CLASSIC ROCK

Paul Simon Seven Psalms

Paul Simon announced the release of his highly anticipated musical work, Seven Psalms. Intended to be listened to as one continuous piece, the 33-minute, seven-movement composition transcends the concept of the “album” and was released in its entirety on vinyl, CD and across digital platforms on May 19th.

Recorded entirely on acoustic instruments, and predominantly performed by Paul, Seven Psalms showcases Simon’s craft at its finest and most captivating, simply with his voice and guitar

An intricately layered work, it’s a record which establishes an engaging and meditative, almost hymnal soundscape, with Paul’s lyrics providing the gravitational center for constellations of sound woven from guitar strings and other acoustic instrumentation – including choral elements from the highlyregarded British vocal ensemble VOCES8, and a beautiful vocal appearance by Edie Brickell.

The record’s tone is complemented by its artwork, which features a close-up extract of “Two Owls” by the celebrated landscape artist Thomas Moran.

Neal Schon Journey Through Time

Frontiers Music Srl announced the release of Neal Schon’s ‘Journey Through Time’, a live concert recorded on February 9, 2018 at The Independent in San Francisco, CA, on May 19, 2023.

This is the show where Neal Schon, founding member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted band Journey, first debuted ‘Journey Through Time’ along with two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and former Journey and Santana bandmate, Gregg Rolie. Joining Schon and Rolie were current Journey member Deen Castronovo on vocals and drums, Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake) on bass, and John Varn on keyboards and vocals.

Performing to a sold out crowd for a benefit show, the band played songs spanning Journey’s entire catalog, largely focusing on the band’s ‘70s repertoire, including the band’s first three albums, ‘Journey’, ‘Look Into The Future’, and ‘Next’.

Multi-Grammy nominated Schon founded Journey in 1972 and remains the sole consistent member, having participated in every album and tour to date. Before founding Journey, Schon was also a member of Santana and has performed with a variety of other acts including Bad English, Hardline, and HSAS and with Jan Hammer and Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free).

GENESIS REVISITED: FOXTROT AT FIFTY

Prog rock legend Steve Hackett will be revisiting his stellar work with Genesis when he launches the North American leg of his ‘Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot and Fifty + Hackett Highlights’ tour in the fall (which will be predated by a tour throughout Europe in the spring).

Tickets can be purchased via Hackett’s official site: https://www.hackettsongs.com/news/tour-foxtrot-at-fifty-plus-hackett-highlights.html

“I’m thrilled to be bringing my ‘Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights’ tour to the USA and Canada in the autumn, and very much look forward to seeing you all then!”

The show will feature the 1972 Genesis album ‘Foxtrot’ performed in full, plus additional fan favorites. Long considered one a classic prog releases, ‘Foxtrot’ spawned such all-time great Genesis tracks as “Watcher of the Skies” and the over 20 minute long epic “Supper’s Ready.”

North American fans will get to experience the ‘Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot and Fifty + Hackett Highlights’ tour for themselves! He’ll be appearing October 14th at Town Hall.

As part of this year’s itinerary, the rock & roll powerhouse will be the “special guests” of Kid Rock for two hometown shows in Michigan at Little Caesars Arena on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15.

STIMMERMAN NEW ALBUM

Stimmerman is the rock band of Eva Lawitts. With deceptively unusual rhythms, colorful and jagged harmonies and clear, repeatable melodies, Stimmerman makes music that feels a little bit like Art-Rock, but with no pretense, or a little bit like grunge, but glasses on. Eva’s mother is a classical oboist, and from a young age intricate baroque melodies floated through their house. From there a childhood love of At the Drive In, Motorhead, and Hendrix, an adolescent love of Mastodon and Eric Dolphy and an adult love of Gillian Welch and Jon Bap, as well as broadly speaking, a love of of all kinds poured into the songs of Stimmerman, which aim to hold a cathartic space for the audience.

At their live shows, Stimmerman deliver on an unpredictable upending of their own songs, weaving improvised sections, dynamic waves and of course, a couple gags through the bones of their songs.

They’re appearing July 13 for a record release show at Purgatory in Brooklyn.

Red Matter Shines Bright

Genre bending jam band Red Matter presents their debut studio single and live action video for “LIGHT OF THE MOON” - available now on Spotify, Youtube and all the major music and video services.

While performing nearly two hundred fifty shows across the East Coast over the past several years, the name Red Matter has become synonymous with explosive success. Ask their legion of followers, or better yet, take in a show on any given night; you’ll find sophisticated songwriting with danceable rhythms - full of rollicking extended jams, musical improvisation, visual stimulation, and all-out aural excitement.

With a jam band ethos, appreciation for contemporaries such as Gov’t Mule, Dawes, Goose and Tedeschi Trucks Band, and a nod to the O.G.’s of the genre like Grateful Dead, Phish, Jefferson Airplane and Santana, Red Matter hits all the high notes, fusing elements of rock n roll, blues, Americana, and psychedelia creating a truly versatile, eclectic style.

ANNIKA SOCOLOFSKY “DON’T SAY A WORD”

On June 23rd, Annika Socolofsky, a composer and avant-folk vocalist who explores colorful corners of the human voice – tones and timbres and techniques often dismissed as “untrained” or “unclassical” – releases “Don’t say a word”, an album of feminist rager-lullabies for the new queer era.

Socolofsky released the Xuan-produced video for “Like a Diamond,” a textual mashup of the oft-forgotten second verse of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and the traditional Welsh hymn “Ar Hyd y Nos/All Through the Night,” written in memory of Socolofsky’s late Great Aunt Edie.

After years of being othered, Socolofsky ushered her anger into “Don’t say a word”. Through the process, the composer found love again — love for the disenfranchised child inside, and for her family – both given and chosen – who have been there for her. While searching for her lost love, Socolofsky also ransacked, reappropriated, and retold some of society’s most-loved lullabies.

In this raging rebellion against once-soothing words, Socolofsky wrote “Don’t say a word”, eight new lullabies for her adult self, cradle songs that assert love long muffled: self-love, queer love, love for her temper and tongue, and love for those who have lighted her way.

Summertime is here and I hope you’re getting ready for all of the amazing concerts and activities to come in NYC. There’s some great shows coming through that you’ll definitely want to check out.

First up we have DJ_Dave playing at Elsewhere in Brooklyn on June 15. I first found DJ_Dave at Electric Forest in 2022 and she blew me away. DJ_Dave has a very fun and energetic style of music with an emphasis on house. However, there’s something extra unique about her performances; she writes computer code live to affect the music that’s being played. On the visual display behind the DJ, computer code can be seen and is edited live. I wish I knew how it all worked, but the concept itself is very interesting and the most unique thing I’ve seen a DJ do. This gives the show a bit of a cool tech feel to it as DJ_Dave modulates the computer code to modulate the music. She is a force to be reckoned with and this will be one of those memorable experiences you just have to see for yourself.

Another unique experience to check out is on June 24 on Circle Line Cruises. House duo Ship Wrek will be performing on a literal ship. That’s good branding if I’ve ever seen it. Ship Wrek always throws down an exciting show with high energy house music and all around good vibes. The fact that they’re doing this set on a boat is even that much cooler. I mean, is there any reason you wouldn’t go see this? If you want that vibe but get a little too seasick, you can stop by The Brooklyn Mirage on July 2 to check out the master himself, James Hype. James Hype has been growing rapidly in the US and one of the key aspects of his performance is his ability to do complex mixing live. He will often post videos of himself mixing several songs together and really showcases his talents as a DJ. He’s not just standing up there and pressing play; his performances are truly live and packed full of talent. He knows how to get a party started and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. If you’re looking for something a bit parts of the song. This album goes hard and I can’t wait to see Tvboo throw down some of this album live.

If you’re looking for something a bit more vibey, Griz just released a remix of John Summit’s “Where You Are” and it’s got all of the future bass goodness packed into a top tier produced song. With vocals by Hayla, this track truly transports you to a different world and leaves nothing to be desired. It’s just that good and is also a bit of a departure from Griz’s normal style. But I love seeing artists changing up what kind of music they make and exploring different parts of the scene. That’s what making music is all about and I see a budding friendship between John Summit and Griz. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a back to back set from them soon. heavier, look no further than July 6 at the Brooklyn Mirage. Black Tiger Sex Machine will be going on tour and is joined by Veil, Kai Wachi, and Ruvlo. This is an all star lineup if I’ve ever seen one. This show is going to be filled with all of the dubstep and deep bass one could hope for. That, mixed with Brooklyn Mirage’s new 180 degree visual screen, will be a show that will knock you down with every drop. Veil and Ruvlo are newer in the scene, but they bring the heat and I can tell they’re going to blow up sooner rather than later.

Thanks for tuning in this month and hope to see you out there in the streets of New York. Feel free to reach out at richiegtechno@gmail.com! And remember, keep raging my friends.

Tvboo has been on a tear lately and there has been nothing stopping this man from releasing some of the wonkiest and heaviest music out there on the market. He recently released his Honkers EP which is a collaborative EP with Space Wizard, Shanghai Doom, Sodown, and DirtySnatcha. This album has got everything I could’ve hope for, from some funky elements, bass down low, and unique sound design. It’s always fun listening to collaborations and hearing artists specific styles shine through in various
