The Fencer (Miekkailija)

Friday 30 September – Thursday 6 October Finland’s Golden Globe nominee The Fencer transforms a true story into a heart-in-the-throat crowdpleaser. There are echoes of Dead Poets Society and Brassed Off in a film that unfolds in 1950s Estonia. Under Soviet occupation, the country is a place where everyone fears a knock on the door. Endel Nelis flees Leningrad for a quiet life in the Estonian backwater of Haapsalu as a teacher. His decision to start a fencing club ruffles official feathers but inspires the pupils. But if Endel is to truly lead the pupils, he must risk revealing his mysterious past. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Director Klaus Härö Cast Märt Avandi, Ursula Ratasepp, Hendrik Toompere Sr., Finland 2015, 1h38m, subtitles, PG

Under the Shadow

The Girl With All the Gifts

Screening until Thu 6 Oct This British action thriller takes its cue from the gritty apocalyptic visions of 28 Days Later and Children of Men, and is written by Mike Carey, adapting his own bestselling novel. In a near-future UK a vicious disease has emaciated the population, turning its victims into flesheating zombie-like beings. The girl of the title is Melanie, one of a group of children who have been found to be immune, who goes on the run with a teacher, a soldier and a scientist after their safety is compromised. Newcomer Sennia Nanua heads up a brilliant cast. Director Colm McCarthy Cast Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close, UK/USA 2016, 1h51m, 15

Friday 30 September – Thursday 6 October Tehran, 1988: Shideh lives amid the chaos of the Iran-Iraq war. She is blacklisted from medical school due to her political history and her husband is away at war, leaving her alone to take care for their young daughter, Dorsa. As the war worsens, Dorsa becomes increasingly ill and seemingly disturbed, leading Shideh to believe that her daughter is possessed by malevolent spirits known as Djinns. Babak Anvari’s ambitious first feature blends social critique with a good old-fashioned horror story that is as smart as it is scary. The preview screening on Tue 27 Sep (20.25) will be followed by a Q&A with director Babak Anvari and actor Narges Rashidi. Director Babak Anvari Cast Narges Rashidi, Avin Manshadi, Bobby Naderi, Iraq/Jordan/Qatar/UK 2016, 1h24m, subtitles, CTBC

My Scientology Movie

Friday 7 - Sunday 16 October Louis Theroux’s first theatrical documentary sees him delve into the secretive world of Scientology. With a lifetime of experience dealing with eccentric and unexpected human behaviour, the unassuming Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church of Scientology is turned down. Inspired by the Church’s alleged techniques and aided by whistleblowers, Theroux uses actors to recreate incidents people claim to have experienced as members in order to better understand the way it operates. Suffused with humour and unique moments, My Scientology Movie is as outlandish as it is revealing. The screening on Fri 14 Oct (19.15) will be followed by a recorded Q&A with Louis Theroux. Director John Dower, UK/USA 2015, 1h35m, 15

Light Years

Saturday 1 October (14.15) Rose, the youngest of three siblings, longs to see her mum who lives in a care home. Left alone one hot summer day, Rose sets out on her own into England’s forgotten edgelands to find her. This odyssey provokes the rest of her fractured family to come together to find young Rose, reconnecting with each other in the process. The debut feature from BAFTA award-winning filmmaker Esther May Campbell and the acting debut of acclaimed singer/songwriter Beth Orton, Light Years is a poetic and startling story of loss, hope and the deepest of human connections. Director Esther May Campbell Cast Sophie Burton, Beth Orton, James Stuckey, UK 2015, 1h29m, 12A contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex references, brief natural nudity

Norfolk + Q&A

Tuesday 4 October (18.05) An assassin and his boy live a reclusive life in the middle of nowhere. However, when the father’s final target includes the young love of his son, their worlds collide and the family must face the troubling questions of right from wrong, good from bad, family from justice. A haunting and atmospheric film, Norfolk veers from pastoral beauty to utter desolation as the family unit find their relationship put to the ultimate test. This screening is followed by a Q&A with director Martin Radich & producer Finlay Pretsell. Director Martin Radich Cast Danish Menochet, Barry Keoghan, Goda Letkauskaite, UK 2015, 1h27m, N/C 15+

Little Men

Friday 7 - Thursday 13 October After his grandfather passes away, 13-year-old Jake and his family move into his apartment in Brooklyn. Once there, the alienated Jake makes friends with Tony, whose mother runs a shop that also belonged to his grandfather. When the family find out that the shop is worth significantly more than Tony’s mother is paying, a rift develops between the children’s parents that threatens to force the children apart. With understated confidence, director Ira Sachs (Love Is Strange) presents a naturalistic and moving coming of age tale with a remarkable debut performance from Theo Taplitz. Director Ira Sachs Cast Theo Taplitz, Jennifer Ehle, Greg Kinnear, USA 2016, 1h25m, PG

De Palma

Blow Out

Friday 7 – Sunday 9 October Iconic filmmaker Brian De Palma’s work and life are explored in this lively and unexpectedly moving documentary. Having started his career in the 60s, De Palma has been behind such acclaimed and diverse films as Carrie, Blow Out, Scarface and The Untouchables. Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow engage in a personal and candid discussion with De Palma, touching on his remarkable experiences from his days as the bad boy of New Hollywood to his more recent years as a veteran of the industry. De Palma is a funny and incisive portrait of a truly one-of-a-kind artist.

Sat 8 (18.00) & Sun 9 October (19.20) Brian De Palma blends suspense and political paranoia in this masterful thriller with an amazing climax taking place amongst Philadelphia’s Liberty Day celebrations. While recording sound effects for a slasher flick one night, Jack Terry (John Travolta) witnesses a car careering off a bridge into a river. He is able to save Sally (Nancy Allen) but not the other passenger, a governor intending to run for president. As Jack listens to his recording of the crash, he hears something unexpected and as his curiosity gets the better of him, he begins to unravel the pieces of a nefarious conspiracy.

Directors Noah Baumbach, Jake Paltrow, USA 2015, 1h47m, CTBC

Director Brian De Palma Cast John Travolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow, USA 1981, 1h47m, 18

Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World

With Satellite Q&A: Thu 13 Oct (18.00) | Screening from Friday 28 October Oscar-nominated filmmaker Werner Herzog chronicles the virtual world in this fascinating documentary. From the origins to the outermost reaches, Herzog explores the digital landscape with the same curiosity and imagination with which he viewed earthly destinations as disparate as the Amazon, the Sahara, the South Pole and the Australian outback. Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed the way in which virtually everything in the real world works - from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships. There will be a satellite Q&A with Werner Herzog hosted by Richard Ayoade after the Thu 13 Oct (18.00) screening. Director Werner Herzog, USA 2016, 1h38m, CTBC

Tharlo

Saturday 8 – Sunday 10 October When Tharlo is informed by the local police that he must get an ID card, the Tibetan shepherd is bewildered – answering ‘I know who I am, isn’t that enough?’. The journey into the local town to get his card becomes one of realisation for Tharlo, as his austere and isolated existence is challenged by a modern world he never knew existed. Tibetan director Pema Tseden explores issues of identity, culture and modernity (along with the gritty details of herding sheep) in this beautifully shot slow-burning fable. Director Pema Tseden Cast Shide Nyima, Shik Tso Yang, China 2015, 2h3m, subtitles, PG

The First Monday in May

Friday 14 – Thursday 20 October Andrew Rossi’s insightful documentary follows the creation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most attended fashion exhibition in history, the 2015 show China: Through The Looking Glass. With unprecedented access, Rossi captures the collision of high fashion and celebrity, as Vogue editor Anna Wintour orchestrates the glitzy fundraiser. Featuring renowned artists including filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, fashion designer John Gallino and pop star Rihanna, The First Monday in May dives into the debate about whether fashion should be viewed as art. Director Andrew Rossi, USA 2016, 1h30m, some subtitles, 12A: infrequent strong language

As he comes up against the absurdities of the British welfare system, he befriends a single mother who is facing her own struggles on the breadline. British master Ken Loach won his second Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival for this timely, emphatic and often humorous tale of the profound injustices of life in contemporary Britain. 35mm: Quay Brothers meet Christopher Nolan

Friday 21 – Sunday 23 October The Quay Brothers have been making their unique blend of puppetry and stop-motion animation for over 30 years, spawning an enormous cult following and many high profile admirers from Terry Gilliam to Christopher Nolan. A passion for detail, a breath-taking command of colour and texture, and an uncanny use of focus and camera movement make their films unique and instantly recognizable. This collection contains three new 35mm prints of their work, alongside a brand new short from Christopher Nolan revealing the inner workings of their studio. Screening on 35mm.

Atomic - Living in Dread and Promise

Friday 21 – Monday 24 October Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Hiroshima, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, protest, medical research, Chernobyl, MRI scans, Fukushima. The atomic world has been a paradise lost. Using only archive footage – news reports, cosmic imagery, x-ray photography, astronaut training films – Mark Cousins’ acclaimed film captures the dreams and nightmares of the atomic age. A chilling, mesmeric, hallucinatory visual experience enhanced by a haunting and (at-times) thundering score by Mogwai. Please note that the screenings on Friday 21 (21.15), Saturday 22 (14.00), Sunday 23 (20.15) and Monday 24 (14.00) will be played LOUD at the request of Mark Cousins and Mogwai. The Ana Trilogy I & II

Tuesday 25 October (18.45) To mark the release of Rachel Lang’s debut feature Baden Baden, Glasgow Short Film Festival presents the two shorts that preceded it. Together the three films comprise a distinctive and often hilarious trilogy exploring encroaching adulthood and the struggle between reason and passion. In For You I Will Fight (2010) we first meet Ana as a teenager, gradually accepting the regime of military service. In White Turnips Make It Hard To Sleep (2011) Ana attempts to extricate herself from a long distance relationship with artist Boris. Introduced by GSFF director Matt Lloyd. All tickets £5.50. Purchase a ticket and you can get £5.50 tickets for the Tue 25 Oct (20.45) screening of Baden Baden.

Baden Baden

Tuesday 25 – Thursday 27 October Abandoning a miserable job on a foreign film shoot, 26 year-old Ana (Salomé Richard) spends a hot summer attempting to get her life together. But an ambitious DIY project to replace her grandmother’s bath with a walk-in shower gets derailed by ill-advised affairs with lovers old and new, not to mention her failure to return the hired Porsche she ‘borrowed’ from the film set. Rachel Lang’s feature debut heralds an exciting new voice in French language cinema. With its dry wit and eye for the surreal in the mundane, Baden Baden is a sparkling, joyful gem. Director Rachel Lang Cast Salomé Richard, Claude Gensac, Lazare Gousseau, Belgium/France 2016, 1h36m, subtitles, 15

Train to Busan Busanhaeng

Screening from Friday 28 October Workaholic Seok-wu takes his estranged daughter on the KTX high-speed bullet train to Busan to visit his ex-wife. Just as the train leaves the station a vividly unwell passenger lurches onto the train, and before long the passengers find themselves enclosed with a deadly bio-hazardous horde intent on turning each of them undead before the train reaches its destination. Like all the best takes on the zombie genre, Train to Busan giddily uses its high-concept horror as a platform for satire; in this case a biting critique of South Korean class structure. Director Yeon Sang-ho Cast Yoo Gong, Soo-an Kim, Yu-mi Jeong, South Korea 2016, subtitles, 1h58m, CTBC

Burn Burn Burn

Director Chanya Button’s debut is a whip-smart female-centric take on the buddy road movie, with fantastic performances from rising British talent and a winning tragicomic script. Director Chanya Button Cast Laura Carmichael, Chloe Pirrie, Jack Farthing, UK 2015, 1h46m, CTBC

Mulholland Drive

Crossing the Line:

Sebastiane

Monday 31 October (19.50) Having recently been voted the number one film of the 21st Century in a BBC Culture poll, Mulholland Drive will screen on glorious 35mm in GFT 1. Arguably David Lynch’s crowning cinematic glory, Mulholland Drive is a stunning film that succeeds on multiple levels, being simultaneously a darkly comic Hollywood satire, a deeply disturbing trip into a woman’s troubled mind and a hugely compelling riddle in film form. It’s ambitious, puzzling and deftly cinematic, and it allowed Lynch to showcase a revelatory performance from Naomi Watts as Betty/Diane, the two sides of Mulholland Drive’s split personality. Screening on 35mm.

Sunday 2 October (19.30) Set in an outpost of the Roman Empire in the year 303, Derek Jarman’s first feature is now a piece of history itself, celebrating its 40th anniversary. His most enduringly (and endearingly) erotic work, it queers the Christian myth of St Sebastiane, telling the story of the famous soldier condemned for his beliefs and pacifism and stripped of his military rank - and eventually everything else. Introduced by curator and writer Marc David Jacobs. All tickets £5.50. Screening as part of Scottish Queer International Film Festival 2016.

Director David Lynch Cast Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux, France/USA 2001, 2h27m, 15

Friday 14 October (23.00) This rarely seen 1973 anime is hailed as one of the most innovative and highly imaginative animated films of all time. The unforgiving representation of the French military’s counterinsurgency tactics led to the film being banned in France, and its portrayal of military strategy warranted a screening at the Pentagon in 2003. 50 years on, it is still an essential piece of filmmaking. This screening is being supported by Alliance Française & the Society for Francophone Postcolonial Studies at the University of Stirling. Introduced by Africa in Motion. A documentary that must be seen by any music-lover, it makes us realise that without Cugat, Latin music would be very different. Director Diego Mas Trelles, Spain 2016, 1h27m, subtitles, N/C 15+

Black

Thursday 20 October (20.00) High rates of youth unemployment and an increase in the number of teen gangs in Brussels is the backdrop for Adil El Arbi’s and Bilall Fallah’s contemporary take on a Shakespearean tragedy. The pair begin to imagine a different life for themselves but realise in order to break free they must betray the loyalties on which their gangs are founded. Driven by a pulsating soundtrack and a mesmerising performance from Martha Canga Antonio as Mavela, Black is a visceral and fiercely topical film examining issues faced by young African migrants in Europe and young women in gangs. Followed by a post film panel discussion. Screening as part of Black History Month. Director Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah Cast Sanâa Alaoui, Martha Canga Antonio, Aboubakr Bensaihi, Belgium 2015, 1h35m, subtitles, 18

CULT CLASSICS

Belladonna of Sadness Kanashimi no Beradonna

Friday 14 October (23.00) This rarely seen 1973 anime is hailed as one of the most innovative and highly imaginative animated films of all time. Surreal, dreamy, violent, sexual and visceral, illustrator Juni Fukai’s style is vividly brought to the screen by director Eiichi Yamamoto in this adaptation of French historian Jules Michelet’s novel ‘La Sorcière’. This story of Joan of Arc sees her banished from her village and make a pact with the devil to gain magical abilities, while a folk-rock soundtrack helps define a medieval yet also otherworldly atmosphere. Introduced by Jonathan Clements. Director Eiichi Yamamoto, Japan 1973, 1h26m, subtitles, N/C 18+

Blazing Saddles

Friday 14 October (23.20) The Wild West, 1874. Attorney General Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman) appoints a black sheriff, Bart (Cleavon Little), in Rock Ridge in an attempt to force the local residents to abandon their town, thereby paving the way for a new railroad. With the help of the Waco Kid (the late, great Gene Wilder), Bart sets about foiling Lamarr’s plots against him and the townsfolk. Mel Brooks’ satirical Western is a comedy classic that ridicules Hollywood’s obscuring of racism and prejudice in the genre, and remains as relevant today as it was in 1974. Director Mel Brooks Cast Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Slim Pickens, USA 1974, 1h29m, 12A: contains mouthed strong language, moderate sex references and racist terms

Let the Right One In Låt den Rätte Komma In

Friday 21 October (22.45) Get in the spirit of Halloween with a modern horror classic that’s equally poignant as it is disturbing. Based on John Ajvide Lindqvist’s bestseller, this Swedish chiller finds lonesome twelve-year-old Oskar becoming smitten by a young, female vampire named Eli, in the snow-coated forecourt of their glum housing complex. A fresh and memorable mix of grimy realism and gothic fantasy, Let the Right One In plays its shocks sparingly, which only makes it all the more powerful.

The Exorcist (Director’s Cut)

Friday 28 October (22.50) This Halloween weekend we’re bringing back one of the most iconic horror films of all time. When an actress suspects an evil spirit has possessed her daughter, two priests risk their lives to perform the rites of demonic exorcism. Join us for a rare chance to watch the Director’s Cut of The Exorcist on the big screen and discover if it still has the power to terrify over 40 years after it was first released. Director William Friedkin Cast Max von Sydow, Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, USA 1973, 2h12m, 18

Director Tomas Alfredson Cast Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragnar, Sweden 2008, 1h55m, subtitles, 15

From Dusk Till Dawn

Friday 28 October (23.15) After director Robert Rodriguez burst onto the scene with the no-nonsense El Mariachi and its more polished follow-up Desperado, he shifted gears somewhat for 1996’s From Dusk Till Dawn. Starring George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, an actor pairing that seems even more bizarre now than it did then, this bloody jamboree gleefully pits gangsters, seedy barflies and a vacationing family against a strip-club full of monstrous vampires. Director Robert Rodriguez Cast George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Quentin Tarantino, USA 1996, 1h48m, 18
