SURVIvAL TIPS for GRAND VALLEY STUDENTS No “what you need for college” list could be sufficient without a little upperclassman insight. As a first-year student, back-to-school supplies include extra long sheets and shower shoes, but lack some of the most basic elements for survival away from home. Much of this survival knowledge is gained through experience, but some of these experiences may leave the unprepared student worse for wear. Fact: If you do not live in West Michigan or in the Upper Peninsula, you have never truly experienced winter. Insight: Bring snow boots, a winter coat with a thick lining, multiple pairs of gloves and under armor. Long underwear may seem an extreme measure, but when snow drifts pass your knees, the windchill drops below zero degrees and Grand Valley State University remains open, that second skin is your best friend. Fact: It rains — a lot. Insight: Invest in a pair of rain boots. When it rains, it pours and pools on the sidewalks in deceptively deep puddles. West Michigan receives about 40 inches of rainfall each year making for a cold, wet walk to and from class. An average pair of galoshes, found at stores such as Meijer and Target, is about $20 and well worth the expense. Just as any job has certain tricks of the trade, so too does college. Many more ins and outs concerning GVSU and its surrounding community can be found in this Survival Guide.

Fact: West Michigan’s wind energy economy is booming. Insight: Purchase a sturdy umbrella and windbreaker to battle campus gusts. Built on the edge of a series of ravines, GVSU’s campus buildings are unnatural barriers to an otherwise flat landscape. As this wind whips around GVSU buildings, the unprepared student will take the brunt of the force and arrive to class ravaged and windblown.

Fact: Full-time students can get free sports tickets. Insight: All sports tickets are free for students with a valid student ID. Tickets can be picked up at the Fieldhouse or at the 20/20 desk in the Kirkhof Center prior to the game. Football tickets often run out quickly, so get tickets early to ensure a seat in the stands. Here at GVSU we “row” each time a touchdown is scored. The cheerleaders will direct the count, but be prepared to take a seat and row 30 or more strokes for each game.

Fact: Wheels help you cross campus faster, but larceny is the No. 1 crime on campus. Insight: Bikes and roller blades can cut in half the time for a cross-campus trek, but if your transportation is stolen, it is back to walking. Upon arrival, register your bike with the Department of Public Safety and buy a sturdy lock. Rest assured not all unlocked bikes are stolen ... some are thrown into the ravines by persons unknown.

Fact: Professors are not off the clock after class ends. Insight: Professors are available long after class has let out by means of their office hours. For extra explanation, personal issues or friendly conversation, professors set aside several hours each week for students to visit with them one-on-one.

MONEY MATTERS

Managing personal finances It is a fact of life that college students have limited financial resources. The cost of tuition, textbooks, rent, groceries and a social life each take their toll on students’ bank accounts. However, there are alternatives to bankruptcy. Many banks in the area offer loans specifically geared toward students and Grand Valley State University’s Financial Aid Office offers emergency loans when time is of the essence. Before applying for a loan, students should research their options online or by talking with a Financial Aid counselor. Visit http://www.gvsu.edu/financialaid/ for more information.
