GPWMA CELEBRATES Photos by Inner Circle Photography

MEMORIAL WEEK

One day was not enough, so this past May, the Grosse Pointe War Memorial took a whole week to honor our veterans, military service members and their families with events and special programs. Hundreds of our friends participated in Memorial Week activities on our campus and in the community.

On Tuesday, May 19, we held Our Community Salutes, honoring metro Detroit high school seniors who had recently enlisted in the armed services. At the ceremony held on our back lawn, they took their Oath of Service, administered by Major General Gwendolyn Bingham of TACOM, as their proud families looked on. Troy Schielein, 1st Sgt. USMC (ret) also spoke. Our gala, An Evening of Red, White & Blue, held on May 20, was a tremendous success. Nearly 250 guests attended, enjoying cocktails in the courtyard, a private performance by Becca Stevens, and an elegant, gourmet meal in our lakefront ballroom. The War Memorial presented the inaugural Spirit of the Community Award to Mary and Ron Lamparter and Spirit of Service Award to Troy F. Schielein, 1st Sgt. USMC (Ret). Proceeds from the evening benefit the Patriot Fund, which provides scholarships to veterans and supports high impactful organizations focused on patriotism and veteran causes. Gifts from the fund were presented to four beneficiaries that night. A two-day Veterans Conference was held on May 21-22, seeking input on support needs and showcasing different organizations that offer resources to service members, veterans and their families. Beautiful weather provided the perfect backdrop for our Day of Service on Saturday, May 23. A contingent of War Memorial staff, board members, community partners and family volunteered at Detroit’s John D. Dingell VA Medical Center cleaning up the Rooftop Healing Garden.

The week culminated with our traditional outdoor Memorial Day celebration. U.S. Rep Brenda Lawrence and Gulf War Veteran and GPWMA Board Member Thomas Smith spoke. Hundreds of community members of all ages came out to pay tribute to those brave men and women who gave their lives in service to their country. They sat on our back lawn in hushed reverence as the names of the fallen were read and a bell tolled in remembrance.

SUMMER PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

ENLIGHTEN, EDUCATE AND ENTERTAIN Summer was a blast here at the War Memorial. Our new Campville USA, supported by the Stonisch Foundation, offered more than 25 mini-camps to keep kids of all ages active, engaged and having fun. The diverse line-up included everything from Musical Theatre Camp to Lego Robotics to American Girl to Cooking Boot Camp.

In July, we presented SummerFest, three-weeks of outdoor entertainment featuring concerts, theatre, dance, and movies on our beautiful back lawn overlooking Lake St. Clair. The events were all free thanks to the generosity of our supporters: Presenting Sponsor Bank of America Merrill Lynch and sponsors St. John Health System, Dynamic HR, Cynthia and Julius Huebner, Michigan Humanities Council and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

NEW GARDEN, BEE HIVE AT GP WAR MEMORIAL Things are buzzing and growing over here!

Bringing the farm-to-table movement to the War Memorial, Executive Chef Angelo Loria has planted a garden on our property and installed a bee hive! Loria has already been using some of the herbs from the garden for meals he’s prepared here and plans a harvest dinner with the bounty in the fall. The crop includes heirloom tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, and herbs like basil, lavender, thyme and rosemary. A few feet away from the garden is a new bee hive, installed by Francois Faloppa of the Honey Bee Squad. Loria hopes the hive will help restore the declining numbers of honey bees (an issue which as gained national attention), as well as help pollinate the garden. “Honey bees are a critical part of the food production system and of our agriculture,” said Loria, who is passionate about the local food movement. “We wanted to do our part, at least locally, to increase the population of honey bees and to raise awareness of this problem.”

Q&A

WITH BRANDON FABER

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW POSITION AS DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. WHAT EXACTLY IS “COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT” AS IT APPLIES TO THE WAR MEMORIAL? Community engagement really means a lot and the defining boundaries are thin. The department was called Life Long Learning, but I think the more malleable and forward-thinking term for any organization of vitality is “community engagement.” It makes you pause and ask, “What is community?” Are we serving those who walk through the door of the War Memorial, all of Grosse Pointe, or all of Southeastern Michigan? I believe that the broader the spectrum of “community” we recognize, the healthier we’ll be. So the programming we offer, in particular to all of the nonprofit areas, is really centered in the community engagement department. Focusing on that kind of work has led us to a pretty catchy and simple phrase: arts, learning, and engagement. WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE COMING TO THE WAR MEMORIAL? Before coming to the War Memorial, I was the Executive Director for the Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra, a very exciting and innovative regional orchestra that just celebrated its 40th anniversary. Prior to that, I was in Long Beach, California, in graduate school for orchestral conducting. I’ve been a lot of places working and studying from Michigan to California to Switzerland, but I’m very excited to now be in a uniquely special community working for the War Memorial. YOU USED THE PHRASE “ARTS, LEARNING, AND ENGAGEMENT.” WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DEFINING EXAMPLES FOR THIS PHRASE? It’s a lot, especially when you think about all of our classes, special learning events like Cooking on the Terrace, sponsored groups, and special events. But we have some truly defining series such as SummerFest, a musical performance series called Arts at the Alger, which will be in its second year, as well as a few new programs we’re launching—for example, Movies on Sunday and a speakers series called This Americana. YOU’RE REALLY WORKING TO CREATE SOMETHING WITH A LOT OF CONNECTION AND ACCESS POINTS. WHERE’S IT ALL LEADING? It has a lot to do with how people understand and take advantage of what we do that drives the events we program. We are a presenting organization, meaning that, quite simply, we provide a platform for content that serves our community. But we also get to work with a lot of individuals to curate new programming. Thinking about it that way leads us to a shift in how people view us: we become a destination point for great events that are cultural, educational, and entertaining. If people spend most of their time at home and at work, there’s going to be a third space that is really important to them— people naturally gravitate towards an interesting and accessible third space that’s not work or home. I always like to ask people where is the third space they prefer to spend their time. Residents of Grosse Pointe have a lot of options for places to frequent, but we offer a lot in a very unique array of combinations. We’re setting ourselves up to be that third space for a lot of people because that defines the business we’re in. We’re third spacing. WHAT’S NEXT? We’re working hard to keep alive the wonderful things that we’re known for while enhancing our positive impact on the greater community. We’re also focusing on our patrons, giving them an entire experience with consumer-sensitive pricing and benefits. It’s not just about doing things well, but doing things right for our long-standing friends and our new friends. One example of this certainly is removing the online surcharges. That’s already started and will continue this fall as we make it easier for people to come and enjoy all that we have to offer. I look forward to meeting a lot of new faces—those who’ve been coming to the War Memorial for years and those who are brand new.

PLAYHOUSE A GIFT

TO GROSSE POINTE MEMORIAL CHURCH

Val Moran (right) and Woodworking classmates paint the play house a lovely spring green.

Students in Ken Leiter’s Woodworking class (www.leiterwoodwork.com) here at the War Memorial had a special mission this past spring. Deciding to use their time building a special project that would benefit others, they created a cheerful one-room playhouse for the children in the community to enjoy. The playhouse is being given to the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church for use in the children’s play area, in honor of the church’s 150th anniversary this fall.

MOVE DETROIT TALK EXPLORES A WALKABLE DETROIT Earlier this summer, about 150 community residents gathered in the GPWM Auditorium to hear a talk on promoting public transportation and making Detroit a more lively, walkable city given by urban development expert Gil Penalosa. The talk, entitled “Sustainable Mobility for a Vital and Competitive Region,” co-hosted by Jefferson East, was part of Move Detroit, a week of workshops, discussions and activities on creating vibrant, inclusive and innovative public places.

6

“We were thrilled to be a part of this important conversation and to partner with Jefferson East,” said Charles Burke, President and CEO of the War Memorial. “Building connections and partnerships is essential to the sustainability of Metro Detroit and the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association. The Move Detroit conference was a key step in incubating that effort.” Community leaders and local residents enjoyed the summer evening at a reception on our back terrace held before the talk.
