endor Glass & Aluminum is one of Westboro’s oldest businesses, having been established in 1941. While they began as a manufacturer of wooden garage doors, the company soon found its niche in aluminum windows. The next big breakthrough came with their 1955 invention of the Fendock, an aluminum dock and accessory system for cottages that has become the gold standard in Eastern Ontario and beyond. The company’s myriad products now include commercial and residential windows, doors, entranceways, garage doors and more. Current owner Greg Westwell is pleased to have followed in his father’s footsteps, heading the firm, and equally proud that Fendor is still a family business, employing his wife, sister and their sons in addition to many others. Fendor’s success has been built on the quality of its products. “We have worked very hard to be innovative in terms of our product development while consistently maintaining the high manufacturing standards the company has always been known for,” confirms Greg. “We also take enormous pride in offering the best customer service possible. This has helped make us a leader in a very competitive indus-

try and I think it’s one of the reasons we have so much repeat business, particularly among contractors.” Fendor’s low-maintenance, energy-efficient windows are among its most popular products. Available in numerous different styles, their windows are favoured in both contemporary-style homes and commercial buildings as well as by those renovating older homes and seeking to replicate the house’s original character. “We choose to offer a broad range of styles so that customers do not have to sacrifice on appearance to achieve the value and environmental savings offered by new windows.” “Replacement windows add curb appeal, enhanced indoor aesthetics and energy efficiency to any home, with benefits beginning immediately after installation,” he adds. “Because they are usually much easier to operate, they provide superior ventilation as well. Replacement windows offer one of the best returns on investment of any home improvement project, and when installed properly, may never need replacing again.” The company’s Fendock products offer the same value proposition as Fendor’s windows and doors. “Fendock is strong, safe and lightweight docking system is made of top quality structural aluminum. It is en-

vironmentally friendly and maintenance free, with no annual repairs or rebuilding required,” explains Greg. An affordable, high quality product, Fendock is not only attractive, but easy to assemble as well, enabling you to enjoy your summer and boating season more. Fendor’s commitment to conservation and stewardship is integrated into the design of every product. “We educate our customers about the toxicity of using pressure treated lumber which can contain chemicals such as chromium, copper, and arsenic, all of which make pressure treated lumber unsuitable for use as a decking material around waterways.” The company’s community activities are many. In addition to being a regular contributor to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, Fendor has been supplying its Fendock truss-style docks to the Ottawa Dragonboat Festival for over 10 years now, with the lightweight nature and resilient construction of Fendock truss docks making them ideal for the almost 25 000 people who use them during the festival weekend each year. This year, Fendor will be relocating to a nearby location in Nepean, at 46 Auriga Drive. While Fendor is sorry to leave the

neighbourhood it has called home for over seventy years, it has grown substantially and is no longer the ideal location for a manufacturing facility. “It’s extremely difficult for us to get 53-foot trailers down Westboro’s busy residential streets,” says Greg. “When the company was founded, there was a nearby rail line so it was much easier to bring in materials and ship out products. We will certainly miss daily life in this vibrant community but look forward to continuing to serve our many local customers in the area.”

Magpie: a love of jewellery, a passion for style

R

iding on a wave of success after 20 years in business, Ottawa’s Magpie Jewellery has opened a third location at 430 Richmond Rd. in Westboro. A beautifully designed store, streaming with natural light, sky high ceilings and a calming neutral palate of white and light wood accents this store is quickly becoming the go-to spot for all things jewellery in Westboro. This location also boasts a Pandora Shop-in-Shop with all the latest in Pandora charms and jewellery. “We’re really growing into a specialized jewellery store,” explains district manager Walter van der Molen, a certified jeweller, diamond grader and gemologist. “An important part of what we do is to train our staff to be jewellery experts.” When designing and ordering custom work through Magpie, you’ll be benefiting from this expertise, along with excellent customer service and the reduced cost that comes from avoiding a number of ‘middle men’. Soon Magpie plans to have a goldsmith on the premises, in the custom built 2nd floor “Mezzanine”, thus further advancing their ability to offer on-site expertise, repairs and refitting. They believe in the importance of inviting their customers into a welcoming environment where they can have private consultations with qualified on-site jewelers. Along with their high level of service, the jewellery available at Magpie is also evolving. New Bridal lines from Canada, the United States and Denmark are also making their way into their shops. From Toronto, Anouk

Jewellery, a stunning collection of organic, sculptural shapes with watery aquamarines, diamonds, and rough diamonds. Out of Denmark, Georg Jensen Jewellery, with a history that spans more than 100 years, the Georg Jensen brand represents quality craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic design. From the U.S., Megan Thorne, a collection offering an updated twist on classic antique wedding bands and engagement rings, made for the bride who desires a contemporary look while paying homage to the traditional timeless styles that have been with us through the ages. Designed by Magpie’s own, Walter Van der Molen, the Signature Line has the ‘Magpie’ customer in mind. A unique collection of hand-made wedding bands and engagement

rings using Canadian-mined diamonds and recycled gold, this exciting venture stems out of the demand Magpie has been fielding for one-of-a-kind wedding jewellery. “We take pride in selecting only the finest jewellery from designers across Canada and around the world,” Van der Molen says, highlighting the fact that while Magpie has made some additions to its selection is has not strayed from its customer favourites. You can find everything from bracelets, rings, necklaces, earrings, and watches crafted in ceramic, gold, platinum, titanium, pewter, Tungsten and many more materials. There is also a wide selection of jewellery for men - TeNo leather and stainless steel bracelet, a streamlined white gold ring or an elegant set of silver and

black Matsu cufflinks. And you’ll still find an extensive array of the funky, affordable pieces that characterized their first collections from popular Canadian designers like Hillary Druxman and Mimi and Marge. The store also boasts an extensive collection Thomas Sabo charms for bracelets and necklaces, from tiny ballet slippers to engraved hearts to painted palm trees. The Magpie philosophy is simple: everyday, act in ways that are inspiring to each other, their customers and their community. Throughout their growth, they have kept in mind their loyal customers. They believe in the individuality and beauty of adornment, and in meeting the individual needs of every customer.

On the cusp of children’s trends

T

he idea behind Monica Gallivan’s Red Chair Kids boutique was borne out of a love of beautiful children’s things and a frustration at the lack of selection in Ottawa. “I had three kids in four years,” she says, “and I was constantly looking for products that were unique, well-made, and had longevity.” Then one day when she was enduring shoddy service at one of the warehousestyle chain stores, Monica had a revelation. “I had a Eureka moment and thought ‘I could do a better job’,” she explains. At the time, though, she was working as an occupational therapist and believed that the profound hearing loss she suffered from was too big an obstacle to her opening her own boutique. But the desire to open her own store remained, and when she received a cochlear nerve implant at the age of forty, she knew it was time to pursue her dream. When she opened her doors in 2006, Monica was leading the trend in original, quality baby items. “It was a great success because so many other like-minded parents sought out all the products they saw in magazines and in other cities but could never find in Ottawa,” she explains. Monica’s sense of style and commitment to finding the best children’s products means she is often at the forefront of new

trends. She was one of the first stores in Canada, for example, to import the nowpopular Sophie the Giraffe from France. Other products you can find at Red Chair Kids include Canadian-made wooden toys, whimsical paintings from local artists, stylish diaper bags, bedding for cribs and larger beds, colourful night-lights and modern, durable high chairs and strollers. A line of environmentally-friendly organic linens, mattresses and baby toys brings going green to the height of stylishness. Tired new parents will appreciate the sleek, comfortable nursing chair and the variety of cribs that will help send their little ones off to dreamland. Red Chair Kids sets itself apart through its commitment to customer service. Monica often finds herself helping clients with problems with products they bought elsewhere when the other stores refused to help. “It’s amazing to me that more stores do not understand the power of helping someone,” she says. Red Chair Kids has also expanded their services and now offers nursery and design consultations on a more formal basis. Monica talks paint colours, furniture and fabric all day long, and she has begun offering one-time consultations to full decorating services with great success. Although there have been many changes at the store in the past year, the future holds

When she opened her doors in 2006, Monica Gallivan led the way in original, quality baby items — and she continues that trend today with great pride.

new product offerings, expanded hours, and more of the same great service that they have become known for. As a Westboro resident, Monica has the opportunity to connect with neighbours both in store and in the community. “I live very close to the store and when I was walking home down Byron Avenue last week I counted no less than six ‘Red Chair Kids Families’ who waved and stopped to chat and even give a few hugs,” she says. “I walked home the whole way with a smile on my face.”

Hubert Heating combines smart technology with high style in the fireplace industry

A small family business celebrates 90 years of bringing award-winning heating and design into Ottawa homes.

O

n a side street in unassuming Hintonburg, a family business has been delivering the latest advancements in fireplace technology, design and style into Ottawa homes for the last 90 years. In 1922, while people were lining up at movie theatres to see Douglas Fairbanks in the movie Robin Hood and archaeologists were discovering the tomb of King Tut, Henry Hubert opened the doors to Hubert Stove Works with the goal of creating a future for himself and his family. It is unlikely he ever imagined it would become a staple in the community and create the legacy it enjoys today. Trends and fads have come and gone over the past 90 years but the customer first approach that Hubert Heating - or Hubert’s, as their clientele fondly call them - is still the same. And the business is still owned and operated by Henry’s son, Robert Hubert, who has been in the heating industry since his late teens. What makes this successful heating business so interesting is the quiet, modest way it has achieved its longevity. Never relying on flashy signs, advertising campaigns or a highprofile address to boost sales Hubert Heating stays focused on what really matters: great customer service and offering the highest quality product and work possible. “Keeping it small works well for us,” explains Mary Ann Charbonneau, co-owner of Hubert Heating. “We are still a family business and very service oriented. All of our staff is in-house and that is key.”

They may be small, but they are still a leader in the industry. “We were the first in Ottawa’s fireplace industry to provide the one stop shopping experience,” says Charbonneau. “We complete all of the work with in-house staff rather than sub-contracting.” Today, Hubert Heating is the go-to source for Ottawa’s comprehensive fireplace needs. The team can tackle almost any project: retrofits with wood or gas inserts, replacement of older appliances with newer updated fireplaces or stoves, or a complete installation including finishing with products like Solus Decor concrete mantles, tiles, stone and custom cabinetry. According to Charbonneau, the possibilities are endless. Not everyone is in the market for brand new. Many homes today have older units in need of a facelift. “It’s easy to update an existing fireplace with a fresh new look,” says Charbonneau. A brick fireplace can be refaced to a drywall-look finish, painted or tiled to breathe new life into your space. Advancements in technology and style allow homeowners to really hone in what features are most important to them. “As homes become more efficient, fireplaces are as much decorative as they are functional,” says Charbonneau. “While some look for a spectacular flame like Town & Country Fireplaces offer, others are looking for the ability to zone heat with efficiency, with products such as Jotul, Valor & Mendota.” She adds that clean and contemporary is the hot trend in fireplace design right now.

Hubert Heating carries models with traditional function and innovative twists like the Renaissance Rumford wood-burning fireplace with guillotine doors. The Rumford has won an EPA “Clean Air Excellence Award” among many others. If beauty and style are high priority, the Clean Face gas fireplaces from Town and Country are a great option, available exclusively at Hubert Heating. Town and Country Luxury Fireplaces have a first-rate reputation, receiving awards from Canada’s largest design show the IIDEX/NeoCon Show, and recognition from the Hearth and Homes VESTA awards. Also exclusive to Hubert Heating, The Stuv line offers unique models like its linear wood-burning fireplace with optional oxidized metal claddings and facing, and sleek cylindrical wood stoves with 360-degree turntable bases and three rotating doors. Choosing the right unit is important. Sizing, purpose, functionality - along with style - is key. In the urban areas gas is most popular, due largely to its ease and convenience. But as electricity and oil prices continue to rise, wood-burning units still have their place and remain very popular in rural communities. If you are preparing for a major home renovation or a new home build and have a unique vision in mind for your new fireplace, there is virtually no limit to what can be accomplished. Charbonneau brings over 30 years of creative expertise and knowledge to the table. With the help of in-house cabinet makers

and fabricators, Charbonneau can help you find or create a perfect custom piece that sets the tone for your entire home. Hubert Heating is proudly Canadian and actively supports other Canadian suppliers and product providers through exclusive partnerships. The relationship with fellow Canadian-owned Town and Country Luxury Fireplaces and Miles Industries, manufacturer of Valor product for North America, are also great examples of the customer first approach that Hubert Heating is known for. Hubert Heating has proven that small, hardworking companies can achieve great things with the right vision. A house becomes a home with the right details - and the right fireplace can become the soul of your home. Not a bad line of business to be in.

A fashionable landmark Muriel Domret’s goal is to create beautiful, wearable clothes in natural fibers with special attention to fit, femininity and timelessness.

W

hen Muriel Dombret arrived in Ottawa from the fashion-forward city of Antwerp, Belgium in 1991, she decided it was time to seriously pursue her passion for fashion. A love of creating clothing was in her blood. She had learned to sew at the knee of her grandmother, a talented and meticulous seamstress. “She was very particular and it used to frustrate me,” says Muriel, who grew up playing with her grandmother’s sewing machine foot pedal, “but now I see what a valuable habit it was to learn. You only need to look at one of Muriel’s designs to see what a difference attention to detail makes. Her goal was to make beautiful, wearable clothes in natural fibers with special attention to fit, femininity, elegance and timelessness. She first started by selling her creations at craft shows and then moved on to open her own studio and boutique a few years later on Wellington Street West. This year, she is happy to announce she is celebrating her twentieth year in business. To honour this anniversary, Muriel is releasing vintage pieces; favorite pieces from past collections in new and exciting fabrics. A revamped website www.murieldombret. com now keeps you up to date with the new arrivals. This rise to success was borne out of years of commitment and dedication in front of her sewing machine. When she first decided to pursue clothing design as a career, she took courses in pattern design and honed her craft.

“I went with my own feeling of how clothing should both look and make you feel,” she says, “and the style just evolved from there.” For over two decades, Ottawa women have loved CLOTHES [by Muriel Dombret] for the classic feminine designs, the quality and beauty of the fabrics and the outstanding customer service. The label stands for contemporary chic and boasts classics that will stand the test of time: charming, modern apparel with a sophisticated flair. For example, the Mandy jacket and Piano skirt, available in a lovely silk jacquard, are reminiscent of styles found on the hit show Mad Men. CLOTHES [by Muriel Dombret] is produced in-house at 1258 Wellington St West. Attentive staff are always available to guide clients through the unique concept of choosing the right outfit, in the right fabrics and colours and the option to custom fit for a nominal charge. This is usually done in under two weeks. A good deal of these fabrics are sustainably manufactured in Italy, organic fabrics being used whenever available. “A big part of our business is working with our customers to find a look and fit that suits them and makes them feel both stylish and comfortable,” she says. To complement Muriel’s designs, the boutique carries a hand-picked selection of Canadian accessory designers such as Montreal jewelry designer, Anne-Marie Chagnon. Her creative pieces add elegance and playfulness to any outfit. Crafted from magnetic pewter, gleaming glass, luminous resin, shining gold, each piece is a unique work of art.

Muriel also features Henning Designs, a collection of fine jewelry designed for the discerning and confident woman. Exquisitely handcrafted in Canada, using only the finest stones and components, brought to them by their world-traveling design team, Henning Designs is a lovely collection with something for every taste. Muriel carries the best selection of exquisite scarves in town and for shoes, look no further than the elegant but original footwear by Audley Shoes. They offer beautifully crafted, classic footwear, from flats to wedges, with unique details. Each season, Audley Shoes update their styles and evolve the shoe collection with an eye to wearability. Each look can be accessorized by a chic, original leather handbag or tote from m0581, available in-store. Traditional concepts and modern construction make these architectural bags eye-catching in their elegance. They come in basic shades and occasionally with an accent of lively colour – for days when you’re feeling whimsical. These refined, functional bags and totes add playful sophistication to any outfit. Also from m0581 are well designed and functional outwear (they are based in chilly Montreal) and beautiful accessories like wallets and pouches. The selection of purses and belts from Fullum and Holt are hard to resist. Another Montreal company, Fullum and Holt produce high quality accessories of innovative and classic design. For knitwear, she carries the luxurious line Ça va de soi. This company meticulously

chooses the highest quality yarn with distinct qualities for designs that fulfill a purpose – warmth, relaxation or freshness. Ça va de soi uses cotton at its finest, transforming it into beautiful wardrobe essentials, like sweaters, cardigans and tees that are always current, never trendy. CLOTHES [by Muriel Dombret] was one of the first clothing stores in the area — a leader in the Wellington West neighbourhood. Looking at the area now, one can really see how the shopping district has grown and evolved into a real shopping destination. Clothes [by Muriel Dombret] has led the way in this transition and has become a shopping landmark, thanks in part to Muriel Dombret’s vision and her talented and meticulous grandmother.

Herb & Spice Shop Ottawa’s Fresh Food Store

Store Manager, Guy Price, takes pride in offering the freshest locally grown produce to his customers

T

he Herb & Spice on Wellington Street West, now in its 40th year, provides some of the region’s most delicious local provisions, specializing in fresh fruits and vegetables. Founded in 1973 by Mike Steinberg and Jeff Sugarman, the original Herb & Spice on Somerset Street West was Ottawa’s first bulk natural food store. “From that location, the store grew to include fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, fresh baked goods and a large grocery selection,” says Mike. Since 1986, the Wellington Street location has been operated by Mike, Bonnie and ma’ayan Steinberg, whose hard work and hands-on approach have helped en-

sure the store’s continuing growth and success. “Choosing to be a fresh food market has been very good for us,” says Mike. “People have learned to enjoy shopping in the European style, to buy things as they need them. Our reputation for quality and freshness brings people from across the city, but most of our business comes from the local neighbourhood.” Located in the heart of Epicurean Row, between Huron and Gilchrist, the Herb & Spice is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. “Wellington West is now one of the city’s most dynamic retail areas,” he notes. “Having so many food shops concentrat-

ed in one neighbourhood is a wonderful thing. While strolling along Wellington Street West, you can socialize with friends and neighbours while popping in to various shops to purchase all the food your family needs.”

A passion for art

The gallery bears Michael Gennis’ name because it speaks to his vision as well as his personal enthusiasm for art. (Left to right) Cheryl Miller, frame consultant, Daniela Celi, optician, Alex Grieb, owner/optician.

S

tep through the doorway of the Michael Gennis Gallery in Westboro and you’ll be astonished at what you see. Showcasing the works of some of Canada’s most exciting and distinctive artists, along with their international counterparts, the two-level gallery is filled with gorgeous colours and textures, creating a veritable visual feast. Flooded with natural light, it draws you in and encourages you to linger and admire the unique pieces that have been expertly collected and displayed by longtime art aficionado Michael Gennis. Michael grew up in McKellar Park; he remembers the Westboro of his boyhood with great fondness and confesses he always wanted to move back to the area where he now works and lives. “I wanted to invest in this community and I knew this would be an ideal location for a gallery like this,” he says. “I also want to be able to give back to local artists whose work is consistent with the other artists I am showcasing. I get a real buoyant feeling from my deep connections to Westboro. I feel that this gallery is my gift back to the neighbourhood I love.” The gallery bears Michael’s name because it speaks to his vision as well as his personal enthusiasm for art. “I decided to put my name on the door because I am proud of the work I am doing here. I get a lot of feedback regarding the high calibre of the art I choose,” explains Michael. “I pick what grabs my attention and appeals to my eye; thankfully that resonates with many other people as well. I feel very strongly that from the perspective of both the creators and the collectors, art helps us communicate who we are to others.” Michael had been building an impressive personal collection for fifteen years before he decided to make a career out of his passion for art. “I looked at artists in my own collection and travelled extensively in Europe to find out what was selling elsewhere. I am excited by the unique variety of items I have on display now; mine is really the

only gallery in Ottawa focusing exclusively on art glass, sculpture and high end contemporary works.” His judicious use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter (@mgennisgallery) helps to keep collectors apprised of trends in the industry as well as recent latest acquisitions. Michael’s personal touch extends to providing consultative services, whereby he is invited into people’s homes and then helps them choose art that suits their space and tastes. “One of the aspects of this that I particularly enjoy is researching and locating new artists and pieces. There is a big difference between buying art for décor and buying art for art’s sake.” Ultimately, Michael’s goal is to help people build their own collections. “I know from experience what joy and satisfaction that can bring. I’ve worked hard to accumulate for the gallery a stable of extraordinarily talented artists working in sculpture, glass and visual media including paintings, lithographs and mixed media. I am constantly learning and I believe my enthusiasm for it is reflected in the atmosphere I have created here in the gallery.”

hen it comes to eyewear, it’s reassuring to deal with people whom you can trust and are offering the most up-to-date products. Capital Optical, founded in 1985, has grown to four locations in Ottawa, including at the Westgate Shopping Centre, for exactly those reasons. “The cornerstone of our company is caring, personalized service,” explains founder and owner Alex Grieb. “On top of this we strive to be innovative and stay on the cusp of new technology. It’s a formula that has been extremely successful for us. For example, we were one of the first opticians in the city to adopt HD progressive lenses four years ago; these offer increased visual areas of up to 30% over conventional lenses.” Capital Optical also pioneered the use of the innovative Opticam. It has a touch screen monitor that allows people to take a photo of themselves wearing frames, then display them individually or four at a time on screen. “This allows customers to wear their existing glasses and clearly see the new styles of eyewear on themselves. It is a fantastic tool to help select frames with greater ease and confidence.” Capital Optical’s newly renovated Westgate shop is a full-service location, featuring a staff doctor to conduct eye exams as well as an onsite lab. “We are able to offer one hour service on many single vision lenses, including those coated with anti-reflection and scratch-resistance. We also have high index lenses suited to people with more complex prescriptions,” says Alex. The firm places great importance on offering value while still maintaining rigorous standards of quality. Rather than offering occasional specials, Capital Optical is known as the ‘2 for 1+’ company, with a flexible buy one get one free program. Clients can get two pairs of eyeglasses for themselves, a clear pair and nice pair of polarized sunglasses, or even share the special with another

family member. As a completely local firm, Capital Optical is able to select unique brands of prescription eyewear and all major contact lens brands. They carry larger, well-known eyewear lines as well as smaller ones and feature a great selection of European frames as well. All lenses, coatings and many frames come with a two-year warranty. With four locations – in Kitchissippi, Orleans, Bells Corners and Carleton Place, convenience is paramount at Capital Optical. “We can maintain continuity of service for people all across the region; often they will visit one location then pick up their glasses at another. The same warranties apply to all locations as well.” Alex cites the many returning customers as proof that people are satisfied with Capital Optical’s service. “I think they also enjoy the friendly atmosphere and personalized attention. I take so much pride in my work and enjoy working with people who share my desire to serve people extremely well. I have some staff members who have been with us for twenty years or more, including our very skilled Westgate Optician, Raymond Dubé. I think that says a lot about what kind of place Capital Optical is.”

Pet care a family affair at Critter Jungle

W

hen Kelvin Stanke first drew up a business plan for a pet store in one of his college business courses, he had no idea that he was sending himself on a lifelong career path committed to the health and welfare of pets and their owners. “Retail has always been in my blood,” says Kelvin, whose father owned a paint store in the same mall as Critter Jungle at Hampton Plaza. Noticing that the area had several pet food stores but was lacking in full-service pet stores, Kelvin and his brother Jeff took a leap of faith and opened the doors to their new store in 1986. Over the years, they more than tripled in size, stocking a wide selection of animals, food, toys and many other pet-related items in their 4500 square foot space. Free parking and a location next to the Carling exit of the Queensway are an added convenience for their customers. “At first there was a steep learning curve,” Kelvin explains, but the family threw themselves into the project, learning everything they could about animal health, nutrition and well-being. These days at Critter Jungle you can chat with specialists for small animals, birds, and cats and dogs. You’ll also find exotic pets for sale like bearded dragons, ball pythons, tarantulas, frogs and geckos, lovebirds, and tropical fish. The store no longer sells cats and dogs,

however, because so many of them come from ‘puppy mills’ and other places that aren’t good for animal welfare. Ultimately, the Stankes are advocating for stricter government regulations to protect animals. They do, however, support rescue animals, working to match them up with new, loving homes. Kelvin’s decision to open a pet store was a success in more ways than one. “If I hadn’t opened Critter Jungle, I never would have met my wife,” he explains. Now, the venture is truly a family affair, and you can often find Kelvin’s wife Kristine, three of their daughters, and Jeff ’s two boys behind the counter or on the floor dispensing pet-friendly advice. The Stankes’ caring and concern for pet health can also been seen in the variety of healthful, natural pet foods they offer. “We are constantly researching new nutritional information,” Kelvin explains, “and we’ve been able to work with customers to help solve pets’ health or behavioural problems simply by adjusting the animals’ diets.” Believing that the best path to good health is feeding pets food that is close to nature, they offer a wide range of kibble, canned, dehydrated, raw and homemade foods. And most of the foods offered wouldn’t look out of place on high-end restaurant menus, with flavours for cats and dogs like

Critter Jungle

Duck and Sweet Potato, Salmon Tunalini, Beef Frittata, and Surf and Turf, all made with natural ingredients. The Stankes believe that what sets them apart from the competition is their commitment, compassion and caring for both animals and people. In the end, Kelvin and his family have a simple message: “You can expect loyalty, caring and a knowledgeable staff from the store that provides for your pet’s needs.”

Classical and contemporary design

f the word ‘suede’ conjures up visions of soft, sumptuous fabrics, modern lines and inviting home spaces, then Ron Boivin was right on trend with his elegant Westboro home interior business, Suede Contemporary Interiors. What began as a modest 1,700-squarefoot home accessories store in 1997 has evolved into an expansive new ‘whole home’ showroom on Richmond Road, in the heart of trendy Westboro. With 7,000 square feet of furniture, lighting, wall coverings, carpets, accessories and more, Suede has now become Ottawa’s premier source for casual contemporary home interior needs. Suede’s philosophy is simple: to create a contemporary living space that reflects the qualities we embrace in our lives. Suede owner Boivin believes that everyone’s idea of home may be unique, but we’re all looking for a space that feels warm, comfortable and inviting. “At the end of the day we all want to go home to a space that feels safe and comfortable,” explains Boivin. As designer and primary purchaser at Suede, Boivin knew from day one he wanted to focus on the talents of Canadian suppliers and designers, which now accounts for nearly 85 percent of the store’s inventory. He uses his keen understanding of how Ottawa shops when looking for new products and brands. The Soloway JCC is more than a community centre. It’s a community affair. In the spirit of togetherness, health and community giving, Ottawa’s Jewish Community Centre welcomes all walks of life through its doors.

I

n Ottawa’s west end, a unique and bustling centre has been welcoming the community through its doors for more than 60 years. Settled in its current home since 1998, the impressive Soloway Jewish Community Centre (SJCC) can be found at 21 Nadolny Sachs Private in the family friendly neighbourhood between Carling and Broadview Avenues. In the spirit of promoting health and wellness, togetherness, and involvement the centre lives and breathes by its mission to make great things happen throughout the community, thanks to the founding vision of the SJCC team. Community centres have always been a gathering place to get involved, get active, share and learn and the SJCC is no exception. Pamela Rosenberg, marketing and communications coordinator encourages people from all walks of life to join. “Everyone is welcome at the SJCC,” says Rosenberg. “We are open to everyone and have something for everyone to do here no matter what their age or interest.” With close to 4,500 members and counting there is no shortage of services and activities to try. And the list is always growing. “The Soloway JCC is a warm and friendly place and we have something for everyone from programs for parents with new babies to seniors,” says Rosenberg. “A membership at the SJCC is more than just belonging to a health club. Members get priority pricing and registration on tons of classes and programs

like languages, art, ballroom dancing, lectures and unbeatable summer camps and afterschool programs for kids.” The Centre’s Fitness Centre has been fully equipped with state-of-the-art fitness machines and weight training equipment for even the most competitive workout warrior, and Nutritional Counsellors and Personal Trainers are on hand to help you reach your fitness goals. Whether your goal is to shape up, lower your body composite or strengthen your core, the spacious Fitness Studio offers a packed schedule of on-trend classes including Pilates, yoga, bootcamps, cardio kickboxing, zumba and kettlebells as well as specialty fitness classes for kids and teens. The SJCC has partnered with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to offer Heart Wise Exercise which offers safe and effective programs for people with cardiac disease. A large air-conditioned gymnasium at the SJCC is a year-round hub of activity. The suspended hardwood floor features an NBAsized court and glass backboards. The gym also accommodates floor hockey, touch football, volleyball and badminton. Squash and racquetball enthusiasts can also take advantage of two suspended hardwood courts that are adjustable with a movable glass rear wall. If you feel a need for serious speed, the spinning studio may be just the place for you. Fitted with 13 premium Schwinn bikes, the studio offers intense, high-octane workouts and an exciting alternative to the traditional

routine. You may feel inspired to punch the pedals en route to a Tour de SJCC stage victory! For those in search of a great indoor swim, the Centre’s four-lane pool is ideal for both the recreational cruiser and triathlon training shark. The pool has been converted to saltwater, which promises a better, healthier swim that is easier on the eyes and gentler on the skin. Additional pool features include an on-deck hot tub, special needs ramp and a generously sized kids pool. Male and female change room facilities offer a relaxing sauna and steam room. An extensive aquatic program makes swimming a fun family affair. New moms can get fit with parent and baby classes and a variety of children’s classes are available for infants, right through to high performance Bronze Star training for pre-teens. The SJCC also offers some unique specialty aquatic programs too, including lessons for autistic children and the hearing impaired. With summer just around the corner, one of the special features of the SJCC is its outdoor pool, which opens in June. Complete with patio lounges, tables and chairs, and shady areas for relaxing it’s an ideal way to share a day with the family. A great option to consider is their three-month summer membership, perfect for anyone looking to spend the warmer months by the pool, and maybe get their workouts in too. Summer usually means camping and the SJCC has an exten-

sive children’s camp program. Annual memberships are available at family friendly rates to suit everyone’s needs and restrictions. As mentioned, a 3-month summer membership provides flexibility and all the benefits of a full member. A very popular teen membership is a terrific way to continue a positive, healthy lifestyle beyond childhood, with lots of great classes and programs geared just to them. The SJCC is not just a community centre. It’s also about good community spirit. It’s a comfortable place to learn new skills, meet new people, become an active part of a community and - perhaps most importantly - to have fun. It’s a community affair. “This is an open, bright space with lots of smiling faces,” says Rosenberg. “It has a welcoming and friendly vibe. People feel at home here.”

hat do a trumpet, a Chinesepatterned vase and a pair of ice skates have in common? They’ve all been turned into lamps by the talented lighting experts at Arevco Lighting. This family-owned business was opened by John Arevian in Montreal over 35 years ago as Avenue Hardware. The store sold many light bulbs, specializing in importing the brightest and longest lasting bulbs available. As the family business grew, he expanded his product lines, importing fixtures as well, and, in 1975, Avenue Hardware became Arevco Lighting. Eleven years ago his daughter, Hera Arevian and her husband, a general practitioner, were looking for a change, and decided to open a second location in Westboro. “We loved the area and appreciated how so many customers were committed to shopping local,” Hera explains. Arevco offers lines that can meet all your lighting needs, from floor lamps to chandeliers to track lighting. The one common denominator among all their products is their good quality. “We don’t sell products that are disposable,” she says, “something that you’re going

Our goal is to offer products that are both stylish and lasting.” Arevco Lighting offers a wide selection of decorative light bulbs, fine lamps, shades, and accessories. They also fabricate their own line of fixtures using quality parts imported from Italy and France. Refurbishing or repairing older lamps as well as repurposing sentimental objects as lamps are important components of their business. “We can turn almost anything into a lamp,” Hera says, adding that some of the

most unique items, like an antique fire extinguisher or sewing machine can be transformed into wonderful and useful ways to light up your rooms. The knowledgeable owners and staff at Arevco place a huge importance on customer service. When you set up an appointment for a consultation, you’ll find that their years of experience mean they consider aspects of your lighting needs that you many not have thought of. “The staff at Arevco helped me rework the lighting set-up of my kitchen and family room,” says Judy, a dedicated Arevco customer. “The classic style we eventually settled on will stand the test of time no matter how I update the décor, and the new lighting made the rooms warmer and more welcoming.” Just as Westboro has grown and changed, so has Arevco and the store is preparing for their move to a larger location at Clyde and Laperriere (the Westboro locations will also remain open for the time being). The new location offers free parking, a larger show room, and a consultation area where you can comfortably discuss your lighting needs.

“We love Westboro so much,” says Hera, “it was important for us to move somewhere close to our clientele.” Because they have so many repeat customers and a loyal following, the new location was important for them so they could provide optimal customer service and convenience. “We want to thank our customers for helping make Arevco the business it is today, and look forward to welcoming them at our new location very soon.”

At the forefront of technological innovation Dr. John E. Hill (left) and Dr. Robert L. Ganske are two of five dentists at Holland Cross Dental Centre that are leading the way in state-of the-art dental procedures.

hether you’re two or you’re eighty-two, Holland Cross Dental Centre is the place to go for all your dental needs. The convenient location close to the Queensway and and Transitway are just the start of why you can trust your smile with the professional and caring staff at Holland Cross Dental Centre. Dr. Derek Turner and Dr. Berne Reesor founded Holland Cross Dental Centre in July of 1989. The Turner team is a vital component to the success of the office. Dr. Turner enjoys teaching and clinical dentistry and has been practicing for over thirty years. Dr. Reesor is semi-retired, living in Brockville and is at the Centre when other dentists are on vacation. With eighteen dental operatories, ten hygienists, five dentists and seven assistants, you can be sure that you’re in capable hands. The staff at Holland Cross Dental Centre understand that some dental procedures can seem intimidating, which is why they take the utmost care to explain every aspect of your visit. Knowing what to expect and why will help you feel more comfortable. Holland Cross Dental Centre has gone green, using a digital x-ray process to examine teeth. Not only does this method expose you to less radiation than it takes to microwave your cup of morning coffee, it also means there are no disposable radiographs, heavy

metals, lead lined packets and solutions used in the process. Holland Cross Dental Centre is at the forefront of technological innovation. Crown and bridge treatment will restore lost teeth, support remaining teeth and help you maintain optimum dental health. At Holland Cross Dental Centre we are able to provide different dental technologies to patients. Usually when a crown is required to repair a broken tooth, it is a procedure that involves several visits. At Holland Cross Dental Centre, we have a process that is both streamlined and extremely innovative using an advanced instrument called CEREC. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair, causing less discomfort and creating satisfying results. CEREC® is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The dentist can restore a tooth in a single appointment using a high-quality tooth coloured ceramic material. This process creates biocompatible, non-metallic, natural looking restorations from durable high-quality ceramic materials without the need of temporary fillings. Your replacement tooth is manufactured right on site with CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and milling machine in one instru-

ment. The dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate picture of the tooth preparation. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a colour computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and automatically creates the restoration while you wait. Finally, the dentist bonds the new restoration to the surface of the tooth. For minor procedures Holland Cross Dental Centre offers no-drill fillings with Air abrasion, also called “microabrasion”, a method of tooth structure removal considered an alternative to the usual dental drill. You will save both time and the need for anesthetic. Holland Cross Dental Centre is pursuing its commitment to innovation through a glassed-in operating theatre, which allows Dr. McCullough to work with colleagues to conduct an Implant Mentorship program. The use of a video camera allows other dentists to watch the procedures, such as a sinus lift or sinus bumps, gum grafts, and implant placements. Dr. Robert L. Ganske, feels your pain; when he was young, he received a hockey injury that required extensive dental work, and for over twenty years his commitment has been to understanding patient needs. He has also donated his time as a dentist to help the underprivileged in Ecuador.

Holland Cross’s Dr. John E Hill is also interested in implementing the latest technology; using the Bioloase MD a dental laser and the orthodontic technique, Invisalign, an alternative to full mouth braces. The staff is comfortable addressing a variety of complicated dental issues. Dr. Timothy Winlow, for example, completed a Multidisciplinary Residency Training program at the Montreal General Hospital. As a result, Dr. Winlow thrives on treating patients with complex medical conditions, and he has gained extensive prosthodontic and surgical experience. This combination of professionalism, technological innovation, experience and caring means Holland Cross Dental Centre is the place to go for all your family’s dental needs.

t might be surprising to hear of a law firm which identifies maintaining a genuinely enjoyable work environment as one of its founding principles, but Mann & Partners, LLP, is not your traditional, conservative law firm. Formerly known as Mann & Associates, the firm evolved into its present form in 2003 and now boasts a team of fifteen lawyers and sixteen support staff, all of whom believe in having a good time in the office and are not afraid to make that positive atmosphere apparent to clients. “We are truly a friendly place to be and we try to make our clients feel comfortable when they are going through the best and worst times of their lives,” explains partner Heather Austin-Skaret. “The client is paramount and we focus a great deal of effort on ensuring they are fully supported and informed to make the decisions they need to.” Mann & Partners is a full service firm providing a broad range of legal services to a diverse clientele, both individuals and businesses. Areas of specialty include family and business law, commercial and residential real estate, personal injury, litigation, condo development, wills and estate planning, employment law, bankruptcy and more. “We pride ourselves on having achieved a great balance between experience and youth,” says Heather. “Many of our lawyers are below the average age for Ontario

ith the motto “We Teach Children, Not Skills” always at top of mind, the Ottawa Gymnastics Centre is focused, first and foremost, on a child-centred learning experience. “We’re concerned with the development of a child as a whole, we’re not just teaching gymnastics,” says Kellie Hinnells, the centre’s executive director. From the ABCs of athleticism – Agility, Balance and Co-ordination – to socialization skills and time management, the OGC is dedicated to giving students a holistic experience. Established in 1960, the Westboro notfor-profit centre’s unique and varied programming offers activities for children as young as eight months old, including the innovative Babynastics classes, which are based on teaching movement and socialization to tiny tots. OGC also provides trampolining classes, special needs programming, and competitive training. “We get a lot of parents indicating how much our programs have helped their children,” says Hinnells. With the increasing focus on the physical activity levels among children and on the rise of childhood obesity, Hinnells says there’s a strong interest in keeping kids active. Of course, adults can benefit as well from the centre’s programming, which includes breakdancing and drop-in

recreational classes. The key for the OGC is making it fun for students, something that the centre helps ensure with its top-notch staff, some of whom have been at the centre for more than 25 years. All of them, notes Hinnells, are certified according to the National Coaching Certification program from Gymnastics Canada, and staff are encouraged to pursue their professional development in order to maintain the quality of OGC’s programming. “They’re the face of our gymnastics program,” says Hinnells of the centre’s coaches, explaining why it’s so important for the OGC’s staff to keep up with their training. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, she notes, with many clients remarking on how outstanding OGC’s employees are. In fact, quality and standards are such a focus for the centre that in December, it became one of the few athletic clubs to obtain an ISO quality management certification, something that’s normally done only by industries. “We went through an extensive process and wrote down all of the policies and procedures related to our business,” says Hinnells, noting that that includes everything from how the centre registers its students to its working practices. “It’s something that bodes well for our overall organization.” As such, it’s no wonder that the centre

has a yearly membership of more than 3,000 people, with its client list including athletes on the women’s artistic gymnastics team in

the 2004 Summer Olympicsin Athens. “We have very strong programs, with good results,” adds Hinnells.

f a space can have a true spirit then ORESTA organic skin care apothecary is fulfilling its destiny. This Hintonburg store first served as an apothecary a century ago. In fact, the original oak cabinetry that at one time held herbs and unguents now houses an amazing selection of organic skin care and beauty products. There is a timeless, welcoming atmosphere you feel the moment you enter the store. When owner Laryssa Korbutiak first opened the doors to her store two years ago, she had been a critical care nurse for over twenty years. Her change in career was inspired by her sister Oresta, who owns ORESTA organic skin care in the Glebe. The change was an extension of her commitment to caring for people, her interest in wellness for herself and her family as well as her own battle with acne. “It feels good to be able to help people who come in with skin-related concerns, whether it be acne, aging or reactions to strong chemicals” she explains. Laryssa’s sister Oresta first decided to start this business when, at the age of 26, while living overseas, she developed cystic acne. When she began to research the ingredients in skin care products, she was shocked to discover that many of the ‘natural’ products contained toxic synthetic ingredients that were hazardous to her health. Pregnancy for Oresta and Laryssa also brought about concerns for healthy products. ORESTA believes in beauty without compromising one’s health.

“ORESTA believes in beauty without compromising one’s health.” ORESTA is committed to avoiding products containing what David Suzuki calls ‘The Dirty Dozen’, a list of dangerous additives which include SLS, BHA, parabens, and petrolatums which are commonly found in personal care products. Instead, ORESTA specializes in organic and earth-friendly facial and body treatments while the beauty boutique carries an exclusive selection of carefully sourced organic products for the face, hair and body. “We know ingredient lists can be overwhelming,” Laryssa says, “and we are here to educate people to help them make healthy beauty choices.” Laryssa also provides a range of relaxing, rejuvenating spa services in the charming on-site treatment room. Known for their signature ORESTA facial treatments, all facials are individually customized to meet the clients’ specific skin care needs using Hungary’s Eminence Organic Skin Care products. In fact, the original oak cabinetry that at one time held herbs and unguents, then was the longtime home of Tony’s Shoe Repair, now houses an amazing selection of organic skin care and beauty products. In addition, ORESTA offers pedicures, waxing and organic spray tanning in a calming space surrounded by paintings by local artist Christopher Griffin.

ORESTA believes in supporting product lines which are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. Seaflora is made from hand-harvested premium quality seaweed from the Canadian Pacific Ocean and is committed to sustainable marine environments and the well-being of coastal communities. Kahina-Giving Beauty sources argan oil from women’s cooperatives in Morocco and donates twenty five percent of all profits back to the Berber women who harvest the oil. Kahina’s argan oil is a certified organic oil rich in Vit E and Essential Fatty Acids which restores skin elasticity, reduce signs of aging and heals problem skin. Arghand supports local initiatives in Afghanistan with their beautiful hand-moulded soap stones and pebbles, oils and balms created from the celebrated pomegranate seed oil, wild almond oil, licorice root, herbs and fruits of Afghanistan. ORESTA also features several organic cosmetic lines. Revolution Organics created by local entrepreneurs Melissa Shabinsky and Alexandra Zanella features lip glosses and balms. Afterglow Cosmetics is a complete line of cosmetics that includes mineral foundations, concealers, eye makeup, lipsticks and mascara. And there’s no need to feel intimidated by the large selection of wonderful products.

Laryssa and Kelly will take the time to listen to your needs and help you find the products best suited for you. ORESTA’s commitment to whole-body health for the entire family means you’ll also find fish oil supplements, natural sunscreens and hair care lines, including John Masters and Yarok. Even nail polish goes natural at ORESTA’s with the colourful, formaldehyde-free Cheeky Monkey Nail Polish. The names alone are worth a visit: Back Alley Sally, Dancing Queen and Cougar, to name a few. ORESTA ha recently opened a third location on Beechwood Ave. The extensive selection of natural and organic products, superior spa treatments and friendly and knowledgeable service will leave your mind and body pampered.

Education through experiential learning

E

lianna Saidenberg’s two daughters have both had wonderful experiences at the Westboro Jewish Montessori Preschool. “We actually switched our eldest to the school after visiting it and feeling enveloped in the warm atmosphere the moment we walked in,” she recalls. “The teachers are so loving and the physical setup is just like a family home; I think kids respond really well to that.” She notes that having a mixture of ages interacting together is a real plus. “The younger ones look to the older kids as role models who in turn enjoy serving as mentors. I believe this helps kids develop a lot of empathy; they learn about helping others, about setting a good example, and so on. That is a really special feature of this school that you don’t get elsewhere.” “It’s the kind of place where kids feel good, feel listened to. I like the way they deal with kids when they are not behaving perfectly. It is amazing to me what they expose the children to; there is nothing limiting about the program. They delve deep into the natural world which is a great beginning to science exploration. And in terms of language development and literacy the kids are so well prepared for future learning and growth.” “The kids come home excited about their progress and they get excited about each skill they learn and what they can accomplish. They get a sense of feeling capable and knowing they have useful skills. There is a sense of industriousness in the school; when you see kids engaged in an activity, even if it’s play, they are very focused.” Elianna notes that when students graduate from the Westboro Jewish Montessori Preschool, they seem better prepared academically than some of their peers. “Self-directed learning is a great beginning as it encourages children to try things and not worry as much about the outcome as we sometimes do.” Socially, they are also advanced in some ways because of the school’s emphasis on respecting others. We all want our children’s first educational experiences to be positive ones. No one takes this more seriously than the wonderful people at the Westboro Jewish Montessori Preschool who have been providing nurturing experiences for children aged 18 months to 5 years for two decades. The Montessori method was developed over a century ago to help young children reach their potential in a nurturing, supportive environment. “The philosophy is all about giving students the opportunity to pursue things of interest and forge ahead without having to

Dr. Elianna Saidenberg, her husband Dr. Doron Shmorgun and their children

wait for the rest of the group or without being limited by grade level and curricula,” explains Devora Caytak, director of the school. “Children of mixed aged groups are in the same environment involved in their own projects or working with others. It is an ungraded classroom in which each child receives individual attention and thereby learns at his/ her own pace,” she adds. “At the Jewish Montessori Preschool, children learn through play and develop a love of learning and a love of Judaism. We want to help them grow up to be proud Canadians and proud Jews.” A hallmark of the Montessori experience is hands-on, experiential learning. “Rather than simply reading to or telling children about things, we make each topic as interactive as possible. To help them better appreciate the Shabbat traditions, for example, we bake the challah with the kids. They create their bread, then smell it and taste it, along with singing songs and lighting the Shabbat candles. It becomes a much more memorable experience,” says Devora. The diverse, engaging program at the school is complemented by healthy snacks and hot kosher lunches prepared using organic fruits and vegetables. Busy parents appreciate the available before and after school care.

With its low student to teacher ratio, the Westboro Jewish Montessori Preschool offers a well-rounded program which not only exposes students to the broader world but also strives to reinforce the importance of family and community. To encourage the fostering of multi-generational bonds, parents and grandparents are welcomed into the school to participate in activities such as the upcoming Grandparents Day, featuring lunch, music and a special craft, on May 14. Similarly, the adjacent Jewish Youth Library helps students and their families maintain a sense of continuity and connection as they grow older. The children are also taken out into the community for special activities such as learning about and creating art at the 4Cats Studio in Hintonburg, or visiting the Experimental Farm to discover how bees make honey, a great tie-in to a Rosh Hashana activity – making honey cakes. Enrichment also comes in form of a music specialist who visits the school each week. “Research has proven that children who are exposed to music at a young age develop a very strong foundation for music and an increased aptitude for other learning as well,” explains Devora. “Music instruction improves spatial intelligence, plus it is something that all chil-

dren enjoy very much.” “Our family has had a wonderful experience with the Westboro Jewish Montessori Preschool. We have all – our children and us as parents – gotten so much out of being associated with the preschool,” says Elianna. “Our kids learn so much, are exposed to so much and most importantly they are happy. The special events are so enriching but the day to day activities are just as wonderful. I have had great confidence in all the teachers and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the school to others.”

Passion and problem solving = results

hether you need advice on commercial or residential real estate, immigration, business, family or tax issues, Kiera Le, Barrister & Solicitor at KL LAW, is here to listen to you. In December 2011, when a client was looking to sell his house in Avalon and move to a more central location in Westboro, Kiera helped him with the entire private sale process and was available to answer any questions. Both transactions went smoothly and now he is happily living at Soho Parkway, having received his keys three months ago. Although she’s experienced in many different areas of the law, since KL LAW is a small firm, you will be getting Kiera’s personal attention. No matter what legal issues you’re seeking advice about, she’s there to listen. KL LAW offers new clients a free initial one-hour consultation. This provides an opportunity for you to get to know Kiera and find out what she can do for you. “I’m here to help,” Kiera explains. Her efficient and results-oriented approach allows clients to clarify their needs. There is also no need to worry about a costly, drawn-out legal process because she is upfront about whether she believes she can help you or not. KL LAW offers a comprehensive and integrated service that creates effective legal solutions. One thing that really sets KL LAW apart is Kiera’s passion about so many aspects of her work. “I like that each case is different from the last, the variety of clients I get to meet, and

Kiere Le creates effective legal solutions for a wide variety of cases and clients

what I love most is being a problem-solver for people who need help,” she says. As a life-long learner, she adds, “I like when my clients are able to teach me new things about their businesses and lives, which enables me to help them better.” Tax litigation is Kiera’s favourite type of case. She can help defend against CRA regarding unfiled tax returns, unreported income, as well as disputes related to GST or income tax assessments, notices of objection, voluntary disclosure, and appeals to tax court. For one small-business owner who was incorrectly reassessed for multiple years for income tax and GST liability, with her limited English, she

was unable to deal with the CRA or speak her case to hire a lawyer. Since Kiera is fluent in Vietnamese, through KL LAW, the client was able to accurately present the facts. After several levels of review at the CRA, Kiera was able to successfully appeal these re-assessments to tax court, saving her client thousands of dollars in tax liability. For residential real estate matters, she offers competitively priced service for purchase, sale, and refinance transactions as well as a complementary service for residential files for the initial consultation review of the agreements of purchase and sale. For business clients, she deals with the purchase or sale of a business, federal and provincial incorporation, drafting of partnership agreements, shareholder agreements, and review and drafting of lease/offer to lease. KL LAW is also your place to go for all types of immigration matters including applications for permanent residency, visitor’s visas, foreign workers, PR cards, citizenship, spousal and family sponsorships, and federal court and immigration appeals. “I look beyond the forms and really listen to your story in order to present your application in the most favourable light” she explains. A recent real estate client puts it best: “Kiera has provided us with exceptional services in regards to our real estate purchase. She was knowledgeable and very professional. She was able to answer all our questions in a fast and efficient manner. She always contacted us

throughout our entire process and followed up with any problems that occurred. Purchasing a house is a very happy and stressful time. Thank you so much for your patience walking us throughout the entire process and answering our many, many questions making it so much easier.” Located in the heart of Hintonburg, KL LAW is both convenient and welcoming, and the office has free 2 hour street parking and is bus-accessible. hen I was twenty-one years old my mother gave me a beautiful family heirloom for my birthday – I hate to complain about such a generous gift, but it was really out of style! Five stones, in an ostentatious setting. Champagne problems, I know, but it was too large and too old-fashioned for a 21-yearold student and it sat in the jewellery box forever. I wish I had known about Conger’s Jewellers at the time – they specialize in doing original design, repairs, jewellery restoration and appraisals. David Conger started his own jewellery business over 30 years ago. As a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica California, David began as a gemologist providing independent appraisal services to thirty of the finer jewellery stores in Eastern Ontario. During this time he identified the “best practices” that he wanted to incorporate into the store he dreamed of opening in the future. Then about 20 years ago David opened Conger’s Jewellers in an out-of-the-way office location on the second floor of Hampton Park Plaza – it was the “Hidden Gem” of Hampton Park, everyone used to say. Six months ago Conger’s Jewellers moved to a street level store in the mall but Conger’s is still a gem, even if it’s not so hidden. Every member of the staff at Conger’s is an experienced jewellery professional. Dina, Valerie and David combined have

over 50 years experience designing, redesigning, repairing and appraising jewellery. They are all experienced and talented original jewellery designers but a growing segment of the business is redesigning or restyling outdated jewellery. Redesigning a piece is a perfect way to improve inherited jewellery, or to bring an older piece into the 21st century while still honouring the memories of the people and the times the gems represent. People who redesign their jewellery are interested in taking an

Keeping things current by designing something that is “one of a kind” is a way Conger’s Jewellers gets jewellery out of the drawer and on display. When you bring your old jewellery into the store for a consultation, the staff will discuss your needs and preferences, which can take about twenty minutes to half an hour. with several design options, you tentatively select one and a price is determined. If there is agreement, a wax model is made of the item to ensure complete satisfaction. If all is well, Conger’s will proceed to manufacture the piece. The client is intricately involved throughout the process, making the final piece both personal and unique. I wish I had considered a redesign of my mother’s beautiful but inappropriate ring, it would not have sat hidden for the last 20 years. Oh well – no regrets I’ll just head over to Conger’s Jewellers and transform it into something perfect and unique for me.

California Closets designs solutions

Store Manager, Cheryl Adams points out that the design process goes far beyond mere aesthetics.

n a perfect world, every corner of your home would be neat, organized and pleasing to behold. Few of us manage to achieve this; in fact, clutter and chaos is one of the biggest stressors of modern life. If you want to tackle the organizational issues in your home, look no further than Westboro’s California Closets. We’ve all heard it said that kitchens, bathrooms and storage are the three features that are most likely to help – or hinder – in the selling of your home. It goes without saying then, that having well organized storage spaces definitely increases the value of one’s home; this is particularly true of condominiums where storage space is sometimes limited, and that’s why California Closets provides such an invaluable service. “We have organized everything from a foot of space to thousand square foot luxury dressing rooms and garages,” explains Cheryl Adams. “We provide a huge range of products and accessories to help you make the best use of any storage space in your home. This includes full installations of personalized bedroom closets, home offices, garage systems, pantries, libraries, home entertainment units, mudrooms, kids’ room storage and more.” Forget cheap laminates and wire baskets – a California Closet solution is as personalized as your décor. “We can design a solution that is either sleek and modern, country or classic – we are not limited by standard

products as every job we do is custom-made for the client,” says Cheryl. “It’s surprising how much angst people feel about clutter and being disorganized, whether it’s at home or at work. It really is stressful,” she adds. “Amazingly, it’s been proven that you can actually lose weight in a more organized space. A properly designed storage space looks beautiful and is easy to keep tidy. Once you’ve had an organized closet or cupboard, you’ll never go back.” The process used successfully by California Closets for many years is designed to be collaborative, she notes. “We make an appointment and then visit with you at your home or business. Rather than simply looking at the space you want to improve, we also take a good look at what you want to store in it so that it can be organized very purposefully for you. We ask questions and listen carefully so we understand whether you want a place to tuck things away or something more dramatic where items can be on display. Figuring out what your goal is for the storage area is essential before we can work together to come up with a design that suits your needs, your taste and your budget.” Cheryl is quick to point out that the design process isn’t simply about what will look good; in fact, it goes far beyond mere aesthetics. “Function is just as important. Will the things you want to store be accessible and therefore continue to bring you enjoyment? Will they be protected from heat

or light if necessary? We consider many elements in our consultation process to be sure we create a system that will provide years of use and enjoyment.” Once the design has been finalized, installation typically takes place about four to six weeks later. It’s important to note that California Closets uses only its own trained technicians to install their systems; that way clients can be assured they are getting top quality from end to end in the process. While California Closets is not the only company in this industry, they are the leader with the most amount of experience. With over 100 locations world-wide, it’s clear that California Closets are setting the standard for others. “What makes California Closets stand out is that we are the brand that everyone else wants to be,” confirms Cheryl. “It’s really very flattering that other companies model themselves after us but the fact is, we’re hard to match in terms of quality, workmanship and service. The fact that we are a large company means we can give our customers so much more, not only in terms of research and developing new products, but also in our lifetime warranty.” And while California Closets may be a global company, they operate like a small local business. “We’ve been serving the Ottawa area for over 20 years and opened our beautiful Richmond Road showroom seven years ago,” says Cheryl. “Because we are locally-owned, we place a strong emphasis

on helping out in the community. We regularly participate in awareness-raising and fund-raising events to support the causes that are most important to our employees. We have worked with many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa, the CHEO Dream Home Lottery, Bruce House (AIDS hospice) and other local initiatives geared towards women shelters and children’s associations. What’s the most common reaction Cheryl gets from customers? “Most say, ‘why have I waited this long to call you? I should have done this sooner and I can’t believe how fabulous the space looks.’ People are really quite thrilled when we bring a measure of order to their lives. Often clients find they can store more once they’ve implemented a California Closet system because all the space is being used more effectively.”

Absinthe serves up comfort and conscience with flair

hef Patrick Garland’s career has come full circle. Since growing up in the Parkdale Market area and working in restaurants to get a decent meal, he’s now chef and owner of Absinthe, one of the trendiest and most popular restaurants in Wellington West. After doing a formal apprenticeship and training at the Dubrulle French Culinary School in Vancouver, Pat returned to Ottawa to work as a chef. “I didn’t plan to open a restaurant” he says, “but everything just fell into place.” He opened the doors to Absinthe in 2003, a contemporary Canadian soul food restaurant. Pat’s professional training doesn’t mean that the ambiance is stuffy—quite the opposite. “You can come in here dressed in your wellingtons, you can laugh too loud, put your elbows on the table all at once and nobody cares” he says. “We want you to feel comfortable here on your first date as a teenager and on your fiftieth wedding anniversary.” That casual attitude doesn’t apply to the food. Though many restaurants claim to ‘think globally, buy locally’, Absinthe takes this sentiment to a whole new level. With a strong relationship to local farmers, Pat sources as many of his ingredients as possible from Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. Absinthe also has a comprehensive environmental policy; recycling everything, from paper, cans, glass, plastic and cook-

ing oil to food waste that is composted and shipped out to Mariposa Farm as pig food. Large planters are found in the parking lot for growing herbs and microgreens used in the restaurant. On Earth Day, you can stop by their darkened dining room for a meal completely by candlelight. The variety and quality of local ingredients make for a unique dining experience. At lunch, you may find a Croque Madame

“Absinthe offers food and service that leaves you pleasantly lucid.” with Quebec artisanal cheeses, a Monte Cristo with Mariposa Farm Duck Confit or their signature Steak Frites, which has been dubbed as one of the city’s 101 must-try-before-you-die ‘tastes’ by Ottawa Magazine. A varied dinner menu may offer you the choice of dishes such as a Yellowfin Tuna Tartar, Scallop Crudo and Yuzu; Crispy Ontario Rainbow Trout or House Agnolotti with Braised Lamb. And if you’re looking to enjoy a satisfying feel-good dish, try their famous Benevolent Burger. A juicy patty topped with aged cheddar and house bacon. And if that wasn’t enough, with every burger sold, $1 is donated to

Cornerstone Housing for Women which provides emergency shelter and supportive housing for women in the community. But Absinthe isn’t just for meat-lovers. “Their vegetarian options are so rich and tasty that even a dedicated carnivore will be licking their plate,” says Stacey, a devoted lunch customer. Just remember to save room for dessert: the light and airy Profiteroles or creamy, vanilla-scented Crème Brûlée are two menu mainstays. The wine list is quite varied, with a list of reasonably priced and interesting reds, whites, champagnes and dessert wines from around the world. And don’t forget Absinthe, the sweet, infamous drink the restaurant is named for. They offer a variety of absinthes, including the only genuine one made in Canada, Taboo from Vernon, B.C., and they serve up a selection of different cocktails made with the notorious spirit. It is not simply the long list of desirable dishes and drinks which makes eating here such a unique and enjoyable experience, but the service as well. As one satisfied customer, Lynn, phrased it, “The atmosphere was perfect. The food was great and the service was better!” From an easy and accessible location, to impeccable service, to a menu that includes a variety of delicious and affordable items; it is safe to say Absinthe has it all.

s patio season approaches, Westboro is set to welcome the arrival of its largest outdoor location for great food and drink, at the Clocktower Brew Pub. Although the first Clocktower opened in the Glebe 15 years ago, the Westboro location is actually the newest and largest Clocktower in the city, joining sister locations in New Edinburgh and the ByWard Market. In addition to its large patio, inside the Westboro Clocktower you’ll find a private function area, mezzanine and large foursided bar that just begs to be cozied up to. While the pub is spacious, it boasts a warm atmosphere that is unpretentious and relaxed. Like the other Clocktower locations, the Westboro team welcomes the walk in traffic that comes from being in a lively, urban neighbourhood. The Clocktower enjoys the services of Brewmaster Patrick Fiori, a genuine craftsman who excels at creating great tasting, full flavoured beers made in small batches with no preservatives or additives. Thanks to his attention to detail, the Clocktower offers five standard original brews – Kölsch (Blonde Ale), Wishart’s Bitter, Raspberry Wheat, Bytown Brown and Clocktower Red – along with rotating seasonal selections. This year, the Clocktower is honoured to have been selected as the Official Brewer for WESTFEST, so they will be adding a new, delicious seasonal beer to their lineup, the tasty and refreshing WestBrew which was previewed to great acclaim several weeks ago. “Our house made beers and amazing food sets us apart as a premier place for a dining experience,” says owner John Coughlin. “The Clocktower Brew Pub has earned a reputation for being a welcoming place that appeals to a wide demographic. We have families with young kids who like to come for brunch, and loads of sports fans who come to watch their favourite teams on our big screen TVs.” The Clocktower’s food is a little higherend than your typical pub, with its eclec-

tic menu offering something for everyone. They also offer a variety of specials, such as their longstanding and very popular Tuesday Wing night. In terms of the wine list, it too is varied, with a number of selections not typically found at the LCBO. “Our wine list has been carefully compiled to provide a range of wines, all of which offer good value and are a nice complement to our food,” explains John. Groups are always welcome at the Clocktower, whether you are dropping in after work or wanting to book a special function. They offer professionally-guided beer tastings for groups of ten or more, as well as beer and cheese pairings, sampling five hand-picked cheeses perfectly matched to their five original brews. “As we anticipate the opening of our patio, we are looking forward to a very busy summer season here at the Westboro Clocktower,” confirms John. “We already feel so welcomed by the community and we are so pleased to be here.”

Making Spaces Beautiful for over 20 years

ll across Kitchissippi, contractors’ signs and building permit notices are sprouting like spring flowers. Renovation and infill projects abound in our area, recognized by many as one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in Ottawa. If you’re thinking about a renovation or custom build project, wouldn’t you want to have Amsted Construction – recently recognized as having completed the best renovation in Canada – working on your dream home? Having completed over 100 projects in the Kitchissippi area alone, the Amsted team is proud to have put its stamp on so many homes. Founded in 1989, the firm is now a full service design-build company, ready to see each project through from the conceptual stage to the finishing touches. “We have evolved to enhance our offerings because it just makes good sense,” explains founder Steve Barkhouse. There are multiple benefits to working with an experienced design-build firm. Chief among these are the cost savings, administrative ease and improvements in delivery time that come from working with a company that offers all key services inhouse. “When we sit down with clients to plan a project, their budget is always on the table, right from the beginning. The design, planning and execution can thereby unfold in a very logical way, since we’ve worked to understand exactly what the client wants to accomplish and how much they wish to spend.” “Part of what makes our projects so hassle-free for clients is that our team is composed of highly skilled designers and builders, whom we bring on board from square one. These are folks who are experienced at assessing goals, exploring alternatives and recommending optimal solutions on everything from the design to the choice of finishes,” says Steve. “Having our staff, who are all employees of the firm, involved collaboratively in the design process is invaluable. They are the ones who have the hands-on experience. They know what materials are available, which ones are good to work with and they offer so much in their conversations with clients.” Steve says an added benefit of having the workers who will actually be on the job site involved in the consultative process right from the beginning is that by the time the crew gets down to work, they’ve already built the job in their heads so everything goes much more smoothly. The praise the Amsted team receives is substantial. Kate Whitfield and Rob

to go but we will provide all the guidance you need to make the right decisions.” Steve says in some ways green building is actually a very simple concept. “To us, green means sustainability, like using durable materials that are going to last. It’s also thoughtful construction; we think it’s more beneficial environmentally to build a project that is 200 square feet smaller but satisfies every need because of a fantastic, efficient design.” Clearly, the experts agree as for the past four years, Amsted has been the winner of Ottawa’s Green Renovation Project of the Year, just one of the many awards they’ve racked up. Amsted’s project roster includes more than just big renovations and custom builds, notes Steve. “We also have a full time team that does smaller projects; they service our existing clients who want something else done and also take on small projects for new clients, like a bathroom or a new deck, for example. We have been tremendously successful at this; we are now competing against companies that focus exclusively on kitchens and bathrooms, and winning awards for our work in these areas.” Amsted’s commitment to Kitchissippi is perhaps best demonstrated by the opening last year of their Highland Avenue ‘Amsted Living Room’, a beautifully renovated home which serves as a local meeting point for prospective, current and even past clients. “Having this location helps us stay more connected and have a better local presence, not only for our clients but also for the numerous charitable organizations with whom we work very closely,” says Steve. “People find our Living Room to be a convenient, cozy space to meet and finalize project details. “We are so pleased to now have an office in the community where we do so much work.”

Kate Whitfield and Rob Behrend

Behrend, are delighted with the results of Amsted’s work on their home overlooking Fairmont Park. “Your team was always professional and courteous; you exceeded our expectations in terms of attention to detail and professionalism. We would highly recommend Amsted Design-Build to anyone. Thank you for our beautiful ‘new’ home.” Steve is quick to credit his team with much of the firm’s success. “I often tell people the greatest thing we’ve built in the last 25 years is not sticks or bricks, it’s our team. We have many people who have been with us for 10, 15 and even 20 years. We are

grateful for their loyalty and I firmly believe our clients reap the rewards of working with people who are passionate about what they do and committed to Amsted’s values.” One of those values is Amsted’s longstanding commitment to eco-friendly work. “We have been green since the beginning. We built an R2000 house way back in 1990 before it was the popular thing to do. We stay abreast of all the latest innovations and can review with you all the green building options and related costs, and how they fit both your budget and lifestyle. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide how green you want

eople who experience the trauma of an accident or have been injured in a fall often suffer from a host of emotional, physical and often financial hurdles. One of the most important – but sometimes overlooked – resources to call upon in these circumstances is a personal injury lawyer. David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, has 14 years experience representing the victims of personal injury and their families. “My aim is to help those who have been hurt in a motor vehicle accident or injured as a result of a fall to obtain fair compensa-

David’s law practice includes a committed team of law clerks, an accident benefits specialist and an associate lawyer, working together to get the best results possible for every client. “We work very closely with our client’s rehabilitation team including medical professionals and family members to make sure we are well aware of our clients’ needs,” notes Hollingsworth. One key to his success is that David personally follows very closely new develop-

tion and to help them secure the necessary treatment and rehabilitation to get them functioning in all spheres of life, as well as possible, as quickly as possible. This almost always involves making a claim against an insurance company,” explains David. David has an impressive track record, successfully representing clients at all levels of court in Ontario including a recent victory at the Court of Appeal for a young woman who was rendered paraplegic due to a fall. “By the time someone comes to me, they have had their entire world turned upside down by an unexpected and unwelcome event that has resulted in an injury to them or a loved one,” says David. “These sudden events are traumatic. I have had many emotional first meetings around the kitchen table of a family who have just suffered a serious traumatic loss and have entrusted me to help them work their way through the complicated and intimidating insurance process. Our collective goal is always to obtain appropriate rehabilitation and treatments as well as fair compensation. This is extremely rewarding for me and it is why I do what I do. I cannot change the fact that someone has been involved in an accident, but I can help them rebound for the future.” “My goal is to be a strong, committed and compassionate advocate for each and every one of my clients.” While David’s aim is to achieve the maximum compensation for his clients without

This holistic approach is essential to reaching the ultimate goal, which is restoring the best possible quality of life for each individual client. David and his team of professional staff recognize the stress associated when faced with an accident or injury. They offer free, no-obligation consultations and assist with completing the complicated paperwork, and dealing on their behalf with insurance companies or other institutions which may not always have the client’s best interests at heart. “I have rarely met with a client who is receiving the full benefits to which they are entitled following an accident,” explains David. “If you or your loved one is injured, it is so important to seek out the benefits owing to you, so you can get back to enjoying life. This is why we have insurance.” David’s steadfast desire to help others extends to the community at large, as well. For several years, he has served on the Board of Directors for Reach Canada and has also been active with the Canadian Paraplegic Association and a sponsor of many events including Brain Injury Awareness Day and Bike Helmets on Kids, to name but two.

David’s work and community involvement have been recognized by a number of organizations including the Ottawa Business Journal’s Forty Under 40. For the past couple of years, he has coached and sponsored a team in the West End Hockey League and finds time to play hockey several times each week himself. “Each winter, I still enjoy the outdoor rink at Fisher Park where I learned to skate, where my dad learned to skate, and where my three kids have now learned to skate,” he says. “I sponsor the Elmdale Fun Fair and am also a sponsor of the Fisher Park soccer program. I love biking down to the field with my kids to participate in the rainbow of soccer players that fill the park each spring.” Contact David Hollingsworth, Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer at 613.237.4922 x 203 or 613.978.9549. ellington Street West is home to many family owned businesses; among the newer additions is Renu Massage Therapy & Spa which opened in August 2009. Co-owner and General Manager Matt Garrett and his family are overwhelmed by their success. “This neighbourhood has been so warm and welcoming. We are delighted to have so quickly become a respected business in the neighbourhood.” With a focus on advanced aesthetics, Renu offers a complete menu of spa services for men, women and teens. From facials to body wraps to a variety of massages including hot stone therapy, Renu’s highly trained, experienced staff are passionate about what they do and dedicated to making sure each spa visit is memorable. “One of the most frequent comments I hear is how professional, caring and friendly all our staff are,” says Matt. “We take great pride in having such a wonderful team. Everyone at Renu pays high attention to all the little details that make a visit to our spa more relaxing and satisfying. They share a true commitment to our clients.” To say the atmosphere at Renu is relaxing would be an understatement. From the soothing sounds of soft music to the ambient light-

ing and gentle voices of the staff, it’s easy to feel worlds away from daily cares while enjoying a spa service. “Our mission is to offer tailored treatments that deliver visible results, physical and mental rejuvenation and an overall sense of relaxation and well-being,” explains Matt. Each session begins with a consultation with a therapist so they can tailor your treatment to your needs and also select the appropriate products. For example, after completing a massage, stretching exercises may be recommended for you to do at home to prolong the benefits of the massage and keep you feeling strong and healthy. We also researched and have partnered with leading skin care companies such as Ilike Organic, SkinCeuticals and Pevonia Botanica to ensure that we provide the exceptional quality products which we use both in our treatments as well as have available for ongoing at home use,” says Matt. Renu’s amenities include five spa-therapy rooms, including their ‘room for two’, fully equipped with a two-person jet therapy shower. “ In addition, Renu’s pedicure/manicure room is large enough to accommodate up to seven guests at a time, ideal for groups wishing to enjoy aesthetic services together. We regularly host bridal parties, groups on a ladies’ day out, mother-daughter visits and more.”

Wall Space Gallery - Connecting people with art

I

f the thought of acquiring artwork for your home leaves you feeling nervous or intimidated, then you clearly haven’t been to Wall Space Gallery. It is arguably the most professional yet unpretentious gallery in Ottawa – home to scores of beautiful works and knowledgeable, friendly people that put you at ease the moment you walk in. Westboro became a little more beautiful when Wall Space Gallery, in business over 25 years, chose to open its second location on Richmond Road four years ago. With a vision of making fine art, jewellery and contemporary craft more accessible to clients, the gallery now represents over 50 carefully selected artists – local, national and international. You’ll find works in oil, pastel, encaustic, acrylic and more, crafted by established and emerging artists who are among their best in their respective media. Wall Space Gallery has established itself in Ottawa and beyond thanks to its busy calendar of vernissages and exhibitions. “The gallery is completely re-invented every three weeks when a new show goes up”, explains Trish Barr, gallery director. “The gallery holds group and solo exhibitions which rotate along with new works from the artists we represent. The gallery is a very dynamic space. It’s tremendously exciting to work with such talented artists. We encour-

age people to drop in regularly as our walls are always changing.” Stunning jewellery is another element that sets Wall Space apart. “We enjoy featuring pieces that our own staff would want to buy and wear. Everyone who works here has a good eye and tremendous sense of style. We like to focus on both local and regional artists.” The gallery also takes pride in its framing expertise. The emphasis is on determining what is best for the art from the initial design experience to completion. “We like to alleviate the intimidation clients might have about framing. We are confident that we can help clients display pieces at their finest,” says Trish. “Because we do all the work ourselves, we can offer topquality, timely service customized to suit any budget.” She notes that a big part of Wall Space’s framing business involves refreshing existing pieces. “Often a new frame can really enhance a piece, or bring it up to contemporary standards,” she explains. “There have been so many advances in the framing world, from UV glass to acid-free mats to digital cutting technology designed to preserve and enhance a piece. It’s amazing how much more enjoyment you can often get out of paintings or a collection of photographs when they’ve been re-framed. It’s like get-

ting a new piece of art.” The gallery works with experts in Art Conservation as needed, should cleaning or repairs be required. Seasoned collectors have long realized that Wall Space is a dependable destination to enhance their collections. “We offer art consultations for private homes and corporate locations,” Trish explains. “We offer the benefit of our experience to assist clients in making art choices that reflect their own tastes. People respond to art and it brings humanity to any environment. It can make a big difference to how people perceive a space and, by extension, the people in it.” Wall Space also offers installation and hanging services. “Art is an investment; it’s something that most people will have for decades if not generations so it is important to display it in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing but also safe. Whether you are looking for help in grouping a collection on a wall or installing an exciting new acquisition, we are pleased to help.” Proud residents of Kitchissippi, the owners of Wall Space Gallery enjoy living, working and playing in Westboro area. They are involved in many charitable initiatives including an annual jewellery event to raise awareness for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Programs. Wall Space Gallery’s unique blend of contemporary Canadian art, unparalleled

service and beautifully designed custom framing explains the gallery’s growing popularity. “We love that our clients have been enthusiastic in their response to the gallery,” enthuses Trish. “We have a diverse clientele from new art buyers to long-time collectors. It is our goal to be inviting and allow the time for clients to choose a piece without pressure. We even let people try a piece out in their home before they buy it, to be sure they love it and it suits their space. It is rewarding to connect people with art they will love and treasure for years.”

A Tradition of Excellence

Bourk’s Complete Car Care invests in state-of-the-art training and certification for its technicians to remain at the forefront of the industry.

Bourk’s Complete Car Care is a unique family business. It has succeeded four generations, spanning across two centuries. Bill and Gary Bourk trace their family’s success back to their great aunt and uncle, Murtle and Bob Bourk, who founded Bourk’s Ignition Ltd. seventy-five years ago. Their commitment to excellence and customer service laid the foundation for the company’s growth and continued success, one which has mirrored the growth and prosperity of the Westboro and West Wellington communities. The Bourks arrived in Westboro in 1952, with Bob and Murtle’s nephew Tom at the helm of the operation. By the early Seventies, the company had expanded from its original Belleville location to also include shops in Smith Falls, Kingston, Cornwall, Renfrew and Hull; they became well known in the automotive trade as a dependable source of knowledge, automotive parts and unparalleled service. The business continues with a third and fourth generation today as Tom’s sons Gary and Bill and Grandson Michael Lorint have followed him into the business, along with Tom’s nephew Curtis Azulay. In carefully building and maintaining its reputation as a full-service facility for domestic and imported vehicles, Bourk’s Complete Car Care provides complete electrical and mechanical care for cars and light trucks. As in the past, customers to-

day appreciate the highly specialized skills Bourk’s offers in the diagnosis and repair of all automotive systems. To stay on top of advances in vehicle technology, the company continually invests in new equipment. Furthermore, the company invests in stateof-the-art training and certification for its technicians to remain at the forefront of the industry.

“At Bourk’s we truly offer ‘Complete Car Care’. Every aspect of your vehicle is a concern to us since each experience with us will impact our reputaion.” Mike Gould, service manager, Hamilton Avenue location

In recent years, the auto industry has undergone revolutionary transformations. Adapting to change has been a part of Bourk’s success since the company began with a single delivery van more than seven decades ago. In the sophisticated and competitive auto service industry, Bourk’s is proof that a business can flourish by com-

bining the friendliness of family and personal attention with the strength of experience and expertise. “At the end of the day, good business is about pleasing people,” says Tom’s son Gary. By continuously upgrading equipment and the expertise of their staff, Bourk’s is maintaining its proud tradition of providing complete care for vehicles of all sizes and brands at their two locations – Hamilton Avenue North near the Parkdale Market and 4009 Carling Avenue in Kanata. Many of the staff at the Hamilton Avenue location have been with the firm for years, working first at the old Westboro shop which has been redeveloped into Westboro Station, a lovely blend of condominium and retail properties. Other staff have been drawn from successful comparable service facilities across the city and boast the same excellent training and focus on customer service. “At Bourk’s we truly offer ‘Complete Car Care’. Every aspect of your vehicle is a concern to us since each experience with us will impact our reputation,” says Mike Gould, service manager of the Hamilton Avenue location. “No detail is too small to talk with you about since preventative maintenance is the key to avoiding bigger more costly problems down the road. These are the values that set us apart and give you confidence on the road ahead.” As part of its comprehensive caring ser-

vice, Bourk’s is pleased to be involved in Ottawa’s award-winning “Take it Back!” Program which encourages local businesses to “take back” many of the household materials that they sell, and to ensure they are reused, recycled or disposed of properly, thereby diverting them from the landfill. The Bourk family and everyone on the Bourk’s team recognizes that it is their unwavering attention to personal detail that continues to make clients feel like they are part of the family. “We are proud of our reputation and work to maintain your trust and confidence in us every day,” says Gary Bourk.

A treasure trove of delight

T

he right lighting can enhance any space, making it more dramatic, intimate or welcoming. A family business for nearly forty years, Architectural Antiques has been supplying unique fixtures and other décor elements to discerning buyers looking for the perfect piece to complement their home or business. Whether you are searching for a rare, vintage chandelier or seeking to have an heirloom fixture restored, look no further than Hintonburg’s Architectural Antiques. After being located for many years on Richmond Road in Westboro, the shop is now in a more spacious location just off City Centre Avenue, accessible via Scott or Albert Street. The shop’s vast and ever-changing inventory includes both indoor and outdoor lighting, as well as a number of other antiques including lighting fixtures galore, decorative accessories, garden items and more. Antique doors and fireplace accessories are frequently available, as are one-ofa kind vintage metalwork and iron items, industrial antiques such as factory cabinets, workbenches, lockers and decorative items. It’s the lighting, however, that sets this store apart from other antique shops. From small table lamps to grand chandeliers to eye-catching wall sconces and industrialtype vintage lighting, the selection is always impressive. Equally notable is the fact that many of the pieces offered for sale have been salvaged from sites slated for demolition,

then painstakingly refurbished. Architectural Antiques specializes in supplying fixtures suitable not only for private homes, but also for pubs, restaurants or retail stores looking to enhance their décor with memorable elements. Custom ironwork and blacksmithing services are also available in-house. “While recycling and repurposing are all the rage now, we’ve been reclaiming and resurrecting old architectural elements for decades,” explains Annette Doucher, the store’s manager. “Many of our clients are people who are restoring older homes and want to install lighting that is typical of the era in which the house was built. We also find a lot of new condo owners come in looking for something traditional to soften their home’s modern interior. One beautiful light can make a nice feature piece in a foyer or over a dining table,” she adds. Architectural Antiques is also able to build light fixtures, even replicating them from photographs or crafting duplicates. Often they are asked to help design and then create special pieces for custom homes. It’s not just homeowners that shop there; among the store’s regular clientele are contractors as well as decorators who are constantly looking for something distinctive and different than what can be found at big box stores. Repair work is another specialty, including rewiring older fixtures to bring them up to modern building code standards.

Store Manager, Annette Doucher, enjoys watching customers discover items in the store that they didn’t even know existed.

“We get so many referrals and I think that’s due to our emphasis on customer service and the fact that we offer items that simply are not available from catalogues or online,” says Annette. “We have a true passion for providing people with unique, attractive elements that enhance the character of their space. Just about every day, people find things in our store that they didn’t even know existed. It’s such fun to watch people walk in, browse, and then experience the delight of finding a treasure that they will cherish.”

Finding expression at OSSD

hether you have a song in your heart, a love of theatre, or are just looking for a way to express yourself more fully, the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama (OSSD) is for you. The school first opened in association with the National Arts Centre in 1988, and moved to Westboro several years ago on Picton Ave, just off Winona Ave. They converted a former garage into the perfect theatre training ground. “We now have four spacious studios to work in. ” explains Erin Downey-Silcoff. “The flooring is sprung so it is safe for the kids to run and jump and explore movement. As a result, we have become a hub of creativity in the city for children, adults, theatre professionals and students. We even have classes for people with special needs. We are for everyone.” And that means OSSD isn’t just for the dramatically inclined. Yes, drama classes are a natural for children and adults who are outgoing to shine, but for those who are a little shy these classes can be a great opportunity to conquer their fears and feel comfortable speaking in public. “Inside the school, you can be whomever you want to be,” Erin explains, adding that many children find this a safe place to try on different roles or aspects of themselves that they may not feel comfortable expressing when they’re at school. “And it’s not just for kids. At OSSD, adults can also find a playground away from their work life.” Not only do students learn to express

Classes at OSSD combine the fun of theatre with strong skill building for students of all ages.

themselves creatively, they also learn skills such as increased spontaneity and self confidence, an understanding of how the voice and body work as communication tools, and teamwork. But one of the greatest things that theatre promotes is empathy because you have to think about what other people must be going through. As Erin says “It is a great opportunity as you get to walk in someone else’s shoes as it were.” This summer, OSSD is running nine weeks of exciting summer camps in one- and two-week sessions. Kids aged 6-17 can spend time experiencing all aspects of theatre and

dramatic arts, from writing, acting, singing and designing sets, among other activities. Discover Drama, for example, is OSSD’s popular camp for young children ages 6-7 yrs old. Each day campers work with a variety of instructors to explore movement, sound, characterization, story-telling and poetry and they learn to craft and perform their own stories. The kids do it all, making the sets, costumes, masks or puppets that help to create the world of their performance. In Page to Stage, a two-week camp experience, aspiring actors get the chance to go through the process of taking a script into production. And if your kids are interested in song and dance – there are either single week or two-week Musical Theatre camps that will give them free reign to belt out everything from Disney favourites to the Broadway classics. Older kids can try their hands at Senior Performance Study, which is run in a workshop format that really allows teens to challenge themselves while working with some of the best in the city. These instructors include OSSD Alumnus and former Stratford company member Sarah McVie, vocal teacher Doreen Taylor Claxton and Montreal’s Andre Perrier. OSSD also runs a variety of programs throughout the year, fall, winter and spring; there is always something happening at the school Interested? A good way to learn more about the school is to come see one of the

classes final performances. This year the school’s performance classes are presenting Annie (May 3-5th), The Sound of Music (May 10-12th), the Canadian Premiere of Robyn Hood: Outlaw Princess, The Musical (May 17th-19th) and The BIG Friendly Giant by Roald Dahl (May 30-June 2nd). As OSSD has been running successfully for almost twenty-five years, graduates have been returning to become teachers and mentors, bringing with them their enthusiasm for the program and real-world experience in theatre and the arts. In the end, Erin explains, time spent at OSSD is time spent making connections: “It’s really about finding community.”

here’s something about Italian cuisine that is oh-so-satisfying. Who doesn’t crave fresh pasta, flavourful sauce, maybe some garlic bread to go with it? For the most authentic, delicious Italian fare, Parma Ravioli can’t be beaten. Brothers Giuliano – a certified Master Chef – and Carlo Zucconi, along with partner Richard Righi, knew they were onto a good thing when they began wholesaling 20 years ago and found there was a great market for freshly prepared, wholesome products. They decided to add a retail component when they opened their Wellington Street West shop in 1995 to capitalize on the area’s strong foot traffic. “We have always been proud to offer our retail customers the same restaurant-quality goods that hotels and catering companies enjoy,” confirms Richard. From the moment you step into their lively store, you’re enveloped in mouthwatering aromas, coupled with all the sights and sounds of a lively, old-world Italian food shop, decorated with flair. Take a moment to watch pasta being hand made in the back, before browsing through the carefullyselected Italian grocery items. Peruse the well-stocked freezers for a few goodies to tuck away for a day when you are too busy to cook, then choose a container or two of sauce and some fresh pasta – long or short – to take home and enjoy. “From our fresh pastas to our ‘heat and serve’ convenience foods, Parma Ravioli’s se-

lection is unmatched anywhere in Ottawa,” says Richard. “People often tell us that the first time they take our food home, it’s because it is convenient. Then they taste how delicious it is and they keep coming back. We have many customers who tell us our sauces remind them of what their nonna (grandmother) used to make. That’s a pretty big compliment.” Parma Ravioli’s selection is impressively vast. “You could easily serve 365 different meals, one for each day of the year, using our products,” he explains. “We focus on traditional foods as well as more upscale gourmet fare. The real value is the fact that we base our dishes on fresh, house-made pasta which gives our foods a much more satisfying texture and flavour. A big part of what makes Parma Ravioli’s products so delicious and fresh is our unique production process which sees skilled pasta makers and chefs recreating age-old recipes using high quality modern equipment,” explains Richard. Not to be missed are Parma Ravioli’s decadent desserts. Tiramisu and cannoli are made in house, with a local master baker augmenting the selection with a wide range of fresh mousse cakes, cheesecakes, pies and more. Many desserts are offered in individual serving which make for attractive and easy presentation. Packaged for convenience in a range of sizes, all of Parma Ravioli’s prepared foods are reasonably priced and come with heat-

ing instructions and ingredient lists. “We have a real diversified clientele – individuals shopping for themselves or for elderly parents as well as those feeding a family. We have people who come from all over the region to stock up; many tell us they deliver our foods to family members in hospital or to help out busy new mothers. Everyone appreciates how quick and easy our dishes are to prepare and the fact that they are created using local ingredients whenever possible, with no additives or preservatives.” In addition to their retail and wholesale operations, Parma Ravioli also offers a flexible, simplified catering service. “It’s a very streamlined operation which also makes it very cost effective,” explains Richard. “We go with the industry-standard sizing, selling foods by the full or half pan. Whether your group is 10 people or 200, you can enjoy the traditional flavours associated with Italian cuisine made fresh to order. We consult with you to help put together a menu and recommend the appropriate portions.” You can pick up your catering order heated and ready to serve, or take it to your event to reheat later. It’s ideal for family reunions, corporate events, parties and more. A more recent addition to the Parma Ravioli shop came about by popular demand – their busy X-press lunch counter which offers generous portions at surprisingly low prices. “From pasta to focaccia-style pizza to salads to our fan favourites, the chicken parmigiana

sandwich and meatball sandwich, this area really offers great variety. Dishes are prepared a la minute using our same great fresh pasta products.” “The business has evolved since we opened,” Richard adds. “We are constantly monitoring trends in the food industry and paying attention to what the public is looking for. We now offer whole wheat and spelt pastas, for example, and carry a specialty selection of gluten free grocery items as well. It’s all about giving people what they want and making our shop a pleasant place to visit. We are proud to have become Ottawa’s fresh pasta tradition.”

Practicing Integrity and Understanding

varied and interesting background can often lead to great career success. Such is the case with Hintonburg lawyer Nhung Hoang, who brings a host of experiences to her present role, having taught English in her native Vietnam before emigrating to Canada. A job in high tech preceded her studies at the University of Ottawa, and the founding of her law firm once called to the bar in 1990. Along the way, she’s also become a published poet. Her remarkable past contributes greatly to her skills as a personable law practitioner who is adept at guiding people through the legal process. With offices located in a heritage building at the corner of Wellington Street West and Rosemount Avenue, Nhung’s mission is clear. Her firm strives to maintain a high level of integrity and demonstrate the competence expected of the legal profession while also upholding the highest standards of ethics. Her practice includes family and business law, wills, powers of attorney and estate planning, immigration and real estate. “I went into law because I wanted to have a career working with people,” says Nhung. “I was in sociology at Ottawa U and I could have gone on to be a social worker, but I happily chose law instead. The favourite parts of my practice are getting to know people, learn about their lives, their problems and their history and then helping

Getting back to basics

uch like butchers, bakers and bankers, pharmacists have long been a cornerstone of village life. In Kitchissippi, the proudest symbol of this tradition is the Westboro Village Pharmasave, a community fixture for over 100 years. A business which has had a profound and positive impact on several generations of area residents, the Westboro Village Pharmasave has successfully kept pace with changing times to remain a thriving and essential enterprise. “As a century-old business, we have always had a large responsibility to the community and we take that very seriously,” says owner/pharmacist Mark Barnes. “Every day, we feel that historic pride of being Westboro’s pharmacy and we are cognizant of the position of trust we hold.” The business’ loyal clientele are proof of the Pharmasave’s successful efforts to stay relevant despite rapid change and intense competition in their sector. Mark says it’s very easy to be an outstanding pharmacy. “When you offer excellent service, you immediately differentiate yourselves from others. We looked at what has kept our business strong and realized that our focus on getting back to basics and helping people stay well is as important today as it ever was.” He cites such deliberate choices as investing in more staff while others were cutting back as an example of getting back to basics.

“It means that our pharmacists are now more available to patients and have the time to provide that personal touch. As an added bonus, we can also take pride in providing what could be the lowest wait times in the city.” The personal touch he refers to is evident

in many ways. The over thirty friendly staff that work at the Westboro Village Pharmasave know many clients by name and are quick to offer a hand to all who visit. “The atmosphere among our team is very much like a family and our customers can definitely feel that spirit. Everyone is so caring and efficient. This is simply the best team I have ever had the privilege to work with,” enthuses Mark. While steadfastly maintaining its emphasis on personalized service, the Westboro Village Pharmasave also works diligently to maintain its relevancy by staying abreast of new developments that will benefit its clients. A good example of this is its enhanced

medication management program. “We offer a service whereby our clientele can have all their medications delivered in compliance or ‘blister’ packs. These are excellent for safety and dosage reminders; we can even incorporate vitamins or supplements into the packages so everything a person needs is in one place. Best of all, our team of pharmacists can accurately monitor everything,” says Mark. “As a result, we now have hundreds of patients who rely on this service; it provides not only peace of mind for family members but also an ease of lifestyle and is also perfect for people who travel.” Among the other new initiatives launched at the Westboro Village Pharmasave is a hearing centre with an onsite hearing instrument specialist who is himself hearing impaired, so he has a great deal of empathy and personal experience to offer clients. “In addition, we are also very excited about our new Westboro Organics department which will launch this spring. We really wanted to enhance the offerings in the front of our store and address the growing demand for such things as gluten-free and lactose-free products. As well, we will be introducing locally supplied organic meats, cheeses and a variety of dried organic goods. It’s going to be a wonderful addition to the store.” These new services are a nice complement to the store’s other offerings, including a full-service postal outlet, general

merchandise, premium vitamins, as well as natural and organic skin care products. As a proud, community-based business, the Westboro Village Pharmasave chooses to sponsor many small grass-roots organizations and initiatives that improve the lives of those in and around Kitchissippi every day. In addition, Mark is frequently invited to speak on topics relating to health and wellness for local community groups. He and his team conduct fall risk assessments for seniors and frequently provide home visits. “We have a conscious desire to step down from the counter and engage with each and every patient to help them take charge of their health,” explains Mark. “I know everyone on the team shares in my view that it feels wonderful to be able to have this kind of positive impact. I often ask people if they know their pharmacist by name – everyone should.”
