who flock to Zilker Park. Harkey, photo manager for Austin-based festival producer C3 Presents, chose this life after being captivated by a music show while hostessing at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in the late 1990s. “[The drummer] was out of his mind, and I remember

thinking, ‘I want to feel that way about something in my life, and I want to remember how this feels right now.’” She took photo classes, built a darkroom, and persuaded Stubb’s to let her try her hand as venue photographer. When C3’s Charles Attal, a

partner at Stubb’s, cofounded the ACL Fest, Harkey was on board. After 15 years, Harkey looks for ways to keep it fresh. She and her team create themed challenges, such as photographing the best mustaches or T-shirts of the day. The long hours and

heat can be grueling, but Harkey loves watching how the music affects the crowd. “It always warms my heart because people are more willing to just let their worries go and have fun,” she says. September 30–October 2 and October 7–9; aclfestival.com

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

“So many social engagements ... so little time.” Remember this scene in the classic Raising Arizona where John Goodman, who plays an escaped convict, says this line to a dazed Nicolas Cage? My husband texted me this clip after I told him I was feeling overwhelmed by my Google calendar. Not only did his response make me laugh, it reminded me that this is a good problem to have. Between the big festivals, the glamorous galas, and the delightful store celebrations, we Austinites are in for a full fall. My desk is covered in beautiful invitations that are just a hint at what’s to come (a special shout-out to publicist Sara Hussey, whose client invites are too pretty not to RSVP to). And as I write this, in early September, I have already been to two of the biggest events of the year: the Drivers of Style/Art of Fashion runway show that we hosted with partners Neiman Marcus and Lexus of Austin & Lakeway, plus the big after-party at The Kenzie; and the over-the-top, blowout debut of the gorgeous and massive RH Austin, the Gallery at the Domain Northside (look for photos of this talker in our next issue).

I am especially excited about this year’s Formula One at Circuit of the Americas. Like many Austinites, I was new to the sport when it arrived here five years ago but have become a huge fan. So you can picture my happy dance when we landed the amazing reigning world champion, Lewis Hamilton, as our cover star for this year’s Men’s Issue. In her fascinating interview with the global superstar, local writer Jardine Libaire (whose next novel, White Fur, comes out next spring) expertly taps into his cultural appeal and explores whether he could be the key to making F1 a bigger deal Stateside. On a personal note, I’m thrilled that the Texas Book and Austin Film Festivals aren’t happening at the same time as in years past. In this issue, I talk with charming director Paul Feig as well as new TBF literary director Julie Wernersbach about three of my current author obsessions. Having days set aside on my calendar to celebrate the written word makes me one happy editor.

This is an exciting time for Austin Way. In honor of the fifth year of the Formula One US Grand Prix being in our great city, reigning F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton is the leading man on the cover of our Men’s Issue. A headlining performance by another superstar, the one-and-only Taylor Swift, after the second day of racing, is sure to bring an even higher profile to this year’s F1 at Circuit of the Americas, where fans can also look forward to the debut of facility improvements. We love celebrating F1 at the magazine—our party last year included VIPs like Emmy-winner Regina King and Friends’ Matt LeBlanc—and we’re ready to do it even bigger and better again this October. The Men’s Issue is an ideal time to reflect on the different men I have been fortunate to become friends with in Austin. Chris Hendel, VP at Neiman Marcus, recently partnered with Austin Way on our Drivers of Style fashion event with Lexus of Austin & Lakeway; you can see some of the highlights from that night on Page 30. Also in this issue, on page 57, you’ll find out more about M. Ato, who has opened his first menswear store, League of Rebels, in the Second Street District. Other young men I admire are Stallion Capital Management’s Peter Croft, who is building the Stallion Texas Real Estate fund, and Will Bridges, who has

spearheaded the rebirth of the beloved Antone’s Nightclub. Men closer to my age are doing amazing things as well: Jeff Newberg at Endeavor Real Estate Group has just opened the impressive Domain Northside, and Jim Ritts’s Paramount Theatre will shine in October with its starring role in the weeklong Austin Film Festival (read our interview with honoree Paul Feig on page 35). To keep myself feeling young, I recently ran the Zilker Relays with a team that included Dean Doug Dempster at the UT College of Fine Arts and Jack McDonald, CEO of Upland Software. These gentlemen are just a few of the familiar faces who continue to make me feel at home in Austin. I look forward to celebrating this exciting time of year—full of festivals, galas, and events—with them. No other event celebrates the writing behind the TV shows and movies we love so much like the 23rd annual Austin Film Festival, October 13–20. In addition to a week of film premieres and screenings, the fest brings in the best in the business for panels and conversations, and it honors industry legends each year. Among the 2016 honorees are Marta Kauffman of Friends, Nancy Meyers (The Intern), and Paul Feig, known for Freaks & Geeks, Bridesmaids, Spy, and the summer hit Ghostbusters. Feig, an AFF veteran, also appears in the second book by AFF’s On Story Project: On Story— Screenwriters and Filmmakers on Their Iconic Films, out October 4 by University of Texas Press. Austin Way talked to Feig about the festival, the all-female Ghostbusters, and dealing with social media trolls. What do you love about the Austin Film Festival? The most fun I have is when I’m on a panel about a specific topic, and we can talk to these burgeoning writers about it. That’s what is so genius about AFF: It gets into the nitty-gritty of the craft.

You’re known for creating meaty roles for women. Why is that important to you? If you portray women as professionals and their problems are about trying to get ahead, trying to be legitimate, then that is a universal theme. Kristen Wiig’s character in Bridesmaids once was a business owner, and the audience is rooting for her to become that person again. In Ghostbusters, they have dedicated their lives to this passion they have. These are the most compelling stories that we can tell to help men get past this image of women that has been perpetuated by Hollywood. My movies have hardly any romance in them. You once said at AFF that Freaks & Geeks was so loved because we’re constantly re-living high school. Did it feel like that when dealing with all the

Ghostbusters vitriol? When it gets down to name-calling and personal attacks about my cast and their physical attributes, you think, ‘I am literally back in the locker room, trying not to get beaten up by guys that hate me.’ I’m not going to get chased out of the neighborhood, but at the same time you’ve got to put up with [hateful] people, and I wish there was a way to shut them up because they’re very harmful. How would you describe Austin? It has an energy that’s unlike any city I’ve ever been in. I can’t wait to get there because I’m so worn out from this movie; I get recharged when I go to Austin. Rounding it out are The Deck Nine Observatory Bar on the fourth floor patio and the subterranean Boiler Room, which serves old-school classics next to the original boiler. It’s hard to find a couple more involved in Austin’s culture scene than Celeste and Adrian Quesada. Music fans know Adrian as a cofounder of the Latin funk band (and former Prince backing group) Grupo Fantasma as well as bands including Spanish Gold, Brownout, and Brown Sabbath. His latest venture, the Echocentrics, will perform at Utopiafest (September 29–October 2; utopiafest.com) on the heels of the new album Echo Hotel, which NPR calls “a significant contribution to [Quesada’s] growing legacy.” Celeste, known for producing high-profile events, including the annual Austin Music Awards at March’s South by Southwest (this year’s iteration featured Renée Zellweger and Robert Plant), is focused on American Gateways’ inaugural awards gala (October 20) honoring immigrants of achievement, including filmmaker Elizabeth Avellan (americangateways.org). Next up: the popular gala fundraiser for the Sims Foundation in December. “We have separate, parallel, equal lives,” says Celeste, who is also a real estate agent with the Gill Agency dedicated to finding affordable housing for the city’s creative class. “Living and working together, we can bounce ideas off of each other when we’re at home cooking dinner.” The couple has two daughters, 6 and 10. Adds Adrian, “We both have the personality where if we’re not running an airport in our heads, we get restless.”

Long an overlooked chapter in Andy Warhol’s storied career, the iconic pop artist’s relationship with books gets its due in a landmark exhibit coming to the Blanton Museum of Art. With more than 250 objects, including many on public display for the first time, “Warhol By the Book” is the first of its kind in the US and covers five decades of Warhol’s work, from his days as a student to his years as a noted celebrity artist. Blanton curator Evan Garza reveals to Austin Way five highlights from the show, organized by Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum. 1. A Gold Book: One of Warhol’s

earliest books, A Gold Book

showcases the artist’s softer, delicate side with romantic sketches printed on gold paper. “What’s lovely about this is that you really get to see the subtlety in Andy’s hand, and what a beautiful illustrator he was,” says Garza. 2. FlAsh — NovemBer 22, 1963:

A portion of the exhibit showcases a suite of Warhol’s square prints narrating President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Colorful screen-prints of Jackie and JFK are paired with typewritten news updates covering the historic day. Originally assembled in a portfolio, the prints were intended to be flipped through like a book.

3. ANdy WArhol’s INdex Book:

This playful and interactive work, modeled after a child’s pop-up book, contains commercial brand prints from Warhol’s pop repertoire, black-and-white pop-up photos of the Velvet Underground, a 3-D rendering of Bob Dylan’s nose, and objects that spring out of the book with rubber bands. 4. 25 CAts NAmed sAm ANd oNe Blue Pussy: Inspired by the time

The age of añejo: As master distillers begin aging tequila longer, the rise of extra-añejos is placing Mexico’s national spirit on the top shelf amongst whiskeys and Cognacs.

Añejo tequila served neat has been a staple at Austin’s smartest bars since the category’s establishment 10 years ago. Pairing a year (or more) of barrel aging with tequila’s earthy, sweet agave complexity and peppery spice offers much for the drinker to savor. Building on this momentum, tequila houses are adding extra añejo expressions: These tequilas are aged over three years in oak to impart luxurious, rich flavor—an exciting

development for aficionados. A subtly brilliant reference point is Herradura’s Seleccion Suprema ($350), aged for 49 months in white oak barrels. Although it might evoke Highland single malt Scotch, the agave shines through with vanilla and peppery accents and a creamy finish. Two brands with local ties also offer variants of extra añejo. Austinite John Paul DeJoria’s Gran Patrón Piedra ($400) is aged in new American

and French Oak for four years, with a flavor profile Patrón manager of trade education David Alan calls “sophisticated [and] sweet, with a rich and complex earthy flavor, accented by light vanilla and fresh mushroom. The finish feels like it lasts indefinitely.” Austin-based Dulce Vida’s critically acclaimed extra añejo ($150) is aged for five years in Napa wine barrels and bottled at 100 proof. The resulting expression is bold and spicy, with oak and

caramel mingling with peppery agave. Befitting founder Eric Dopkins’s past at Deep Eddy Vodka, Dulce Vida in August introduced a line of lime and grapefruit-infused blanco tequilas. While other “lime” tequilas on store shelves are billed as liqueurs, the Dulce Vida product uses natural flavors and real juice to simplify mixology. Dopkins suggests “a nice splash of Topo Chico and a muddled jalapeño” as suitable additions.

As it moves into its middle teens, blue chip art fair Art Basel Miami Beach’s position in the global art world has never been higher. “Every show is marked by the high quality of galleries participating,” says Art Basel’s Director Americas, Noah Horowitz. “However, this year also affords an opportunity to look back at the show’s past 15 years and its tremendous impact on Miami and international engagement with the art scenes across the Americas.” Beginning with by-invitation-only VIP events on November 30—which bring out major-league collectors—and opening to the public on December 1, ABMB will bring together 270 galleries from 30 countries. The five-day fest also anticipates more than 77,000 visitors, including the usual boldfaced names (with bank accounts to match), such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. As the fair has grown, so has its distinct sectors, which currently include Galleries, Nova, Positions, Survey, Edition, Film, Kabinett, and Public, featuring outdoor installations and larger-scale works. As a university student in Ukraine, Musa Ato craved the tailoring quality he had been accustomed to during his uniform-clad youth in Great Britain. “I went to a boarding school where seven days a week you wear a necktie and a blazer, so that stays with you,” says the native Nigerian, who recently opened the brick-and-mortar League of Rebels, a luxury brand crafting smart, functional menswear that transitions from the office into evening. “I want to look good and be taken seriously. At the same time I want to be able to step into a bar right after and fit in,” he says. With a background in international business and an eye for fashion, Ato conceived the idea for League of Rebels in 2009. “Early in life, I understood the power of brands,” says Ato, whose globe-trotting background has given him connections around the world. The brand mirrors Ato’s own appreciation for wellcrafted suits, jackets, shirts, and accessories, using the same fine fabrics and European tailoring traditions that stitched the uniforms of his boyhood. Initially Ato operated League of Rebels as an online retailer out of Dallas,

where he attended the University of Texas, and then Los Angeles. He fell in love with the Texas capital while showing a collection at Austin Fashion Week in 2011. “I was just blown away because I felt like I wasn’t in Texas anymore,” recalls Ato, who was impressed by the city’s fast growth as well as its emphasis on independent brands. Ato teamed with the now-closed Edge Boutique to bring his line into a store for the first time, and then launched League of Rebels pop-up shops before choosing downtown’s Second Street District as the permanent base of global operations. In addition to the storefront’s ready-to-wear selection, which includes wrinkle-free fitted shirts as well as on-trend T-shirts, the brand offers a custom program for suits and shirts. The team works with clients one-on-one throughout the process, offering quality textiles, including worsted wools and cashmeres, in a range of colors and prints, with a turnaround time of about three weeks. “We want to make Austin home,” says Ato. “To get the full League of Rebels experience, you have to come to Austin.” 411 W. Judith Leiber Couture’s new boot-shaped handbags, made exclusively for Neiman Marcus, are stunning enough to tempt any outlaw. Encrusted in more than 7,000 colored crystals, the bags—the floral Belle ($5,495) and the pythonpatterned Cassidy ($5,595)—are modeled after the boots Paul Newman wore in 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. G

ap-toothed and diamondstudded, a lover of cherryred jets and bulldogs, the ruthlessly fast and masterful three-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton can be—believe it or not—really sweet. The 31-year-old international star still loves the world the way a child loves to play. In the United States, this spirit of his could do for the global mega-sport of F1 racing what David Beckham did for soccer. And Lewis, who will return October 21–23 for the fifth US Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas, loves it here, so the affection would be mutual. “Austin is awesome,” he tells us in his English accent. A Brit signed to the Mercedes AMG Petronas team, Hamilton is considered one of the greatest drivers of his generation. He is also one of the best compensated: Forbes ranks him 11th on the ladder of the world’s highest-paid athletes. Hamilton signed a contract extension with Mercedes starting this season that could pay out more than $140 million over three years. And this doesn’t include his many endorsements and licensing income streams, including IWC Schaffhausen, L’Oreal, and Monster Energy, among others. He started very young, as many F1 drivers do, competing on (and crushing) the British karting circuits from the age of 8. He knew from day one that racing was it. When asked how he’s evolved as a driver, Hamilton says he’s gained “knowledge of the way the world works, humility, road knowledge, and maturity.” But he stresses: “Today, I still drive with the same spirit I had when I was 8, with the exact same strength in my heart.” His ambition and mastery—with his aggressive approach to taking the curbs, he’s known as the king of overtaking other drivers--are pure and inviolable. And his ability to protect his talent from everyone, from the detractors to the parasites, might be the key to his mind-blowing success. After almost winning his maiden F1 season in 2007, the next year Hamilton became the thenyoungest driver in history to win the world championship. He claimed the world title again in

orn and raised in Stevenage, England, Hamilton was a child of divorce, and his father famously worked multiple jobs to finance his son’s career. Hamilton’s mother is “white British,” and his father’s parents came from Grenada in the 1950s, making his dad “black British.” Even though F1 is composed of drivers of many nationalities, Hamilton’s identity is often boiled down just to race. Early in his career, Hamilton was reluctant to talk publicly about being the first black man to win F1, but he’s reevaluated the burden of speaking about race that falls onto trailblazers like Venus and Serena Williams, Tiger Woods, and now Simone Biles and Simone Manuel. After watching Biles and Manuel in the Summer Olympics, Hamilton says: “I was so happy. That’s going to change things. They broke down the wall.” Talking about being black has become “a blessing,” Hamilton says, explaining that he’s come a long way in his outlook. As a black family in the racing circuits, “we weren’t welcome, not even when I was finally at the beginning of my F1 career. We were maybe tolerated. We kept our heads down; we did the right thing. Now I’m part of the founda-

tion of the sport.” Hamilton now speaks proudly of opening the gates in Formula One. “A beautiful African lady came up to me recently and said: ‘My son’s now racing. He wants to be like you.’ That’s so special. I’m not perfect, but I hope that I shine the right light in the right direction.” This candor and visibility are attracting a passionate Hamilton fan base in the United States, where Formula One is still a niche market. “I’m trying to help it grow [in America]. When I travel, I do see it growing. People recognize me.” COTA’s success is obviously a huge step in making F1 a household event for Americans. “We didn’t know what to expect in Austin,” he recalls, but he became a big fan of the city and the track. “It is amazing to be back. This track enables a real race-—and overtaking.” Can the United States tap into the long-form rivalry that fuels this sport? Can we feel the power of the massive investments—financial, emotional, national—that go into a team? In September, Liberty Media, owned by US media mogul John Malone, announced it will take over Formula One from a private equity group in a deal that values F1 at $8 billion. What this means for F1 in America-—Liberty has stakes in everything from cable companies and the Atlanta Braves to TicketMaster and SiriusXM, is still up in the air. Hamilton believes F1 could engage more of America if it would up its entertainment. “The Super Bowl is amazing, with the planes doing their shows, and Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. We have a lot to learn from the Americans.” COTA seems to agree; it has snagged both Taylor Swift and The Weeknd to perform after this year’s F1 races on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

both 2014 and 2015. Along the way, he’s broken record after record, putting himself in the company of F1 supernovas like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, and Michael Schumacher. We got to see him win the US Grand Prix here at COTA in the track’s inaugural year of 2012, and then in 2014 and 2015, with Hamilton sporting a black Stetson and a silver sheriff’s badge given to him by Italian-American F1 virtuoso Mario Andretti. Especially in the dominant Mercedes car, no one sees Hamilton’s chances at World Champ ending soon.

ut you can relate to Hamilton anytime you want through social media. Between Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram, Hamilton has over 10 million followers—and his Mercedes F1 team adds another 13 million who focus on his racing. Back in the day, “I never even contemplated that people would follow me, send me messages, or gifts or letters,” he says. “It powers me through the year when things get rough.” And it’s a wild iridescent online world he invites us to join. Back-flips into pools in Barbados, holy moments of solitude against city sunrises, backstage moments with hip-hop stars, crystal-blue afternoons on yachts. His posts reflect that modern hybrid of material abundance plus maxims about simplicity and grace and achievement. F1 drivers have not been as generous with their private lives as this; Hamilton stands alone. Bobby Epstein, chairman and CEO of Circuit of The Americas, tells us that “Lewis has been an exceptional ambassador for Formula One, raising the profile of the sport to new audiences around the world, while exciting established motorsport fans. As his brand crosses into mainstream recognition, we see increased interest--especially from women--in Austin’s own United States Grand Prix.” In this way, the global icon is transcending his own country, and his own sport. Social media is sort of a cocoon for him, incubating iterations of Lewis Hamilton, week after week, and he keeps emerging a new butterfly. “I love art, I love fashion shows, music festivals—I love creativity,” he puts it simply. He made an album, although whether he’ll share it with the public is “up in the air,” he says. “I listen to music all day. I can’t function too well without it… I love that I can express myself.” He’s been linked to Kanye West, Jay Z, and Pharrell Williams. “I love to connect with producers and musicians. They pull something out you didn’t even know you had in you.” He’s starred in style magazine spreads and has sat front-row at shows such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander Wang. His own tattoos are a splendor, from

Michelangelo’s Pieta on his arm to an African lion on his shoulder and music notes behind his ear. “Powerful Beyond Measure” is written across his chest, credited to the spiritual writer Marianne Williamson: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” He also loves women. Paparazzi enjoyed hunting him and his seven-year on-and-off (and off for good, it seems) girlfriend, former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger. Social media has showed him hanging out with Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Rita Ora, and Gigi Hadid, and romantic rumors constantly abound. Through the glitter and media mayhem shoots a pathologically precise sportsman. How is that possible—what’s less Zen than social media? “To him the world is not a distraction,” Mario Andretti told ESPN. “He needs all of life and vast interests to feel fresh and invigorated when he gets back to his job.” Hamilton is expanding his world by learning from a mosaic of heroes, like Senna, the saint of F1, and Nelson Mandela, who “was the greatest man… I met him, and I don’t know if I even said much.” Muhammad Ali is a role model because of his fighting soul and advocating of rights. Hamilton says he looked up to Christopher Reeve as Superman and

If I go through a day without learning something, I’ll go online to Wikipedia to look something up.” The F1 establishment and its fans relish drama, and yet they go back and forth. Lewis Hamilton is warned to behave but then adored for being larger than life. And now he’s returning to Austin, a city that loves the individual, and raises up the rulebreaker. COTA is an interesting outpost of the Formula One culture, which is a global society that has a hard shell of prestige and tradition, and a molten core of transgression. Lining up to see these drivers test mortality under the beautiful Texas sun goes against polite society, and that’s rock ‘n’ roll. But Hamilton, who watches the NBA and NFL and loves the building excitement over each season, understands the challenges of attracting more American fans to F1, particularly with the races happening at awkward times around the world and only one in the US each year. “You’re waiting for them,” he says, “which is hard. I know what my emotional state is at 3 am,” he jokes. Hamilton also appreciates the high profiles of American star athletes and thinks F1 could learn more about how to better market its drivers. “In racing, we wear a helmet, and it’s hard for people to relate to us.”

Nothing illuminates a room quite like Murano glass—the light dances and plays off of it, giving the room a dreamlike quality. And no one in Austin understands its power like Jean-Marc Fray, a French native whose eponymous antiques showroom has been a local design resource for more than 20 years. Among his vintage finds and European treasures is the largest collection of Murano glass in Central Texas. “While the New World was being discovered, Venice secretly invented a craft that would become a magical tradition—the first mirrors and glass objects were created, changing forever the course of humanity,” says Fray. “Created by generations of craftsmen on the island of Murano, the glass has been adorning palaces and noble homes since the 16th century.” At the center of Fray’s Murano collection are the stunning chandeliers he’s found from around the world. Among them is a Sputnik-style, multicolored piece (PICTURED) that dangles and teases 55 inches from the ceiling. It’s an eye-catching combination of old and new. The 30Th anniversary of The AIA Homes Tour showcases The ciTy’s brighTesT archiTecTural TalenT. By Samantha ReichStein

Austin architects love a challenge, and the 30th anniversary of the city’s AIA Homes Tour (October 15–16) celebrates some of the best examples of overcoming the odds. The tour by the Austin chapter of the American Institute of Architects is a self-paced event that showcases 12 of the most unique, modern, and inspiring architectural projects across the city. “Sustainability is no longer unique,” says AIA Austin Executive Director Ingrid Spencer. “These homes have an extra ‘wow’ factor.” Among the highlights is the 1,090-square-foot North Loop home that architects Rick and Cindy Black built for themselves, and later renovated, on

a triangular half-lot in 2003 after the city approved a small-lot amnesty program. “The mandate gave us the chance to explore ideas about relative size and scale, creating a house that is at once cozy and grand,” says Cindy. In Bouldin, Webber + Studio had a different challenge: A family of four wanted to live on a lot that seemed unbuildable because it was riddled with imposing live-oak roots. A barbell-shaped footprint led the way to a stunning 1,700-square-foot home. “We continue to push the envelope of what a home can do,” says Spencer. “The tour is meant to be inspiring.” aiaaustin.org

After the successful launches of Atelier Swarovski jewelry and accessories, Swarovski has added another beautiful branch to its more than 120-year-old empire with the debut of Atelier Swarovski Home. Dick Clark + Associates custom-designs all of its front doors, including this one, which takes advantage of the Westlake residence’s incredible city view. When the door is closed, the vertical glass insert lines up perfectly so you see the Capitol through the sliver.

Just try to find an Austin neighborhood without his imprint. For 37 years, architect Dick Clark of Dick Clark + Associates has been responsible for some of Austin’s most breathtaking homes and standout commercial projects, shaping the city for the better and establishing the benchmark for contemporary design. Along the way, he has helped groom some of the biggest names on the design scene, including Jamie Chioco and Michael Hsu. The majority of Austin’s hottest restaurants are the work of at least one of these talents. A visionary from day one, Clark—a tried-and-true urbanite—was one of the first to see the potential of downtown, opening his office in what’s now the Warehouse District more than 20 years ago. “When I came here, I had no audience. It was a town; now it’s a city,” recalls Clark, who not only has offices in downtown but helped launch its metamorphosis. He designed one of the area’s first fine-dining restaurants, Reed Clemons’ Mezzaluna, in 1992, shocking the sleepy barbecue and Mexican-joint town with a clean, modern aesthetic. The city’s tendency toward “soft contemporary” homes that blend into and celebrate their surroundings also is

mostly due to Clark. “I’m not trying to do a standalone piece of art,” he says. “My homes are livable.” Along with his usual full roster of residential clients— he has a staff of about 25, some of whom have been with him for more than two decades—Clark is dedicating much of his time to the $250 million redevelopment of The Backyard performance venue in Bee Cave outside of Austin. The 50-acre project, developed by International Development Management and slated for construction to begin next year, will include a completely renovated outdoor venue; a boutique hotel called The Nelson (after Willie); a multifaceted restaurant, Bloom; office space; and condos. “It’s my biggest project,” says Clark, who is designing The Nelson and Bloom. “It will be my biggest project,” says Clark. “It will be a destination resort for Austinites.” Although Clark, who attended UT and Harvard and lived in many cities before settling in Austin, travels constantly for site visits around the country, he has no plans to leave. “The core people are the same—they’re the reason I stay here—and the spirit of Austin is the same. It’s changed for the better, actually.”

The prelude to the Texas Book Festival (November 5 and 6), 2016’s First Edition Literary Gala will feature actor-authors Ethan Hawke and Diane Guerrero; acclaimed journalist and novelist Carl Hiaasen; and chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson. Every 15 seconds, a hotel opens in Austin. We exaggerate, but not by much. Austin added about 2,000 hotel rooms in 2015 alone, with each hotel trying to out-cool the others, packing so many locals into their restaurants and bars that we have to wonder if anybody ever eats or drinks at home anymore. At the new Hotel Van Zandt on Rainey Street, lovers of live music cram into Geraldine’s on a nightly basis. Nearby, the 1,000-plus

room JW Marriott has made itself at home; its patio bar along Congress is always mobbed with people who seem to be on permanent vacation. Across the river, we’re hard-pressed to find a seat at South Congress Hotel’s expansive bar on First Thursday, and its Café No Sé and Central Standard are already an essential part of the dining scene, not to mention the 12 highly coveted stools in the new Otoko (complete with its own

private bar). And, of course, there will soon be more places to check out (and check into). The brand new Archer Hotel Austin is sure to be a staycation favorite at the hot Domain Northside, with its second location of chef David Bull’s Second Bar + Kitchen. Next year comes the biggest, baddest Fairmont you ever did see: With 37 floors, it will be the second tallest building in Austin. It will also have six restaurants that

will—count on it —fill immediately. You’d think this inn inundation would bring rates down, but don’t be silly. The average downtown rate on a dull day hovers around $250, but how many dull days does Austin have? With all the festivals, car races, runs, bike-a-thons, and conventions, those rooms sometimes levitate to $800 or so. Happily, we locals already have rooms. Now, if we can just find a barstool.
