THE GREAT OUTDOORS RECREATION & ADVENTURE

A perfect destination for outdoor sports and adventure! With our lush valleys, crystal-clear waters and dramatic high peaks, Delaware County offers visitors unlimited locations for outdoor adventure. Whether you’re seeking the challenge of downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing; the tranquility of a leisurely walk through fields and forests or a steep trek; hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, extreme mountain biking, or miles of country roads for the biking enthusiast; the Great Western Catskills provides visitors with places to experience all of the great outdoors during any season! Enjoy the wildlife, fall in love with the breathtaking views. FISHING AND HUNTING

The Great Western Catskills feature some of the finest fishing in the Eastern United States. According to popular lore, fly fishing was born in the Catskills, which still provide some of the best angling spots in the country. Hundreds of miles of world-class fishing streams, rivers and reservoirs are open to the public. Natural area trout streams, which eventually flow to the Delaware River, provide freestone stream fishing. These waters are among the world’s best and include the Beaverkill River, as well as the East and West Branch of the Delaware River. The Town of Hancock is home to the Headwaters of the Delaware River. Fishing access is also available on the Susquehanna River, on the northern border of Delaware County. The Pepacton and Cannonsville Reservoirs are open to fishing with a permit. Bass, pickerel, walleye and pan fish can be found here with trout streams above and below. Being part of the New York City Watershed, the drinking water source for New York City, boats on the reservoirs must be steam cleaned before entering these waters. Dozens of ponds and lakes offer stillwater fishing amid an unspoiled wilderness. Numerous tributaries run throughout the county providing for hundreds of miles of world-class fishing streams. Enjoy hunting turkey and other fowl in the spring and again in the fall. Deer hunting is enjoyed in all three versions — bow and arrow, gun and

black powder. Hunting is permitted throughout the Catskill Forest Preserve, in most state parks under guidance of DEC, and on certain NYC DEP-owned properties. Not familiar with the Great Western Catskills? We have many qualified guide services to assist you in becoming more familiar with our area. Just a reminder that hunting licenses are required in New York State and are widely available at sporting good stores, town clerk offices and through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (www.dec.ny.gov). The DEC maintains a satellite office in Delaware County, in the Town of Stamford (607-652-7367).

A 70-mile stretch of the Delaware River featuring canoeing, fishing, restaurants, arts and entertainment, lodging and more.

RECREATIONAL BOATING

Paddling enthusiasts will find water everywhere in the Great Western Catskills. Our area rivers, streams, day-use areas and reservoirs offer ideal settings for canoeing, kayaking or sail boating. For a faster pace, the Delaware River will give you an exhilarating paddle, and in some places water levels can rise to Class III Rafting standards. The Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs offer paddlers a flat, but

pleasant, paddle with breathtaking views of our mountains. As 90% of the drinking water supply for 9 million people in New York City and portions of the Hudson Valley, these reservoirs have always been a destination for anglers in row boats, but only recently have other non-mechanized craft been allowed to ply their waters. When boating on the Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs, only non-motorized boats are permitted and paddlers need to abide by specific rules and regulations in order to protect the water quality. All vessels must be steamed cleaned and everyone entering the reservoirs must have an access permit; both easy and quick to obtain. Several steam cleaners are in close proximity of both reservoirs. If you are looking for a more leisurely paddle, the East or West Branch of the Delaware River are for you. With short distances between shores, and easy pull offs, these two waterways make for a fullday outing perfect for the whole family. If you don’t have your own watercraft, don’t dismay. There are many canoe and kayak rental businesses to choose from. All we need is…you! For information on permitting or boat tags, visit nyc.gov and search Watershed Recreation.

ARTS •HISTORY• CULTURE •ATTRACTIONS Area attractions unite historic buildings and classic rural life with quirky cultural happenings and establishments that reflect the passions and personalities of their proprietors. Come to the Great Western Catskills to experience a classical concert in a barn; explore old cemeteries and historic school houses; or indulge in jazz in a historic church along a dirt road. The list goes on with Civil War reenactments, vintage baseball games, arts workshops and programs, book readings with local authors, staged train robberies and gallery openings. You won’t soon forget these authentically local experiences. If you’re a history buff, start your visit at Woodchuck Lodge, naturalist John Burrough’s home in Roxbury. His love of the Catskill Mountains has been preserved and is open for guided tours from May through October. But don’t stop there. Take a ride on the Delaware and Ulster Railroad. This scenic train ride takes you back to the rail days while traveling along the East Branch of the Delaware to Roxbury, or through the woods and up to Highmount. Looking for historic craftsmanship? Look no further than a workshop or festival at Hanford Mills Museum where the waters of Kortright Creek have been powering the nationally registered historic site since 1846.

ARTS •HISTORY•CULTURE•ATTRACTIONS Tucked away in this legendary land of the Great Western Catskills, you’ll find three covered bridges, each a reminder of old horse and buggy days. These romantic symbols of our past beckon young and old alike. Downsville Covered Bridge is the second oldest and longest covered bridge in New York State, stretching across the East Branch of the Delaware River. Spanning the West Branch of the Delaware River are the Hamden Covered Bridge and Fitches Covered Bridge in Delhi, both single spans, designed longer than needed to allow for widening of the streams. Fortunately, today you can tour these three nearby bridges, by car or by bicycle, and along

the way, there is a lot to do in every season. Start at Fitches Covered Bridge, which is 3.2 miles north of Delhi on State Highway 10; Travel south on State Highway 10, 7.7 miles to the Hamden Covered Bridge, on State Highway 10. For a moderate bike route, stay on State Highway 10 to the Village of Walton. Go east on State Highway 206 to Bear Spring State Park, and continue another 6 miles to find the Downsville Covered Bridge on your right. So spend a few days exploring Mother Nature’s picturesque backyard, and tour the three bridges of Delaware County, in the Great Western Catskills.

You’ll find three covered bridges here, historical reminders of horse and buggy days.

Delaware County provides a fun blend of things to see and do.

A lot of people come to Hancock, NY on weekends to fish, hunt, hike, canoe, sail, snowmobile, ski, balloon, kayak, go antiqueing or just listen to the quiet. Some people do it full time.

They’re called residents. They fish and hunt whenever they want (in season) and don’t have to wade through traffic every Friday and Sunday night. They’re already where they want to be when they get up in the morning. They enjoy small town life, 365 days a year. You can visit Hancock without using a drop of gas. Just direct your browser to www.VisitHancockNY.com. That doesn’t mean we don’t want to see you. By all means, please stop by in person. Bring your whole family. There’s plenty of fun things to do. Fish for giant trout in "America's Fishing Hole", The Delaware River. The headwaters of the Delaware River are at Hancock. Canoe or kayak down the same river

George Washington crossed to win American independence. Ride a hot air balloon over scenery that will take your breath away. Golf on one of two great golf courses, one built by golf icon, Robert Trent Jones. Or just sit and relax and take in the quiet of Hancock. You can also bring your business. We have funding sources, tax advantages, high speed internet, rail, and major highway connections. Come visit. Stay for a weekend. Stay for a week. Stay for a lifetime.
