Julieta

Friday 26 August - Thursday 8 September Pedro Almodóvar forgoes the energetic bravura of his last release; I’m So Excited! and returns to his great subject, the emotional terrain and interior lives of women. Based on three short stories by Pulitzerwinning writer Alice Munro, Julieta follows the same character at three different stages of her life. In 2015, Julieta writes a letter to her daughter Antía, explaining the secrets she has kept from her over the last 30 years but doesn’t know where to send it, as they’ve been estranged since Antía left her at the age of 18. See p15 for details of All About Almodóvar, a short season of Almodóvar’s early films. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. The screening on Mon 29 Aug (18.00) will be introduced by film critic Alistair Harkness as part of Contemporary Cinema Course. Director Pedro Almodóvar Cast Adriana Ugarte, Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner, Spain 2016, 1h39m, subtitles, 15

Tickled

Friday 26 – Sunday 28 August Journalist David Farrier stumbles upon a “competitive endurance tickling” video online, wherein young men are paid to be tied up and tickled. Farrier reaches out to request an interview with the production company, but receives an abusive response threatening extreme legal action should he dig any deeper. Spurred on by the resistance, Farrier investigates further and soon uncovers a twisted story of a vast empire built on bullying and criminal activity. A thrilling documentary unravelling a web of lies and deceit from the dark corners of the Internet. Director David Farrier, Dylan Reeve, New Zealand 2016, 1h32m, 15

The Wave Bølgen

Friday 26 – Sunday 28 August Roar Uthaug returns with this epic action thriller. In the small community of Geiranger, geologist Kristian works at an early warning centre keeping an eye out for rockslides. The last catastrophe was in 1905: it’s only a matter of time before the next big one hits. Once the boulders start falling, the close-knit village and the tourists it caters for have just ten minutes to get to higher ground… Set your stopwatch for inevitable destruction as nature fights back with drastically shifting scenery and a terrifying monster tsuanami. Director Roar Uthaug Cast Thomas Bo Larsen, Kristoffer Joner, Fridtjov Såheim, Norway 2015, 1h44m, subtitles, 15

Hell or High Water

Friday 9 - Thursday 15 September Hell or High Water merges a gripping family drama with an action packed Neo-Western. Two brothers, Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner (Ben Foster) face the foreclosure of their family’s farm and decide to team up for a string of adrenaline filled heists. They soon find themselves on the radar of seasoned Texas Ranger, Marcus (Jeff Bridges). As the brothers prepare for a final heist and with the Rangers hot on their tails, a final showdown looms where the values of the Old and New West thrillingly collide. Director David Mackenzie Cast Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges, USA 2016, 1h42m, 15

Bobby Sands: 66 Days

Mon 29 – Wed 31 Aug, Sat 3 Sep (15.50) & Sun 23 Oct (12.45) In the Spring of 1981 the relentless cycle of violence in Northern Ireland took a profound turn inside the infamous Maze Prison. Seeking the right to be treated as political prisoners as opposed to common criminals, Bobby Sands along with nine other IRA prisoners began a hunger strike that attracted the world’s attention. Brendan J Byrne’s stirring documentary combines previously unseen archive footage, with Sands’ personal diaries and illuminating eye-witness testimonials to provide a rare insight into the iconic political figure. Director Brendan J Byrne, UK/Ireland 2016, 1h45m, 15

Things to Come L’avenir

Friday 2 – Thursday 8 September Mia Hansen-Løve’s follow up to the critically acclaimed Eden is a stunning portrait of a woman searching through doubt, insecurity and grief to find herself in an ever-changing world. Isabelle Huppert (White Material, Amour) stars as philosopher Nathalie, who whilst trying to balance an ailing mother with a despondent husband and a tumultuous working life, comes back into contact with her former protégé (Eden’s Roman Kolinka) whom she finds has forged his own path. Anchored by an affecting performance from Huppert, Løve weaves a feminine and intellectual narrative about the bracing yet exciting freedom of old age. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Director Mia Hansen-Løve Cast Isabelle Huppert, André Marcon, Roman Kolinka, France 2016, 1h42m, subtitles, 12A: infrequent strong language, drug misuse

Captain Fantastic

Friday 9 – Sunday 18 September Devoted father Ben (Viggo Mortensen) lives a sustainable existence with his six children in the remote forests of the Pacific Northwest, teaching them literature, music and advanced survival skills. However when Ben receives some life-changing news, the group must venture out across America, and the children come face to face with a world that they have been shielded from. Picking up the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Captain Fantastic is a remarkable exploration of what it means to be a parent whilst maintaining your beliefs. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. The screening on Mon 12 Sep (17.40) will be introduced by film critic Alistair Harkness as part of Contemporary Cinema Course. Director Matt Ross Cast Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay, Samantha Isler, USA 2016, 1h58m, 15

The Clan

Friday 16 – Thursday 22 September The latest film from the director of Carancho and White Elephant is based on a chilling true story from the early 1980s. The magnificent Guillermo Francella stars as Arquímedes Puccio, the dead-eyed patriarch of a seemingly unremarkable middle-class family: a family who dine together and take pride in their eldest son Alejandro (Peter Lanzani), a star rugby player. They’re also a family who kidnap the wealthy, hold them for ransom and kill them in cold blood. Pablo Trapero’s deeply disturbing crime drama has the swagger and intensity of Scorsese as it captures a nation grappling with the legacy of years of dictatorship. Director Pablo Trapero Cast Guillermo Francella, Peter Lanzani, Lili Popovich, Argentina/Spain 2015, 1h48m, subtitles, CTBC

Sour Grapes

Mon 19 (18.00) & Tue 20 Sep (20.45) A humorous and suspenseful documentary about an ingenious con set within the world of fine and rare wine auction markets. An unassuming young man, Rudy Kurniawan, was considered a wine savant with a preternatural memory for taste. He surrounded himself with some of high society’s most fervent wine connoisseurs and in 2006 made 35 million dollars selling fraudulent wine through the top auction houses. A few years later, wine producer Laurent Ponsot discovers suspicious bottles and begins an investigation into how one man was able to bamboozle the world’s wine elite. Director Reuben Atlas, Jerry Rothwell, UK 2016, 1h25m, 15

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Friday 16 – Thursday 22 September Raised on hip-hop and in and out of foster homes, rebellious city kid Ricky (newcomer Julian Dennison) gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. When a tragedy strikes that threatens to ship Ricky to another home he goes on the run with his gruff guardian, Hec (Sam Neill), as the clueless authorities lead a national manhunt. Taika Waititi’s follow up to What We Do In The Shadows (screening Fri 9 Sep (23.30), see p18), is a funny and rousing adventure movie, with brilliant comedic chemistry between Dennison and Neill. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Director Taika Waititi Cast Sam Neill, Julian Dennison, Rima Te Wiata, New Zealand 2016, 1h41m, 12A: moderate bad language, innuendo, infrequent bloody moments

The Blue Room

El Sur

La Chambre bleue

Friday 23 – Sunday 25 September Mattieu Amalric directs this erotic French thriller that shares a heavy debt to New Wave crime director Claude Chabrol. Amalric also stars as Julien Gahyde, who is introduced being questioned by the police for unknown reasons, before the film jumps in chronology, building intrigue as we are slowly presented with Julien’s wife and his high-school crush Esther. Wonderfully surreal but subtle, this is noir thriller at its most taut and engaging, and is all the better for refusing to decrypt its central mystery.

Friday 23 – Sunday 25 September Victor Erice followed up his acclaimed debut The Spirit of the Beehive with this 1983 Palme d’Or contender, which has since been heralded by Pedro Almodóvar as one of the most important films in Spanish cinema history. El Sur is the hypnotic and melancholic story of Estrella, a young girl who lives in the north of Spain and is fascinated by the secrets of the south seemingly buried in the traits of her father. Told partly in vivid flashbacks, this is a delicate and beautifully shot film that features an outstanding debut performance from Icíar Bollaín. New Digital Print

Director Mattieu Amalric Cast Mathieu Amalric, Léa Drucker, Stéphanie Cléau, France 2014, 1h16m, 15

Director Víctor Erice Cast Omero Antonutti, Sonsoles Aranguren, Icíar Bollaín, Spain/France 1983, 1h35m, PG

The Girl With All the Gifts

Friday 23 – Thursday 29 September This British action thriller takes its cue from the gritty apocalyptic visions of 28 Days Later and Children of Men, and is written by Mike Carey, adapting his own bestselling novel. In a near-future UK a vicious disease has emaciated the population, turning its victims into flesh-eating zombie-like beings. The girl of the title is Melanie, one of a group of children who have been found to be immune, who goes on the run with a teacher, a soldier and a scientist after their safety is compromised. Newcomer Sennia Nanua heads up a brilliant cast including Paddy Considine, Glenn Close and Gemma Arterton. The screening on Mon 26 Sep (18.00) will be introduced by film critic Alistair Harkness as part of Contemporary Cinema Course. Director Colm McCarthy Cast Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close, UK/USA 2016, 1h51m, 15

The Lovers and the Despot

Under the Shadow

Mon 26, Tue 27 & Thu 29 September In the mid-1970s, Kim Jong-il decided that North Korea’s film industry should make films that connected with his people emotionally. As such, he turned his attention to South Korea’s most celebrated actor/director couple – Choi Eun-hee and Shin Sang-ok – kidnapping them in order to have them create films for his regime. Unbeknownst to him, the couple had since split and Shin’s booming film studio had fallen into financial ruin. What follows is a baffling true story of romance, politics and filmmaking, with interviews and smuggled audio recordings of Kim Jong-il peppering the archive footage to uncover a tale so strange it has to be true. Director Ross Adam & Robert Cannan, UK 2016, 1h38m, some subtitles, PG

Tuesday 27 September (20.25) Tehran, 1988: Shideh lives amid the chaos of the Iran-Iraq war. She is blacklisted from medical school due to her political history and her husband is away at war, leaving her alone to take care for their young daughter, Dorsa. As the war worsens, Dorsa becomes increasingly ill and seemingly disturbed, leading Shideh to believe that her daughter is possessed by malevolent spirits known as Djinns. Babak Anvari’s ambitious first feature blends social critique with a good old-fashioned horror story that is as smart as it is scary. Followed by a Q&A with director Babak Anvari. Director Babak Anvari Cast Narges Rashidi, Avin Manshadi, Bobby Naderi, Iraq/Jordan/Qatar/UK 2016, 1h24m, subtitles, CTBC

He uses his superior intelligence to acquire the wealth needed to save his world from an agonizing death. However, Newton falls prey to the lust, alcohol and decadence that his success brings. Nicholas Roeg’s classic film from the 1970s is not only a visionary and daring indictment of the modern world but also a moving tale on the loneliness of an outsider. Director Nicolas Roeg Cast David Bowie, Rip Torn, Candy Clark, UK 1976, 2h19m, 18

Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence

Sunday 25 September (14.15) A film about clashing cultures, Nagisa Ôshima’s 1983 adaptation of Laurens van der Post’s novel pits two musical icons – Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and legendary pop star David Bowie – as soldiers on opposite sides during World War II. Set in a Japanese prison camp in 1942, where the cavalier attitude of British soldier Jack Celliers (Bowie) contends with the firm discipline of the prison’s commander Yonoi (Sakamoto). Sakamoto also provided the much-celebrated score for the film, which won the 1983 BAFTA for Best Film Music. Director Nagisa Ôshima Cast Tom Conti, David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, UK/Japan 1983, 2h3m, 15

ALL ABOUT ALMODÓVAR

Few filmmakers have garnered as much worldwide acclaim whilst remaining so ardently idiosyncratic as Pedro Almodóvar. The Spanish director has consistently explored melodrama and comedy through themes of desire, passion, family and gender identity. To celebrate the release of his latest film Julieta, we have handpicked a selection of his early films on new digital prints, all featuring the celebrated Spanish actor Carmen Maura. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available.

Dark Habits Entre tinieblas

Sunday 28 August (14.30) Almodóvar’s third feature is a delightfully dark and kitschy melodrama that provides a subversive critique of organised religion in Spanish society. When the boyfriend of nightclub singer Yolanda dies from a drug overdose, she escapes to a nearby convent in order to avoid the police. This is no ordinary convent however, and Yolanda soon finds herself amongst sisters that use heroin, raise tigers and write lurid novels. A hilarious, affecting and surreal provocation demonstrating Almodóvar’s satirical edge, along with his warm-hearted adoration of his female cast. Director Pedro Almodóvar Cast Julieta Serrano, Marisa Paredes, Carmen Maura, Spain 1983, subtitles, 1h54m, 15

What Have I Done to Deserve This? ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?

Tuesday 30 August (20.15) Whilst Gloria spends her days as a cleaning lady, her surly husband Antonio drives taxis and pines for a woman he met in Germany. One of the couple’s children has recently come out as homosexual whilst the other sells heroin, and Antonio’s mother hoards bottled water and cupcakes in order to sell them back to the family. Gloria’s only friend is her neighbour Cristal, a prostitute who lives next door. Described as a homage to Italian neorealism, Almodóvar injects his film with a unique sense of wit and fantasy, weaving a uniquely off-kilter tapestry of everyday chaos. Director Pedro Almodóvar Cast Carmen Maura, Luis Hostalot, Ryo Hiruma, Spain 1984, subtitles, 1h37m, 18

Law of Desire La ley del deseo

Sunday 4 September (17.15) Considered to be Almodóvar’s first gay film, Law of Desire focuses on a complex love triangle between three men involved in the Spanish film industry, and a parallel story of a struggling transsexual actor who finds herself caring for her niece. Following a night of passion, and a brutal act of jealousy, the two stories come together in unpredictable and tragic ways. Almodóvar cannily uses the framework of a Hollywood melodrama to tell his story, whilst deconstructing typical familial stereotypes with gay and transsexual characters. Director Pedro Almodóvar Cast Eusebio Poncela, Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Spain 1987, 1h42m, 18

Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios

Tuesday 6 September (20.25) The film that launched Almodóvar onto a global platform and earned the director multiple awards including BAFTA and Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. Primarily set inside middle-aged voice actor Pepas’ penthouse apartment, the film details her attempts to find out why her lover Iván has recently left her, confronting his son and former wife in order to discover his whereabouts. Meanwhile her friend Candela is afraid that the police might be looking for her after she inadvertently shelters terrorists. A hilarious romp with perfect comic timing, that showcases Almodóvar at his most visually dazzling. Director Pedro Almodóvar Cast Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Julieta Serrano, Spain 1988, subtitles, 1h28m, 12

Sebastiane

Sunday 2 October (19.30) Set in an outpost of the Roman Empire in the year 303, Derek Jarman’s first feature is now a piece of history itself, celebrating its 40th anniversary. His most enduringly (and endearingly) erotic work, it queers the Christian myth of St Sebastiane, telling the story of the famous soldier condemned for his beliefs and pacifism and stripped of his military rank - and eventually everything else. Introduced by curator and writer Marc David Jacobs. All tickets £5.50. Screening as part of Scottish Queer International Film Festival 2016. Director Derek Jarman, Paul Humfress Cast Leonardo Treviglio, Barney James, Neil Kennedy, UK 1976, subtitles, 1h26m, 18

Women’s Support Project: Capturing the Friedmans

Tuesday 13 September (17.45) The Friedmans are a seemingly typical middleclass family living in Long Island in the 1980s and ‘90s. They make a hobby of recording their daily lives, and continue to do so after the father and one of the three sons are accused of sexually abusing children. As conflicting evidence unfolds, the footage documents the impact on the rest of the family members. Compelling and unsettling, this award-winning film is based on true events and raises as many questions as it answers. Followed by a panel and audience discussion around issues of child sexual abuse. The screening will be subtitled with BSL interpretation for the panel discussion. Director Andrew Jarecki, USA 2003, 1h47m, 15

CROSSING THE LINE

LUX Scotland Presents:

Audre Lorde - The Berlin Years 1984 - 1992

Sunday 4 September (19.15) This programme of experimental films celebrates subversive action. Dagmar Schulz’s featurelength portrait of Audre Lorde shows the African-American poet galvanising the Afro-German movement and anti-racist feminism. The documentary shows an alternate history of 1980s West German and North Atlantic social movements, rearranging the legacy of feminist filmmaker Helke Sander. Also in this programme, Sander’s short film about destitution and direct action unpicks narratives of social change and debates about what a feminist looks like, while in the final short Boudry/Lorenz examine the capacity for resistance in the presence of a ‘visible’ enemy. Curated by Phoebe Amis. Director Various, UK 2016, 2h15m, N/C 15+

CULT CLASSICS

The Man Who Fell to Earth

What We Do in the Shadows

Friday 9 September (23.00) Thomas Jerome Newton (David Bowie) is a humanoid alien that crash lands on earth seeking water for his dying planet.

Friday 9 September (23.30) This hilarious mockumentary from the mind of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) chronicles the misadventures of four vampire roommates. Ranging in age from 183 to 8,000 and in appearance from adorably youthful to decrepit à la Nosferatu, the undead quartet are documented for the first time – revealing how they squabble amongst one another, struggle to keep up with modern trends and antagonise the local werewolves. An endearingly uproarious take on the vampire genre.

Director Nicolas Roeg Cast David Bowie, Rip Torn, Candy Clark, UK 1976, 2h19m, 18

Director Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement Cast Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, New Zealand 2014, 1h25m, 15

Videodrome

Sunday 18 September (20.00) ‘Long live the new flesh!’ As the president of a trashy TV channel, Max Renn (James Woods) is desperate for new programming to attract viewers. However, after his girlfriend (Debbie Harry) auditions for the show and never returns, Max investigates the truth behind “Videodrome” and discovers that the graphic violence may not be as fake as he thought. This screening will be introduced by Sunder Cinema as part of Scalarama. Director David Cronenberg Cast James Woods, Debbie Harry, Sonja Smits, Canada 1983, 1h27m, 18

A Good American

Friday 16 September (17.40) Before Edward Snowden, there was William Binney: the captivating journey of a former highranking National Security Agency analyst turned whistleblower. In the late 1990s, Binney helped devise ThinThread: a cheap and effective meta-data analysis programme with built-in privacy protections, which the NSA shut down weeks before 9/11. Convinced this decision cost thousands of lives, Binney has been speaking out against the NSA’s lack of accountability, mass surveillance and abuse of privacy ever since. Shadow World

Wednesday 21 September (17.50) This visually dazzling exploration of the global arms trade exists at the crossroads where art, documentary, history and politics intersect. In exposing how the business of war has fostered corruption, dictated economic and foreign policies and undermined our democratic institutions, Shadow World lays bare a shocking nexus of lobbying and illicit deals. This stirring documentary exhorts viewers to demand a greater transparency. Join us after the film for a conversation with the film’s co-writer Andrew Feinstein and Mark Bitel from Campaign Against the Arms Trade. Director Johan Grimonprez USA / Belgium 2016, 1h33m, some subtitles, N/C 15+

The Olive Tree

Saturday 24 September (15.30) This beautifully tender comedy drama/road movie follows a young, spirited Spanish woman’s madcap trip across Europe as she attempts to return an ancient olive tree to her family farm, where her grandfather, devastated by the sale of this two-thousand-year-old tree, has lost his appetite for life. Her quixotic quest embodies a desire common to many: to undo the damage inflicted by Spain’s boom-and-bust economy on the country’s landscape and its communities. Join us after the film for a conversation with either director Icíar Bollaín or screenwriter Paul Laverty. SOUND & VISION

Sid and Nancy

Sunday 28 August (16.45) A fascinating portrait of love and addiction, Alex Cox’s Sid and Nancy tells the true story that led to the arrest of former Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, while his paramour Nancy Spungen lay dead in their Chelsea Hotel room. Starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb as the doomed couple, this is a visceral, energetic and tragic look at ‘punk rock’s Romeo and Juliet’ that has become both a cautionary tale and a cinematic cult classic. New Digital Print Screening will be introduced by actor David Hayman. Director Alex Cox Cast Gary Oldman, Chloe Webb, David Hayman, UK 1986, 1h52m, 18

Not much was known about Asperger syndrome at the time, and when the press labelled him a freak, Numan became depressed, anxious and out of touch. However, when Numan met his biggest fan he not only rediscovered his passion for music, but also found the love of his life. This screening will be followed by a director Q&A. ADAPTING MISS HIGHSMITH

The Talented Mr Ripley

Sunday 28 August (19.15) After the Oscar-laden success of his Michael Ondaatje adaptation The English Patient, Anglo-Italian filmmaker Anthony Minghella tackled a very different literary source – the book that first introduced the character of Tom Ripley (‘I loved the tone of the novel’, he said, ‘airless, alienated, uncomfortable, claustrophobic, lonely and also quite harsh’). Casting Matt Damon as the protagonist opposite Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, Minghella sought to be more faithful to the original text than Clément’s Plein Soleil, a film he nonetheless keenly admired.
