VIDEO ART

Your Skin Makes Me Cry

4 June - 31 July 2015 GOETHE-INSTITUT, 119 JAN SMUTS AVENUE, PARKWOOD

Sommer, Undine. “At the Gallery Owner’s”, 2012.

The exhibition of single-channel video works Your Skin Makes Me Cry is the result of a competition held at tertiary institutions in Germany. The title phrase, coined from the Radiohead song Creep, speaks about intimacy – the physical and emotional contact, happiness and pain it involves, as well as referring to the adolescent struggle for selfhood and the ongoing quest for personal identity. Your Skin Makes Me Cry further speaks about a social context – the staging of the self and the shattering of gender stereotypes. The individual works range from highly personal evaluations of the artist’s own role to critical appraisals of material found online; from observations on everyday realities of relationships, meditations on sexuality to conceptually-minded works focused on queer identities and gender.

FILM NIGHT

English subtitles. Drinks will be provided. Please RSVP by 8 June 2015 to bso@johannesburg.goethe.org

XpressionS! A Picture of a Thousand Words

PHOTOGRAPHY

Opening: Thursday 18 June, 18H30 runs until 13 July GOETHEONMAIN, 245 MAIN STREET, MABONENG PRECINCT Xpression! A Picture of a Thousand Words is a photographic exhibition on Hip Hop culture in South Africa. It will bring together rappers, musicians, poets, DJs and graffiti artists in a collaborative effort to rekindle the flame of the underground Hip Hop movement. The exhibition combines photography, Hip Hop music, and graffiti art. The heart and the drive of the exhibition are the photos captured by Dutch photographer Edward van Herk during Splash Jam, a popular Hip Hop event that took place regularly at Ebaleni Carwash in Orlando West, Soweto. It was organized and hosted by well-known underground Hip Hop group Asylum Trybe. The 20 photos to be exhibited at Goethe on Main capture the magical atmosphere and positive vibes at Splash Jam. The works show an audience comprised of people from different cultural backgrounds who share their undying love and passion for underground hip-hop.

MULTIMEDIA DANCE PERFORMANCE

Black Dog

Opening: Thursday 23 July 2015, 18H30 runs until 17 August GOETHEONMAIN, 245 MAIN STREET, MABONENG PRECINCT Black Dog is a solo dance performance, choreographed and performed by Thulani Chauke. The work was created while Chauke was participating in a residency programme at the Centre Nationale de la Danse and at the Klap Maison Pour Danse in France in 2013. In this work, the audience witnesses the performer attempting to engage with a corrupted world through heightened alpha-male behavior. The work depicts symbols of influence over the lives of individuals – the power to destroy; and greed, fear, chaos and mayhem as weapons in this struggle. Dates for further performances will be announced closer to the time.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION ARTS EDUCATION

ARTUCATION Programme

ONGOING GOETHEONMAIN AND METROPOLITAN COLLEGE Artucation is an arts education programme that takes place every Wednesday. It involves a group of grade 10 and 11 learners who use curated spaces as a starting point to initiate dialogues which comment on learners’ social, political and personal environment. These curated spaces allow them to talk about the exhibition, unpacking and translating themes in their own interpretation. Discussions are continued in the classroom. The Artucation programme therefore starts to become an “art class outside of class” and a youth platform for expressive intervention in arts education.

Books will be created at the Goethe-Institut on 27 June, in partnership with the African Storybook Project. The files will be available for anyone to download to arrange print runs and put finished books into the hands of children. Find out more at www.bookdash.org.

Centers of Learning for Photography in Africa – Johannesburg Trainings & Curriculum Meeting

Two training courses and a curriculum development meeting on photography training come to an end on 5 June 2015, as part of the project Centers of Learning for Photography in Africa. Such support mainly consists of designing, organizing and hosting training workshops and meetings in close collaboration with its main partner, the Market Photo Workshop. It also entails facilitating networking and exchange between learning institutions, educators and other practitioners in the field as well as conducting research on educational resources available online and offline, and improving their accessibility. The project collective consists of representatives for photography training structures from across the continent and the African Diaspora, incl. Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, South Africa and Germany.
