“I am enamored with the aesthetic of the Hamptons; it is where I am happiest. There is a heritage here that has remained intact and a style that is classic. The images that I take of homes and décor are meant to inspire and demonstrate how one can

incorporate the Hamptons’ coastal style into their personal space. Front doors, florals, and nautical interiors are the essence of design in the Hamptons, and where my eye is drawn to because of the vibrant colors. “Color is the center of

my design work. Another aspect that makes the Hamptons lovely is that the area is saturated in light and color. One of the colors that I love the most is blue, and that coastal influence can be seen in hotels, homes, and stores decorated in blue and

white palettes. “Sag Harbor reminds me of wandering through centuries-old villages when I was a child growing up in England. The area has many similar characteristics of the English countryside—beautifully maintained gardens,

tree-lined streets, winding roads—and it is steeped in rich history. I am obsessed with shingle-style traditional cottages and houses; they are quaint yet rustic. The setting is truly idyllic and a welcome escape from the trappings of city life.”

from left: With cover star Georgina Bloomberg at the Humane Society of the United States’ To the Rescue! From Cruelty to Kindness Gala; at the exquisite Southampton home of Marigay McKee and Bill Ford for the World Armarium and Missoni launches; Susan Rockefeller and I toasting friend and Montauk photographer Michael Dweck’s Hamptons magazine cover.

I have known our cover star, Georgina Bloomberg, for countless years. She’s driven, an expert in her equestrian field, and a continued supporter of the Hampton Classic, which she will be riding in again this summer. The weeklong event, from August 28 through September 4, is one of the most compelling spectator sports in the Hamptons. I spend days wandering around the grounds, watching the jumpers, visiting the exhibitors and, of course, the on-site boutiques. The competition is intense and involves riders across all classes, from the Young Jumper Championships to the Hunter Divisions. The event culminates in the Grand Prix ring with the intensely competitive Hamptons Classic Leadline, in which the riders parade their horses in front of the VIP-tent attendees and the winning rider emerges victorious in what is the grandest way to end the sea-

son! Tickets can be purchased at HamptonClassic.com. Delve into the world of Georgina Bloomberg in this issue and experience her life on the equestrian circuit in a story penned by sportswriter Ann Liguori. This weekend you can also visit Simone Levinson and I at Intermix in Southampton from 4 to 6 pm; we’ll be giving you our picks for fall, as the shop is going to be staying open year-round. Check out Southampton Sweat, which has an impressive fitness lineup at the Southampton Arts Center; swing by the Artists & Writers charity softball game; and support pet adoption at the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons’ event in Wainscott. Have a wonderful weekend!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

With Michael Bolson, owner of Prime Restaurant where we held our Real Estate Roundtable, featured in this issue.

Georgina Bloomberg appears on our cover for the third time, and I could not be more thrilled. As an involved member of our community, an author, and an equestrian activist, she embodies our Hamptons lifestyle. Grace and style are her hallmark. While always looking chic and put together, Georgina is the essence of class and beauty, and she gives back to this community and the equestrian community. She sits on the boards of many charitable organizations, as well as the Hampton Classic. As the season comes to an end, we can’t help but start to think about the next season. Fashion is at the top of our mind in this issue, as we contemplate our next wardrobe purchases and see the trends for the crisp fall forecast. With fall come

neutral colors, cashmere sweaters, riding boots, and an opportunity to bundle up a bit. From September 8 to 15, it will be New York Fashion Week in New York City, which is the perfect time to become inspired and personalize your style. Maybe fall 2016 will be a time to take a risk and make a fashion statement out of your comfort zone. Some popular fall fashion trends include pieces in a muted orange color, reassembled denim, tied and linked pieces, and so much more! But for now, with summer still with us, we can embrace the warm weather and sunshine while wearing our favorite sandals, lightweight dresses, and delightful varieties of color. Take advantage of all the Hamptons has to offer: Make your way to the

beach, visit a farmstand, or treat yourself to a variety of delicious fine dining. It is difficult to imagine that before we know it, summer will be coming to a close! This weekend we will celebrate the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons’ Bow Wow Meow Ball at the ARF Adoption Center in Wainscott, as well as Michael Bolton’s An Intimate Evening Under the Stars, whose proceeds will go to Michael Bolton Charities, which continues to assist children and women at risk. So enjoy the week out East, take advantage of the beautiful summer weather, visit local shops to start scoping out your fall wardrobe additions, and I’ll see you in town!

alyson krueger

ann liguori

New York City-based freelance journalist Alyson Krueger is a regular contributor to The New York Times and Forbes, among other publications. She loves to travel and find stories wherever she goes. Here, Krueger interviews Michael Romano about all things rosé. What are your thoughts on the rosé trend in the Hamptons (and everywhere else)? I’m a big fan! It’s the perfect drink whether you’re lounging on the beach, eating at a fancy restaurant, or working at your computer. I believe the more rosé, the better! What is your drink of choice in the summer? I’m into draft rosés that many restaurants now have on tap; they’re better for the environment because they’re poured from a keg and not individual bottles. And they have more of a wooden taste, which I love. I also never say no to a glass of bubbly.

Ann Liguori is a nationally recognized sports radio and television personality, producer, author, and philanthropist. One of CBS New York’s original hosts, she is also WFAN’s golf and tennis correspondent, and owner of the cable series Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori. For this issue, Liguori chats with professional equestrian Georgina Bloomberg as she gears up for the Hampton Classic. How would you describe Georgina Bloomberg? Georgina is a fierce competitor committed to being the best that she can be, both physically and mentally at the top level of her sport. Outside of competition, she has a heart of gold and does all that she can to save the lives of animals. What can readers look forward to at the 2016 Hampton Classic? It’s one of the biggest and most exciting [horse shows] in the country with the best riders in the world. And it’s one of the top social events in the Hamptons each year!

With a passion for portraiture, award-winning photographer Gregg Delman has shot countless images of the world’s most recognized icons for clients including Rolling Stone, New York magazine, and Vogue. Delman’s first book, Misty Copeland, published by Rizzoli, comes out this September. See his gorgeous photographs in “Vintage Vroom.” Did you have a particular vision for this shoot? I didn’t go into it with a specific inspiration. I like to feed off the relationship between the owner and their car to see how they relate. What did you enjoy most? I have always loved vintage cars. I had a 1964 Oldsmobile F-85 convertible when I was younger. Taking photos of old cars lets me reminisce.

Sean Evans is an editor at the automotive publication The Drive. A former entertainment columnist for the New York Daily News, he’s contributed to a host of publications including Condé Nast Traveler, Sports Illustrated, New York magazine, and more. Evans channels his experience in automotive journalism to write “Vintage Vroom” for this issue of Hamptons. What was your favorite car from the vintage car story? They’re all fantastic models, but my favorite would be Marvin [Chudnoff]’s 1959 Mercedes 220 SE Cabriolet. That’s such an iconic and classic car, made in an era when Mercedes vehicles were nearly completely hand-produced.

Brendan Fallis and Hannah Bronfman celebrated their Hamptons cover at Oreya in Southampton.

The Hamptons party scene has shown no signs of slowing down, with some of the most anticipated events of the summer taking place this week. The young Hamptons dwellers who make the East End cool and the summer nights hot made their presence known at a slew of social gatherings. These emerging East End A-listers came out in full force to celebrate Hamptons magazine’s premiere Youth Issue with cover stars Hannah Bronfman and Brendan Fallis. Meanwhile, the high-wattage glamour of the art world was on display at the Watermill Center Summer Benefit. Always a seasonal highlight, the event did not disappoint as a diverse crowd, including Amanda Hearst, Alex Soros, and Kate Foley, wandered the wooded grounds and danced in the balmy heat to an impromptu performance by Ja Rule well after the sun went down.

IconIc author and entrepreneur Martha Stewart publIshes her latest book, Vegetables, just In tIme for the fall harvest. By R. CouRi Hay

Martha Stewart turned 75 in August, but she’s just as busy as she’s always been, with a new book out on September 6, Martha Stewart’s Vegetables: Inspired Recipes and Tips for Choosing, Cooking, and Enjoying the Freshest Seasonal Flavors, full of advice on selecting, storing, and cooking what grows in the garden. “Gradually over the years, I have come to rely more and more on a vegetable-based diet, not because it’s going to make me live longer, but because I actually love vegetables and they make me feel good,” says Stewart, whose organic garden at her home in Bedford, New York, features cabbage, zucchini, squash, artichokes, peas, beans, onions, and 30 kinds of lettuce. While her diet is not strictly plant-based—she also eats fish and other proteins—Stewart says the book is “mildly encyclopedic” about vegetables, some of which readers may not have encountered. “I believe that if you give people good recipes that are very tasty, they will try new and different things,” she explains. “There are lots of vegetables in the markets and in the farmstands that people have never seen or tried, and we try to inform and inspire people to actually try some of these.” A cookbook is not îî

Stewart’s only weapon in her battle to get Americans to eat more healthily. She has also launched a meal kit service, Martha & Marley Spoon, which delivers fresh ingredients for meals that you can prepare at home with simple step-by-step instructions. In addition to meals with meats and fish, the service offers vegetarian options, with each recipe balanced to include grains or beans. “Martha & Marley is a partnership meant to save you a tremendous amount of time,” Stewart explains. “You do not have to shop. You do not have to waste money or waste ingredients. So if you need a tablespoon

of sherry vinegar, that’s what comes in the box. You don’t have to go buy an $11.99 bottle that you may never use again.” Stewart is also currently at work on a new, long-anticipated project: her autobiography. “It’s pretty hard because my life is kind of an open book, [but] you’ll be pleasantly surprised,” she says. “I have learned a lot in a short time, and I think everybody will learn a lot from it.” In the meantime, Stewart tends to her ornamental garden at her home in East Hampton; supports a number of local causes, such as the LongHouse Reserve, the East Hampton Historical Society, and the

Ladies Village Improvement Society; and is a frequent visitor to area restaurants, including 1770 House, Clam Bar, and La Fondita. And while Stewart is a star around the world, on the East End, it seems, her dogs— two Chow Chows and three Frenchies—get all the attention. “The dogs love the Hamptons,” she says. “They’re fixtures on Lily Pond Lane. Everybody knows the dogs.” Martha Stewart’s Vegetables: Inspired Recipes and Tips for Choosing, Cooking, and Enjoying the Freshest Seasonal Flavors (Clarkson Potter; $29.50) comes out September 6

What was the inspiration behind Relish? For founder Claudine Revere, it was the desire to combine her love of delicious food with entertaining and the sense of completion and accomplishment that’s exclusive to catering. Why the Hamptons? Many of our clients were heading east for the

summer, and we wanted to be able to move with them and strengthen our relationships. Signature dish? Our chef, Blake Farrar, oversaw two of JeanGeorges [Vongerichten]’s restaurants and brings a totally different dynamic to food. With a lot of Asian influence, his hamachi with ginger

umami conserve is one of the most popular hors d’oeuvres. Most importantly, people can’t get enough of the dessert he offers, especially the cheesecake bite with blueberry and mint and also the dark chocolate cupcake with espresso frosting. Do you have any favorite venues in

the Hamptons? Wölffer Estate Vineyard— what a beautiful place for a late-summer party. Also, the Bridgehampton Tennis & Surf Club is one of the most simplistic and beautiful places to get married if you’re looking for a beach wedding. 830 Fifth Ave., NYC, 212-228-1682; relish caterers.com

SOUTH AFRICAN BEAUTY MARI E WESSELS BRINGS SOME CAPE TOWN HEAT TO OUR HAMPTONS SHORES. BY ALLY FEINSOT

Who: Marike Wessels, 26 Why you know her: This South African stunner has posed for Cosmopolitan, Polo, and L’Oréal, and in her home country she starred in an ad campaign for Suitsupply. “The shoot was filmed completely underwater and I had to dive dozens of times to get the perfect shot,” says Wessels. She also proudly launched Elle Macpherson’s lingerie line in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa. Now: On her off days, Wessels stays active by playing volleyball and tennis with friends in Water Mill. A qualified skincare therapist, she hopes to one day open her own clinic out East, incorporating her passion for yoga. “My favorite style to practice is hot power vinyasa,” she says. On maintaining her heritage: A self-proclaimed “South African farm girl,” Wessels finds solace in the outdoors: “I grew up with nature, the ocean and animals, so I love to be surrounded by a natural environment.” She even brings her South African traditions to the beach: “In South Africa, we call a barbecue a braai, which we do almost daily, and I love being able to braai in the Hamptons.” Hamptons hangouts: Wessels can be found cycling to Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee in Amagansett (146 Montauk Hwy., 267-5555; jacksstirbrew.com) or spending time with friends at the Surf Lodge (183 Edgemere St., Montauk, 4835037; thesurflodge.com). “I recently discovered the cutest romantic little spot in Montauk called the Crow’s Nest (4 Old West Lake Dr., 668-2077; crowsnestmtk.com), with a bar on the sand. Man Vs. Machine “Autonomous Vehicles,” A new exhibit At the Sara NightiNgale gallery, sheds light on the relAtionship between humAn beings And their inVentions. By Kaitlynn Miller

52  hamptons-magazine.com

The Sara Nightingale Gallery “aims to be current and relevant while also taking risks,” declares owner Sara Nightingale, and she’s certainly demonstrating that with her thought-provoking new exhibition “Autonomous Vehicles.” “The phrase ‘autonomous vehicles’ is so loaded with metaphorical implications,” she says. “What is autonomy? Who has it? How will we as a society transition into abdicating our responsi-

bilities and freedom to machines? And if we’re creating and operating the machines, then who is ultimately in control?” The exhibit aims to address these questions through works by artists such as Perry Burns, who examines the effects of social media on society; Yuliya Lanina, who explores the invasion of privacy associated with tools such as cloud computing; and E. Adam Attia, who photographs his urban

“interventions,” such as posting false signs warning against drones, to “emphasize the relationship between an individual’s identity and the information they consume,” Nightingale explains. The exhibit will also feature work from local artists Scott Bluedorn, Cara Enteles, Christian Little, Alexis Martino, Scott Sandell, Christa Maiwald, and Evan Yee that focuses on similar issues at the nexus of technology and

society. “Autonomous Vehicles,” says Nightingale, “is a chance to evaluate who is in control—God, humans, political systems, or machines—and what percentage each plays in our collective and individual destinies.” “Autonomous Vehicles” will be on display from August 23 through September 14 at the Sara Nightingale Gallery, 688 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 793-2256; saranightingale.com

cool fusion with the opening of zu, the global asian-fusion-meets-club phenomenon finds a home in southampton.

Restaurateur Zach Erdem, who owns the buzzy 75 Main, knows that dinner in the Hamptons doesn’t always follow the standard ritual of ordering an appetizer, entrée, and dessert before quietly heading home for the evening. For many guests, dinner is just the beginning of a festive night filled with dancing, DJs, Champagne,

54  hamptons-magazine.com

and celebrity sightings. Kozu, the Japanese fusion hot spot that Erdem opened in Southampton this summer, caters to this crowd. “Why doesn’t Southampton have this type of restaurant?” he recalls asking himself, citing popular New York City spots like Nobu and Zuma that blend high-end food with a club vibe.

“People want to come out for fun, to see beautiful people, to enjoy themselves all night.” The 250-seat Kozu offers Hamptonites this sort of bacchanalia. But before the party starts, you can find guests filling up the dining room and patio overlooking Main Street. Much of the fish is flown in from Japan, and it’s likely you’ll see plates of crispy rice—a dish of

rectangular cubes of compressed sushi rice that’s been quickly fried and topped with yellowfin tuna, a dab of tobanjan, and a serrano pepper—at every table. Head chef John Keller’s menu also includes Asian dishes with a seasonal flair, such as the summer corn and lobster salad with a corn “pudding,” shiso, and yuzu dressing. On weekends, you’ll

see guests overflowing into Summer House, the restaurant’s latenight lounge, featuring a patio with white-linen daybeds surrounded by hydrangeas. “We want everyone to feel like they can stay all night long,” Erdem says. “It’s the best of the dinner and party combined.” 136 Main St., Southampton, 283-7575

COMING UP ROSÉS ONE OF THE EARLIEST PROPONENTS OF ROSÉ, MICHAEL ROMANO IS INTRODUCING THE EAST END TO HIS OWN VINTAGE, MAISON BELLE CLAIRE.

Michael Romano at Dockers Waterside with his own Maison Belle Claire rosé, which is now sold all over the Hamptons.

56

HAMPTONS-MAGAZINE.COM

During the Hamptons summer, rosé is ubiquitous. People are drinking it on the beach, in restaurants, over dinner at home. But as Long Island-based wine distributor Michael Romano will tell you, it wasn’t always that way. He made the Hamptons fall in love. Romano grew up drinking wine in an Italian family. He was introduced to rosé at a young age, but was dismayed that the only type you could find in New York was “pink, soda pop-y” white Zinfandels. When he was old enough to travel on his own, he headed to Provence to chase the wine he loved. “I couldn’t believe how world class it was,” Romano says. “They weren’t drinking white wine, they weren’t drinking red, they weren’t drinking beer. They were all drinking rosé.” After two years of haggling, he had 200 cases of a popular southern French brand, Château Minuty, shipped to the Hamptons. It sold out within two weeks, with his main buyer being André Balazs’s Sunset Beach. From there, the word spread. Other restaurants and retail shops in the Hamptons wanted it. Then Manhattan wanted it. Then people from all over the world wanted it. “And it all started on Shelter Island,” Romano marvels. Now, Château Minuty is distributed by spirits giant Diageo, so Romano has another project: his own brand of rosé named Maison Belle Claire, with a more prestigious version just released. It is available all around the Hamptons, in 18 US states, and in places like St. Barth’s, St. Maarten, and Aruba. “I created a tremendous monster, but it’s a great monster,” he says. “With my own brand, I’m going to have another world fire going on.” maisonbelleclaire.com

east endless get lost in the dog days of summer with beach bites and the kitchen star atie lee.

What was the most fun about writing the Endless Summer Cookbook? I’m constantly inspired by the farmers of our area. This is one of the few places where you can truly eat farm-to-table. It’s a phrase that has become so overused, but here we have the most incredible produce, seafood, chicken farms, dairy farms, vineyards, even sea salt farmers. When I was writing my cookbook, I would just go to the market and load up, then come home and play with all the goodies. What attracted you to food and then cooking? I grew up in a family that was constantly cooking and talking about food. We love to eat, and I got lucky enough to somehow make a career out of my passion. Who in your life inspired you and made the biggest impact on you? My grandma is such a strong woman. Not only did she teach me how to cook; she also taught me to take chances and always challenge myself. She went to college when she was in her late 50s because she had always wanted a degree. That takes courage, and I really admire her for that. Where do you love to shop for ingredients? I am at Green Thumb (829 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 726-1900; greenthumb

58  hamptons-magazine.com

organicfarm.com) almost every single day. I really like the fresh sausages at Peconic Prime Meats (235 N. Sea Road, Southampton, 4884697), and I buy bread from Carissa’s Breads constantly.

The honey wheat bread is the stuff dreams are made of. Do you have a favorite go-to spot out East? My go-to is BuddhaBerry (125 Main St., Sag Harbor, 808-3888; buddhaberry.com).

I seriously think I might have an addiction. I’m so happy when they have peanut butter fro-yo. I cover it in hot fudge, more peanut butter, and crushed Reese’s. I can’t get enough.

a private residence, our practice is based in the belief that great design generates from an in-depth understanding of who the occupant will be. Inspired design is the result of a collaboration of designer and developer or home owner. The authenticity and differentiated design that we are known for is the result of our true belief that every project is unique and that the success of any design is the result of an individually crafted solution. Our residential design begins with graciously proportioned floor plans that create a "wow factor" that are then brought to life by meticulously crafted interior design concepts. Iconic details, such as vanities sculpted from a single block of marble at Barbizon, monumental wood portals at Walker Tower, nickel and artisanal glass dressing tables at 200 East 79th Street, or uniquely forged bronze hardware at 443 Greenwich, create homes that have an attitude and point of view. The development projects that we design typically outsell in price and speed when compared to other products and they become market makers in their specific markets. This is never a specific goal of ours, but we do know that high quality design and great fi nancial success for our clients can result in spectacular solutions.

store for the future?

Intelligent, inquisitive, socially responsible clients who want to push the limits always inspire me. Working with people such as Harry Macklowe, Michael Stern, and Nathan Berman, who have a commitment to creating important and significant architecture and design, inspires everyone in our fi rm, all 105 of us. Design inspiration comes from being open to global influences. I travel frequently to fi nd new materials not typically incorporated in New York projects, to meet and learn from craftspeople that have been creating great design for centuries, and to be open to learning about techniques and detailing indigenous to other parts of the world. When traveling on safari to Botswana, every shower had teak floors. The warmth of the wood underfoot and the visual richness, led me to incorporate teak shower floors in the master bathrooms in a Flatiron District condo project. The legs on the powder room vanities at Walker Tower are based on a sink I saw in a Parisian jazz club I visited in Paris that I sketched in my notebook 12 years before we designed the project. And most inspiring, is my partner and husband, John Cetra. After over 30 years of collaboration and partnership, his extraordinary talent and wisdom never ceases to amaze me.

A The ultimate luxury of technology in

residential design is a means to create a better quality of life: wellness, flexibility, and more personalization for individuals. The idea that a building's environmental systems can promote wellness has come. We are incorporating humidity into residences for the care of artwork and more beautiful skin; private elevatoring that provides the ultimate luxury; and we are designing home spas directed toward occupants' particular health and wellness requirements. We have designed 443 Greenwich Street as the ultimate private club. An underground driveway leads to a valet parking garage where residents then enter private elevator lobbies that take one directly to your apartment. The elevators are designed so that once you get onto any elevator, it will not stop until you enter your apartment. This provides the luxury of privacy. In the private residences we design, we provide humidification systems that are beneficial to people's health and respiratory systems, while also providing an optimized environment for art and the added benefit of adding to the stability of fi ne materials such as flooring, wood paneling, and fi ne fabrics such as silk. Walker Tower was the fi rst multifamily building to incorporate this luxury.

winning design of One Madison as well as Walker Tower, and the new Lincoln Square Synagogue, what buildings in NYC are most inspirational to you? And will our skyline continue to rise to new heights?

A

Historic buildings always capture my heart having studied architectural history before becoming an architect. My favorite building in New York right now is 443 Greenwich, a turn-of-the-century New York City landmark with a land marked garden courtyard that we are converting to condominiums. Occupying almost an entire block in Tribeca, the building's monumentality and majesty has inspired us to reimagine the building into probably the most exclusive private "club" in New York. The vitality of New York dictates that the skyline will forever change. Just as there is the New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission, I wish there could be a watchdog commission that protects our skyline. Our skyline has always been altered by skyscrapers, from the Woolworth, Flatiron, and Chrysler buildings, which in their times were considered daring and radical. As you know, we build towers and I think they can be inspirational. One Madison was really the fi rst generation of new slender towers in the last 10 years. I hope that our colleagues creating new heights will be sensitive to the skyline context.

decades on how you approach a ground-up redevelopment project? And what would be your dream building to renovate?

A

Our practice has always been grounded in socially responsible, sustainable design. Without fanfare and before the LEEDS label, we have created buildings and spaces that celebrate local materials and deal sensitively to the environment and client. Sustainability then became a fashion and marketing tool. Today, society at large has made this sensitivity an integral part of socially responsible living. Strategies we are currently incorporating in home design include exterior sun shading, incorporating large landscaped courtyards to generate cross-ventilation and to assist in fi ltering air, building roofs that minimize storm water runoff, selection of high performance window and wall systems with greater operability, re-use of existing materials within a building and use of local stone and wood that require less fuel to fabricate and transport. One of the major sources of positive sustainability is the adaptive re-use of existing obsolete buildings. The Lever House, an early modernist gem on Park Avenue, would be a dream to renovate. The mastery of the tower setting back on a landscaped podium and its location would create the most exclusive apartments in New York.

STYLE OF THE HAMPTONS

A RARE FIND THE DUO BEHIND WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND TALKS THE HAMPTONS, HERMÈS, AND THE STATE OF VINTAGE.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND

BY LAUREN FINNEY

For editors, designers, and other fashion personalities, the retailer and fashion resource What Goes Around Comes Around is well known—since 1993, they’ve been providing industry insiders with one of the most extensive archival fashion libraries on the planet. There is also the original store on West Broadway that caters to those seeking out the perfect military, rock ’n’ roll, or Americana piece of vintage to round out their wardrobes. But since that first inception, owners Seth Weisser and Gerard Maione have expanded the WGACA business into so much more. “What’s changed for us most is that when we originally opened, the idea of vintage was very clear to a specific translation of how each era’s style was identifiable,” says Weisser, the company’s CEO. “The breakdown was really black and white.” But they noticed that as “we really got into the later eras, fashion started being more about the brands themselves. For the last seven years, it’s been moving more towards a designer-based platform for us, because the consumer is very comfortable with the brands we are offering.” That they’ve seen a tremendous shift toward accessories isn’t surprising—luxury accessories have been reputed to be more financially stable over time îî

than a real estate investment. “The demand for Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and more is far exceeding the supply,” says Maione, who holds the title of chief creative officer. “On the resale market, a brand-new Hermès bag is often worth more now. It holds a large amount of value and collectability, and our customers treat it as an investment.” Continues Weisser, “Previously, it was always a typical cycle when things would come back—i.e., bohemian, black and white, mod—and now fashion is either luxury or disposable and less trend based. But we’re always able to satisfy the trends. Our selection and curation is very specific, piece by piece, and we believe it’s the piece and not the trend that will fit the modern wardrobe.” That means shoppers at the East Hampton store could find everything from a rare Chanel 1960s necklace to a Stephen Sprouse Louis Vuitton bag, with vintage tees and Levi’s sprinkled in. Says Weisser, “East Hampton has been a test model for this shift in vintage, and we evolved it to become a luxury vintage store. It’s very clean and elegant, not what you expect from a typical vintage store.” From there, the duo have expanded their empire to five stores, including one in Roslyn, New York, and one in Kuwait, and have Beverly Hills and Miami on their radar for later this year, with Beverly Hills being “our biggest project to date at 3,800 square feet,” says Maione. The pair might seem an unlikely team to be hunting for the best luxury vintage worldwide, but Maione insists it’s highly addictive. “There’s always something new and fresh, and it’s a very selective process.” Adds Weisser, “There’s no retail store in the world that has collected and represents all these brands in the way we do. It’s creating a new experience for the customer to be able to look at Chanel next to Christian Dior next to Saint Laurent, and to have an incredible range of opportunities available with our fashion experts to help them navigate the unique shopping experience.” As for what will be flying out of their stores this fall, they both answer, “Gucci and Saint Laurent.” 48 Main St., East Hampton, 324-0874; whatgoesaroundnyc.com

Since 1995, Poupette St. Barth has been providing visitors to St. Barths with colorful printed caftans, rompers, cover-ups, and other resortwear that embodies the playful yet refined spirit of the island. Now owner Poupette Giraud has chosen East Hampton as the location for her first yearround American store, a bright, cheery boutique that opened this summer. “We have a great relationship with our customers, who discovered the brand in St. Barths but wear it to destinations all over the world,” Giraud says. “Many of them spend their summer in the Hamptons. The response to the East Hampton store has been incredible—like a homecoming! Both are beautiful vacation spots with incredible natural beauty for people who love the beach, the ocean. They’re both symbols of a certain lifestyle—of summer, freedom, and luxury.” The same words could be used to describe Giraud’s pieces themselves, which combine French sophistication with a laid-back beach vibe in, for example, embroidered ruffled cotton skirts, crinkled tanks, and pom-pom-trimmed shorts—a Giraud signature trim for many years before this summer’s pom-pom invasion. The shop also stocks her proprietary tropical cotton collection as well as a new lace series and colorful, eclectic beachready accessories, like tasseled necklaces. Giraud has come a long way from her first shop at the stylish St. Barths restaurant Le Tamarin; her designs are now sold in many of the globe’s most exclusive stores. Her flagship in Gustavia sits in a row of luxury designer shops, and the same is true of her new location on Main Street. “A ROAD TRIP IS THAT IDEA OF FREEDOM AND DISCOVERY.” —STUART VEVERS

A SPRITZ TO 75 YEARS! THIS FALL, COACH REENTERS THE FRAGRANCE GAME WITH A NEW YORK-INSPIRED EAU DE PARFUM.

To mark its 75th anniversary, Coach pays homage to its Manhattan heritage with a fitting new scent of contrasting notes like raspberry, soft Turkish rose, and dry suede musk. Here we speak with Coach Creative Director Stuart Vevers on what excites him about fragrance and why Chloë Grace Moretz is the perfect muse.

Similar to your Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear collection, Coach Eau de Parfum explores a journey. It’s that idea of freedom and discovery. I’ve always seen the Coach girl as having quite an eclectic sense, so I love that a road trip gives the idea of picking up pieces along a journey and putting them back together in a very personal, individual way.

How does the fragrance honor the brand’s 75th anniversary? This is a great way to share the new direction of the brand with a bigger audience. And that’s what I’m most excited about working with fragrances—I get to touch something that’s going to speak to a lot of people. Why was Chloë Grace Moretz selected as the

face of the campaign? There’s a sense of optimism about her. She’s got an ease and an effortlessness that really speaks to a fresh way of looking at luxury. Coach isn’t a jet-set luxury brand; it’s rooted in reality, and I think Chloë has that about her. Americana Manhasset, 2118 Northern Blvd., 516-365-2777; coach.com

MADE IN RIO FRESCOBOL CARIOCA BRINGS A BRAZILIAN TWIST TO LAID-BACK BEACHWEAR. BY BYRON CORDERO

78

HAMPTONS-MAGAZINE.COM

Inspired by the architectural movement that redefined the look of Brazil’s cities in the early 20th century, Frescobol Carioca, the luxury lifestyle brand, embodies the spirit and style of Rio de Janeiro. This summer, its newest collection, Modernismo, makes its way to the Hamptons. Found at Sunbarth and carried by Sunset Beach on Shelter Island, every piece is

easily translatable to all parts of the isle. Launched in 2009 with simple handcrafted beach bats, the Brazilian brand has grown to include not only beachwear and accessories, but also casual wear that reflects effortless, escapist, and cool carioca culture. The prominent motifs in the Spring/ Summer 2016 collection give a nod to the prolific Brazilian architect Oscar

Niemeyer, who pioneered the country’s modernismo movement with his sinuous buildings, inventing his own expressive and seductive version of modernism. Prints called Sidewalk are reminiscent of iconic Brazilian sidewalks, the most famous being Copacabana (the tiled mosaic pavement that runs along Copacabana beach in Rio) and Ipanema.

Says cofounder of Frescobol Carioca Harry Brantly, “Our shorts are made with high-quality Italian polyamide, which is about 20 percent thinner than the material used by our main competitors. The tailored fit replicates the sartorial technique used by Savile Row tailors.” Sunbarth, 14 Jobs Lane, Southampton, 873-4121; mrporter.com

This summer, Kelly Kirk of Therapy Life & Style celebrates 10 years at the helm of her Southampton boutique (she has another location in Sayville), but she’s been in the fashion business much longer. She has worked for Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and the trend retailer LF, and she even owned Offshore Surf & Sport in Southampton at one point. But the combination of beach living and a thriving boutique is what’s kept Kirk going for the last decade. “I was raised in Rockaway Beach, but I’ve been a Southampton resident since I was 17,” she says. “I went to Southampton College, and once I figured out what the Hamptons was, I never really left!” The Southampton shop, located in the Masonic Lodge on Main Street, began as a small venture in the courtyard of Jobs Lane and has moved several times since then. It’s been in its current space for three years, and Kirk enjoys being one of the few year-round stores in town. “I rely on the locals heavily,” she says, “as much as I do the summer crowd.” It’s also a place where mothers and daughters can shop together. “I don’t want to put an age on who is buying our stuff,” Kirk says. “At Therapy, what you’ll see is what you can’t find anywhere else. I don’t want to sell what the store next to me has.” That means one-of-a-kind pieces from select designers and artisans worldwide, and small runs of styles in each of her locations. 38 Main St., Southampton, 259-2555

GeorGina LeiGh BLoomBerG has always been consumed with sports—as an all-around athlete growing up, a sports fan, a student of the game, and a professional equestrian who has climbed the ranks to the elite level of the sport. The 33-year-old, talking with me recently from Dublin, Ireland, where she competed in a team equestrian competition, frequents the Hamptons as often as she can, but not as much as she would like. The youngest daughter of former New York City mayor and billionaire Michael Bloomberg, Georgina juggles her busy schedule between training and traveling throughout the world competing; volunteering on many boards, working to save the lives of animals; and most importantly to her, being a single mother to her 2 1/2-year-old son, Jasper. Her home base is in North Salem, New York, where she has her own stables with 15 or so horses, including show horses, a few retired ones, a few rescue horses, two rescue mules, two rescued miniature horses, and of course, a rescued goat and pig. After a busy summer competing, the athlete/mother/ author/philanthropist will be back in the Hamptons to compete in the Hampton Classic, August 28 to September 4, one of the largest and most popular outdoor horse shows in the United States. Bloomberg loves the Hampton Classic for several reasons, not least because it gets her out to the East End of Long Island. “It’s a great horse show, a classic show with lots of traditions,” says Bloomberg, whose best finish at the Classic was third place in 2013 while she was five months pregnant. “The show attracts a special crowd which includes people who usually don’t come to horse shows, many who haven’t seen show jumping before. It’s a great, fun crowd, and nice that they like it and follow us and support it.” Bloomberg’s father has a house in the Hamptons and is a passionate golfer and a member of several private golf courses in the area. Golf is a sport Bloomberg hopes to play more of one day. She recalls her “tomboy” childhood, where she grew up playing ice hockey and baseball with

the boys, and bonded with her father because of her interest in sports and her athleticism. She was so passionate about the subject that she studied sports business and marketing, as well as studio arts, graduating with a BA from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2010. “I was the only girl in the ice hockey and baseball league as a kid,” explains Bloomberg. “As a teenager, I played varsity soccer and basketball at Spence. I always loved sports—playing them, watching them (I’m a fan of the Knicks, Rangers, Giants, and Yankees), studying them. I’m fascinated by sports in every way. It’s a world I’ve always loved!” “My father was the sports guy,” she continues. “He took me to my first baseball game, ice hockey game. He was excited to have a girl who adores sports as if I was the son he never had.” (Bloomberg has a sister who is four years older, whom she describes a more of the “girly girl.”) Bloomberg was introduced to riding at the age of 4 by her British-born mother, Susan Brown, who rode. Bloomberg won her first competition when she was 6 years old. “I hated it at first,” she remembers. “I was scared of cantering. I lost in my very first competition, felt terrible, and hated the feeling of that... Some kids would have walked away at that point, but for me, it was the opposite. It made me go back to the barn and work harder and do what I had to do to prepare myself to win. I soon won my first competition, and I’ve been hooked on the thrill of winning every since.” Growing up in Manhattan, she would spend most weekends riding at Old Salem Farm in North Salem. “I actually was unsure if I’d pursue the sport. I worked hard at it, but I was also pursuing other things. Becoming a professional was not what I dreamed about doing,” she admits. But she was winning at every step of the way. She won Best Child Rider awards at every major horse show on the East Coast. She began doing jumpers in 2000 and won the United States Equestrian Federation Talent Derby in 2001. She was a member of the gold medal-winning North

American Young Rider Championships team for Zone 2 in 2002 and then won the individual gold medal in 2003. “Winning the individual gold medal in the North American Young Rider Championships had always been my dream. Growing up, that had been my first major goal. My trainer, Jimmy Doyle, started working with me in 2002 and is still with me. He asked me back then, ‘What do you want to do this year, and we’ll figure out how hard you have to work to get there!’ I told him I wanted to win that individual gold medal. And I worked harder than I’ve ever worked my entire life. And it worked! And that taught me a lot. I realized there is no substitute for hard work. You figure out what you want to do and then work your ass off to get there!” Bloomberg savors that crucial learning experience. “That was a great lesson to me both in the riding world and in my personal life. It gave me the confidence to know that I can be at the top of the sport if I worked hard enough.” The “eye-opener” hit Bloomberg when she became the youngest rider to qualify for the World Cup Finals at the age of 20. “That made me realize I could really make a career out of it. I was getting sponsors. I realized I had to be all in and that it would be a full-time commitment.” Once she made that decision, her career took off. She immediately made a few US teams to compete in Europe, won the Maxine Beard Award—given to a rider that the US Equestrian Team thinks has the potential to represent the US in the future—and competed at the World Cup Finals. She has won more than 10 Grands Prix over the years and won her first championship medal (bronze) at the Pan American Games in Toronto last summer. Equally impressive as her rise in the world of equestrian sports is the mental discipline and competitive spirit she embraces, which have helped her get there. She emphasized how tough an athlete has to be mentally in order to pursue and compete at the highest level. “For any athlete, having your mind be incredibly strong to overcome fears, pain, illness, or anything that may affect your performance is so important. There are

times when I’m nervous or scared or tired, and you have to shift into another gear and put all of that aside. I try to put mind over matter.” As much as Bloomberg shines in the equestrian world, it’s not a sport she hopes her son will pursue when he’s old enough to ride, based on the ups and downs of competition. “He has learned to respect and appreciate animals, and that will be a part of his life, but I’ll never push him into it. When he’s a little older and if he decides to ride, that’s fine, but it’s a hard life. It’s grueling. It’s not something I’d wish on one of my children. It’s a sport that I love, but it’s very difficult.” Perhaps the most challenging time was her comeback after breaking her back in a fall from her horse in August 2002. It was the first time she was forced to take a few months off from riding. “During the time off, that’s when I decided I wanted to turn professional. It recharged me, gave me a new beginning. The fall and recovery was very difficult mentally, but physically, it made me stronger. I respected my body more. And at the same time, the first time I got back on my horse I had to question whether I was afraid or not. It was odd, mentally.” It was an experience that made her really think about what she wanted and to what degree she would pursue the sport. Upon returning after the injury, she says, she was scared for maybe a day, and then she got over it. Winning the bronze medal as part of the USA Team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto made all the pain and sacrifice worth it. “Going to represent my country and coming home with a medal was a thrill of a lifetime and an experience I’ll never forget, but it also taught me to continue raising the bar for myself and to never put a limit on my dreams.” As for what the future holds, Bloomberg is setting her sights on qualifying for next year’s World Cup Finals. “If I don’t make it, then I will move on and set a new goal. You learn from each blow you get in life. I’ve had a lot of hard moments in this sport—failures, injuries, you name it. But each time, I come back stronger!”

SCREEN SIREN

The 1959 California Ferrari Spyder: So Choice. Keen readers will instantly recognize this vintage Italian sports car from its commanding cameo in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Of the sexy coupe, Bueller tells us in the movie, “The Ferrari: It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.” With a price tag close to $10 million, few possess the ability to acquire such a legendary stallion, but Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, bought this 1959 California 250 GT Spyder at auction five years ago. Much like its famous Hollywood counterpart, Lutnick’s Ferrari spends plenty of time out of the garage, enjoying the road—just where it belongs.

Some people would say that actually driving a car such as this is sacrilege. Howard Lutnick: This isn’t a trailer queen. Driving it doesn’t make it less perfect. I love to drive this, and when I’m out in the Hamptons, I make sure it gets some miles. I probably put on about 150 miles every year. Are you a speed demon or a slow cruiser? I’m 55 years old, so I like the slow cruise. The car is just made for that. It’s got a manual top, which can take about 20 minutes to put down, so I only drive it on perfect days. I like to take it to East, South, or Bridgehampton, and when I bring the car into town, people say thank you. They think it’s nice to bring it out. One of the best things to do is park it on the street and let people come up and take a look. It’s clearly recognizable as a Ferrari, but do many people immediately know the model? The license plate answers that question now. I had it for a while, and people would always ask what it was, so I had a vanity plate made that lets you know it’s a ’59 California. Since you got it at auction,

we assume it was in fantastic condition. It was in lovely shape, and I made it more lovely. With a car like this, it’s always a meticulous exercise to keep it running well. In 1959, vehicles weren’t as reliable, so now, 57 years later, they really need lots of love and care. I’ve got detailed mechanics who go through that V12 and inspect all the engine belts, the starter, the carburetors, and everything else to make sure it’s all running perfectly. What drew you to the car in the first place? It’s just sexy. I love the deep metallic green with that diamond-stitched cream interior. Those chrome side vents and the covered headlightsÑthere’s nothing more beautiful. It’s great because it’s a matching-parts car, so everything is all original and came together. It was also a race car, though I can’t recall where it campaigned. Given how fast these 250 GTs are appreciating, would you ever consider selling it? I’m a good buyer of things, not a good seller of things. I’ve sold some businesses, but I’ve never sold a car. Especially such a thing of beauty like this.

This Pristine 1974 Ford Bronco Gallops Around the East End. The most iconic Ford is undoubtedly the Mustang, but bucking its way into second place is the Bronco, specifically the first-generation models. With a delightfully boxy body, those round headlights, and the ability to go topless, it’s no secret these SUVs were—and still are—quite coveted. Rob Wiesenthal, founder and CEO of Blade, came upon his beloved Blue Oval in an unorthodox manner.

We hear you won your Bronco. True story? Rob Wiesenthal: Accurate. I was a senior at the University of Rochester in 1988, and we were playing poker when a guy owed me in the middle of the game. He was short $200, so he pointed to an old, rusted Bronco by a tree and offered to throw it in. I won the hand, and the car. Did it need a lot of love to get in working order? I later realized it would have been cheaper to buy a nicer Bronco and restore it. It was a heap of scrap. The suspension, engine, and firewall panels were shot. It was in a state of disrepair that could be classified as barn-find condition. I had it flatbedded to get restored. I had previously raced Formula Fords in the US and Europe, so I thought I knew everything. [Laughs] I could probably have a fleet of Broncos for what I ended up spending on this one. It looks like it was well worth the effort. It came out well. We were able to get a number of original parts, including the mono

speaker in the dash, an original AM radio, and a great biscuit-colored interior. I love the paint, which is an original flat navy blue from MercedesBenz back in the ’60s. I have a real emotional connection to the car since it grew up with me since I was 20 years old. We’ve seen the good and bad times together. Do you have a favorite memory with the Bronco? I love it with the top off. A car that has no top is a very different experience than a targa or a convertible or a sunroof. It’s exhilarating. I also have great memories of my kids and their interactions with the car. My 19-year-old son grew up in a baby seat in the car, and my 5-year-old daughter loves it and can’t wait to ride around in it. She knows how unique it is. What are your favorite spots to cruise out East? I live in Sag Harbor, so I take it all around here. It’s my go-to beach car, and I really don’t take it beyond the Hamptons. It’s great on the run to Montauk, and anytime the AM radio can pick up a signal from Connecticut is a banner day.

This Handmade Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet Is Craftsmanship Exemplified. After World War II, Germany was busy rebuilding its factories, trying to kick-start a crumbled economy. Among the brands eager to resume full operations was MercedesBenz. The vehicles rolling off the assembly line were properly handmade works of art. It’s no shock that Marvin Chudnoff, a real estate developer and investor, gravitated toward this 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet. With only 1,100 produced over three years, the four-seat convertible is a very rare tri-star, and Chudnoff is fortunate to have found this gem.

We hear you have a penchant for vintage Mercs. Marvin Chudnoff: I have six in total, some 220s, some 280s, all spanning the 1950s and ’60s. They’re such stunning cars, but my favorite is the ’59 220SE. It’s considered one of the prettiest cars that Mercedes made. What do you love about it? Back in 1959, Mercedes had 2,500 staffers in their woodworking department in Stuttgart, Germany. These were skilled cabinetmakers who were responsible for the fully handmade wooden trim on every car. As a result, the 220SE has this gorgeous elm and ash interior and dash. That’s what a car should be—the real stuff, not the plastic

crap you see today. How did you come across the car? I bought it six years ago from the original owner. He was a German fellow, living in San Diego. It was never restored and had about 51,000 miles on the odometer. I got all the records with the sale, which was nice. The engine, a 2.2-liter inline six-cylinder, was in good order, though it needed some new bushings and gaskets, and the paint was good since it was always on the West Coast. You own some new cars along with your vintage ones. Which do you prefer driving? I have a newer MercedesBenz SLS gullwing. It’s a

real technological tour de force. But newer cars are like Swatch watches: They always tell the time, they’re never off, and they never break. The old cars, like the ’59, are temperamental, they overheat, they don’t always start, you can’t go across country. [But] they have character. I love that. Where is your favorite place to drive? If it’s sunny, I get the top down and run out to Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton for some coffee, and sit in the car and read the paper. The Candy Kitchen isn’t more than two miles from my house, but I’ll drive 15 miles home. In a car like this, you always take the long way home.

A ’60s Muscle Steed Races Around Bridgehampton. When you think of iconic American muscle cars, a firstgeneration Ford Mustang must top your list. Upon its debut in 1964, the Mustang birthed a new class of car, the pony car. Sharp styling cues, timeless fascias, and a potent Windsor V8 engine under that elongated hood meant the early models were often imitated, though rarely duplicated. Absurdly popular decades ago, Mustangs are still an object of lust and envy today—something cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank is quite familiar with. Frank, director of the Fifth Avenue Dermatology Surgery & Laser Center and the proud owner of a 1966 convertible, shares how he fell in love with his Detroit stallion.

What drew you to the car? Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank: We needed a good, old-school muscle car for the beach. I found this one in 2009, after it had been in the original owner’s family since the ’60s. It was a perfect fit, and I became the second owner. I surprised my wife with it. She’s from Michigan and always wanted a Mustang. When I brought it home, she cried. Was the car well maintained? Yes. For a 50-year-old car with 108,000 miles, it’s running great. It’s all original; even the leather on the steering wheel is from the factory. I’ve got family in the car repair business who help me, and we coddle it a bit—it doesn’t do well in the cold—but the engine was clean and it didn’t need any real restoration. Old American muscle is built to last. What’s your favorite part about owning a vintage Mustang? You realize how dangerous driving was 50 years ago. We take things like windshield wipers and power steering for

granted now. Then again, that’s part of the beauty of older cars; everything is easily handled under the hood. The steering, the transmission—everything is palpable and easy to understand. You’re not messing with a complicated computer or electronics system that can go haywire after a few years. Where do you drive the car out East? I take short cruises to town or to the beach. I’m not driving out to Montauk or anything. And it’s something only for nice weather. We put the kids in the back, along with my son’s surfboard, and off we go. It’s fine to get it sandy and do whatever we want. We take care of it, and it takes care of us. What kinds of reactions do you get when you’re out and about? Whether it’s an 80-year-old man or an 8-year-old girl, it’s all smiles. Everyone knows the classic Mustang. You can drive a new Lamborghini and you’ll either get a grin or a sneer, but in something like this, everyone’s happy to see it.

Au Naturel Designer Deborah heimowitz warms a branD-new home in water mill with clean-lineD furnishings, rich finishes, anD a comforting pastoral palette.  By Jean nayar PhotograPhy By Costas PiCadas

It’s not every day that an interior designer has the opportunity to shape a home from the ground up. So when Deborah Heimowitz was asked recently to create the interiors for a new house in Water Mill, she worked diligently with her clients, Dr. Irving and Ellen Grauer, to refine architectural and material choices at every step along the way. “The three of us worked like a team,” says Heimowitz. “We added to and deleted from the builder’s spec sheet, repositioned certain elements, and offered input on details.” The result is a family weekend home that suits her longtime clients to a T. Designed and constructed by well-known Hamptons builder Joe Farrell, the 7,800-square-foot, fivebedroom shingle-style home sits on a pastoral lot that opens onto a serene rolling lawn (with the horse farm of Today show host Matt Lauer next door). Having worked with her clients on their Manhattan apartment a dozen or so years ago, Heimowitz understood their tastes and values well. “They’re both very detail-oriented and fashion-forward,” says the designer, who presented the couple with three possible furniture schemes. “They love clean lines and neutral colors, and they chose to go with a transitional look to define the vibe.” She adds that here they were ready to ease into a setting more contemporary than the traditional style of their Upper East Side apartment.  îî

Interior designer Deborah Heimowitz says her clients were ready for a more contemporary environment, so she combined clean lines and neutral colors, with abstract art to provide pops of personality.

Once they had settled on the spirit of the interiors, the designer collaborated with the Grauers to enhance the standard finishes and architectural elements with characterrich surfaces, like handmade Tunisian field tile in the kitchen, bluestone pavers on the patio, Wallace Creek fireplace surrounds in two living areas, and a rich brown stain on the wooden floors throughout. The trio also decided on the furniture— including upholstered pieces from Holly Hunt and case goods by Thomas Pheasant and Baker Furniture’s Barbara Barry Collection—along with plush fabrics and engaging accents that make the home as relaxing as it is beautiful. “They entertain a lot and often host out-of-town guests or their two grown children and their friends,” says

Heimowitz, “so they wanted spaces that were comfortable enough to put your feet up but chic enough to feel grown up.” Elements with rich textures—like rabbit-fur pillows, shagreen leather chairs, and ribbed silkand-wool rugs—and a nature-inspired palette of khaki, saddle brown, pale gray, and touches of indigo graciously link the interiors to the outdoors, while vibrant abstract art from the owners’ collection and sculptural light fixtures, including a tiered chandelier (“a dramatic showstopper” the designer calls it) in the double-height entry, inject pops of personality throughout. In the end, says Heimowitz, “we had so much fun, my clients said, ‘Let’s redo the apartment in New York,’” where subtle reflections of their Water Mill home are now beginning to appear.

“They wanted spaces that were comfortable enough to put your feet up but chic enough to feel grown up,” says Heimowitz, as in this guest bedroom (top left), while a nature-inspired palette of browns, grays, and greens connects the interiors to the outdoors (top right).

SOMEWHERE THAT’SGREEN LANDSCAPE DETAILS OWNER MICHAEL DERRIG TALKS TRENDS AND TASTES IN OUTDOOR SPACES. BY RACHEL RAIOLA

112 HAMPTONS-MAGAZINE.COM

How we know him: In 2000, Michael Derrig founded Landscape Details, one of the Hamptons’ premier landscape design and building firms. Its full-service approach encompasses every aspect of a home’s outdoor spaces, from initial design to ongoing maintenance—the company even has its own tree farm. “We do everything from large-scale planning

to small, intimate garden spaces,” he says. “There’s a vast set of skills that we need to be able to pull a whole landscape together.” Getting started: A graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in landscape architecture, Derrig says, “I was always interested in building things. On my 10th birthday, my mother bought me a circular saw, and I built my first brick patio

when I was 12 years old and living in a condominium in New Jersey.” Form follows function: “Key elements to a good design are the right proportions, the right special concepts, the right structure to how the spaces are going to unfold. The aesthetics have to complement the basic needs of the site.” What’s hot? “People are looking for a simplified

landscape. It’s clean lines, more geometry, and sleek rectilinear designs. It goes along with the modern and transitional look of indoor spaces—that’s being brought outside, too. But the biggest thing, I’d have to say, is that bluestone is out and white stone is in. Fifteen years ago, everybody put in bluestone patios, but nobody wants it

anymore.” Environmental consciousness: “Sustainable and toxicfree landscaping is important to us. We try to come up with the best creative solution with the least impact on the environment, and everything is site-specific within its own microclimate.” About the East End’s organic trend, Derrig adds, “I’m seeing a lot

more vegetable gardens.” Office appeal: “I’m excited about our new office in East Hampton. It’s only two minutes from where I live, and it’s an old restaurant that I converted. And I built a big garden out back with a reflecting pool where we can host events.” 103 Montauk Hwy., East Hampton, 725-0018; landscape details.com

Homecomings

Give me a little snapshot of the Gold Coast. How do you characterize it? Peggy Moriarty: There is an interesting now-and-then concept that’s beginning to evolve. We have the most beautiful estates, large pieces of property, but I feel like the newer homes that are being developed tend to be taking over the old estates. The new homes are magnificent and beautiful; people don’t have the time, or the energy, to renovate some of these really fabulous old estates. Tom Samet: I try to get my clients to focus on older homes, and the quality of lifestyle they

114  hamptons-magazine.com

can have in these homes, and try to update them for how people live now. They’re also a big value; the quality of homes you can get for the dollar is still very strong. Marilyn Rose: But you have to have a deep pocket to be able to not only restore them, but maintain them. But I do feel that the way things were made in the ’20s, there’s no comparison to the houses that are being constructed now. Just to have the ability and the good fortune to see how things were done at their peak is an absolute blessing. Uri Hason: Ten years ago, I built the Preserve at Woodbury—32 brownstones [that we] made

look old, with the copper, with the iron, with the bricks, and we created a modern lifestyle inside. Because of the way we did it, it will be historical one day. Francesco Marasco: Everything has evolved. Things have moved more toward a timeless look that will withstand—it won’t be in style today but gone tomorrow. People are taking the old-world

look and modernizing it, but still keeping that traditional feel. Do you find people are more drawn to traditional as opposed to modernist? Maria Babaev: I think it’s a marriage between modern and traditional. Very easy, open spaces, very comfortable. People want every inch of their home to be utilized, especially

families with young kids. When you entertain, you want spaces where everyone feels included. TS: When my mother was head of the zoning board in Old Westbury, no houses could look too much alike in a certain proximity to each other. She was worried the developers were building houses that were too much alike, and she helped up the acreage to fouracre zoning from two-acre. MR: I’m finding across the board that even people in traditional homes are looking for a more transitional look in certain parts of the house, so that they used to collect antiques and now I see antiques dealers going out of business. I’m hoping it will come back, because I love collecting antiques myself. UH: People with families don’t like four acres, because the neighbor is so far away. People like one acre, half an acre, three-quarters of an acre. The parents can have more control of the kids. They’re moving from three acres to one acre just to have neighbors. And their first question: How many kids in the neighborhood? Are young families typical of your customers? MB: Uri is so right on the money. I am just amazed at the tremendous role children now play in the decisionmaking of the entire family. UH: This is why every house in Dix Hills we build, we build the parents’ quarter and the kids’ quarter. So the kids are away from their parents a little bit, not that much. What’s the demographic of these people coming from New York City, from Long Island? TS: They get bumped out of Manhattan as a real estate market, and they need the third bedroom. The public schools out here are generally pretty good compared to the public schools in Manhattan. A lot of it is children-driven. PM: I believe there are two types of buyers coming to the Gold Coast. The ones who need to be in and out of the city real fast, they’ll go to Dix Hills. The further north you come up—Lloyd Harbor, Locust Valley especially—we’re going to find larger pieces of property, bigger homes, people who want that. They îî

usually start off saying, “How fast can I get to the parkway?” or “How long is that train?” Manhasset is on fire. This is the American dream. My daughter put it perfectly. She said, “I’m sick of my kids playing in Central Park.” UH: I have people in the Hamptons who are buying a house for $3 million who were living in an apartment in the city. They’ll walk into the house when it’s finished and they cannot believe it. I can see it in their face. And before they bought the house, they said, “Oh, we’re going to come in the summer and the weekends.” They are there every week, in the winter as well. FM: I think it varies. The homes I’m working in, it’s people who have made a good amount of money and they’re fulfilling a dream. There’s a great estate right now… they’re taking something old, from the 1920s, and restoring it. And as many beautiful homes as I walk into, there’s nothing like walking into that home, because I think it’s almost got a spirit of its own. What do you think about the future? Is it going to be more of the same? Is it going in different directions? UH: I think the future will be stronger because people will find the value more and more in Long Island. People who grew up in Long Island as a kid, I think they want to stay, or if they go to the city, they’ll want to come back. TS: We cannot underestimate the value of a good school district. That is usually one of the first questions people ask, because they don’t want to put their kids into a private school, if they don’t have to, after being in Manhattan. MB: And even if they do put their children in a private school, for resale value, they still want their property to be in the top school district. FM: People are working harder and it’s going to open up possibilities to the younger generation who are coming up. And they’re going to want to carry on whatever was built beforehand. MR: As long as [the Gold Coast] is still protected and not overbuilt and we can still maintain the integrity of this area, then it will continue to grow and thrive.

In their desire to own a home unlike anything else in the neighborhood, some people are earning bragging rights not with colossal size or avantgarde design but by thinking small and looking to the past. Twenty years ago, Dr. Andrew Carlson, a heart surgeon, and his now late wife commissioned Peter Pennoyer Architects to

design this cozy yet stately waterfront residence whose forebears include such historic American mansions as Mount Vernon and Monticello. “It has pediments and a colonnade facing the water; it’s more classical than most shingled houses,” says Peter Pennoyer. “And it’s on quite a dramatic scale for such a small house. It has

an open view looking down on the water and the harbor. It’s all about the site. The metal spears on top of the cupola are whale harpoon spears.” Pennoyer is a virtuoso at designing traditional homes inspired by the past. While still in graduate school, he worked with acclaimed American traditionalist architect Robert A.M.

Stern, and he has written four award-winning books on early 20th-century architects. This compact masterwork at 66 Ram Island Drive on Shelter Island’s Little Ram Island is appropriately named the Lighthouse. “It is such a custom, elegant house, when you look at the moldings, the beautiful trim, the height

of the ceilings,” says Carol Tintle, the East End regional manager for Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, who shares the $5.395 million listing with the owner’s son-in-law. “It has such tall windows. I don’t know anyone who would spend the money now on such special millwork.” The double-height ceilings in the gracious dining room and foyer summon a bygone era. Imposing gates and manicured grounds suggest the summer retreat of a business tycoon or former president. “It’s a very private, very grand-looking house,” Tintle says. “On the bay side, there is a walkway that leads down to a 110-foot dock.” The driveway is paved with Belgian block, and she adds that the grounds contain room for the addition of a pool. Inside, fine detail work is omnipresent. “Even the kitchen has beautiful moldings,” Tintle says, “and the light from the windows above the cabinets shines down.” The cupola on the main residence—whose architecture nods to scholar housing designed by Thomas Jefferson for the University of Virginia—contains an office with sweeping views of Coecles Harbor. There’s also a separate two-door garage with a spacious guest room over it. “Magazines tend to feature ultracontemporary homes that are very beautiful and exciting,” says Tintle, “but not everyone wants these great big houses with big, big prices.” She suggests that with only three en suite bedrooms, the Lighthouse might be perfect for “a highly sophisticated couple from Manhattan who want an elegant weekend getaway... It will attract the right person.” Carol Tintle, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, 28080 Main Road, Cutchogue, 734-5439; danielgale.com. The East Coast mecca for entertaining in style is getting some gracious tips this summer from its Pacific counterparts. Hudson Grace, a home décor favorite founded in San Francisco in 2012, is opening its first pop-up store at Serena & Lily Beach Market in Wainscott. A hostess in need of some last-minute chic can stock up on everything from olive oil, linen cocktail napkins, serving pieces, and martini glasses to the brand’s signature HG candles and Gio Ponti flatware. “Our products are contemporary,” explain founders Monelle Totah and Gary McNatton, “but their timeless quality allows them to become heirlooms for the next generation.” Totah gets inspiration from browsing through markets in Europe, sometimes producing contemporary versions of vintage pieces, like the brand’s berry bowl or white candelabra. Hudson Grace’s streamlined items are the perfect complement to Serena & Lily’s colorful textiles. Together, they can change a neutral-toned beach house into an indoor extension of the sand and ocean. “More and more kitchens nowadays are being designed with glass cupboards or just shelves,” says Totah. “Hudson Grace china and glassware are designed with that concept in mind.” On August 27, Totah and McNatton are hosting a book-signing party at Hudson Grace’s pop-up for The Serial Entertainer’s Passion for Parties by Steven Stolman, out in September (Gibbs Smith; $30). 332 Montauk Hwy., Wainscott, 5375544; serenaandlily.com

AWESOME BLOSSOM THERE ARE MORE THAN FLOWERS BLOOMING AT EITH PIERPONT’S PIERPONT BLOSSOM FARM.

“One of my most favorite is peonies,” says Keith Pierpont when asked about his favorite flower. But then he quickly adds, “I also love hydrangeas… and dahlias... and ranunculus… and garden roses.” It was perhaps an unfair question to ask someone who has spent his entire professional life in the flower business. After working in New York City for a florist and as the head of a special-events company, Pierpont decamped to the East End and purchased farmland in Wading River in 1998. Now encompassing 13 acres, Pierpont Blossom Farm provides cut flowers throughout the Hamptons and at farmers markets from West Hampton to Montauk. Although it was planning a retirement party for General Electric CEO Jack Welch that spurred Pierpont to move east (“I worked for 36 hours straight and blew a gasket”), he still loves entertaining and organizing events. He and his wife, Anastasia Casale, owner of the Sag Harbor Florist and Gift Shop, recently launched Sapore e Fiore (“flavor and flower” in Italian). Up to 12 guests pick flowers from the farm, then receive a lesson in flower arranging, while Pierpont (also a gourmet cook) prepares them a five-course dinner, paired with wines by a local vintner. Says Pierpont, “Cooking, flowers, then music are my first loves.” Pierpont Blossom Farm flowers are available at farmers markets throughout the Hamptons.

CHART YOUR OWN COURSE TAKING YOGA OFF THE MAT AND ONTO A STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD WAS A NO-BRAINER FOR JESSICA BELLOFATTO. BY TRACEY TOOMEY

A yoga practitioner for 24 years and the owner of the East Hampton studio KamaDeva Yoga, Jessica Bellofatto has adored the beaches of the East End since she was a child. “I’ve always loved the ocean and being on the water,” she says. “I started paddleboarding about eight years ago, and it was therapeutic for me. I did a lot of longer-distance

ocean paddling with a friend of mine who is also a yoga teacher, and when we would take a break on the board, we started doing yoga postures. It was fun! I started teaching it, and it grew from there.” Bellofatto offers Full Moon Paddles in the Hamptons, in which participants paddle across the harbor as the sun sets and the moon rises, then anchor to a “floating studio,” where Bellofatto guides them through “moon salutations” and a stand-up paddleboard yoga

session, followed by a short meditation. The evening paddles have become so popular that she now offers them twice every full moon. Bellofatto’s mission is “to support your healing as you chart your own course to happiness,” and in the Hamptons, that course is bound to involve the water, rejuvenation, a bit of adventure, and refreshments awaiting you on the beach when you return. 15 Lumber Lane, East Hampton, 604-1382; kamadevayoga.com

RETREAT YOURSELF

Jessica Bellofatto was an early proponent of combining yoga with stand-up paddleboarding, which increases the need for balance and allows you to refine your technique, all in a calming natural setting.

If you’re ready for a little more adventure and want to prolong your Hamptons summer, Jessica Bellofatto will lead a retreat to Montauk the first weekend of October. It’s a three-day “escape to the East End” at Sole East, and it’s jam-packed with “land yoga” on a beautiful wooden platform overlooking Fort Pond, SUP yoga, meditation, pranayama, hikes through Hither Hills State Park, and beach walks.

the best as we laugh, get centered, and get fit all at the same time. I make my weekly run to Aerin (83 Main St., Southampton, 353-3773; aerin.com) to shop her perfectly curated collection of everything I need and grab the perfect hostess gifts. I pick up my boys from camp, and we hit Sip N’ Soda (40 Hampton Road, Southampton, 283-9752; sipnsoda.com) for the best cheeseburgers and milkshakes, and then we walk down to our favorite bookstore, Southampton Books (16 Hampton Road, Southampton, 283-0270; southampton-books.com), and each buy a book to get lost in. In the late afternoon, we go for surf lessons with the Flying Point Surf School (516-885-6607;

flyingpointsurfschool.com). The boys surf with my husband and their friends while I take our two dogs on a long beach walk on Road G. I slip out early and go to Peconic Prime Meats (235 N. Sea Road, Southampton, 448-4697) to get the most delicious burgers and steaks for our kickball cookout that night at our house. We cook and connect with friends while our kids play a mean game of kickball in the yard and then race around for fireflies.
