The exhibition presents fourteen projects by young architects from Germany that have been completed abroad mainly since 2004. The selected examples from construction, interior design, urban design and landscape architecture show how these architects approach working in foreign environments, how they redefine and add to existing buildings, and how they create new ones under unusual conditions. They come up with sensitive solutions for challenges in architecture today, always with an eye on the future, sustainability, and new technologies. Contrary to today’s global media interest in the spectacular and the star, this exhibition presents innovative architectural projects that confidently and quietly take a pragmatic approach, concentrating entirely on the locations for which they were created. Peregrinate - Field notes on time travel and space

belonging, as well as the possibilities inherent in dislocation, or a lack of anchoring, and the routes one takes to find a way. Sub-titled ‘field notes on time travel and space’, the exhibition examines notions of spatial politics, the economics of time and travel, and the kinds of access granted to travellers. The travels of three different wanderers are juxtaposed as temporal sculptures to chronicle the personal experience of journeying within the home, neighbourhood and country, as well as the act of departing for distant places. Peregrinate features the work of three photographers: South Africans Thabiso Sekgala and Musa Nxumalo, and Kenyan Mimi Cherono Ng’ok. The exhibition explores the concept of photography as a common method of investigation, discovery and representation – an act of wandering undertaken by the photographer as traveller and explorer. Jointly curated by the featured photographers, this exhibition is the final stage for the three participants as part of the Goethe-Institut portfolio workshop, the Photographers Master Class.

Unyazi IV Electronic Music Festival

Part of the Fak’ugesi Digital Africa festival, Unyazi IV has an East Asian focus with artists from Japan and South Korea rubbing shoulders with the best of South Africa’s electronic talent plus performers from the US and Europe: Gift Fig - Carl Stone (US/Japan), Alfred

On Thursday 11 September, a concert at the Goethe-Institut will feature the South African New Music Ensemble performing Stroompie: Continuo for acoustic instruments and live sound processing; specially created for Unyazi IV by Maxim Starcke.

Another highlight is Jozi Rhythmanalogues by Mocke Jansen van Vuuren in collaboration with Theresa Collins. In this performance, the ensemble has created work in response to a graphic score build from time-lapse images taken over 24 hours in our city. Being Faust: Enter Mephisto (A MAZE FESTIVAL 2014) 11/09/2014 – 13/09/2014 Ithuba Gallery, 100 Juta Street, Braamfontein As part of the third A MAZE/Johannesburg International Games, Arts and Playful Media Festival, the Goethe-Institut presents Being Faust: Enter Mephisto (BFEM), an interactive digital-analogue game experience, which re-lives the famous story of J.W. Goethe in our modern and digitalized

world. In BFEM the player will experience the different stages and moments of Goethe’s classic through a game scenario. BFEM was developed by Seoulbased Nolgong Studio in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Korea, and was premiered in 2014 at Kyobo Books, a bookshop in a prime location in the famous Gangnam district in Seoul. The Goethe-Institut also hosts Mũchiri Njenga at A MAZE. Njenga will present a talk on the work of Studio Ang, a Nairobi-based digital and television production house, and the short film “Kichwateli”, which he completed in 2012 with the support of the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi. NEW SOUTH AFRICAN VOICES: The Art of Writing – Experiments and Craftmanship in Literary Texts

form for it. We discuss the importance of research, precise language and unique ideas and investigate what makes an exceptional writer. To feature along the South African literary icon Ivan Vladislavić we have invited German writer Felicitas Hoppe, who is famous and respected for her experimental stance topic- and language wise. Felicitas Hoppe is an accomplished Berlin-based writer of fiction and a world traveller. Her critically

acclaimed works include Picknick der Friseure (short stories, 1996), Pigafetta (after having circumnavigated the world, 1999), Paradiese, Übersee (2003), Verbrecher und Versager (2004), Johanna (2006), Sieben Schätze (Essays, 2009) and Hoppe (autobiographical novel, 2012). Felicitas Hoppe has received a number of prestigious prizes including the Heimito von Doderer Preis and the Nicolas Born Preis. In 2012, she was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis, the most prestigious German literary prize. Ivan Vladislavić was born in Pretoria in 1957 and lives in Johannesburg, where he works as a writer and editor. His books include the novels The Restless Supermarket, The Exploded View and Double Negative, and a compendium of short stories titled Flashback Hotel. In 2006, he published Portrait with Keys, a sequence of documentary texts on Johannesburg. He has edited books on architecture and art. TJ/Double Negative, a joint project with photographer David Goldblatt, received the 2011 Kraszna-Krausz Award for best photography book. His work has also won the Sunday Times Fiction Prize, the Alan Paton Award and the University of Johannesburg Prize. New South African Voices is curated and presented by Morakabe Raks Seakhoa and Indra Wussow.

Johannesburg Street Alphabet Zoo / Isaac Zavale & Minenkulu Ngoyi

GoetheonMain, 245 Main Street, Maboneng Precinct Johannesburg Street recreates the city of Johannesburg as one long street through mediums such as printmaking, painting, photography, videography and publications. Alphabet Zoo is a street-culture zine that invites collaboration with other young talented artists, illustrators, publishers and

designers. By running silk screen and zine workshops, the Alphabet Zoo duo of Minekulu Ngoyi and Isaac Zavale, Johannesburg-based printmakers, will interact with various public spaces, both in terms of production and exhibiting work. One of the aims of the Alphabet Zoo Research Project is to explore the possibilities of hosting the first Zine Fair or Zine Fest in the city of Johannesburg. Ngoyi and Zavale both studied at Artist Proof Studios and have been exhibiting in a number of group shows in the last two years, including “AS SEEN ON TV” at Sibi Gallery, and as part of the Independent Publishing Project at the Goethe-Institut. Ngoyi and Zavale work from Newtown and are involved in running the newly opened printmaking studio Prints on Paper.

‘Rise for you will not perish (on mummymania)’ by Artefakte//anti-humboldt 21/09/2014, 18H30 Origins Centre, Cnr Yale & Enoch Sontonga, Wits University 25/09/2014 – 28/09/2014 Cape Town, details to be confirmed Rise for you will not perish (on mummymania) contemplates the figure of the mummy as a filmic „chronotopos“ dealing with the liminality of the concept of „artefact“. As a colonial/Egyptomanian appropriated dead body - through forceful grave opening and illegitimate de-contextualisation the mummy opens up a field of attraction and conflict between subject (human) and object (non-human), death and life, nature and culture, real and representation. With the historical discovery of the Tuntankhamun’s tomb in 1922, the creepy along with the mummy’s curse supersedes the mysterious, the fantastic and the curious associated with the mummy of the early films. In the museum or on the way there, the mummy becomes disparate and dangerously destructive: it/(s)he embodies the undying resistance against the idea of objectification, reification; it/(s)he activates diachrony – the curse, the revenge, the unresolved history. It is only when the mummy’s corpse falls into dust that the mummy in film finds satisfying closure. However the presence of dead bodies in the cellars of our museums persists. It is here that the buried paradigms tainted with shame lie in wait while the possibility of a new metamorphosis announces itself. Brigitta Kuster, Regina Sarreiter and Dierk Schmidt (Artefakte//antihumboldt) present the video installation as a commented screening.

KiezKino – Harun Farocki Retrospective
30/09/2014, 19H30 The Bioscope Independent Cinema, 286 Fox St, Maboneng Precinct On 30 September, The Bioscope Independent Cinema presents a special commemorative screening as part of Kiezkino series. The evening will be dedicated to filmmaker and video artist Harun Farocki, who unexpectedly passed away in Germany on 30 July. Farocki was in Johannesburg in April this year with artist/curator Antje Ehmann to work with film students at Wits University on the project Labour in a Single Shot. Harun Farocki will be remembered as a pioneer – both in the fields of political filmmaking and video art. Three of Farocki’s films will be screened: Inextinguishable Fire (1969), Workers leaving the Factory (1995) and Nicht ohne Risiko (2004).

Bianca Baldi – Zero Latitude (2014) Opening 02/10/2014, 18H30. Running until 28/10/2014 GOETHE-INSTITUT, 119 JAN SMUTS AVENUE, PARKWOOD Bianca Baldi’s project begins with a particular design object, The Louis Vuitton Explorator. Commissioned by Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza for his expedition to Congo, the highly stylised form of this explorer’s day bed is capable of containing and unfolding not only physically but also conceptually, the trappings and projections accompanying the aesthetic of colonial ambition at Zero Latitude. Along de Brazza’s route down the Congo river, to the place that would eventually bear his name, Baldi unpacks a series of related ‘finds’, conscious of their symbolic capital, as well as the power of elegant decontextualisation and erasure. The wild mythologising of place and time, lived experience and its subsequent narration, are presented in an installation which simultaneously transfixes and contests

the fashioning of representation. Bianca Baldi’s project Zero Latitude (2014) was commissioned and coproduced by the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art with support from the Goethe-Institut.

07/10/2014, 20H30 The Orbit Jazz Club and Bistro, 81 De Korte Street, Braamfontein Hamburg-based jazz trio cnirbs are on a tour of seven different African countries with their new record Hey Kollege, and will play for the first time In South Africa on 7 October at the Orbit Jazz Club. Members of the trio are keyboardist and composer Matthäus Winnitzki, drummer Konrad Ullrich and trumpet and euphonium player Stephan Meinberg. The three “cnirbses” routinely push the boundaries of jazz with their wild rhythms, undertaking brief musical forays into related genres. You can hear borrowings from alternative rock in their music, as well as electronic elements and influences from African and Caribbean music. With their keyboard, brass and percussion instruments, a panoply of cables, flashing little lights and mysterious foot pedals, with their verve and painstakingly-achieved lightness of touch and sound, a live performance by cnirbs is a delightful experience.

Corner Loving by MADEYOULOOK
Opening 23/10/2014, 18H30. Running until 14/12/2014 GoetheonMain, 245 Main Street, Maboneng Precinct Corner Loving is an exhibition of works on paper, an exploration of love and ‘black love’ in complex urban settings. Exploring the nature of
everyday public practice, the collective MADEYOULOOK is interested in unpacking ordinary practices that may be overlooked as simple and inconsequential, but through deeper reflection, act as vehicles for multilayered conversations. Corner loving, the practice of lovers meeting on street corners, though seemingly naïve, is in fact an indication of broader social factors - it is a signifier for how public and private spaces coalesce due to a range of specific social circumstances. The use of public space, particularly the bustling streets of the inner city, for private intimacy, is a logical contradiction of complex urbanity. The exhibition features drawings of corner loving sites, texts by contemporary writers and from historical archives as well as a lecture series that explores the various thematic aspects represented in the practice of corner loving. Lectures will be presented by Thembinkosi Goniwe, Ashraf Jamal and Danai Mupotsa.

23/10/2014, 19H00 GOETHE-INSTITUT, 119 JAN SMUTS AVENUE, PARKWOOD The conniving wheeler-dealer Jaeckie Zucker (Henry Hübchen) is up to his neck in trouble – his wife (Hannelore Elsner) wants a divorce, the court bailiff is threatening him with jail. The only hope left for the former German Democratic Republic sports reporter is his mother’s inheritance. In her will, however, she’s stipulated that Jackie must reconcile his differences with his brother Samuel (Udo Samel) an orthodox Jew. As Samuel and his entire clan move into Jaeckie’s chaotic household, the clash of civilizations is inevitable. But the two stubborn brothers have no choice – they have to get along… Director Dani Levy uses humour and irony to tell the fast-paced story of his protagonist Jaeckie Zucker and the hurdles he must overcome. KiezKino – Gerhard Richter Painting
28/10/2014, 19H30 The Bioscope Independent Cinema, 286 Fox St, Maboneng Precinct KiezKino is a monthly event at The Bioscope Independent Cinema hosted in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. Once a month, a film from the Goethe-Institut film archive is presented at The Bioscope. The KiezKino evening on 28 October will be dedicated to the work of Gerhard Richter, one of the internationally most significant contemporary artists of our times. Gerhard Richter granted filmmaker Corinna Belz access to his studio in the spring and summer of 2009 where he was working on a series of large abstract paintings. The screening offers rare insights into the artist’s work.

CITY DESIRED
30/10/2014 – 10/12/2014 City Hall, Cape Town Curated by Tau Tavengwa and Edgar Pieterse, City Desired will offer Cape Town’s residents and visitors a penetrating insight into the challenges and possibilities facing the unique city. The exhibition will explore the dynamics that echo in cities across the world as they contemplate their purpose in this urban century. The city’s story will be unveiled through well-crafted biographies of 10 Capetonians whose lives offer powerful insights into the minutia of daily life and the larger system in which it plays out. Mapping and visualisation, photography and video, will allow the participant to contextualise the narratives. Free exploration by the visitor is a primary feature of the installation. The lead partners working with the African Centre for Cities (ACC) are: City of Cape Town, Max Planck Institute, Pro Helvetia, Goethe-Institut, Ove Arup Foundation and the Dutch Consulate. In addition, further support is provided by the Council for Higher Education Consortium, Cape Town Partnership, International New Town Institute, Western Cape Government and the National Research Foundation. NINE URBAN BIOTOPES
JULY– SEPTEMBER 2014 Nine Urban Biotopes (9UB) is an international, socially engaged art project delivering artistic research and cultural exchange between South Africa and Europe. While Terry Kurgan resides in Berlin and Ra Hlasane explores London, Anthony Schrag is based within Drama For Life (DFL) - a department of Wits University that enacts Applied Drama, Drama Therapy and Drama Education for and with communities within Johannesburg. Schrag is interested in the intersection of ‘institutions’ and ‘communities’ and for his project examines the intentions of ‘how we work with people‘ in an urban context. As such, he has developed “The School of No” which exists as a parallel programme to DFL which aims to unravel the notion that ‘education is a form of colonization.’ Process-based, he will develop a series of public performances and interventions, culminating in a final event in mid-September. UNTIL 03/10/2014 THE BIOSCOPE INDEPENDENT CINEMA, 286 FOX ST, MABONENG PRECINCT The central focus of the 2014 Film+School Cinema Education Project is 20 Years of Democracy in South Africa. The programme screens films from an innovative, new education project called Why Democracy? produced by Steps International. This series uses documentary films to get learners talking about democracy in various global situations. These thoughtprovoking films tackle big issues and pose challenging questions. The programme will cover a range of themes including campaigning, developing nations, women and human rights. Through the programme, young learners will come to a broader understanding of the causes and effects of democracy. The seminar will investigate the topic further by looking at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution and the South African White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage of 1996. In October, AFAI will present public debates at the Goethe-Institut on the evenings of 2 and 29 October, and seminars on 3 and 30 October. Kehrwert – Reciprocal Value
17/10/2014 – 04/01/2015 New Masters Gallery at the State Art Collections Dresden The relationship between Africa and Europe is significantly influenced by the West’s representation of Africa which also affects contemporary African politics, society and art. When German or European curators develop exhibitions of contemporary African art and culture, they frequently approach the subject matter from an ethnographic perspective. The exhibition project Kehrwert / Reciprocal Value by the State Art Collections Dresden with the Goethe-Institut reverses this perspective: instead of curators from Germany presenting works by artists from African countries, Ethiopian anthropologist, curator, and writer Meskerem Assegued develops interventions and the exhibition Curvature of Events with works from the collections of the Old Masters Gallery and the New Masters Gallery in Dresden. The exhibition will include a colloquium on the non-European view, an accompanying cultural programme and film series. The project is funded by TURN – Fund for Artistic Cooperation between Germany and African Countries, which aims to encourage a wide range of German institutions to shift their focus on the artistic production and cultural debates in African countries.
