Roots Magazine - Grace 2021-2022

Page 1

Letter from the Editor Marissa Drake Hello! I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to be the Roots Magazine Editor-in-Chief this year! I am so proud of the wonderful work my team did to fulfill the creative vision I had for the magazine! I am a second year student majoring in Graphic Design with a minor in Psychology. I come from the Chicago area. My hobbies include going to the gym and watching any movie that involves aliens! It was important to me that the magazine was high quality and felt like a professional piece while also showcasing the fun, illustrative and artistic abilities of my designers. This creative vision could be a metaphor for the college experience. On one hand, you are here to get a degree and professional skills so you can join the workforce after graduation. On the other hand, college is also a time to make lifelong friends, have fun, and grow as a person. Fun Fact: On pages introducing each new section of the magazine, you’ll see lots of fun doodles. These doodles were drawn on the Roots table by students at the Involvement Trail!

“Take advantage of all the cool things you get to do, even if it makes you nervous. Just say yes to things, put yourself out there, and make the most of everything you are given. I know I didn’t do that for a long time, and I just started doing it. This year has been one of the best years of my life because I have been putting myself out there more. Even though it’s tiring sometimes, it’s so worth it.”

Lee Bowl an de h v r o

“I consider myself a jack of all trades. I do a lot of different things. I like to play music, I’m on the Grace College guitar ensemble, and I play piano and french horn. In highschool I did a lot of ‘mountain biking’ through the Winona Lake trails, and I also played soccer.”

“A few of my childhood friends and I used to play this really absurd game called ‘food for the fats’ where we pretended to make food for some demanding gluttonous customers at a restaurant. They would apparently yell at us as we made them pretend food out of dirt and leaves and stuff. It was extremely stressfull, and I am traumatized to this day.”

“My mom and I used to go on these dates when I was in 4th grade. We would use this book called “8 Great Dates for Moms and Daughters.” The book had different date ideas, like going to a tea room or going to an art museum or thrift shopping. And on the way, we would listen to a CD that related the date with some sort of biblical lesson. It was a deep bonding experience for my mom and I, and it created a trust between us in middle school and high school. I knew I could always talk to her and tell her what was going on in my life.”

“Something I’ve learned and relearned and will probably keep learning it, hopefully less and less as I mature and grow in wisdom, is that I can’t root my joy in my circumstances. My plans that I make, even the best laid plans, don’t always work out, and if all you’re holding onto is your plans and they fall apart, you’re going to fall with them. The only unchanging steadfast hope we have is Christ.”

“I’m a big believer in authenticity. Something I have learned is that you are doing God a disservice if you put a mask on around people. If you are authentic, you are showing people the true beauty that God has created you to be and you can relate to people better. If you are authentic around people, they feel more comfortable being authentic around you, and those relationships become much deeper and genuine.”

Other times we would play runaway orphans in our basement and take turns being the runaways and the bad guy. We would use jump ropes and tie each other up when we would get caught. Our imaginations could carry us anywhere and has left me with years of sweet memories.” y Trentadu dd e u B

Trenta e Qi du p o e H “My grandparents used to live in Chicago, and when we went over there, the rule was that I couldn’t do anything until after 7AM because I would be so excited to be in my grandparents house I would wake up way too early. I would get up at 5AM, and tiptoe out to the bathroom which had a clock in it. As soon as It would hit 7AM, I would go into my grandparents’ room, and I would curl up in the bed with my grandma (because my grandpa would be up already), and we would talk and have grandmagrandaughter bonding time at 7 in the morning. I would always enjoy the feeling of being with my grandma and the feeling of visiting her house.”

Back in 5 A bit about what we do:

What I was most excited about:

We’re a campus-based comedy improv team striving to bring free, God-honoring entertainment to Grace students.

“Bailey and I were very excited to build a team from the ground up this year. Bailey and I have been on this team together for three years now, so we were nervous to kind of make a new little family. But I can’t speak highly enough of the team we put together this year. They are so dedicated, humble, and creative. I’ve had so much fun with them this year, and I’m excited that almost all of them will be sticking around for next year as well.” -Sadie Roberts

“I love Back in Five because in life there is plenty of serious to go around. What we need is a little bit of nonsense. Amen? Amen. I also love my team and have loved laughing with them into the wee hours of the night.” -Haylie “Back in Five to me means being able to be myself. I get to express who I am in a weird and fun way. I just love everyone on the team for accepting me for me.” -Andrew “Back in Five to me is a way I can try to help people. The reason I auditioned is because I saw people having a hard time after Covid, so I hoped I could somehow help in making people laugh and forget about their troubles for an hour.” -Malachi “Back in Five has been a huge part of my Grace experience. The friends I’ve made, memories I’ve created, and laughs I’ve had will stick with me for years to come. I love being able to make this campus happy, even if it’s only for an hour once a month.” -Sadie

Student Affinity Groups

Grace has several fantastic student groups that allow students to take advantage of opportunities yearround to learn about other cultures, from weekly meetings to theme months and special activities.

From left to right: • Katy Boeckers, ASH lead • Itsel Flores-Uribe, EL lead • Madeline Miller, CDI Coordinator • Cokiesha BaileyRobinson, Associate Dean of Student Diversity and Inclusion • DaZhané Jones, BSA lead (Not pictured: Carissa Butler, NASO lead)

Native American Student Association As of this year, NASO is the newest addition to the Council of Diversity and Inclusion. NASO stands for the Native American Student Organization. It is a place where all students are welcome to learn and appreciate Native American culture, traditions and customs. Our goal is to help enhance cultural awareness, build meaningful connections between students, and praise God for his wonderful blessings. Looking forward to next year, we are in the process of planning some very exciting events, so be on the lookout for those! For further information, email Carissa Butler at butlerc@grace.edu.

21

Asian Student Heritage Asian Student Heritage aims to offer a place for Asian students to come together and connect. We host events open to the campus and people of all ethnicities to celebrate Asian culture and heritage. Whether you are an exchange student looking for community or you simply love ramen and sushi, ASH welcomes you!

Esperanza Latina Esperanza Latina is a Latinx club that exists to help our campus be aware of the diversity that is on our campus along with making Latinx students on campus and/or visiting campus welcome here at Grace. Esperanza Latina is a group that focuses on the Hispanic/Latinx culture! We do events like Festival de Culturas, Noche de Loteria, and Reuniones Familiaries. We have deep conversations about any topic or sometimes just watch a movie together. This group exists to help our Latinx community be more comfortable at Grace College. Everyone is welcome to be involved in our activities and events.

Black Student Association BSA is a place that allows Black and African students on campus to have a group of peers that gives them support so that they can be rooted in who they are and their heritage. It is also a place where many can come together and hear each other so that they can work to be together as one. In BSA we use every day as a time to connect and grow not only as an organization but also a campus. We stand in love, community, togetherness, and respect.

Sophomore Mugging

Sophomore Mugging is an annual event hosted by

Student Senate to welcome Grace’s sophomores back to campus in the fall, as well as providing an opportunity to meet their classmates and reunite with their friends. This year’s Sophomore Mugging was held at Light Rail Cafe and Roaster, just a short walk down the hill to The Village. Students then received a free beverage of their choice, courtesy of Senate, served in this year’s custom mug commemorating the class.

“Through the Decades” Homecoming Week 2021 - “Through the Decades” - aimed to be a blast from the past! From 50’s/60’s Skate Night to 70’s-themed RedZone soccer games, an 80’s themed bonfire hangout to the 90’s-themed Beanie Bowl championships, there were ample opportunities to step into a different decade. T-Shirt Chapel and food trucks only added to the fun. A week of fun-filled activities, games, and sporting events culminated in a full Saturday that featured the Homecoming parade, the Homecoming banquet, and a variety show. 2021 Homecoming Queen Kennedy Parker and Homecoming King Kyle Smith were also crowned at the banquet. A Student Senate-sponsored dance party ended the night on a high note.

Maia Bowen “Jacob’s work as an ARD has been very helpful. I have seen his impact most in his intentionality during one-on-one time with hall leaders and his time spent planning and teaching growth group lessons so the GGLs are well prepared each week. He is a great friend, and it is always encouraging to spend time with him.” - Ben Close

45

“Averie Rulli, thank you for your dedication to Res Life and your investment in the communities of Beta/Indy dorms. You have sat with so many people in hard spaces and provided the Lord’s comfort during really challenging times. You have provided so many fun, spontaneous, and creative spaces that allowed those you were around to flourish during their time at Grace. You will be deeply missed!” - Tianna Frischmann

Spencer Mason

Jacob Abrahamson

“Maia serves residence life with a tenacious curiosity and limitless enthusiasm! Always ready to talk about crocheting, K-Dramas, BookTok, social justice, and everything in between, Maia’s made us all sharper, kinder, and comforted. Thank you for generously educating, advocating, and serving the Grace community!” - Alicia Meyer

Averie Rulli

Farewell

As this year ends, many of our Residence Life staff will be leaving Grace. We’ve asked a few people that were influenced by these leaders to capture a few meaningful words of their experience. We trust that each of these people have contributed to the Grace culture and a transformative student experience!

“Spencer, I’ve never know someone with your infectious enthusiasm and genuine enjoyment of being around people. You bring people together in a special way and I can’t imagine my years here without you. Love you man.” - Tyler Carrie

Alicia Meyer “Alicia, thank you for everything you have done as an RD. You are gracious, compassionate, patient, and willing to serve those around you. You have empowered me and other students around campus to become leaders who speak truth, offer grace, and lean into our community. You have been a light to our campus and an example of Christ. We are extremely grateful for you and are excited as you move forward in your new position!” - Amanda Minich

Tianna Frischmann “When I first became a student at Grace, Tianna Frischmann was a name I often heard, and I had no idea the impact she would soon make on me. I have been incredibly blessed to have Tianna as my boss these past two years and to have a firsthand look at the ways that she serves this school. Anyone who knows Tianna knows that she encourages others on another level, she meets individuals where they are at, she loves big, she works hard, and she brings fun to every environment. Tianna, thank you for the way that you have led others and for making me better. Thank you for being an advocate for students and pushing for change to make Grace the best it can be for students for the past 7 years. Grace is forever better because of you!” - Emma Hood

Emily Brenneman “Emily Caley joined the ResLife team at Grace in the fall of 2007 after graduating from Huntington University where she served as both RA and ARD. A year later, she became a Brenneman, and Kyle joined her in the Indiana Hall apartment. Emily served six years in Indiana Hall - four years as a resident director and two years as senior resident director. For the next three years, Emily was special projects coordinator in student affairs and then became director of residence life in 2016. In each of these roles, God has used Emily to impact and educate students and her teammates. She is known for her gifts of discernment and encouragement. I have personally learned much from Emily - particularly how to love people the way Jesus does. Today, after 15 years of service to Grace College in student affairs, Emily is responding to God’s call to something else. I am incredibly grateful for her contributions to Grace and Grace students. She doesn’t know exactly what is next for her professionally, but I have no doubt she will continue to lead and love those around her with excellence and wisdom. Thank you, Emily, for your investment in Grace. It has been a joy to serve Christ alongside you.” - Aaron Crabtree

Dr. Katip

Grace College President 2013 2021

A few unique traits about Dr. Katip for which he will be remembered: • Being horrible at names but having an amazing memory for details • Cracking up over the use of his own bitmoji • One symptom of his “cup overflowing” mentality, an abundant use of exclamation points • “Phenomenal, just phenomenal” • “Thank you big time” • “Wow, wow, wow” • “For the love of Pete” while palm slapping his forehead

47

Did you know? • The Katips are huge Steelers Fans!!! • Around Christmastime, they have a decorated tree in each room!!! • There is a whole room in their house dedicated to vintage wedding dresses!!! • Their favorite “take-out” is the Taco Truck!!! • Dr. Katip’s office included 20+ wall clocks!!!

“I had the pleasure and honor of serving in the Office of the President for five years alongside Dr. Katip. During that time, I was privileged to a front row seat of outstanding leadership. The office was fast-paced and full of energy. I remain amazed at how full we could run his schedule, switching from topic to topic, and yet he remained completely open to interruptions and was gracious. People are very important to him and it showed in every interaction. It did not matter what was going on, Dr. Katip took the time to acknowledge others and encourage them. Dr. Katip has the unique ability to connect with anyone from anywhere, making them feel heard and valued. His enthusiasm is contagious!!! I will be forever thankful to God for bringing my work path alongside Dr. Katip. It was a comfort to know I had his support, encouragement, and trust as I took steps of faith, both professionally and personally. Dr. Katip, thank you for everything you taught me. I am better because of your investment in me and my time under your leadership!” - Sarah Prater, Executive Assistant to the President “Every college student needs a Dr. Katip, a grandpa-like figure that you hold the upmost respect for, who listens, loves you, and wants what’s best for you, while still being able to tell you the hard truth when needed. Dr. Katip is a true Christ-like servant leader. He has the respect of the students as he makes time to listen to them while leading Grace straight towards Christ. In the conversations I was blessed to have with him, his faith is evident and strong. Students’ lives have been changed because of the service of Dr. and Mrs. Katip.” - Kiersten Martin, ‘21-22 Student Body President “I have personally witnessed Dr. Katip’s willingness to connect with our Latinx students, asking relevant questions in order to help them navigate the challenges of college life. His deep appreciation of cultural diversity is evident not only by implementing institutional policies to support Latino students’ recruitment and retention, but also through his attendance to countless events to celebrate together the rich contribution of Latinos to the American experience. Dr. Katip empowers leaders, inspiring them to imitate our Lord’s command of loving others as themselves. In times where it seems difficult to find answers to challenges, his firm vision for the future provided the energy needed to keep pressing on.” - Benjamin Navarro “Bill and Debbie, When I think of your ministry, I think of the words INVESTMENT and EMPOWERMENT. Separate and together, you seek to invest in the lives of others and in the Kingdom work in our community. As a foster parent in Kosciusko County, I have personally felt your support as you rallied around the kiddos in my home - even offering to babysit! Would you believe that I took a screenshot of that message from Dr. Katip? I did because I wanted to remember his leadership and remember the type of leader I want to be! Professionally, Dr. Katip, you have empowered me to embrace new challenges, facilitate conversations, and be confident in my abilities. You have given voice to many that were voiceless. You have given ears to those that needed to be heard. We are so grateful! We are also grateful for the times you’ve shown up to shop til’ you drop at Supermarket Sweep, called out numbers at Bingo, been soaked in a dunk tank, and hosted students to your home. Thank you for the mark you’ve made on our campus culture; I see a little more Jesus here because of the ways you have stewarded your role as president!” - Laurie Owen

New Faces

We’ve had some new faculty join us at Grace the past few years!

Art Department instructor Professor Aaron Winey has been teaching at Grace for approximately three years now, though his time at Grace is significantly more. Where did his Grace journey begin? “I came to Grace in 2000 and studied graphic design,” and, after working full-time for several years at DePuy, “ended up graduating in 2010 with a Business Administration degree through the GOAL program.” “I bounced around majors for a while” - much like the story of many a college student! - “but I don’t think it was ever a question whether I was getting into design or not. It was an interesting couple of years, but I figured it out.” While working at DePuy, Professor Winey recalls that he initially “came back as a traditional student, [taking] art classes right over in [Mount Memorial] 100” before switching to the GOAL program, which allowed adult students to complete their undergrad degree in a year and a half. The business degree soon came to good use, as he started his own design studio, Blue Note Design, in the Village at Winona. “Running the studio - running Blue Note - was the most interesting. The variety of clients, owning successes and failures… I had a lot of fun doing that.” From industry jobs to teaching, “Most of the job transitions I took, I wasn’t looking for, even starting the studio… One thing I’ve learned, you can have a plan and that’s good, but it’s more important to pay attention” and be open to new opportunities. “Having a plan is one thing, but God’s gonna bring different things into your life; some of them may make sense, some of them may be planned, but the best ones in my experience are more surprises, and teaching was very much that.”

Dr. Kevin Voogt is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education and is new to Grace this year. Dr. Voogt studied mathematics with an emphasis on secondary education at Calvin University, and this past summer finished his Ph.D. program in mathematics education from Michigan State. Prior to coming to Grace, he worked in secondary education as a high school math teacher. “When I left Calvin, I felt my mission was to be a Christian teacher in a public school.” After graduating from Calvin, he taught in public schools in several states: “New Mexico, and then Florida for my first year… and then I went to Wisconsin after that, passed through Chicago [Illinois] on my way to Texas, and I was in Texas for the last 6 years.” After so many places, how did Dr. Voogt end up at Grace? “That’s God, right there. I had said, ‘I won’t take a job at a small Christian school, and I won’t work in Indiana or Illinois’... we were praying about what to do, and we felt like the whole time God was saying to go here [Grace]. So we went to a small Christian college in Indiana!” Dr. Voogt may be new to Grace, but he is all in on the ways of Grace. “I think here… they live out the name of the college; they have grace for people, they want people here regardless of their backgrounds. I think that’s really living as Christ did and I really love that about this place.” “There’s a light here, and they want that light to go out into the world, and it’s not just contained in a bubble… We want to send people into public schools and other jobs to be a light in the darkness.”

The Coolens

Dr. Kevin Voogt

New to Grace this year, Bo and Sam Coolen serve as co-coaches for the softball team. “As the Co-Head Softball Coaches at Grace College, we hope to develop young ladies and prepare them for the real world. We hope to use our platform to strengthen their relationships with Christ and help prepare them for life through the game of softball.” Coach Bo, who is originally from Honolulu, Hawai’i, previously worked as associate head coach at Westcliff University in Irvine, California. Coach Sam, who is originally from Modesto, California, also previously worked at Westcliff University. The Coolens came to Grace because they “wanted to coach together, and felt like this was where we wanted to be.” Coach Bo says, “God has obviously led my wife and I to Grace right now to create a championship culture on and off the field.” Coach Sam agrees: “I hope that when each young lady in our program graduates and moves on in life that they have grown physically, mentally and spiritually during their time here at Grace… I absolutely love what I do and hope to make an impact on many lives throughout my time coaching.” Both are grateful for, engaged in, and encouraged by Grace’s culture: “Not only have the young ladies grown but Sam and myself have also grown tremendously in our short amount of time here,” notes Coach Bo.

Chapel at Grace 73

With the theme of “Follow Me,” chapel at Grace is structured around the Bible passage Matthew 16:24, which says: “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’” Chapel gives students the opportunity to grow a deeper relationship with one another and with God.

Taste of the Word is an event that the Chapel Team hosts each year during Conference on Missions Week to learn about a variety of cultures. It provides students an opportunity to try different foods and drinks from around the world.

get to know the

Grace Cabinet Members

You’ve probably heard of the “Grace Cabinet,” but do you know what it is? Who it is?

What they do? “The Cabinet’s role is to execute on the vision of the institution” and is “responsible to inform, represent and support the President,” according to members Andrew Flamm and Laurie Owen, respectively. Read on to learn a bit more about the Cabinet members and the work that they do in and for Grace!

Laurie Owen has been

at Grace for 20 years, and in her current Cabinet role wants to achieve “learning experiences for students that are inclusive, equitable, engaging, enjoyable and rich in content and faith integration,” ultimately working on “representing [her] two favorite campus groups - students and faculty.” Dr. Owen loves interacting with students: “learning from them in the classroom, traveling with them on Go Encounters, and even laughing with them at Back in 5.” She’s excited whenever she gets to “hear from an alum making a difference in a school, classroom, or community across the globe!”

75

Aaron Crabtree is

someone students see around a lot on campus, as his role in the Cabinet is to “represent the co-curricular, student-centered, and community-focused aspects of Grace” and thereby help “see every student belonging and becoming in community.” Of his role, he says, “It is difficult work, often unseen and underappreciated, but also fulfilling” to him as he believes he’s “living out [his] calling through this position.” His favorite part of his role is learning, both from and with students, and he loves “any opportunity to listen to students’ reflections or to challenge them to think of the ways our Christian faith aligns with the ways we live out our lives.”

Freddy Cardoza serves as “the representative of Grace Seminary and

the School of Ministry Studies to the Cabinet;” as such, he hopes “to faithfully advance the mission of Grace College and Seminary and make it a leading learning community for Christian students and ministers making an impact in culture and society.” “Strategizing to make an impact and for problem solving to make our institution better” is one of his favorite parts of working as part of the Cabinet. Dr. Cardoza has been at Grace since January 2019, and in his time here, he’s found his favorite part of interacting with students to be witnessing “their zeal for God and their commitment to people.”

Andrew Flamm is the

Executive Vice President in the Cabinet, “responsible for enrollment, marketing, and advancement (fundraising and alumni).” As part of fundraising, he gets to see the impact of giving from both sides: “The connection between donors’ generosity and making a student’s experience at Grace better is fun to watch.” Dr. Flamm is grateful for “the people [he] gets to serve with. They love Jesus. They love Grace. They work hard for the benefits of students and our faculty and staff colleagues”, and he is “constantly amazed by our students. [S]eeing the potential of each student and the future impact they will make for Christ is most enjoyable” in his Cabinet role.

Doug Baumgardner

joined the Cabinet in June 2020 and serves in “[overseeing] our finance team, OIT group, and our operations and facilities group here on campus”; in doing so, he hopes to “steward the resources God has provided to us in order to most effectively invest in our students’ and employees’ success.” In student interactions, Baumgardner loves “being able to learn more about their stories, hear their laughter and joy, see their passions engaged that leads to enthusiasm in learning, be encouraged by their successes, hopes and dreams, and see them growing in their faith and knowledge of Jesus.”

Carrie Yocum serves

in the Cabinet as the Vice President of Administration and Compliance as well as Chief of Staff, often working with the president “behind the scenes to assure that many of our administrative activities help students and employees do their best work.” In her approximately 25 years at Grace, Dr. Yocum has strived to equip campus in “working toward learning, living, and worship experiences that help students be successful while at Grace.” One of her proudest moments was in starting the undergrad social work program here: “I was proud of that program and my students and how we prepared and equipped them to help others in all the places people go to for help.”

John Teevan, Grace’s

interim president in Spring 2022, leads and helps set the agenda for the Cabinet with Dr. Yocum, as well as serving by coordinating information and decisions among various departments at Grace. Dr. Teevan was a professor at Grace in the 1970s and now has been again since 2000. He has also made impacts in other roles throughout his professional career, including several years as an educator and director “[s]erving hundreds of prisoners in Indiana State prisons.” This year especially, he appreciates the culture at Grace in that “[a]ll students [he has] met in [his] new role have been engaging and positive.”

Major: Visual Communication Design Minor : Marketing I love to dream, and graphic design is a field of study where I can craft those dreams into something tangible that other can enjoy. I would love to work in product design in the future! A song I paint to is “In Luv With U” by Finn.

My dream is to work at Disney World, but I’m not sure where I’ll end up! One song I really love at the moment is the instrumental Jungle Cruise cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters.” It’s a great car jam!

I love art, design, and media (especially animation), and have enjoyed learning how they all connect with marketing in my classes. A song I’m loving lately is “Firm Foundation” by Maverick City Music!

I’ve always loved drawing ever since I was a kid. Creating is my way of sharing with the world. Though I am not 100% sure what I want to do after graduation, I am interested in making video games. “Light my Love” by Greta Van Fleet is a recent favorite song of mine.

Major: Visual Communication Design Minor : Marketing I get this dopamine rush whenever I create so I feel the happiest whenever I’m designing something. I would love to use my passions to serve the Lord in the future, and VCD is my pathway to doing that right now. I recommend “Send Me a Peach” by The Blasting Company.
