Lawrence of Arabia - 70mm

Sunday 19 (12.30) & Wednesday 22 November (18.30) Widely regarded as Lean’s greatest triumph, this intriguingly ambivalent account of T.E. Lawrence’s exploits in the Middle East during World War One is also a landmark in the epic tradition of cinema. As conceived by writers Michael Wilson and Robert Bolt, and played by Peter O’Toole, Lawrence – an outspoken lieutenant promoted to lead the attack on the Turks – is a romantic poet-warrior riven with doubts and contradictions, half-resisting what he sees as his own destiny even as he becomes a reluctant agent of British imperialism. Maurice Jarre’s sweeping score and Lean’s astonishing sense of scale serve to turn modern history into the stuff of memorably heroic myth. Screening on 70mm. This new 70mm print is being transported to the UK for a limited time; so do not miss your chance to see this classic piece of cinema in the most stunning quality. Tickets £11/£9. Director David Lean Cast Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, Omar Sharif, UK 1962, 4h08m (includes 20m interval), PG

Whilst the breathtaking concert footage and backstage insights would be thrilling enough for any fan, it is the burgeoning romance between Glasgow roadie Joe and Estelle, who is along on press duties from the band’s management, which captures the euphoria and romance behind the music. Although trained in the ways of the underworld, Il-young has a change of heart in her teens and rebels against her foster mother, a move that finds her not only banished from the family but also on her former ‘siblings’ hit-lists. The Prince of Nothingwood

Friday 15 - Sunday 24 December Sonia Kronlund’s touching and funny documentary, that screened to acclaim at Cannes 2017, follows Salim Shaheen, the Ed Wood of Afghanistan. A force of nature, Shaheen has managed to make and self-distribute no fewer than 110 films despite the country’s on-going war and conflicts. Keenly aware of the power of performance, he uses charisma and confidence to fuel his productions. Bolstered by warmly flamboyant characters and Kronlund’s thoughtful voiceover, The Prince of Nothingwood is an intriguing, infectious story, a love letter to filmmaking. Director Sonia Kronlund, France/Germany 2017, 1h25m, subtitles, 15

Mountain

Preview: Mon 11 Dec (18.15) Monday 18 - Thursday 21 December A unique cinematic and musical collaboration between the Australian Chamber Orchestra and director Jennifer Peedom, Mountain (narrated by Willem Dafoe), is an exploration of our obsession with mountains. Only three centuries ago, climbing a mountain would have been considered close to lunacy. The idea scarcely existed that wild landscapes might hold any sort of attraction. Peaks were places of peril, not beauty. Why, then, are we now drawn to mountains in our millions? Mountain shows us the spellbinding power of high places. The screening on Mon 11 Dec will be followed by a recorded Q&A with special guests.

Menashe

Wednesday 27 - Saturday 30 December Documentary filmmaker Joshua Z Weinstein makes the transition to narrative features with this remarkable, delicate and critically acclaimed account of a widower trying to maintain custody of his son. Shot covertly in Brooklyn’s Hasidic Jewish community with winning, unself-conscious performances by a largely non-professional cast, this charming film is the first in roughly seventy years to be performed entirely in Yiddish, offering a valuable and authentic insight into this most insular and private of worlds. Adapted from Philip K Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Blade Runner has gripped audiences and inspired passionate and fierce debate. CINEMASTERS: THE COEN BROTHERS

Question – how many filmmakers have, over a three and a half decade career, managed the unenviable task of being both endlessly prolific whilst at the same time producing a near immaculate series of modern classics? The answer is two, and they both have the surname Coen. Often funny, sometimes terrifying, always surprising – Joel and Ethan Coen have amassed one of the most remarkable filmographies in cinema history. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available for this season.

Blood Simple: Director’s Cut

Friday 3 (13.30 & 18.15) & Saturday 4 November (15.45 / 20.35) Joel and Ethan Coen’s thrilling debut feature – a stylish, imaginative and hard-boiled neo noir – marked their arrival as distinctive new cinematic voices on its release three decades ago. M. Emmett Walsh is sleazy Texas private eye Visser, hired by bar owner Marty to kill his unfaithful wife and her lover. Given a plan to work from, he decides to modify it without warning; and matters quickly spiral out of control. Personally approved by the Coens, revisit this trailblazing, landmark piece of cinema on the big screen. New Digital Restoration Directors Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Cast John Getz, Frances McDormand, Dan Hedaya, USA 1984, 1h36m, 15

Raising Arizona

Sat 11 (18.00) & Mon 13 Nov (20.45) Indicative to the career that would follow, the Coen brothers followed their breakthrough thriller Blood Simple with a fantastical comedy starring Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter. When ex-con McDunnough and ex-cop Edwina find out that they are unable to conceive, they decide to kidnap one of the quintuplets of a renowned furniture tycoon. Despite attempts to keep their crime a secret, they soon find themselves on the run and hunted by a Harley-riding mercenary. A clever mix of slapstick, surreal fantasy and homespun family values, Raising Arizona is a Coen film like no other.

Fargo

Sat 18 (15.15) & Mon 20 Nov (18.10) By the mid-nineties, the Coen brothers were well known on the indie cinema scene, but it was this dark thriller that made them household names. When car salesman Jerry Lundegaard gets himself into debt, he hires two thugs to kidnap his own wife, planning to collect the ransom from her wealthy father. The scheme collapses quickly when the thugs shoot an innocent bystander and (a very pregnant) Police Chief Marge Gunderson gets involved, drawing closer to Jerry as his situation further unravels. Directors Ethan Coen, Joel Coen Cast Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, USA 1996, 1h38m, 18

Directors Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Cast Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, Trey Wilson, USA 1987, 1h34m, 12

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

No Country for Old Men – 35mm

Sat 25 (15.00) & Mon 27 Nov (17.50) Transporting the action to 1930s Missisipi, the Coen brothers offer their (very) loose take on Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ with this crime-comedy. When Ulysses Everett McGill and his two companions Delmar and Pete escape the chain gang, they have no idea that their adventure is just beginning as they encounter an endless parade of strange characters on their way to uncover buried loot. Featuring appearances from regular Coen players, and a fantastically catchy soundtrack, O Brother, Where Art Thou? shows the Coens at their most energetic.

Sat 2 (14.45) & Mon 4 Dec (17.50) Arguably the Coen Brother’s darkest and most existential film, their 2007 adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel took home multiple academy awards that year, including Best Motion Picture. When Texas hunter Llewelyn Moss discovers two million dollars alongside the remains of several drug runners, he unwittingly finds himself sought by psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh. A grim and cinematically wondrous modern day Western that features one of the most unsettling villains ever to stalk the silver screen. Screening on 35mm.

Directors Ethan Coen, Joel Coen Cast George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, USA 2000, 1h43m, 12A: moderate violence

Directors Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Cast Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, USA 2007, 2h2m, 15
