools. It’s a stunning property, custom-built. It has a European cottage style, resembles a German hunting lodge, and is priced at $49 million.” East End favorites: “At Bobby

Van’s, I order steak; at Sant Ambroeus, veal Milanese; and I like the flounder almondine at the American Hotel.” Next generation: Grant’s son, Bruce, works with him at Sotheby’s. “He’s very honest, not pretentious, a nice young man with incredible manners. He got that part from my ex-wife, Wendy.” Grant’s daughter, Alexi, lives in Quogue. “She’s into acting, and she likes to look at real estate with daddy.” Sotheby’s International Realty, 50 Nugent St., Southampton, 283-0600; haraldgrantrealestate.com

TWO DECADES OF DÉCOR HAMPTONS STAPLE MECOX CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH AN EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION BASED ON THE STORE’S MOST ICONIC PIECES.

“It was pretty mesmerizing for me, seeing the Hamptons for the first time,” says Mac Hoak, founder of home and garden emporium Mecox. “I was not used to anything quite as spectacular.” The natural beauty and relaxing atmosphere made such an impression that Hoak, who was in finance at the time but had a growing passion for gardens and outdoor décor, decided to open Mecox in Southampton. Twenty years later and Hoak’s business of assorted furnishings now boasts seven locations, including stores in East Hampton, NYC, and Palm Beach. “It’s a tribute to all the customers who have helped us over the years,” he says. “A tribute to people I work with who have stood by us through the good and the bad days.” Mecox will help mark its 20th anniversary with a collection of 20 new items to be sold exclusively at all locations. The line of both interior and exterior pieces, which is due out this fall, will reflect the store’s history. One item in particular will be reminiscent of a dining table created 15 years ago, made of thick bluestone and rustic beams, originally meant for a patio. Says Hoak, “The customer who bought it, a designer, said, ‘I’m not putting that outside; that’s going right in my client’s dining room, overlooking the bay.’” 257 County Road 39A, Southampton, 287-5015; mecox.com

Why we know him: In his young career, Matthew Breitenbach, who heads the Matthew Breitenbach Team at Douglas Elliman, has already been a part of $1 billion in real estate sales transactions. Last year he was ranked the number-two agent in the Hamptons, and The Wall Street Journal has just named him one of the top 250 agents in the US. Currently he has approximately 30 listings worth about $280 million. Power player: Breitenbach sold former NBA all-star Jason

Kidd his house in the Hamptons for $5 million and later resold it for $7.1 million. Now working with Douglas Elliman’s Sports & Entertainment Division, Breitenbach rented houses to actor Jeremy Piven and musician Trey Songz last year. Former NHL star Sean Avery bought a home through Breitenbach, who also brought in the buyer for Russell Simmons’s East Hampton estate. Priority project: Breitenbach is currently working with Douglas Elliman chair-

man Howard M. Lorber on a project in Sagaponack. “I sold him the land and he’s developing it. It’s new construction, modern, right on the ocean, and we’ll bring it to market probably sometime at the end of this year. Mr.

Lorber has been a great influence on me since I came to the company.” Off hours: “I’m a member of Southampton [Golf Club], but National is my favorite. It’s a beautiful spot up there on the bluff overlooking the bay, and Shinnecock

“I’m all about finding balance,” says Tara Curran, the wellness director at the Surf Lodge. “Last year we created a strong fitness presence on the deck here, and this year we wanted to incorporate healers and other practitioners as well.” A holistic health coach and nutritionist since 2010, Curran has curated a summer’s worth of fitness and wellness at the Surf Lodge, with the offerings ranging from the tranquil (meditation, Kundalini yoga) to the heart-pounding (fitness boot camps). The lineup also features an acupuncturist, a massage therapist, and a “sound bath.” If your eating habits need a little one-onone coaching, Curran is available to advise guests on meal plans so they can “eat foods that just make them feel good” and get closer to finding balance in their daily lives. “The mornings are so peaceful and serene here, and we’re really taking advantage of that,” adds Curran, who enjoys biking around Montauk on her days off and indulging in I’m Not Your Monkey smoothies at Joni’s, lobster rolls at the Surf Lodge, and rosé at Navy Beach. “We now offer guests a mind/ body experience that goes well beyond just fitness.” Classes are open to guests and nonguests; visit oneroof byserene.com to register. “Make it about the experience and not the destination and it will happen faster, better.” —hayley thorpe photography by the lacuna project (interiors); satin sky photo (thorpe)

Hayley Thorpe named her Sag Harbor Pilates studio NJP not just for the Marilyn Monroe allusion (Norma Jean was the star’s real name) but also as an abbreviation for “not just Pilates.” And it isn’t. Upstairs from her family’s wellknown liquor store on Main Street, Thorpe has created what she calls a clubhouse. As a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology with an incredible eye for detail (her husband is a successful architect), she wanted her business to feel less like a gym and more like a place to get inspired. The color palette is black and white, and there’s a rotating collection of art by Bert Stern, Lee Krasner, and Ray Caesar, along with sheepskin poufs, delicate antiques, cozy nooks, fireplaces, a sleek kitchen stocked with all the smoothie essentials—and, naturally, the most gorgeous Pilates equipment you’ve ever seen. Forgetting you’re in a health club is kind of the point, Thorpe says. She wants the physical transformation to feel like a bonus. “Make it about the experience and not the destination and it will happen faster, better,” she explains. Access is restricted (this is the Hamptons, after all). There are no group classes, and private and semiprivate classes are available through referral only. But once you’re in, there is a run club, a dance club, musical performances, and wellness events. And Thorpe oversees it all, with her studio manifesting the core values of Pilates itself: subtlety and finesse. 52 Main St., Sag Harbor, 8083131; normajeanpilates.com

Each starts her mornings with a workout at Tracy Anderson Method (903 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 6046529; tracyanderson.com) or DanceBody (231 Midocean Dr., Bridgehampton, 212500-1174; dancebody.com). Then it is breakfast at Hampton Coffee Company (194 Mill Road, Westhampton Beach, 2884480; hamptoncoffee company.com) for Miller, followed by a stop at Tenet (91 Main St., Southampton, 377-3981; tenetshop.com), where she is the head buyer. Crespi likes to head to Babinski Farm (160 Newlight Lane, Water Mill, 917-239-2517) plus some shopping at Jenni Kayne (2 Main St., Southampton, 268-2144; jennikayne.com). As an afternoon treat,

Miller brings her kids to Candy Kitchen (2391 Montauk Hwy., Bridgehampton, 537-9885); for Crespi, it is gelato from Sant Ambroeus (30 Main St., Southampton, 283-1233; santambroeus.com). And when it is time for date night, Crespi loves the new Jean-Georges restaurant at Topping Rose House (1 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Tpk., Bridgehampton, 5370870; toppingrosehouse.com), while her sister favors Sant Ambroeus for crispy Brussels sprouts and a great bottle of Montepulciano.
