INCUBATOR TRAINING MODULE: EARLY YEARS THEATRE
14/03/2016 - 07/05/2016 PERFORMANCES 30/04/2016 AND 03/05/2016 - 06/05/2016 UNIT 1, THE OLD MATCH FACTORY, CORNER St MICHAELS AND LOWER MAIN ROADS, OBVERSATORY, CAPE TOWN Magnet Theatre, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, offered an intensive training module in the creation of theatre works for very young audiences (3 - 6 years-old) to eight young South Africans and eight guests from four other African countries (Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya and Zimbabwe). The training took place from 14/03 – 29/04/2016 at the Magnet Theatre in Cape Town and was presented by Jennie Reznek and her team at the Magnet Theatre, assisted by Barbara Kölling and Anna-Sophia Zimniak from Theater Helios. The module culminated in the creation of new performances, which will be performed to children from Cape Town and surrounding areas in the first week of May. The Goethe-Institut hopes to continue supporting theatre for very young audiences and is planning to support further performances of the works created during the training module at Magnet Theatre. EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL 2016
06/05/2016 – 15/05/2016 CINEMA NOUVEAU JHB, CT, PTA, DBN From 6 - 15 May, 2016 the European Film Festival 2016 will bring the best of European cinema to Cinema Nouveau screens in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. The festival programme features 11 multi-awarded
feature-length films from across the continent, which have been the toast of the international film festival circuit. Festival Director Katarina Hedrén says: “We wish to contribute to the ongoing story of Europe. This story is one of a diverse continent in an interconnected world, which seems to be spinning faster and not always in the right direction.” The German contribution to the festival is Labyrinth of Lies, a 2014 drama directed by Giulio Ricciarelli. Set in 1958 Frankfurt, Germany, it traces the story of a public prosecutor fighting against the impunity of former Nazis. The European Film Festival is coordinated by the Goethe-Institut South Africa, hosted by Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau, and organised in partnership with the European Union and 11 other European cultural agencies or embassies in South Africa. The Lives of Others is a 2006 German drama which marks the feature film debut of filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It is about the monitoring of Berlin residents by agents of the Stasi- the East German secret police. 02/06/2016 – 12/06/2016 VENUE TBA The 18th Encounters South African International Documentary Festival will screen from 02 – 12 June, 2016 in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. In partnership with the Goethe-Institut in South Africa, the Festival will host the African premiere of German filmmaker Werner Herzog’s latest film Lo & Behold: Reveries of the Connected World in which Herzog explores the internet, offering “a playful yet chilling examination of our rapidly interconnection online lives” in typical “Herzogian” fashion.

With the Union of South Africa losing 80% of its men after several months of warfare, the battle at Delville Wood was one of the bloodiest of the First World War. Initiated by Vienna-based artist Michikazu Matsune, this project comprises of his solo performance Dance, if you want to enter my country! and the group exhibition and pperformance programme GLOBAL CITIZEN. Dance, if you want to enter my country! is a live-performance that focuses on the story of an African-American professional dancer, Abdur Rahim Jackson, who was forced to dance by passport control officers at an international airport in 2008. Utilizing dance, objects and video projection, Matsune tells this bizarre yet true story through a very personal approach. The group exhibition and performance programme GLOBAL CITIZEN, featuring works of participating artists from South Africa and abroad, explores the motif of artists acquiring identity through their artistic praxis. This curatorial project examines the possibilities of art as a tool to reveal our true identity as citizens of a global world.

Bousdoukos based Soul Kitchen on his own experiences as the owner of a Greek tavern named Taverna where Ak覺n was a regular customer. AFRICAN FUTURES
OPENING 03/06/2016 19H00, RUNS UNTIL 07/08/2016 SAVVY CONTEMPORARY, C/O SILENT GREEN, PLANTAGENSTRASSE 31, BERLIN-WEDDING “If you want to have any idea of the world that is coming, the world ahead of us, look at Africa!” says Afropolitan author and critic Achille Mbembe. What might various African futures look like? How do artists and scholars imagine this future? What forms and narratives of science fictions have African artists developed? Who generates knowledge about Africa? And what are the different languages we use to speak about Africa’s political, technological and cultural tomorrow? These were some of the questions addressed by the African Futures festival initiated by the Goethe-Institut. Three concurrent, interdisciplinary festivals taking place in Johannesburg/South Africa, Lagos/Nigeria and Nairobi/Kenya from 28 October to 31 October 2015 explored the futurefollowing potential narratives and artistic expression in literature, fine arts, performance, music, film, and digital formats. In a second stage in 2016, the most interesting outcomes of artistic positions and discourse elements will be part of an interdisciplinary festival at SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin.

THE INCANTATION OF THE DISQUIETING MUSE: On Divinity, Parallel- and Supra-Realities or the EXORCISM of “Witchery”
OPENING 03/06/2016 19H00, RUNS UNTIL 07/08/2016 SAVVY CONTEMPORARY, BERLIN THE INCANTATION OF THE DISQUIETING MUSE. On Divinity, Paralleland Supra-Realities or the Exorcism of ‘Witchery’ deliberates around concepts of the supranatural beyond Western misconceptions– through an exhibition, performances, lectures, and discussions. The project looks at how “witchery” phenomena and practices manifest themselves within cultural, economic, political, religious and scientific spaces in Africa and beyond. This project will not concern itself with nomenclatures nor with evaluations on whether “witchery” is good or bad, but aims at showing it in its complexity. It proposes looking at “witchery”, its idioms, proverbs, metaphors, symbols and chants as epistemological infrastructures on which parallel realities are built, and on which futures too can be built. The exhibition is curated by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung. • Public walkabouts will take place on 04/06/2015 and 05/06/2015 at 16H00 at SAVVY Contemporary. • A discursive and performance programme will take place from 09/06 –12/06/2015. AFRICAN FUTURES
03/06/2016 SAVVY CONTEMPORARY, BERLIN The publication African Futures, edited by Lien Heidenreich-Seleme and Sean O’Toole, brings together expository essays, short stories, excerpts from graphic novels, photo essays and verbatim quotes from writers, artists and thinkers- many of whom spoke at the African Futures festivals. The vast range is reflective of the spirit of the various festivals, which took place simultaneously in Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi. The book continues the conversation of the festivals by elaborating on the questions that informed the programming. Where do we begin when we speak about African Futures? How will technology influence the future in Africa? And where do we go from here? The publication African Futures aims to map the breadth of current artistic practices and thinking engaged with African futurity by gathering the creative speculations of leading African and diasporic artists, writers and thinkers.

During the opening, South African musician/DJ/filmmaker Spoek Mathambo, who has been dedicated to sharing his vision of Afrofuturism with the world, will perform a live DJ Set. Spoek Mathambo has performed his psychedelic blend of township tech, electronica, hip-hop, punk and soul for audiences on five continents, as a “proudly African, always progressive”. African Futures is a project of the Goethe-Institut South Africa, funded by the Goethe-Institut and the TURN Fund of the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

ARTUCATION
ONGOING Artucation is an interdisciplinary arts education programme run by Keep the Dream Arts and supported by the Goethe-Institut, Johannesburg. The programme takes place every Wednesday at Metropolitan College, New Model Private College and Mahlasedi High School. Grade 10 students from these schools are guided in using multidisciplinary spaces as a starting point to initiate dialogues on learners’ social, political and personal environments. In this way, multidisciplinary spaces are used to discuss art as well as unpack and translate themes in the students’ interpretation. These discussions continue beyond these multidisciplinary spaces into the classroom.
This term’s activities include: Film Education: Facilitator Boitumelo Motau holds a session with learners from New Model Private College at the Bioscope Independent Cinema in the Moboneng precinct. Visual Arts Education: Sibusiso Ngwenya guides learners from Mahlasedi High School around When Tomorrow Comes- an exhibition at the Wits Arts Museum (WAM) and What Does It Mean? an exhibition at the GoetheOnMain in Maboneng precinct. Visual Arts Education: Facilitator Mayowa Ayobami explores the exhibition When Tomorrow Comes at the WAM and Dance If You Want To Enter My Country/Global Citizen with learners from Metropolitan College. WIKI LOVES WOMEN
The Wiki Loves Women project seeks to fill two major subject gaps – women and Africa – on the free encyclopedia Wikipedia. These gaps exist both in content on these two themes, but also in terms of participation on the editorial level. The project’s objective is to fight against existing inequalities between men and women on the African continent. The project aims to release and make widely available cultural and educational content on, or related to women, to the general public. The project works with organisations and public institutions to draw their existing information onto Wikipedia, and via this platform make this content available to millions of people every day. This initiative is aligned to the WikiAfrica movement and is run in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut. It takes place in four sub-Saharan African countries, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria. The Wikipedians in Residence are Raphael Berchie (Ghana), Olushola Olaniyan (Nigeria), Eliane Yao Sigan (Côte d’Ivoire), Georges Edmond Fodouop Toukam (Cameroon) and the facilitators are Florence Devouard (France) and Isla Flood-Haddow (South Africa).

GIESECKE & DEVRIENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LEARNERS OF GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
The Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) scholarship-programme is giving German learners from South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania the opportunity to travel to Germany in June 2016. In its second year, the Goethe-Institut is partnering with G&D to facilitate the application process as well as preparing the scholarship holders for their time in Germany. To apply for the programme, pupils who learn German as a foreign language at secondary school had to write an essay about their local idol. Based on this and the overall application outline, G&D chose 20 scholarship holders. They will experience a three-week long special programme which entails a German language course at the Goethe-Institut in Munich as well as visiting various sites in Munich, Leipzig and Berlin, partly experiencing German life in a host family. Prior to their overseas trip, the pupils will participate in a preparatory training at the Goethe-Institut in their home country. The two-dayprogramme will focus on topics such as what is expected of them being part of the group, how to handle intercultural encounters and some background information about the cities they are travelling to. We aim to provide them with the necessary knowledge to enjoy and experience their first trip to Germany to the fullest.
PHOTOGRAPHY EDUCATION
CENTRES OF LEARNING FOR PHOTOGRAPHY IN AFRICA
Centres of Learning for Photography in Africa (CLPA) – a network of photography training institutions, individuals and initiatives – is entering its second year of year of existence. CLPA has recently added Mali and Senegal to the countries represented in the network, in addition to Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa and Sudan. CLPA aims to promote and strengthen the art and practice of photography in Africa through a focus on curriculum development, skills development and access to other training related resources. Furthermore it engages in discussions concerning conventions and the roles of photography in Africa, historically, today and in the future. To date, CLPA’s public facing activities have included training of trainers, project management training and a curriculum development for experienced trainers. In connection with the 10th edition of the Bamako Encounters, CLPA hosted a public forum addressing the state and future of photography training on the continent, in the Malian capital. CLPA is currently planning a network meeting scheduled for the second half of 2016. Throughout the year, the network members exchange expertise, experiences and news regarding photography-related activities and concerns in their respective regions through a quarterly newsletter and themed Skype-conferences.

MUSIC IN AFRICA
Music In Africa has this year renewed and strengthened its partnerships with two of the leading music festivals in Southern Africa, MTN Bushfire in Swaziland and Azgo in Maputo, Mozambique. Music In Africa will be presented at the Azgo Dialogue that precedes the main Azgo festival on

20-21 May. The following week, ahead of MTN Bushfire on 27-29 May, Music In Africa is planning a special kick-off meeting during the festival’s Arts Round Table to showcase its coverage of Swaziland to local musicians and industry professionals. Music In Africa will also be giving away free tickets to both festivals, another aspect of both partnerships. Music In Africa is also currently wrapping up its coverage of its third phase of African countries, and from July 2016 will identify more countries to cover as part of its fourth phase.

TALENTS DURBAN
The 9th edition of Talents Durban is presented by the Durban International Film Festival in co-operation with the Berlinale Talents programme and takes place from 17-21 June 2016. The programme is aimed at emerging filmmakers, particularly writer/ directors from around Africa and runs under the theme Degrees Of Separation: Connecting People And Story. Film has always had the almost magical ability to connect people with story. Whether that be one as familiar to you as a simple tale of romance or whether it be as far removed as life on other worlds, film blurs the borders of yours and transforms human existence into something that is shared.
Like before, Talents Durban will be again hosting mentorship and hands-on training for 5 emerging film critics. The Talent Press programme is a cooperation with FIPRESCI and the Goethe-Institut, South Africa. This year, Talents Durban opens submissions to 15 writers and directors with fiction, documentary and hybrid projects in development. For the first time, the newly re-conceptualized initiative includes projects of all media formats, such as film, television series, web series and mobile content.
