Living

Course Introduction Stones Why? •

Turn to Deut. 31

•

Our story: The Pentateuch is ending. Israel is gathered just outside the Promised Land, ready to enter. Moses, the prophet who has been leading God's people out of Egypt, the land of slavery and death, through the waters of the Red Sea toward the Promised Land of

blessing and life, the prophet who has been communicating God's Word to them, is passing off the scene. His death has been predicted and is

only pages away. Moses is giving his final speech to prepare Israel for life without the prophet. How will Israel be led now, without Moses?

What will be given to keep them on the right trajectory of following their Lord so that they may live long in the Land and enjoy blessing there?

Living

Course Introduction Stones Why? • God will provide 3 things for His people as they transition to life after

the prophet leaves their presence to be with the Lord (cf. MIQRA 10.1) •

(By the way, there’s a parallel here)

(1) Deut 31.1-8

! God provides new Leadership

(2)Deut 31.9-13

! God provides written Law

(3) Deut 31.14-29

! God provides new Lyrics

Living

Content: 1 Peter’s Message Stones •

1 Peter focuses its message on new-creation Christian life in the middle of an old-creation hostile world, a new life that is to be understood on the basis of "time" and "text."

"Time" in that 1 Peter proposes that for the believer, life in the present is to be based on the past and propelled by the future.

"Text" in that 1 Peter founds this understanding on Scripture; what is going on in the past, present, and future for God's people conforms to the Word, both written and incarnate.

Another way to put this might be that 1 Peter sits at the nexus of “exile” and “eschatology.”
