Welcome to Glasgow Youth Film Festival 2018. We are the team of Young Programmers for GYFF, and we are really excited to share with you a festival we have been working on all summer. Celebrating our 10th edition, and Scotland’s first ever Year of Young People, we guarantee we have something here for you! Kicking off with a local zombie musical, we have films taking you to New York, Denmark, France and beyond. We are particularly looking forward to our special Battle of the Bands event at the Closing Gala, School of Rock. And if you are interested in making your first film, we have two free workshops. It’s going to be a weekend full of celebrations for all ages and we hope you have the best time! Opening Gala: Anna and the Apocalypse Friday 14 September (20.15) | GFT
High School pupil Anna (Ella Hunt) has big plans to leave her hometown and travel the world. As Christmas approaches, something strange lurks in the air, and it doesn’t take long for the undead to put a halt to her plans. Glasgow’s own John McPhail brings us a zombie musical mash-up full of blood, tinsel and a Christmas like no other. With a soundtrack that will leave you with a spring in your step, and keep you checking over your shoulder, Anna and the Apocalypse is a delightful (if a little gory) story of friendship and survival. Pledge allegiance to the band of Mr. Schneebly at our pop-up screening of Richard Linklater’s classic School of Rock. Dewey Finn (Jack Black) poses as his roommate and secures a gig as a substitute teacher. When he finds out the class are musically talented, Dewey hatches a plan to win $25,000. All tickets £5.50. Director Augustine Frizzell makes a sizzling debut with this raunchy teen comedy featuring breakout stars Maia Mitchell and Camila Morrone. Jessie and Angela, high school dropout BFFs, are taking a week off to chill at the beach. Too bad their house got robbed, rent’s due, they’re about to get fired, and they’re broke. Now they have to avoid eviction, stay out of jail and get to the beach, no matter what.
The second feature from award-winning director Crystal Moselle (The Wolfpack) is a fresh take on adolescent life. Against the protests of her mother, 18-year-old Camille (Rachelle Vinberg) is determined to pursue her love of skateboarding. Camille forms a friendship with an all-female skate crew and embarks upon a life-changing journey exploring the grittier subculture of New York City. To celebrate 2018 as Scotland’s Year of Young People, the GYFF team have selected a series of short films from across the globe, created by young filmmakers. Major feminist author Ursula K. Le Guin paved the way for women and other marginalised writers. Best known for the Earthsea chronicles, her pioneering books examine society through the lens of science fiction and fantasy, as she staked her claim in traditionally male-dominated literary genres. This National Endowment for the Arts and Kickstarter-funded documentary features interviews with world-renowned writers such as Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood and David Mitchell.
