Glen Echo Park

A Note From the Partnership Dear Friends, What a year we’ve all been through! We are so glad that we could offer virtual programming throughout much of 2020 and that so many of you were able to join us for these online classes and activities. As we continue to move more programs back to in-person at the Park, we will be vigilant about COVID-19 protocols and keep the safety of the community, as well as our artists and staff, a top priority. We hope you will enjoy both in-person and virtual activities throughout the summer. Our celebration of the 100th anniversary of our Dentzel carousel continues over the summer. Beginning May 1 the historic carousel reopens after closing early in 2019 for major repairs and remaining closed due to the pandemic last year. For information about all the activities involved in the Carousel 100th Anniversary celebration, including the Carousel Lecture Series, Carousel Story Time, and Carousel Family Days, see the inside cover of this catalog or visit glenechopark,org/carousel100. And our Online Art Market offers Carousel 100th Anniversary logo merchandise for sale. Of course, summer isn’t summer without our creative and fun camps! This season features the return of onsite programs – with virtual camp options as well. Sign your kids up for another summer of fun! We’ll have camps of all kinds for kids and teens ages 4 through 17. Whether your children love theater or painting, photography or music, there is something to spark their imagination. See Camps-At-A-Glance on page 6. But everything is not just for kids! Drawing & painting courses offered throughout the summer include several weeklong offerings for adults who might want their own version of summer camp. And the Washington Conservatory of Music presents a new music appreciation class with Jeffrey Mumford on great Black classical composers from the 18th century to today. Photoworks Studio has classes to hone your skills and develop your artistic vision, including a wide array of technical and imaginative classes like “Vinyasa Yoga and Photography” with E. Brady Robinson and “Street Photography: Making the Ordinary Extraordinary” with internationally-acclaimed photographer Chris Suspect. And there’s still more, including virtual painting classes from the Yellow Barn Studio. When you register for summer classes and camps you will see that we are using a new registration system. The Proclass system has an integrated registration platform with all the tools we need and the most up-to-date technology. For our students, campers, and other participants in our programs, this means a system that has numerous features, is highly secure, and is easy to use. Please contact our Registration Team if you have questions and/or need assistance at info@glenechopark.org. Our 2021 Summer Concert Series kicks off on July 1 this year, with evenings of diverse music in the Park every Thursday through September 9. Held in the covered Bumper Car Pavilion – with COVID-19 safety measures in place – all performances are free and feature local bands representing a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, Reggae, folk, classical, Latin, and more. And there’s more virtual programming, in addition to classes, including virtual concerts, online activities from our children’s theaters and social dance partners, and more. You can always find out what’s happening on our Stay Connected webpage. As a nonprofit organization, we have struggled financially due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, especially as many of the Park’s programs remain on hold, including social dances and children’s theater performances. We greatly appreciate the financial support of the community. We hope you will join us once again in supporting the Park and the Carousel Turns 100 celebration – you can donate here. You can find everything you need to enjoy the Park’s classes and events in this catalog -- or online at www.glenechopark.org.

Stay well and creative, Katey Boerner, Executive Director

Glen Echo Park

Glen Echo Park Glen Echo Park is one of the finest cultural resources in Montgomery County. It is home to 14 resident artists and organizations, a thriving social dance program, a restored 1921 Dentzel Carousel, numerous art studios and galleries, and hundreds of classes in visual and performing arts, including ceramics, painting, photography, glass, music, dance, and more. These activities, as well as free summer concerts, festivals, and special events, bring thousands of visitors to the Park each year.

current arts program. In 2002, the National Park Service transferred management of the Park’s arts and cultural programs, as well as its historic buildings, to Montgomery County, which in turn created the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, a nonprofit organization, to oversee the Park. From 2003 to 2010, extensive renovations of the Park’s facilities took place under the direction of Montgomery County and the National Park Service with input from the Partnership and resident organizations. These renovations were funded with major federal, state, and county resources as well as private donations. Renovations included the Spanish Ballroom, the Dentzel Carousel, the Puppet Co. Playhouse, the Arcade building, the Yellow Barn, Adventure Theatre, the Candy Corner, the Chautauqua Tower, the Ballroom Back Room, and the Caretaker’s Cottage. The Hall of Mirrors Dance Studio was renovated in 2014.

The site was first developed in the 1890s as a Chautauqua retreat but soon became the premier Washington area amusement park, serving the community until 1968. In 1971, after the amusement park closed, the federal government acquired the land in order to preserve the Potomac Palisades and prevent development along the river. The management of the Park was assigned to the National Park Service, which established the core of the

Paul Swartwood, Resident Artist/Director Paul was first introduced to blown glass in 2000 at Salisbury University, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002. After working as a team leader at Simon Pearce Glass in West Chester, PA, Paul moved back to Maryland and discovered his love for teaching all levels of Glassblowing to whomever may want to learn. Paul has taught and demonstrated in many studios over the last 20 years, but Glen Echo Park will always be his home base.

Dentzel Carousel One of the greater Washington, DC area’s true treasures, the historic Glen Echo Park Dentzel carousel is the Park’s crowning jewel from the amusement park era. Installed at Glen Echo Park in 1921, the canopy and the carved animals were made by the Dentzel Carousel Company of Germantown, Pennsylvania. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a classic example of hand wood carving popular during the early years of the 20th century. The 20-year restoration of the carousel was completed in 2003, and the carousel building was

rehabilitated in 2019-20 by the National Park Service, with additional funding and support from the State of Maryland and Montgomery County. We completed significant repairs to the carousel’s 1926 WurliTzer band organ in 2011. The Partnership is closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and we hope to be able to welcome riders back this year. Please check our website for updates about operating hours, ticketing information, and policies for a safe ride.

National Park Service

Glen Echo Park 301.320.1400 nps.gov/glec

For over a century, Glen Echo Park has welcomed residents of the Greater Washington Area. The parks history of change though, has led to tension as Chautauqua dreamers, amusement park thrill seekers, and National Park Service preservationists sought to adapt to the needs of current visitors. This affected not only the architectural styles of the buildings, but also the landscape-everything from walkways to parking lots to lighting. Edward and Edwin Baltzley, in 1891, hoped to entertain and educate the District’s urban populace in a National Chautauqua while preserving the site’s rugged natural beauty. The amusement park owners thrilled visitors with exciting rides. Finally, the National Park Service (NPS) and the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture have collaborated to provide the public with appealing artist studios and arts spaces while preserving the Park’s diverse history. NPS works closely with the Partnership to preserve the cultural resources at Glen Echo Park. Over the years, this has involved determining whether to preserve, rehabilitate, restore, or reconstruct historic structures. After 120 years, all that remains from the Baltzleys’ Chautauqua of 1891 is a solitary stone tower which is now the restored stone tower, home to the Stone Tower Gallery and artists’ studio. But their idea of a premier green space where visitors could refresh and restore themselves has thrived as a vibrant cultural community to this day.

Carousel Tours

The Civil Rights Story of Glen Echo

Join a park ranger and take a close look at the beautiful Dentzel Carousel which was installed in 1921, fresh from the factory in Pennsylvania. Find out how it was made, how it works, and about the rest of the amusement park attractions that were built around it. Hear about the civil rights protests that marched right into the carousel in 1960. Follow the inspiring story of the community’s efforts after the amusement park closed to raise money to save the carousel for future generations. And, finally, learn how the National Park Service, with donated funds, has restored the carousel to its original glory.

Why was Glen Echo Amusement Park segregated? Who led the Civil Rights protests to desegregate the amusement park? Which amusement park ride was a focal point of the protests? This program will explore the Civil Rights issues at Glen Echo Amusement Park and the surrounding area in the early 1960s. By reservation only.
