Céline Dion’s ‘Courage’ Leads Her Back To #1

Céline Dion returned to the top after 17 years, hitting #1 on the Billboard 200 with her latest album, Courage, her first English album in six years. It now ranks as her fifth career #1 album, earning her a #1 album each decade for the past three decades. The album has also landed in the top 10 in over 10 countries and counting. "I feel like we've made a great album, and I'm so grateful to the songwriters, the producers, the engineers, and all the musicians who shared their incredible talent with me in creating something really special," said Dion. The #1 debut stems from a packed New York release week where Dion celebrated the album release by inviting fans to LIPS in New York City for a drag karaoke contest and a performance of "Flying On My Own" from the album. Dion also appeared on “CBS This Morning,” NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen on Bravo. Dion’s “Courage World Tour” continues through 2020 across North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe. For tour information, visit celinedion.com.

BOUNTIFUL GOURMET: Fogo de Chao I now know what the last days of Rome were like before the fall: Food of every kind in unlimited quantities. The opening of Fogo de Chao in Carle Place was a true happening. There are nearly 50 Fogo locations across the United States, but this was the first on Long Island for this Brazilian steakhouse chain. Fogo has built a stunning restaurant in the back of one of the area's underutilized shopping centers. The décor is exquisite, with an emphasis on Brazilian culture. Visually, it is really a big notch above other area steakhouses. For those who haven't been to a Brazilian or Portuguese steakhouse, it means unlimited food. The Churrasco is beautiful racks of meats, brought to your table and carved in front of you by the server. Start with its Market Table; to call it a salad bar would be demeaning. This is a magnificent spread of all kinds of salads, cold smoked salmon, black pepper candied bacon, and a great Charcuterie featuring imported Prosciutto, Calabrese Salami, Parma Ham, Toscana Salami, plus rich assortments of cheeses including blue cheese, smoked provolone, and the list goes on. Although this is part of the larger meal and included, an unbelievable bargain is the Market Table at lunchtime; Monday through Friday, it is only $15! If you go full tilt boogie, you'll want to have the Churrasco, top quality grilled meats. The assortment is endless, but includes beef ribs, bacon

By Rich Branciforte

wrapped steak, top sirloin, filet mignon, and our favorite, which just oozed with juice, the ribeye. Prices: $39 for lunch, $59 at dinner. For those who haven't been to a Brazilian steakhouse, you are given two chips on your table, one red, one green. When the green is displayed, servers come by with the meats and carve it right in front of you. You can indicate you want to take a break or to stop by displaying the red chip. Service is over the top fine, you are constantly asked how everything is and if you want more. It's almost impossible after eating this feast to have dessert, but for the sake of our readers, we struggled and were triumphant. We vanquished a chunk of delicious strawberry cheese cake and a molten lava cake with ice cream. Fogo de Chao is not the place you would go to weekly, but for those who savor fine food and great service, it is perfect for a night out or a special night like an anniversary or birthday. And the folks at Fogo have kindly located their new restaurant a half mile from the Good Times office. It can't get much better. Fogo de Chao is located at 235 Old Country Road in Carle Place; call them at (516) 588-7100. It is an experience you don't want to miss, and you will want to spread the word to friends and family. Just make sure you come hungry.

SPORTS BEAT The New York Giants had no choice but to fire head coach Pat Shurmur after he compiled a 9-23 record in his two seasons at the helm. In fairness, he did the best that he could with a bad hand; Shurmur did a fine job with the quarterback transition from Eli Manning to 2019 first-round draft pick Daniel Jones. Shurmur also had to deal with bad rosters that general manager Dave Gettleman handed him. Aside from Jones and running back Saquon Barkley, Shurmur did not have many NFL-caliber players Saquon at his disposal, and stated as Barkley such at one of his final press conferences. Clearly, he knew the handwriting was on the wall, and figured there was no point in being diplomatic. The New York Jets managed to finish the 2019 season with a 7-9 record after having been at a lowly 1-7 at the season’s midpoint. I had to laugh when SNY Jets beat reporter Jeane Coakley kept asking Jets players if their good finish would give them “momentum” going into the 2020 season. The players did not want to embarrass her, so they agreed. The reality is that there will be a lot

BOWLING

Something Seasoned From LIGBT: The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT) has added to its schedule with new a club, The Senior Legends Tour, which will stage its second monthly event on February 23 at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. Like the LIGBT, this is a professionaly run club for bowlers 50 and older, with a top prize of $1,000 to be awarded at events (guaranteed with 70 or more entrants). Get all the information on these new events by logging on to ligbtour.com, or call (702) 530-0708.

Chris Thomas & Denis Mendelson In recent LIGBT tournament news, the first Senior Legends tour (SLT) champs were crowned on January 7 at AMF Babylon Lanes as Denis Mendelson of Levittown won the upper average division and $800 in this first-ever event; Christopher Thomas of Brooklyn earned $800 to take home the

of roster turnover during the off-season because the Jets aren’t that good, and they're in a tough division; The New England Patriots may be showing signs of slippage, but they are still far better – and the same can be said for The Buffalo Bills, who have made the postseason twice in the last three seasons (while the Jets have now gone nine straight seaons without doing so). The Jets did beat the Bills 13-6 to close out the season, but it was a troubling win as the Bills, with nothing to play for as their playoff berth was sealed, played their backups while the Jets played their starters and still struggled. If things weren’t grim enough, The Miami Dolphins, the one team that did finish behind the Jets in the AFC East standings, have first-round picks in the two upcoming NFL drafts. As former Jets QB and curmudgeonly SNY commentator Ray Lucas pointed out, it’s impossible to know how good a quarterback or not Sam Darnold is. He missed three games recovering from mononucleosis early in the season that

basically ended the team's season. Even if he had stayed healthy, the Jets woeful offensive line made it impossible for him to have time to find open wide receivers. Too many Jets offensive series turned out be three downs and a punt. The Jets' porous offensive line also had a negative impact on running back Le’Veon Bell, who couldn’t even gain 800 yards for the season. Part of that lack of production had to do with the play-calling of Jets head coach Adam Gase, who has never Jamal Adams been a fan of running backs. If the Jets don’t make the playoffs in 2020, Gase should meet the same fate as Shurmur. The one coach who deserves a world of credit

shockingly good. Williams was able to make a personality I find difficult to listen to is serviceable cornerback out of Arthur Maulet, who John “J.J.” Jastremski. I have a low tolerance never seemed to know how to tackle but had a for his contrived “blue collar mythical New York knack for making interceptions when the Jets sports fan” accent that comes off like a bad needed to stop opposing drives the most. Mike Francesa wannabe. Former Seattle Seahawks receiver Nate Burleson may be the next Michael Strahan. Michael Burleson is one of the personalities on Kay CBS’s “The NFL Today” pre- and Nate post-game shows, part of the talent Burleson on The NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” and does entertainment reporting for the syndicated TV show “Extra.” WFAN has always dominated ESPN New York (98.7 FM) in the local sports radio ratings, but things may be changing: Michael Kay finally beat Mike Francesa in the 2019 fourth quarter Arbitrons after losing 62 straight quarters. ESPN New York has also hired Bart Scott and Chris Carlin, both former 'FAN personalities. WFAN has moved the team of Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts into up and down the field at will en route to a 17-16 Mike Francesa’s old time slot; Maggie win that was definitely a harbinger of how the Gray and Marc Malusis have taken season would go. FILM: The Giants Of January 1977 Starring George MacKay, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Colin Firth Directed by Sam Mendes Universal Pictures Now in theaters This movie was released a bit late for us to put it

The Gentlemen Starring Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant Written and directed by Guy Ritchie STXfilms • Now in theaters Laughs, action, surprises, and plenty of curse words flow in this action/comedy about an American (McConaughey) who becomes a ultra-rich pot peddler in London – but when word gets out that he wants out of the dope trade is when a whole mess of trouble begins. With Guy Ritchie at the helm, there's never a dull moment as plot twists, a funny script, and more than a few wild and crazy characters will keep you riveted throughout the running time; leave the little ones at home for this one.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Starring Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Carrie Fisher Directed by J.J. Abrams Walt Disney Pictures • Now in theaters The fine performance of Daisy Ridley as Rey once again pretty much steals the entire show in this return of the Star Wars saga, which, despite pulling in more than $478 million since its release (at press time), seems like it’s getting stale. Critics pretty much blasted this installment, and we're inclined to agree – mixing the old with the new for the fourth time doesn't feel special any longer, and this one clearly has the weakest plot of any Star Wars film to date.

on our Top 10 of 2019 list (it’s already won a Golden Globe and the Oscars will assuredly come calling), but it will assuredly make our 2020 compendium: This is one of those rare cases of a critically lauded film being a box office smash at the same time, especially considering the serious subject matter covered here. Director Sam Mendes' greatest achievement, set in World War 1, is filmmaking at its best: Incredible sets, superb cinematography, and perfect acting meld together to create an epic that will live with you for days after you leave the theater. Here's to 2020 U.S. audiences for actually leaving their homes to go out and see such an important work of art.

DEMOLITION

Joe Piket Songwriter: Volume 1 Independent Who: Most Long Island music fans are familiar with keyboardist, guitarist, and singer/songwriter Joe Piket, as he's entertained thousands throughout his decades in music. Now, he and bassist and drummer Nelson Montana have joined to issue this justreleased album that takes a look back at some of the earliest songs Piket composed between 1969 and 1988, and it's a revelation: A myriad of styles and moods (in addition to tight performances) makes this one a keeper. The lavish packaging includes an old-fashioned touch, with the lyrics to each song printed on the multi-gatefold. The Songs: “Soft Summer Song,” “Rainbow Villa,” “The Year Of Goodbye,” “So Warm (Million Dollar Joyride,” “Wanderlust,” “Your Time,” “Girl, You're Not A Queen Anymore,” “Sunlit Sky,” “Tragic Poet.”

RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

Oh, “I-Man”: I now bid a fond farewell to Don Imus. He truly changed the course of radio, and, on a personal note, granted me a TV spot on his short-lived "Imus Plus" talk show, which unwisely chose to try and compete with a then-new program called "Saturday Night Live" on NBC (my appearance is pictured below). Imus had shaken AM Top 40 radio to its foundations with a morning talk show on WNBC that rose to the top of the ratings, and, for the first time in decades, knocked “Music Radio” 77 WABC out of the perch it had owned since the 1960s Beatles era. Harry Harrison no longer ruled supreme, and AM radio stations nationwide, feeling the effects of FM stereo radio, quickly adjusted, deserting hit music in the mornings for talk and comedy shows. One Imus fan in particular, a young Howard Stern, paid close attention; Stern was later hired by WNBC as well. Needless to say, Stern and Imus were far from friends, and as Stern took on a punk attitude and went into areas on his eventual morning show that radio had never dared to attempt, he left Imus in the dust and rose to heights never achieved by anyone before or since. While Stern never really connected on TV, Imus completely nosedived with the aforementioned Saturday night TV experiment. Before that show bit the dust, Imus invited me to appear as a guest, where I had the pleasure of going head to head with him. His producer wanted me as a solo, but I insisted that my band, The Psychotic Frogs, should appear with me, and although we were not allowed to perform "Death To Disco," Imus told me that he thought I had potential and asked if I'd like a big time radio DJ to manage my career. I leaned in and said, "Sounds great! Do you know any?” The audience laughed, Don frowned, and that was the end of that. Rest in peace, Imus. Finally: The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame has made its announcements of inductees for this year (and we will get deeper into it in the next Rhythm Tracking), but we must finally breath a along overdue sigh of relief over the induction of T. Rex, an Marc act that has been at the top of my yearly Bolan “unfairly overlooked" list for years. I have made it clear many times that, in my opinion, glam rock was viewed as a threat by radio and the U.S. rock press, and they were determined to suppress the joyously rocking sounds making their way over from the UK. Alongside Ziggy-era David Bowie, T. Rex's main man Marc Bolan was considered public enemy number one, and after "Bang A Gong" managed to hit the U.S. Top 20, covert forces made sure that nothing else from T. Rex was given its day in court ever again. Better late than never, and congratulations to T. Rex's entry into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Photo courtesy Jimi LaLumia

PRO WRESTLING

With Bob Smith

My PWI Past: Want to relive part of your humble pro wrestling scribe's “storied” past? There's ways to do it: Yes, you can actually hear this writer call matches from the earliest days of ECW (first known as Eastern Championship Wrestling) on WWE Network; go to the “Hidden Gems” section and check out “The Best Of ECW Volume 2,” which features a bunch of bloody bouts; of particular note on the program of 1992 matches is a Ivan Koloff versus Ivan Koloff Tommy Cairo in a Russian chain match. Also: The Arcadian Vanguard podcast network has rebroacast a John Arezzi-led “Pro Wrestling Spotlight” radio show from 1989 featuring myself, Paul Heyman, Bill Apter, Broadway Sonny Blaze, Chris Michaels, and more. Log on and go back in time; I've done it myself, and it's been a mind-blowing blast from the past (considering I had never actually heard or seen these broadcasts before). Here, There, Everywhere: As this issue was being written, the scuttlebutt on the web was that Rusev was on the verge of leaving WWE after he left a cryptic comment on his Twitter bio … In case you missed it (and judging by the ratings books, you have), Tessa Blanchard defeated Sami Callahan on January 12 to become the Impact wrestling champion – in the men's division. At the time that occurred, this accomplishment was overshadowed by claims of alleged bad behavior in the past by Blanchard from other female competitors. Blanchard is a major talent; she's the daughter of NWA legend Tully Blanchard, and it shows. Time will tell how all of this falls out, and whether she'll The keep her newfound belt for an Question extended period – which, Mark frankly, would be surprising for a myriad of reasons. Regardless of all the hubbub, Tessa Blanchard is someone too few fans have seen in action to date … NWA Power on YouTube keeps rolling along, offering weekly shows with both old school and new age flavor at the same time. An unexpected star in the Billy Corgan-owned federation is The Question Mark, who looks like a masked 1970s jobber but who has been wildly taken in by fans during TV tapings, thanks in part to his “friendship” with the hilarious NWA National champion Aron Stevens (formerly billed as Damien Sandow in WWE). Fans are buzzing that the e “Mongrovian karate expert” Question Mark is actually the veteran wrestler Bosephus, but that hasn't been proven; until then, the entire scenario is surprising, entertaining, and laugh-out-loud funny ... At press time, massive Brian Cage was a free agent; it had been reported that he’d signed with AEW, but that was refuted just a couple of days later ... Serious wrestling fans are mourning the loss of New Japan Pro Wrestling, which was dropped by AXS-TV, which now is showing Impact Wrestling and WOW. Bob Smith is the former magazing editor of Pro Wrestling Illustrated and served as executive editor for WCW Magazine.

BITS & PIECES

Samantha Sidley: In NYC This Week The surging Los Angeles-based Samantha Sidley headlines a three-night stand from February 6 through 8 at The Green Room 42 in New York City as shrides high on the charts with her video for the track “I Can't Listen.” The song, written by Inara George, is about struggling with depression – but the jazz singer is positively ebullient about the black-andwhite, noir-styled video. The clip was directed by Nigel DeFriez, a friend who also helmed the clip for “I Like Girls,” another track from Sidley’s debut album, Interior Person.

Kesha

Just Days From Her New Album

Pop superstar Kesha recently released “Resentment,” the newest track to come from her forthcoming album, and a reflection on being done wrong by a lover and holding onto that negativity. The new album will be released January 31 via Kemosabe/RCA Records. This month will also find Kesha announcing a nationwide headlining U.S. tour, as well as appearing as both a performer and chat guest on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”

Paige Cora: Her ‘Instant In Time’ Has Come

Singer/songwriter Paige Cora's debut album, Instant In Time, was released last week. The new effort was written and produced by the Ontariobased artist herself, engineered and mixed by Jae Daniel, and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London by Christian Wright (Ed Sheeran, Franz Ferdinand, Blur, Keane). To date, the young star has opened for iconic artists such as The Jesus & Mary Chain, Eric Anderson, Ian Hunter, and more. Album release shows and tour dates will be announced soon via paigecora. com.

Metallica: Their Massive Good Deed

Metallica recently issued a press release announcing a massive donation for Australia: A total of $750,000 to The NSW Rural Fire Service and to The Country Fire Authority in Victoria, Australia to aid in the relief efforts in the fire-ravaged country. Learn more about how you can help at rfs.nsw.gov.au.

OZZY

The Prince Of Darkness Rises ... To #1

Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Ozzy Osbourne had the #1 rock song in the country during early December, as his single "Under The Graveyard" captured the #1 position on the Rock Radio Chart. This marks his third #1 on this chart and his first in 10 years; "Under The Graveyard" is his first new solo music in as many years. It also heralds the Black Sabbath legend's forthcoming album, Ordinary Man, due out on Epic Records later this year.
