SURVIVAL TIPS

Editors’ insights

E v e r y o n e complains about Allendale and the surrounding area being dull. While that is particularly true, we’re minutes away from Lake Michigan and a beautiful coast. If the outdoors isn’t exactly your cup of tea, we’re also minutes away from a city with a badass fledgling arts scene. There are countless prominent and underground gallery shows, live bands, a couple of dope record shops and the Wealthy Theater is always showing great films, from cult classics to obscure indies and foreign films. The conservative stereotype of West Michigan acts like a veil to the rooted network of creative, open-minded and often forward-thinking nature of the people in Grand Rapids. At its core Grand Rapids is a more diverse metropolis than people perceive it to be. As Grand Valley students, we have responsibility to bring a youthful mentality to the city, which in turn will provide the necessary involvement to see things created in our interests. Elijah Brumback GVL A&E Editor

What really made an impression in my choice to attend Grand Valley was the high-school-sized class sizes. Make sure you really take the opportunity to get to know your professors; they are not only a fountain of information and insight but also a great resource for recommendation letters. It’s not hard at all to cultivate a professional relationship with your professor when there are only 30 people in class, but make sure you do it! A good way to start is by visiting office hours, even with a made-up question about the homework if you don’t have anything else to start a conversation with. Haley Otman GVL Laker Life Editor Get connected! Communities such as InterVarsity, CRU, Campus Ministries or His House are great places to find lifelong friends who will help you to adjust to the new responsibilities

of school and living alone for the first time. James Brien GVL Assistant Photo Editor I’d say to not be afraid to get involved. It sounds cliche, but the more time you spend getting involved in the school and the activities, the more people you know, and then you have more fun overall. It’s makes everything feel more worthwhile, and keeps things less monotonous. Anya Zentmeyer GVL Assistant News Editor Attend as many GVSU sporting events as you can — not just football games. The games are all free for students and they are great ways to increase school spirit and to meet new people. I met a lot of my good friends at football games during my freshman year, and I wish I had gone to other sporting events as well. At the very least, they are free entertainment. Cody Eding GVL Sports Editor Don’t procrastinate! That five-page paper that you were just assigned is going to take the same amount of time to finish the day after class as it would the day before it is due. The only difference is how well it is done when you turn it in (that is, if you ever turn it in). Get it out of the way sooner rather than later. Emanuel Johnson GVL Managing Editor

Grand Valley Lanthorn E m b r a c e change, and don’t be afraid to try new things. GVSU and the surrounding community offer countless different opportunities that you may not have in post-college life, so make the most of them. Don’t limit yourself to your high school mentality; college is a chance to redefine yourself. Join a club, participate in a random campus activity, sign up for a class just because it sounds interesting and hang out with people you wouldn’t normally expect to be friends with. Get outside your comfort zone and make an effort to actively experience everything GVSU has to offer. Lauren Fitch GVL Editor in Chief Always make it to class. Showing up for class is the easiest way to get better grades. Eric Coulter GVL Photo Editor

Know the mark of a freshman: don’t wear your lanyard around your neck. Now, I know I’ve caught about 40 of you guilty as you read this. Also, invest in a good, heavy umbrella. This is Western Michigan wind after all. Mostly, however, the important things are to find somewhere you belong- don’t become isolated within the dorms. Definitely go all in for an organization or cause; it can change your college experience. Alana Holland GVL Layout Editor

Professor advice

To thine own self be true — but don’t assume you come to college as a completely finished product. With any luck, on Graduation Day you’ll be a very different person in some ways, and a real success in the intervening years depends on your being Antczak open to finding new parts of your authentic self in places you never guessed it existed: in Plato thinking your thoughts better than you have, 2,400 years before you were around to think them; in Mozart or Mother Nature giving you ideas about symmetry and beauty you didn’t have the capacity to appreciate until they helped you discover it. To that better self be true — and pursue it fearlessly. Frederick Antczak Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Important Services Course Reserves A tool used by GVSU professors to get specific material out to their students. When a professor puts a document on course reserve for a given class, a student may access a physical copy by visiting the library’s reference desk or a computer copy by clicking the Course Reserve link on the library’s Web site, www.gvsu.edu/library/. Document Delivery A service that allows GVSU students to access articles and documents that are not readily available at their local library. GVSU can deliver any university-owned documents to the students desktop. Students may access the service at the GVSU library Web site.

GVL / Eric Coulter

Zumberge Library on the Allendale Campus is only half of GVSU’s library resources. The Steelcase Library serves students on the Pew Campus.

RefWorks A valuable tool that assists students in building their reference pages or bibliographies. The program functions in several formats, including MLA, APA and Chicago style. Students may access the program by clicking More Services under the Services tab on the library’s Web site. Contact a GVSU library: Web site: www.gvsu.edu/library Phone: 616-331-3500 E-mail: refdesk@gvsu.edu Text: 265010 (type “gvuslibraries:” followed by message) AIM and Yahoo IM: gvsulibraries Information also available on Facebook

New Library Plans Groundbraking for the Mary Idema Pew Library and Information Commons is set for Sept. 21. The 140,000 square-foot new library will be adjacent to the Kirkhof Center. The estimated cost is $70 million and should be completed by 2013.

GVL / Eric Coulter Courtesy Graphic / GVSU

An architect depicts the preliminary plans for the Mary Idema Pew Library. GVSU voted in February 2010 to go ahead with the $70 million project. The Pew Library will hold about 150,000 books, have room for 600,000 books in an automated retrieval system and contain 30 rooms for small group meetings. Once the new library is complete, Zumberge Library will be renovated for other uses such as classrooms.

The four floors of Zumberge Library offer about 60 computers and four printing stations. The reference desk is available to answer students’ questions and help them locate books. A conference area on the first floor is also a good option for group projects and research.
