CLASSROOM ACTIVITY GUIDE This year’s edition of STUFF Made and Built in Eastern Ontario gives an overview of some of the most exciting local developments and career opportunities in construction and manufacturing. To help students learn about the industry and think about potential careers, we’ve assembled discussion questions and a quiz to get students thinking about their future and how they can contribute to the industry.

DISCUSSION Questions 1. In Lyndsey Lyons’s story (p. 49), she originally went to school for architecture, but decided to switch into a carpentry program. How is her apprenticeship as a carpenter similar to the architecture program she was originally enrolled in? How is it different? 2. Luigi Burjato (p. 49) lives in a house with two engineers which certainly influenced his decision to become one himself. How has your family influenced your career aspirations? 3. Other than salary, what factors should you consider when choosing a career? 4. Complete the career planning quiz on pages 40 & 41. Of the jobs recommended for you, which one appeals to you most? Find one company in the magazine that would employ this kind of worker. 5. Why is it important to support local businesses?
The following questions are to be answered using the company profiles featured on pages 57-69. 6. Why is work culture an important consideration when choosing a job? Compare the different work cultures described in the profiles for 3M Canada, Central Precast, Ross Video, Pure Ingenuity, Nylene Canada ULC, and M Con Products. Which one do you think suits you the best and why? 7. Look at the benefits and perks advertised in the profile for Central Precast (p. 59). Which benefits are most important to you, and which ones could you live without? 8. Why is it important to consider benefits in addition to salary when comparing different job opportunities? 9. If you were interested in working with Ross Video, where should you go to get more information about job postings and potentially submit an application? 10. The ‘Career Advancement’ section of the Ross Video profile states that employees are encouraged to explore other career paths while working for their company. Why do you think they would encourage their employees to explore different careers? How can having a diverse skill set help you in the workforce?
