LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

NEW YEAR AFTER NEW YEAR, I write down two resolutions: one, drink more water, and two, buy holiday gifts early. Rate of success: I am constantly dehydrated and shop, at the most, 48 hours before “deadline.” So this year, things are going to go down differently. Forget the water— I’ll just hydrate with whatever beverage is close. Instead of finding the perfect (last minute) present, I vow to cook a meal, go to a movie, whatever… Simply spend more quality time with the people I love. Our cover story stars (see “Insta-Boston,” page 82), social media and otherwise (Olympic gold medalist, anyone?), echo the sentiment of prioritizing real-life, real-time experiences. While dazzling Instagram images and pithy tweets continue to expand the next frontier of

everything from social capital to business branding, we all know nothing can ever replace “keeping it real.” Now more than ever, maybe. Whenever you peel back the veneer of success, however you define that, you more than likely discover a killer work ethic, an eye on the prize, and a past fraught with failure. I had the pleasure of hearing entrepreneurs Sir Richard Branson, Jessica Alba, and Maria Sharapova speak at the recent Forbes Under 30 conference (check out the stories on Boston Common-Magazine.com). Each were wildly candid about how their risks (Branson dropped out of school at 16), mistakes (Sharapova was forced to take a suspension from tennis), or hardships (Alba suffered from debilitating asthma as a child)

propelled each to “win” at life on their own terms. Big Night is a great example of that. The signature charity event raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, a nonprofit organization committed to helping youth thrive by providing them with adult mentors. Chart-topper Jason Derulo will perform at The House of Blues on February 4, and I can’t wait to go because, along with the star-studded crowd, there will be a chance to meet many of the kids whose lives were changed by a mentor who helped turn obstacles into building blocks. You may catch some of the kids’ faces on Instagram, but rest assured that there is substance behind each smile. Wishing you a holiday season filled with “real” love and light. Hydrate well.

Sephora’s newest location opened at the Van Ness building in Fenway with a preview event and ribbon-cutting ceremony. I also had the pleasure of attending an exclusive event hosted by Royal Jewelers and Giovanni Carestia, president North America of Officine Panerai, that had the Italian brand’s exquisite watch collection on display. Shopping for others during this time of year is at the top of our list. I’m looking forward to checking out the Prudential Center’s new tower during its string of highly anticipated store openings—Under Armor, Tesla, Polo Ralph Lauren, Shinola, Eataly... This addition will prove to be a new go-to shopping destination—and lunch spot! Speaking of new… Things are moving faster than ever before, so in this issue we look at what’s to come in the world of Boston digital by spotlighting our city’s most influential social media stars (see “Insta-Boston,” page 82). What are some of the materials you enjoy working with? Alpaca and embroidered textiles for upholstered walls and couture draperies, artisanal blown glass for custom light fixtures, and all types of crafted metal finishes. What are some design trends you’re seeing around town? Very contemporary interiors with a softer edge. Oriental rugs are making a comeback because they help anchor and define spaces in large, multifunction rooms.

In both cases, simple, thoughtful gifts that recall a shared experience or interest. What’s the worst gift you’ve ever received? That you’ve given? Received? A gift card. Given? The same. And I still feel terribly guilty about it. Boston recently hosted its Fashion Week—are there any fashion trends you’re seeing around town? Far too many oversized logos. Advertising the brand you’re wearing isn’t style, it’s consumerism at its most garish.

What inspired you to start Shop Your Closet? After managing Holiday Boutique on Charles Street for seven years, it seemed like a natural transition to go from styling clients in a boutique to doing it on a more personal level in their homes. What are you incorporating into your styling this winter? I recently picked up a jacket and blazer by British designer Katherine Hooker, one of Kate Middleton’s go-to designers. All of her pieces are easy and versatile.

What are you seeing in the Boston real estate scene right now? Just when I thought the Back Bay was slowing down because of lack of space, new buildings like 30 Dalton are created out of parking lots. Unlikely hotspots like Somerville and East Boston are also picking up tons of speed with new properties creating bidding wars. Do you have any personal connections to the featured properties? 30 Dalton is in my backyard, and my husband has a regular card game in the Millennium owners lounge. The Pierce is a place after my heart—when you say heated outdoor swimming pool, I am in!

You think your six-inch Jimmy Choos are tough to strut in? Try walking on a rubber, fiberglass, and leather platform. Architect Zaha Hadid wore them (the Nova, SHOWN) just fine; of course, she designed them herself for Dutch footwear brand United Nude. You can see those, along with gaggles of other spectacular creations, at “Shoes: Pleasure and Pain,” a special exhibition dedicated to the cultural

significance, technical development, and transformative capacity of shoes, running through March 12, 2017, at the Peabody Essex Museum. Presented in partnership with Dress for Success Boston’s shoe drive (November 16–27), the exhibit showcases nearly 300 pairs of vintage and contemporary footwear from around the globe, including the Vivienne Westwood blue platforms worn by Naomi Campbell during her infamous 1993 runway fall. “It’s really quite fascinating to see the range of creativity that fashion

from different times and places has called out for something that basically was intended to be purely functional,” says the museum’s deputy director, Lynda Hartigan. While many fashion houses come and go or change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of forty without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers—while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s upcoming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular obsession in Hockney’s

aquatic series). Key pieces include pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration, of course, is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients— who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic ankle-length pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry buildings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eyepopping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardrobe. When Christian Louboutin enlisted architect Thomas Heatherwick to design the containers for his three new fragrances, including Tornade Blonde, the results were stunning undulated glass bottles,

each with a central aperture. “It was no longer a single volume, but became a ring of perfume,” says Heatherwick. “Christian wanted to a create a flow of fragrance within the bottle.” Other designers have played with the toppers to create artistry as well as functionality. Influenced by the brand’s Intarsio jewelry

A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. When the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way down New York’s Central Park West and Sixth Avenue on November 24, the celebration is set to be even more exuberant than usual to mark the 90th edition this year. “We like to make sure nothing is duplicated— we’re giving people a full breadth of entertainment from the moment the turkey crosses the starting line to the time Santa

officially rings in the holiday season,” says Amy Kule, executive producer and parade official. The parade reaches 50 million viewers with its nationally televised NBC broadcast, and 3.5 million line the streets in New York to witness it live. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures

the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”

To everything there is a season. The squad of sure-shot photographers behind IG Boston knows this better than most. Their work is a highly curated Instagram-only collection tracked by 45,000-plus followers; members who submit photographs must be approved by four moderators (represented here by Mic L. Angelo, a hip-hop artist, MIT IT expert, and consummate photographer). The theme? Dazzling images of beauty: asymmetrical cityscapes, peaks of color-pop foliage, snow-drenched cobblestone streets, surf-worthy beaches, a single spring tulip… All of Boston and her many moods. Turn, turn, turn. Selection process: The four of us have to agree on the shot and if it is worthy enough to represent the entire IG community. We want to cultivate great photographers. We want people to inspire each other. Exclusivity: We have 462 members right now, [selected from] 7,000 applicants. The moderators are impartial and cannot post their own work. Founding cause: [Photography hobbyist] Brian McWilliams founded IG Boston out of his love for Boston and photography. The IG Boston look: We look for the kinds of photos you won’t see posted anywhere else, because those are the kinds of photos that only a resident of Boston would know about. We want to create an intimate feeling. The analog element: We are working on more [nondigital outputs]. We’ve had a gallery exhibit where all of our photographers submitted photos and we showcased them. We’ve held panel discussions, too. Insta-insights: A lot of it is just knowing what kind of theme you have and sticking to it. Knowing what your audience likes. Being careful about when you post—people look at a feed only at certain times of the day. Be consistent with your captions. And the hashtags you use are very important. Best city locations: I love nighttime images and sunrises. You can’t miss along the Charles River, especially on the Cambridge side and around the BU Bridge. Newbury Street and the Back Bay are always great places to shoot. IG goals: We are interested in making IG Boston more of a social force within the New England social scene, having it be a focal point where people can go for work or to find an awesome photographer. Keys to success: Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, a love for what you do, an amazing support system, and confidence. Cult of personality: It’s important to be a good role model for the younger generation. Social media is a huge part of everyone’s lives; I make sure to post content that sends a positive message and is consistent with my beliefs and values. Social network: I want my fans to be inspired to dream big and find something they love. I want people to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin and not compare themselves to others. How do you begin to describe chef Jamie Bissonnette? While “food lover,” “reality show star,” and “entrepreneur” are good starts, “creative genius” and “zesty humorist” certainly round out the menu. Chef and co-owner of Toro, Coppa, and his newest eatery, Little Donkey, Bissonnette also cooks up a social media storm to his 45,000-plus followers. On food: I love food. Food is good. I grew up intrigued by food and flavors. In the restaurants, seeing the reaction of people eating food we have cooked for them is a driving, intangible thing for me. Business development: Partnering with Ken Oringer helped me in my cooking, and in seeing the ways to make a business successful. Having a partner that can teach and push me, as well as listen and collaborate, has been the key to our growth and success. Public face: Social media, for me, is all about sharing and having fun. like the sneak-peak into a menu sometimes. I think the most memorable moment was the first time a guest came in and asked for a dish using an Instagram post. I was stoked. City satisfaction: I love seeing what’s happening at the farmers’ markets, and when I discover an off-the-beaten-track restaurant, bar, or spa I didn’t know about. And I love, love, love seeing what other restaurants are serving. Fashion illustrator Holly Nichols attributes all of her formidable, sudden success to the forces of social media. The founder of Holly Nichols Illustration, Nichols owns a studio and online shop but also whips up social media campaigns for the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue, Disney, and Barneys New York, among others, sharing her creations all the time to her 544,000 followers. Nichols says her online popularity happened quickly, even accidentally. We say it’s no surprise at all. Dual-purpose: I combined my two passions, fashion and art. My goal is for my work to allow people to enjoy fashion in a unique way. It eliminates the dressing room struggles that many women face, and lets them enjoy fashion on paper instead. Growing a business: My business developed by accident. My account started as a way to document my portfolio. Soon I was being asked by the public about where they could purchase my work, and getting inquiries from brands on how they could work with me. Soon after, I quit my day job. I can

happily say I’m living my dream of being a full-time professional artist! The look: My social feed is very clean and consistent. I try to photograph everything in bright, filter-free, natural light so that the viewer can clearly see my artwork in its true colors. I want them to feel like they’re at my desk sketching with me. Going viral: There’s a lot of thought behind each post. I figured out the best way to leverage the right hashtag, content, posting schedule, and who to follow—that’s important, too. You certainly have to be disciplined about it. Visibility: I get almost all of my opportunities through social media. Even less than 10 years ago, artists had to work for years to get their work noticed. Now, it can happen as soon as you hit share. Most memorable moment: Without a doubt, it was going to New York Fashion Week with TRESemmé and being able to sketch looks from the actual runway instead of from behind my desk. It was an absolute dream. Best comment: “Wow, her legs are long.” Favorite refuge: The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (gardnermuseum.org). You heard it here first: DJ Brek.One is going places—mostly in the night, and always with a playlist. The UMass Amherst graduate never imagined making a living out of deejaying, nor did he predict utilizing a social media platform on which his fans and competitors—he currently has more than 2,000 followers—could study his every move. But now, the unimaginable is coming to life. The recipe: I mix it up. When I started, no one would play a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, then Stevie Wonder, then Kanye, then Prince, and just throw everything out there in one party. I play musical icons. Good music is ageless music.

Owning the night: I’m probably like the top-booked guy in the city at this point. I play all the major venues: Royal, Bijou, Cure, Good Life, and Middlesex will forever have a place in my heart. I was the music curator for the W hotel. I also played for Pharrell in Vegas, and for Kanye and Jay Z for the Watch the Throne tour. Virtual socializing: I look to make my social media my brand [for] when you can’t speak to me [directly]. It’s colorful, very particular, and specific. I want people to understand that I’m delivering the highest quality of product. It’s chosen, mindful; it may be in-the-moment, but it’s still representative of me 10 years from now. My end goal is creating bespoke and very real experiences. Musical outlets: I’m actually a huge jazz fan. I’ll hit Wally’s Café (wallyscafe.com) and Scullers in Cambridge (scullersjazz.com). Celebrity interior designer and bon vivant Ken Fulk, 51, has spent the past 15 years creating gorgeous spaces and lavish parties—featuring performers such as Dita Von Teese and Sting—for clients ranging from designer Jean Paul Gaultier to social media titan Sean Parker. His new book, Mr. Ken Fulk’s Magical World (Abrams, $75), showcases his interior design expertise, architectural knowhow, and party-throwing sass. We asked Fulk, who often jets to Provincetown from his San Francisco home, to give us the lowdown on throwing a smashing holiday event. Why Provincetown? I first visited Provincetown in my early twenties, and I have continued my love affair with this heartbreakingly beautiful sliver of sand at the tip of Cape Cod ever since. How do you approach throwing parties? I design a party in the same way I design a home or restaurant—both are truly about the experience more than the aesthetic. I consider the “moments” that happen as you walk through a space and encounter different rooms and areas. There should be

One month it could be haute couture; the next, inventive frozen treats. You just never know with The Shop, a pop-up shop space open through January at the corner of Newbury and Dartmouth Streets that hosts a variety of ever-rotating businesses, ranging from traditional retail shops to wacky concept stores. Created by Isenberg Projects and Jamestown Properties, The Shop doesn’t just provide clients with a space and fixtures, but also offers guidance. Deliberately designed with a minimalist, neutral aesthetic, the space can be customized by each retailer, and was launched in mid-October with high street fashion courtesy of Wellesley boutique Gretta Luxe. “The space has great curb appeal, and the location and timing was perfect for us,” says Gretta Luxe’s Lauren Begley. “Plus, we were [able] to recreate our Wellesley boutique’s atmosphere, which is elevated-chic [but] also inviting and cozy. We brought in [our own] rugs, leather furniture, grey shelving units, and mannequins.” Next up, The Shop will host men’s and women’s apparel retailer Brunswick Park (November 21–27), athleisure line York Athletics (November 28–December 4), gelato and sorbet producer Gelato Fiasco (December 5–11), and high-end boutique hotelier Lark Hotels (December 12–18). “Many people are daunted by the undertaking of opening their own pop-up,” says Emily Isenberg of Isenberg Projects. “We wanted to take that learning experience and marry it to an active space to share that with clients.” Call it a win for all! 144 Newbury St.; isenbergprojects.com

During winter, the “Green Mountain State” of Vermont is anything but: It is, quite literally, snowwhite. And that is a good thing. Killington, Stowe, and Sugarbush resorts, all in Vermont, offer some of the best skiing and premier winter amenities this side of Aspen, and all under three and a half hours from Boston by car. Here we take a look at the skiing but also the shopping, lodging, eating, drinking—that is, not just skiing but living the ski life.

STOWE MOUNTAIN RESORT

Ten years ago, Jack Ryde, the late fourth-generation owner of Swedish bed manufacturer Hästens, set out to create the greatest bed in the world. That sweet dream came true with the company’s blue-checked masterpiece: Vividus. “When we launched Vividus, we never intended for it to be a bed that stops evolving,” says Jan Ryde, Jack’s son and Hästens’ current owner and executive chairman. This fall, the company re-launches its flagship bed, whose construction requires 320 hours of work from four certified craftsmen focused on every detail, from the northern Swedish redwood frame to the hand-sewn layers of

Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island hosted more than 300 guests at the UMass Club in Beacon Hill in support of its Wine and Wishes event. Former New England Patriots player Matt Light and Fox25 news anchor and reporter Vanessa Welch emceed the event and energized the crowd with a live auction and raffle to help grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Wish-children Gabriel and Brooklyn were among the evening’s honored guests, as well as Wish-dad Paul Blaney, who shared the inspiring story of his son Connor’s wish to have a treehouse.

Nearly 7,000 people attended the Museum of Fine Art’s #mfaNOW Overnight: Launch Party, the first of four. Crowds began lining up at 5 PM and didn’t wane until after 3 AM. The party featured exhibition openings for “UH-OH: Frances Stark 1991-2015” and Christian Marclay’s “The Clock,” live graffiti painting outside by MerkThose, music and sound performances by Substructure, food trucks, drawing in the galleries, and even 3 AM “Insomniac Olympics” under the moonlight in the MFA’s Calderwood Courtyard.
