First ly, Lewknor Parish Council has planted a beautiful Cherr y tree on t he corner of Sa lt Lane. A long-lasting reminder of t he momentous occasion and par t of ‘The Queen’s Green Canopy ’ initiative. The tree has been marked wit h a fabulous plaque as a reminder of exact ly what it means so t hat it may be long remembered in t he future. As with many other communities up and down the country we also celebrated with a wonderful Tea Party by the ‘God Cake’. The weather was wonderful, and the generosity of our community was incredible. Tables laden with cakes and sandwiches, scones and sausage rolls, tea, coffee and even a cheeky Pimm’s or two for those with not far to walk home. Bunting was hung around the God cake, music played and people from all around Postcombe and their families shared tea and stories, jokes and anecdotes – it was an enormous pleasure to see so many people coming together, thank you to everyone who came and contributed in any and every way.

ince the last Grapevine we have read Piranesi by Susanna Mary Clarke (2020, 272 pages), The Improbability of Love by Hannah Rothschild (2015, 512 pages), I Give it a Year by Helen Whitaker (2021,384 pages) and The Children Act by Ian McEwan (2014, 224 pages).

The Improbability of Love by Hannah Rothschild was a very different book. It was a Finalist for the Bailey’s Women’s Prize. The cover of the edition that we read really let the book down. It was a lurid pink with several empty gilt frames on it. Two of the frames contained silhouettes of a man and a woman. This cover suggested some sort of Clarke’s first novel was Jonathan Strange and light weight romantic rubbish but the cover Mr Norrell which weighed in at 1000 pages was very wrong. and took 10 years to write. She throws him out and installs her father in the house to help with the children. Unfortunately her father stars to show the beginnings of Alzheimer’s. Do Iris and Adam get back together? Some of us enjoyed this book and some found that it didn’t hold the attention. The Children Act has been made into a film with Emma Thompson playing Fiona Maye. Fiona is a High Court Judge specialising in Family Law. She is respected by her peers but her involvement in her career has caused her husband to consider having an affair with a younger colleague. He doesn’t want to separate and asks if she is prepared to tolerate the situation. She is furious and tells him that this is the end of their marriage. He leaves the flat. She is asked to rule on the case of a young Jehovah’s Witness who is refusing a life saving blood transfusion. Her decision and what effect it has on the lives of those involved is the basis of the book.
