THE ETHEREAL LENS OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER KATE LESUEUR ELEVATES EVERYTHING SHE SHOOTS. By CoURTnEy HoLLiS

Fashion and lifestyle photographer Kate LeSueur captures Austin style through dreamy images that evoke an effortless grace. The city’s casual environment suits LeSueur’s temperament. “I like things to feel very natural and real,” she says. “Austin is very approachable; there’s no pressure to feel you must have the latest high-end anything.” A gardener and avid home cook, LeSueur originally made a name for herself as a food photographer, with her work appearing in local publications (including Austin Way) as well as in titles like Bon Appetit and Garden & Gun. She found her calling in fashion last year during a test shoot with Austinbased fashion designer Gail Chovan. The dynamic nature of the shoot challenged LeSueur in a way that she found irresistible. “I was sort of reserved because my style is not very high-key,” recalls LeSueur, a Louisiana native. “I don’t shoot with lights, which is not typical for fashion photography, so there was some intimidation.” Since entering Austin’s fashion scene, LeSueur has partnered with local high-end retailers like Kick Pleat and Esby Apparel for their look books and websites. Her preferred backdrops are lush and organic, from an old home with unkempt greenery to mid-century architecture in the heart of the city. “Austin has a special Spartan, minimal quality to it, and people just come as they are.” katelesueur.com

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

Nothing inspires me more than spending time with those who truly love their jobs. As the relentless Austin heat takes a toll on our energy levels, our passions are what keep us going--as well as a well-timed vacation or two--through these final weeks of summer. I was lucky to spend time with some of the hard-working, dedicated women at C3 Presents, producer of the Austin City Limits Music Festival. I’ve attended the fest every year since it began (I still have my oversize souvenir tickets from 2003), so it was exciting to talk to senior producer Amy Corbin, festival director Lindsey Sokol, and Courtney Trucksess, director of sponsorship and marketing, about their impressive roles and all the big changes at Zilker Park this year, among the biggest in the ACL’s 15-year history. As I drove away from the photo shoot at Corbin’s stunning home by C3’s Cambria Harkey (one of Austin’s most beautiful and talented souls, Harkey has photographed every festival), I thought about how passionate they were about what they do, and felt lucky, once again, to have landed

my own dream job. This issue marks two years of Austin Way, and I’m immensely proud of what our team has accomplished. Not only is September our anniversary month, but it also marks the beginning of my favorite time of year: Fall festival season. In addition to ACL, this month brings the Texas Tribune Festival and its full slate of political and issue-based programming; I’m especially looking forward to the inaugural TribFeast with The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd. We’re also gearing up for Fantastic Fest, the largest genre film fest of its kind in the country-and, as the Alamo Drafthouse’s Tim League tells us on page 42, the most kick-ass of them all. We should all have as much as fun at our jobs and be as dedicated as League and the C3 team. Austin is a much better place because of that passion.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

As Austin Way becomes more of a part of this city, I become more aware of how Austin is viewed outside of Texas. People I know around the country often tell me how much they love Austin, even if they have never been here. But I wonder whether people around the country really appreciate how unique this city is and what the entrepreneurial energy is really like here. This is a town of true entrepreneurs. They are the visionaries and trend forecasters. There is no place where the entrepreneurial spirit is more alive than in Austin, and it goes well beyond the dominant players like Whole Foods Market and Dell Inc. Consider Vicki Roberts and her glamorous new dealership, Lexus of Lakeway. It is spectacular and we can only hope a vision of what luxury car dealerships will look like in the future. Restaurateurs Stuart Thomajan and C.K. Chin have set the bar for downtown dining with Swift’s Attic and Wu Chow, and will open a third eatery at the new Lamar Central development. There is Jose Buitron and Bill Pitts, who are

about to open their third Jose Luis Salon, this one at Domain Northside. They have recognized opportunities in these up-and-coming areas of Austin, and Domain Northside—the new entertainment and shopping district by Endeavor Real Estate Group—is certainly positioned to be the trendiest place in town. Visionary entrepreneurs, however, can take many forms. Dr. Bruce Levy is a definite visionary with his introduction of HyGleaCare, making colonoscopy prep easier. In addition, Marlene Jorge is a visionary with her trend-setting murals around Austin. And let’s not forget Ted Oakley, founder of Oxbow Advisors, who is a definite trend-setter not only in capital management but with his vision for his charity, Foster Angels, which he created in 1999. For them, it’s good business. For us, it all contributes to the energy and quality of life that make Austin so special.

For its 15th anniversary, expect some big changes at the Austin City Limits Music Festival— a markedly different layout, more shade, and new surprises throughout Zilker Park, which will see more than 75,000 people each day over two weekends this fall. To find out more about what to expect, Austin Way caught up with three top women at Austinbased C3 Presents—which also produces Lollapalooza and other big events—who know how to get things done. BEHIND THE LINEUP: AMY CORBIN

Role: C3’s senior promoter, Corbin oversees the concert division and books all the talent for ACL, a rollercoaster of a job—and one that she’s done since the fest’s beginning. “It was a nail-biter to the end,” she says of this year’s lineup, with headliners like Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, and LCD Soundsystem, but the record sellouts of both weekends validated those sleepless nights. This Year’s Highlights: Corbin says the diverse lineup has something for everyone, and she predicts a memorable closing set from Mumford & Sons both Sundays. VII debuts its take on the New York Sour: bourbon, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, red wine, and, for garnish, a black sour orange wheel—a Seville orange, cut into wheels then dehydrated. “We wanted to incorporate something that spoke of the chefs without deviating too far from the classic [lemon garnish],” says Jason Huerta.

With a career spanning nearly 70 years and counting, world traveler, filmmaker, and photojournalist Elliott Erwitt has no shortage of celebrated work. Now through January 1, the Harry Ransom Center, which acquired Erwitt’s photography collection in 2015, will present the most comprehensive exhibit of his life and career with “Elliott Erwitt: Home Around the World.” “His signature style is that he can do anything,” remarks exhibit curator Jessica McDonald, who for the past three years has dedicated herself to studying the 47,500-piece collection of silver gelatin prints. Among those included in the exhibit are celebrated works as well as rare photographs, all of which feel timeless regardless of when taken. Born in Paris to JewishRussian parents in 1928, Erwitt and his family moved to Milan and immigrated to the US at the onset of World War II, first in New York and then Los Angeles. His experience with displacement and alienation translates into an ability to deliver a sense of connectivity, regardless of place. Traveling the world on his own for most of his life, Erwitt developed an affinity for other lone figures. He finds connections with dogs and children; museums are also subjects he returns to

often throughout his work. His diverse portfolio shows the two sides of Erwitt: One as a professional photographer who travels with political figures and goes behind the scenes with celebrities, the other as someone who enjoys photographing family and friends. This exhibition aims to merge these two worlds and to question whether those categories are really separate. “One thing that hasn’t really been done before is tracing a lot of these photographs back to their original contexts,” McDonald says. Often Erwitt used outtakes from family photo shoots for advertisements, while his photojournalism assignments ended up in his own books. “That’s one of the messages we want to communicate—that his whole life has been invested in this,” the curator adds. Accompanying the exhibit is the Harry Ransom Center and Aperture’s partnered release of an unprecedented catalog that includes four extensive essays on Erwitt. “This is really the first publication like this,” says McDonald, explaining that catalogs featuring Erwitt’s work have yet to include writings by scholars as a subject of study. 300 W. 21st St., 512-471-8944; hrc.utexas.edu

Into the Woods EddiE V’s foundErs arE back with Red Ash, fEaturing craft italian farE—and what might just bE austin’s must-try dish for fall.

The influx of Italian restaurants that started last year continues with Red Ash, a new craft Italian concept from Eddie V’s founding fathers—Larry Foles, Guy Villavaso, and John Carver— in a 3,800-square-foot space on the ground floor at the Colorado Tower. The menu, cocktail program, and wine list were developed by multitalented executive chef Carver, who sharpened his Italian chops at Cipriani in New York City before taking the reins at Eddie V’s. “We’re doing big, bold Italian food with honest flavors, the kind that I like to spend time cooking and eating,” Carver says. Case in point: succulent

wood-roasted bone marrow and wild mushroom risotto, a seasonal masterpiece of marrow bones and creamy, dreamy veal-stock risotto with wood-grilled mushrooms finished with veal jus (fun fact: The wood-burning oven in which the bones roast is so hot that it creates red ash ember, lending the restaurant its moniker). “This is a decadent dish but still light,” Carver says. As the weather gets cooler, expect dishes like a traditional take on cacio e pepe and papparadelle with wild boar bolognese. Broadway in Austin: You’ll have to wait at least another season for the touring company of Hamilton to hit Austin, but plenty of appealing shows are coming, starting with Newsies and Live from Broadway: The Illusionists. December’s offering, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, was written for television; many Boomers grew up on the camp-classic 1965 version with Lesley Ann Warren. Different kinds of nostalgia are on offer in January with Mamma Mia! in its farewell tour, and in March with the first touring production of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. These days, vodka is increasingly what’s in cocktail-hour glasses. For a while, a revived interest in whiskey and other brown spirits had nudged the clear elixir out of the spotlight, but now a growing number of unusual and luxe vodkas are fueling a renewed surge. “Vodka’s heritage and flavor nuances deserve a measure of reverence,” says Tony AbouGanim, an award-winning mixologist and the author of Vodka Distilled. As smooth and versatile as ever, the newest crop of vodkas also comes with a twist—stories to tell. Hangar 1’s limited-edition Fog Point Vodka (USA; $125), for example, is a grape-based vodka, distilled from wine (specifically, Bonny Doon’s 2012 Le Cigar Blanc), and then cut with water collected from San Francisco’s world-famous fog—a love letter to the distiller’s NorCal home. Across the Pacific, Soyombo Super Premium Mongolian Vodka (Mongolia; $30) is a bottled history lesson: The wheat-based spirit is distilled on the site of the last Mongolian emperor’s palace and filtered through such precious materials as quartz, silver, and diamonds. Finally, Double Cross Vodka (Slovakia; $37) comes packaged in a sleek, sculptural bottle made from high-end French crystal and laser-cut with select lines of Slovakian poetry. Regardless of which you choose, drink it with respect: “Take your time,” counsels Abou-Ganim. “Vodka should be sipped and savored rather than shot back in a flash.” Cheers to that!

Austin handbag designer Kelly Wynne will never forget an offhand comment made to her during a trip to New York early in her career when she arrived at a meeting decked out in a white peplum top and bright yellow jeans. “You must be from Texas,” a potential supplier said. It was a playful observation, but one that gave her confidence in her choices. “Texas and Austin have pushed me to think outside the box with my personal style as well as with handbags,” Wynne says. “It’s encouraged me to dare to come out with bold prints.” From her watermelon crocodile wristlets to fringed python satchels, Wynne— whose handbags are available at more than 50 retailers across the country as well as online—is clearing a path for herself among designers by being loud and proud in her choice of colors and fabrics. The path has led to her first brick-andmortar store, which will open at the Domain Northside at the end of September. Frustrated with a career in public relations, Wynne, a longtime handbag collector, decided four years ago to turn her side passion into

something larger. She spent lunch breaks visiting fabric suppliers and leather shops to ask questions. “I love looking back at my journey to see how each person led me to the next person,” Wynne recalls from her downtown Austin headquarters. “I put myself in a very vulnerable place because I had no idea if people would like my designs.” Her flagship store at Domain Northside will give Wynne the chance to create a complete experience for her fans as well as newcomers to the line. Her goal is to “create a celebratory and social atmosphere,” which will certainly get a boost from a champagne lounge. Instead of a traditional cash wrap, sales associates will check customers out from anywhere in the store. For her grand opening weekend starting September 30, anyone who purchases a bag will have the chance to win a $1,000 gift card. Wynne will also debut her “Dear 512” collection, inspired by Austin’s unique vibe and featuring five new styles, each with solid leather and classic, neutral colors for day-to-day wear. While the colors might be toned down, the design aesthetic is 100 percent Wynne. Says the designer, “They still have that Kelly Wynne twist. Since moving from New York to Austin almost five years ago, Allison Walton, a Ford model for 24 years, has found the commuter life to be more than worth it. “Austin gives you the space to do things you haven’t had the chance to do in life yet,” Walton says. Sproles, Material not only allows users to launch an online store in minutes, it offers crucial support from industry veterans. Brand manager Lauren Hill says Material is all about simplicity. “A lot of platforms are so clunky and outdated and really complicated,” she says.

Everyone who starts a site gets access to Material’s e-book, Fashioning Your Retail Empire Online, which offers tips from successful fashion retailers and designers. Austin’s Brad Otts, who helped start TOMS shoes, penned a chapter about the challenges of building a

brand identity, while local artist and textile designer Alyson Fox focuses on website design. Material’s assets are winning over users like Austin’s Amy Young, whose site, Thirds, will feature handmade ceramics and textiles. Material shares Young’s “belief in creating

accessibility and quality from the ground up,” she says. Adds another user, Andrea Genevieve of Hello Sunday, which offers pajama separates for children: “I like that they take an interest in me as a person and as a business. They care as much about my success as I do.”

Imagine going to work, fitting in a yoga class, and then grabbing a cocktail with a friend—all with a minimal costume change. That’s the idea behind Being Apparel, an elevated new athleisure line by Scottish designer Shonagh Speirs, who moved to Austin last September. “I wanted to be able to wear my activewear all day and layer up, so I didn’t have to

carry around hundreds of bags of clothing to change,” says Speirs, who has been in the industry for over 10 years, working for such fashion houses as Roland Mouret (a Kate Middleton favorite) and Preen. Behind the Austin-based label—available online and, this fall, at local retailers Hoiden Supply Co. and Dylan Wylde—is the idea of an “everyday

uniform,” or simplified three-layer style: highwaisted leggings and strappy bra tops, jersey dresses and culottes, plus collarless coats and trousers—in other words, pieces that busy modern women can sport to work, Pilates, and social outings alike. “A lot of the [athleisure] brands out there are fairly sports-inspired,” she says, “and I wanted to offer

a more polished aesthetic.” And Speirs could not have found a better new home in Austin. “It’s a very healthy and well-beingconscious city,” says Speirs. “You just need to go down to [Lady Bird] Lake any hour of the day, and people are jogging, doing yoga, cycling. As scenes from A mArriAge go, it’s hard to top the opening moments of Billions for sheer eye-popping intensity. We don’t know it at first, but the man bound and gagged on the floor in the Showtime series premiere is actually wedded to the leather-bound dominatrix snuffing out a cigarette on his chest. The relationship only heats up from there. Paul Giamatti, 49, plays the guy with the burn hole, who also happens to be United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades. His wife, Wendy, portrayed in thigh-high footwear by Maggie Siff, 42, is more than just his partner in blowing off steam. She’s the in-house shrink and performance coach at Axe Capital, a massive hedge fund that pays her eight times more than her husband makes. Needless to say, Chuck cannot wait to expose Axe and its rakish billionaire CEO, played by Damian Lewis, as corrupt. What a relief that both Giamatti (Sideways, Downton Abbey) and Siff (Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men) are vastly more likeable in person than their deliciously despicable characters. The actors recently sat down with Austin Way to talk about the show and the juicy themes it evokes: money, power, sex, greed, and, these days, how to dominate the not-so-small screen in Hollywood. Billions is being acclaimed as one of the best new shows on television, but Chuck and Wendy aren’t exactly easy to take. How do you explain their attraction? Paul Giamatti: They’re two incredibly smart people who are almost too well matched in some weird way. They both love power, they play off each other’s intensity, and they both hunger for success. We’ve dropped into their relationship near the end of something rather than the beginning, though I do think it was loving at one point. It’s a portrait of people hitting a bad spot in a marriage. How they’re going to work it out, I don’t know. But it is certainly a helluva lot of fun to play. Maggie Siff: They’re tough on each other but they’re also very honest. They can be their full selves in a way that’s completely uncensored and unguarded. People like to comment on the sexual element of their relationship as something very dark. But I see it as a testament to their connection. Somewhere along the line, it came up in conversation and they allowed it into the marriage. Behind the scenes, we talk about it being something that Chuck needs in his life, and that Wendy is like, Okay, I can do that. Don’t knock open, honest communication, right? In last season’s finale, Chuck breaks into Wendy’s computer, visits another dominatrix behind her back, and accuses Wendy of being an immoral criminal. Where are things when Billions returns in January? Siff: Season two picks up soon after we left off and you see them regrouping. Wendy’s not at Axe Capital anymore, which makes things complicated for her and Chuck personally and professionally. They’re trying to figure out what to do with themselves. It’s interesting playing a character this conflicted. Something I struggle with occasionally is wanting my characters to be maybe more heroic than they are. I don’t know if every actor struggles with that. I love Wendy and love that she’s so interested in helping people thrive and succeed. My question is always, why not help different kinds of people beyond the hedge fund guys? Can she examine her conscience and ask, “Why only help the super-rich?” Money is practically its own character on Billions—the $60 million beach house, the live-in chefs, the private helicopters. How has inhabiting this world altered your view of the 0.0001 percent? Giamatti: It freaks me out. I’m not going to condemn it, but I do find this level of extreme wealth to be strange and alienating. I’ve got no problem with living well, but you get to a place where enough is enough. In certain circles, though, more is more is more and it never ends. Money makes your

situation better, I’ll tell you that. But I personally don’t tend to spend much of it. I think that’s made my life a lot easier. I’m lucky as hell that I make a decent living, but I think I’m even luckier that I don’t have a taste for speedboats and tailored suits and mansions in the Hamptons. Siff: My feelings haven’t changed at all. I still think it’s bizarre and maybe even a little unhealthy to be rich enough to be a nation-state of your own. At least tell us you enjoyed driving Wendy’s Christmas bonus—the Maserati GranTurismo Sport Coupe, which retails for around $132,000. Siff: To be honest, it’s like getting on a thoroughbred for the first time. You’re like, Whoa! What is this? I only got to drive in a parking lot, unfortunately. And here’s the scary thing: Not only are you driving an extraordinarily expensive car, but they also strap on the most expensive camera equipment to the windshield and you’re barely able to see the road. What I’m saying is, it wasn’t the most romantic driving experience. Paul, you won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing John Adams in the 2008 TV miniseries of the same name. Which is the most cutthroat—Washington, Wall Street, or Hollywood? Giamatti: All three worlds have colorful characters and a high degree of ambition, backstabbing, and all that. I think the political and financial people tend to play things a little more low-key and hidden. That’s not to say you don’t have maverick characters who come up, like the guy who’s running for president. But Hollywood, I think, is the most out-there when it comes to flaunting success and spreading gossip and who’s got the biggest, you know, office. What’s your take on awards season? Giamatti: As an experience, awards ceremonies are truly exciting but also complete mayhem. I’m always amazed people don’t have epileptic seizures with the camera lights flashing in their eyes. If Billions wins an award now or in the future, that would be great, but honestly, the awards and the job we do are completely separate. You never, ever enter a scene thinking, Oh, this is my Emmy moment. You think, This is a great story, these are phenomenal actors I’m working with, and it’s just fantastic to be making a living in this profession. You get an award and you’re like, Wow, this is an amazing unexpected bonus. We’ve talked about success, but what are the worst jobs you’ve ever had? Siff: For about a month in my 20s, I worked at a hedge fund for real. A friend of mine was dating a guy who was a banker, and he gave me a temp job. I had no clue what I was doing. I would sit in front of these Bloomberg computer terminals and bullshit my way through the day so hard it was scary. And while there’s a high degree of glamour in the world of hedge funds we depict on the show, this was pretty basic: a lot less swag and a lot more khakis and plaid. Giamatti: I’ve done so much weird stuff as an actor. I once had to do an entire movie [the 2006 indie film The Hawk Is Dying] with a hawk strapped to my arm. I remember driving in the enclosed cab of a truck down a highway in Florida with the bird screaming out and its claws going after my face. That was way more dangerous than bringing down billionaires. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Siff: I take it easy. My husband and I live in New York, where I grew up, and we have a 2-year-old. I was pretty tired after the season and wanted to catch the last of my daughter’s babyhood. It’s going really, really fast. As far as guilty pleasures, I’m pretty nerdy. A night alone, I like to eat ice cream and watch BBC’s Call the Midwife. Giamatti: I’m embarrassed to admit that I never watch television. I know I’m missing out. But I love to read and see theater. I took my son to Hamilton, which was incredible, of course, and we got to meet the cast, who were weirdly excited to say hello because they wanted to meet another founding father. Okay, finally, what really happens during a sex scene? Siff: In general on the show, we do everything we can to lighten things up. Paul and I call each other Buck and Cindy, and our version of Cindy is spelled X-I-N-D-E-E. Damian loves singing show tunes around the set. When the cameras roll on the sex stuff, it’s all a total illusion. I’m standing there in six-inch stilettos attempting to look hot but desperately trying not to fall on my ass. Giamatti: For me, it’s interesting. Being tied up made me really relaxed to the point where I kept falling asleep. At one point, Maggie had to use a low-voltage prod on me, which nobody knew how to operate. I’m falling asleep and she’s tickling me with the thing by really pressing it into me. But then she kinda runs it lightly from my navel up to my chest and it shocks the living hell out of me. After that, I was wide awake. She didn’t try it again.

It started wIth just a basIc need—Carmen Tal, today the cofounder of Moroccanoil, was visiting relatives in Israel when a bad color process damaged her hair. Disappointed, she accompanied a friend to a salon in Tel Aviv, where a hairstylist used an oil treatment to both condition and style Tal’s hair. According to Tal, “The results were like, Wow!” Tal, a former salon owner herself who had also worked in the fashion industry, brought the product back home to Canada, where she started using it in her personal beauty regimen. She shared it with friends, colleagues, and her hairstylist. And as each reported the same impressive results—nourished, beautiful hair—she became convinced she had to distribute this oil on a larger stage. It took Tal six months to persuade her then husband, Ofer, a business executive who spoke Hebrew, that they needed to make this treatment oil their next venture. Initially, the couple started by just securing North American distribution rights, but when their success outpaced the company’s level of production, Tal bought the company outright and launched what is today the multimillion-dollar brand Moroccanoil.

Looking back, Tal admits it was no cake walk. “What we faced most was the negativity of people,” she says of those early days. “The thing for me was mostly people saying, ‘Don’t bring something with oil.’ ‘Don’t bring anything with glass because it’s going to break, it’s going to make a mess.’ Or, ‘Why do you do something with hair—that’s [a] saturated [category]?’ That was the challenge. We just said, ‘Okay, if we fail, we fail.’ You don’t always have a guarantee that things are going to be successful. But we were lucky.” “Lucky” might be the understatement of the century. The gamechanging success of Moroccanoil in an industry notorious for fickleness and fads could well be attributed to some luck, but the stunning growth and longevity of the brand is directly proportional to Tal’s tenacity, dedication, inspiration, and vision. Since the company launched less than a decade ago, Moroccanoil has ignited a passion (some would say obsession) in North America for argan oil, a rich elixir that’s harvested from kernels inside the fruit of Moroccan argan trees. In a labor-intensive process, Berber women crack open the argan nut to obtain the kernels, which are ground to extract the pure, unfiltered oil, which is then left to settle so any impurities sink to the bottom and can be removed. The resulting oil can be used for food (much the same way olive oil is) as well as a moisturizer for the face and hair. Argan oil is one of the main efficacious ingredients in the company’s cornerstone Moroccanoil Treatment and the signature ingredient across the entire product line, and spawned shelves of me-too merchandise. According to industry researcher Mintel, 29 products using argan oil launched in 2008; in 2012, it was 588. Meanwhile, researcher NPD Group has seen US department store sales of products featuring argan oil increase by more than 200 percent. “It actually doesn’t bother me anymore,” says Tal of the flood of argan oil products that fill shelves everywhere from high-end department stores to the local drugstore—even big-box stores like Costco. “Now I’m so confident that being the first, being the pioneer, and continuing to bring products of the highest quality, nobody will ever take that place. No matter how many other products come out, we’re still going to be


“I’m so confident that being the first, being the pioneer, and continuing to bring products of the highest quality, nobody will ever take that place.” white, black, red—there wasn’t much diversity in the marketplace.” Since then, the company has grown exponentially, both in size and in scope, and is now available in over 65 countries and has also experienced tremendous growth in the travel retail/ duty-free category around the world. Tal relocated to New York (Moroccanoil also maintains offices in Montreal, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo), and they have expanded their offerings, from just the treatment oil—which found fans in celebrities such as Madonna, Emily Blunt, and Bar Refaeli—to a range of hair products, including a new texture collection featuring a Dry Texture Spray, made with a special blend of volcanic mineral zeolite and high-performance resins, as well as the unisex styler Texture Clay, which blends argan oil with cosmetic-grade bentonite clay and nourishing shea butter for a silky texture with shapeable hold. A surprising addition to the hair collection, Tal introduced spa-quality Moroccanoil Body skincare treatments, including an exfoliating body scrub—which features a unique blend of argan, sesame, grape seed, avocado, and sweet almond oils to nourish the skin—cleansing bar, shower milk, body butter, body soufflé, and hand cream. Says Tal, “The development of the Moroccanoil Body collection was a natural next step for us, as

we wanted to satisfy our consumer’s desire for luxurious treatments that not only transform the hair, but the body as well.” In 2015, two enticing and exotic fragrances were added: Fleur d’Oranger, a rich orange blossom scent that Tal says “is good enough to eat” and was inspired by her time in Spain; and Fleur de Rose, sparked by a garden of roses Tal spotted during a trip to France. The Moroccanoil Sun collection was launched the same year. “Argan oil is an incredible gift of nature, a natural sun protector, so it was an obvious choice for us to launch a Sun line,” says Tal. “We have always been inspired by the Mediterranean, and our Sun collection reminds me of when I was a teen, and going to the beach with my friends feeling happy and relaxed.” “I find that when I travel is when I have the time to discover, and I have the time to observe and see what else is happening,” she adds. “I’m not a creative person, but I know what I like. And then I interpret it in my own way.” Later this year, the company plans to announce its next generation of yet-to-be-revealed haircare products. “Trends are changing,” says Tal. “We try to come up with one or two big launches every year, or we formulate something—like [when] a new ingredient has come up in the market and we need to adjust—so we constantly are reinventing ourselves.” But most importantly for Tal is her holistic commitment to her customers. As well as inspiring women to look and feel their best, Tal is dedicated to helping them fulfill their personal potential and make their dreams a reality by empowering them to discover beauty in a new light—through the power of inspiration. With this at the forefront of her vision for her brand, and realizing the power of inspiration to move us to action, Moroccanoil announced its

the original. It’s not just about being an argan oilinfused brand; it’s much more than that. I think we are special.” At the time of Moroccanoil’s debut, it wasn’t just what was inside the bottle that was unique. The scent (a distinct and delicious aroma the company calls Fragrance Originale), the eye-catching apothecary-esque glass bottles, the elegantly designed labels—everything about Moroccanoil heralded something entirely new and different from anything available in the marketplace. Still, with only one product—the now iconic Moroccanoil Treatment—Tal needed to rely on grassroots marketing to get it into the right hands. Bottles were given away to hairdressers, stylists, influencers, and editors—anyone who could spread the word about what she believed was the new beauty essential. “It was very different than most of the beauty products of the time,” recalls Tal, noting the signature aqua and orange packaging, the blue culled from an image of an ocean seen in a fashion print ad. “Seven, eight years ago, most of the packages were

Women featured in the series included trailblazers such as Rebecca Welsh, founder of The HALO organization, which helps homeless and at-risk youth heal and create a future through art therapy, and Allyson Ahlstrom, who provides cool clothes to kids in need across the country through her philanthropic Threads for Teens. “We’re extremely proud through Inspired By Women™ to feature powerful stories of passionate and courageous women who take confidence, compassion, and strength to a whole new level,” says Tal. “We hope their incredibly moving stories and accomplishments will serve as the catalyst that inspires all women to let go of their fears, take a chance, and realize their dreams. When you empower women, the sky’s the limit!” Most recently, the Inspired By Women™ program honored Marchesa designer and cofounder Georgina Chapman, who works with the organization The Magic Bus Foundation, a nonprofit that aims to lift communities in India out of poverty by providing education, sanitation, and mentoring efforts. It’s an organization close to Chapman’s heart as generations of her family have lived in India, and much of the artisanal embroidery and craftsmanship for which her designer gowns are known comes from these regions. Says Tal, “As we only just launched

From a two-story house nestled in an East Side cul-de-sac, the 18 employees of full-service digital advertising agency Tilted Chair create everything from online videos to billboards for major clients such as People magazine, Torchy’s Tacos, and Topo Chico. “We found [the house] on Craigslist, and it just felt like home,” partner Erik Hernandez says. Style: Comfortable yet creative. Dogs are more than welcome; traditional office phones are not. Character Building: The home’s previous tenant, a skilled metalworker and designer, gave the home a unique feel, with a handmade wooden staircase and a vintage oven. With more than 200 employees, six-year-old Chaotic Moon, the tech-haven development and design agency with clients like Dell, Disney, and Pizza Hut, fully embraces its tagline: “We’re The Best,” featured front and center in an Austinthemed graffiti wall in the lobby of its downtown two-story offices. “It is a little tongue and cheek, but if you don’t think it then why are you in this space?” says Chad Darbyshire, Chaotic Moon’s EVP of creative marketing and innovation R&D. The Dark Side: Glass offices are named after supervillains such as Maleficent and Darth Vader. Both Worlds: Half the space is designed for desks and chairs, while other rooms are filled with Lego towers, hanging skateboards, and strobe lights—perfect for Nerf gun fights. With 10 full-time employees, the close-knit Guerilla Suit works its magic for clients like ACL Live, the Pearl in San Antonio, and Wendy Davis’s Deeds Not Words campaign. “Our work is colorful and vibrant, so we try to keep our surroundings minimal,” says art director Luigi Maldonado. Style: A clean-cut design and shades of cream give it a blankcanvas feel. Creative Corner: The office kitchenette is filled with the team’s favorite snacks and client products, and bright, neon letters arranged to read as centaur city. Like a missing puzzle piece, the new Hotel Eleven is a perfect fit for its charming East Austin neighborhood while also filling a need in an area that attracts tourists and locals alike. The global gaggle that gathers each fall for Austin’s Formula One US Grand Prix can’t help but scratch its collective head over how everyone refers to the big race at COTA. What on earth, visitors ask, is a COTA? Why, we Austinites explain, it’s Circuit of the Americas, the name of the track. Welcome to Austin, where everything is referred to by acronyms or initials. Conversation around here almost always devolves into alphabet soup. One reason? All the festivals. We’re gearing up for ACL, which sounds like a knee injury but is really the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Then there’s the Austin Film Festival (AFF), TBF (Texas Book Festival), and, next spring, the grandfather that put us on the acronym map: SXSW (South by Southwest). Another reason: We’re in the land of state government, where you can’t go a day without hearing about an RFP (request for proposals) from the HHSC (Health and Human Services Commission). Neighbors bicker about whether or not to support LHDs (Local Historic Districts), RPP (Residential Permit Parking), ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units—better known among English speakers as garage apartments), and TNCs (Transportation Network Companies, namely, Uber and Lyft, which at press time had fled Austin after a battle with the city, leaving us SOL). And we carp about the actions and inactions of COA. What, newcomers must ask, is COA? Ah, yes. City of Austin. Ever hear Houstonians refer to the COH or Dallasites mention COD? You do not. Only in Austin is being avidly acronymonious completely A-OK. Wait, did we say Austin? We mean ATX.
