Independence Day: Happy Birthday America Story by

Gerald Morgenstern Grafenwoehr. ”happy birthday america!“ was the motto on July 4th at main post Grafenwoehr. The us army had issued an invitation and German and american guests celebrated the independence of the united states, which was declared in 1776, together on the parade field below the water tower. Garrison commander col. James e. saenz welcomed many ViP guests on independence Day. Many visitors came in through Gate 1 to celebrate with the Americans, following a short stroll around the WaterTower. The soldiers and families had already taken control of the parade field, which is usually used for military events, in the afternoon and turned it into a large picnic area. National pride and patriotism inspired by America’s independence was not only displayed by the huge Star-Spangled-Banner and German national flag waving on the flag poles in front of JMTC headquarters but also by the many small flags, shirts and hats featuring the Stars and Stripes. Country singer Kayleigh Leith from Pennsylvania put a sense of home on the stage in the tent with her New Country-songs. Together with her Dutch violinist, she walked around the parade field with her guitar and entertained the visitors. Meanwhile a DJ had taken control of the music in the tent. Face painting for kids and the magic of the Sorcerer from Hexenberg as well as many jumping castles and play areas provided entertainment for the youngest fest guests. Long lines formed in front of the booths where hamburgers, hot dogs, t-bone steaks, beverages and Budweiser beer were sold.

Charlie Hacker provided a contrast program to the American light beer. Together with Mayor Helmuth Wächter, he pulled a handcart with a fresh keg of Kulmbach beer into the VIP area and presented Col. James E. Saenz, Col. Bryan L. Rudacille and Command Sergeants Major William Berrios and Dennis Zavodsky with their “OZapft-is“-keg tapping certificates which they had earned in May. The VIP visitors enjoyed the freshly drafted Bavarian beer with their hamburgers and hot dogs very much. Together, they proposed a toast to the Independence Day and to the German-American friendship. Among the guests were the mayors of the towns bordering the training area such as Hans-Martin Schertl from Vilseck and Lord Mayor Kurt Seggewiß from Weiden, County Commissioner Richard Reisinger from Amberg and Police President Rudolf Kraus from Regensburg, the new local German

Army commander, Lt. Col. Hans Gehrlein as well as many other military representatives from the various US units. The highlight, eagerly awaited by all, was the brilliant fireworks display. Loud fire crackers, like you normally only hear co-

ming from the ranges, opened the light show. The pyrotechnical art could not only be seen and heard on the parade field but also from around the entire town. It was accompanied by a loud rendition of “Proud to be an American“, put on by the DJ.

German Army: Howitzer hovers in the sky Story by

Gerald Morgenstern Grafenwöhr/Vilseck. “sling load“– is the term for military cargo transported externally. and that was the purpose of a joint exercise between the artillery soldiers of the 2d us cavalry regiment and the soldiers of the German army’s helicopter transport regiment 25.with their transport helicopter ch 53, they transferred american artillery M 777 a 2 howitzers and soldiers to an artillery firing position for a live fire exercise inside Grafenwoehr training area. exciting scenario The joint exercise scenario took place at an exercise site near the former village of Hopfenohe and at firing position 253 near Rose Barracks. Lt. Col. Anthony Lugo is the commander of the fires squadron, the artillery component of the 2d US Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck. He expected lasting benefits from the joint exercise. Sling load exercises and the following live fire are part of the qualification training of his soldiers. His unit is equipped with 18 M 777 A2 howitzers, also known as the Triple Seven. “A security team of 30 soldiers, followed by the six gunners of the firing unit and the Triple Seven as a sling load will be transferred with the German Army’s helicopter CH 53, “ explained the public affairs officer of the regiment, Maj. Robert Hoover. The helicopter arrived with some delay from the army airfield in Laupheim near Ulm, when it came in atop the ruins of Hopfenohe church. Lt. Col. Manfed Herbst, the commander of the helicopter, describes the Sikorsky CH 53 as “old but dependable‘. The German Army has used this medium-sized transport helicopter for more than 40 years. Several aircraft are currently deployed abroad. Currently, the aircraft is bring extensively modernized. 66 aircraft will remain in the German Army’s inventory for several decades. However, the helicopter will be reassigned from Army to the Air Force. Only the American Chinook CH 47 6

helicopter with its two large rotor blades and the CH 53 are currently able to transport heavy loads such as the ones transported during the training at Grafenwoehr. Pilot, crew and loadmaster give the American soldiers a short briefing, then the action begins. While the rotor blades are turning, the 30 soldiers of the security team board the helicopter. . stormy wind and noise On the second flight, the gunners

board the aircraft and the howitzer is attached as the sling load. The tenton helicopter rattles noisily over the loading crew. They push against the stormy wind and the pressure of the rotor blades and ignore the noise to safely attach the Triple Seven to the hook. Everything goes like clockwork. The training exercise is completed quickly and without any problems. The crew and the five-ton sling load fly away in the direction of the firing position where the ammunition crew, the propellant and the ammunition are already waiting.

Quickly ready to fire After putting down and unpacking the howitzer, the weapons system is quickly moved into position. A short test of the electronics and the leveling system follows before the 155 mm artillery missile is fired dead on target into the impact area, located six kilometers away. In the meantime, the helicopter had delivered two additional howitzers and their crews. Afterwards, during the live fire, the helicopter flies to Grafenwoehr Army Airfield to refuel.

Ray of Hope: Music was their first love Story by

susanne williams the band “ray of hope” is an incredibly good group of ten young singers and musicians that was founded in 2004. basically they all just wanted to keep on singing after they got out of high school in eschenbach where they had been part of the school choir. A band that fascinates their audience from the first to the last moment of every concert. so, they met every weekend to play music and sing together. After a while they started to sing in churches for weddings. Of course they were familiar with church songs and hymns just like they could play musical songs and rock and pop. Things got more and more professional and a few years later they started to give annual Christmas and summer concerts where they fascinated crowds of at least 300 people.

LL.M. | Rechtsanwältin | German Lawyer web

They can play anything from German pop songs to amazing classics like Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World” or John Miles’ “Music was my first Love”. They really rock the stage when they perform hits like the Beatles’ “Here comes the Sun” or Adele’s “Someone like You”. No wonder the audience wants more after each concert. And since the concert in Grafenwoehr at the “Kastenhaus” was such a great success in June Ray of Hope is going to play another concert like that in October in Kemnath at the Foyer of the Mehrzweckhalle. For more information check out their homepage on www. rayofhope-band.de or find them on facebook under “Ray of Hope.” You could also hear and see them on Youtube if you type in “RayOfHopeBand”, Check them out: You will love what you hear!

K-9: Meet a real four-legged hero Story by

susanne williams

it was a nice sunny day at the Vfw home in Grafenwoehr when i met one of the most impressive and adorable personalities ever. They had told me that their mascot and his owner would come to visit the Vfw members that day and i expected a normal dog just like any other i have met before. but man, i was so wrong!

When I entered the back yard of the VFW home I saw him lying right beside his owner’s feet: A beautiful dark German Shepard that had aged from everything he had gone through but that still was willing to do his job and to protect his owner no matter what. I had never met a retired military dog before and the aura that surrounded him was so majestic. It is hard to describe this dog. Of course, for me as an absolute dog lover it is clear that I adore each and every dog. But this one is so special. He was wearing his harness and his owner told me that they put it on every morning because it belongs to the dog’s daily routine. With the harness on he would go on patrol in the yard before breakfast. “You know,” his owner said, “that’s what he has been doing all his life.” Yes, he was trained to patrol, to obey and to defend himself and his handlers. He had learned not to doubt the commands he got. And why do dogs things like that? Not because they believe in fighting. Simply because they truly and without conditions love their owners and handlers.

reward? Playing with his handler for a few minutes, with the person he would give his life for because he loves him so much. And then it was their time to go to war together, two companions that would stick together no matter what might happen to them. But one day the dog got kidnapped together with to other dogs that did not make it. He was probably kept under horrible conditions for several days before he was able to free himself and drag himself back to his army base badly injured because his back was broken twice and blood in his face from the kidnapper he had killed before he could escape. So, the poor animal was flown back to Grafenwoehr to get surgery at the animal clinic but it was obvious that he was not able to work again as a military dog. Fortunately the Army has a program that makes it possible for such dogs to be adopted and retire in a cozy home with loving owners just like they deserve it. The post commander’s wife had heard of this dog and did her best to find someone who could take care of this dog with his fractured back and his wounded soul. She found someone who has had a dog

with a broken back before and who was willing to give this four legged hero a loving home. This person had everything the dog needed: an incredibly big heart, patience and faith, a nice home where the dog could recover and a big yard where he could go on patrols and do what he had always been doing. It took the dog a while but he has finally recovered and is now even able to jump into the trunk of his owner’s car again.

Photo: Susanne Williams

He will always be a soldier though just like his human colleagues and when he hears a helicopter he looks up and wonders if they are coming to get him for work. He has learned to kill if it was necessary but as I knelt down to talk to him and show him how much respect I felt for him and his fellow military dogs he came over and kissed my nose. What a magic moment.

As every military working dog this one was chosen from a European kennel and taken to the USA as a puppy to be trained and to learn that he can trust his handlers. He learned to protect his handler and his base, to jump out of helicopters and to sniff bombs. And what was his 18

Fisherfest – Competition for the Ducks Sow trough race on the city pond opened the 51st Fisherfest of the fishing club – Many Americans competed – Proclamation of the Fisher king on Sunday Story by

nig.Other competitors were the “Ami Boys“ Timy Leiato and Chris Lamp, “The Hütten Kirwa Boys”Mikey Kolek and Thomas Rahn,“Silver Surfer“ Benjamin König and Wolfgang Flor, “Pink Rabbits“ Oliver Müller and René Wächter, “Team Prost“ Command Sgt. Major William Berrios and Capt. Thomas Terpening, “The Glorious 2“ Stefan Weiß and Wilbert Kraus, and “Midgets with Paddles“ Robert Price and Anthony Bair.

On Sunday, the fisher king and trophy winners were presented with their awards. Apart from the fest’s patrons, Mayor Helmuth Wächter and Deputy Garrison Commander Kathy Aydt, many VIP guests from Grafenwöhr and the training area had come. The club was prepared for inclement weather and had put up a large fest tent so the guests could enjoy the fest despite the rain. This year’s fisher queen is Sabi-

ne Rahn. Her carp, caught in the Spindelweiher pond near Hütten weighed 5,780 grams. She received the historic fisher king chain from patron Kathy Aydt and you could see how proud she was of her accomplishments.Once again this year, Dominik Stepka won the title youth fisher king. His carp weighed 3,760 grams. He won the title for the third time in a row, defending his titles from 2010 and 2011.

renate Gradl Grafenwoehr. The duck family was quite surprised when they all of a sudden saw many twolegged individuals in sow trough on the city pond on saturday. but they generously left their usual terrain and followed the spectacular event from the sidelines. after all, one does not get to see a sow trough race every day. The opening event of the 51st fisherfest on saturday had been well-organized again by the fishing club. Before announcer Reinhold Müller started and also provided some historic details, fishing club chairman Herbert Benkhardt had welcomed its guests in the afternoon and thanked all helpers. “Before the fishing club held its fest at the city pond, it was held at the Grafenwoehr pool, FishGradl and the Opel-Pond,” said Müller. Ten teams with very imaginative names competed. But that wasn’t enough: Oliver Müller and René Wächter appeared in rabbit costumes. After exciting fights, cheered on by the spectators, it turned into a wet and funny event for all. Many a competitor took a bath in the city pond. Although mostly involuntary, it turned into a fun experience due to the tropic temperatures. Winners in only 1.01 minutes were Markus Stümpfl and Maximilian Dippl who should definitely change their team name. They had called themselves “Won’t an can’t do it.“ But that may have just been a tactical ploy. Second was the “German-AmericanFriendship“ team with Col. Bryan Rudacille and Udo Greim.Third were “The Lions“ Michael and Patrik Köwww.grafenwoehr-news.com
