Preparing for 1-3 John Reading

1. read 1, 2 & 3 John this week, preferably in one sitting 2. while reading, write down answers to the questions below

Study Questions

1. Structure: Can you sketch the major sections (salutation, introduction, parts of the body, benediction), esp. of 1 John? How do these letters depart from a “typical” epistle? 2. Message: Like 1 & 2 Peter, each letter has its own message, but they go together. Reflect esp. on the first chapter of 1 John; what is this trio of books about? Message: How do 2 & 3 John pick up and repeat or expand 1 John’s message? 3. Passage: Pay particular attention to 1 John 2.28-3.10.

A text will often repeat important points. Look for repeated words, phrases, and ideas in this passage (there are quite a few!). What is 1 John hammering on here? (hint: this passage has both an introduction and a conclusion that also help identify this) Once you have identified the passage’s message above , ponder how this passage fits into the larger message of 1 John. Look especially for “hooks” to the preceding and following passages.

4.Incarnation: How do we and you need to live 1, 2, 3 John?
