GROUP EXHIBITION

FANTASTIC

OPENING 01/09/2016 18H30, RUNS UNTIL 11/11/2016 GOETHE-INSTITUT, 119 JAN SMUTS AVENUE, PARKWOOD The Goethe-Institut presents Fantastic, an exhibition that seeks to re-ignite critical thought about the fantastic in contemporary art and visual culture. Drawing inspiration from writers such as Ben Okri, this exhibition brings together video art and photographs that engage with the fantastic. Fantastic includes international artists such as Jelili Atiku (Nigeria), Dineo Bopape (South Africa), Kudzanai Chiurai (Zimbabwe), Andrew Esiebo (Nigeria), Milumbe Haimbe (Zambia), Aida Muluneh (Ethiopia), Terence Nance (USA), Tracey Rose (South Africa), Zina Saro-Wiwa (Nigeria) and Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum (Botswana). The exercise of power is related to the control of visibility/ invisibility, deception and silencing which begins, often, with the manipulation of images and of the imaginary. Works exploring the fantastic in photography and video art have been selected precisely because of the complex relations these technologies have in the construction of fantasies about ‘Africa’. This exhibition celebrates popular technologies such as video-film that have created novel ways of seeing and reading the real/ imaginary dialectic. The works show how the ‘real world’ and the ‘spiritual world’ collide but at the same time they remind us of the ideological machinations that construct these worlds. This exhibition, curated by Nomusa Makhubu and Nkule Mabaso, invites us to see the fantastic as a tool for engaging with distortions of our histories and as a conceptual framework for our debates about biopower and biopolitics.

EXHIBITION

DI DIKADIKA TSA DINALEDI BY LERATO SHADI

OPENING 04/09/2016, RUNS UNTIL 02/10/2016 GOETHEONMAIN, 245 MAIN STREET, MABONENG

Lerato Shadi © Erik Dettwiler

Lerato Shadi explores assumptions about the black female body and how performance video and installation create a space to make the body both visible and invisible. Using time, repetitive actions as well as stillness, she questions. `How does one create oneself?’ “Shadi’s body of work often investigates the ways in which one might negotiate a space for themselves in inhospitable locations; her work traces the edges of conflict on our bodies and psyches, following our attempts to feel our way beyond erasure, restricted as we are by exclusion, and the memory-house of our own memory of trauma. For artists who live on the coalface of historical erasure, their artistic practice becomes an obligation: to write, to record, archive what happens when one’s history and the record of one’s people’s existence is being erased.” Neelika Jayawardane.

ART FAIR

JOBURG ART FAIR

09/09/2016 – 11/09/2016 SANDTON CONVENTION CENTRE, 161 MAUDE ST, SANDTON COVER CHARGE: SEE WWW.JOBURGARTFAIR.CO.ZA The Goethe-Institut has been involved with Joburg Art Fair since its inception in 2008, furthering critical discourse and bringing international voices and projects to the Fair. In line with this year’s focus on East Africa, the Goethe-Institut is partnering with The Nest Collective from Nairobi, who will present film and book projects. Black Fantasia is a multidisciplinary project that brings together film, photography and installations by The Nest Collective. According to The Nest, “Black Fantasia collects several future, past and imaginary narratives about blackness: a blackness that carries the weight of colonial and postcolonial tyrannies, a blackness that celebrates, worships, dreams and questions — far beyond the limits of struggle and oppression. They Sent You is an anthology of short photo-comic vignettes set in an imaginary future Nairobi. A new feature at this year’s fair is the collaboration with TEDxJohannesburg with talks focused for the first time on the contemporary visual arts of Africa. Jim Chuchu, Creative Director of The Nest Collective will be one of the speakers.

Two publications will also be launched at Joburg Art Fair: The Nest Collective’s fashion book Not African Enough explores emerging fashion aesthetics in Nairobi, while the Goethe-Institut’s African Futures publication originated from the African Futures festivals, realised in Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi in 2015 and Berlin in 2016.

Christine and Conrad have a modern family: he is a stay-at-home dad while she brings home the bacon. The family faces a huge challenge when Conrad goes back to work as a theatre director: the au pair is completely out of her depth and their daughters Käthe and Emma are totally against the new state of affairs. Conrad’s actors treat him differently after he becomes a stay-at-home dad and Christine pushes the boundaries of his new dual role. It is only when Conrad is in over his head that it becomes clear that something has got to give. © ARD English subtitles. Refreshments will be provided. Niko lives for the moment as he drifts through the streets of Berlin, curiously observing everyone around him and oblivious to his growing status as an outsider. OPPORTUNITIES

GPS OPEN CALL

Goethe-Institut Project Space (GPS) is a multi-disciplinary roving project space that follows on GoetheOnMain, which has been based at Arts On Main in Johannesburg from May 2009 and is set to conclude in November 2016. The new GPS programme will support work realized all over South Africa and encourages production outside of the large metropoles; enabling actors, artists, performers, curators, choreographers, writers, dancers, composers, directors, musicians and film-makers;

to select the space and infrastructure they wish to work with. GPS is envisioned as a non-commercial, artist-centered, roving free platform, designed to support not only the artists and their projects, but also the many structures, platforms and festivals that currently exist and need partnerships of this nature in order to continue their work. The deadline for proposals is on 15 October 2016, with GPS project grants awarded for work realized from April to December 2017. Please see our website for application documents and more information.
