The summer heat has not hit us yet, member events are filling up calendars, and there is still quite a bit to look forward to in the coming months before the season ends. Tampa Bay will be home to not one, but two tour events in the coming months, as the Valspar Championship will be at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor from March 16-22. The lineup will include two-time defending champion Paul Casey and number one ranked golfer Brooks Koepka. Local favorites Nelly Korda and Brittany Lincicome and many more stars of the LPGA will be competing at the Inaugural Pelican Women’s Championship at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair May 11-17. Our cover story for our spring issue features local favorite Fox Hollow Golf Club, a Robert Trent Jones, Sr.- designed masterpiece that offers a test to both professionals and amateurs alike. The LPGA Returns to Tampa Bay May 11-17 The stars of women’s professional golf are headed to the Tampa Bay region for one of the most talked about new events this year in all of professional golf. The inaugural Pelican Women’s Championship will be contested at the Pelican Golf Club, a Donald Ross design that has been completely overhauled to create a truly unique experience for golfers and fans. The Tampa Bay region last hosted the LPGA in 1989 when the final St. Petersburg Open was played at the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club. The Tampa Women’s Open was held at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club from 1947-1960. The field for the Pelican Women’s Championship will be one of the strongest in all of professional golf and is expected to include stars like Lexi Thompson, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Brooke Henderson. It’s also expected to include top-ranked players with ties to the Tampa area including Brittany Lincicome and Nelly Korda. The week of festivities includes activities for kids and adults of all ages. Children under 18 get in free and are invited to the Junior Golf Show on Saturday to meet and mingle with LPGA professionals and learn about what it takes to be a professional athlete. The event also includes the opportunity to play and party alongside the pros in the Pelican Pro-Am. Golfers of all abilities are invited to contact the tournament office to learn more about this unforgettable experience. The tournament has been highly engaged in the community during its first year, including the launch of a Ticket Design Contest with local elementary schools. Thousands of students are

submitting their own designs and four winners will be selected to appear on the faces of the Daily Grounds Passes. The Women’s Leadership Summit on Tuesday of tournament week promises to be an amazing afternoon of personal and career development. Speakers include notable community and business leaders, as well as some of the world’s top professional golfers showcasing their skills. Every professional golf tournament needs an army of volunteers to assist in operations. While volunteer support has been especially strong leading into the first year, there are always open positions available. A few lucky volunteers will even have the opportunity to play a round of golf at the Pelican following the tournament. There are a variety of ticket options to attend the event. Grounds passes start at only $20 and provide the opportunity to walk the course and witness not only the impressive play of the golfers but experience the immaculate course renovation completed by Beau Welling Design. Fans looking to entertain family, friends or clients can check out the Lightning Lounge, a fully-enclosed luxury skybox overlooking the 18th green with complimentary food and beverages, climate control, private bathroom, televisions and observation deck. Fox Hollow Golf Club Tampa Bay’s Premier Semi-Private Golf Club

The course was recently rated 57th by Golf Digest’s “Top 75 Courses Accessible to the Public in Florida.” One of the goals of Fox Hollow’s ownership is to take the facility to a higher level by elevating course conditions and constantly making improvements.

Fox Hollow has hosted local qualifying for the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur as well as qualifiers for the Valspar Championship, the PGA Tour event held annually at Innisbrook Golf Resort. The par-71 championship layout features five sets of tees and offers new challenges every time it’s played, mixing native trees and vegetation, sparkling lakes, sand bunkers and a variety of wildlife. Fox Hollow’s rolling fairways are a delightful departure from the pancake-flat layouts found elsewhere in Florida.

The third hole is a straightaway par 4 – measuring 451 yards from the back tee – that will challenge the most accomplished ball strikers. Viewing the hole from the tee there’s a water hazard left and OB right. A massive oak tree on the right pinches in the landing area, making the tee shot extremely demanding. The approach shot is uphill to a wide, narrow green protected by a deep bunker in front and more sand on the player’s left. From the tips, Fox Hollow’s finishing hole is a robust 445 yards. From the white tees it’s a slightly more manageable 429 yards. With water guard-

ing both sides from tee to green, the fairway appears to be an island of grass. Place your drive in play and your work is only half done. The approach demands a long, accurate shot to a large, undulating green protected by yawning bunkers front left and right. Fox Hollowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s putting surfaces feature SeaDwarf Paspalum, a hearty turfgrass that can be irrigated with effluent, reclaimed, or even seawater. This grass also has the ability to deliver fast green speeds (9+ on the Stimpmeter) and requires less fertilizer, pesticide, weed control and irrigation than other grasses. Tarpon Springs Golf Course Originally built in 1908, the Tarpon Springs golf course follows the architecture of the time with small, elevated greens and quite a few doglegs. The course is very scoreable on your good days, while water hazards can wreak havoc on your bad ones. During the summer of 2014, all 18 greens and two practice greens were reconstructed. The greens now feature new contours and state-of-the-art Seashore Paspalum turf. At the same time, bunkers were re-sanded and the driving range renovated. Valspar Championship Returns March 16-22

The Valspar Championship, one of the premier tournaments on the PGA TOUR®, returns to the challenging Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, on March 16-22, 2020. 2018/2019 Champion Paul Casey will be attempting a tournament historic 3-peat, but he’ll need to defeat 143 other top PGA Tour professionals first, including Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Jim Furyk, Gary Woodland, Bubba Watson, Cameron Smith, Charl Schwartzel, Adam Hadwin, Viktor Hovland and many more. Tournament patrons will also have a chance to see headliner Chris Young and special guests Big & Rich in a free concert. The Valspar LIVE concert presented by Chick-fil-A takes place on the Osprey Driving Range after the conclusion of play on Saturday, March 21st and is free of charge to Saturday tournament patrons. New in 2020 will be a Copperhead Crawl ticket, which will feature multiple drink tickets and food at a special price. Florida Physio is a Physical Therapy and Sports Performance practice designed specifically for golfers. The business is operated by Dr. Leighton Peavler, a former Division 1 college golfer turned Doctor of Physical Therapy who is certified through the Titleist Performance Institute. The President’s Report The 2020 season has begun.I hope everyone had a great holiday season and you’re ready for another fantastic year! We are extremely proud of our tournament calendar and offerings prepared by our Tournament Chairman, Keith Kulzer, PGA. But before we get into our tournament schedule, the chapter is proud to offer and recognize some other accomplishments. Zoran Ilic, PGA continues to push our Assistant Association into the future. Once again 5 events that combine education and tournament opportunities for our Associates will be offered. If any Associate attends a minimum of 3 events, they will have the opportunity to follow criteria to be awarded an Assistant Grant for $1,000 towards their PGA Associate education. Recently, Gary Koch committed to donating $3,000 to our Assistants Grant from his foundation. We are excited to be able to assist our Associate Professionals financially through their PGA Program and desire to be a PGA Member. Our 2019 grant winners are Harrison McClimans, Matt Camara, Tim Hume, and Dan Kutz. Congratulations to all of our chapter award winners. Each recipient will be recognized after our Pro-Pro at Palma GolfCoastMagazine.com
